Keep their Future Clear Dr. Hart’s Primary Eye Care offers routine eye exams and a variety of styles for back-to-school. By Lorrie Ward For Shelley Hayes, it was not hard to figure out that her daughter had challenges with vision. From a young age, she showed the telltale signs of poor eyesight—squinting while focusing, holding things closely while reading, having trouble concentrating and completing tasks, etc. Shelley had her daughter’s eyes examined and was not surprised to find that her child needed glasses. However when it came to Shelley’s son, the diagnosis was not so easy. He showed none of the signs her daughter had exhibited and seemed to have normal vision. But some of his friends were wearing glasses and he thought they were “cool,” so he asked his mother if he

could get a pair when his sister did. While Shelley had him at the optometrist, she had his vision tested and was shocked to find that the young man actually needed glasses as badly as his sister did. “I thought he just wanted glasses to be like his friends,” she recalls. “He showed none of the obvious indicators of poor vision.” That’s why, as the office manager of Dr. Hart’s Primary Eye Care in Collinsville, Shelley encourages parents to have their children’s eyes routinely examined. “If a person is born with bad vision, they may have no idea until they have an examination,” she says. “It is like watching regular tel(continued on page 22)

Have You Joined the Sisterhood? Twisted Soul Sisters Boutique offers fashion, friendship and fun. By Kristi Roe-Owen When Kelly Corey and friend Marti Coleman founded Twisted Soul Sisters Boutique six years ago, their vision was to offer women a place to shop for unique, fun clothing and accessories with the philosophy of friendship at the core. The store began as trunk shows featuring unique clothing and repurposed old jewelry in the homes of Kelly’s friends, some of whom now work in the boutique. The Twisted Soul Sisters team remains a group of real life friends from Bixby. “We started off as a group of friends having fun,” Kelly emphasized. Kelly and friends would take older pieces of jewelry and turn them into unique new creations for these events. A leather belt might become a one-of-a-kind leather cuff bracelet; a grandmother’s ring may find new life as a statement necklace. When the trunk shows proved a hit, this sisterhood moved into a smallish space in Persimmon Hollow, the 1880s village replica known for housing a number of dreamy vintage and artisan vendors. Soon after, the store moved again to their first full-sized storefront, eventually settling into their current location to house their garden of sparkly delights.

ASK THE MONEY MAVEN STRAIGHT-FORWARD, NO-NONSENSE TALK ABOUT YOUR MONEY

How Do You Teach Kids About Money? BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT As a business owner and a parent, I can’t tell you enough how important it is to teach your children about money. Schools are burdened with far too many requirements these days. However, personal finance is a topic that is often overlooked in the curriculum. Children are capable of learning money skills from a very early age. The following are some guidelines of skills you can teach them at different stages. Five and Under Begin by letting your little ones help out with simple chores around the house. They can help pick up toys, carry their plate to the sink, help take care of family pets, and help set the table. Children intrinsically love to “help” at this age, which is a blessing. However, you might consider letting them earn a few cents for doing “extra chores” in order to send the message that work=earning money. I remember that my five year old loved to organize my Tupperware cabinet for “extra money.” Not only did this help develop his problem solving skills, but also gave him a sense of how valuable it was to earn money. Children at the latter part of this stage are also capable of learning to count and recognize different denominations of coins and dollar bills. Six to Ten This is a great stage to continue building the “learn to earn” muscle. Allow your kids lots of opportunities to make extra money by doing extra chores. We always had “family chores” that everyone had to do just because that’s part of being a family and “extra chores” that they could choose to make money to buy things that they wanted. In addition, it’s a great time to teach a child the difference between “a want” and “a need.” Needs are the very basics. Food to eat, clothes to wear, and a roof over their head are needs. The newest Nike shoes and Apple iPhone 6 are wants. Don’t let them get too big for their britches. Help them learn to differentiate between the two. (As a side note….this is a lesson I’ve noticed a lot of adults have difficulty with, as well) Eleven to Seventeen By this developmental stage, there are

multiple skills to be mastered. Teach your child how to write a check, how to balance a check ledger, how to create a budget, and how to prioritize wants and needs. Require them to assist you in paying bills and entering your expenses in Quickbooks. Be a good role model. Help them to look for ways to earn money outside of the household (weeding neighbors flower beds, mowing lawns, walking dogs, working at McDonalds or Snow cone huts, or babysitting). Encourage saving/investing 30% of everything they make. Visit your local bank and open a savings account with them. If you have a financial advisor, encourage them to attend your appointment with you to learn about investing. Allow them to spend money on items they “want” so they understand how it feels to be able to purchase something with money they have earned. Lastly, help them to value helping others and giving 10% of what they earn. You must be an active participant in teaching your children about money. Teaching them to be responsible in their earning, spending and saving will help them become successful adults. Fall Fair Fun For All

The Rogers County Fair offers a variety of activities and competitions coming this September.

By Kristi Roe-Owen When the nights turn cooler and the air a little crisper, Oklahomans anxiously await autumn decadences such as oversized sweaters, pumpkin spice everything, and holding hands on the midway at the local fair. The Rogers County Fair, established in 1914, is the perfect place to add to your fall bucket list. With its emphasis on traditional arts and agriculture, the event to be held September 15-18 at the Claremore Expo Center is everything a country fair should be. If the thought of attending an annual fair calls to mind only vertigo-inducing thrill rides, parking lot anxiety, endless booths of mass-produced buyer’s remorse, and regrettable overindulgence, you’ve been missing out on all the goodness of a smaller county fair. While the fair is the largest of its kind in the region, it offers a slowerpaced, more traditional fair experience. The fair is home to a less crowded midway, family events and a focus on local food, agriculture, and artisanship. It is also very affordable, with no

parking or admission fees. Lisa Rogers, Marketing Manager for the Rogers County Fair, explained that the fair presents an opportunity to experience the importance of agriculture firsthand. Visitors will have the chance to connect with food in a way they may not be otherwise able to. Rogers noted that many people never have the opportunity to experience the relationship between farm and table. Children raised in the city are able to see firsthand the animals that produce their food and experience garden vegetables in new ways. “What better place for children to experience farm animals than at a county fair?” Rogers mused. Dairy and beef cows, goats, sheep, chickens, rabbits, horses and pigs are among the barnyard friends to make acquaintance with. Foodies will appreciate the fair’s many culinary offerings. Among some of the can’t-miss items are gourmet egg rolls and street tacos, the fish tacos being a local favorite. The fair offers a venue for experiencing and sharing traditional arts. “Younger generations are

seeing a renewed interest in traditional arts and artisanship,” Rogers explained, citing a resurgence in the creation of jams and jellies. “Many people are canning vegetables grown in their own garden or picked up at a local farmer’s market.” Breadmaking, relishes, salsas, and cakes are among the many food competitions. Local artisans can submit their creations for competition, a tradition dating back to the early days of the county fair. Craft-lovers will swoon over the open class home economics competitions, where Rogers says the crafts and sewing projects residing there are like a “living Pinterest board.” 4H, FFA, local schools, stay-at-home-moms and other residents of Rogers County compete for the coveted county fair ribbons. Some of the more pin-worthy categories include scrapbooking, leather craft, recycled furniture, jewelry, and tablescaping. For anyone with an alternative couture obsession or a super secret cherry pie recipe, all of the fair’s competitions are open to any Rogers County resident. To enter, simply pack up that prized jam and bring it to the Claremore Expo Center

on Tuesday, September 13th from 2-7 p.m. Other competitive areas include archery, a dog show, fine art, and even floral arrangement. Of course, what would a fair be without shopping? with only weeks to go, it is time for potential participants to gear up for various competitions. The largest and most publicized competition will be the Mid-America Regional Chili Cook-Off. There is a monetary prize for the winner, but according to Dell Davis, president and CEO of Claremore Chamber of Commerce, the winner will automatically qualify to go on to the ICS World Chili Cook-Off, and this is what attracts competitors. “The money is inconsequential to these competitors,” says Dell. “They want a place in the World

Cook-Off, because there are only so many sanctioned cook-offs and this guarantees you a spot.” Applications are now available for ICS and other category entries, like the non-profit division, in which non-profit organizations like churches and ball teams can enter and win $1000 for their organization. There is also a corporate division, where local businesses compete for “bragging rights.” For fun, there will also be an open division. “We lovingly call the Open the ‘Road Kill Division,’” Dell Davis

Something about ‘wiping out the competition.’” This combination of formal and informal competition, along with an impressive line-up of all types of music and activities, are all part of a consistently well executed plan that keeps people from a multi-state area coming back year after year to experience the Bluegrass and Chili Festival in Claremore, Oklahoma. Festival sponsors include: City of Claremore, KOTV News on 6, Big Country 99.5, Armco Building/ Derickson Portable Building and the Claremore Chamber of Commerce. ASK MELLA AT MY CHOICE REAL TIPS FOR SENIORS LIVING INDEPENDENTLY

Home Care vs Home Health Home Care and Home Health are different types of care which are both provided at home. The key difference between these two types of care is that “home care” is non-medical care and “home health” is medical care. Home care is provided by caregivers who are trained to understand the nuances of senior care. Caregivers help older adults with activities of daily living or just some friendly companionship. Home care is classified as companion care and is considered non-medical. Reasons to hire a caregiver include: • Needing assistance with daily living including standby shower, meal preparation, medication reminders, dressing, light housekeeping • Not driving and require transportation, assistance going to doctor appointments, grocery shopping, paying bills • Live alone, may be at risk for social isolation and loneliness Home care can be covered by Long Term Care

insurance, which is a separate insurance plan you purchase just for this need or the cost is paid for out of pocket. Only very low income seniors will qualify for home care assistance with Medicaid. Seniors who want to live in their own home in their golden years might consider a reverse mortgage to free up the equity in their home to pay for home care. Reverse mortgage lenders will carefully review your home asset, your age and care needs, to determine if this is a good option for you. Home Health is medical care provided by a nurse, physical therapist or other skilled medical professional and is prescribed as part of a medical care plan following hospitalization. Home Health includes: • Skilled nursing, injections, wound care • Medical tests • Administration of medications Home health is considered medical care and

Q & A with Financial Advisor Linda Rainwater Q: A:

Q: A:

What is the significance of the bull and bear? I hear these terms but am not sure what they mean. Thank you. – Wondering Wanda Great question Wanda! A bull market is a market that is going up and is as strong and difficult to stop as a herd of bulls. Bulls thrust their horns up and this is similar to the market moving up over time. People tend to have confidence in a bull market and are not usually hesitant to invest. A bear market is a market that is going down and where people are not as willing to invest because they may be concerned they will lose money. Bears attack by moving their paws downward. In a bear market the charts are heading down. It is difficult to be brave around a bear and it is also difficult to invest when the market is down. There is negative news during a bear market and that makes investing very difficult. If you are very cautious, you may be able to make some great buys during bear markets. Subtracting the emotion from the market will help you make wiser financial decisions, but this is difficult to do!

There are a lot of commercials advertising gold. Is gold a good investment? – Eager Eugene Gold is a metal that does not increase in value all by itself. It does not invent new products or come up with new ideas. Historically gold is most popular when other investments are not doing well. It is important to consider buying precious metals when they are not expensive. Demand for gold can increase or decrease its value. We usually see more advertising for gold when the price of gold is high. Precious metals can help stabilize your overall portfolio, but gold should not be a main investment to count on for long term growth.

Where to Stop Before You Shop The District on Main in Claremore offers insight on the latest trends and products for the back-to-school season.

By Lorrie Ward

As the school year kicks off, you may be ready to shop for a new wardrobe but still not know exactly what to buy. New clothing is an expected expense; however, there’s no sense in wasting money on clothes that will quickly fall out of trend. Don’t you wish you could peek into the future before you make this investment? You can! Visit The District on Main in Claremore. This charming boutique offers more than just a great selection of clothing and accessories. When you visit The District on Main, you get expert advice and insight from owner Cari Bohannan and staff, who work hard to remain aware of upcoming trend changes, available new products and the hottest product lines. “This year, we are seeing a lot more solids with a trendy style versus the trendy prints we saw last season,” says Cari. “The concentration will be more on style and fabric feel.”

Cari notes that certain popular styles, like leggings, are on their way out, while other items, like vests, will still be considered popular. She reports that the trending colors will be cranberry and deep olive, with floral patterns. Soft, flowing materials and suede will be popular as well. Accessory items are undergoing some major changes as well. For instance, many people do not realize that most public places, like sports stadiums, are requiring that any bags brought past the gate be see-through. As necessity is the mother of invention, the John Hart Company has added see through bags to their already gorgeous line up. The District on Main carries a huge selection of these bags, which include backpacks, cosmetic bags and even laundry bags, which make great gifts for those who are going off to college. To add a personal touch, anyone who orders John Hart products

has the option to special order monogramming for their items. At The District on Main, John Hart is in the great company of other quality accessory lines, like Brighton who specializes in jewelry, handbags and footwear, Kendra Scott jewelry and Rustic Cuff. You can also find an array of wonderful body care products from Archipelago Botanicals, as well as candles from Capri Blue. To really start the year off right, you will want to get organized—why not do it in style? The District on Main has the latest Lily Pulitzer Agendas, just in time for the school year. Cari really likes these agendas because they cover seventeen months— August 2016 through December 2017—rather than the typical twelve or fifteen months. “Those extra few months are really a plus,” she says. These agendas are displayed right up front, along with one of the newer product lines carried at The District

on Main: Corkcicle. These thermal canteens and tumblers are insanely popular as of late because they keep hot and cold drinks at the desired temperature for unheard Sales Associate Kayla Dossett displays the latest of lengths bags from John Hart. of time. Start by plugging your spending leaks. At first it’s only a little drip of cash spent on morning java, lunch out or the latest and greatest musthave new gadget. Before long it is a full blown crack in your wallet, draining your savings account. The damage can be severe, such as costing more than $15,000 in credit card debt for the average American household, according to a recent study by NerdWallet. “It’s not easy sticking to a budget,” said Brenda Romesburg, single mom who decided to simplify her finances. “But having money in my savings for emergencies, or for when I want to take the kids to the park, to the movies or on a vacation, is absolutely worth the sacrifice.” When Romesburg made the decision to reduce her spending, she started by going over her bills and looking for areas to make cuts. “I changed my cell phone

evision for years and then having high-definition put in front of you and realizing how much better the picture is.” She notes that most children with vision problems have simply learned to accommodate the problem and that each child, like her own children, will present it in different ways. Some behavior issues can even be traced to vision, as a child who cannot see will not pay attention and may become bored and get into mischief to alleviate boredom. “It is important to start the school year off right and have their eyes examined now,” Shelley advises. “Don’t wait until they are already having problems in class.” Even if a child starts out with good vision, regular exams are still important because new problems can arise so gradually that they go without notice. This is especially true in the last decade as visually based technology has exploded. “Kids are using computers, tablets, cell phones, and all kinds of electronic devices which place a specific strain on the eye,” Shelley notes. “We have all kinds of technology to help with this, like blue light filtering technology and UV protectant for lenses.” She adds that even if a child doesn’t need a correction, he or she needs protection from these modern day strains. And as her son showed by wanting a pair of glasses to look “cool,” glasses no longer carry the stigma they once did. A child may wear the glasses simply to alleviate the stress their cell phone or tablet is placing on their eyes—or they may just want to make a fashion statement. This is easy to do at Dr. Hart’s Primary Eye Care, where

Have You Joined the Sisterhood? The Bixby boutique is an Instagram dream. Colorful shag carpets and cowhide line the floors; abundant chandeliers dripping with crystals, antlers, vintage kitsch, and delicious old chairs are among the eye candy decorating the store. Swoon-worthy merchandising includes a tree adorned with slip dresses in faded pastels, antique frames and boxes lined with velvet and filled with original rhinestone-encrusted belt buckles, and large wooden spools housing rows of colorful leather boots. Everything in the store fits a unique aesthetic: hip, eclectic fashions with an often edgy, bohemian southern girl vibe. Sassy slogans on the merchandise are filled with so many giggle-worthy or tweetable quips it’s worth the effort to mosey around the store to check them out. Burlap throw pillows read “Follow Your Arrow”; crisp white kitchen towels confess “I love Jesus but I cuss a little” or “Don’t feed the hipsters.” One item in particular seems to resonate the Twister

Soul Sisters philosophy of celebrating positive difference and sorority--a hand towel reading simply, “You’re a Great Mom.” “We want women to feel good about themselves,” Kelly explained. Kelly says the store’s custom jewelry is still one of the biggest draws. An entire corner of the store is a veritable treasure trove of vintage costume jewelry, leather belts, beads, chains, pendants, crystals, and any number of sparkly delights. Here, Kelly and her team craft their one-of-akind jewelry creations. The boutique carries about 20 different clothing lines, offering fashions from junior to plus size. The store offers a variety of basic items and wardrobe staples, but their specialty is in offering fun styles not available anywhere else--the boutique staff refer to these lovingly as “twisted” styles. Kelly’s goal is for all of the boutique’s items from jewelry to clothing to gifts to be unique and original. The store rotates out their inventory constantly so that every shipment of mer-

It is because of our hometown people in the Tulsa area that we were able to expand and help families across the country beautify their homes, including Kansas City, Branson, Northwest Washington and Canada,” he says. The grass roots will always remain in Tulsa, home of the Gleam Guard flagship office and headquarters. The Gleam Guard team is ready and eager to make many more Tulsa area homes look their best. There is still time to have kitchen cabinets refinished in as little as a day. Whole house projects, which include kitchen and bath cabinets,

The store typically only offers items for one run, ensuring a fresh inventory rotation. Often, guests will ask stylists to dress them up, giving boutique staff carte blanche to select pieces that work well for them. Women who don’t normally wear fringe or bright colors will frequently step outside of their comfort zones thanks to the the knowledgeable staff. Team members pride themselves on offering personal attention, something regular guests have come to appreciate. Kelly and her team believe in offering guests plenty of ideas without any pressure. Shelley also points out that colored contact lenses are popular with all ages and are available at Dr. Hart’s Primary Eye Care, even for those who are not vision impaired. Dr. Hart’s office encourages parents to implement good vision as a part of their child’s health and quality of life. “We take our kids to the doctor to get their vaccinations and to the dentist to get their teeth cleaned,” she says. “Aren’t their eyes just as important?” To answer this question with “yes”—and to help your children see their future in high-definition, make an appointment with Dr. Len Hart at Dr. Hart’s Primary Eye Care today. The Gleam Guard crew will be in and out, without interruptions or breakaways. Their work area, when finished, will look like no one was there. Aftercare is as simple as wiping with a damp cloth. Tracy says when people see the difference Gleam Guard has made in friends’ or relatives’ homes, they are sold. Even those considering new cabinets or refacing old cabinets frequently decide on Gleam Guard Dust Free Wood Refinishing instead. It’s the sensible solution that makes a big difference. “I love to show people how they can save money and still have beautiful wood finishes that look like new,” says Tracy. To complete the spring makeover, the Gleam Guard team can also deep clean rock and stone interior surfaces, such as
