he coming of spring inspires a sense of renewal and vision, and often directly impacts the desire for home improvement projects. What better place to start than with the kitchen? “The kitchen is the heart of the home, said Austin Gullic, owner of Premium Cabinets of Tulsa. Austin is in the business of inspiring his customers and working with them to deliver the kitchen of their dreams. Established in 2004, Premium Cabinets is committed to providing the highest quality in semi-custom cabinetry at the most affordable price. They specialize in new, superior class replacement cabinets for kitchen and baths.

“The majority of my time with a customer is focused on discovering their needs and wishes and helping them design a kitchen that fits both their requirements and their budget,” said Austin. “This often requires out-of-the-box thinking to ensure we give our customers exactly what they want.” Part of this process is discussing the “pains” associated with existing cabinets. “We really dig into what bothers our customers about the cabinets they have - things that agitate them,” Austin said. “People remodel for a reason, whether it’s a restoration job or just needing a change.” A major focus at Premium Cabinets is functionality. Placement in a space can be completely altered if needed to make the most of the square footage. "Kitchen remodels are more affordable with us. I’m able to give you the highest quality cabinet with all of the bells and whistles at a competitive price." and electrical can all be moved to completely change the perspective in a new kitchen remodel. To assist in providing the most comprehensive previews for potential cabinetry, Premium utilizes a 3D computer generated design application and a large screen monitor for optimal screening in full color. “With the click of a button, I can show you exactly what your new kitchen will look like,” said Austin. Here, the ideas and inspirations can be worked through in collaboration to explore functionality, style, color and materials. As budget usually dictates the final design, Austin recommends putting the entire wish list into the plans, and then scale back if necessary. “Let’s build the virtual kitchen of your dreams, and try to get you there,” he said. “Kitchen remodels are more affordable with us. I’m able to give you the highest quality cabinet with all of the bells and whistles at a competitive price.” These savings are made possible with the solid relationships Premium Cabinets has with their suppliers and a network of insured and bonded contractors.

In addition to consultation and catalogs for inspiration, the Tulsa office serves as a showroom of samples and ideas. Current, completed projects can be found on display and provide an up close and personal experience with design concepts. “I have over 100 sample doors of different styles and colors, which can be previewed in 3D to help plan your project,” Austin said. “I want you to see the full-size versions of people’s kitchens built to immerse yourself in the experience.” Once all the elements are in place and final measurements are submitted for the remodel project, the job can be completed relatively quickly. Austin can provide a list of trusted contractors for installation, electric and plumbing connections. Premium Cabinets’ approach emphasizes a flexible package of reliable services and resources to ensure the highest level of customer satisfaction. Spring into action now to create the kitchen of your dreams.

At the time the center opened, it was one of only four in the United States. “Varian is the one of the leading producers of radiation delivery machines in the world. Tulsa, and of course, many in Oklahoma City and others around the state, our location in northeast Oklahoma serves as a great convenience to those around the area,” Dr. Styles said. “We have patients who come from Rogers County, but also Grove, Grand Lake and other towns surrounding the county.” Dr. Styles said the clinic’s proximity in Rogers County is a “huge asset” to patients who are receiving daily treatments Monday through Friday, sometimes for as many as eight or nine weeks, saving them the inconvenience of multiple trips to Tulsa or even further. “When we opened, we thought we might be limited in what we could treat, but because we have so many patients who, no matter what, weren’t going to make it to Tulsa, we found we could treat just about any cancer which requires radiation treatment,” she continued. “We treat a lot of lung cancer patients,

We see about five patients an hour, so walking them in and getting them ready for treatment actually takes longer than the treatment itself now.” With the top-of-the-line Halcyon here, I know that our patients are going to be getting the best possible treatment,” she said. Dr. Styles, a Philadelphia transplant who has been a physician for more than 20 years, said that although many statistics surrounding cancer have remained consistent, others have been shifting, such as cases of increased lung cancers and colon cancers in young people, but also, longer life expectancy for those receiving a cancer diagnosis. “We, in the area of radiation oncology, are seeing more and more patients that benefit from radiation treatments at some point during the course of their disease,” she said, “and I personally feel like I’ve seen a huge shift in that. Even patients who are diagnosed with a more advanced disease are living longer. Because we can now deliver treatment more safely and more accurately, we are more aggressive –we see more success and the patients are living longer.” Also working to save lives at the clinic in Claremore is Dr. Diane Heaton, who is the facility’s medical director. “Dr. Heaton has been in the Tulsa area for many years, and she was

We’re in very similar places in our careers, we had a good meshing in terms of that, and she’s the one who spoke to me about the need for physicians here.” When contemplating what advice to give anyone who receives a cancer diagnosis, Dr. Styles said to work closely with the doctor. “People will sometimes get online and read all these horror stories from people who’ve had terrible experiences after getting a diagnosis of cancer – that can be very scary,” she said, “but talk to and work with your doctor. People who have been diagnosed with and beaten cancer? They’re out living their lives, and that’s what we’re here for – to help people who come to us with cancer to beat it and get back to living life.”

Northeastern Oklahoma Cancer Institute is located at 1501 Florence Avenue (#191) in Claremore. Lawn Treatment

THAT EXCEED EXPECTATIONS

o you want a beautiful, healthy lawn you can be proud of, free from weeds, pests and other issues? Achieving this begins with soil that is healthy and balanced. Once you accomplish that, nature will work with you – rather than against you when it comes to maintaining your great looking lawn! Not only is that great news for your yard, but also your wallet! Sooner Lawn’s goal is to provide you with fertilization solutions that meet your needs and exceed your expectations. They say that if all

you have done is spray for weeds, it’s going to begin a vicious cycle. Chemicals enter your soil, killing microbes and (in some cases) sterilizing it. Not only are the chemicals they use for weeds safe, but they also work without causing harm to the soil. Combine this with their superior fertilization products and methods, and you have a winning combination that helps ensure your lawn is healthy and stays that way. If you have been procrastinating using a professional lawn treatment service, Sooner Lawn’s Tim Nguen

said it’s not too late to begin giving your lawn some love. Mid to late spring is the right time to launch an attack on crabgrass, nut grass and broadleaf control; timing is also good for applying highperformance fertilizer too. While you might prefer to treat your own lawn, the Sooner Lawn professionals take it up a notch. Their full-service program provides the right formulations for your particular grass at the right times throughout the year. Now thru Fall, each treatment is staged for optimum results, applying

customer is a commercial golf course, business or residence, we have the right experience to give the best results. We commonly hear our customers say things like ‘this is better than it has ever looked!’….’your work and pricing are very good and we will highly

recommend you. We take pride in our work and are equipped and to handle jobs of all sizes.” Tim added that their prices are below most, if not all, other local lawn care companies. “Exceeding your expectations is what good customer service is all about. We keep our customers happy by offering the best service at a great price with outstanding results.” The company’s optional services include fertilization of flowerbeds, aeration for more effective watering and nourishment, perimeter control, insect control of fleas, ticks, ants, spiders and chinch bugs, mole control, turf disease control and fescue seeding. They are fully licensed and insured. All recommended work is guaranteed, and they are members of the Better Business Bureau.

Mortgage Matters

by Megan Boyd RCB Bank

Building a house is a two-loan process.

F

irst, you need temporary construction financing to cover the building costs. Then, you need permanent financing for your mortgage. Eliminate uncessary stress by obtaining both loans at one location. Here are three reasons why.

No. 1. Cost Savings Financing both loans at one place, like a bank, streamlines your loan process. You provide information to one place, which uses it to prepare both loans. You may save on appraisal costs too. By using the same bank for both loans, you may only have to pay for one appraisal and then a less expensive appraisal certificate to certify the construction is complete. 34 |

VALUES

No. 2. Mortgage Pre-Approval Securing both loans through the same bank may reduce your risk of mortgage delays by allowing you to get pre-approved early for permanent financing. A pre-approval is based on documentation you provide at the time, assuming your situation does not change.

No. 3. Efficiency During construction, your lender works with the builder or contractor to ensure invoices are paid based on the work done and materials provided. Your lender monitors the progress of the project so payments are only made for work completed. By financing both loans through the same bank,

OWASSO & COLLINSVILLE APRIL 2019 WWW.VALUENEWS.COM

the lender can schedule closing on your mortgage to occur quickly once the contractor gives the ok to move in. You can have as much or as little involvement in the construction process as you want. Some customers prefer the builder to work directly with the bank. Others prefer to be hands on. Building a house is a huge project. Find a lender you trust. You need a lender who is flexible and adaptable to your needs, and easy to reach by phone, in person or at the job site, as needed.

We built our house 3 years ago including the cedar deck, as soon as we moved in we stained the deck and it looked great. Unfortunately, it only looked good for about 6 months and we knew we had to do something to protect our investment, we were not too excited about the prospect of having to stain our deck, at least once a year, to maintain it. Thank God for Permaseal, your team came out, cleaned the deck and permanently sealed the deck with the penetrating sealant. Now it looks just like the day we moved in and we do not have to stain it, unless we want

We are so happy to know we have protected our investment for at least 25 years and we have just scheduled your team to come out and permanently seal our drive way as well. We can highly recommend Permaseal to everyone that is looking for a permanent solution, peace of mind. The whole thing was a very pleasurable experience. From the initial visit, where you thoroughly explained the entire process, with no sales pressure. To the polite, punctual and professional crew that came and did the work. Thank you again for helping us preserve our investment.

solutions for wastewater concerns BY TOM FINK

et it not be said that J.T. Bohannon is afraid to get his hands dirty – very, very dirty. As the owner of Wastewater Solutions of Oklahoma, Bohannon maintains and installs septic systems – a dirty job, which he’s more than happy to do, and with which, he’s got nearly 20 years of experience to draw from. Based in Claremore, where Bohannan is a fifth-generation resident, Wastewater Solutions of Oklahoma services customers within a 30mile radius. “For the last 18 years, I’d owned Cross-Bo Construction, and in that business, we did underground utilities, and I learned, just from

people calling and needing septic systems put in, how much of a needed business it was, especially in Claremore,” Bohannon said. “One of the things that led me to start my own septic company was that people could very easily be taken advantage of in this business – I don’t like that, so that led me to get my own (septic

business) going. After being in the construction business for so long and seeing people get gauged on a septic system.” In his own septic businesses for a year and a half, Bohannon specializes in conventional septic system and aerobic system installation, as well as maintenance on aerobic systems. For those unfamiliar, septic systems are underground wastewater treatment structures, typically used in rural areas without centralized sewer systems. They use a combination of nature and technology to treat wastewater from household plumbing produced by bathrooms, kitchen drains and laundry. Unlike traditional septic systems, aerobic systems – which Bohannon has at his own home in rural Rogers County -- produce a highquality secondary effluent (waste or

sewage), which is treated, sterilized, and then used for surface irrigation. Although the job itself can be an especially messy one, Bohannan takes it all in stride. “You know, I’m used to it, being in the construction business for so long, putting underground utilities in,” he said. “We did a lot of sewer work – a lot of live sewer work. I think you just kind of grow accustomed to that sort of thing. It just doesn’t bother me at all. “I’ve always compared what I do to what doctors do,” he continued. “The sight of blood makes me pass out, and I wonder every day how someone can possibly be around blood like that. I’m sure some of them probably feel the same way about me and what I do, what I’m around – ‘How can you do that every day?’, so it’s really just about what you’re used to, what you condition yourself to be around,

making sure, of course, to always take precautions.” While Bohannon said his “biggest thing” is installing new septic systems, he said he can handle repairs to older systems, as well as maintaining them through chlorination treatments or pumping services, whether at new construction or existing residential homes. The typical amount of time on a job is about a day. Bohannon said he tries to stay within “about a 30-mile radius” of Claremore, which would include Catoosa, Owasso, Pryor and portions of Tulsa, sometimes he does make exceptions and travels further. However, for as dirty as the job can be, something in which Bohannon takes pride in is the cleanliness of his work ethic. “Something I think that separates me from other septic companies would be my honesty and integrity,” he said. “I’m going to tell my customers how it is. I won’t beat around the bush, but I’ll be fair about the price. I think that sets us apart.” So, whether your septic system needs maintenance or you’re in the market for a new one, you can count on Wastewater Solutions of Oklahoma to solve your drainage problems.

ardening has never been one of my talents. I get really excited, and over zealous in the spring, with a car full of vibrant plants and pretty bags of seeds that I dream will soon grow in my garden perfectly enough for a Southern Living cover story. But then it gets hot, and I either over water or under water, and the bugs take over like it’s a buffet. By October I have tomato plants full of green leaves with a couple of tiny tomatoes that I watch carefully until the birds decide they’re worth eating before I can harvest them. But this year is going to be different. I decided to consult with a professional who knows Oklahoma weather, and the plants that thrive in it. As a chef, all I want are plants that produce food I will cook, flowers that

are edible, and herbs that will make all my dishes look and taste delicious. Is that too much to ask? I talked with Lindsey Fladie and asked her some questions about starting a “chef’s garden” in Oklahoma. Here is what I learned:

S: What is the most important factor to consider when planting a vegetable and herb garden? L: Soil health, sun requirements of plants, and access to water.

S: What are some Oklahoma native plants that you recommend?

L: Prickly pear is a fun one because cactus and succulents are so popular right now. You can eat the pads of the cactus and harvest the fruit. Passion flower vine is great if

OWASSO & COLLINSVILLE APRIL 2019 WWW.VALUENEWS.COM

you have a trellis. Not only does it produce beautiful flowers, it produces fruit as well.

S: What are some tips for growing tomatoes in Oklahoma?

L: Start with good soil full of nutrients. Also, plant tomatoes deep to establish a good root system.

S: Are there flowers that are good to plant in an edible garden to help with pest control?

L: Borage repels hornworms, and has an edible flower. Marigolds cause pests to become confused because of their strong aroma. Plants that attract beneficial insects include borage, cilantro, dill, fennel and sweet alyssum.

Grilled Steak Skewers with Chimichurri Sauce

Steak and chimichurri is a famous combination in Argentina! Chimichurri is a mixture of herbs, olive oil and aromatics that works perfectly with a grilled steak. This recipe uses steak on skewers to serve as appetizers or over a green salad. Of course, you could also grill the whole steaks to serve as the main course. If there’s any leftover sauce, add some more olive oil and dress a lettuce salad for a blast of great flavor.

S: What are your tips for feeding eding a vegetable and herb garden?

L: Before planting add a granular ular fertilizer to the soil, and after planting fertilize with a liquid every 3-4 weeks. Read the recommended doses on the fertilizer label, so you don’t burn the plants or starve them. Herbs don’t require a lot of feeding but use organic liquids such as Neptunes, fish and seaweed. Fortunately, I don’t have difficulty growing an abundance of herbs. I use them all year in my recipes, and they add a lot of flavor and color to my dishes. 3/4 cup olive oil 1/3 cup sherry wine vinegar 2 tbsp. lemon juice 1 cup chopped Italian parsley 1/2 cup chopped fresh basil leaves 2 tbsp. chopped fresh oregano leaves 3 cloves minced garlic 1/4 tsp. freshly ground black pepper 3/4 tsp. Kosher salt 1/4 tsp. crushed red pepper 2 pounds beef top sirloin or beef filet 12 wooden skewers, soaked in water

In a food processor, combine all ingredients except steak. Pulse to combine. Alternatively, you can blend the ingredients with a mortar and pestle. Do not blend to a puree. Remove half of the sauce and put in a bowl. Reserve remaining sauce. Cut the steak into 1 1/2” strips and season with salt and pepper. Transfer to a large plastic resealable bag and add the reserved sauce to cover the meat. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, and up to 3 hours. Heat grill or skillet over high heat. Remove meat from bag and shake off excess marinade. Thread the steak strips onto the damp skewers (to prevent them from burning), and grill each strip for about 2 minutes on each side, until medium-rare. Serve with reserved sauce.

or more than 20 years, the Easter Production at Victory Church has been an annual tradition in the Tulsa area, drawing thousands to see the Easter story portrayed onstage. Victory annually tells the story of Easter through a multimedia, theatrical production and in recent years, there has been a unique script each Easter. Creative Media Director John Daugherty believes this year’s production, entitled “Proof,” is the church’s best yet. “In this day in age, there’s a lot of CGI and explosions in movies and you don’t

have to have a good story. Entertainment is at the grasp of your hands with your smartphone, but the thing that is lacking is the story. This year’s story, meshed with the entertainment value, is the best we’ve ever done.” The production will feature more than 180 actors, as well as another 50 volunteers working behind the scenes. The process of pulling together the performance began back in December. “We have seen it grow every year,” Daugherty said. “We believe it’s more than just a play. I love calling it an experience.”

This year, Victory will offer the community eight opportunities to see the production, —April 17-19 at 7 p.m., April 20 at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. and Easter Sunday at 9 a.m., 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. “We definitely put effort into the art of it, but at the same time everyone has a pretty good understanding that it’s bigger than these four days and these eight shows,” he said. “People are able to interpret it for wherever they’re at in life or wherever they stand in how they view God,” Daugherty said. “What we have realized is we don’t have events.
