The Sooner A The Better
BY DEANNA REBRO
thick, lush, head-turning landscape in the summer starts in winter. So much of caring for a lawn comes down to knowing what needs to be done and when to do it. The first step to a great yard is knowing who to call before spring. For the past 11 years, Sooner Lawn has been delivering a six-step lawn care program from early spring through fall that gets rid of weeds and nourishes grass so it will look good year-round. Owner and U.S. Army Captain Michael Bolton says that early spring is the best time to begin preparing your lawn. Sooner Lawn’s six-step program begins with an application of pre-emergent herbicide for crabgrass control, continues with additional weed control and fertilizers during spring and summer, and ends with a winterization weed control in the fall. While many homeowners treat their own lawns, the Sooner Lawn professionals take things to the next level. They treat lawns with the right formulations for that particular grass at the right times throughout the year for optimum results, applying lime to regulate proper soil ph to allow maximum effectiveness of fertilizers, and monitoring for insects and diseases. One of the hallmarks of Sooner Lawn is quick results. “We don’t have to tell our customers their lawns are getting better. They can see improvement each time we’re there,” says Michael. One customer, president and landscaping chairman of The Reserve at Battle Creek said, “The Reserve looks better that it has ever looked in the past, thanks to the Sooner crew. They are very professional and take great pride in their work. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a lawn care company.” Michael adds that Sooner Lawn’s prices are below most, if not all, other local lawn care companies. And their prompt and professional customer service goes above and beyond expectations. “We keep our customers happy by offering great service at a great price with great results. Just give us a chance to prove it,” he says.

A five-year customer echoes his comment. “We have found Michael’s work to be very good, as well as his pricing. We would highly recommend his services.” Sooner Lawn serves residential and commercial customers throughout Tulsa, Broken Arrow, Bixby, Jenks, Sand Springs, Owasso and Claremore. Optional services include fertilization of flowerbeds, aeration for more effective watering and nourishment, perimeter control, insect control of fleas, ticks, ants, spiders and chinch bugs, mole control, turf disease control and fescue seeding. They are fully licensed and insured, and all their recommended work is guaranteed. Sooner Lawn is also accredited with the Better Business Bureau. Preparation now will go a long way toward enjoying the healthy green lawn you want this summer. And you don’t have to lift a finger except to call Sooner Lawn.

he Oklahoma Arts Council recently announced the names of 14 individuals and five organizations that will be honored for their contributions to the arts in Oklahoma during the 42nd Governor’s Arts Awards on Feb. 28. Mark Frie, Tulsa Performing Arts Center Director and president of the ARTSOK Regional Arts Alliance of Broken Arrow, is among those being honored with the Arts In Education Award. Frie’s recognition comes from his involvement with the Kristin Chenoweth Arts & Education Fund. Together with the Emmy and Tony-winning actress, they developed the Broadway Boot Camp and Master Class programs to help aspiring entertainers learn the ropes of the performing arts world. For the past three years, students in grades 9-12 from across the state have auditioned to be in the camp and work one-on-one with Chenoweth and other entertainment professionals. In addition, Frie has been instrumental in helping the City of Broken Arrow to build and develop a creative arts center in the Rose District, meant to service under privileged students in after school programs. This endeavor is ongoing and will continue to evolve over the coming years. The awards will be presented during a special ceremony in the fourth floor rotunda at the Oklahoma state Capitol, followed by a reception outside the Betty Price Gallery on the Capitol’s first floor. Any questions about the ceremony can be directed to Joel Gavin of the Oklahoma Arts Council at 405-521-2037.

or the fourth year in a row, Youth At Heart is holding its annual gala to showcase its mission and the incredible people involved with it. The Mirror Mirror Grandslam Gala, being held at the DoubleTree Warren Place on April 6 will celebrate all the work that goes into making Youth At Heart the success it is. Youth At Heart is a non-profit agency that helps kids who are either left alone or unsupervised after school. It combines sports and education enrichment to

assist youth living in Tulsa’s socio-economically challenged neighborhoods. Programs consist of tutoring, character training, youth mentoring, health and fitness training, sports leagues, career exploration, community service and summer camp. The unique factor about Youth At Heart is that they provide the transportation to and from activities, removing the barrier many kids have from getting help. Students receive one-onone tutoring for 26 weeks during the school year and the sports

programs run year-round. Some of the valuable lessons learned from many of the activities include group dynamics, health and fitness, engagement and general well-being, just to name a few. Director of Development Marquetta Finley is quick to point out that field trips are also planned for the kids. “We’ve taken them to the Cirque du Soleil and The Tulsa Botanic Garden, but we balance that with community service in the nursing homes and food banks. We want the kids to see what it’s like to be
giving members of society.” One of the best parts of being involved with Youth At Heart is hearing the alumni success stories. “Just the other day, a team member mentioned we got a letter from one of our alumni with a picture of his family letting us know what a difference his involvement in our program made in his life. That’s what it is all about,” says Marquetta. The Grandslam Gala will not be your typical black-tie ball. Instead, it’s encouraged you wear your favorite sports team
jersey and jeans. Several team mascots will be present as well as some surprise sports celebrities. Keith Isbell and Scott Gaffen will emcee the event where there will be a trivia challenge, cheer off and even a tail gate reception. Tickets are available online for $75 a plate. After school programs provide a solid return on investment. Research shows that for every one dollar invested in a program like Youth At Heart, it saves at least three dollars by increasing kids’ earning potential, improving
kids’ performance at school and reducing crime and juvenile delinquency. Youth At Heart has served more than 40,000 kids for over 40 years and they would love you to be a part of the festivities this year to support Tulsa kids. Put April 6 on your calendar now and plan to join in on the fun.

THE FUNCTION, RESPONSIBILITY AND PERFORMANCE OF THE
TULSA COUNTY
ASSESSOR’S OFFICE
M
BY JOHN A. WRIGHT
any people are probably unaware of the effort the Tulsa County Assessor puts forth in order to meet with citizen groups and help them understand how the property tax system in Oklahoma functions. If you own real estate or a business, you can expect to get a tax bill. Most of us would rather not have to pay taxes, but often when people have an opportunity to hear about how the system functions and get answers to their questions, it helps dissipate some of their frustration. Citizens are surprised to discover how structured the functions of the assessor’s office are. There are constitutional, statutory, regulatory, and professional guidelines that must be followed. And it must be done at the same time of the year each year. The process is statistical in nature because we perform “mass appraisal”, which means we analyze a number of market and other factors and mathematically determine a property’s value. We do a good job of this, and our performance is subjected to a rigorous audit by the Oklahoma Tax Commission every year. That performance is then reported to the State Board of Equalization. Since the audit went into effect in 2012, the Tulsa County Assessor has been at or near the top in the state each year, including two perfect scores. At every meeting with citizens, we take the opportunity to ensure the homeowners are getting the exemptions to which they are entitled. If you own and live in your home on January 1, you can apply for a Homestead Exemption. On average, this will save taxpayers around $131 a year. You need only apply, and it can be done online. If your gross

household income from all sources is less than $63,900 and you are 65 years of age or older, you may qualify for the Property Valuation Limitation (Senior Freeze). This freezes the taxable fair cash value of your home, meaning the taxable fair cash value can’t be raised. In addition, veterans who are 100%, permanently disabled can apply for a 100% exemption from property taxes. To learn more about these and other exemptions, you are invited to visit our website at www.assessor.tulsacounty.org. Or you can call our office at (918) 596-5100. Our employees are genuinely interested in answering your questions and helping ensure that you are receiving the exemptions for which you qualify. John A. Q&A with Financial Advisor Linda Rainwater Q: Do I need a financial advisor if I don’t yet have money to invest? – Hoping Harry
A: It can be very helpful to begin learning from a financial advisor before you are ready to invest. Many financial advisors are willing to spend time teaching you how to achieve financial success and are knowledgeable about the pitfalls to avoid when making financial decisions. Just as you can learn math or football from a book, you can learn to invest by reading, but it is faster, easier, and more fun to learn with a coach. There are many routes to financial independence and you will need to be particular about who you select. I recommend meeting with several financial advisors until you find one you trust, who looks out for your best interest, and who is successful with their own finances. A Bucket Approach by Mary Wood, wealth advisor, RCB Bank Trust
Legendary investor Warren Buffett defines investing as “… the process of laying out money now to receive more money in the future.” The key to successful investing is setting clear-cut goals. Know what you want, the cost to get it and how long you have to save. We all have different comfort levels when it comes to investing our money. We call this risk tolerance. The concept of risk tolerance refers not only to your level of comfort in taking a risk, but also your financial ability to endure the consequences of loss. Therefore, when it comes to investing, there is no onesize-fits-all strategy. When I talk about investing with my clients, I like to use a bucket visualization. Imagine investing as three buckets. Everyone needs to begin with a foundation - bucket one. This is your readily available 20 |

cash, including your savings, emergency fund and short-term investments. Once you have bucket one filled, you are ready to toss money into buckets two and three, your mid-term and longterm goals. The amount you invest in each bucket varies by your time horizon and risk tolerance. Bucket two consists of low-risk investments while bucket three is long-term, higher growth risk investments. As with any plan, it is important to monitor your portfolio to ensure you stay on track with your goals. If you plan to work with a financial advisor, make sure they are working for you with your best interest in mind. It’s important that you have an open line of communication with your advisor. I am here to help answer questions you may have about investing even if you are not an RCB Bank customer. Feel free to call me at 918.342.7100 or email mwood@bankrcb.net. arents with kids in school will be the first to tell you that education comes with unique challenges for each child, especially when it comes to homework. Luckily, there is someone who can take what used to be a stumbling block and turn it into a stepping stone. Dr. Trissy Pitkin, founder of Academic Advantage in Owasso, has created that stepping stone, making your student’s success easier than you ever thought possible. Unlike conventional educational services, Dr. Pitkin addresses the root cause of any student’s challenge. She examines the gross and fine motor skills, visual and auditory processing, attention and memory, academics and even social and family dynamics. “If all the puzzle pieces don’t fit, that could very well be the problem, that’s why we address the whole child,” says Pitkin. Academic Advantage is set up with several different stations, so each area is tackled. “The improvement in academics is just the cherry on top,” adds Dr. Pitkin. Although her business has enjoyed more than 20 years of success, Dr. Pitkin started out as a teacher. “I always knew my career would evolve. I saw such a great need for kids who required help with dyslexia, ADD/ADHD, reading and a multiple of other challenges including test anxiety.” As she learned more about each field, she became passionate about making it her full-time calling. Dr. Pitkin has her doctorate in Clinical Christian Counseling and holds a master’s degree in Multi-Categorical Disabilities. She is a Certified Educational Therapist, Attention Specialist, Reading Specialist, Board Certified Cognitive Specialist, Dyslexia Remediation
Specialist, and a Licensed Educator. All of this rounds out her qualifications. Besides her vast experience, Dr. Pitkin also takes great pride in advocating for her students when necessary with their teachers. “I like to think of it as a team effort. I’ve been on the other side, and if I can work with the teachers to come up with a plan to help the student achieve his or her highest level, it’s a win-win!” Constant research, evaluation and looking at new approaches to help students better themselves is another distinction of Academic Advantage. “I’m helping them not only achieve higher academic success, but assisting them with building better life skills.” She says that although most of the curriculum she uses is based on proven results, she also believes it’s important to use a lot of cheerleading and teaching self-talk. She will be there for your student from grade school until they are ready for the ACT Prep Program offered by Academic Advantage. Dr. Pitkin agrees, sometimes it’s difficult to know when your child may need assistance. “When in doubt, get help!” Academic Advantage offers a free 30-minute phone consultation to see if her business is the right fit for your student. If so, that call could be followed by an evaluation, a more in-depth consultation and a meet and greet with your child. Though her business has received many accolades by former clients, Dr. Pitkin says the best reward she’s ever received is knowing a child’s life has been changed for the better.

We wanted to provide an opportunity for girls and their dads, or special male family members, to connect—an evening out with lots of pampering, no electronics, “ explains Herb McSpadden, Executive Director for Rogers County Youth Services (RCYS), “the ‘Me and My Guy Dance’ does just that!” The event, now in its eleventh year in Claremore, has grown substantially in popularity and attendance since its

This year, the theme for the event is “Mad Hatter’s Ball”, and the ballroom will be transformed into a magical wonderland. Everything from teacup centerpieces to a full candy bar will be onsite (with no peering ‘mom eyes’ to monitor the delectable intake). Girls of all ages are invited to come alongside a special male family member—a dad, grandfather, uncle—and dance the night away to tunes sure to suit all tastes and ages. As for the dress code, guests can arrive in a limo or bring the pickup truck, wear formal attire or Sunday best, from tuxedos to boots and jeans—the idea is to dress up and show up for an evening out. “The father-daughter bond is so important, and this is a chance to spend some time together, so we want everyone to be comfortable,”

states McSpadden. RCYS also needs corporate sponsorships for the dance which are available at varying levels. The donations are tax-deductible, of course, and contributors will receive public recognition. The proceeds from ticket sales as well as individual or corporate sponsorships go to serve a very important cause. RCYS operates a 6 bed emergency youth shelter for adolescents, ages 6 to 18,that have been removed from the home due b to t negligence, abuse or delinquency. The adolescents, while awaiting placement, receive 24 hour care, p including: i meals; clothing and necessities like winter coats and n gloves; transportation to and from school and school supplies; support and transportation for extracurricular activities; gifts if they are in residence during the holidays or their birthdays, etc. The shelter, essentially, serves as the home away from home while the youth are in transition, thus RCYS requires a great deal of financial support to provide the necessities and normalcy to the kids in the shelter. Don your best attire, grab your ‘date’ and head to the “Mad Hatter’s Ball” this year for a fabulous evening supporting a great cause!

Contact Nick today because preplanning is the most important thing you can do for your family. From a very early age, Nick Reynolds knew what he wanted to do when he grew up - he wanted to own a funeral home. He began working in the funeral industry when he was 14 years old. In 1998, Nick opened the first Nick Reynolds Funeral Service in Collinsville, OK. Shortly after that he built the funeral home located at 1916 S. Sheridan Road in Tulsa, OK. Today, Nick, his sons Nicholas and Blake, his mother Connie and their staff, continue to provide quality service to their community and surrounding areas. They feel like “nothing is more of an honor than when someone you know entrusts you with their loved one’s service”.
