“We are excited to be ballooning in Muskogee again and to bring the Oklahoma State championship to a wonderful city and a fabulous venue,” said Chris Sabia of Kansas City AeroSports, balloon meister, and event manager of the Oklahoma Festival of Ballooning. Festival-goers will experience luminous balloon glows both Friday and Saturday with many of the balloons inflated and lighting the festival grounds with a radiance of brilliant color. Back by popular demand, tether rides will be offered for those who want a few minutes in a floating balloon basket that is securely tied to the ground. Admission for the event is $10 per car. A food truck midway, Kid’s Zone, helicopter rides and an “Up, Up and Away” 5K run Saturday morning are all being offered as part of this year’s festival. Friday night’s concert includes fireworks, a balloon glow, and music by Grammy-award winner John Fullbright. On Saturday, Muskogee’s own, The Swon Brothers will perform to their hometown crowd. Country music newcomer, Olivia Ooms will open for the bands both Friday and Saturday. There will be RV campsites available. Spirits to fly high at

isitors to the Will Rogers Birthplace Ranch in Oologah typically see the kinds of things one would expect to see at a ranch – animals, farm equipment, barns, etc., but this August, the historic ranch will boast a more unusual sight: airplanes, and lots of them. Slated for Saturday, Aug. 10, the Will Rogers/Wiley Post Fly-In will fill the sky over the Will Rogers Birthplace Ranch in northeast Oklahoma with planes of all makes and models, as pilots make their way to Oologah for this annual family event. “For those unfamiliar, this is an annual fly-in at which pilots from throughout the state and some from outside Oklahoma converge on the Birthplace Ranch for a day of aviation appreciation, food and fun,” said Tad Jones, Will Rogers Memorial Museum executive director. Jones said that the event, which has been held for more than 20 years, previously began at 9 a.m., but due to its popularity, both pilots and members of the public would arrive much earlier, prompting the day’s activities to instead begin at 7:30 a.m. “Early arrivals will really be in for a treat as that’s when most of the planes will be arriving,” Jones said, “but there will be activities ongoing throughout the morning and early afternoon.” In addition to the planes – oftentimes, more than 100 – to fly in over Oologah Lake, the day will include food trucks, classic cars, Cherokee weaving and Cherokee storytelling by Robert Lewis, a remote control plane display presented by the American Turf Flyers, inflatables, face painting, and an appearance by a Will Rogers interpreter. “As much as there’s going to be for the family members, the pilots always appreciate it when members of the public approach them to get an upclose and personal look at the planes and to talk to them,” he said. “For comfort’s sake, we would encourage people to bring their lawn chairs
Above: Will Rogers Memorial Museum executive director Tad Jones shows the new design to be used on commemorative t-shirts for the upcoming Will Rogers/Wiley Post Fly-In in Oologah. to sit in and relax as they watch the incoming planes.” In addition to the fly-in, Jones said the day will include a period of remembrance for those whose lives were lost in a small airplane crash. “A few years ago, we added a National Day of Remembrance to coincide with the Fly-In,” Jones said. “As Will Rogers was America’s spokesman for the then-fledgling flying industry, and Wiley Post was himself a flying pioneer, the Day of Remembrance is our way of honoring them and honoring anyone who lost their lives in a small airplane crash.” Events and activities will be ongoing
throughout the day, with the National Day of Remembrance ceremony to be broadcast at 10 a.m. on a Facebook livestream. Among those scheduled to be honored during the National Day of Remembrance are Joel Fream, Bob Hudson, Rick Sandoval, Steven Scott, Adina and Ivan Williams III, Steve Navarre, John Drake, Joe Hartung, David Huffaker, Robert Landry Sr. and four passengers, Randall Lee Harris, Lt. Dale Bryan Shillington, James Carroll Harris, George H. Sanders, Scotty Wilson, Daniel Chester Yeager, John Baxter Carder, Louis Leone, Joseph Provenzano, Richard Shimer, Lonnie Hardin, Bill Watson and Dr. William Kinsinger. Jones said the flyin at the Birthplace Ranch is distinct in that the location – overlooking Oologah Lake – lends itself to a view truly unlike anything else to be experienced in the state. “There’s nothing Above: Spectators line up to watch planes arriving at the Will like being at a Rogers/Wiley Post Fly-In in Oologah.
Above: In honor of Will Rogers and Wiley Post being early pioneers and supporters of the once-young aviation industry, it’s not uncommon for Will Rogers and Wiley Post interpreters to arrive and be in attendance at the fly-in.
historic location, overlooking a beautiful lake, and seeing dozens if not 100 or more planes, fly in from all directions – it’s an experience not like anything else,” he said. “After the planes land, there’s a closeness to the pilots that the public gets to share by walking right up to them, talking to them and sometimes, the pilots will even let people sit in the planes. It’s really a remarkable thing, and it’s just a fun, relaxing event that the whole family can get something from.” Attendance is free, although donations are encouraged, and commemorative t-shirts, hats, and other collectibles will be available for purchase. This event is sponsored by the Cherokee Nation. The Will Rogers/Wiley Post Fly-In is 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Birthplace Ranch in Oologah. organization’s 35th year,” Conner said. “We agreed and our goal was set at $3,500.” However, agreeing to host a fundraiser and planning it are two different things, Conner soon discovered. “I wasn’t sure what to do, so I went to my neighbors and came up with the idea to do a car show AND a fly-in,” she said. “They said ‘Sure,’ so in about four weeks – which wasn’t much -- we put it together. I think we had about 86 vehicles show up, but I’m not sure how many planes came in that year. We didn’t keep track of the airplanes. We had some food vendors, and everyone had a good time. It was tiring – exhausting, even – but we raised more than our initial goal and in total, raised around $5,100.” After her first time to plan and host the event, Conner had no plans to do so again, but as time passed, she softened on the idea of hosting another car show/fly-in. “Time went by, and the more I thought about it, and the more time we had to plan it, the better it sounded, and we hosted not one but two of these events – one here and one in Skiatook, and this time, we raised $10,000 for Make-A-Wish

Wings, Wheels and Wishes itself includes a car show – vintage and unique models – and a flyin, at which, pilots from across the region converge on the Collinsville property for fellowship, camaraderie and a fun afternoon. “We have food trucks, ice cream, a live DJ, raffle items, several silent auction items, and more,” she said, “and this year, we’re going to have a station where children can make paper airplanes or styrofoam gliders and see which one goes the furthest.” Food trucks scheduled for the

However, for all the fun to be had, for Conner, the event is always in honor of her son, Bill. “Anything I can do to help the Make-A-Wish Foundation, I will eagerly do – my family and I will forever be grateful to them,” she said. “Being able to do so in memory of my son brings me some peace.” Wings, Wheels & Wishes FlyIn, Car & Bike Show is scheduled for 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24, at Airman Acres Airport in Collinsville. or centuries, classic analog clocks have been revered and valued, not only for their functionality but for their collectability as well. In the past, clocks were made to last, and possessed intricate inner workings, and often times beautifully and artfully crafted wooden shells. Keeping these timepieces functioning properly over time requires maintenance and care to protect their longevity. The Clock Store and School, is shining a new
light on the face of keeping time. Located in Broken Arrow, on the southeast corner of 81st Street and Aspen Avenue, an innovative and inspirational new business can be found. Clock lovers will find a charming storefront, with an incredible selection of clocks available for purchase, as well as a refined service center for restoration and repair for all clocks. The shop is a gateway to something even more special: an institute of learning in the field
of horology. Horology is the study and measurement of time and includes the art of making clocks and watches. As technology is continually expanding and growing, horologists maintain the timeless tradition that retains a collectible clock’s value in a digital age. The Clock School provides education and training to keep this trade alive. Leslie Dismukes assists in the management and operation of both the school and the shop. Her

n this age of efficiency and ondemand service, most anything can be delivered to our doors with only a few clicks or a phone call. Why should the tire buying experience be any different? Tread Connection is gaining traction as the most innovative and time-saving way to equip a vehicle with new tires or tire repair, providing service in Tulsa and the surrounding area. Owner and operator, Forrest Green, purchased his franchise with Tread Connection based on the excellent customer service that the company provided him, and his extensive training and experience in mechanics as an active guard member in the U.S. Army. Forrest is proud to provide a veteran-owned business offering a “full on-site tire shop,” all encompassed in a mobile unit, providing direct to customer tire installs and wheel balancing, as well as flat repairs. “It’s not just convenient, but more cost-effective,” said Forrest. “I don’t have the overhead of a building, and all that entails, so I can pass those savings on to my customers.” The Tread Connection van is a marvel in its own right, with the latest and greatest technology from around the world inside, ready to quickly and efficiently meet the needs of his customers. Forrest currently is the only Tread Connection provider in the state of Oklahoma. “I’ll always go the extra mile to ensure the best customer service,” said Forrest. “My customers receive more individualized and personal service since I only focus on one customer at a time. It’s unlike anything you’ll find in a local tire shop.” The revolutionary equipment inside the mobile operation includes the Corgi 5000; a tire changing and balancing machine from Italy. It boasts touch-free technology that
protects the rims of the wheel and provides more than double the average on balance points. “It’s the absolute best out there,” said Forrest. “We can efficiently and quickly change all tires, from low profile highperformance to the blown-out tire on the family van.” Tires can be purchased from their website, and most vehicle makes and models can be accommodated. The Tread Connection online store offers purchase options in ranges of good, better and best, with competitive and affordable pricing. Additional services provided include tire

ince its inception, the George Miksch Sutton Aviation Research Center’s mission has been to achieve two things: conservation and education. However, for one evening this August, the center will aspire to one more goal: fermentation. Wild Brew, a oneof-a-kind event, will be held in Tulsa in an evening which combines Tulsa’s best restaurants with firstrate beers made by artisan brewers from Oklahoma and across the U.S. in a fundraiser to benefit the center’s mission to protect indigenous Oklahoma birds and educate the public about the importance of conservation. “The annual fundraiser supports the Sutton Center in Bartlesville,” Said Audra Fogle, Sutton Center director of development. “The center is an internationally-recognized, nonprofit wildlife conservation organization.” Funding from this year’s annual craft beer festival, Wild Brew, will aid the crew at Sutton, currently engaged in recovery efforts for two of the rarest birds in North America -- the 30 |

Through tracking information provided by monitors called the Bald Eagle Survey Team, or BEST, Oklahoma’s confirmed Bald Eagle population has grown to more than a robust 200 nests around the state, many of which can be traced back to their release from the center. “Because of the success with the eagles, we’re better-known nationally and even internationally than we are here in the state,” Fogle said. “We continue to monitor (eagles) to make sure they’re doing well, and we work with developers to help them make better choices. “In our mission statement, we describe ourselves as a cooperative conservation organization,” she continued. “We try to work with as many businesses and organizations as we can because we truly believe we accomplish more if we work together. “Also an important part of what we do is education because, without education, all the conservation in the world doesn’t matter,” she said. “People need to know what’s going on in the world around
them and why, especially with children.” To this end, the center engages volunteers, citizen and professional scientists, conservationists and others, and provides hands-on educational opportunities. “When asked, we speak to children’s groups,” she said. “One of our premier projects is the Sutton Award, which is a statewide art show. It’s a statewide art scholarship program, and we give up to $20,000 to students in art programs in high school. The way that this fits in with our mission is that it helps students to tell the conservation story through art and essay. Not only does this affirm students, but it gets them interested in and excited about conservation matters – it gets them talking at home, in the classroom, etc.” Wild Brew 2019: Benefiting the George Miksch Sutton Avian Research Center will be held 5-8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24, at the Cox Business Center in Tulsa. Tickets are tax-deductible and available at www.wildbrew.org.

The Sutton Center
The Sutton Center is an internationally-recognized conservation nonprofit organization dedicated to finding conservation solutions for birds and the natural world through science and education. Located on a 40-acre campus in rural Bartlesville, the center is the former home Harold and Sandy Price, Harold is one of the businessmen who helped create the Sutton Center in 1983. A second site is dedicated to the conservation of the Attwater’s prairie chicken, also in Bartlesville, on 80 acres. The George M. Sutton Avian Research Center was named in honor of George Miksch Sutton, who until his death in 1982 served as Professor Emeritus at the University of Oklahoma and as an example to all aspiring field ornithologists. Who’s Who gives and account of Sutton, describing him as a “most prominent ornithologist of his time.” A biography of his work lists 13 books, 18 monographs and museum publications, 201 journal articles, 12 book reviews, four obituaries, 18 popular articles and eight essays. He also illustrated at least another 18 books. As Sutton was intensely interested in hands-on studies of birds in the field, he was commemorated by the center’s being named in his honor.

he Oklahoma Aquarium will host its first Salsa Tasting Festival on Saturday, August 17, 2019, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. The Salsa Tasting Festival celebrates the diversity of flavors this summer for the thousands of families who visit the aquarium annually. “We plan to host more cultural events at the Oklahoma Aquarium, and we’re excited to partner with local Hispanic organizations and restaurants for this event,” says Liz Medrano, the event coordinator for the Salsa Tasting Festival. Activities include a jalapeño eating contest and more fun throughout the day. The event will culminate in a salsa tasting contest
when attendees vote on their favorite salsa in three categories: Mild, Hot, and Anything Goes. The salsa contest is open to restaurants, home chefs, amateurs, salsa manufacturers, and local farmers who are interested in showcasing their products. “I’m excited for our guests to try new restaurants and get a variety of options,” Medrano says. “Mexican and Spanish cuisines are so diverse that all local restaurants will offer their own unique flavors and special touches to their salsas.” Salsa contest winners will receive awards, a behind-thescenes tour of the aquarium, and of course, bragging rights as

The Value of a
Banking Jesse Jones (L) and Eddie Curran
How often do you connect with your banker? Whether you are a new or seasoned business owner, building a relationship with a banker can help you tremendously, says business owner Jesse Jones, JJS Fleet Repair, speaking from experience. Jesse has been a diesel mechanic for 15-plus years. Last year, he decided it was time to start his own company. After opening an account at RCB Bank, he was connected with Eddie Curran, business services manager, who became his main contact during his startup and continues to stay in regular contact. “Eddie has been a life saver,” Jesse says. “For a first-time business owner, the financial part was scary. He helps me by being available to answer my questions, choose the right business services and direct me to the right people.” “I am his personal concierge,” Eddie chimes in. “It’s my job to take care of his banking needs so he can take care of his customers. When he needs help, I hook him up with the right person. I also help him identify financial issues or possible needs he may not be thinking about.”
Relationship by Jocelyn Wood
Ripple Effect: The customer tosses a rock into the water. He wants to start a business, build a house or invest for retirement. He is focusing on the rock. “I focus on the ripples the rock creates,” Eddie says. “A customer is often focused on their present need, an account for example, but I’m looking six months or a year down the road and anticipating his future needs – cash management services, a new work truck,” he says. “It’s not about selling products. I’m servicing needs. And, when his needs change, we’re ready.”
Jessie says that when it comes to a bank, it is not about one product or service he likes most, but about improving his business by helping him manage his finances so he can focus on servicing his contractors.
Like when Jesse was ready to purchase a work truck, Garrett Chaney, RCB Bank market president, stepped in to help. "Open and honest communication is the key to a successful partnership," Garrett says. “Early on when Jesse switched from being a consumer customer to a commercial customer there were some growing pains, but he knew I would keep his interests at the forefront. By explaining why we should do things a little different for his commercial business, he became comfortable with the nature of business banking.”

“I may not always like what I hear at first,” Jesse says, like when Garrett said he needed to have his work truck on a shorter-term loan to avoid negative equity in case he needs to replace it in a few years due to his high driving volume. “After mulling it over, I understood where he was coming from. I knew he was helping me dodge a potential loss.”

“My bank helps me by just being available for my needs as I continue to grow,” Jones said. “I enjoy being able to pull up to the drive-thru and they know me and my family by name. I can call them and know that whatever my need, they’ll take care of it.” How well do you know your banker? Call them and start building that relationship today.

Here’s what our customers have to say about PermaSeal U.S.A. Preserve Your Investment We wanted to write you to express how satisfied we are with your product, service and the crew. We built our house 3 years ago including the cedar deck, as soon as we moved in we stained the deck and it looked great. Unfortunately, it only looked good for about 6 months and we knew we had to do something to protect our investment, we were not too excited about the prospect of having to stain our deck, at least once a year, to maintain it. Thank God for Permaseal, your team came out, cleaned the deck and permanently sealed the deck with the penetrating sealant. Now it looks just like the day we moved in and we do not have to stain it, unless we want
a different color than the natural wood look. Further, cleaning it is a breeze, no need to power wash it, simply hose it down. We are so happy to know we have protected our investment for at least 25 years and we have just scheduled your team to come out and permanently seal our drive way as well. We can highly recommend Permaseal to everyone that is looking for a permanent solution, peace of mind. The whole thing was a very pleasurable experience. From the initial visit, where you thoroughly explained the entire process, with no sales pressure. To the polite, punctual and professional crew that came and did the work. Thank you again for helping us preserve our investment.

If You Give
e n o y n A a cookie BY SHANNON SMITH
O
ne of my favorite children’s story books is If You Give A Mouse A Cookie by Laura Numeroff. It’s a silly story about a mouse who is offered a cookie, but wants a dozen other things before finally getting the cookie. At my house you can always get them because I keep a bag of frozen baked cookies in my freezer at all times! Even better, I have bags of frozen cookie dough balls ready to pop into the oven. In just minutes there are freshly baked cookies ready in case I need to bribe, console, or happy-up someone! My UPS driver (I call him my driver because he delivers to my house nearly every day) receives a “thank you” cookie from me often, and I’ve been known to pass out cookies to those who labor in my yard. It’s just a simple way to show appreciation, and I can’t tell you how

many times I’m told, “I haven’t had a homemade cookies in years.” (How can that be?) I have to admit I don’t have a sweet tooth, and I rarely partake in the cookie party that comes out of my oven. I’d much prefer a wedge of cheese, but I know I’m in the minority. I’m probably most known for my triple chocolate cookies because they’re like a brownie on steroids. The citrus ricotta cookies are great too, and satisfy those people who love anything lemony. When my kids were in school I tried to convince them that taking cookies to their teachers was never a bad idea. Sometimes at teacher conferences I would ask the teacher what her favorite cookie was, so I could file that very important information in my brain, and use it in the most necessary circumstances. I’d like to think at least

one of those bags of cookies I sent to school helped soothe the stress and frustrations in the life of a teacher. It doesn’t hurt to bake cookies for your spouse either. I’ve learned that a couple of warm cookies can cover a whole lot of mistakes, or at least I hope so! But with that said, I have to mention Laura Numeroff’s recent book called If You Give A Man A Cookie, a funny parody about how a man asks for a cookie, but spends the entire day obtaining it. I’ve chosen five of my favorite cookie recipes, which are on www. beadsandbasil.com, but here are two that are sure to make someone’s day.

Bluegrass & Chili Festival
BY TOM FINK
B
Bringing the Sizzle Back to Wagoner
luegrass artists near and far have been rosining up their bows to play their fiddles hard at the upcoming Bluegrass & Chili Festival. Celebrating its 40th anniversary this September, the Bluegrass & Chili Festival is two days of live “pepper hot” music on three stages, activities, food, fun and chili in downtown Wagoner. Where there’s the Bluegrass & Chili Festival, there is also Dell Davis. Davis, the special events coordinator with the City of Wagoner, has been with the festival from the start, first as a volunteer, and then as its organizer. “I’ve been with the festival every year from the very beginning except for one year – the year my twins were born, so I had sort of a legitimate reason for not being there,” Davis laughed. “We did the show 20 years in Tulsa in the very beginning, moved around, and this year will be our second (year) to be in

Wagoner, and to be honest, we couldn’t be happier. “Being here, the shows and the entertainment are downtown again, which gets us back to where we started, in a way,” she said. “People who have been coming to the festival for years, after we came to Wagoner told us that it really reminded them of when we were still in Tulsa – the downtown. There’s just something about the acoustics when the artists perform in the downtown area versus a more open area that truly enhances the sound.” And what a sound it’s going to be. As in previous years, the festival will be featuring a host of awardwinning artists to entertain the audiences. Among the audiencepleasing headliners slated to perform are Country Music Hall of Famers Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder, plus frequent festival favorites, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver. Multitalented singer, songwriter and performer Rhonda Vincent also will be returning this year, with her band The Rage, as will Russell Moore and IIIrd Tyme Out and The Edgar Loudermilk Band. “Back by popular demand, we have the grasshiphopfusion, and the just plain funny, The Cleverlys -- their comedy and unusual music will leave audiences wanting more,” Davis said. “Add the superb talents of fiddle extraordinaire Michael Cleveland and Flamekeeper this is a menu of sizzling entertainment.”

In addition to the more wellknown artists, top regional bands will be entertaining on three different stages, performing a variety of music, such as country, bluegrass, gospel, classic rock, and rhythm and blues. Further, other musical entertainment highlights will be The “Junior Showcase,” which is designed to give talented young people 21 and under stage exposure and experience in a noncompetitive showcase. As an extra incentive, an acoustic guitar will be awarded by a drawing of all the participants, and various dance groups will be kicking up their heels onstage at the festival. But as there is bluegrass, so there is chili and the prestigious chili cookoff.
