Hogs ‘N’ Hot Rods The 11th annual car and bike show returns Saturday, June 9 to downtown Collinsville. By Lorrie Ward On Saturday, June 9, if you drive near Collinsville, you’ll likely hear the rumbling and revving of many motors. That’s because it’s time for the 11th annual Hogs ’N’ Hot Rods Car and Bike Show, Oklahoma’s award winning premiere event showcasing classic, custom and vintage cars and motorcycles, and providing a day of fun for the entire family. Hogs ’N’ Hot Rods is an outdoor show, featuring an assortment of vendors, arts and crafts, downtown shopping, helicopter rides, live music, and a great selection of foods. There will also be a Kids Zone with giant inflatables for children to enjoy. The entire event is centered on the car and bike show,

in which owners of vintage cars and motorcycles compete in several categories. Special awards will include Best Paint, Best Engine, Celebrity Choice, Best Display, and Best of Show, for which a cash award and trophy will be presented along with the other prizes at the award ceremony at 4:30 p.m. For a detailed list of categories, interested parties can visit the Hogs ’N’ Hot Rods website at www.collinsvilledowntowninc.com/hogsnHot Rods.html. Collinsville Downtown’s promotion director, Sherry Campbell, spent a large amount of time this year building this website presence for Hogs ’N’ Hot Rods, not only to get more information (continued on page 22)

With the June 26th primary election quickly approaching, one of the main election slots Rogers County citizens will be asked to fill is for Rogers County Clerk. Long-time Rogers County resident Robin Anderson is asking for consideration for this position, pointing to her eight years of service in county government as proof she has the needed reputation, skills and commitment to do the job well. Robin is a true conservative Republican with Republican family roots going back to 1959. Her family is active in the Verdigris Assembly of God. “As an experienced county (continued on page 22)

Ponder the Beauty The 20th annual Green Country Water Garden Society Pond Tour will be held June 23-24, 2012. By Lorrie Ward It makes up 70 percent of the earth’s surface. It constitutes 70 percent of our brains. With water being so big a part of who we are, it isn’t any wonder that the sight and sound of water often soothes and inspires the human spirit. It also isn’t any wonder that the Green Country Water Garden Society Pond Tour has spread over the last 20 years from Tulsa into many of its surrounding areas. Homes on the tour will be open on Saturday, June 23 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, June 24 from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. “We have 22 ponds on this year’s tour, with ponds in Sapulpa, Sand Springs, Bixby, Broken Arrow, Collinsville, and (continued on page 22)

Champagne Tastes on a Beer Budget: Tips for Planning Your Retirement BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT

When it comes to planning for retirement, you best not be caught with your pants down! The sooner you get started saving and planning for retirement the better. So many times I hear people say… “I just can’t afford to put money back for retirement.” Listen here, you can’t afford NOT to! The question is, how much should you be saving? A good rule of thumb is to save 20 times your expected annual expenses in the first year you plan to retire. This rule is based on spending – not income – and as such, is an important distinction from income-based rules. In retirement what matters is how much you spend – not how much you used to earn. The 20 times rule is based on first estimating expenses after subtracting any pension and Social Security payments. Assuming a retirement of about 20 years, this nest egg would let you spend 5% of the balance while investing the remainder at modest rates of return. For example, if you and your spouse think you will need $50,000 a year and plan on $20,000 from Social Security, you would need 20 times 30,000 or $600,000. For a more conservative approach, estimate this rule of thumb based on 25 times annual spending. Now, I have been listening to folks’ problems and solving financial equations for over 20

ment, your benefits are pretty safe. However, for the younger crowd, don’t count on receiving all of the benefit estimated in the statement sent to you by the Social Security Administration every year, three months before your birthday.

years. Some of the common themes that I hear are the following: This is not your parents’ retirement. A lot of folks remember their parents retiring and living comfortably off of primarily Social Security and company pensions. Therefore, they really don’t have a model for the importance of putting back for their own retirement. In addition, 30 years ago retirement didn’t typically last too long. The life expectancy didn’t go far beyond the age of 70. Your retirement will be very different. You will live longer and you will likely be more active. 2) Don’t depend on Social Security and Company Pensions. As of 2004, the average annual Social Security retirement benefit was approximately $11,000. In other words, retirees cannot live on Social Security alone. For those in or near retire-

www.ValueNews.com

Company Pensions: The number of companies offering pensions is currently around 20%. This is down from 40% in 1975. Unless you are one of the lucky one in five, plan on saving your retirement money yourself. 3) So Bottom Line: It’s up to you! Unless your plan is to die young or to work forever, you need to stop “playing possum” about your retirement savings. It’s time to stop being a worry wart about it and start doing something about it. Take control of the one thing you have control over in planning for your retirement -YOU. How much YOU save, how YOU invest that savings, and how YOU protect and grow that savings in retirement is what you can control. Who you trust to help you with this process matters. Make hay while the sun shines! For more information go to www.waterstonewealth.com or call 918-272-1120. GGolf to Stop Child Trafficking Now The 3rd annual Stop Child Trafficking Now Golf Tournament will be July 16, 2012. By Duane Blankenship Stop Child Trafficking Now (SCTNow) funds efforts that target the demand side of child sex slavery. They target predators. The organization is making an impact in the fight against child sex trafficking, a problem identified as a growing issue in our nation and around the world – an issue needing every voice rising up against it. SCTNow diligently works to protect and deliver children from this heinous crime by focusing funding on efforts to stop demand, the buyers, predators, and traffickers. In short, SCTNow believes that their efforts to stop demand will have the power to interrupt the cycle of supply, demand, and distribution, resulting in fewer predators and, ultimately, fewer victims. SCTNow has a partnership program that funds other nonprofit organizations that provide shelter, care and victim services. Kristin Weis is the national events director and Tulsa ambassador for SCTNow. Her husband Jason Weis is the national sponsorship director and Tulsa ambassador. Monday, July 16 marks the date of the 3rd annual Stop Child Trafficking Now Golf Tournament, which

Kristin and Jason spearhead. The 2012 tournament will be held at the beautiful Golf Club of Oklahoma and promises to be a first-class golf event benefitting this worthy cause. Register

four-member team entry is $700. Beginning at 7:15 a.m., a continental breakfast will be served to participants as registration and a silent auction kick off. At 8:15 a.m., players will begin golf play.

This “intimidating foursome” from last year’s SCTNow Tournament included Navy SEAL Clark Stuart, Tulsa Police Chief Chuck Jordan, Tulsa District Attorney Tim Harris, and SCTNow Director and Ambassador Jason Weis. online at www.sctnow.org or call (918) 346-2168. Tournament format will be a four-player scramble. Individual entry is $175, and a

Lunch, a live auction, and awards will commence at 1:30 p.m. Members of the first-place team will each receive $150 Visa gift cards and bragging rights for

the year. Second-place team members will each receive $100 gift cards to Best Buy. Thirdplace winners will each receive $50 gift cards to BassPro Shops. There will be awards for a hole in one, closest to the pin, and the longest drive. Hole-inone prizes include a 2012 Cadillac SRX Crossover two-year lease, Carnival cruise, golf vacation, and set of new golf clubs. Visit the website for details and more information on the event, prizes and sponsorship packages. Presenting sponsor of the SCTNow Golf Tournament is The Vintage Pearl. Other major sponsors include QuikTrip, Dino’s, CrossComm, and Don Thornton Cadillac. Funds from the SCTNow Tournament will be used for awareness (educational promotions); advocacy (support of other anti-traffic partners); and action (funding special investigative teams in the United States, funding safe homes overseas, and reaching out to girls held as slaves and sold for prostitution). Girls who have found themselves trapped in prostitution are being contacted each week and given the opportunity for a way out and

placement into recovery programs. SCTNow’s Cyber Teams acquire an average of 32 predator profiles per week. These profiles are documented, and a percentage is turned over to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC). Many investigations are currently pending as SCTNow continues their hard work with local, state and federal law enforcement agencies. Kristin and Jason said that a recent national report estimated that over one million children are being exploited by the global commercial sex trade each year, and only 4,000 predator convictions are made each year. A child is abducted every nine minutes of every day. Stop Child Trafficking Now needs your help “now.”

SSkin Health Dr. Mallory Spoor-Baker offers tips for achieving healthy skin. By Dr. Mallory Spoor-Baker What is skin health? On the surface, it’s a new catch phrase in the cosmetic and aesthetic industry – a phrase to catch your attention. What does it mean? To me, it is in reference to devices and procedures which are supposed to promote healthier skin. I have been approached by several companies that are promoting these devices which perform the newest and greatest treatment for healthy skin. I don't know yet. If they sound too good to be true, they probably are. What is skin health, really? Skin health, to me, means the appearance of healthy-looking skin: moist, soft, clear, bright, resilient. You get the idea. How do we get it? The answer to that is very broad. Acquiring healthy skin is a process that realistically takes several months as well as several activities to get the results you may want. Just like getting our bodies healthy, we have to eat right, exercise and change bad habits in order to affect change to ourselves. It’s all a process, right? It takes some time and repeat effort at getting all the good activities in place and getting rid of all the bad activities. It's also not a linear path to achieve these things. Sometimes

it’s one step forward and two steps back. In my practice, which I’ve had since 1996, skin health has always meant encouraging my patients to take better overall care with the activities that damage skin and then performing procedures and applying products to get rid of the signs of the damage. Many of you are familiar with these procedures, which include different laser treatments such as IPL, Laser Genesis, and Pearl. These are three different laser procedures that do different things. I prefer laser procedures over surface procedures like chemical peels and microdermabrasion because lasers treat the whole skin, not just the outermost layers. I also feel that laser procedures, when applied correctly and safely, have the most value per dollar spent because they usually affect more than one problem and do not require as many treatments. You could have five microdermabrasion treatments, for example, and your skin might be slightly smoother, but you still have redness and prominent texture and wrinkles. Five Laser Genesis treatments can significantly reduce

redness, texture, and pore size. I could write pages and pages addressing the various procedures that are available and what they do. Anyone can come to my office and have a complimentary consult and find out what I might recommend. I would caution you to consider that any treatment that you hear about that is strictly for the surface will only marginally improve sun damage and aging skin because they are only superficial. To get at long-standing sun and age-related damage you must go deeper; you must use some type of laser. What type is used will depend on your skin type (color, tanning, characteristics), overall sun exposure history, and goals. You may also have to endure some degree of recovery or down time. All of this, again, depends on what you are trying to achieve. Sometimes I ask my patients, “Where do you want to go and how fast do you want to get there?” Having said that, however, I don't think you have to be drastic in your approach – the more aggressive the procedure, the higher degree of risk of significant down time or injury. I try to tailor treatment protocols

Acquiring beautiful skin is a process that takes time and requires adopting healthy habits. to what the patient is trying to achieve. Skin health can take some time and effort. I don't believe that there is any new procedure available that can do anything magic. I think we are seeing newer, updated versions of the same devices. It’s been my professional experience that device companies allude to much greater results than their device actually delivers, and in the wrong hands can potentially do a great deal of damage. So be aware that there is no great quick fix for anything. I also believe that to achieve true skin health, you must pursue activities that promote body health. You must eat better – fruits and vegetables! You must drink more water. You must get more sleep and try to decrease stress. You must control your sun exposure and stop smoking! You

must exercise. Your body and therefore your skin is a living organism that must be fed and protected to live a long, full life. If you want to look better, you must be responsible and responsive to your skin and your body's needs. If you beat yourself up, you will look beat up. Promote your skin’s health by taking care of it. Protect it and feed it. Treat it with various procedures, if you can and if you want to. Your face and your body will thank you, and you will live a longer, healthier life because of your efforts. educational venues that include documentaries, independent films, foreign and classic films, and related events. “We can hand pick our films,” according to Chuck, “and do things to help the community by offering special free screenings such as this one.” Funding to support the theater comes through memberships and donations. A large construction project under way includes two new screens and the restoration and reinstallation of the theater’s original pipe organ. A future phase will add laptop connectivity for big screen presentations during business meetings or for large school groups. But there is one thing that high technology has not, and will not, change at the Circle. The restored neon marquee from the 1950s still requires the letters to be hand inserted. It’s perhaps the only remaining task from the past at the only remaining historical movie theater still operating in Tulsa. Seating is limited, so guests are encouraged to arrive early for the free screenings. There is plenty of free parking behind the building, across the street and on the street. For more information, call the Circle Cinema business office at (918) 585-3456.

Circle Cinema will host five free screenings of “70th Anniversary Battle of Midway” on Monday, June 4. By Deanna Rebro On Monday, June 4, the Circle Cinema will pay tribute to local veterans with five free screenings of “70th Anniversary Battle of Midway.” This hour-long documentary film commemorates the most important naval battle of the Pacific Campaign of World War II. The Battle of Midway has come to be known as the turning point of the war. Just six months after Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor and at a time when communications were far from what we take for granted today, American naval commanders were able to set up a communications trap that foiled the Japanese efforts. As a result, four vital Japanese aircraft carriers were destroyed and more than 3,000 were killed. The American losses, though tragic, were a small fraction. Consequences from the threeday battle proved too large for the Japanese to overcome. Screenings will begin at 11 a.m. and continue at 1, 3, 5 and 7 p.m. The public is invited to attend free of charge. Cinema Circle Office Manager Chuck Foxen says they are pleased to once again pay tribute to America’s military veterans from

The theater, the oldest operating in the city, has been offering a military presentation since 2004. “The part that’s great,” he says, “is having all these people

come together.” Many veterans come and stay all day to network with others, share their stories and show their hats, uniforms and decorations. Guests can expect to see actual military

vehicles, a model carrier plane and lots of memorabilia and photos. The 5 and 7 showings will feature veteran speakers. “This is a great family event that has parents bringing their children and grandparents bringing their grandchildren to learn and meet some of the people who took part in shaping America’s history,” says Foxen. That’s similar to how the Circle Cinema itself has been a part of shaping Tulsa’s history. The modest neighborhood community theater that opened in 1928 at 12 S. Lewis was in Tulsa’s first suburban shopping center, Kendall Whittier. A checkered past includes family entertainment, western serials, James Bond features, blue movies, Hispanic films and approximately 10 “dark” years when only pigeons entered the theater whose marquee featured “For Sale.” In 2002, the Circle Cinema Foundation was formed to purchase the building and breathe new life into the Circle as a nonprofit cinema and film arts organization. Now on the National Register of Historic Places, the theater focuses on

Knee Replacement Paid Off in the Long Run Free of pain thanks to knee replacement surgery performed by Dr. LaButti, Carl McMann is again able to serve others.

By Duane Blankenship Carl McMann has spent most of his life as an athlete. He grew up in Sapulpa, where he met his wife Carla and graduated from Sapulpa High School. He served his country during Vietnam, Desert Storm, and Desert Shield, and did two tours of duty in Germany. Carl has been stationed in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Japan, and Hawaii while serving his 27-year career in the United States Army and Army Reserve. He retired a sergeant major in March of 1993. Carl was selected to represent the Army as a marathoner for three years early in his duty. He ran over 3,500 miles during that time. Carl was competing in the Trans-Mountain Marathon in El Paso, Texas when he began feeling pain in his back and knee, but he kept on running and finished the race. During this run, athletes gain one mile in altitude after starting at sea level. They then have to turn around and run back down to sea level. At about the 12-and-a-half mile mark, pain hit Carl, marking the beginning of the near unbearable aching he came to endure in both his knees. He had always enjoyed

Since his knee replacement surgery by Dr. LaButti, Carl McMann is again able to serve others through involvement with his church. hunting, but with the pain in both his knees was forced to give up hunting and many other physical activities he enjoyed. In 2006, Carl’s left knee had become a big issue. It was tough

going up stairs and much worse going down stairs. He was miserable trying to sleep at night and, in short, Carl was experiencing excruciating pain 24 hours each and every day.

He was finally introduced to Dr. Ronald LaButti and scheduled to have knee replacement surgery on his left knee. After surgery, Carl immediately found himself anxious to get on the road to complete recovery. He actually pushed a little too hard and was cautioned to keep up the good work, but not to overdo it. Dr. LaButti had hoped for Carl to reach the optimistic point of 120 degrees of flexibility in his improving left knee and was elated when he reached 131 degrees. Carl worked hard during his therapy and surprised everyone with his astounding progress. Carl had dodged tackling stairs again after his surgery for fear the knee would buckle on him. To his amazement, the first time he tried a stairway, he had no problem with the ascent or the descent. He was able to start deer hunting again and recently laid the new wood flooring in his home. He has acquired his commercial driver’s license and is the go-to driver for his church. He drives for the pre-school, Seniors on the Go, various youth activities, Meals on Wheels, and as a member of the church’s tape ministry, delivers sermon tapes

and Sunday bulletins to shut-ins each week. Carl has also been recruited by several church members and friends and is now a beginner mason. “I just can’t tell you how much I admire and respect Dr. LaButti and his staff,” says Carl. “They all have such a caring attitude and make you feel special. Carla and I actually feel like we’re part of their family.” Carl and Dr. LaButti are scheduling surgery in the near future to replace Carl’s right knee. Carl’s words of advice to others experiencing pain from tired and worn-out knees is, “When it’s time, schedule the replacement surgery and get it done as soon as possible. Do exactly what the doctor and therapists tell you to do. And push yourself to your limits. You’ll enjoy the rewards.”

Robotic Assisted Total Knee Replacement Available exclusively with Dr. Ronald LaButti

This brand-new technology produces a 3-D image of the knee which allows for superior surgical accuracy and alignment. When compared to more traditional forms of navigation, the iBlock cutting guide provides a significant advantage not only for the surgeon, but for the patient as well. When a joint is replaced, even a miniscule misalignment between the implant and the bones can harm joint performance and longevity. This innovative technique allows for precise measurements made dynamically in real time. There are only five “iBlock” units in the United States, and this technology is available in Tulsa only with Dr. LaButti.

Working to Improve Lives Since 1927 W Goodwill Industries of Tulsa celebrates 85 years of giving back to Tulsa.

By Duane Blankenship Goodwill Industries of Tulsa has changed a lot over the past 85 years; headquarters have grown, as have their services. Goodwill reaches out with new programs and services, training facilities, and retail stores. But Goodwill’s mission has not changed in 85 years: they continue to promote and make possible for every individual the dignity and self-sufficiency that comes with employment. It all boils down to people working, lives improved. In 2011, Goodwill gave back to our community more than $79 million in economic and fiscal benefit. According to David Oliver, Goodwill president, “In 2012, we’ll continue to expand our services to individuals who need employment and companies who need workers.” On May 1, 2012, locals celebrated Goodwill’s 2011 award winners at their annual luncheon at the Southern Hills Marriott. Opening remarks and recognition of luncheon sponsors was made by Mark Bradshaw, evening news anchor of KTUL. Awards were presented by Goodwill’s Sabrina Ware and David Oliver. Community Partner honors went to Tulsa Transit. Presenter

Goodwill’s 2011 award winners included Brian Faust, Samuel Littles, and Jonathan Shacklett, shown with KTUL evening news anchor Mark Bradshaw (second from right). Sabrina Ware said they have been a great partner with Goodwill by hiring graduates that were prepared for working at Tulsa Transit, taking students on tours, and participating in mock interviews performed with students. Tulsa Transit has been sensitive to the transportation needs of Goodwill and what is important to the organization and students. Achiever of the Year was awarded to Samuel Littles. From early in life, Samuel faced huge

obstacles. He wasn’t diagnosed with a displaced hip until age 17. His mother died, and Samuel began treating his medical condition with alcohol. After entering Goodwill’s TulsaWORKS program in 2002, Sam still couldn’t hold down a job, mostly because of his drinking. He lost his sister and only remaining family member in 2011, but didn’t turn to alcohol. He continued his hardfought journey to sobriety and has now been sober for more than a year. In August, 2011,

Samuel was hired by Sam’s Club in Tulsa Hills, where he continues to work today. He is providing for himself and says, “It’s a pleasure working and winning as a team.” Sam has discovered the glory of rising after a fall. Jonathan Shacklett was honored as Employee of the Year and loves his job at the 38th and Harvard Goodwill Donation Center. Jon was born with Prader-Willi Syndrome, a complex genetic disorder that causes chronic hunger, rigid stubbornness, and other physical and intellectual limitations. It took a special job environment to allow Jon to succeed at work. Today, Jon helps new hires at the center learn their jobs and keeps his group on task. He has an ability to motivate others, a great sense of humor, and helps keep the work environment positive and fun, noted his job coach. Jon’s parents are proud of his hard work, which has given him the opportunity to earn a paycheck and live independently and provide for himself and his cats. Jon is a willing and able contributor to the Tulsa working community. Graduate of the Year honors went to Brian Faust. Brian came to Goodwill the summer of 2009

for transitional work adjustment training while getting ready for his senior year of high school. He needed to learn how to conduct himself at work. Doing everything he was asked to do, he still goofed around during work time. His program instructor helped Brian understand that “horseplay” was not appropriate in the workplace. In 2011, he started in the supported employment program and landed a lot attendant position at Home Depot. He now stays on task, has developed appropriate workplace relationships, loads customer orders, collects shopping carts, and helps stock lawn and garden supplies. He provides the high level of customer service his employer expects and has a bright future ahead of him. Congratulations to all the Goodwill award recipients!

In addition, many exhibitors offer thousands of TV, movie and music collectables for sale. Featured actresses and actors include: Jonathan Frakes (NCIS Los Angeles, Star Trek: The Next Generation), LeVar Burton (How I Met Your Mother, Star Trek: The Next Generation), Rachel Luttrel (NCIS, Stargate Atlantis), Julie Caitlin Brown (Law and Order: Criminal Intent, Babylon 5), Richard Hatch (The Little Matchmakers, Battlestar Galactica), and Garrett Wang (Why Am I Doing This, Star Trek: Voyager). More guests will be announced soon. “Supper With The Stars” will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. Most of the celebrities participate, chatting with and often dancing with those attending. Advance or at-the-door tickets for the Supper are $10, which will be donated to Tulsa Boys’ Home. The Beachwoods Restaurant at Wyndham will

RRepair Facility of the Year Bill Knight Collision Repair received the national award from Farmers Insurance for the second year in a row. By Duane Blankenship Bill Knight Collision Repair received the Farmers Insurance Circle of Dependability/Eastern Division Repair Facility of the Year Award in 2010, and again in 2011. Winning the coveted award once is a great honor. Winning it two years in a row is unprecedented. Bill Knight is quick to praise his entire Bill Knight Collision Repair organization for the role each individual played in their selection to receive the award. “From our administrative staff to the technicians who performed the repairs,” said Knight, “all made positive contributions that played a part in our being selected.” The award was for Farmers’ Eastern Division of the United States, which encompasses every state from Oklahoma north, south, and east to the coastline. The selection was made from a total of 2,700 collision repair centers spread across the eastern half of the United States. Together, Knight and his collision repair team celebrated receiving the award at a luncheon as the award was presented by Farmers representatives. The winning selection was

Our parts department has always embraced our Collision Repair Center, and this is just one of the reasons we’ve grown from one location to three in just three years.” Farmers Insurance, Bill Knight Collision Repair, and their customers want each vehicle to move quickly through the shop without sacrificing any repair quality. “When a Farmers customer brings a vehicle to us for repair, they’re treated just like we treat our own customers when they come in to buy a car, obtain recommended services, or need collision repairs,” said Knight. “Our entire staff treats customers the way each of us wants to be treated by others.” It’s no wonder they have been selected to receive the Circle of Dependability Repair Facility of the Year Award two years running. Bill Knight Automotive conducts an annual campaign supporting DVIS (Domestic Violence Intervention Services) in the Tulsa area. In 2011, they

Page 19

asked Farmers to join them in the project of refurbishing a van to be given to the DVIS shelter. All Farmers agents statewide participated in the project. The van was reconditioned to likenew condition and filled with toys, cooking and cleaning supplies, and other items needed at DVIS shelters. “Farmers and Bill Knight Automotive have had a long-term, successful business relationship that paved the way to our jointly giving something back to the Tulsa area,” said Kevin Davis. “Farmers was overwhelmed by just how great an experience it was for our organization, encompassing all employees and agents.” Kevin is the life and financial specialist in the Farmers Insurance Oklahoma state office. Bill Knight Collision Repair works on all makes and models of vehicles, and the Bill Knight organization cherishes the long-term trust they have built with customers. That same trust has built a fabric of great relationships. Like Bill Knight says in his advertising campaign, “Go to the name you can trust.”

UUltimate Garage Door Opener Control your garage door anytime, from anywhere. By Duane Blankenship Assurance Overhead Doors is an authorized dealer for LiftMaster® and the new Elite SeriesTM 8550 Garage Door Opener. “The 8550,” says Chuck Billy of Assurance, “has a DC battery backup with belt drive. It runs so quietly you can hardly hear it, much like a hybrid vehicle.” Chuck highly recommends the new Elite Series because of its state-of-theart quality and all the features and benefits built into the revolutionary design. This garage door opener seems to be in a class all its own. You get in your garage every time, even when the power is out, because the 8550 has a battery backup system to ensure that your garage door opener and all the safety and security features continue to work when electricity fails. The Elite Series also has a timer-to-close feature that makes sure the door automatically closes after a pre-programmed number of minutes, from one to 99, determined by you. The unit’s energy-efficient operation consumes up to 75 percent less power in standby mode, according to the manufacturer. Another great feature of the

Chuck Billy of Assurance Overhead Doors demonstrates how the new LiftMaster® Elite SeriesTM garage door opener allows monitoring and operation of your garage door from anywhere via your smartphone or computer. 8550 is that it is maintenancefree. The unit is driven by a powerful DC motor belt drive system that is durable and ultra-quiet. The unit provides lighting to your entire garage

with its dual-side, 100-watt CFL (compact fluorescent light bulb) compatible design. The new LiftMaster Elite Series 8550’s basic package includes built-in MyQTM

technology, enabling you to control and operate your garage door anytime, from anywhere with a smartphone or computer that allows Internet access. This product is designed for how you live. You can pair the LiftMaster 8550 and built-in MyQ technology with other accessories, so you can monitor and control your garage door and house lights with one click on your computer or smartphone from anywhere in the world. Exclusive Security+2.0TM technology used in the LiftMaster’s garage door opener remote control provides extra peace of mind for you and your family. Rolling code technology uses a new code at every click, making it virtually impossible for anyone to steal your remote control signal. The intuitive menu-driven Smart Control Panel® provides complete control of your garage door opener. It displays the current temperature, time, and system diagnostics. A three-button premium remote control is also part of the basic package and allows you to control up to three garage door openers, devices, or MyQ enabled lights. It is compatible with all garage door openers manufacturer by LiftMaster

since January of 1993. LiftMaster can make your home safer and more responsive to how you live with its unmatched communication, safety and security. Safety sensors project an invisible light beam across the garage door opening and automatically reverse the door if anything interrupts the beam while the door is closing. Garage door opener lights turn on automatically when the infrared beam is broken. And the system has a patented locking system that ensures the door remains securely locked when it is closed. There are several optional accessories that enable you to tap into even more features for maximum confidence, communication and compatibility. The new Elite Series also has a lifetime motor and belt warranty, fiveyear parts warranty, and one-year warranty on the EverCharge Standby Power System. Estimates are always free, and operating hours for Assurance are 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Call Chuck Billy to schedule a meeting or visit Assurance Overhead Doors online for more information about the new LiftMaster Elite Series 8550.

RRock A Wish The Rock A Wish Concert & Car Show benefitting the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Oklahoma will take place Saturday, June 30 at the SpiritBank Event Center. By Sheryl Sowell For a full day of fun while supporting a worthy cause, mark your calendar for Saturday, June 30, 2012. The inaugural Rock A Wish Concert & Car Show will be held from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. at the SpiritBank Event Center. Festivities will include a car show, exhibit booths, concessions and live music throughout the day, as well hourly door prizes and a silent auction. All proceeds will benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation®. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Kids 12 and under are admitted free with adult admission. Angela and Chris Glidden spearheaded Rock A Wish. Their company, Everything Events, coordinates several charitable events each year. Recently one of their clients wanted to host an event that would make a difference in people’s lives, but could not decide which organization to benefit. Angela and Chris suggested the Make-A-Wish Foundation®, because Angela has had firsthand experience with this wonderful organization. Their son Brandon, who has

Chris and Angela Glidden invite you to Rock A Wish at the SpiritBank Event Center. cerebral palsy, was granted a wish five years ago. Brandon’s biggest dream was to go to WrestleMania. Make-A-Wish

sent Brandon and Angela, along with 50 other kids and their families from around the United States who had made the same

wish. “People tend to stare at children with disabilities,” says Angela. “But everyone we met was so wonderful and made Brandon feel just like a regular kid. The experience was so positive and really encouraged us to help other kids have their wishes granted.” The Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Oklahoma grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. The cost is approximately $7,000 to grant one wish, and currently 150 children in Oklahoma are waiting for their wish to be granted. Since being founded in 1987, our state chapter has granted more than 1,900 wishes to eligible Oklahoma children. Rock A Wish will feature a full entertainment roster throughout the day. The evening headliners are Dressed to Kill, a Kiss tribute band, and Billion Dollar Koopers, a tribute to Alice Cooper. Other musical acts include The Danny Baker Band, Under the Gun, The Moving Company, Tulsa’s Cold Case, Sweatin’ Bullets, STUN, and Octane Blue. “All of the bands have donated their time and talents to support the event,” adds Chris. You’ll also see some of Oklahoma’s most incredible classic and muscle cars, as well as a variety of exhibit booths. Local celebrities will judge the cars and award trophies, and attendees can vote on their favorite vehicle

for People’s Choice. Other fun activities on the lineup include a rock star lookalike contest and an air guitar competition. You may even walk out of Rock A Wish with more than you go in with. Hourly door prizes will consist of great items donated by local businesses, including memorabilia from Carroll Shelby, creator of the Shelby Mustang. Make-A-Wish is also holding a raffle for the chance to win a 2013 Lexus ES 350. The silent auction opens at 10 a.m., and winners of the items, such as trips and furniture from Mathis Brothers, will be announced at 6 p.m. Sponsors of Rock A Wish include Williams, Dave & Buster’s, Liberty Mutual, Tulsa Night Out, Monster Energy Drinks, Smashburger, Mathis Brothers, and Texas Roadhouse. To purchase tickets, visit www.rockawish.com or stop by the SpiritBank Event Center at 105th and Memorial. Angela and Chris hope to make this an annual event and help grant as many wishes as possible to Oklahoma children. Come out and “Rock a Wish” on Saturday, June 30 for a great time and to support an incredible organization that changes young lives.

Ponder the Beauty even as far away as Adair,” says Melanie Allen, president of GCWGS. “We have decided to spread out from Tulsa and really live up to the name ‘Green Country.’” Displayed on the tour are some of Green Country’s loveliest backyard water gardens and ponds in all kinds of arrangements, from gentle brooks to plunging waterfalls. In the last two decades, landscapers and water garden enthusiasts have made great strides in water garden development, and this will be evident to those who view the intricate rock designs and water filtration systems along the tour. These ponds are not only set up to be pleasing to the eye and create a relaxing atmosphere, but to provide a natural habitat for fish and birds as well. A plethora of water-friendly plants and flowers surround and fill the ponds, completing the natural effect. And just as in nature, each pond is unique, as the pond owner has designed it according to his or her own imagination and taste. “Through this tour, GCWGS provides the opportunity for interested parties to share ideas and experiences, successes and pitfalls relating to the care and enjoyment of ponds,” says Jody Porter, a member of GCWGS and owner of Hardscape Materials Outdoor Living Center, along with her husband Brad. “People can learn about aquatic plants

and fish while enjoying ponds built by both weekend warriors and professional pond builders.” Hardscape is the presenting sponsor of the Green Country Water Garden Society Pond Tour, with other major sponsors including Anderson Pond Design and BZT Pond and Koi Products. Tickets for the pond tour are $5 and are available at Hardscape Materials, Southern Agriculture, and on the Green Country Water Garden Society website, www.gcwgs.com. Tickets will also be available at tour homes. In years past, GCWGS has provided a magazine filled with information about the different ponds and about water gardening in general, and this year’s magazine will be the actual ticket for the event, gaining the holder entrance into any of the ponds on the tour. Also new this year: Jody Porter has set up a GPS routing system with all of the tour home locations. To obtain information about this, email Jody at jody@hardscapematerials.com. The Green Country Water Garden Society is dedicated to educating Green Country about the how-to’s – and resulting joys – of water gardening. This nonprofit society meets the second Tuesday of every month at the Tulsa Garden Center at 2435 S. Peoria and is a supporter of the Linnaeus Teaching Garden. Another main focus of the club

to run for the Republican candidacy. “I also sensed an urgency to have conservative, Christian Republicans in office,” she says. Robin is treasurer of the Rogers County Republican Women’s Club. To sum up one of her driving philosophies in life, Robin quotes a very famous Republican leader, former President Ronald Reagan: “I know in my heart that man is good. That what is right will eventually triumph, and there’s purpose and worth to each and every life.”

W Wedding Planning Can Be Merry Weddings of Tulsa assists brides in every aspect to ensure an unforgettable, stress-free wedding. By Duane Blankenship John Bunn attended Oral Roberts University, studying advertising and marketing. He had a passion for multimedia, became an experienced videographer, began shooting weddings for friends, and ultimately transformed his passion into a full-blown business. He is the owner of Redeemed Productions and has recently started a second business, Weddings of Tulsa, located at 81st and Harvard. John recognizes that today’s brides are smart consumers. With the availability of the Internet, they have done their homework and have conceptualized what they want their weddings to be – and not be – when they meet with John. Through Weddings of Tulsa, John has taken the wedding planning process to the next dimension with a focus on the bride. “Brides are able to visit us and receive professional assistance in planning their weddings, seven days a week,” he says. Seventy-five of the Tulsa area’s best wedding vendors have exhibits at Weddings of Tulsa featuring available products and services. Examples of the types

Weddings of Tulsa owner John Bunn has taken wedding planning to the next dimension and simplified it for the bride. of vendors include bakers, florists, deejays, bands, videographers, honeymoon services, and much more. In addition, Weddings of Tulsa will schedule evening

events including Taste the Cake, Meet the Photographer, Smell the Flowers, and other topics designed to assist in the wedding planning process. A conference room is available for brides to

meet individual suppliers and ask questions about specific products, services and costs. Two hostesses are on duty during store hours to answer questions and offer suggestions that will comply with any wedding budget. “Once we know the wedding date,” says John, “we can confer with the selected vendor to see if they are available that date and relay information back to the bride.” When a particular vendor has been selected, Weddings of Tulsa sets up a meeting at the store between the vendor and the bride. After the bride has determined all the vendors she wants to do her wedding, Weddings of Tulsa will present an invoice for the pre-agreed total amount. Twenty-five percent of the total wedding cost is made at the signing of the vendor contracts (which will be done at one time at Weddings of Tulsa), and the bride has up to as many as five months to pay the total invoice. The entire amount must be paid in advance of the wedding day. Checks are made payable to Weddings of Tulsa, who then pays each vendor. This

eliminates a lot of check writing for the bride. Weddings of Tulsa will host two bridal shows a year at the Mabee Center. A show is scheduled for Sunday, July 15, 2012 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., where one local bride will win a wedding package of her dreams that won’t cost her a dime. Ten brides’ names will be drawn from those registered. These ten will participate in the Merritt’s Bakery Cake Dive, and one bride will win the grand prize wedding package worth an estimated $15,000. Visit www.weddingsoftulsa.com for more details. If you or someone you know is getting married in the Tulsa area, visit the Weddings of Tulsa blog for planning tips, special announcements, giveaways, additional information, and sponsored bridal shows. Watch for the grand opening celebration of Weddings of Tulsa this summer. The store will, in essence, provide a bridal show open daily to assist brides with wedding planning.
