ASK THE MONEY MAVEN STRAIGHT-FORWARD, NO-NONSENSE TALK ABOUT YOUR MONEY

Strategies Aimed at Maximizing Your Social Security Benefits limit on your earnings.

BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT

In the old days, the Social Security Administration would send you a Social Security statement each year in the mail. It estimated what your benefits would be if you retired at your full retirement age, at age 70, and also at age 62 (which is the earliest you can apply for benefits). You can retire as early as 62 and take benefits at a reduced rate. If you work after your full retirement age, you can receive higher benefits because of additional earnings and credits for delayed retirement. Full retirement age is determined based on what year you were born. If you were born in 1938 or earlier, full retirement age is 65. If you were born between 1943 and 1959, your full retirement age is 66 (plus a few months depending on the exact year of your birth). If you were born 1960 or later, full retirement age is 67. So basically, the age to receive full Social Security benefits is inching upward each year. Before long, who knows? You may have to be 80 years old to retire with full benefits. Hopefully, I’m joking here. If you are eligible for retirement benefits, your current or divorced spouse (so long as you were married for 10 years or more) and minor children may also receive benefits. Each may qualify for up to about 50 percent of your benefit amount. Social Security statements are no longer delivered to you each year via mail. However, you can easily go online and sign up for an account with the Social Security Administration and check what your estimates would be. Just go to www.socialsecurity.gov. It’s easy and free! Many people believe that Social Security benefits are designed to replace 100% of your income when you retire. It is not! Social Security benefits are not intended to be your

• When can I apply for Social Security retirement benefits? You can apply for Social Security retirement benefits when you are at least 61 years and 9 months of age. You should apply three months before you want your benefits to start. Even if you are not ready to retire, you should still sign up for Medicare three months before your 65th birthday.

only source of income when you retire. On average, Social Security will replace about 40 percent of your annual pre-retirement earnings. You will need other savings, investments, pensions, or retirement accounts to make sure you have enough money to live comfortably when you retire. So, if you don’t want to find yourself up a creek without a paddle, you need to start pinching your pennies now and building your retirement savings. The following are questions that my clients often ask about Social Security: • Will withdrawals from my individual retirement account affect my Social Security benefits? Social Security does not count pensions payments, annuities, or the interest or dividends from your savings and investments as earnings. They do not lower your Social Security retirement benefits. However, if you take benefits prior to your full retirement age, and you are receiving earned income (from employment) over the yearly earnings limit, your benefit will be reduced. For 2015, that yearly earnings limit is $15,720. For every $2 over the limit, they will deduct $1 from your benefit payment. After you reach full retirement age, you can receive full benefits with no

• If you are already collecting your retirement benefit and are at or over full retirement age, you can tell Social Security you want to suspend further benefits and then ask them to restart your benefits at a later date, like at age 70. Social Security will then apply its Delayed Retirement Credit to your existing benefit once you start collecting again. So, if you are willing to give up your Social Security income for a while, you may be able to collect higher benefits later. It’s important to have as full a handle of Social Security’s guidelines as possible. For information about more Social Security ideas I’ve learned over the years that you may not know or fully understand, give us call. McDonald’s Now Has Breakfast All Day Breakfast fans everywhere are happy McDonald’s is now offering a limited breakfast menu any time of day.

By Jim Butcher

McDonald’s listening to the customers who have been asking for an all-day breakfast menu for a long time,” Tim said. Tim noted that McDonald’s has been experimenting with this idea at several different locations across the country. “One location was in San Diego, and we visited their facilities in order to get a better understanding of what was involved in the operation, and especially what it took for a transformation.” The all-day menu will be limited to a couple of breakfast sandwiches, pancakes, and sides. McDonald’s restaurants will serve either the McMuffin or biscuit sandwiches — not both — depending on local preferences, according to the company. Restaurants serving McMuffin sandwiches will serve only three kinds: egg, sausage with egg, and sausage. Those serving biscuit sandwiches will also have three options: bacon, egg, and cheese; sausage with egg; and sausage. Pancakes, sausage burritos, yogurt, and oatmeal will also be on the menu. McGriddles and bagels will not be available. Hash browns may be available at some restaurants. McDonald’s is limiting the menu to prevent kitchens from getting overwhelmed by cooking breakfast and burgers at the same time. The chain previously

For the past couple of weeks, the 79 McDonald’s restaurants in Green Country have been enjoying an edge on the chain’s 14,300-plus locations in the United States, by offering a limited breakfast menu beginning on September 14. On October 6, the McDonald’s chain goes nationwide with all-day breakfast, after franchisees voted to approve the proposal. “I’m excited about the menu change,” said Tim Rich. He and his wife, Patty, own five McDonald’s locations: three in Owasso, plus Claremore and Mannford. “I’m excited about

To Tim, being a part of big enough to handle breakfast McDonald’s is all about offering and lunch items. Corporate said it comes down to the sheer size of kitchen grills. “They simply don’t have the room for all of our menu options at one time, especially considering we use our grill to prepare many items on our breakfast menu.” Franchisees are adding equipment like extra grills and toasters to accommodate the new breakfast hours. Rich said it is quite expensive to expand breakfast hours. Tim Rich has been a part of the McDonald’s family for 48 years, since he was 16 years old. McDonald’s uses real eggs and butter, water that is charcoal filtered not one but five times, top-notch orange juice, and biscuits and pies from the local Bama company. All ingredients and nutritional information are available on tray liners and packaging, as well as on the website, www.mcdonalds. com. “You can make good or poor choices anywhere, even at home,” said Tim. “We want to make sure we offer plenty of good choices.” And choices are what a Tim Rich-owned McDonald’s is all about – choices that help you get the best value for your money.

Improve Your Child’s Confidence, End Your Frustration

Academic Advantage, LLC transforms children’s challenges so they become comfortable, confident, and independent learners.

By Carol Beck-Round Self-esteem is your child’s passport to a lifetime of mental health and social happiness. It is the foundation of a child’s wellbeing and the key to success as an adult. Students who are struggling with schoolwork often feel helpless and inadequate, thus lowering their self-confidence. In turn, you as a parent frequently feel worried and

frustrated. If your child experiences challenges in school, such as inability to stay focused, test anxiety, inability to complete assignments on time, struggles with reading fluency and comprehension, acts impulsively, or exhibits symptoms of dyslexia, Dr. Trissy Pitkin, founder of Academic Advantage, LLC, offers help and hope. Dr. Pitkin has experienced great success in helping countless children with

their learning struggles. As a result, these children feel more confident, comfortable and successful in school, and their parents feel less anxiety and frustration. Dr. Pitkin, who has 24 years of experience in both the public and private school sector, specializes in dyslexia remediation, reading challenges, attention training, and test taking techniques, as well as having extensive training in ADD/ADHD. Dr. Pitkin has her doctorate in Clinical Christian Counseling and holds a master’s degree in MultiCategorical Disabilities, as well as being a Certified Educational Therapist, ADD/ADHD Coach, Reading Specialist, and Dyslexia Remediation Specialist. Since 1988 she has taught in various capacities as a Certified Early Childhood and Elementary School Teacher (Grades Pre-K through 6th Grade). Further, she has taught Music, been a Reading Specialist, and a Special Education Teacher. She has also developed and implemented an RTI (Response to Early Intervention) program, Early Childhood, Reading, and Language Arts programs. Dr. Pitkin is a member of the Educational Therapists Association and International Dyslexia Association. Twenty years ago, Dr. Pitkin founded Academic Advantage, LLC. Academic Advantage, LLC provides assessments and consultations, as well as a variety of research-based techniques and strategies to fit the needs of each child. “I’ve spent years researching various methodologies so I can now

year finals. Thank you!” said Tara. “Dr. Pitkin has changed not only our son’s life, but ours too. My husband and I had a difficult time understanding how our son learned. She explained in a way that we understood and educated us on how to best help him. We are so appreciative,” said Susan. “Thank you so much for helping our son. At the end of the school year, his teacher asked him what he was doing as he had made such remarkable progress in reading. He said, ‘Dr. Pitkin is helping me.’ I was so happy by my son’s progress that we now send our younger children to her as well. Their test scores have soared. For the first time, I am learning what it is like to enjoy Parent-Teacher Conferences. Thank you!” said Lori. “The learning experience happens differently for each child,” says Dr. Pitkin. “It’s like a puzzle. After we understand what is really happening with a child, we can put the pieces together to create the whole picture.”

utilize the most effective techniques, strategies, and programs to effectively reach the child,” she says. Dr. Pitkin provides Educational Therapy which addresses the root cause of the underlying issue of the child’s challenge. By examining gross and fine motor skills, visual and auditory processing, attention and memory, academics, and social and family dynamics, she is able to develop and implement an individualized roadmap for success for each child. Academic Advantage, LLC is unique in its approach because Dr. Pitkin collaborates with both the child’s teacher as well as the parents. “It’s a team effort,” she adds. Dr. Pitkin also offers a Third Grade Guarantee Program. “Your child will pass the state reading test or 50 percent of the parents’ investment will be refunded,” she says. The Third Grade Guarantee Program includes: an assessment, reading software, and twice a week, 60-minute sessions. For this guarantee to be valid, the child must attend two 60-minute sessions per week. The result of your child participating in this program is that they will experience significant improvement in reading skills, comprehension skills, test taking skills, and attention. Here is what some of her parents have said: “Test anxiety has crippled my daughter. After seeing Dr. Pitkin, my daughter was able to use her test taking strategies which allowed my daughter to score very well on her state reading test and all of her end of

UUncorking the Cure for MS The 14th annual dinner and auction benefiting the National MS Society will be October 15 at Cain’s Ballroom.

By Gena Hyde

On Thursday, October 15, the National MS Society will host the 14th annual Uncorking the Cure for MS with a western chic theme at the legendary Cain’s Ballroom. This annual dinner and auction raises funds to fuel progress in MS research, and supports much needed programs and services that help each person living with MS live their best life. Singer, performer and bandleader Cindy Cain was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2000. Raised in Pryor, Oklahoma, Cindy honed her vocals and style while living in Washington, D.C. before relocating in 2001 to Tulsa, where she has received many accolades for her work. After years of performing in various venues in Washington, D.C. and Oklahoma, Cindy’s performance schedule has slowed down mainly due to fatigue from her MS. However, she continues to lend her time and talent to raise funds and awareness for multiple sclerosis through events such as Uncorking the Cure for MS and Walk MS. Cindy attended Uncorking the Cure for MS for the first time in 2014 with members of her Walk MS team. She bought tickets as a way to thank her friend and team captain of Violette’s

Vengeance, Donna Leming. “I’ve been touched from the start by Donna’s persistence in raising money for MS research.” Another friend, who also lives with MS and is a volunteer with the National MS Society, encouraged Cindy to become more actively involved in Uncorking the Cure for MS. Cindy is a member for the event’s steering committee and is the featured entertainment with her band. “Working on the steering committee and performing at this year’s Uncorking the Cure for MS is the coalescence of two

threads – a thread of persistence and a thread of advocacy, by others on my behalf. I’m grateful to have the opportunity to share my story if it helps someone else and to say thank you to those who have helped and inspired me,” Cindy said. “Everyone on the MS spectrum – persons living with MS, their family and friends, caregivers, physicians, researchers – needs every bit of persistence and advocacy we can muster.” Uncorking the Cure for MS attendees will enjoy catering by Lambrusco’z to Go, Triumph Cellars Wines, live and silent

Multiple sclerosis, an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system, interrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body.

Symptoms range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatment are moving us closer to a world free of MS. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, with at least two to three times more women than men being diagnosed with the disease. MS affects more than 2.3 million people worldwide. In 2014, the Society invested $50.6 million to advance more than 380 research projects around the world in order to stop MS in its tracks, restore what has been lost, and end MS forever. Through its comprehensive nationwide network of programs and services, it also helped more than one million people affected by MS connect to the people, information and resources needed to live their best lives.

Since the age of 18, he has worked with several area Chevrolet dealers, beginning as a porter and quickly graduating to detailer, techni-

I’m really glad to be the service manager at Jim Glover Chevrolet, and I appreciate the fact that the organization places such a strong emphasis on integrity. With this attitude, business is going to be good and you’re going to make customers happy.” The attitude permeating Jim Glover Chevrolet is to hire talented people and empower them to do their jobs. Technicians are ASE trained and David promotes cross-training with all his service employees, as annual training goals are set for each individual. “Each year GM introduces new training requirements, and we ensure that our technicians and service advisors receive all required and recommended training to keep them on top of their game.”

ZZap Bedbugs with Frostbite Mother Nature’s Pest Control announces subzero method of stopping bedbugs dead in their tracks.

By Duane Blankenship My home is clean, so I’ll never have to worry about bedbugs, right? Wrong! The experts at Mother Nature’s Pest Control say the bedbug problem has reached pandemic proportions. Bedbugs are now a widespread epidemic affecting people around the world. Shelia Disler, Justin Buckmaster and Andrea Monks are the bedbug experts at Mother Nature’s, and they have some alarming facts to share. Bedbugs are round, nocturnal insects that subsist on a diet of blood. They snack on mammals, and given the choice, they prefer us humans. Most of the time bedbugs are thin and slightly transparent. Once they’ve dined, they are fat and brown. Because you and I are their favorite snack, they’ve become very adept at hiding in our houses – in beds, cracks in the walls, electrical fittings – anywhere, in fact, where they can get close to us but stay out of sight. Bedbugs aren’t dirty, they don’t spread disease, they move slowly, and they can’t fly. But when they bite, they make you itch like crazy. “Bedbugs are one of nature’s best hitchhikers,” says Shelia, “and today they are found in even the finest homes, hotels and motels, movie theaters, restaurants,

Mother Nature’s team of bedbug experts, Justin Buckmaster, Shelia Disler and Andrea Monks, with the new Frostbite application wand for killing bedbugs and other pests dead on contact. subways and other public transportation. Wherever we go, they go!” (Are you itching yet?) Although you can’t eliminate an infestation of bedbugs yourself, you can enlist professionals to fight the battle. Mother Nature’s has just introduced Frostbite, a sub-zero method of freezing bedbugs on contact. Frostbite is also effective on roaches and other pests. “Frostbite disrupts all life

stages of the bedbug,” says Justin. “We recommend a minimum of five treatments that include Frostbite and other conventional follow-up treatments to eliminate the tiny critters. People don’t realize it, but bedbugs also hide under baseboards, between mattresses, in plastics like kids’ walkers and toys, in suitcases and travel bags and, literally, just about anywhere. We’ve even found them in breath-

ing machines.” Here are some great tips from Andrea to help you reduce the risk of getting bedbugs in your home: When you travel, don’t put your luggage on the bed. Inspect motel rooms prior to “moving in.” The safest place for luggage is the bath tub. (Bedbugs hate porcelain and tile.)

When you get home, leave the luggage in the garage. Put all the clothes from your luggage in the dryer and turn the dry cycle on high. (Temperatures over 115 degrees F will kill bedbugs.) After putting clothes through one dry cycle, wash them and then do another dry cycle. Bedbugs love clutter. If guilty, remove clutter. When you order something online or through the mail, don’t open it inside your home. The number one carrier of bedbugs today is secondhand furniture. (Mother Nature’s recommends a treatment of Frostbite before bringing furniture into your home.) As always, use good sense and good judgment. If you do find bedbugs, call Mother Nature’s to launch a treatment with Frostbite.

LLower Your Utility Bills Community Builders offers customers great suggestions for efficient home improvement.

By Duane Blankenship Community Builders, Inc. President Greg Wolter founded the organization while working out of his home more than 30 years ago. The company does home remodeling throughout most of Oklahoma, Arkansas, Southeast Kansas, and Southwest Missouri. They are not general contractors, but rather specialize in work they know best and do really well. That includes energy-efficient composite siding and replacement windows, bath

remodels, GutterProUSA gutter guard systems, sunrooms that are second to none, and metal roof systems. According to Greg, throughout their long history, Community Builders has impressed customers with their professionalism and dedication to customer service. “We’re grateful to be able to provide outstanding products and services to our clients and are thankful for the opportunity they’ve given us to earn their business,” he said.

Now is a great time to be thinking about roofs. Greg says a common shingle has an average life expectancy of only seven years, and a quality, top-of-theline shingle should last about 11 years. Community Builders is currently featuring metal shingles and stone-coated metal shingles that carry 50-year labor and materials warranties. Yes, they cost more than run-of-themill composite shingles, but compare the life expectancies. Greg says that most insurance

companies also discount premiums on homeowner policies up to 35 percent for stone-coated or metal roofs. “When we install our metal roofing products, we put a layer of insulation under the roof that should save customers money on both their heating and cooling utility bills,” he explained. When asked by customers how long he thinks a metal roof will really last, Greg answers, “I don’t know. We’ve only been in business for 30 years!” You’ll definitely want to check out Community Builders’ metal roof deals that will save you money on installation. You’ll also receive a Green Energy Barrier installed that employs advanced space age technology. With the Energy Barrier, Greg says customers can expect to save from 20 to 40 percent on cooling bills and a little less on heating. Community also offers 12 months “same as cash” or easy low payment plans to suit you and your budget. “When you install a traditional shingle to your home, it does nothing to improve the home’s value,” says Greg. “With Community Builders’ metal or stone-coated metal shingles, your home’s value will improve.” Some of the other quality products you’ll find at Community Builders include Jacuzzi walk-in tubs, custombuilt sunrooms that let you enjoy the outdoors in comfort regardless of the weather or season, Cedar Ridge Vinyl Siding that provides your home with the look of freshly painted cedar without the upkeep of

traditional wood siding, and Enviro View Premium Windows. These replacement windows are advertised to improve energy savings by up to 40 percent with their energyefficient design that is airtight, reflects hot summer air, and locks out cool air during the worst of winter; plus they are durable and incredibly simple to maintain. Homeowners report over 40% savings on their heating and air conditioning bills. If you’re thinking of remodeling to make your house a dream home, rest assured that Community Builders is a professional and respected organization. You can review their record with the Better Business Bureau and the Greater Tulsa Home Builders Association. They have also been recognized by the National Association of Siding and Window Dealers with the highly coveted Business Ethics Award. Now is the time to check out the really great offerings from Community Builders. Visit their website or give them a call to schedule your free estimate to improving your home.

Comprehensive Care for Children

Strength of Mind Behavioral Health offers compassionate, effective treatment for children who suffer from disorders including depression, ADD/ADHD, anxiety, bipolar disorder, autism, and more.

By Sheryl Sowell School has been in session for a couple months now, and many parents have already received the dreaded phone call (or calls) from their child’s teacher saying, “Johnny has been loud and disruptive in class,” or “Susie is easily distracted and has difficulty paying attention.” For most children, a certain level of problematic behavior is normal and to be expected. Some children, however, experience difficulties on a regular and repeated basis – they are not one-time occurrences, but a daily struggle. According to Angela McConnell, pediatric nurse practitioner at Strength of Mind Behavioral Health, “Oftentimes behavioral problems go unnoticed or are put on the backburner by parents and guardians, and it is the teacher calling every day that causes it to become evident a child is experiencing a more serious issue that needs to be addressed.” Strength of Mind Behavioral offers comprehensive programs for children and adolescents ages 5 to 18 to treat a large array of disorders, including anxiety, depression, ADD/ADHD, bipolar disorder, autism and others. Treatment options include

counseling and medication. “Mood swings are common in adolescents, so it can be difficult for family members to see the gravity of a problem. It is often easier for teachers to see there is something more serious going on when they have 30 other children to compare to,” says Angela. “A child may suffer from anxiety, for example, if he or she is regularly tearful, irritable, experiences panic attacks, refuses to do things, and has stomach pains and nausea in the mornings before school. Children with ADD/ADHD typically exhibit hyperactivity, difficulty with change, or inability to focus. Symptoms for disorders often overlap, so all of the pieces of the puzzle are valuable to determining the course of action to take.” If you are a parent or guardian seeking help, call the office of Strength of Mind Behavioral. The first appointment takes about 45 minutes and involves a meeting to discuss what is going on, the child’s medical history, and taking their vitals including height and weight. When counseling and/or medication is the next step, the family also works with Tracy Loper, M.D., and Ashlee Graham, physician assistant.

If it is determined that bipolar disorder or autism is a possibility, the following appointment requires a four-hour testing process. “To illustrate the range, there are 131 different types of autism, including high and low functioning and everything in between. At Strength of Mind Behavioral, we do everything possible to determine exactly what the issue is to help your child The children’s care team at Strength of Mind Behavioral Health improve their quality of life.” includes (L to R): Tracy Loper, M.D.; Ashlee Graham, P.A.-C.; The staff of Strength of Mind and Angela McConnell, APRN. People, pets and carpet will be the focus on October 17 for Adopt-A-Pet Day at Grigsby’s, 4417 S. Sheridan Rd. As part of a nationwide effort to bring together people and pets that needs homes, Grigsby’s Carpet, Tile & Rug Gallery and STAINMASTER® PetProtect® are partnering with the Tulsa SPCA to showcase adoptable dogs, cats, puppies and kittens. From 10 until 2, the SPCA mobile adoption center will be at Grigsby’s, with animals both inside the mobile center and inside the store. SPCA adoption counselors will be on hand to answer questions and help select the pet that is just right for your family. Since 1913, the non-profit organization, known as the “senior citizen” among animal rescue groups, has been an icon

in the animal community for its efforts to shelter and find forever homes for dogs and cats. Hundreds are adopted each year from its seven-acre parcel on Mohawk Blvd. SPCA’s outreach through the years has expanded to provide a low-cost vaccination service, an ongoing animal cruelty investigation program, weekly pet visitation to residents in 25 area nursing homes (designed to promote the therapeutic animal-human bond), educational programs on pet care and health, and a safe haven for pets of families during domestic violence episodes. And, of course, there is the mobile adoption center, with space for at least 15 animals to make choosing a new pet more comfortable and convenient. When it comes to carpet

RRVs for Everyone Since January 2013, Bob Hurley RV of Tulsa has grown to the top dealer in Oklahoma. By Duane Blankenship Bob Hurley, well-known and respected Oklahoma automotive dealer, partnered with Kim Siex (pronounced “six”) in January of 2013 to launch Bob Hurley RV. Since that time, the pair and their professional staff have far exceeded initial sales plans and personal expectations. Managing Partner Kim says, “Since our opening just a little over two and a half years ago, our growth has been phenomenal, with several expansions including outgrowing our original shop in the first 24 months.” The dealership sells top brand travel trailers, fifth wheels and motor homes, and accessories, and they provide service on any make or model. Kim Siex is a 33-year veteran of the RV industry and started the new venture with just two employees. In the first five months, Bob Hurley RV had grown to 28 employees and

an inventory of over 300 RV units. He has just announced the opening of a 15,000-square-foot PDI (Pre-Delivery Inspection) facility that will open in January of 2016. The PDI facility will house 26 new bays, bringing the dealership’s total to 54 service bays on the premises. “We will be the only RV dealership in Oklahoma with a PDI facility,” added Kim. The new PDI facility will be the center for completing pre-delivery inspections on all operating systems, plus clean ups to make sure each RV is ready for delivery to the customer. According to Kim, Bob Hurley RV has the largest new and used RV inventory in the state. “We have been recognized as the number one dealer in the nation for our sales of Starcraft, Aerolight by Dutchmen, Sundance and Prowler RV units. We are also recognized as a top

Their models are unique with island kitchens, front living rooms, a choice of several bunk house models and toy hauler options. “In short, there’s a perfect Cougar model for your personal tastes.” Kim Siex is the managing partner for Bob Hurley RV, located just west of The American the Arkansas River on West Skelly Drive in Tulsa. AAn Eerie and Bizarre Affair The 2015 Through a Child’s Eye Gala is inspired by the Addams Family characters created by cartoonist Charles Addams.

By Kendra Blevins The 2015 Tulsa Girls Art School fundraiser, Through a Child’s Eye Gala: Inspiring Individuality, The Addams Family, is inspired by the works of iconic cartoonist Charles Addams, whose work was recently brought to Tulsa by Tulsa Girls Art School (TGAS), and the Henry Zarrow Center for Art and Education. Addams is widely known for creating the spooky Addams Family characters, which inspired the 1960s TV series and feature films. “Inspiring Individuality, The Addams Family” is a fantastically eerie gala that will bring to life the essence of the Addams Family through an eccentric fashion show created in conjunction with Ihloff Salon & Day Spa, a new series of gothic style live-paintings presented by the TGAS girls, and an exclusive silent auction featuring the work of Oklahoma artists Chris Mantle, Matt Moffett, Marjorie Atwood and more. Sara Bost Fisher is chair of the event with patron chair Mary Ann Doran and honorary chair Linda Allen, mosaic artist. Ihloff Salon & Day Spa stylists are creating an amazing fashion show with hair and costumes in the spirit of the

Addams Family. “The Addams Family theme adds energy and another dimension of creativity,” says Marilyn Ihloff, owner of Ihloff Salon & Day Spa. “The girls inspire everyone on our team. It’s a great match.” Patron Chair Mary Ann Doran also joins TGAS at this year’s gala. “We’ve always supported TGAS behind the scenes so it’s great to be actually involved,” says Doran. “The quality of work from the girls at TGAS and the diversity of their education is impressive.” Patron Chair Linda Allen collaborated with beginning and intermediate students on a mosaic project that will be available at the auction the night of the gala. “I love working with the girls and everyone I know loves this school,” says Allen. “If you haven’t taken the time to visit TGAS, make a point to. It’s a wonderful asset for young artists in our community.” The advanced students, who are mentored by Marjorie Atwood, Linda Allen and Matt Moffett, will also have new works available for purchase during the gala. “Through a Child’s Eye Gala:

Inspiring Individuality, The Addams Family” will be held Thursday, November 12, 2015 in the Tulsa Ballroom of the Cox Business Center, 100 Civic Center. The funds raised by this event will be used to provide the girls with art supplies, quality instruction, transportation and other necessities to create their best artwork. Kids and Adults Agree – Corn Maize Doesn’t Shuck

The annual Corn Maize takes place October 2 through November 8 in Broken Arrow.

By Sheryl Sowell A fall family-friendly tradition returns with the annual Tulsa Corn Maize in Broken Arrow, featuring two corn maizes (one haunted), children’s activities, fire pits, paintball and more. The fun takes place Friday, October 2 through Sunday, November 8. Hours are Friday from 5 to 10 p.m., Saturday from 10 to 10, and Sunday from 1 to 6. Wednesdays will be open for church groups, and Thursdays will be available for other large groups. The maize is also open during the week from 9 to 1 for school field trips. “The Coweta first graders come every year,” says Jack Schlekeway. Jack, aka “Farmer Jack,” builds and operates the maizes each year simply because “so many people love it and would be disappointed if I didn’t!” He also has a lot of fun doing it and loves see the joy on the kids’ faces. Families return year after year for good old-fashioned autumn entertainment. Farmer Jack has been involved with the maize since it first began 14 years ago. The only time the maize hasn’t happened was after the two hot, dry summers a couple years ago when temperatures stayed in the 100s for weeks, preventing the corn from growing. In addition to the regular

corn maize will be a “haunted” maize that begins at dark, complete with costumed spooks jumping out from corners and scaring those brave enough to walk the twists and turns. Children will have a blast with all the fun activities available, including a cow train (a bucket train pulled around by Farmer Jack’s tractor), hayrides, duck races, hay jumps and hay hops, target shooting paintball, and the corn box (a box filled with corn seeds for kids to pile into and

play in). The price of admission includes everything except for paintball target shooting – stop by the “Corn”venient Store to purchase paintballs. Prices are $3 for 50 shots or $5 for 100. Nine fire pits are available for reservation and are always a huge hit with large groups and families. Groups of 15 or more can reserve a fire pit for the entire evening. “Some places charge $20 an hour for a fire pit, so they’re really popular each year,” adds Farmer Jack. You’re invited to bring your

own hot dogs, marshmallows, snacks, and coolers. Farmer Jack provides a supply of fire wood; if groups want more than what is provided, they will need to bring additional wood or purchase more from Jack. A picnic table and stumps for sitting are on hand for each pit, but Farmer Jack encourages groups to bring their lawn chairs. Fire pits must be reserved in advance by calling (918) 232-4299. “You’ll need to call at least 48 hours in advance for a reservation. The fire pits

almost always get booked up early for Fridays and Saturdays.” He also provides two community fire pits for those who haven’t made a reservation and still want to enjoy a toasty fire and tasty smores. Everyone is welcome to bring their own treats to the maize, but the “Corn”venient Store also sells snacks like chips, popcorn, candy, sodas, hot cocoa and smores kits. “I keep my prices around $1 for each item,” says Farmer Jack. The Tulsa Corn Maize is a popular and affordable destination for birthday parties, youth sports team celebrations, Girl Scout gatherings, churches, and family parties. Admission prices are $9 for adults, $7 for children 4 to 12 years old, and 3 and under are free. To get there, simply go east on Kenosha (71st Street) to 321st East Avenue and follow the signs. The event is family friendly; no drinking or smoking is allowed.

Live Halloween Freak Show For the past ten years, Melanie and Ken have enjoyed sponsoring creative Halloween parties, which were originally for their family and friends. The past five years, the parties have transformed into fundraisers designed to benefit local charity organizations. Waterstone has extended an invitation for you to attend the Live Freak Show to benefit Night Light Tulsa. Saturday, October 24 is the date of the Live Freak Show, billed as a tour of the scariest home on earth. Tickets for the event are $15 each and must be purchased in advance at either Waterstone Private Wealth

Management or at Surceé in Owasso, located at 9455 Owasso Expressway, Suite CB. Tours will be conducted between 6 and 9 p.m. Parking will be at Surceé, and those who have pre-purchased tickets will be shuttled to and from the Freak Show by trolley. No private vehicles will be permitted at the event site. You’ll know you’ve arrived at the Freak Show site when you spot the old black hearse in the front yard. “The Freak Show will feature a tour of the house and hot dogs, popcorn and spiked lemonade,” said Melanie. Night Light Tulsa is an oppor-

continued from page 1 tunity for caring Tulsa area residents to build relationships with members of Tulsa’s homeless community. Night Light offers a hot meal, as well as essentials like soap, deodorant, first aid, clothing and foot washing to the homeless who attend the dinners held each Thursday night from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. under the bridge at Maybelle and Brady. “The hope is that each homeless guest will know that they are important and that there are others who care about them,” said Melanie. More information about this program is available online at www.nightlighttulsa.org. Waterstone will also be sponsoring an annual Halloween party

that is by invitation only. It, too, will benefit Night Light Tulsa. The party will be catered by the Waterstone team and will feature corn dogs, funnel cakes, Indian tacos and popcorn, as well as a performance by a professional magician and a fortune teller. John E. Koller Jewelry Opens Doors to Larger Location continued from page 1 explained, when he discussed the move and closing of his old location at 8703Q N. Owasso Expressway. Of course, Baxter (a long-haired dachshund) will be there to greet you. The new store will have a center showcase, and the watch line will be enhanced. Koller said extra space means more work stations, enabling his employees to better serve customers. “Please remember that we can make anything you want. An original creation begins with a wax carving, progresses to an investment stage, and finally to the casting of the piece.” Mr. Koller, who has been in the jewelry industry for 30 years, has even replicated tattoo designs into jewelry. While custom jewelry can be created from scratch, it can also be done by reworking or restyling a hand-me-down or heirloom. Such items can become the foundation for creating unique and original rings and pendants. John’s career began in his native state of New Jersey. For 16 years, he worked side by side with many talented jewelers. He absorbed their ideas and learned their different methods of creating custom pieces. In 2002 at a jewelry trade show in New York, Koller met Tim Felts, who owned Felts Diamond and Design, a custom design jewelry store in Tulsa. He asked John to work for him. Thirteen years ago, Koller accepted Tim’s offer and moved to Tulsa. Working at Felts introduced John to the different kinds of tools and equipment that helped fine-tune his techniques and further develop his talent for designing and making custom jewelry. He always enjoyed working at what he affectionately refers to as “mom and

210 West Fourth Street Claremore, OK • 918.342.2544

pop stores.” For several years, he thought of opening his custom design business. When Felts closed their doors in 2007, the opportunity came and John opened John E. Koller Jewelry Designs & Repair in Owasso, where he now calls home. Koller’s retail store carries a variety of rings, bracelets, necklaces, and pendants, and he specializes in custom oneof-a-kind pieces, plus all types of jewelry repairs. He is also a jewelry restoration specialist. You never have to worry about your precious piece being sent across town or across the country for repairs. All work is done at the store by John or Jonathan, another master craftsman on site. They can do minor repairs, battery replacements, and complete overhaul of watches and clocks. They have the capability to work with all precious metals. In both 2005 and 2006, Koller received awards from the Oklahoma Jewelers Association for his outstanding creations. Store hours are Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Clinical Trial for Alzheimer’s Disease Accepting Patients

Tulsa Clinical Research is currently conducting a clinical trial testing a new investigational medication to help maintain memory and delay mental decline in those in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease. By Sheryl Sowell Tulsa Clinical Research conducts clinical trials in all phases. One of their most vital trials currently is for Alzheimer’s disease, now underway to test a new drug that shows promise for slowing the relentless progression of memory loss and mental decline in Alzheimer’s patients. The

clinical research study is testing whether this investigational drug can help maintain memory and day-to-day living in people with mild Alzheimer’s disease. There hasn’t been a new drug approved to treat Alzheimer’s in a decade, but researchers are working hard to change that. Ralph W. Richter, MD,

Dr. Ralph W. Richter, founder and president of Tulsa Clinical Research.

FACP, established Tulsa Clinical Research, LLC in 1986. As its founder and current president, Dr. Richter’s experience is unparalleled. He maintains a private practice in neurology and neuropsychiatry. Dr. Richter is also Clinical Professor of Neurology and Psychiatry at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine in Tulsa. In addition to numerous other publications, he is the author of “Alzheimer’s Disease: A Physician’s Guide to Practical Management.” Dementia is an overall term for diseases and conditions characterized by a decline in memory or other thinking skills that affects a person’s ability to perform everyday activities. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia. Dr. Richter shares a few signs that someone may have dementia: being unable to remember things; asking the same question or repeating the same story over and over; becoming lost in familiar places; being unable to follow directions; getting confused about time, people, and places; trouble understanding visual images and spatial relationships; new problems with words in speaking or writing; neglecting personal

safety, hygiene, and nutrition; decreased or poor judgment; withdrawal from work or social activities; and changes in mood and personality, including apathy and depression. Everyone experiences a phenomenon called age-related memory loss. As we get older, our memory simply isn’t what it used to be. Many people, however, use this common, normal forgetfulness as an excuse to ignore more serious memory problems. If you have a relative or loved one with whom you’re concerned may have more serious memory problems, observe them for a few weeks; this will help you get a feeling if their memory problems are a normal part of aging, or if it could possibly be something more serious. The trials at Tulsa Clinical Research are sponsored by the National Alzheimer’s Association and the National Institute of Aging. Their goal is to identify those at risk and treat with medication before symptoms become severe. The prevention studies at Tulsa Clinical Research utilize imaging procedures to look at an individual’s brain structure and metabolism to determine if they are at risk to develop Alzheimer’s. “You cannot arrest the disease, but you can slow it down,” says Dr. Richter. “The amount of time between when subtle symptoms of dementia begin and when diagnosis occurs is eight years – that’s a lot of lost time. It is important to begin preventative treatment as early as possible.” According to the Alzheimer’s Association, 1 in 9 Americans aged 65 or older has Alzheimer’s disease. An estimated five million

Page 27

people are living with this disease in America, and those numbers will increase as the population ages. “It’s important to remember that you’re not alone. Many other people are facing similar challenges,” Dr. Richter adds. With more than 200 national and international clinical research studies, experience is at the core of Tulsa Clinical Research. The staff of Tulsa Clinical Research is dedicated to excellence in research trials. “With minimal screenfailures, rapid enrollment, optimal compliance, study adherence, and caregiver support, our track record is spotless,” says Dr. Richter. “We strictly follow GCP (Good Clinical Practice) and SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) in accordance with FDA regulatory guidelines. Not only do we provide high quality data, our friendly, motivated staff members seek to serve the patient and their family.” Tulsa Clinical Research conducts a large number of other clinical trials including depression, COPD, fibromyalgia, adolescent ADHD, and many more. To learn more about participating in a clinical trial, call (918) 743-2349.

Convenience. Innovation. Caring. The price of depression is staggering. It affects your family, friends, employer, employees, and, of course, you. It leads to indecisiveness about life while healthy development, jobs, hobbies and relationships come to a grinding halt. At Strength of Mind Behavioral Health, our goal is to “go all out” for the people who come to us for help; we feel it is the right thing to do. We provide a comprehensive approach to treating depression, remaining beside you and guiding you on your journey to health and wellbeing. We offer a level of caring for our patients that larger institutions do not provide - we get to know our patients and take a

sincere interest in their health and progress. In fact, our patients become our family. We are their cheerleaders and genuinely want them to succeed. Strength of Mind was one of the first in Tulsa to provide TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation). TMS therapy is an FDA approved, non-invasive medical treatment for major depression. The treatment gives direct MRI strength pulse stimulation to the frontal lobe of the brain, compelling neurons to start firing and restoring the brain to normal functioning levels while elevating moods and encouraging ambition. It is so important to us that we

offer TMS because it is a unique treatment that does something pills and old style shock therapy cannot do. It is gentler and easier on the patient than other treatments, and it has been proven effective in helping patients overcome depression. Before TMS, there was a significant gap in care.

Dr. Jeff McIlroy, Chief of Psychiatry for Strength of Mind, says their TMS treatment is a three-pronged approach to treating and recovering from depression

Questions Most Often Asked About TMS Therapy What is TMS Therapy? TMS, or Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, is an FDA-cleared proven non-drug treatment for depression, specifically for patients with depression who have not benefited from initial antidepressant medication. How does TMS Therapy work? NeuroStar TMS Therapy uses pulses of magnetic energy, precisely targeted at a key area of the brain known to be underactive in depression sufferers. This area is called the prefrontal cortex. By stimulating this local area, neurons in the prefrontal cortex communicate to deeper brain neurons causing a secondary effect on remaining areas of the brain involved in mood. These effects are intended to restore normal function and lift the symptoms of depression. What are the benefits of TMS? TMS Therapy is the first and only non-systemic and non-invasive depression treatment to be cleared by the FDA. It can effectively treat depression in those who cannot tolerate

antidepressant medication or without side effects such as: weight gain, sexual dysfunction, nausea, dry mouth, sedation, etc.

demonstrated that TMS Therapy does not result in any negative effects on memory or concentration.

What are the side effects? The most common side effect associated with TMS Therapy® is pain or discomfort during treatment at or near the treatment area. This pain or discomfort is generally mild to moderate and typically diminishes after the first week of treatment. In clinical trials, less than 5% of patients discontinued NeuroStar treatment due to side effects. NeuroStar treatment also showed no effects on thinking or memory. Because NeuroStar TMS Therapy acts directly on the prefrontal cortex, it lacks the systemic side effects experienced with antidepressant medication. There is a rare risk of seizure associated with TMS Therapy. The risk of seizure in general clinical use is 1 in 30,000 treatments.

Will TMS Therapy help with my depression? Many people with major depression who were treated with TMS experienced significant benefits. In clinical trials, after six weeks of treatment, 1 in 2 patients improved significantly and 1 in 3 patients were completely free of depression symptoms. Efficacy was established in a controlled clinical trial comparing active treatment with the NeuroStar TMS therapy System to an inactive device. Patients treated with active NeuroStar TMS Therapy received an average reduction in their depression symptom score of 22.1% compared to a 9% average reduction in patients receiving inactive treatment.

Does TMS Therapy cause memory loss? No. TMS Therapy was systematically evaluated for its effects on memory. Clinical trials

What is treatment with TMS Therapy like? During treatment, patients recline comfortably and are awake and alert throughout the

TMS Therapy session. No anesthesia or sedation is needed. Treatment involves placement of the magnetic coil against the patient’s head. Patients will hear a clicking sound and feel a tapping sensation on their head during treatment. Each TMS Therapy session takes less than an hour to complete and is conducted right in our TMS Therapy Suite, five days week, for approximately 4-6 weeks. After treatment, patients can immediately return to normal activities. Is TMS Therapy like Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT)? No. TMS Therapy is an outpatient procedure that, unlike electroconvulsive therapy, does not require anesthesia, sedation or the production of a convulsion. Also, TMS therapy does not result in adverse effects on memory or concentration. Can I also take antidepressant medication if I am receiving TMS therapy? Yes. TMS Therapy is safely administered with

8937 S. Garnett Rd., Broken Arrow, OK 74012 • (918) 872-9777

and without antidepressant medications. Is TMS Therapy covered by insurance? Although TMS Therapy is not yet widely covered at this time, some insurance companies have issued coverage policies and many are covering the treatments on a case-by-case basis. Most insurance companies will cover the cost of the initial consultation with Dr. McIlroy to see if this treatment is right for you. We encourage you to inquire with your insurance company regarding their willingness to cover NeuroStar TMS Therapy for you. How long does the antidepressant effect last? Will I need any therapy beyond the first 4-6 weeks? The long-term treatment plan is unique to each individual; in some cases patients may need to come back for individualized treatment sessions if the depression relapses.
