Photography Basics BY CHRIS PUTMAN
A
s the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words. If that is true that picture better be a doozie, and quality photography doesn’t usually come without some seasoned skill. Most rookie shutterbugs fall in love with their own pictures and brag how they captured the most stunning expression on their subject’s face, but they are blind to the fact there is a flagpole in the background that looks like it is protruding out of their subject’s head. Many novices think they have captured the best landscape photo with brilliantly colored field flowers with snowcapped mountains framing the shot, but they didn’t notice that there is an overflowing trash can in the foreground that could have easily been framed out if they had just slowed down and did a check of each element within the frame. Yes, these greenhorns think their photos are stellar, but if their work is critiqued by a pro, usually there are distracting elements caught in the shot that could have been easily avoided. Now, this article is written not with expensive equipment in mind. What the reader will learn is how to capture the image either by a camera or a phone camera. Photos can be breathtaking simply by their composition, not by the quality or exorbitant cost of the equipment used. So, what are some tips that can help a beginner take photos like a pro? Here’s a checklist: 1. Use the rule of thirds. Beginning photographers innately want to put the subject of the photo in

Anything in art such as painting, sketches or Rule of thirds. photography looks much more stimulating to the brain if the subject is placed on Centered tree - just OK. the third line. What third line? Many cameras or phone cameras have a grid that can Tree on third lines – much better. be selected so the third lines are in place when looking through the frame to take the shot. Place the subject at the intersection of the third line. No grid? No problem. Just mentally divide the viewfinder into thirds and place the subject as shown below. 2. Look around at the elements captured in the frame. Novices focus their attention on their subject but miss the element in the shot that will cause them regret after that special moment passes never to be captured again. Look for overlooked distracting elements. In the example photo, the girl is framed correctly on the thirds line. A secondary element is also included, the pots of flowers,

and even placed on the opposite third line, but because the photographer was mentally Watch for distracting focusing on elements. these rules, he/she didn’t notice the telephone pole that appears to be growing from the subject’s head. Objects look more attractive if taken on an angle rather than standing square in front of them. Take real estate, for instance. Most photographers know that if a photo is taken directly in front of a house or building, it will look flat. The building will look much more attractive, Building looking flat . however, if the photographer simply walks around the corner of the building to Building shot on catch two sides. an angle. The building has dimension while appearing larger and more attractive. 3. Take photos of people using the same principles as with buildings. Capturing an angle provides a more flattering look. When a subject looks directly into a camera, their face flattens out. That’s why people hate their driver’s license photo or work I.D. pictures – the worst pose is captured – but a portrait Photo of flat face. photographer knows the tip of providing depth to their face. Have the subject turn their head slightly. Perfect. Photo of angled face.
Now shoot. 4. Look around to find a natural element to frame the Framing subject subject within from below. that visual enclosure. For example, use branches to frame the subject. Perhaps tall Framing from the side. grass is the perfect element; lay down and shoot through the blades. 5. Viewers look at pictures Framing around the subject. sequentially. That means they take in elements one at a time while their eyes move around the image. Photographers can take photos that purposely plan where the viewers’ eyes move. One way to do that is to use a technique called leading lines. Use an element that provides a line – a railroad track, a path, a road or a fence Leading lines line – to guide to subject. the viewers’ eyes to the focal point. Don’t leave them with leading lines only that line is like the bridge that leads to nowhere. Instead place the subject, the focal point, at the end of the leading lines. 6. The most engaging photo technique of all is stop action. Sports photos are often stop-action photos. Remember opening a newspaper to the sports section and seeing a basketball Capture action as it happens . player
jumping to shoot a hoop and the player was captured in midair? How about a baseball player taking a swing and the photographer caught an image of the ball leaving the bat? Care must be taken so that these photos are not ruined by the blur of the action. If a camera is not fast enough to stop this action, better leave this one alone. 7. Lastly, most photos are taken from standing height. Not good. If an interesting angle is Ladders provide a top/down view. desired, simply changed the physical stance. Try lying on the Use squatting for low action . ground and shooting upward. How about shooting from a step ladder and Lay down for an shooting unusual low angle. downward? The weather is warming up. Practice before the vacation comes or the kids’ sports season starts. Grab the dog and take a photo of him at his level, not at the photographer’s height. Wait. Look behind the pet and see what is in the background. Is the driveway full of cars behind him? Then simply walk around the animal framing attractive landscaping in the background instead. Remember, even animals look more attractive on a slight angle. Don’t shoot the pet square in the face. Move slightly to catch the animal’s face as if framing a human face, on a slight angle. He will lick a photographer’s hand for it.
TIPS FROM A PRO Arranging people for a portrait takes more imagination than pointing a camera at the subject and saying, “Cheese!” Broken Arrow photographer David Dietrich has a photography business titled after his name and can capture some dazzling photos. He also has been a second shooter for some recognizable names, one being the “Iron Lady.” Yes, he has been on a photo shoot for the former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. Drawing from his deep well of expertise, Dietrich has advice to help novices showcase a professional look for their photos. • Dietrich says to take advantage of the technology. This is no longer the day of taking photos with film and having to wait a few days to see how the work looks. A photographer can’t overshoot nowadays; they can always delete unwanted photos. • Take numerous shots with the face angled in a variety of ways – chin down or head tilted – and then preview what was just taken. See what is working or what is not flattering and reposition the subject. Have them turn their face slightly and look back at the camera. That slight turn changes the look of the chin, nose or eyes. • Get group or family faces in as much area of the photo as possible. If shooting inside, for instance, stack people behind a sofa with some in front on the sofa. If outdoors, use rocks, logs, steps, anything that can stack them. Place faces where the viewer’s eye flows around the whole photo rather than positioning people in a straight line. • Dietrich says subjects can get stoic and stiff during a shoot. A photographer can get natural shots, however, with the camera snapping while interacting with the group, while they are laughing and having a good time. Facial expressions become much more natural as people begin to loosen up. • What to do if a subject has a double chin? This pro says to shoot from above. When the subject looks up into the camera, it pulls their neck tight. • This seasoned professional suggests if a family has a pet, incorporate Fido into the photo. It makes the family interact authentically. In addition, get the pet to look its best using a miniature reflector or even a squeaker toy to catch the pet’s attention just before the click; it will perk up the puppy.

A Harvest of Tradition at Bixby’s Green Corn Festival! BY MACY GOODNIGHT
J
une, 2021: There are some summer memories that are so sweet that all of the senses are stirred when we recollect them. For generations, The Bixby Green Corn Festival has been serving up more than food and fun, but a
timeless tradition that will always be remembered. In its 47th year, the festival will be held, as always, on the fourth Thursday, Friday and Saturday of June. From June 24 through June 26, this year, visitors will enjoy more than a dozen carnival rides, food trucks, live music and entertainment, arts and crafts, and of course, fresh, roasted corn on the cob. Corn hole tournaments, Box Turtle and Bull Frog Races, Bingo, Hula-Hoop Contests, Wheelbarrow Races, Frisbee and Football Tosses, Corn and Watermelon Eating contests, and much more can all be enjoyed at this good old fashioned, fun for the whole family festival. The entire event takes place in the newly updated historic district in downtown
Bixby, and Charley Young Park. Visitors are invited to bring their lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy the live music on the Gazebo stage, while soaking in the warm summer sun, with some incredible food and icy cold beverages. The Green Corn Festival is the main source of support for The Bixby Optimists Club, and proceeds for the event help to support the needs of youth in the community. Event Committee Chairman, Kevin Dean, is proud of their mission. “We bring out the best in youth,” he said. “We give a lot of money to the schools, we buy park equipment, eyeglasses, and even pay for vision and hearing tests.” The Club is open to all men and women in the Bixby community who are interested in becoming a member and “wish to be known as a friend to the youth.” “We help out in the community, but it’s really all about the kids, and helping them,” said Kevin. “We’re always looking for new

members, and anyone who wants to participate.” The Optimist Club has been hosting the Festival since 1974, with all of the traditions that visitors have come to love over the years, and those have remained relatively unchanged since that time. The origins of the event, however, began around World War II, when Bixby was nationally recognized for its produce distribution. A prominent grower and shipper, Clyde Miller, had a particularly fruitful season in 1949 and passed that reward on to his workers. Mr. Miller organized a festival, with music, food,
and games for his employees and their families to enjoy, and it was so well received that it became an annual tradition. “Bixby used to ship out trainloads of corn 24/7, all over the country,” said Kevin. Bixby has achieved magnificent revitalization and beautification of their historic downtown, and the Festival will highlight much of those features this year. “Bixby has its eye on bringing people downtown,” Kevin said, “and it’s time for the Southside to shine.” Volunteers are always needed for the Green Corn Festival. Be a Hero at the Tee with The Demand Project BY MACY GOODNIGHT
J
une, 2021: It’s hard to fathom that real people can be plucked away and exploited for dark, salacious purposes. It’s terrifying for a parent to realize the extreme possibility that any child can, and will be exposed to sexual predation and that an open door is provided by the technology they so easily have access to. Silence is not an option. The Demand Project is fighting for these lives, and invite you to join them in discovering the hero that is YOU. On June 28, they will host their 8th annual golf tournament at the worldrenowned Golf Club of Oklahoma, where participants will “Drive Out Human Trafficking.” The tourney will begin at 8:30 a.m., with an awards ceremony at 2 p.m. A hole-in-one prize will be an opportunity to drive away in a new car, sponsored by Mark Allen Chevrolet. Mathis Brothers Furniture will be sponsoring numerous contest holes, including Closet to Pin and Longest Drive. Food and beverages will be served. Multiple sponsorship opportunities are available, and individuals and teams can register for 18 holes of play for a spectacular day of golf. In addition to this year’s tournament, an exclusive women’s “High Tee” event will simultaneously take place in the club house. From 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., ladies may enjoy “High Tee,” an elegant brunch, speakers, and some sophisticated
shopping with vendors, such as Kendra Scott, Dillard’s, Salt Earth and Damsel in Defense. “All of our sellers are women-based businesses, and things geared toward women,” said Jamie Miller, Demand Project Donor Developer, Funding Coordinator and Event Coordinator. “You’ll come and shop, and all vendors will give 20 percent of what’s sold that day back to The Demand Project. It’ll be super fun!” Attire for the event will be Kentucky Derby style, with dresses and hats. “I’ve always wanted to do an event to empower women, and Jamie totally embraced that vision,” said organization co-founder, Kristin Weis. “We want women to leave more joyful than when they came.” The 8th annual golf tournament and High Tee event are one of the largest fundraisers for The Demand Project, whose mission is to educate, equip, and empower the community on how to stay safe against child predators who seek to harm children, while also supporting the prosecution of these criminals. They are greatly invested in the recovery and restoration of trafficking victims, and in recent years established a safe haven, called Mt. Arukah. The home can protect and serve approximately 60 in need and requires a great deal of financial support to operate.

“Recovery is barely the beginning,” said Kristin. “It’s a lifelong journey of healing, and that healing begins with a community willing to give and help fuel it.” Participation in these events is not only rewarding for the experience, but a chance to become part of the solution, to become a hero in the story of an innocent child. Awareness is key in the fight. “It’s so much deeper than just an event,” Kristin said, “By coming out and enjoying a day, while understanding the problem, YOU can be a part of the solution.” Registration for the Golf Tournament and High Tee, as well as more organization information and resources, can be found on their website, at www. thedemandproject.org.

steoporosis can be as deadly as heart disease. In the 1980s, the disease was naturally considered a normal process of aging. As medicine evolved, it became evident that Osteoporosis was connected to fractures. Today, medicine shows that not everyone with Osteoporosis has low bone density and people can have ‘fragility fractures’ as a result of the disease’s progression. “There are thousands of doctors who do kyphoplasty in the U.S. and very few actually treat the underlying osteoporosis. As an interventional musculoskeletal radiologist, there are very few of us who actually focus on treating osteoporosis and not just fixing fractures. I was the first in Oklahoma to have a free standing clinic focused on treating osteoporosis, not just the fractures with kyphoplasty, but medically treating the underlying osteoporosis. There are probably less than 20 doctors around the country that I know that do this to the high degree that we do,” explained Dr. Webb. Though the majority of

Osteoporosis patients are over 60, he has treated patients as young as 18, and many in their 30s. He is helping drive research for vertebral fractures. Dr. Webb is offering free bone density scans to qualified patients to improve access to care as well as raise awareness of the disease.
“I really wanted to offer free screening to all patients who needed it--to raise awareness of bone health and to give back to this community that has been so supportive of us.” “Most people hear the word ‘osteoporosis’ and they think of a ninety-year-old grandmother with a hip fracture. Unfortunately, problems with bone health can impact younger patients and it also affects men.” Webb said. “Like heart disease or a stroke,

people think it can’t happen to them until it’s too late. Fractures from bad bone health are a common cause of misdiagnosed back pain. If you’re concerned about your bone health, or you have back pain that no one has been able to help, give us a call.” Interested participants should call the Dr. James Webb & Associates office at 918-260-9322 for a prescreening. Priority will be given to those who have fallen and broken a bone, have a family history of osteoporosis, or take certain medications proven to reduce bone density. Pre-screening is needed to make sure that the test is medically indicated as well as to avoid regulatory hurdles. “I really wanted to offer free screening to all patients who needed it--to raise awareness of bone health and to give back to this community that has been so supportive of us,” Webb says. “Unfortunately, government and insurance regulations actually won’t allow us to do that, so our focus is really for uninsured patients who need bone density testing”
Osteoporosis occurs when the body’s bones become weak from low bone density, low bone quality, or both. As a result, bones become weak and may break from a fall or, in serious cases, from something as slight as sneezing or minor bumps. Most often, osteoporosis is a silent killer until a fracture occurs. “There is hope for slowing down and even reversing the effects of bad bone health,” said Webb. “The key is to catch it as early as possible and then treat it medically to reduce the risk of future fractures.” Osteoporosis is often underdiagnosed. At least once a month he sees a patient who has been told they don’t have osteoporosis when in fact they do have the disease. One of the ways doctors screen is by using a DEXA bone density scan. This test does two things: Screens for risk in asymptomatic people; and
helps determine if a person’s bone density is low enough to be put on medication. Screening is good if you have a family history or any concern about Osteoporosis. Essentially, a bone density scan compares bone density to the bones of an average healthy young adult. The test results can help determine if you have osteoporosis, are at risk for it, and can be used to determine the overall risk for having a fracture. “Advanced CT scans and X-ray’s can miss half the fractures; and two-thirds of the unfound vertebral fractures heal before they receive medical treatment,” explained Dr. Webb. “A physical exam is the most technical way to detect a fracture. We treat the patient and not the imaging because we know that many fractures are painful for weeks before we can detect the collapse on imaging.” He specializes in innovative less invasive treatments to treat Osteoporosis and fractures before they become severe. He uses a variety of treatments including kyphoplasty, steroid injections, ablations and other pain-relieving procedures.
Left image: MRI showing acute fracture with fluid cleft. Middle image: picture during kyphoplasty with balloon in the fracture cleft. Dr. Webb – Kyphoplasty Expert in back pain relief, treating old and new injuries...focuses on finding the underlying cause of back pain in patients and providing targeted, minimally invasive treatment. Kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive procedure that quickly repairs vertebral compression fractures (VCF) and restores structural integrity to broken vertebral bone. It is an outpatient procedure that uses a cavity creation device (usually a balloon) to create a space in the broken vertebra which is then filled with a special bone cement to stabilize the fracture and reduce pain. Dr. Webb is one of the most experienced physicians in the United States and has performed thousands of these procedures. Left: Bone densitometry, also called dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, DEXA or DXA, uses a very small dose of ionizing radiation to produce pictures of the inside of the body (usually the lower (or lumbar) spine and hips) to measure bone loss. It is commonly used to diagnose osteoporosis, to assess an individual’s risk for developing osteoporotic fractures. DXA is simple, quick and noninvasive. It’s also the most commonly used and the most standard method for diagnosing osteoporosis. WWW.VALUENEWS.COM JUNE 2021 OWASSO & COLLINSVILLE VALUE NEWS

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), all chimneys should be cleaned at least once every year. Keeping your chimney clean helps prevent home fires—it’s as simple as that. When you burn a fire in your fireplace, two things happen: Chimney soot builds up, as well as creosote, which is a heavy, thick, oily residue similar to tar that’s a byproduct of burning wood. While soot is more easily removable, creosote sticks to the chimney lining, which can be dangerous because it’s extremely flammable.

WANTED: DEAD OR ALIVE Catoosa Historical Museum to Host Outlaw Exhibit BY MACY GOODNIGHT 36 |
VALUE NEWS OWASSO & COLLINSVILLE JUNE 2021 WWW.VALUENEWS.COM
une, 2021: Oklahoman’s are no strangers to outlaw history, with legends and tales of a bygone era romanticized in story and song. The Catoosa Historical Society and Museum is excited to share WANTED: Dead or Alive – Oklahoma’s Legendary Outlaws, an exhibit of the state’s most infamous criminals from before Statehood, through the late 1950s. This thrilling event will be held at the Catoosa Historical Museum, 217 S. Cherokee Street, beginning June 7 through Aug. 9, 2021, on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays (excluding July 3), from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is FREE. Visitors will experience a photographic journey through time, in an exhibit comprised of images of some of the state’s most famous criminals, drawn directly from the records of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the University of Oklahoma Western History Collections, the National Archives, Oklahoma Historical Society archives, and private lenders. Mugshots, crime scene locations, and more can be viewed in a timeline spanning over 70 years of history. Some familiar names will be recognized, such as The Doolin and Dalton Gangs, Ma Barker and more. Belle Starr and Blue Duck will be also be traveling with this amazing exhibit. Blue Duck was convicted of murder in Ft. Smith and was almost hung. His sentence was commuted, and he died at home of poor health. He is buried at a local cemetery in Catoosa. Many outlaws reputedly passed through town during its primetime. In 1882, Catoosa was the farthest point west that the railroad went, and it was a large,

thriving community. According to local historians, a 1937 newspaper account of the town’s history records the late 1800s Catoosa as “a lawless, godless, hell-roaring Cowtown… the worst in Indian Territory.” Sometimes the stories are not as much about the location as they are the individual,” said Catoosa Historical Society President, Teresa McAfee-O’Donnell. “Although many of the stories feature despicable characters, others tell of people whose lives went temporarily astray.” “We chose the outlaw exhibit because it is interesting and has ties to our local history. The outlaw known as Blue Duck is buried in Catoosa’s Dick Duck cemetery that is down the street,” stated Kayce Nelson, CHS Vice President. “We want to
attract people to the community and to the museum, we think this exhibit is something people will come see.” Catoosa’s history is vast, in that there are so many stories to tell. The Historical Museum is an engaging interpretation of the community’s past and resilience. Teresa’s mother, Georgia E. McAfee, was committed to honoring the lives that built the foundation of the town, and she is recognized as being instrumental in the establishment of the Catoosa Historical Society, as well as her vision for the museum complex, which was built under her leadership and direction. The main building of the complex is an exact replica of their original train depot, built to its exact specifications. A recent addition of a replica post office, exactly as it was Below: 1931 Model A Ford, Original Post Masters Car, in the early belonged to Newton M. The Charismatic Characters of Claremore J BY MACY GOODNIGHT
une, 2021: There is no denying that the beautiful city of Claremore has a rich and vibrant history, with some notable figures garnering fantastic accomplishments. Some of their citizens have made impacts that have been felt around the world. It might have one asking, “Is there something in the water?” The Claremore Museum of History, located at 121 N. Weenonah Ave., is filled with information on these intriguing characters, as well as the fascinating facts on the foundation of this city to today. Admission is free,
and visitors will find an immersive experience, with stellar storytelling and vivid imagery. The mission of the museum “is to create engaging experiences that celebrate history, connect community and inspire creativity.” Mission accomplished. Many visitors are surprised to learn that Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma! was adapted from a play written by author, poet and playwright, Lynn Riggs (1899-1954), who was born and raised in Claremore, and details from his life and work can be discovered here. Amazingly, the “Surrey with the Fringe on Top,” from

the 1955 film, starring Gordon MacRae and Shirley Jones can also be found with this collection. In honor of another Claremore citizen, this year, celebrations are in order for the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 14 mission in 1971, which was piloted by Stewart Roosa (1933-1994). An exhibit is currently on display to honor his accomplishments, with additions to come. Exhibits on Will Rogers, Patti Page, and more are also housed at this magnificent museum. On June 19, Claremore MOH will open their much-anticipated Black History exhibit, “Building Heritage, History and Hope.” Features will include citizen highlights, Black-owned businesses with mapping, and details on the Lincoln school that opened in 1899, before statehood. “A big part of this project has been the community coming together with memories of the Black community, and this really cool celebration of the individuals that came out of Claremore,” said Kelsey Hildebrand, Director of Education and Outreach. “The graduates of the
Above: The Claremore Museum of History is currently working on a very exciting project highlighting black leaders and events that helped shape our community. Our Black History Exhibit “Building Heritage, History and Hope” is currently in the design process with plans to unveil June 19th. The exhibit will feature historical photo’s and artifacts that cover Black education in Claremore, from Lincoln School through integration. We have a section on Black military veterans including the first Black cadet, as well as the first Black soldier from Claremore to lose their life in battle. The athletic section covers the Claremore Hall of Fame inductees, the Lincoln Lion state basketball champion team, the semi-pro Claremore Clowns baseball team as well as other noteworthy athletes. The Jones family is highlighted, from W.C. Jones - principal at Lincoln School, his son C.D. Jones - veteran and City of Claremore employee, C.D.’s wife Irene - long time teacher at both Lincoln and Westside Elementary and Rogers County Teacher of the Year, and C Darnell Jones, US Presidential appointed District Judge. We have a section on Religion covering both Mount Zion Baptist Church and Bethel AME church, a section for Claremore’s Black trailblazers including Ronnie Johnson, first OHP Black trooper and a section on Historic Black businesses. In conjunction with the exhibit, we’ve also developed a video montage that is available for viewing and have educational programming in progress so that the MoH can take Claremore’s Black history into our public school system.

A 2016 graduate of Oklahoma State University, she earned her Bachelor’s in Natural Resources and Wildlife Biology, and in 2021 earned her Master’s Degree from the University of Tulsa in Museum Science and Management. After OSU, she worked as a Wildlife Biologist for the National Ecological Observatory Network for three years but returned home to be close to her family, and to make a career in outreach and programming. “I am extremely passionate about informal education and outreach, and creating opportunities for anybody to learn something new about the world around them,” said Kelsey. “For a
