Kershaw’s fervor for Cajun culture and entertaining with this rhythmic music has garnered him a decades long career, honors, awards, and attention of the most popular artists of the day. As a lauded singer/fiddler/songwriter, Doug Kershaw took Cajun music to the world with his hits including Louisiana Man, Diggy Diggy Lo, and Cajun Baby. For his music and his ambassadorship of Cajun culture, Doug was inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame in 2009. He was inducted into the National Fiddler Hall of Fame in 2016. Kershaw is a unique and interesting character, born in a small community called Tiel Ridge in Cameron Parish, Louisiana, he did not learn English until the age of eight. By that time, he had mastered the fiddle, which he played from the age of five, and was on his way to teaching himself to play 28 instruments. He grew up surrounded by Cajun fiddle and accordion music, and became interested in Cajun music during parties his parents would host on the family’s houseboat in Louisiana, where he first heard Cajun bands playing. He began his career with his brother Rusty as the duo, Rusty and Doug, originally singing in French. Then with an early hit in English “So Lovely Baby”, they appeared on the Louisiana Hayride, the Wheeling West Virginia Jamboree, and became regular members of the Grand Ole Opry. Kershaw has had an extensive solo career that includes fifteen albums and singles that charted on the Hot Country Songs charts. Chris Miller and Bayou Roots, invited back by popular demand, honor the roots

of Cajun music’s tradition by extending the reach of new and creative musical branches. This group is fun and they are good! Led by Chris Miller on vocals, accordion, fiddle, keys, and harmonica, they provide a musical adventure that can take some very exciting and surprising turns. Dancers will gather on the dance floor to dance to the vibrant beat of the Cajun music. Clint Walker, vocalist, musician and songwriter will change the pace when he hits the stage with his own vocal style, hits, and original tunes. Enjoy the entertainment while shopping with the Arts and Crafts Vendors and enjoying delicious Cajun food served at noon which will include some of your Cajun favorites. The public is invited to enjoy this event brought to the Grand Lake area by Grand Lake Festivals, Inc. and Jana Jae, founder of Grand Lake Festivals with the assistance of Cherokee Nation Businesses, Oklahoma Arts Council, National Endowment of the Arts, Grove Area Chamber of Commerce, Oklahoma Film and Music and local and area sponsors including the City of Grove. This will be a family experience— delicious food, wonderful entertainment and a great opportunity to shop with the talented artists and crafters selling their work at the various booths. Bring the family and enjoy the whole day on July 4 for $5 admission for adults, children under 12 years of age free. Call 918-786-8896 or visit grandlakefestivals.com for additional information.

HOW TO
STRETCH Your Money
REDUCE
REUSE
RETHINK
It’s a good habit to annually review your monthly expenses, looking for areas where you can cut costs. Start by discontinuing unused memberships/subscriptions.
Use less. Save more. An easy start is to ditch disposable items. Clean with rags rather than paper towels or cleaning wipes. Use reusable water bottles and dishes instead of buying bottled water and paper plates.
Rethink your purchase decisions. Start by making a list and sticking to it. Consider paying with cash. And bring only the cash you need, so you’re not tempted to splurge.
Expenses
Call your cable, phone and insurance companies and ask for options to reduce your bill. Compare prices of other companies or consider alternatives like pre-paid phones or streaming services. Reduce utility expenses by adjusting your thermostat a few degrees. Unplug electrical items when not in use and reduce the number of days you water the lawn.
Stuff
Look for creative ways to repurpose common household items. Save glass jelly jars or clear plastic containers to organize your kitchen, office or craft room items. Cut up your old t-shirts for cleaning rags. Grab those Easter eggs and use them as handy snack containers. Find more moneysaving ideas online.
Invest in yourself. RCBbank.com/GetFit

ulsa Home Shows invites all Tulsa area residents to come celebrate with them at their fifth Annual Spring Home & Outdoor Living Expo. The event was necessarily rescheduled from the traditional late April dates to June 19-21 due to the historic COVID-19 virus. When the show opens Friday, June 19, it will become the first public event at River Spirit Expo at Expo Square after the facility was forced to shut down on March 14. That shutdown created a premature end to the Greater Tulsa Home & Garden Show. So, it’s only fitting that the first event back at the facility is a home and garden show.

Gleamed of. “I love to show people how they can save money and still have beautiful wood finishes that almost look new,” he said. “Many people believe that all wood refinishing is messy and that remodelers always take longer. Gleam Guard is completely different.” Gleam Guard’s technique employs professional craftsmen to refinish cabinets with greater benefits compared to complete kitchen remodeling. Their process accomplishes refinished woodwork without much sanding and toxic fumes and can be done with a day or two, with minimal dust. Cabinets will not need to be emptied to complete the work, saving even more time. “All you need to do is open the door and let us in to work in your kitchen,” said Tracy. “In other words, no prep is needed, such as removing hardware, covering furniture or anything else – we take care of all of it.” The breakthrough technology they use restores lasting beauty to cabinets and other interior woodwork. The application bonds
to the original finish, enhancing the wood grain and giving it a fresh-oiled look, however, unlike oiled methods, the results will last for decades. “Sometimes people think I am going to make everything look shiny,” Tracy said, “but there are actually three sheens to choose from – satin, semi-gloss

This process works not only on traditional wood surfaces but on painted, glazed and pickled woods as well. Gleam Guard can be used on new or old cabinets, and keeping the new finish is as easy as wiping with a damp cloth. A bit of vinegar is all you need for stubborn spots. Project completion time is a top priority for Tracy and Gleam Guard craftsmen. Each project is worked on one a time, to ensure quality and reliability. Honesty and integrity are at the base of all of the work with Tracy and his crew of professionals. Buildings Built to Last
BY DUANE BLANKENSHIP
I
nola Portable Buildings & Pole Barns owner Carl Parson built carports, buildings and pole barns for the past 21 years. His business has been located just east of Inola on the north side of Highway 412 since its inception. Carl has been in the construction business for 43 years, starting with the construction department with the State of Oklahoma when he was still a very young man. Carl is assisted in the business today by his son-in-law, Cassidy Benner. Inola Portable Buildings & Pole Barns always has more than 50 displays on their lot, affording customers a plethora of ideas to choose from. You will see portable buildings used as storage sheds, lawn equipment storage areas, pool-side bath houses, workshops, and even cute little cottages for when you’re getting away for a quiet weekend. There are standard plans and models to choose from, or you may do a little or a lot of customizing to any basic style that catches your eye. You may also
opt to have your project built on site, or Inola Portable Buildings will build and deliver it to you. It’s your choice, and the cost is the same either way. You’ll find 10 different Eagle Carports displayed on the Inola Portable Buildings lot. Examples include standard carports, combo carports with storage areas, garages and barns. All metal construction is of either 14- or 12-gauge steel. A 20-year limited warranty is provided on roofing materials for both gauge units, and there are 13 colors options. “All wood beneath the floor, including floor joists and skids, is treated lumber. Floors joists and wall studs are placed on 16-inch centers.” You can compare metal and wood pole barns on display at the show lot. Smart Panel Siding and Smart Trim are used in the manufacturing of most of the portable buildings made by Carl’s company, and they both carry a 25-year factory warranty. Both
products are made by Louisiana Pacific and are insect and termite resistant. Forty-year treated skids are standard, as is three-quarterinch tongue and groove flooring. You have the option of single or double doors. All studs are stud grade, 30-pound felt paper (a vapor barrier) is placed between the roof and shingles, and 30-year Heritage Shingles are standard. Metal drip edges are also standard on roofs. Metal roofs are optional and offer a choice of 16 colors along with a limited lifetime warranty. “We sell the best carports, the best portable buildings, and the best pole barns available,” says Carl. “If you check us out with the Better Business Bureau, you’ll find that we’ve never had a complaint filed against us.” In this day and age, that’s pretty remarkable. You can see quality samples of all the products built and offered by Inola Portable Buildings & Pole Barns at the Tulsa State Fair, the Tulsa Home Builders Home & Garden Show, and the House Beautiful Show, all held each year at Tulsa’s Expo Square. Check online at www. inolaportablebuildings.com to see the full assortment of quality products and services offered by Inola Portable Buildings & Pole Barns. Or call or stop by and visit the show lot. Carl will be waiting for you to answer your questions and give you a guided tour around the outdoor showroom.

hen Marcus was seven years old, he used bricks as weights to train and build muscles. He frequented his Grandmother’s yard to run a line of equally-spaced hedges. His first strength, speed and agility training! “I knew I was a pretty good athlete as a kid,” says Marcus, “but most of the guys I grew up with were also pretty good. I was competitive, but I didn’t really consider myself exceptional until much later. I didn’t want my mom to have to pay for my college education so I worked really hard to get a football scholarship to pay for it. I’ve always tried to be the best I can be.” Marcus Dupree grew up in Philadelphia, Mississippi, and played football for the Philadelphia High School Tornadoes where his spectacular play earned national recognition and admiration. Although Dupree was big at 6’ 2”, 225 lbs., he was deceptively fast, agile and
tough. He was one of the most highly recruited high school football players in the history of American football. During his senior year, Marcus became a magnet that attracted interest from every major college football program in the nation. His gridiron accomplishments inspired Willie Morris, a southern author, to write a book about Dupree’s nationally publicized college recruitment titled The Courting of Marcus Dupree. “A second human interest book is now in progress,” says Marcus. “It’s about growing up in Philadelphia and includes the good, the bad and the ugly aspects of my life. It should be released in the not-too-distant future.” During his 1979 freshman year for the Tornadoes, Dupree’s honors included Best Offensive Player, Most Valuable Player and Player of the Year in the Mid-Mississippi Conference. In four seasons with the Tornadoes, he scored 87 touchdowns breaking Herschel
Walker’s high school record of 86. Dupree committed to the University of Oklahoma in 1982 and played his freshman season and part of the ‘83-’84 season for Barry Switzer. He won the Big 8 Newcomer of the Year Award, was named to AP’s All-Big Eight First Team and UPI placed him on their All-Big Eight Second Team. Marcus was featured on a Sports Illustrated cover in 1983 and his incredible running abilities were often the topic of national news broadcasts. His elusiveness persuaded Switzer and the Oklahoma coaching staff to successfully change their offensive strategy to the “I” formation to maximize Dupree’s effectiveness. Oklahoma played Arizona State in the Fiesta Bowl on January 1, 1983. Although playing only a little more than half the game because of four injuries, Dupree set a Fiesta Bowl rushing record of 239 yards and was named MVP. Marcus left the University of

Oklahoma in 1983 immediately after the OU v Texas game planning to transfer to Southern Miss, but learned he would have to sit out for two years. He never donned a Golden Eagle uniform. Dupree joined the newly formed USFL New Orleans Breakers in 1984. Although gaining 684 yards on

While spending an unprecedented five and a half years away from professional football, his will, determination, work ethic and passion for the game were catalysts to recondition and earn a tryout with the Los Angeles Rams. In 1990 he made the team and was named Comeback Player of the Year. He was, however, released by the Rams after a respectable sophomore season. Dupree first suffered a hamstring injury while running high school track. “That’s the injury that eventually forced me out of football,” he said. “When I recovered from the anesthesia after my injury and surgery while with the Breakers, I looked

up at my Mom. I then looked down at my knee and, literally, tore the cast off. My dreams were over.” So, what is Marcus Dupree doing now? He’s a highly successful businessman with interests in many areas. He is Co-Founder & CEO of Marcus Dupree MVP College Recruiting & Consulting. He is also a motivational and inspirational speaker. ESPN filmed and aired a highly acclaimed documentary in 2010 about Dupree’s football career. The documentary reflects Dupree’s integrity and character throughout his career and how his winning attitude has helped him cope with life after football. ESPN’s The Best That Never Was aired in 2010 on 30 for 30. “My phone immediately began ringing,” says Marcus. “People wanted to hear my story. That was the beginning of my speaking business. Instead of dwelling on loss, I’ve come to realize that patience is a process. Today I’m appreciative of the lessons I’ve learned and am aware that future opportunities must not be squandered.” Marcus makes personal appearances at corporate events, gives inspirational speeches to a broad range of audiences and was recently a national spokesperson for Novo Nordisk. He has appeared in regional commercials including
Hyundai and was cast in a 2017 feature film, One Mile to You. Marcus Dupree MVP College Recruiting & Consulting is dedicated to help guide and educate high school student athletes playing football and other sports. “Many of these athletes are flying under the radar,” says Marcus. “We help them (and their families) travel through the college recruiting process with confidence and a peace of mind.” The program is unique and is designed to personalize the process based on athletic and academic needs of each student athlete. “We help assure that they get the exposure they need with college coaches who will, hopefully, want them in their sports programs.” The Mission of Marcus Dupree MVP College Recruiting & Consulting is to make sure that all high school student athletes who want to play the sport they love at the collegiate level are able to do so at a school of their choosing. “We get to know our student athletes and their families on a personal level,” added Dupree. “We develop a comprehensive, step-by-step recruiting game plan for each student athlete in order to achieve his/her ultimate goals. We are NCAA and NAIA compliant.” The former football recruit and star

Call for Mural Artists Historic Mural Project Deadline Extended to August 28, 2020 BY JULIE BROWN
T
he Museum Broken Arrow announced today it is extending the proposal deadline for their public art mural project, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Mural artists are still encouraged to submit a proposal for this large-scale work of art to be displayed in downtown Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, on the south exterior museum wall. This project is sponsored and funded by The Museum Broken Arrow and grants received on behalf of several organizations. Artists can email jbrown@brokenarrowmuseum.org with any questions regarding mural submissions. “We understand that many artists
have been dealing with other priorities since COVID-19 struck our nation. This is why we felt it necessary to extend the proposal deadline for our mural project. This project is not only in line with our mission, but it will also serve as a sign to our community that Broken Arrow is united and looking forward to the future. We hope everyone continues to stay safe and take advantage of the museum worlds’ extensive social media outlets. Art educates and inspires, especially during times like these.” said Brown, The Museum BA Executive Director. The Museum Broken Arrow is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization located
in historic downtown Broken Arrow. In addition to showcasing local history, the Museum also offers events, educational opportunities and facility rental. The Museum’s June COVID-19 temporary hours are Tuesday and Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and by appointment. For more information, call (918)258-2616 or visit BrokenArrowMuseum.org.

Whatis permaseal? I
’m sure you’ve heard the Will Rogers quote, “If you don’t like the weather in Oklahoma, wait a minute and it’ll change.” While that’s great for those of us who are easily bored with dreary skies, it’s not as good for the concrete and wood that surrounds our homes. But you can’t change the weather, so what can you do? PermaSeal has the solution! What exactly is PermaSeal? It’s much more than a protective topcoat. Simply put, PermaSeal is a product that restores concrete

and wood. The benefits are endless. It not only refurbishes wood and concrete, but makes them 23% stronger, and applies a waterproof sealant. Further decay and rot are no longer a concern once PermaSeal has been applied. PermaSeal can be used on new concrete and wood structures or existing ones as well. PermaSeal has worked on driveways that have years of damage from salt and sand from winters and by the time PermaSeal is applied, they look nearly new. It’s an amazing

product. Driveways, fences, decks, pergolas, gazebos and boat decks and slips are just a few of the investments PermaSeal can protect. But, one item people may not think of are their saltwater pools. Salt naturally eats away at nearly everything, so we can protect your backyard oasis too. Another beaming review by Gene and Debbie of St. Louis quoted, “I would like to take this opportunity to let you know that our cedar deck looks just like new. The deck was only 3 years old
surfaces simply need to be rinsed or lightly power washed. Use your time to enjoy your home instead of worrying about constant upkeep. In a testimonial by Ed and Jenny W. of O’Fallon, Missouri, the satisfied customers noted, “We built our house three years ago including the cedar deck, as soon as we moved in we stained the deck and it looked great.
BEFORE but had a lot of wear on all the horizontal boards. Your crew was able to clean the deck and bring the cedar look back to its original state. I have noticed that the sealer you applied has made the wood harder, and it actually feels more dense.” In addition to PermaSeal’s phenomenal product, another important aspect to their brand is their attentiveness and care they maintain toward their customers. A review left by Rachael Jurgena stated, “The PermaSeal team was fantastic from the start! From calling in to make an appointment, to them coming out to do the job. They were kind, knowledgeable and hardworking! Always great to answer any questions we had along the way!” Of course, it doesn’t hurt that PermaSeal also makes maintenance much easier. Treated
AFTER
“The PermaSeal team was fantastic from the start! From calling in to make an appointment, to them coming out to do the job. They were kind, knowledgeable and hardworking!” Unfortunately, it only looked good for about six months. We knew we had to do something to protect our investment, and we weren’t excited about the prospect of
having to stain it to maintain it. Thank goodness for PermaSeal, your team came out and permanently sealed the deck. Now it looks just like the day we moved in. Cleaning it is a breeze, no need to power wash it, simply hose it down. We can highly recommend PermaSeal to everyone that is looking for peace of mind!” The fact that the company stands behind its product speaks volumes. Each application has a 25-year transferable warranty. If you visit their Facebook page (www. facebook.com/permasealusaLLC), you can view before and after pictures as well as videos of the process so you can see for yourself what an invaluable asset this would be to your home. You can also get more information on their website or call them for your free estimate.

A Father’s Day To Celebrate BY SHANNON SMITH
38 |
VALUE NEWS OWASSO & COLLINSVILLE JUNE 2020 WWW.VALUENEWS.COM
J
une is one of my favorite months of the year. I was born on June first, which means I get to celebrate the entire month. And, I get to celebrate Father’s Day, which is even more meaningful to me this year. My father is 79 years old, and he was one of the first to contract COVID-19 in Oklahoma. He lives alone, and was convinced he didn’t have the virus, but after a lot of prodding from my sisters and I, he went to the hospital in Norman and tested positive for the virus and pneumonia. After six days in the hospital he got to go home, and three weeks later he got on his bicycle and rode 25 miles. He felt so good, he rode again the next day, and the next. My dad has been bicycling for nearly thirty years, and his goal each year is to ride the total miles of the number of that year. So, this year he will ride 2,020 miles. Nearly every year he drives to Wichita Falls to ride
in the Hotter’N Hell Hundred, where he usually finishes the hundred mile ride with a few of his buddies. I didn’t acquire my dad’s love for bicycling, but I did learn the importance of physical fitness and setting goals. He and my mom were married for fifty years before my mom passed away, and although he misses her dearly, he continues to live a very productive life. He has more friends than most men I know, which was proven with all the calls and texts during his illness. He has a sense of humor that everyone loves, even though he tends to tell a few of the same jokes over and over. They’re still funny each time because it’s clear he gets so much joy from telling them. One thing I did learn from him was how to grill a steak. He mixed a concoction of sauces and spices to marinate the meat before they hit the grill. Then he poked them with
a long fork until he deemed them perfectly done. My mom, however, would ask him every time, “Did you cook them long enough?” She was terrified of undercooked meat, and if the steaks were a little pink, they were not cooked long enough. Back then, I didn’t know that steak was supposed to be pink, and now I wouldn’t eat it any other way. This Father’s Day will be extra special in my family as we celebrate the man who survived a terrible virus and recovered remarkably well. He’s still telling the same jokes, and we’re still laughing at them. But maybe this year we’ll laugh a little bit longer. If you’re firing up the grill, try my own concoction for saucing up a steak.

Salsa Verde Makes 1 Cup - There are a lot of variations for Salsa Verde, and this is one of my favorites. In the summer when I have an abundance of fresh mint I add it to the mix. If you’re in a hurry you can make the salsa in a food processor, but just pulse it so it doesn’t become smooth. My favorite way to use this sauce is on a grilled steak, but it’s delicious on fish. Serve it with fried potatoes and some grilled tomatoes and onions for a beautiful plate of colorful goodness! • • • •
1 shallot, minced 1 garlic clove, minced Juice of one lime 1/2 cup fresh parsley leaves, finely chopped • 1/2 cup fresh cilantro leaves, finely chopped
• 1 stalk celery, minced (including leaves) • 1 small tomatillo, minced • 1 tbsp. capers, minced • 2 tbsp. olive oil • Salt and pepper
In a bowl, whisk together all the ingredients, adding salt and pepper to taste. Alternatively, if you don’t want to finely chop all the ingredients, put coarsely chopped ingredients into a food processor and pulse until a thick sauce develops.
