FINANCIALLY FIT Are You Financially Prepared to Live A Long Life? By Jocelyn Wood By the year 2040, it is projected that 14.6 million Americans will live to 85 years old or older. This is triple in population from 6.5 million in 2014, according to the Administration of Aging. Are you prepared financially to live longer? If you’re age 20 or older, retirement planning should be one of your top priorities. Not sure where to begin? I asked Nate Haberman, AAMS® Financial Advisor at RCB Wealth Management to share a few tips. FIGURE OUT YOUR RETIREMENT INCOME NEEDS. Use your current expenses as a starting point. Don’t forget to factor in items like travel,
10 10 || Values Values DECEMBER DECEMBER 2016 2016
new vehicles and healthcare expenses. “A financial plan does not have to be complicated,” Haberman said. “Its purpose is to help you get from where you are to where you want to go, as well as improve the odds that you won’t outlive your money in retirement.” INVEST IN YOUR EMPLOYER-SPONSORED RETIREMENT PLAN OR AN INDIVIDUAL RETIREMENT ACCOUNT. START NOW. “It can be hard to plan for retirement when you are living paycheck to paycheck,” said Haberman. “But, a small amount is better than no amount. Setting aside a little bit each month will add up in
the long run, especially if your employer matches a percentage of your contributions.” BUILD AN EMERGENCY FUND. Prepare for the unexpected and avoid tapping into your retirement savings. “At one time or another, an expense will come up that you didn’t plan for - car repair or hospital visit,” said Haberman. “An emergency fund is there to help manage the financial risks of unforeseen expenses and potentially lessen some stress. Plus, early withdrawals from retirement accounts often have tax penalties assessed to them.” REVISE YOUR PLAN ALONG THE WAY. Life happens. Plan, prepare,
review and adjust regularly in order to stay on track of your goals. “A professional advisor can assist you through realistic expectations in your planning, while taking into consideration items like the age you plan to retire, inflation and taxes,” said Haberman. “A professional can walk you through all the available tools so you can better understand your options.” While having a plan doesn’t guarantee a successful retirement, it may help you alleviate possible hardships, and allow you to live the life you want during your golden years. THE DIESEL EXPERT By Erica Ludwig Service Director Mike Fitzpatrick is proud to reintroduce their Diesel technician. Lloyd Hensley has returned to the service team of Classic Chevrolet as their Diesel Technician after a brief period of time away. “We’re very excited to welcome Lloyd back to the Classic Chevrolet family,” said Mike Fitzpatrick. “He’s one of the best diesel technicians we’ve seen and having him back on our team only adds to our standard of excellence.” Lloyd started working as a mechanic at age 15 and has been working in General Motors dealerships since age 19. He is a certified Duramax Diesel Expert, having worked on the Duramax diesel engine since its inception in 2000. Lloyd is also an ASE Master Certified Technician. “I aim to stay 100% trained in all General Motors training standards for Classic Chevrolet,”
said Lloyd. “If I’m not doing my part, than that doesn’t project the right idea to the rest of the team.” Classic Chevrolet takes their training seriously. The company constantly strives to have all the recommended diagnostic equipment and repair tools for the Duramax Diesel so you can rest assured your diesel gets fixed right the first time. “Our staff is always way over GM training standards,” adds Mike. “We’re usually over 300% trained, which means Classic Chevrolet provides training opportunities to our personnel well over required or expected levels. Not only do we have the latest and greatest state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment, but our technicians are highly skilled at using it.” In addition to the routine services provided by an automotive service department, Classic also provides products and services
including tires, oil changes, trim, electrical, AC and heating system, engine repair and replacement, brake service, heavy line engine and diesel repair on GM products. The Duramax was a vast improvement over GM’s previous indirect-injection diesel, and Chevy beat two major competitors to the punch with its 2001 model year introduction. Mike says his team is part of a nationwide network of diesel technicians who report new repair problems whenever they are encountered. Anyone in the network experiencing a diesel repair issue finds reassurance knowing that other diesel experts have probably encountered and reported the same problem, plus their recommendations on making the repair. The service team at Classic Chevrolet in Owasso wishes you and yours a happy and safe holiday. When your car, truck or diesel needs repair or service, be sure to see Mike and his staff of qualified advisors and technicians. They are willing and able to quickly get you back on the road. Lloyd Hensley and Mike Fitzpatrick strive to bring excellence to the service department for their customers.
“Outdoor Creations really helped us out in our time of need after we received storm damage to our roof, window, and interior of our house. It was great dealing with one contractor that could do all of the work. They went over and above making sure we were happy along each step of the process. I was a little hesitant to hire a company not located in my city, but Jake and his crew were always here when they said they would be. - S. Sprague

Celebrate the best of family holiday traditions at The Castle of Muskogee. Take a leisurely drive through the Castleton Village, which is filled with thousands of holiday lights and displays. The drive through is free, and donations are gratefully accepted. Outside The Castle, you can take a hayride, hop aboard the Castle Train, or ride the ponies through the Village area. Go in the Castle Cafe for a light supper or snack, hot chocolate and treats, and great company! Sit and enjoy complimentary holiday movies for the whole family. “We’ve set everything up for families to have some down time,” said Jeffrey Hiller, Castle of Muskogee Owner. “We all tend to get lost in the Christmas rush, so our goal is for the families to spend some quality time together. The results we’ve
seen have been incredible.” In nearby Honor Heights Park, the “Garden of Lights” attracts thousands of visitors. The celebration includes a free drive-through display of over a million shimmering lights exhibited throughout the park. Internationally known for its Azalea Festival, Honor Heights Park draws up to a half million annual visitors to its scenic hilltop drive, which encompasses nearly 30,000 azalea bushes and thousands of trees. Christmas lights are placed on trees, bushes and structures throughout the park to enhance the natural beauty of the gardens, waterfalls and ponds. Gates open at 6:00pm nightly, and the event is free. Drive through the lights at both locations - free admission, donations accepted. Q & A with Financial Advisor Linda Rainwater Q:
Do you have tips to help with gift-giving? I forgot to set aside money for Christmas! - Stressed Out Sheila
A:
Sheila, gift giving is frequently an expense that is overlooked when planning a budget. Many folks wait until the last minute and feel pressured to overspend, going into debt to celebrate the holidays. This puts too much stress on an occasion that could be an enjoyable celebration with friends and family. One approach is planning your gift giving in advance, by writing each occasion on a calendar and looking year-round for appropriate gifts for birthdays, holidays, and special occasions. Another approach is to schedule an annual trip to a nearby location where you can purchase items that are not available in your home town. You can prepare a list and purchase gifts for the upcoming holidays and birthdays all at once. I have done this many times and recommend waiting until the occasion to wrap the gifts, having learned this one the hard way! Most of the time we put too much of a burden on ourselves to purchase a gift that is soon forgotten. Do you remember what gifts you received last year? Enjoy the Christmas holidays, keeping in mind that the most memorable gifts are personal and frequently inexpensive. One of my most precious gifts is a card from my Mom saying that she is proud of me. Your holiday stress can be reduced and your gift-giving skills improved by choosing a strategy that is personal and intentional. Have Merry Christmas! By Kristi Roe-Owen Little minions are drafting letters to Santa to put legal contracts to shame while you begin checking off your family’s holiday bucket list, and like most Americans, high atop that list is the holiday light tour. We’ve put together a handy little guide to help you make the most of your Christmas light splendor. Rudolph cosplay is optional. Begin with CHANDLER PARK’S LIGHTS ON THE HILL at 6500 W. 21st St. The park has several lovely levels for driving through and offers a fantastic view of the city in some spots. Next, Downtown Tulsa will be lit once more in breathtaking cool purples and blues for GLOW DOWNTOWN. Drive or walk through the Blue

Dome District, Deco District, Greenwood District, Guthrie Green, East Village and Arvest Winterfest at the BOK Center. UTICA SQUARE at 21st and Utica has been a holiday staple for as long as many Tulsans can remember, boasting 700,00 lights, 175 lit trees, a satellite office for Santa, and those charming little animatronic Nutcracker vignettes. While you’re in the area, take a drive around SWAN LAKE on the west side of 17th and Utica. Follow the loop around this charming pond or park and walk. Afterwards, drive past the PHILBROOK MUSEUM, which will be aglow for its Festival of Trees, and drive through the adjacent neighborhood Terwilleger Heights, where some of Tulsa’s grandest homes reside.
Drive southeast to 4142 S. Sandusky Avenue, where SHERRY AND ALLEN TYLER’S HOUSE offers a light show synced to holiday music you can check out by tuning into 107.1 FM on your radio. From there, head south to LAFORTUNE PARK PLAZA, with a special trip down 58th street at about the 6100 block. No self-respecting Tulsan would make it through the holidays without a stop by RHEMA BIBLE CHURCH at 1025 W. Kenosha in Broken Arrow with its magical display of more than 2 million lights. While you’re in BA, don’t miss the BASS PRO lights at 101 Bass Pro Drive and BATTLE CREEK off of Highway 51 and Aspen, where you will find several charming displays. Stop off for a breather at the beautifully lit ROSE DISTRICT
(100 S. Main), because after two hours in the car with your kids, you may need something a bit stronger than that cocoa. For Griswold-level holiday magic, a short drive to SCOTT AND LISA SMITH’S HOUSE AT 26685 DUCK POND LANE in Claremore is worth the mileage. This retro display employs those oldschool ceramic bulbs many a dad used to curse over from the rooftop every November, handmade Christmas cutouts, and all manner of splendiferous holiday gems. We would love to hear from you. What amazing spots did we miss? Send us an email to editor@valuenews.com and let us know what we need to include for next year’s guide... and don’t forget to include some glorious family light pics for our edification.

Though Christmas is over, there is still more celebrating to be done. Glitzier threads replace tacky reindeer sweaters as the world gets ready for Auld Lang Syne. Love it or leave it, there is no denying that 2016 was one heckuva year and deserves to go out with a big, festive bang. DRYSDALES CENTER SPREAD
By Jillian Moore The tree is trimmed, the lights are up, and the stockings are hung on the mantel. Christmas brings many joys, but gift shopping is not always one of them. You’ve fought the lines on Black Friday and searched every store in the mall, but somehow still have a few names on your holiday gift list. So, where else can shoppers go to check off not just one name, but all of them? “We’re not everything to everybody, but we have something for everybody,” Jim McClure, owner of Drysdales Western Wear said. Jim has owned two Tulsa Drysdales locations for 35 years, and knows there are treasures to be found in every corner of his stores. From casual and traditional western apparel to unique home goods and children’s toys, you’ll find the perfect gift for every loved one at Drysdales during this holiday season. “One thing I’ve always said is Drysdales is a one-stop-shop,” said Leigh Ann Offield, Senior Ladies Buyer at Drysdales. “They can get an array of gifts for the whole family.” Going to a store with so many options can be a little overwhelming, however, so where do you begin? At the boots, of course.
“Nowhere else do you see this many boots, so psychologically you know what you want is here, you just have to look for it,” Jim explains. “It’s not like going in a store where they only have four pairs.” When Jim says you’ll see a lot of boots, he means it. With more than forty thousand pairs, Drysdales offers customers seemingly endless options for style, size and color. Drysdales has all the best selling brands like Justin, Tony Lama, Ariat, Lucchese, Twisted X, Dan Post, Anderson Bean and more. If you’re looking past traditional western boots, you can visit the extensive selection of both steel and non-steel toed work boots, as well as fire resistant footwear. The choices don’t stop there because Drysdales has plenty of boots for the youngsters on your list starting at just $29.99. Once you’ve found the perfect pair, it’s time to head over to the rows of children’s toys and collectibles. From cozy plush stuffed animals to Breyer Horses, you’ll find more than enough to fill space underneath the tree. “Because we’re one of the largest Breyer dealers, we get the exclusives and people will come in and buy five at a time, just because they’re limited editions,” Leigh Ann said. Drysdales also has the best selection for the Trail of Painted Ponies collector’s line. The collection comes out with Christmas additions, ornaments and new models every year. Of course, when you think of western wear, you think of denim. There isn’t a fit or style you won’t be able to find, with more than one-hundred thousand pairs of jeans to pick from. According to Jim, he tells shoppers, “If you need denim, come and get ‘em.” Drysdales has everything from Levi’s and Wrangler to Big Star and Miss Me brands. When looking for more clothing options, you can find brands like Under Armour, Carhartt and other popular lines of leisure and workwear. For a store as large as Drysdales, gift options are nearly endless. Choose among leather handbags, handmade Indian jewelry, and both western and traditional hats, just to name a few. Drysdales also has specialty items for conceal and carry, such as jackets, holsters and purses. But, you’re not out of choices yet. From dinnerware and copper statues to Pendleton blankets and bedding, you can find an item to spruce up any room in the house. When your Christmas shopping is complete, you’ll need festive wrapping before stacking your loot under the tree. Shoppers can use a variety of patterns and colors to personalize gift wrapping sets that include a bag and tissue paper. You can also shop for items online and pick them up at either Drysdales location on 32nd and Memorial or 71st and Highway 169. The friendly staff at Drysdales invites you to come and see the array of products and services they offer for all your holiday gift-giving needs. By Erica Ludwig Throughout history, stars have served as a symbol of hope. From shepherds in the field, to the ancient Greeks, to even Peter Pan finding his way back to Neverland, stars have always been there to offer comfort and light to those who need it. Tulsa’s rising star, Brian Nhira, captured the hearts of millions with his rendition of “Jesus Loves Me” on the 10th season of NBC’s Emmy awarding winning show, “The Voice”. With a contagious laugh, infectious smile and electric personality, it’s no question why he’s been recognized by notable names like Pharrell Williams and Adam Levine. Brian started singing in churches at just age four. By the time he reached high school, he had fallen in love with music, participating in show choir and musicals like “All Shook Up”. The Jenks graduate continued using his gift through college, where he was involved with ORU Live and singing for local churches. Tulsans watched the rest of America fall in love with Brian during his time on “The Voice” in the spring of 2016. When reflecting on his experience on the show, Brian is nothing but thankful. “It’s been a dream come Values JANUARY DECEMBER 2016 ? 30| | VALUES 2017
true,” said Brian. “’The Voice’ was really my introduction to America, my introduction to this music industry, and everyone has to have one of those. It’s amazing to have the opportunity to be in the position that I’m in right now, to be building the way that we are. “ Since his time on the show, Brian has signed with Abrams Artist Agency in New York, looking to gain further experience in acting. Though his travels take him to the east and west coasts, the 24 year old looks forward to another Christmas in Tulsa, where he will be hosting his own, recently sold-out, Christmas concert at the Tulsa PAC. Patrons can expect the feelings of a winter wonderland at the Liddy Doenges Theatre. “This concert will feature a collection of the most popular pop Christmas tunes as well as some of the classics performed by ‘Voice’ alumni Brian Nhira (Season 10), Alaska and Madi (Season 6), Kristen Marie (Season 10), Chelsea Gann (Season 10), Malik Heard
(Season 10), and local talent Jesse Graver; in addition to Brian Nhira’s live band,” said Jasper Nhira, business director for Brian Nhira music. Part of the proceeds from this concert will go toward the collection of backpacks and school supplies for grade school children in Zimbabwe, Africa. Due to the first show being sold out, Brian has added a second show from 9-10:30 p.m. Ticket prices are $20 reserved seating and $25 for floor seating. Tickets can be purchased at the Tulsa PAC website. Come walk in a winter wonderland this Christmas with Brian Nhira and friends from ‘The Voice.”

INSTRUCTIONS By Kristi Roe-Owen Ah, parent life. It’s Friday night again and the kids are hungry, which you know with absolute certainty by the way they are bouncing up and down like spastic popcorn begging for pizza for the third time this week. The mere thought of kicking off those power flats (or power loafers, fellas) only to take up residence in the kitchen laboring over a meal is cringeworthy. If only there were a place where an easy meal for the family and a lovely glass of merlot won’t require a second mortgage. Fret not, friends. Tulsa abounds with free and affordable meal options for dinner out with the offspring. This handy guide should help you achieve parental winning without breaking the bank. For more information about these offers, check your local restaurants.

CHOICES FOR LIFE SEEKS
FOSTER PARENTS • Must be able to cook just enough for kids. • Do things that your kid enjoys. • Drop them off at a park with husband or wife while running errands. • Must keep child clothed and fed. • Keep them busy. • Keep them in touch with case worker. • Feed their bad habits with kindness and good. • Help them learn the good habits of life.
Hopefully the child that you are fostering will go home. In response to a school assignment to write an ad, a 10-year-old girl answers the question through the eyes of a foster child who was recently adopted.

Leslie Yocham, agency training and recruiting supervisor at Choices for Life Foster Care, is often asked what it takes to become a therapeutic foster parent. In response to a school assignment to write an ad, a 10-year-old girl answers the question through the eyes of a foster child who was recently adopted. Through the eyes of a professional, Leslie adds, “patience, understanding and the willingness to ask for help to do what is best for a child in need.” Foster parents from all walks of life have answered the call and experienced some of the most difficult, yet rewarding, challenges in their lives. Choices for Life, with offices in Sapulpa, Ponca City, Checotah and Oklahoma City, focuses on children with a higher level of emotional and behavioral issues. Statewide, there are more than 130 children ranging from 4 to 17—many of them native Americans-- awaiting therapeutic foster care. All come with their own adversities through no fault of their own. Their issues range from extreme neglect to verbal and sexual abuse. Their special needs require special care that is not available through traditional foster channels. “Most of these kids have had unique and traumatic experiences far beyond their years,” says Leslie. “Imagine the feeling of a kid being picked up at school by state workers. The parents have been arrested. The child does not have a chance to say good-by to anyone, leaving school with strangers and only the clothes on his or her back.” The sooner they are placed in therapeutic foster care, the sooner they can start rebuilding their lives. Each child is carefully evaluated and then matched with a strong and stable foster family who will nurture the child to heal, grow CHOICES FOR LIFE 724 S. TAKING CHANCES By Tanya Andrews The trickledown effect of state budget cuts have reached two state museums in Claremore; the Will Rogers Memorial Museum and the JM Davis Arms & Historical Museum. The JM Davis suffered a cut of more than $55,000 for this fiscal year, on an already lean budget. “A budget cut of that magnitude is crippling to the JM Davis Museum, which is a revenue generator for the state of Oklahoma”, said Tanya Andrews, Director of Visit Claremore. “As a tourism partner, a Claremore jewel and a world-class museum, it is vital that citizens help if possible.” A community wide effort to help the museum raise dollars is through a raffle for a chance to win one year of free electricity. Chances are $25 each or 5 chances for $100. Winnings are up to $3,000 in electricity for Claremore utility customers. Rules for the contest include

the winner must be a singlemeter residential user of the City of Claremore Electric, or the winnings can be transferred one time to a user of their choice. Not eligible to win are employees and Commissioners of the J.M. Davis Museum, Officers of the Friends of the J.M. Davis Museum, and employees of the City of Claremore. Raffle tickets are available at any Claremore location of BancFirst and RCB Bank. Limited operating dollars has caused the museum to change their hours to 10 am to 5 pm and they are now closed on Sundays and Mondays. “This limits our visitors’ opportunity to enjoy this treasure, but it is necessary to keep the doors open”, said McCombs. “We are hopeful
that the state’s budget crisis improves but for now we have no alternative but to limit museum hours and focus on fundraising efforts”. The winning raffle ticket will be drawn on December 31 during the City of Claremore’s Rockin’ New Year’s Eve Bash. “This year’s celebration will be held at the West Bend Green at the Claremore Expo Center”, said Andrews. “What a great way to ring in the new year by celebrating with our community and possibly winning a year’s worth of electricity! Both are
cause for a great celebration”. “The Rockin’ New Year’s Eve will begin at 6pm with a Fireworks Show to start at 9:30pm.
