Glow from Head to Toe

Fit For Her - Eleven Years and Going Strong Fit For Her in Owasso celebrates its 11th anniversary with a $500 grand prize giveaway. By Deanna Rebro

With quality equipment, trained employees and no contracts, Touch of Sun Tanning is the place to go for a gorgeous glow.

By Carol Beck-Round Touch of Sun Tanning Salon has loyal support from its customers. The business has received awards not only for their salon in Owasso, but at their Sand Springs facility as well. Maybe that’s because the wellmanaged facilities put emphasis on cleanliness, well-trained employees and quality, top-of-the-line equipment. One other factor that store manager Megan Gomez emphasizes is that Touch of Sun is a no-contract tanning salon. “We don’t feel like we need a contract to keep our customers,” says Megan. “We also do not draft bank accounts. Our customers pay by the month.”

Regular tanners also receive rewards in the form of discounts when they renew monthly. “With Express and Turbo packages, our regular customers can save money each month for continuing to tan with us,” she adds. “It is a way for us to honor our customers.” For the infrequent tanner, a customer can purchase point packages. “This is for the customer who wants to maintain a tan or get just a little bit of color here and there,” says Megan, “and the points do not expire.” Point packages can be used in any combination with the different beds, including the lay down and

Just a few of the friendly faces at Fit For Her include (L to R): Stephanie Webb, staff member; Laura Myers, personal trainer and instructor; Tara Hill, personal trainer; and Adana Gittelman, owner, personal trainer and instructor.

“We have been truly blessed,” says Fit for Her owner Adana Gittleman, as she reflects on the facility’s upcoming 11th anniversary. During a decade when gyms and fitness centers opened and closed by the dozen, Fit for Her in Owasso has continuously grown each year. That is no surprise to members. Designed by a woman, exclusively for women, Fit for Her offers an extraordinarily clean, secure and upscale fitness center at a cost that does not put a strain on the budget. The strength and cardio equipment gleams. The spa-like dressing room features granite countertops, mahogany lockers and individual tile showers. Every inch of the 6,400-square-foot gym is meticulously maintained, with

Money’s Little Secrets come into play in your relationships with your spouse, children, extended family and friends? Who in your household makes decisions about money? Is what you are doing working for you?

BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT

Having been a marriage and family therapist and licensed professional counselor for 11 years and now in the wealth planning and investment business for more than 17 years, I can say I have some hours under my belt when it comes to understanding how people think and feel about their money. It is by far one of the most emotionally charged issues in many people’s lives. People fight about it, lose relationships with their spouses or other family members over it, incessantly worry about it, use it as a tool for power, feel guilty about it, and to top it off… it is often a taboo, off limits subject. It’s like a secret (hush, hush) dirty little subject that people aren’t supposed to talk about. When I meet with folks in my office, they often ask if their situation with money is “normal”. They ask because they have no other way of finding out because no one talks about it. So that is why I have decided to write this column. My intention is to break the silence and start a real discussion about the how, what, and why’s with people and their money.

Since it is the New Year, I thought I’d kick it off with throwing out some Financial New Year’s Resolutions. So here goes… 1) Resolve to become conscious of your financial state. In other words, know what debt you have, what interest you are paying on it, what your current expenses are, what your budget is, if you overspend and where, what investments you have and why, how much you are contributing to your retirement, is it going to be enough, open your statements! Become aware of your finances again. 2) Become aware of your relationship to money. What feelings do you have around money? (Fear, guilt, resentment, etc.) How does it

3) Take action. If you keep doing the same old thing, you are bound to keep getting what you always got. Many people are so afraid of making the wrong decision that they do nothing. Not making a decision is also a decision. Take action. Get all of your investments in one place. Have them reviewed by someone who knows what they are doing. Attend a seminar. Read a financial book. Stop hoping and start doing. Make this a great year! Happy New Year everyone. NNew Year, New You BA Med Spa & Weight Loss Center can help you make your resolution a reality. By Sheryl Sowell

When the New Year comes around, many of us make the same resolution to transform our bodies and finally look and feel how we want. Make 2016 the year you actually achieve your goals! Losing weight isn’t easy. In fact, it may be one of the hardest things you’ve ever attempted. “Why must it be so difficult?” we ask. Melody Spacek of BA Med Spa & Weight Loss Center explains, “The truth behind weight loss is that there is no one cure-all plan. Each of us has different needs, causing us to lose weight differently, which is exactly why our staff treats each of our patients on an individual basis.” BA Med Spa is here to help you achieve your goals. Men and women in their medically supervised weight loss programs have reported impressive weight loss results and formed positive new eating habits. One option in the programs is a regimen of HCG injections. This hormone, naturally produced in the pituitary gland of both genders of all ages, affects fat reserves rather than lean muscle. The injections help fat cells metabolize quickly, so

tomized plan. The weight loss plans at BA Med Spa combine different tools and medications along with constant support both during a patient’s weight loss journey and after their goals are achieved, to ensure patients keep the pounds off for good. Diabetics, women who have just given birth, people preparing for weight loss surgery or who have already had weight loss surgery, and those with numerous other health considerations can be counted among the many patients who have reached and maintained their weight goals. “There’s a newfound self confi-

patients see results in pounds and inches almost from the beginning. “We provide patients with a way to jumpstart weight loss while they learn to replace bad eating and lifestyle habits with healthy ones,” says Malissa Spacek, managing partner of BA Med Spa. First-time patients undergo a physical assessment and blood panel with Dr. James Campbell, managing physician. The information obtained from a patient’s medical history and lab results is then analyzed along with their condition, current lifestyle, and personal needs to form a cus-

of fat reduction, CoolSculpting involves no needles, no anesthesia, no surgery and no downtime. Patients often spend time reading, working on their laptops or simply relaxing while undergoing this treatment. Developed by Harvard scientists, the procedure uses a targeted cooling process that kills the fat cells underneath the skin, literally freezing them to the point of elimination. Only fat cells are frozen – healthy cells remain healthy. Once crystallized, the fat cells die and are naturally eliminated from your body. CoolSculpting is safe, FDAcleared and effective. Results look natural and can be seen as early as three weeks following treatment, with the most dramatic results seen after one to three months. Treatment areas may include the abdomen, upper abdomen, love handles, bra line, inner thighs and backs of thighs. To schedule your complimentary consultation, call (918) 872-9999.

After reaching their weight loss goals, many patients choose CoolSculpting® to complete their new body transformation. This innovative procedure allows patients to lose any of their remaining problem areas, such as stubborn bumps and bulges, without surgery or downtime. Be Careful on the Ice and Snow Dr. Brad Lawson of Central States Orthopedics urges caution all year round, but especially during winter.

By Jim Butcher

One of the biggest medical concerns during the winter months is slipping and falling, and possibly requiring surgery for broken bones. Hospital emergency rooms across the nation tend to see a lot of back injuries, including slipped discs and strains, from shoveling snow. Other common injuries include broken wrists, hip fractures, and even head injuries from falls. Brad Lawson, M.D., of Central States Orthopedics in Owasso, says, “People think of getting snow tires on their car, but they never think of getting show shoes so they don’t slip and fall on the ice.” He urges older adults to be particularly cautious when walking on snow and ice. Dr. Lawson wants everyone to be extremely careful all year, not just in the winter. “The average adult will sustain two fractures over a lifetime, according to a survey by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. The majority of patients he sees on a weekly basis are people who have fractures of the arm, leg, foot, ankle, wrist, elbow, hand, forearm and shoulder. If you want the skilled services of Dr. Lawson when you arrive in the ER, be sure and ask for him to be your orthopedic doctor. Dr. Lawson has provided service and sports medicine care in the Owasso, Tulsa, Broken Arrow, Claremore and Collinsville areas for the last several years. The doctor began his career in the U.S. Air Force, serving both as a general medical officer and as an orthopedic surgeon for 16 years. Providing Much Knee-ded Help to Central America Eastern Oklahoma Orthopedic Center surgeons provided free total joint replacements in a recent trip to El Salvador.

Two Eastern Oklahoma Orthopedic Center surgeons traveled to Santa Tecla, El Salvador in November to become a part of three surgical teams that operated for four-and-a-half days, performing 72 free, lifechanging hip and knee replacements to disabled individuals residing in the Central American country. Medical professionals who work in operating rooms with the surgeons on a daily basis complemented the 40-man team that included surgeons, internal medicine doctors, recovery room nurses, physical therapists and trained volunteers. Surgical procedures were provided at no cost to the recipients. Additional medical personnel from Oklahoma Surgical Hospital and Saint Francis Hospital also represented Tulsa on the trip. The surgical team included Dr. Rodney Plaster, Kara Starkman-Plaster, PA-C, and Dr. Sarat Kunapuli of Eastern Oklahoma Orthopedic Center, plus Utah orthopedic surgeon Dr. Aaron Hofmann of Operation Walk Utah. All time, equipment, materials and medications for the project were donated through the Opera-

tion Walk Utah organization. Operation Walk is a nonprofit, volunteer medical services organization dedicated to improving the lives of those suffering from painful and debilitating joint diseases who have no other treatment options. The group of surgeons assembled for this trip are

all “A-Team” rated. “We had specialists from across the United States who are regarded as the best in the field,” said Dr. Plaster. “We are the surgical specialists who frequently get referred for really tough procedures requiring total joint reconstruction on patients who have been handicapped by a

ment to take ownership of what they eat and how they live, and now they are enjoying life to the fullest. “The book is easy to understand and it makes sense,” says Dr. Mark. “And people can easily find a starting point in it. They can see themselves taking that first step and then carrying on.” The couple’s passion for health and wellness can also be seen on “Living It TV,” a 30-minute program broadcast every Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. on Cox Cable 3 and 1003 in Tulsa and Oklahoma City. They entertain and inspire as they share their knowledge, as well as their personal struggles and successes. “We are only human,” says Dr. Michele. “We are real people, and we want our viewers to know that even committed people like us can slip up.” They cover topics that affect everyone’s wellness, including weight loss without dieting, alternatives to common drugs, money management, relationships, spiritual growth, stress, fatigue and dealing with setbacks. “We want people to enjoy a life filled with more energy, strength, focus and peace,” adds Dr. Mark. “It’s a life you used to know and enjoy when you were younger.”

What Are You Doing With Your Life? Most New Year’s resolutions fail – but not this time.

By Deanna Rebro Mark Sherwood, ND, and Michele Neil, DO, are certain that patients who commit themselves to getting well and staying well will keep their New Year’s resolution. Why? Because they have seen it time and time again. It works! This husband-and-wife team is on a mission to help people improve every facet of their lives. And they are spreading the message through print, television and one-on one in their clinic, Functional Medical Institute. Dr. Michele says they have far more than a medical practice at FMI. “We have the premier lifestyle change clinic in the area,” she says. She does not believe in pushing pills or processes, or even treating symptoms, as most conventional medicine physicians would do. “We get to the root cause.” They start by carefully listening to each patient’s story and to his or her specific needs and goals. They take into consideration the interactions among genetic, environmental and lifestyle fac-

tors that can influence long-term health and chronic disease. They have what they call a “patient-centered approach,” which addresses the whole person, with physical, intellectual, emotional and spiritual aspects. From there, a highly individualized plan takes shape. Dr. Mark recalls one couple who recently came to the clinic. Jim and Carol Ann, both in their 50s, were severely overweight and overmedicated for numerous ailments. They had no energy and lived with aches and pains that they thought were expected with age. Yet, they were tired of this lifestyle and the way they felt every single day. After working with Drs. Mark and Michele for six months, they each lost 35 pounds and were no longer on medications. “When people are ready to change their lives, and understand why they are making these changes and then see the results, we have a lifetime commitment,” says Dr. Mark. The naturopathic doctor works with his wife to blend conventional medical techniques with natural healing and health maintenance.

The holidays are a special time of year for enjoying the good things in life like friends, family and maybe even a little overindulging in our favorite foods. Don’t let troublesome

Drs. Mark and Michele are thrilled with the success of their recently published book, “The Quest for Wellness.” The Amazon best seller has been embraced throughout the world. The book is filled with stories from people who have tried everything else and failed. They made the commit-

The 5 C’s Every Small Business Startup Needs to Know “Financially Fit” is a column published by RCB Bank to help you gain knowledge on all things financial. Fitness guides – RCB Bank professionals in the field – offer ideas to help you strengthen your money sense, customize savings training, and provide quick and easy action plans to start whipping your money into shape.

By David Goodwin, RCB Bank Lender Is 2016 the year you have resolved to start your own business? I suggest you get to know four people: a banker, a CPA, an insurance agent and an attorney. Building good relationships with these invaluable resources will help you and your business succeed. Now, let’s talk about applying for your business loan. It’s important to do your homework and prepare a solid business plan before you request a loan. A lender’s main concern is, are you going to be able to repay the loan? You need to be clear on how you plan to build and sustain your business. When deciding to loan you money, most lenders look at the five C’s. • Credit – Your credit report is a detailed list of your credit history and provides insight on how you manage credit and make payments. Lenders are looking to see if you pay back your creditors. • Capacity – Do you have the means to repay your loan? How much debt do you have compared

to how much you earn? Lenders want to know if you can comfortably manage your loan payments. • Character – Character is tough for a lender to assess in the brief time loans are considered. This is where a goodstanding relationship with a banker, who is likely to be your lender, is beneficial. They want to know if you are trustworthy – will you repay your loan? Lenders will review all available Phil and Betty Narotam, owners of Baskin Robbins in Owasso, celebrated the first anniversary of their store in December. information, such as credit reports and public records, to see if you’ve met past obligacompetition to see how your busi- considered very risky – what’s to tions or have a history of legal ness may fare. keep you from walking away in problems. • Capital – Do you have some hard times? Sequoyah from people who actually met with him include the following: Sequoyah carried a leather tobacco pouch and knife at his waist; the handle of his knife was rough hewn; he wore center seam moccasins and a calico shirt; he carried a walking stick, wore a turban, and was always smoking his pipe. Sequoyah walked with a limp, but no one knew for sure what had caused it, how long he had had the affliction, or which leg was affected. All of these documented details are included in Nunneley’s sculpture. J. David Nunneley’s beautiful and meaningful art is seen throughout Oklahoma and the Midwest, in other parts of the United States, and in Canada and Mexico. When you’re visiting the Rose District in Downtown Broken Arrow, stop by the J. David Nunneley Studio, located just east of Main on Dallas.

An Oklahoma Treasure Sculptor J. David Nunneley is known for his figurative, wildlife and military sculptures. By Duane Blankenship

Well-known Broken Arrow sculptor J. David Nunneley began his journey into the art world as an art student at the University of Oklahoma and the University of Tulsa. His first job was that of a professional illustrator for a scientific instrument company. Nunneley spent several years illustrating oil and gas field instruments prior to opening his own business. During his career, he started and sold two companies (an instrument controls company and a compressor company) and then served as vice president of R&D, a Tulsa-based instrument company where he was granted five U.S. patents for oil and gas related products. At age 65, after selling his company, Wellhead Compressors Inc., Nunneley retired from business and took advanced studies in figurative sculpture at the Scottsdale Academy of Art. He subsequently dedicated himself to becoming a full-time sculptor. “I know I am a better artist today,” says Nunneley,

“because of my varied life experiences.” In 2001, Nunneley submitted a bronze concept piece, “Pioneer Family,” for the Broken Arrow Arrow Centennial monument. This was his first major sculpture commission.Nunneley has received nearly 30 commissions for monuments since becoming a sculptor. Some of his works include three pieces at West Point Military Academy, works at Tulsa Municipal Airport, an eagle for the Indian Nations Boy Scouts of America, and Colonel Ernest Childers and Major Hank Miesner, Jr., both displayed at Broken Arrow’s Military Park. One of his most popular pieces is the U.S. Army Mule, Hannibal, with a cadet rider, located at the entrance of West Point Military Academy. Commissioned by Gilcrease Museum, his current monument-in-progress is that of Sequoyah, entitled “Greatest of His Race.” Nunneley says there is actually more that is not known about Sequoyah than is known about him.

Sculptor J. David Nunneley, with his current in-progress monument sculpture of Sequoyah, entitled “The Greatest of His Race.” The piece is commissioned by Gilcrease Museum and will reach its final destination at the museum sometime in late 2016.

Sequoyah has been recognized as the greatest of his tribe for his creation of the Cherokee Alphabet, or Syllabary, which

enabled the Cherokee people to communicate in writing and record their history. Some things known about

Handling the New Year Food Pressures – Success with Eats and Triggers for Treats Everyone has different food triggers. For some it is as simple as the thought of a doughnut that drives them to overeat, while others never think to eat. Some triggers may be associated with friends, family, certain places, moods, times of day and other environmental conditions. The holidays somehow wreak havoc on our ability to step away from the sweets. The following are a set of suggestions to help tame your triggers, manage weight issues, and maintain your healthy lifestyle during the holidays. Family triggers: -Oftentimes the holidays present us with the presence of people that trigger our weaknesses. Knowing who these people are can help you when you know they are going to be with you during the season of treats and habitual weakness. Try asking these people specifically if they will help you stay on track before the time comes.

They usually wish they had not eaten so much as soon as they push themselves away from the table. -If you look at another overeater and feel deprived, remember you are choosing better health. Obesity is toxic and health destroying. Additionally, the expenses of an unhealthy lifestyle will cost a fortune all told. You can be proud that you have taken control of your health, your quality of life, and your future finances. -If you usually take your break with your over eating buddies, take your break with individuals that have better food habits and understand a managed menu. -Take your break at different times, and if possible change the place where you are used to overeating. There is such a thing as “place association.”

-Don’t hesitate to ask individuals who offer you sweets and junk not to tempt you. Most overeaters understand what you are going through and will be happy to help you be successful. It may eventually be the key to their success as well. -Explore alternative ways to socialize with friends.

-Do a cross word puzzle or read a novel (“The Quest for Wellness” is ideal) during your break, if you have problems sitting without eating. -Run an errand or take a walk on your break instead of staying near the kitchen More people triggers: -For the first few weeks, avoid socializing in places where you know other people will be overeating. -If you have to be around others who overeat and you are tempted to do so, get up and take a break in the middle of your meal so that you can remind yourself to slow down. -Eating is not rush hour. Slow down your chewing rhythm. It takes 20 minutes for your brain to receive the message from the stomach that it is full. -Realize that overeaters are not having more fun just because they are eating.

Coverage for IInsurance Large Homes RCI Insurance Group offers custom insurance plans for the increasing number of homeowners with homes that are 3,000 square feet and larger. By Jim Butcher

In 2014, the median size new home set a record of 2,491 square feet, according to the American Enterprise Institute. Today’s generations are buying homes larger by a thousand square feet compared to the average new homes their parents purchased in 1973. Regardless of the size of

your current home, RCI Insurance Group, an independent insurance agency in Claremore, can write the coverage you need at a fair price. However, if you have a home that is larger than 3,000 square feet, you might want to hear what Amber Helmuth says. She is RCI’s personal lines risk manager and reminds local and area property owners that not all insurance providers are cre-

ated equal. She discusses problems found in “one size fits all” insurance coverage. RCI can build a robust yet simple plan to insure homes that exceed 3,000 square feet, Helmuth says. Here are just a few of the many advantages of RCI’s homeowners insurance with custom-built solutions for your large home: Guaranteed rebuilding costs. “One aspect of our program that most policies do not offer is guaranteed rebuilding costs. No matter how much it costs to rebuild your home the way it was, including such factors as labor and materials, it will be paid for,” says Amber. Several deductible options. The program offers deductibles of anywhere from $1,000 to $100,000, as well as options with lower wind and hail deductibles. “Most companies offer only 1% or higher deductibles for wind and hail,” says Amber. “We also have some options to waive deductibles on large losses, another unique aspect of our program.”

These are just a few of the many benefits of RCI’s large home insurance program. “We offer a broad range of enhancements that you can add to your policy to protect the unique aspects of your home and your family’s well-being.” Amber adds that RCI, by being an independent agency, can provide its customers ways to manage risk and prevent loss. “We are more than just insurance. We can help you reduce the chance of property damage, maximize safety, and ensure that the right amount of coverage is in place. We have programs that consider your assets as well as your lifestyle, such as special policies that are affordable and designed to cover private collections including guns, jewelry, wine collections and art.” RCI Insurance and its 18 employees want their customers to be happy. If a client is unhappy with rates, RCI staff can shop around with the goal to offer quality coverage at competitive rates. Giving back to the com-

munity is an important goal the insurance agency pursues with a passion. RCI agent Kyle Beggs serves on the boards of the Chamber of Commerce, Claremore School Foundation, RSU Alumni and is a member of the Rotary Club. Established in 1980, RCI is involved in many fundraisers and supports community organizations and charities including Safenet Services, Blue Star Mothers, Rogers State University, the William Barnes Children’s Advocacy Center, and John 3:16 Mission. You can go to RCI’s Facebook page, www.facebook. com/RCIinsurance, where you can “like” and help support worthy causes. “The more likes and shares we get, the more we donate,” says Helmuth. “We post our community events and involvement on our page, where we also run contests periodically.” In the past, RCI has given away trips to the Tulsa Zoo and gift cards on its Facebook page. The business not only makes a difference in the lives of its clients but in the world as well.

If you consider yourself a top notch soul food cook, you still have time to enter the CookOff. The 10th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Soul Food Cook-Off will take place at the Muskogee Civic Center, January 16, 2016. Chefs will prepare their delicious soul food cuisine for thousands of attendees to enjoy. “The Dr. Martin Luther King Soul Food Cook-Off is the perfect venue to celebrate the rich African American heritage of soul food,” says Cassandra Gaines, event creator and City of Muskogee Diversity and Community Liaison. “Soul food is simply comfort food made from scratch – sweet potato pie, smothered chicken and rice, smothered pork chops, homemade macaroni and cheese, greens, hot water corn bread, candied yams, peach cobbler. We bring together a diverse community of people who enjoy the tradition of enjoying good food together and having fun.” One of Cassandra’s responsibilities as marketing director of the Civic Center is to host multicultural community

It’s a fair game for everyone,” Cassandra says. “There is also a people’s choice award so those who attend can vote for their favorite dish.” If you’re not the best cook but love some good soul food, admission to the event is $8, and includes all the delicious food you can handle. “This family-friendly event is guaranteed to produce fond memories and plenty of full stomachs,” says Cassandra. The Dr. Martin Luther King Soul Food Cook-Off will be held Saturday, January 16 at the Muskogee Civic Center, located at 425 Boston Street. The afternoon features great food, fun, cash prizes and an educational component regarding the history of soul food and cooking tips from some of the country’s top chefs. unlimited tanning, the customer can upgrade to a spray tan.” The Versa Spa system, according to Megan, is for those who want instant color in a single session. “It’s for last-minute people who don’t have time to tan or want to be UV free. For example, if a person has a party or event to attend and they want to be tan, but they just don’t have the time to lie in a tanning bed. It’s also great for those who can’t lie in a tanning bed.” Megan adds that spray tanning is also safe for pregnant women and pageant kids.

The Versa Spa system is a fullbody treatment system that allows the customer to select from a combination of solutions that will bronze and smooth the skin. The system doesn’t just tint the skin, but creates a complete spa-like session that results in a healthy, natural look. “Those who choose the Versa Spa system only have to wait four hours to see the results,” she says. “It does not rub off either; it gradually fades over a 7 to 10 day period.” Employees at Touch of Sun are well educated. “Our employees are

trained to know about the equipment and how skin tans. They are required to take a test to become Smart Tan certified,” says Megan. “We also maintain a very clean facility. That is important to us.” Touch of Sun carries a wide assortment of tanning lotions. With an active tanning package, customers receive a discount on all lotions. The multi-level tanning salon is located in the Fairway Market in Owasso at 9540 N. Garnett Road. It is open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m.

There are barbell classes, Zumba, metabolic training, high intensity interval training (Tabata), Sculpt, kickboxing, PiYo, and Yogalates, just to name a few of the offerings. Classes are held seven days a week. An additional and popular option is Boot Camp with Melinda Young, held at 5:30 a.m. and 4:15 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays and at 8 a.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Starting in January, a new Boot Camp for ages 10-17 only, taught by Lara Myers, will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4 to 4:55 p.m. For those who want one-on-one assistance to reach their fitness goals, eight nationally certified personal trainers are available. In February, a new weight loss challenge will launch. Back by popular demand, the program that began two years ago ended with more than 40 successful participants losing anywhere from 7 to 35 pounds each. “It’s not just the gym and the classes,” says Adana. “We are surrounded by the best staff and the best instructors anyone could ask for.” Everyone who comes through the door is greeted with a smile, she explains. They make it a point to learn names and make the ladies feel welcome. And then there are the members. “Without these wonderful ladies, we would not have a business,” she adds. “Like I said, we are truly blessed.” Ladies heard about the fitness center through friends or co-workers. They enrolled to get a strong, healthy body. But they found so much more. “We have such a friendly, nurturing atmosphere,” she says. To many ladies, Fit For Her is like home away from home. To mark the 11th year anniversary on March 3, Fit For Her is holding a prize drawing. The grand prize is $500. Second and third prize winners will receive six months and three months free membership. From now until March 3, any lady who visits for the first time and takes a no-obligation tour is entered in the drawing. Existing members can bring a guest and both their names will be entered. The first 50 new members will receive a free limited edition T-shirt. Use of the gym, classes and tanning are all included in one low monthly fee. There are no additional annual fees and no contracts

continued from page 1 both Jim Glover Chevrolet and Nissan. Jim Glover Fixed Operations Manager Chuck Zachariae says, “Our whole group is excited about having the great Glover name behind us. With the Jim Glover auto family you get the whole nine yards of experience and know-how, helping to ensure the new operation’s success.” Additionally, Zachariae advised that the new dealership is excited to already be growing, with the addition of a new commercial department to serve the Tulsa area. Chuck is a Tulsa native with 20 years in the automotive industry and roots going back to his grandfather’s Texaco service station on Peoria in Brookside. Jim Glover’s first auto dealership was with Nissan. He successfully migrated over the years to Chevrolet. Jim Glover Nissan has attained approval as a Nissan GT-R dealership. “The GT-R is the fastest production model on the road, delivering an earth-shaking 545 horsepower rating,” says Zachariae. “The 2016 model includes a new recalibrated suspension for a smoother, sophisticated ride, plus an all-new interior option with hand-stitched detailing.” And there are lots of other power and performance options to be had on your GT-R. The Jim Glover Nissan service department provides service and maintenance on all types of vehicles, not just Nissan, and whenever you come in for service, your vehicle will receive a multi-point inspection at no charge. They also provide an Express Service area where “no-wait” oil changes are performed. Just drive in – there’s no need to

make an appointment. And when it’s time for your car to receive additional recommended maintenance or service, you’ll be reminded by postcard or email. “Our service and parts departments also carry a great inventory of all major tire brands,” says Zachariae. “If we don’t have the specific tire you require, we can get it for you. All our technicians and advisors in service and parts are Nissan Certified, and we have a Nissan Certified Master Technician.” You’ll also find batteries and dozens of other accessory products to improve vehicle performance or just dress things up a bit. When you bring your vehicle in for service you’ll be greeted on the drive by the familiar faces of Chuck Zachariae and Service Advisors Steven Benike, Jeff Been, Richard Villegas and Paul Frailey. Stop in at Jim Glover Nissan and check it out. They think you’ll like what you see and what they have to offer.

Tax Time Is Approaching Breathe easy, as changes for filing 2015 tax returns are minor in comparison to 2014.

By Jim Butcher Tax time is approaching, but you can breathe easy. Changes to filing your 2015 tax return should be minor in relation to 2014’s regulations. Bob Brun, franchise owner of H&R Block in Owasso and Claremore and certified public accountant, explains that the expansion of 2015 reporting requirements is primarily due to changes in the Affordable Care Act (ACA), commonly known as “Obamacare.” “Additional mandates will require more people to include information about the health care insurance they carried for

themselves and their families,” he adds. Last year, only those individuals who acquired health insurance through the federal or state market places received a Form 1095-A. It was necessary for them to reconcile their adjusted household income to the amounts identified on this form. This year, in addition to the market place insured participants, individuals covered by employer qualified health care plans or individuals who acquire their health care insurance plans from a private health care insurer will receive a Form 1095-B or a 1095-C, respectively. “If you receive any of the

1095 Forms, A, B, or C, it is an IRS requirement for filing your 2015 return,” says Bob. “Those who did not obtain health care insurance during 2015 will be required to file a return to demonstrate if they may qualify for any of the available hardship or statutory exemptions. The number of exemptions available in 2015 has increased over those in 2014.” The 2015 penalty for not having health care insurance for any member of the household has significantly increased over the 2014 penalty amounts. The ACA regulations identify the 2015 penalty as “the greater of 2 percent of the modified household income or the sum of $325 for each adult and $162.50 for each dependent claimed on the return. In 2016, this penalty will increase from 2 to 3 percent of modified adjusted household income and from $325 to $650 per adult and from $162.50 to $325 per child.” For those individuals who received a form 1095-A and either failed to include it as part of their tax return or failed to file a tax return, the IRS is issuing non-compliance letters. Another issue, as reported by the IRS, is the significant increase in Taxpayer Identity Theft. This problem relates to the fraudulent preparation and filing of income tax returns by individuals using another taxpayer’s name and social security number, and possibly that of their dependents, to claim a refund for that year prior to the real taxpayer filing their own return. This impairs the true taxpayer in filing their return and additional steps are required. It

(Back row, L to R): Don Capps, Marilyn Davis, Bob Brun, franchise owner, Henry Harrison, Robert Capps, Jerry Carrier, (Front row) Wilma Benefield, Mary Kranig, Pam Clark, Pam Ziriax and Dawn Lund. could delay the processing of the return and refund. Tax Identity Theft is not covered by regular tax identity protection services in that they cannot monitor IRS tax filings. In 2014, H&R Block started a program to assist taxpayers who have been victimized by Taxpayer Identity Theft. H&R Block, along with other tax preparation providers, the IRS and state taxing authorities, have been developing methods to combat this crime. This year the IRS and state tax commissions will be including various methods of challenging expected returns before releasing the claimed refunds. H&R Block’s business philosophy is to insure that the taxpayer receives the maximum refund possible or minimize the amount of tax due in accordance with U.S. and State Tax Codes.

Bob Brun owns and operates the Claremore office of H&R Block, and in partnership with Pat Etzkorn, owns and operates the Owasso franchise. The Owasso and Claremore offices of H&R Block are open year-round, with services available by appointment, walk-ins or drop-offs.
