There’s a secret to making the wood cabinets, paneling, baseboards, doors and frames in your home look new again – without spending a lot of money. That secret is Gleam Guard. With weddings and other special events coming up, homeowners want their homes to look their best. So hence, consumers are looking for the best value for their money. The Gleam Guard professionals can quickly, easily and affordably update the look of your house while saving you thousands of dollars. Founder Tracy Booth recalls saving a homeowner $30,000 by having Gleam Guard refinish their entire
house. The Gleam Guard process refinishes kitchens, baths and laundry cabinets and just about any interior woodwork – without stripping, sanding or using any toxic fumes. The process will make your interior woodwork look like pretty much new again, without the high cost of getting brand-new cabinets or refacing. Gleam Guard bonds to the original finish, enhances the wood grain and gives it a fresh oiled look that never needs polishing again. All it needs is a regular wipedown with a damp cloth from time to time to maintain its look. A bit of white vinegar is all that’s needed for
stubborn spots. Tracy sums up the advantages of Gleam Guard. “It’s fast, and it’s easy for the customers,” he says. “They can leave the shelf contents as they are. It’s not expensive. And it lasts. Many customers say they wish they had called a lot sooner.” The process works on painted, glazed and pickled woods, as well as traditional wood surfaces. Gleam Guard is available in three sheens, from satin to semi-gloss, and can be used on old or new cabinets. The Gleam Guard crew works diligently to complete the job so you can have your kitchen (continued on page 22)

ASK THE MONEY MAVEN STRAIGHT-FORWARD, NO-NONSENSE TALK ABOUT YOUR MONEY
The Politics of Investing BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT
Like no other political contest in recent memory, the nation is transfixed on the 2012 presidential election. But while Main Street looks to the fall campaign with great anticipation, many investors do not. When you step into the voting booth this fall, you should consider which candidate is not only the right person for the nation, but your personal finances as well. Indeed, this is the Politics of Investing. Today’s issues of energy, gas, credit, shrinking home values, and rising health costs all can seem very daunting. But as President Harry Truman told us, the United States has always anticipated the future with courage and excitement. “America was not built on fear. America was built on courage…” As investors, we have witnessed extremely difficult times, from assassination to war to oil embargoes to crippling recessions. And in every case, we have not only persevered, but have gone on to new highs. Think back some 75 years, and today’s economic concerns can be put into much better perspective. The country was debilitated by the Depression when Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected president in 1932. Congress, and our nation, hung on every word of FDR’s first inaugural address, hoping for national insight. He gave us national inspiration. “Let me assert my firm belief,” Roosevelt solemnly intoned, “that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” Of course, he was right. And, desperate as those days were, $100 invested
after that historic speech would have grown to some $442,000 (average annual return 11.90%) by December 31, 2007. Granted, even $100 was hard to come by back then. But Roosevelt’s message was not about material things. Roosevelt’s words then, and still today, speak to faith…in our nation, in our future, and in ourselves. (Investment growth of $100 (from 3/06/33 to 12/31/07) is based on the S&P Index, which is an unmanaged list of 500 widely held U.S. common stocks frequently used as a measure of the U.S. stock market performance. This index is not available for direct investment.) Ned Davis Research, 2008. If anyone tells you that America’s best days are behind her, they’re looking the wrong way.” ~ George H.W. Bush. It’s almost as if every visit to the grocery store, every gas station fillup, utility bill, credit card statement and mortgage payment is getting harder and harder to make. It can make you miserable. In fact,
economists have a way to measure it. It’s literally called the Misery Index, and it monitors the nation’s unemployment and inflation rates. In January, 2012, the Misery Index registered 11.23. Not great. But a far cry from the post-World War II record of 20.76, set in 1980. Speaking of misery, Ronald Reagan said, “Recession is when your neighbor loses his job. Depression is when you lose yours.” We have certainly seen extremely high unemployment as of late. Yet even considering those dismal days, investors who sat on the sidelines would have missed out on some significant opportunities, including the bull markets of 1985, 1998 and 2002. Source: miseryindex.us, 2012. Finally, one last quote… Thomas “Tip” O’Neill, Jr. (1912-1994) once famously said, “All politics is local.” O’Neill knew – perhaps better than most – that everything from city council elections to presidential politics centers on bread and butter issues. More than a few presidents have been unseated on economic issues alone. So it would be understandable if you were to ask yourself this fall, “Which party will be better for my investments?” Please vote responsibly! M Martial Arts Not Just for Kicks According to Chris Velez, the lessons students learn in martial arts can positively impact their entire lives.
By Lorrie Ward It has often been said that success breeds success. But this statement is missing something: what bred that success in the first place? Chris Velez, owner of Martial Arts Academy in Owasso, believes that by teaching a child that perseverance and commitment can lead to success, you teach him or her not only what it takes to be successful, but how it feels along the journey – and that journey starts with a goal or desired destination. “The importance of a young person setting a large, specific goal like the ones found in martial arts is seeing that goal through,” says Velez. “Rarely has a young person had the opportunity to set such an ambitious goal and then endure all the pain, time and effort it takes to bring it to fruition; so, in many cases, there isn’t a proper calibration of time and effort that leads to the reaping of a result.” Velez describes this process as a “team effort,” one that takes a particular type of cooperation from the student, their parents, and the martial arts instructors. The students set their minds to the goal and do the work to reach it. The martial arts trainers
make it a priority to teach the students what they need to help them achieve their objectives. The parents help the students set these goals and then provide guidance and encouragement. “If students, parents, and kids are on the same page,” says Velez,
have the ability or life experience to follow through completely on a major goal, such as obtaining a black belt. “They still have to learn not to get discouraged at the time and effort it takes,” he says. “The process changes their mindset to a new way of think-
major goal, so in nearly all cases, the parent is setting the goal for the child more they are for themselves,” he continues. “As a student goes through this experience, they begin their day to day grind to feel what six months or a year of work feels

helpful later in life, as the students will translate this understanding to the work environment. For instance, they will understand what it means to wait through an initial six-month probation to receive benefits on a new job. Velez relates that adults who have never learned the difference between the “feeling” of a waiting period of time as opposed to the “reality” often have to learn the hard way. “They often quit and move on a few times before they learn that’s just how it is,” he says. Velez believes that through martial arts training, with trainers, parents and students working as a team, the student is set up for success, since it is not left up to chance whether they will make it to the end and martial arts keeps its complete focus on the finish – black belt status. “It seems to me that if a child were to set a goal and not make it in formative years, it is more damaging than never setting a goal at all,” says Velez. “Through this process, they have developed a definiteness of purpose.”

Students learn valuable life lessons including goal setting through martial arts training. “we can recoup the benefits of this formula with major long term and lasting results.” According to Velez, it is important for parents to realize that most students do not yet
ing that permeates everything in their life.” This is where parental guidance becomes so important. “Adults and parents already have a degree of understanding to what it feels like to pursue a

like, and they begin to calibrate their expectation of work and the amount of time it takes to reap the benefits.” Velez points out that this whole new mindset will be

NNeighborhood Neuter Family Animal Medicine is hosting their inaugural Neighborhood Neuter event this month, offering a discount on spaying and neutering. By Lorrie Ward If you have a pet that needs to be spayed or neutered and you’re looking for a caring, safe and affordable place to have the procedure performed, there is still time to take advantage of the first Neighborhood Neuter event at Family Animal Medicine in Owasso. This event will run in April and May every year and offers a discount on a comprehensive spaying and neutering package, including pre-op lab work, hospitalization, anesthesia, and medications. Dr. Jenny Nobles and Dr. Gena Guerriero of Family Animal Medicine concentrate specifically on pet population control, pointing to statistical evidence provided by The National Council on Pet Population. Some of the most astounding statistics show that anywhere from six to eight million cats and dogs enter shelters each year, and of that number, three to four million (half) are euthanized. The American Humane Association reports that these huge numbers are caused by three main factors: people regarding pets as disposable or inconvenient, peo-

ple choosing to buy pets from breeders rather than adopting, and irresponsible breeding practices by pet breeders themselves. In addition to the fact that spaying and neutering helps control the number of stray and roaming animals who eventually find their way into such shelters, Dr. Guerriero and Dr. Nobles also point to the health benefits of sterilizing pets and emphasize that the earlier the procedure is done, the better. “Research has shown that in females, every heat cycle increases their chance to have mammary carcinomas and pyometra, conditions similar to breast cancer and endometriosis in humans,” says Dr. Guerriero. “While we are very interested in controlling the numbers of unwanted pets, we are also interested in the health of the individual animal.” Dr. Nobles also points to the behavioral advantages of having pets neutered as early as possible, especially when it comes to males. “If the male is neutered before four to six months of age, he is less likely to develop bad habits such as marking and aggression,” she
Page 7
says. “He is less likely to jump fences to find a female in heat, and a spayed female is less likely to roam as well.” This instinct to roam is one of the reasons some pets show up in shelters – they become lost and simply cannot find their way home. Sadly, this contributes to the fact that only 30 percent of the dogs and far fewer cats (only 2 to 5 percent) that arrive at shelters are reclaimed by their owners, according to the study by The National Council of Pet Population. To help increase the number of pets reunited with loving families, Family Animal Medicine is offering a discount on microchip insertion during a spay or neuter procedure, while the pet is anesthetized for surgery. Dr. Guerriero and Dr. Nobles hope for a great response from the community for this first-year event and encourage everyone to mark their calendars for next year as well if they plan to acquire a new pet. “The numbers in these shelters are huge,” says Dr. Guerriero. “We hope to do our part to help control the number of strays and roamers and the pet population overall.”

FFit Body Ahead Fit For Her offers a variety of amenities to help ladies get in top-top shape for the summer.
By Lorrie Ward Personal attention: it’s what Fit For Her in Owasso has built its reputation on. That’s why it’s no surprise that Adana Gittelman, personal trainer and owner of Fit for Her, reports that their business is experiencing unprece-
dented growth. And she is quick to give credit where she feels credit is due. “It’s all about my staff,” says Adana. “They are highly qualified, caring and personable.” Adana has been a personal

trainer for seven years and has been in the fitness industry for 15 years. Fit For Her employs seven trainers total. “We strive to find the most qualified individuals for our staff,” she adds. Kayla, the evening shift manager who has been with Fit For Her for nearly two years, is currently training to compete in this year’s NPC Grand Prix Bodybuilding, Fitness, Figure, and Bikini National Qualifier. Brittany, the morning shift manager and newest addition to Fit For Her, is the 2006 NPC Oklahoma Teen

Fitness Champion and the 2010 Battle of the Bodies and Oklahoma Teen and Open Class Champion. Adana points to what she calls a “robust class schedule” as another reason for the recent trend of growth at Fit For Her. Current classes include Zumba, yoga, Fit Camp, Tabata and Stretching, and Butts and Guts. One of their most popular classes right now is RIP – an hour-long, choreographed barbell training class set to music. RIP has been compared to another popular class known as Body Pump. “RIP is probably one of the most effective classes you can participate in for building strength without a lot of bulk,” says Adana. All classes take place in Fit For Her’s state-of-the-art, 2,400square-foot studio, with its DIN Standard Compliant flooring system and current, well maintained equipment. For the complete class schedule, and a complete list of services and amenities, visit their website at www.fitforherowasso.com. You can also find daily class schedule, event updates, daily specials, and contests on Fit For Her’s Facebook fan page. The Fit For Her facility and schedule is completely designed to help each lady find success in her quest toward fitness, confidence and wellbeing. In addition to personal training and the extensive class schedule, they
offer 24/7 access to cardio and strength equipment, free weights, tanning, a sauna, massage chairs, and a videomonitored playroom for kids. While the fitness facility at Fit For Her is designed to be equivalent to a co-ed gym but for ladies only, Adana would like to point out that men are welcome to come into the office and shop the supplement store, a business she reports has really taken off in the last year. “We have some of the best and most competitive prices on supplements in the Tulsa metro area,” says Adana. “Right now, one of our hottest selling items is Raspberry Ketones, which aids metabolism and weight loss.” Adana’s goal has always been to provide both quality and personalized service, and with this focus, Fit For Her Owasso’s growth is bound to continue. “We constantly strive to be the cleanest, best operated facility with the highest level of customer service,” she says. “We set our own standards and then try to outdo them. We care about the best interest of our clients.”

Breast augmentation is a very common procedure in the practice of most plastic surgeons. If you are considering breast enhancement, it is important to understand the process you will go through before, during, and after surgery.
• Tanning • Sauna • Fitness Classes
My personal approach begins with determining what breast size the patient has in mind. By reviewing the before and after photographs in my albums, or pictures the patient may have brought in, I can begin to understand the desired result. We also have each patient place different size implants in their bra to see what look they find most attractive. During the surgery I temporarily place “sizers” in the pocket I create under each breast. These can be inflated to different sizes, and by viewing the patient in the upright position, I can more accurately determine the correct size.

Another technique that I have found useful is using the Keller Funnel implant delivery device. A silicone gel implant will slide through this bag into the incision and the pocket under the breast. This allows a quicker insertion process through a smaller incision that is less traumatic to the implant and surrounding skin. iBlock – “Robotic” Total Knee Replacement
Dr. LaButti is the first orthopedic surgeon in northeast Oklahoma to perform computer-assisted robotic total knee replacement surgery. By Sheryl Sowell Head of the class. Compassionate. Straightforward and confident. Skillful. The best. All of these phrases have been used to describe Dr. Ronald LaButti by his patients, and with good reason. He has proven to be devoted to his craft, helping thousands of people overcome disability and suffering associated with hip and knee pain. On April 3, 2012, Dr. LaButti made local history by being Tulsa’s first orthopedic surgeon to perform computerassisted robotic total knee replacement surgery using the Praxim Computer-Assisted Navigation System in conjunction with the iBlock, a robotic automated cutting block which interfaces with the computer navigation system. This is a major advancement in the field of joint replacement surgery. Dr. LaButti has been using navigation since 1999 and was the first physician to bring navigation to Oklahoma. The brand-new technology produces a 3-D image of the knee, which allows for superior surgical accuracy and alignment. The iBlock and NanoBlock
cutting guides, part of the Praxim System, offer real-time virtual planning technology followed by automated placement of the cutting guide, which allows the surgeon to make more precise bone cuts. This creates optimal alignment between the knee implant and surrounding bones. The automated, computer-assisted navigation system which Dr. LaButti used is only the fifth of its kind in the entire country. “I am very excited to offer this extraordinary technology to
my patients,” says Dr. LaButti. “When compared to more traditional forms of navigation, the iBlock cutting guide provides a significant advantage not only for the surgeon, but for the patient as well. When a joint is replaced, even a miniscule misalignment between the implant and the bones can harm joint performance and longevity. This innovative technique allows for precise measurements made dynamically in real time.” Most conventional total knee replacements require
surgeons to temporarily drive a rod into the bones to serve as an anchor for the cutting devices. The Praxim System eliminates the need for the rod, reducing the risk of formation of potentially dangerous emboli to the brain. Another benefit is that patients using the Praxim system do not need additional MRI or CT scans, minimizing exposure to radiation, as well as reducing time and costs. Dr. LaButti is very pleased to offer this technology to his patients, as their wellbeing and
success is his ultimate goal. “I am extremely proud to be Tulsa’s first orthopedic surgeon to offer patients access to the most advanced technology in the field of joint replacement,” says Dr. LaButti. “It’s an amazing system that is highly accurate, creating a more precise alignment and fit that will feel better and last longer. This is important news, especially now that baby boomers are getting joint replacements at even younger ages.” There are only five iBlock units in the United States, and Dr. LaButti is the only orthopedic surgeon in northeast Oklahoma trained to use this technology. If you have knee pain or have been told you need a knee replacement, you owe it to yourself to schedule a personal consultation with Dr. LaButti.

A Crash Course in Collision Shops
Liz and Randy Pruitt of Pruitt’s Auto Collision explain the difference between direct repair and independently owned collision shops. By Shelly Robinson Having an auto accident can be overwhelming, especially when you have to deal with collision repairs. You need your vehicle fixed quickly, but you want to make sure it’s repaired safely and at a trustworthy shop. Your insurer may refer you to a direct repair shop, but you wonder why they want you to go there – is it for your benefit or theirs? Randy and Liz Pruitt of Pruitt’s Auto Collision in Owasso feel consumers are wise to ask these questions and more. “It’s like anything else,” says Randy. “Until you are in the position of having to decide who to use, you may never give it much thought.” With over two decades in the auto repair business, the Pruitts are a good source for information. Liz uses the comparison of medical insurance to explain the difference between a direct repair shop and an independently owned shop such as Pruitt’s. “A direct repair shop is like an HMO for collision repairs; it’s offered as a convenience, but the shop signs an agreement that means they work for the insurance company, not for you.”
As a result, these direct repair shops are obligated to limit your repairs to your insurer’s cost guidelines, and not to the strict quality and safety standards set by your car’s manufacturer. On the other hand, an independently owned shop is more like a PPO plan. Pruitt’s Auto Collision does not have a contract with any insurance company. “Our goal is to repair the vehicle the way the customer wants it repaired, using original equipment manufactured parts,” states Liz. “As an independent shop, we have the flexibility to say no to inferior parts that a direct repair shop may have agreed to use.” The Pruitts are seeing more and more customers who share that after an accident, they have called their insurance company and been assured that their repair will be handled more quickly, or with less paperwork or a better price, if they use a repair shop recommended by the insurance company. Liz says sometimes they are even told they can go anywhere, but the adjuster can’t get there as quickly, they will have to pay for a rental car out of
pocket and be reimbursed, or they will have to pay the difference in repair costs if they choose to use a shop not recommended by their insurance agent. “We’ve even had customers who were told that their repairs would not be guaranteed if they didn’t use a direct repair shop, which is simply not true,” says Liz. Today’s vehicles have many safety systems in place, and they must be properly repaired or replaced after an accident in order for them to perform correctly in a collision. Bumpers are one of the most frequently damaged parts and one that is critical to provide proper protection in a crash. “Always ask where the parts are coming from – are they new or after-market or refurbished?” Randy advises. Randy says the bottom line is being able to trust the shop. Randy is ASE and I-CAR trained, and is certified on the Chief frame machine and PPG paint systems. The Pruitt’s painter, John Nash, adds over 40 years of experience, and Jason Linzy has over 15 years experience. Tulsa Tech student Nathan Haar is a shop helper.

Mothers Would Kiln for This Pottery The Pottery Cottage’s stunning variety of Polish pottery is an excellent gift idea for Mother’s Day.
By Lorrie Ward The Pottery Cottage has settled in nicely at its new and bigger location on downtown Claremore’s main strip at 323 W. Will Rogers Blvd., which is a wonderful development for owner Leslie Cohen because historic downtown Claremore has always been one of her favorite places. That’s why she is happy to announce the Pottery Cottage’s participation in Downtown First Night. Being held May 5 and continuing the first Saturday of each month through July, this event will feature different games at each participating shop, with prizes awarded to participants. Downtown First Night kicks off what Leslie promises to be a “very merry month of May” for Pottery Cottage. Mother’s Day is May 13, and Polish pottery makes a great gift for any mother on your list. “Whether they like to cook and bake or just appreciate good quality,” says Leslie, “mothers love this pottery.” In honor of Mother’s Day, Leslie is offering free shipping for those whose mothers live out of state. On May 19, The Pottery Cottage will have a table at A Vintage Affaire at the Belvidere Mansion, where you could find the perfect item for an upcoming
Leslie Cohen, owner of the Pottery Cottage. summer wedding or for that graduate on your list. As a matter of fact, Leslie notes, there are many people who purchase Polish pottery for children and grandchildren, as the pieces
make great heirlooms. “People often tell me of Polish pottery that is passed from generation to generation, and they come in to purchase settings for children and grandchildren,” she says.
“Having that family heritage is still important to people – and they are creating a tradition of quality.” These highly functional and attractive items have another advantage: they are versatile. Whether you like all of your place settings to match exactly, or if you like a more mix-andmatch approach, Polish pottery can help you create the table of your dreams. Leslie points to one particular customer, Cynthia Terhune of Claremore. Cynthia had originally purchased a Polish pottery set on QVC. Shortly thereafter, she discovered Leslie’s shop, and because Leslie receives her pottery from the same factory as QVC, she was able to get Cynthia a pattern that balanced with the first one. Leslie relates that now Cynthia is purchasing six different patterns. “Her table is eclectic, and yet the settings complement each other,” says Leslie. “The color scheme and overall idea of the table are the same, but each setting is unique – and that’s what makes it beautiful.” Leslie points out that there are also those who like to stick with a strictly blue and white color scheme, with different or
matching patterns, and she feels these make lovely tables as well. The important thing is that each person is able to express herself in her own unique way. Sometimes people have enjoyed their current Polish pottery pattern for a time, but are ready for a change. For them, Leslie will be setting up a resale corner in the shop, where people can swap their Polish pottery for a different pattern. Also coming soon: a website where customers can purchase Pottery Cottage items from the comfort of their own homes. Even after the website is up and running, Leslie hopes her shop will encourage visits to Will Rogers Boulevard. “I’m still very involved in the building up of downtown Claremore,” says Leslie. “I’m always excited to help preserve the history of my hometown.”

FFeeling Medieval?
Join hundreds of actors, artisans, musicians, jousters and magicians for the 2012 Oklahoma Renaissance Festival.
By John Owen It’s time once again for the Oklahoma Renaissance Festival at the Castle of Muskogee! This year’s event will feature new shops for Renaissance wares, new Pirate Ship and wharf area, new “Cave Area” plus new food, drink and entertainment venues. The growing village of Castleton displays the rich cultural tapestry, the beauty and grandeur you would have found in Renaissance England, right here in Oklahoma! You’ll be transported back to the 16th century as both the castle and the village come alive with over 600 costumed stage and street performers, merchants and artisans providing entertainment fit for royalty.
New acts this year include Cast in Bronze playing the carillon, a rare, medieval instrument. Thirty-five years ago, 35 bronze bells were placed on a mobile carillon frame by a Dutch bell foundry and sent to America. For the first time in history, the rarely-seen European art of carillon playing could be brought to audiences. Eventually, this carillon was given new life by Frank DellaPenna, MasterCarillonneur graduate of the French Carillon School in Tourcoing, France. The carillon is played by a silent and masked “spirit of the bells” that appears only to breathe life into the instrument
Cast in Bronze is a new act to the Oklahoma Renaissance Festival this year and will play the carillon, a four-ton medieval instrument.
for the performance. Cast in Bronze has been invited to perform for both Pope John Paul II and the U.S. Presidential Inauguration, and has performed at Walt Disney World’s Epcot Center in Orlando. The music of Cast in Bronze has also been heard on radio, at music and Renaissance festivals, on television including a special Christmas Eve performance on the NBC “Today” Show, and at Alice Cooper’s 2004 “Christmas Pudding” benefit concert. The carillon of Cast in Bronze consists of 35 bells with a total weight of four tons. It is the only musical act of its kind in the world, and the only carillon in history solely supported by listeners. Cast in Bronze will perform five times daily in the Tournament Arena of the Festival. Also new – the Looking Glass Players with a “you’ll-have –to-see-it-to-believe-it” stage filled with fascinating puppet characters. The entire stage will amble through the castle grounds. Circa Paleo will perform ancient folk music from cultures around the world. Plus, you’ll find all your other favorite acts appearing on the 15 stages scattered

www.ValueNews.com throughout the Castle grounds. There’s a new and expanded Pirate Ship Stage and wharf with a new pub for the thirsty. Near the harbor, you’ll find a new “Cave Area,” a cool grotto where you can get out of the sun, enjoy a little refreshment and listen to various entertainment including the Tulsa Pipe and Drum Corps. In the Tournament Arena, you’ll see the Knights of Noble Cause clash with sword and pike as they joust. Watch as the Birds of Prey demonstrate the hunt just as it was during the time of kings and lords. Move to the Living Chess Match and cheer on your Red Griffin favorites. Stroll down twisting, tree-covered village lanes filled with quaint shops displaying rare, one-of-akind, handcrafted goods. Stop at one of the inns for a flagon of ale, or don the latest Renaissance fashions, found in the marketplace. Follow the aromas of the fire-roasted food, then let the kids play some of the games or watch the performers while you enjoy a huge smoked turkey leg.
“All of the exciting new and returning acts are a must see for annual attendees and those new to the festival. The Oklahoma Renaissance Festival is a highly anticipated event each year, perfect for the entire family,” says Matt Hiller, vice president of the Castle of Muskogee. Fascinating fun and entertainment for all ages will be found at the expanded, better-than-ever Oklahoma Renaissance Festival, every weekend and Memorial Day, April 28 through May 28.

cancer and Alzheimer’s disease, builds bone density and lean muscle, and allows for greater endurance for exercise.” Both men and women lose testosterone as they get older, which is a major cause of these hormonal symptoms. Many women are surprised to learn that hormone decline begins about ten years before other symptoms of perimenopause set in; therefore, BHRT can benefit women as young as in their 20s. “Hormone balancing can help restore quality of life for men and women in a wide range of ages – whether you’re 25 or 75,” says Dr. Campbell. The pellets last four to six months and produce no side effects. The in-office procedure only takes about five minutes and is completely pain free. If you’re experiencing any of the symptoms associated with hormonal imbalance, Dr. Campbell suggests calling BA Med Spa to schedule an appointment to get tested and find out what hormones you need. “You don’t have to live with these symptoms. Depression, mood swings, lack of energy, lowered sexual drive – these can all negatively affect your life a great deal. Many patients feel they have gotten their lives back with hormone replacement therapy. It can improve your quality of life by leaps and bounds.” Dr. Campbell is a certified pelleter. He trained with Dr. Gino Tutera, who developed and refined the SottoPelle system and who is a widely recognized leader in the field of bio-identical
BA Med Spa & Weight Loss Center now offers bio-identical hormone replacement therapy.
By Sheryl Sowell Do you find yourself irritable and snapping at loved ones for no reason? Are you always tired? Do you have weight in your midsection that you can’t seem to get rid of? According to Dr. James Campbell of BA Med Spa & Weight Loss Center, hormone balance is critical to a person’s overall health and wellbeing. Many people exhibit symptoms of imbalanced hormones –
depression, irritability, lack of energy, unexplained weight gain, lack of focus and mental clarity, restless sleep, decrease in libido – yet do not understand why they feel the way the do. “BA Med Spa now offers bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) utilizing the SottoPelle pellet method,” explains Dr. Campbell. “Bioidentical hormones are natural,

hormone replacement. Dr. Tutera’s unique treatment method is based on prescribing the right kind of hormone (biologically identical), in the correct amounts (determined through testing and proper analysis of the results), using the right delivery system (pellets). “Dr. Tutera has treated over 30,000 people for hormone balancing,” adds Dr. Campbell. Pelleting is not a new phenomenon – it was first introduced in 1935. “Pelleting is currently the primary way people achieve hormone balance throughout Europe and Australia,” explains Dr. Campbell. “Bio-identical hormones are superior to synthetic hormones because they are all-natural, have anti-inflammatory properties, and do not increase your risk of breast cancer.” Thousands of men and women across the United States and Canada have used SottoPelle hormone therapy to achieve a natural healthy balance of hormones. “This procedure can change your life,” says Dr. Campbell. Fight Hunger, Feed Hope
Join surrounding area friends and neighbors in providing food for the hungry of eastern Oklahoma at the Panera Hunger Run on June 2, 2012.
By Duane Blankenship June 2, 2012 marks the date for the 5th annual Panera Hunger Run to help fight hunger in Oklahoma. The Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma encourages runners and walkers to lace up their shoes and join them for a day of fun with the entire family. The event area will feature a Kid’s Zone with inflatables including a Jupiter Jump, slide, face painting, and more. Panera Bread has been the major sponsor of the Hunger Run since its inception. Other sponsors for this year’s event are Magellan Midstream
Partners, Williams Companies, SGA Design Group, and Dr. Tom and Sue Stees. The Panera Hunger Run commences at 8 a.m. at Tulsa River Parks at 96th & Riverside. Pre-registration is $20; day of race is $25. The event includes a 1K Fun Run or the timed 5K Run/Walk. This is a great opportunity for churches, school groups, or organizations to challenge like groups. Maybe your high school football team could challenge another of your school’s teams or organizations. Register now for the Panera
Young volunteers from St. Stephen’s United Methodist Church of Broken Arrow combine forces to help package food for distribution to 450 participating Partner Programs that feed the hungry.
Hunger Run at www.cfbeo.org. Prizes will be awarded for standard USATF groups, teams with the most participants, and teams and individuals with the most outside contributions. If you or your business would like to be a sponsor, please contact Frances Bevel at fbevel@cfbeo.org. Maggie Hoey, communications specialist for the food bank, says, “For every $1 raised, the food bank can provide seven meals to those who cannot feed their families.” The Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma saw last fiscal year as the largest distribution in its more than 30-year history. They distributed more than 16.8 million pounds of food over 12 months, a 25 percent increase over the previous year. Over 70,000 meals per week were distributed to 450 Partner Programs within the 24-county service area. Oklahoma is now tied with Arkansas as the hungriest states in the nation (USDA Household Food Security Report). An astonishing one in four children in Oklahoma struggle with hunger, and 17 percent of our state’s population is classified as food insecure, not knowing where their next meal will come from.
www.ValueNews.com Last year saw a total of 10,216 volunteers recording a combined 46,042 hours helping in sorting and repackaging donated food and assisting with other administrative tasks, which saved the food bank more than $500,000 in wages and compensation. The food bank is grateful for the volunteer support and generosity of the area’s many individuals, groups, organizations, and the business community. May 12 will be the 20th anniversary for National Stamp Out Hunger, sponsored by the National Association of Letter Carriers. You are invited to leave a bag of donated goods by your mailbox to be picked up by your letter carrier. The donated items will then be delivered to the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma for distribution. “Like all our food bank programs, said Maggie, “volunteers help make this program successful.” Reasor’s participates in the National Stamp Out Hunger program by making it easy for shoppers to buy a $15 bag of “most-needed” food items that will be delivered to the food bank for distribution to Partners Program volunteers. All contributions to the food bank are tax deductible. Of the households experiencing hunger, less than 20 percent are classified as unemployed. More than a third is disabled and/or retired. The remaining 46 percent have at least one working member. Join the Community Food
Maggie Hoey says “thank you” to the thousands of volunteers who participate with the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma as they distribute over 70,000 meals each week. Don’t Be Fuelish About Your Diesel in April,” says Mike Fitzpatrick. “Allen is a GM master certified diesel technician and engine repair expert.” Allen was born in Seattle, moved to Spokane, Washington with his family when he was a child, and spent a four-year tour of duty with the U.S. Navy, completing boot camp in Florida on the U.S.S. Independence and then heading back to San Diego. After fulfilling his military duty, he spent 20 years in San Diego before moving to Seattle. While growing up, Allen enjoyed being a non-dealership mechanic. In 2005, he went to work for his first automobile dealership, specializing in diesel repair and service. Allen says he has done plenty of diesel injector work and admits that the newer diesel engines are “not as needy” as their predecessors. “In the old days, it seems there were always issues with fuel injectors,” he said, “but they are hardly a problem today.” Allen is Classic’s expert with GM’s diesel truck products.
GM keeps both Allen and co-worker Denzel Hathcoat educated and up to date on diesel concerns or problems that might have been registered by GM’s nationwide network of diesel technicians. “If ever I should see something for the first time,” said Allen, “it’s reassuring to know that we are backed by a nationwide network of diesel experts who do just what we do every day – work on GM diesel engines.” When asked how long a diesel could provide service to its owner, Allen gave the following information and advice. “It is not uncommon to see diesel trucks in for service with up to 350,000 miles on them. Take care of them by doing the manufacturer recommended services, and they should serve you for a long time.” Both Allen and Mike have seen diesels with 400,000 to 500,000 miles. Just like the gasoline-powered vehicles on the road today, the newer diesels have advanced electronics to aid performance and provide service
information. Mike says a friend of Allen’s had moved to the Tulsa metro area, and Mike had helped him find a job. When the friend heard that Allen was moving to Oklahoma, he called Mike and steered Allen toward Classic Chevrolet. After a thorough interview, Allen was offered a position in Classic’s service department. The United States has seen a real need for diesel technicians the past several years, and Classic was in the right place at the right time when Allen Workman was referred to them. The friend who had recommended Allen to Classic called Mike and said, “We are even. My debt is paid with Classic’s hiring of Allen!”

Need a Body Coach? Cornerstone Shopping Center. Whether you are 70 years old and need to build functional strength, you are overweight and have never exercised a day in your life, you’re a high school or college athlete wanting to take your routine to the next level, or you’re recovering from an injury that prevents you from being as active as you’d like, Jason is well qualified and eager to help you reach your goals. He works with all fitness levels. Body Coach is divided into three options: boot camp, personal training, and seniors training. Boot camp is a high-intensity cardio workout that includes strength and conditioning exercises. The co-ed program is designed for a wide range of fitness levels – it’s great for ladies who simply want to tone up for bikini season, men and women who need to lose a lot of weight, or football players looking to build strength and endurance for the game. Jason was a wrestler for 14 years, played football for 10, and ran track; as a result, he has specialized knowledge in helping athletes reach their maximum potential. “The primary focus of boot camp is on the core, which
is the cornerstone of whole body fitness for everyone,” adds Jason. The boot camp classes are

and personal training programs, you don’t have to sign a long-term contract. You can do the program for as long or as short of a time as you wish,” says Jason. For those interested in one-on-one training, Jason offers
personal training each day from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Appointments can be scheduled for half-hour or hour-long sessions at the Body Coach location. According to Jason, his seniors training program is one that he finds extremely rewarding. “This program is specifically for older clients who want to build functional strength and conditioning and improve their coordination.” Seniors training is an hourlong group class held on Tuesdays and Thursdays. “One day focuses on upper body and the other day is lower body. This program can be for anyone with no experience lifting weights and in a beginning level of fitness; it introduces them to proper form. This is also a good option for those who have had injuries or surgery such as knee replacement,” says Jason. In addition to personal training and fitness management certification, Jason’s background includes three years of chiropractic care, specializing in spinal and extremity rehabilitation. A key element of Jason’s programs is nutritional support. “Eighty-five percent of fitness is what you eat. Regardless of how

He also provides high-quality protein drinks and organic Genesis Pure supplements, which clients may purchase on site or order as a package that is delivered to their home. Jason shares that his work is truly gratifying, and he loves to see the transformation of people’s lives. “My goal is to improve the quality of life for as many people as possible. It’s incredible to see someone change their life through fitness; for example, going off a list of medications or developing an active lifestyle after being sedentary for years. It’s so rewarding to be able to help people add quality years to their lives.” Give Jason a call at (918) 609-6868 to learn more about the Body Coach programs. For more information, contact

GGive Mom the Gift of Beauty Dr. Mallory Spoor-Baker of Advanced Cosmetic Medicine says Botox is a quick, popular treatment for improving your appearance and making you look younger. By Sheryl Sowell Are you searching for the perfect Mother’s Day gift? Flowers and jewelry are always a lovely gesture, but they can be a little on the ordinary side. If you want to give your mom a unique gift she will love, or even if you want to treat yourself this Mother’s Day, call Advanced Cosmetic Medicine about the gift of Botox. According to Dr. Mallory Spoor-Baker, Botox is one of the quickest, most popular treatments for improving your appearance and giving you a more youthful look. “Deep lines between the between the eyes cause you to appear tired or angry, even when your face is still. By injecting tiny amounts of Botox into a specific facial muscle, only the targeted impulse of that muscle will be blocked, causing a local relaxation and weakness. In this way, the muscle is immobilized, thus preventing wrinkly expressions. Within three days, that area will be flatter and smoother, and you will look more relaxed,” says Dr. Spoor-Baker. Botox
treatments last from three to six months. An area of Botox typically includes frown lines, forehead lines and crow’s feet lines. Treating your frown lines, alone, will make you look fresher and more relaxed. “Botox is one of our most popular treatments, especially during the spring and summer, when everyone has so many social gatherings such as graduations to attend,” says Dr. Spoor-Baker. Millions of men and women of all skin colors and ethnicities have realized the benefits of being treated with Botox. Results are visible, but Botox will not radically change your facial appearance or make you look as if you’ve “had work done.” When administered by an experienced physician such as Dr. Spoor-Baker, you can still smile, frown, and look surprised without those lines between your brows. Botox is a quick and minimally invasive procedure
consisting of only a few tiny injections. Dr. Spoor-Baker will determine exactly where to administer these injections to achieve the best results for you. No anesthesia is required, and the entire procedure takes approximately 10 minutes. There is no downtime afterward; you may resume normal activity immediately. Discomfort is minimal and brief – most patients compare the sensation to a bug bite. You can expect to see results within days after your treatment, and the appearance of the area between your brows may continue to improve for up to a week. “Botox is a perfect solution to improve your appearance, as it is fast and effective, with minimal discomfort and no downtime,” says Dr. Spoor-Baker. “With Botox, people will notice that you look more relaxed. You will even feel more relaxed. With repeat Botox treatments in the first year, those pesky lines can be gone,” adds Dr. Spoor-Baker.
Give the gift of Botox this Mother’s Day – for mom or as a treat for yourself. Consider giving your mother – or yourself! – a more youthful appearance for Mother’s Day. Call Advanced Cosmetic Medicine at (918) 280-0270 to schedule a consultation or to learn more.

FFostering Hope
Choices for Life will show appreciation to its foster parents with a dinner banquet on May 3 to celebrate National Foster Care Month.
By Sheryl Sowell Foster parents are truly special individuals. They take in children from abusive or neglectful situations who require therapy for medical or psychological conditions, and they stick with these kids to provide them with the love and care that many have never known. Foster parents with Choices for Life Foster Care in Sapulpa give of themselves 24 hours a day, seven days a week. But on Thursday, May 3, they will be on the receiving end of a special appreciation banquet. As part of National Foster Care Month in May, Choices for Life will honor all 40 of its foster parents. The theme of the evening this year is black tie, and the event gives the foster parents an opportunity to get all dolled up and enjoy a night out for themselves while Choices for Life therapists watch the kids. The appreciation dinner not only recognizes the generosity and commitment of foster parents, but also raises awareness about the need for more families who are willing to open their homes and hearts to these children. “Raising children is hard enough,” says Lara King, clinical
supervisor at Choices for Life. “Therapeutic needs create a whole new dynamic.” Unlike traditional foster care, Choices for Life focuses on children with a higher level of emotional and behavioral needs. Not everyone

of the most thrilling and rewarding experiences in their lives, as they watch a troubled child blossom into a loving and responsible individual. Lara is happy to report that one of their most recent success stories is a set of young sisters, 6 and 8 years old, who recently returned to their parents’ custody after 13 months in foster care. Choices for Life is a national agency with offices in Georgia, Oklahoma City, Checotah, Ponca City and Sapulpa. There are currently 50 children in the Sapulpa program. Many others are in shelters waiting for placement. A new foster care class begins soon. Catch Some Fun at Crawfest
Cajun Ed’s Hebert’s Specialty Meats will host the 12th annual Crawfest to benefit Therapetics Service Dogs of Oklahoma.
By Deanna Rebro It’s party time on May 19, when Cajun Ed’s Hebert’s Specialty Meats hosts its 12th annual Crawfest. Owner Ed Richard, a Louisiana native who knows how to combine good food and a good party, invites everyone to join the fun at the big red house at 2101 E. 71st St. This celebration of crawfish harvest, a longtime Louisiana tradition, features authentic Cajun food like no other in Tulsa. Menu items include boiled crawfish, crawfish etouffee, crawfish boudin, crawfish tamales, crawfish tacos, red beans and rice, smoked sausage sandwiches, corn maque choux, shrimp kabobs and bread pudding. More than a ton and a half of crawfish, shipped from Louisiana, will be boiled, fried or sold raw during the festival. Cajun Ed is once again happy to donate a portion of the festival’s food and beverage proceeds to Therapetics Service Dogs of Oklahoma. This Tulsabased nonprofit organization trains dogs to serve Oklahomans with disabilities that limit their
mobility. Among many other things, the dogs learn to open and close doors, pull a wheelchair, turn lights on and off, and
Hartman, executive director of Therapetics, it costs approximately $15,000 to train each dog for as long as two years

so it can provide eight to ten years of service to an individual. Therapetics offers the dogs
www.ValueNews.com without charge to qualified applicants. “The number of dogs that we can train and place every year is solely dependent on our budget,” she explains. Therapetics, now in its twentieth year, is placing eight to ten dogs per year. Last year’s graduating class was the largest ever, with 12 “graduates.” There are 23 currently in training. Cajun Ed’s goal is to raise $15,000 to support one dog’s entire training. Many of the dogs will be on hand to meet and greet everyone. Kristina Kendall, a Therapetics volunteer trainer, will have Phoenix, a three-yearold breeder for the program. Phoenix will be bred in August. But another dog, Vicki, should have five new yellow lab puppies to introduce – at least by photos – at the festival. Volunteers will also introduce three German Shepherd puppies who will be trained specifically for service to war vets. “We are very blessed to have a wonderful community with business owners like Cajun Ed who support our work so that our clients are not charged for the dog they need,” says Susan. Crawfest offers a big fat happy event that the whole family can enjoy. Rain or shine, Cajun Ed’s Hebert’s Specialty Meats parking lot will be covered with a giant tent that will encompass a Jupiter Jump, face painting and crawfish races for the kids. The crawfish eating contest is sure to draw lots of
video cameras to capture the laughter, applause and embarrassment for some of the participants. Those who cannot attend the festival can still get crawfish to go, ready to eat or to boil at home with all the authentic mixes such as Louisiana Fish Fry Products, Swamp Dust, Zatarain’s and Ball’s Cajun Seasoning. Shipments of fresh crawfish arrive from Louisiana every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. “People can get them live, boiled or cooked. Any way they want them, we’ll have them,” says Cajun Ed. The 12th annual Crawfest gets under way at 11 a.m. and ends at 7 p.m. Enjoy good food, a good time and support a good cause. Live music, including the toe-tapping sounds of the Jambalaya Jazz Band, will lead the way to the big red house just west of 71st and Lewis. On regular business days, Cajun Ed’s Hebert’s opens at 10 a.m. Lunch specials are served Monday through Friday. Café au lait, with authentic beignets, is featured from 10 to noon on Saturdays, and dinner is served Monday through Saturday. For more information, contact
