Nothing says new year like a new look. With its earth sustainable practices, Salon Pure in Owasso offers a unique salon experience for customers. Owner and Master Designer Cathy Schmitt earned her license in general cosmetology from Tulsa Technology Center in 1993. A graduate of Owasso High School, she used her skills to put herself through Northeastern State University, where she earned her Bachelors in psychology. “At the time I was starting, I honestly thought I’d be terrible,” said Cathy, “but come to find out I had a real knack for it. I love what I do. It’s probably one of the most fun jobs I’ve ever had.” The Owasso native practiced her craft for 14 years in Tulsa before returning exclusively to her hometown. She opened Salon Pure Loft off of Main Street in 2011. As her client base grew, she decided to move to her current space off Owasso Expressway, just south of Classic Chevrolet. A lover of the environment, Cathy has one goal in mind: to offer clients the freshest styles and ideas without increasing her carbon footprint. “I chose the name Salon Pure because I have passion for the environment,” Cathy said. “We have stations to recycle our Cathy Schmitt, plastic and Owner and Stylist of aluminum Salon Pure products. We do a lot of upcycling for our décor, which you can see in

our pallet wall and the coat rack. Even on the products we use, we keep it green with eco-friendly and ammonia-free hair color.” The Salon Pure team continuously educates themselves on new product lines. They carry products such as Olaplex, Goldwell color, Pureology, Kevin Murphy, CND shellac and Keratin smoothing treatments by Coppola. The salon also features a back bar with refills on shampoos and conditioners for a discount. Cathy is currently mentoring stylists in hopes of expanding her staff. Her sixteen-year-old daughter, Averie, also helps parttime with reception work and assisting stylists in whatever ways they need. “I love this community,” says Cathy. “All three of my kids, Averie being the youngest, have been in Owasso schools. I like to give back to this community in whatever ways I can. My clients are like my family. Some of them even call me the ‘hair-a-pist’ because of my psychology background.” The salon specializes in color, color correction, cutting, styling, balayage and haircuts for men, women and children. Other services offered include manicures, pedicures and massages, all by appointment. Prices vary based on customer and individual needs. Salon hours are Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The hair-a-pist is in. Stop by Salon Pure to see how you can love your hair and the earth this winter. SALON PURE 8361 N. By Carol Beck- Round Touch of Sun Tanning Salon has loyal support from its customers. The business has received awards not only for their salon in Owasso, but at their Sand Springs facility as well. The well-managed facilities put emphasis on cleanliness, well-trained employees and quality, topof-the-line equipment. One other factor that store manager Megan Minihan emphasizes is that Touch of Sun is a nocontract tanning salon. “We don’t feel like we need a contract to keep our customers,” says Megan. “We also do not draft bank accounts. Our customers pay by the month.” Regular tanners also receive rewards in the form of discounts when they renew monthly. “With Express and Turbo unlimited month packages, our regular customers can save money each month for continuing to tan with us,” she adds. “It is a way for us to honor our customers.” For the infrequent tanner, 10 | Values January 2017

a customer can purchase point packages. “This is for the customer who wants to maintain a tan or get just a little bit of color here and there,” says Megan, “and the points do not expire for two years.” Point packages can be used in any combination with the different beds, including the lay down and stand up variety. “We have quality equipment,” adds Megan. “Our Royal Sun beds are excellent, and we maintain the lamps.” The Owasso tanning salon offers 18 beds: four Express Royal Sun beds, nine Turbo Royal Sun beds, two Turbo stand up beds, and two Ultra or high pressure beds, including the Ultra High Ultra Bronze and the Ultra High UV Scan. The salon also offers an age-defying sunless tanning booth by Versa Spa. “This sunless spray system is UV free,” says Megan. “We sell it by the session, or with unlimited tanning, the customer can upgrade to a spray tan.”

The Versa Spa system, according to Megan, is for those who want instant color in a single session. “It’s for lastminute people who don’t have time to tan or want to be UV free. Its also safe for pregnant women and pageant kids.” The Versa Spa system is a full-body treatment system that allows the customer to select from a combination of solutions that will bronze and smooth the skin. The system doesn’t just tint the skin, but creates a complete spa-like session that results in a healthy, natural look. “ With the Versa Spa spray tan you have to wait 4-6 hours before showering to see results,” Megan says. “The solution continues to develop over 12 hours. Once you shower, it usually lasts 7-10 days, gradually fading away. It is perfect for parties, last minute tans and the customer who doesn’t tan in a bed while still having the

appearance of a natural tan. Employees at Touch of Sun are well educated. “Our employees are trained to know about the equipment and how skin tans. They are required to take a test to become Smart Tan certified,” says Megan. “We also maintain a very clean facility. That is important to us.” The multi-level tanning salon is located in the Fairway Market in Owasso at 9540 N. Garnett Road. It is open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, and from noon until 6 p.m. Sunday. February peak season hours are 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and noon until 7 p.m. Sunday. “Outdoor Creations really helped us out in our time of need after we received storm damage to our roof, window, and interior of our house. It was great dealing with one contractor that could do all of the work. They went over and above making sure we were happy along each step of the process. - S. Sprague

TIPS TO HELP YOU START THINKING LIKE A SAVER

GET FINANCIALLY FIT IN 2017 By Jocelyn Wood

This is the year you’re going to take charge of your money. No more rationalizing overspending. No more excuses why you can’t put money into savings. No more regrets. Everyone can save more money. The question you have to ask yourself is what kind of life do you want? Do you want to be debt free? Do you want those new black leather boots? Do you want to retire comfortably? Do you want the newly released smartphone? Do you want to stop living paycheck to paycheck? Do you want your daily large caffé latte from your favorite coffee shop? Saving money is a personal choice only you can make, and the commitment takes effort. It requires discipline and self-control, but the

end result – more money in your savings, a larger down payment on a home or being debt free – is worth your diligence. Here are three practical tips to help you change your attitude about

MATCH YOUR SPENDING

If you struggle with sticking to a budget or tracking your expenses, try this: save an amount equal to whatever you spend on nonessential

indulgences. If you want your morning java, put $4 in a jar. If you plan to eat lunch out, put $8 in jar. You will literally see your spending

REMEMBER YOU WORK HARD

Before you spend your hard-earned money, take the cost of the item you want and divide it by your hourly wage. If you want a $90 pair of boots and you make $10 an hour, are those boots worth the nine

hours of work? Also, pay yourself first. That means put money aside from every paycheck into a savings or retirement account. Saving even $25 a month adds up. Set up

DO NOT BUY ON IMPULSE

Never purchase expensive items on impulse. Think over each purchase for at least 24 hours. During that period, do steps one and two. This will help you consider how necessary the item is that you want to buy. It will also help you have fewer regrets about purchases and more money for savings.

You don’t have to do it alone. Find someone who will help you stay on track of your savings goal. Check out AmericaSaves. org, a site dedicated to helping individuals save money, reduce debt and build wealth. You can take the savings pledge and set up text alerts to receive encouraging

By Erica Ludwig Fit For Her in Owasso is coming up on 12 years of business in March, and it’s no surprise why. Ladies are always greeted with a hello and a smile. This friendly, extraordinarily clean, 6,400 square foot facility features 24/7 access, 19 cardio stations, a comprehensive free weight area, machine weights, a functional training room, two video monitored children’s play rooms, a very well appointed locker room, tanning, large sauna, head to toe massage chairs, personal training, and an amazing, state of the art, 2,400 square foot fitness studio where 22 classes are taught each week by some of Owasso’s best instructors. All of this coupled with their no-pressure policy, there is little wonder why 16 | Values January 2017

the community’s love for Fit For Her has only gotten stronger over the years. “Our goal is to offer affordable rates in a nonjudgmental, fun and supportive atmosphere,” said Adana Gittelman, owner, instructor, and personal trainer of Fit For Her. Designed by a woman, exclusively for women, Fit For Her offers a clean, secure and upscale fitness center at a cost that will not put a strain on finances. Every inch of the facility is meticulously maintained, with even the smallest issue addressed within 24 hours. The team at Fit For Her is ecstatic for the return of their 4th annual Healthy Her weight loss program,

coming in February. Back by popular demand, the program that began three years ago, ended last year with more than 40 successful participants losing anywhere from 7 to 35 pounds. The gym goes to great lengths for the program’s participants. Ladies can expect a full diet guide for the first 21 days, a 5-phase lifestyle guide, and educational meetings once a week on subjects such as nutrition, lifestyle education and food label information. Of course, all along the way participants will receive accountability and support from fellow participants all pushing toward the same goal. Fit For Her also offers great value in boot camps throughout the year. Taught by Melinda Young, Fit

For Her instructor and owner/operator of MFIT365, these eight-week programs motivate women to strive for something more in their workouts. Melinda not only provides support in the gym, but online as well. Boot camps are available to members and non-members. “Melinda’s Boot camp is fantastic for those who are looking for a greater challenge,” said Office Manager Stephanie Webb. “It’s wonderful to see the growth of the women who have done the boot camp.” The ladies-only fitness facility offers 22 fitness classes each week with over 12 different disciplines to choose, including: Zumba, Cardio Kick Boxing, Tabata, Max 30, PiYo Strength, Yoga, Tai Chi, AIT, Step

Combo, RIP, and Boot Camp. Certified instructors and/or personal trainers teach all classes. Starting in February, Fit For Her will be introducing “Fit Barre” to their line-up of classes. For those who would like to get a feel for the gym before committing to a membership, Fit For Her offers pleasant no pressure tours for prospective clients with a one-week trial of classes and all aspects of the facilities. In doing so, potential members can better know if this Owasso gym is the right fit for them. Another perk of membership at Fit For Her is the close proximity to “Owasso Nutrition Plus”, located adjacent to the Fit For Her Office. Meeting Owasso’s Nutritional needs for the past 12 years, this well stocked sports nutrition store aims to meet or beat any local competitors advertised price on nationally branded products. Ladies, stop by Fit For Her to meet the friendly staff and learn why they have consistently been voted one of the best fitness facilities in Owasso.

Q & A with Financial Advisor Linda Rainwater Q:

My financial advisor just called to let me know the Department of Labor passed a law that says that I am not allowed to keep my current investments and that I need to change how I invest. Is this true? I like my current investments.

A:

The Federal Department of Labor (DOL) is working on new laws that may affect your retirement savings. Retirement accounts include Traditional IRAs, Roth IRAs, SEP and SIMPLE accounts, 401k, 403b, and other retirement savings plans. The DOL fiduciary rule is 1023 pages long and subject to interpretation. Many firms are changing their investment offerings and strategies before the rules are finalized. Some firms have decided to change the fees that are charged on retirement accounts and others are not changing their fees. It’s important to note that no changes are required by law at this time. Because not all of the implications are clear just yet, it may not be necessary to make any changes. I suggest that you discuss your concerns with your financial advisor and possibly seek a second opinion. It is your money and you get to decide how it will be invested.

By Deanna Rebro A thick, lush, head-turning landscape in the summer starts in winter. So much of caring for a lawn comes down to knowing what needs to be done and when to do it. The first step to a great yard is knowing who to call before spring. For the past 11 years, Sooner Lawn has been delivering a six-step lawn care program from early spring through fall that gets rid of weeds and nourishes grass so it will look good year-round. Owner and U.S. Army Captain Michael Bolton says that early spring is the best time to begin preparing your lawn. Sooner Lawn’s sixstep program begins with an application of pre-emergent

22 | Values January 2017

herbicide for crabgrass control, continues with additional weed control and fertilizers during spring and summer, and ends with a winterization weed control in the fall. While many homeowners treat their own lawns, the

particular grass at the right times throughout the year for optimum results, applying lime to regulate proper soil ph to allow maximum effectiveness of fertilizers, and monitoring for insects and diseases. One of the hallmarks of

Sooner Lawn professionals take things to the next level. They treat lawns with the right formulations for that

Sooner Lawn is quick results. “We don’t have to tell our customers their lawns are getting better. They can see improvement each time we’re there,” says Michael. One customer, president and landscaping chairman of The Reserve at Battle Creek said, “The Reserve looks better that it has ever looked in the past, thanks to the Sooner crew. They are very professional and take great pride in their work. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a lawn care company.” Michael adds that Sooner Lawn’s prices are below

most, if not all, other local lawn care companies. And their prompt and professional customer service goes above and beyond expectations. “We keep our customers happy by offering great service at a great price with great results. Just give us a chance to prove it,” he says. A five-year customer echoes his comment. “We have found Michael’s work to be very good, as well as his pricing. We would highly recommend his services.” Sooner Lawn serves residential and commercial customers throughout Tulsa, Broken Arrow, Bixby, Jenks, Sand Springs, Owasso and Claremore. Optional services include fertilization of flowerbeds, aeration for more effective watering and nourishment, perimeter control, insect control of fleas, ticks, ants, spiders and chinch bugs, mole control, turf disease control and fescue seeding. They are fully licensed and insured, and all their recommended work is guaranteed. Sooner Lawn is also accredited with the Better Business Bureau. Preparation now will go a long way toward enjoying the healthy green lawn you want this summer. And you don’t have to lift a finger except to call Sooner Lawn.
