KICK UP YOUR CONFIDENCE BY CHRIS BEACH

A

lmost every parent hopes and wishes for their children to succeed in living out their life dreams. It’s just what they do. But no matter what measures parents take to protect their children, somewhere along the line young boys and girls experience a terribly embarrassing moment – whether at school or home or otherwise – that dashes their confidence and they slowly detour from their dreams and goals. The staff at Martial Arts Academy in Owasso knows this, which is why they love working with kids on their confidence. “Rebuilding confidence is crucial and it starts the moment a child shows up in class,” Owner and Senior Chief Instructor Chris Velez says. “Everyone here knows what it is like to have to overcome those feelings which leads to a very safe, unintimidating, encouraging environment that allows a student to just try.” Martial Arts Academy in Owasso offers a fun and practical solution for confidence restoration. Chris and his team of instructors for 14 years have instilled confidence-building components into each of the activities performed by the hundreds of students who have come through their doors. At Martial Arts Academy, instructors become mentors and begin providing the students a constant series of challengeand-success opportunities over and over again to help condition 8

each child to develop tenacity, perseverance, and patience. Chris says soon the children will naturally begin to envision themselves as being successful and will learn to not quit in life. Parents can also enjoy the benefit of watching their children experience an elevated level of etiquette, maturity and selfcontrol at Martial Arts Academy. As a result, students achieve improved grades and productivity. And since the program is designed for those who have zero experience and fitness level, the entry process is quite easy. In fact, Martial Arts Academy offers first-timers a rare treat: a free tour, free personal analysis and determine training goals, followed by a free private lesson. “We invite everyone to visit,” Velez says. “There’s nothing to lose. If it is a good fit, you can enroll. You can even just try it for 30 days.” Martial Arts Academy is at 9100 North Garnett Road in Owasso. Classes are in the evening Monday to Thursday, and Saturday morning. Velez says consistency is more important than frequency, so it is best for a student to take a regular 1-2 days a week of classes. Push away confidence issues in your child’s life today and call Martial Arts Academy.

Martial Arts Academy instructors include (L to R): Tara Modrell, Program Director, Second Degree Black Belt; Eric Buckendorf, Chief Instructor Tulsa Location, Third Degree Black Belt; Chris Velez, Senior Chief Instructor, Fifth Degree Black Belt.

Students of Martial Arts Academy (L to R): Keith Davis, Third Degree Black Belt; Lexi Vincent, Second Degree Black Belt; Samantha Bible, Second Degree Black Belt.

Q & A with Financial Advisor Linda Rainwater Q: A:

I am 19 years old. Do I need a financial advisor? Marvelous Maribeth

It really depends on what you want in life. For example, one individual I know lives on the first $200,000 of income each year and gives the rest to charities that are dear to his heart. It’s not about the money but rather the life you choose to lead. There are many approaches to money, from doing it yourself to having a financial coach help you through life’s challenges. Many individuals do not seek out additional knowledge and this can affect them and their family for many years. The more you understand about money, the more likely you are to build substantial income and financial security. If you want income from stocks, bonds and CD’s, it is smart to visit several advisors to obtain their recommendations and determine how they will help you. Will they help you learn or just sell you investments? Are they successful in their own investments? Is your goal to own a business or obtain income from real estate? Then you will want to select an advisor who is personally thriving in these areas. You can learn from a book, from the internet, or choose to have a mentor help you achieve financial success. Having a financial advisor who provides a deep financial education helps give you more information and more choices in life.

FAMILY MATTERS BY ERICA LUDWIG

I

t’s no secret that life never stops moving. There’s no way to stop your kids, or your family from growing, all you can do is put in the work and hope for the best. Wade Reeves of Wade’s RV, knows this very well. After serving Northeast Oklahoma and the Tulsa area for over 30 years, the business owner and father of five is making room for even more growth thanks to a new sales lot located at 161st and highway 75 in Glenpool. “This second location has opened up more possibilities for us,” said Wade. “We are able to better serve our clients and get our jobs done quicker.” Customers can expect two different environments of sales and service at each of the Wade’s RV locations. Whether you’re an outdoorsman looking for some service on your camper, or parents getting ready for the family road trip of a lifetime, the team at Wade’s wants to provide you with a facility to

accommodate your needs. “It’s like the best of both worlds,” said Wade. “We listened to our customers on what they needed from us, and that has greatly impacted the growth of the stores. This new sales store has more parking availability and space for clients to view more products in a more relaxed environment.” Thanks to the expansion, Wade’s RV has been able to create more space for indoor storage at the new location with all enclosed, custom services. The business also does RV repair, consignment and parts. “It’s more than just storage, it’s a service,” said Wade. “You can bring your unit in and we can take care of the rest, or if you want us to just park it for you, we can do that. We like to think of it like a custom-made concierge for your RV.” The added space also allows for more inventory with selection. Wade’s RV offers a variety of pre-

In fact, three of his five children work with him. Daughter Amanda Bryant serves in accounting, while his youngest, Maggie Reeves, works as an office assistant after school, and Wade R. Reeves, or “Little Wade”, is under the mentorship of his father, doing everything from selling RVs to social media management. “My favorite thing about this job is helping people,” said Little Wade. “I love engaging people with our mission. I just love to see how the things we do as a company and a family bring smiles to customers.” This summer, Wade’s RV is partnering with Channel 2 on a family road trips segment, where Little Wade will be shooting on location at resorts such as Shangri La. Look for them in an RV with the Wade’s RV and Channel 2 logos every other weekend in June. You can also find Wade’s RV at the Great Outdoor Recreation Show May 20-21 at the Tulsa Expo Center. he results are in! From our office, we’d like to say thank you to everyone who entered the contest. Our staff has been reviewing your mother daughter look alike entries and we can feel the love. Out of numerous submissions, three winners were chosen in a random drawing for our grand prizes from The Pink House in Claremore and Edible Arrangements. But we just couldn’t help ourselves from featuring some more fabulous contestants in this month’s issue. See if you can spot you and your mom! Congratulations to all the winners, and don’t forget Mother’s Day this Sunday, May 14!

1ST PLACE LINDSAY MICHALE I am a 17 year old Home-schooled Senior. This is my mom Marion Lindsay. I love my mom cause she has always been there for me. She is my best friend.

2ND PLACE LAUREN SMITH Pretty much whenever we go out together we get told we look like sisters! My mom is the most loving, caring and selfless person I have ever met. We are so alike in so many ways - not just our appearance - and I am so thankful that I was lucky enough to be blessed with a mother like her.

3RD PLACE KAREE COGGINS Everyone says I am the spitting image of my mother. My mom is a selfless, loving mom and wife to my dad. She loves to trout fish and flea market shop and weekend in the RV. She’s beautiful in every way. I sure do love her to the moon and back! MAY 2017 OWASSO & COLLINSVILLE

hen it comes to finding an optometrist, not all practices are created equal. Primary Eye Care Associates has been serving Owasso and the surrounding community for 50 years, spanning generations of families. The practice run by Drs. Hinkle and Cash is known for its quality of service and wide selection of products. Both doctors were born in raised in the Owasso area and have raised their own families in town as well. “I actually got into optometry after spending some time with my American Legion baseball coach,” said Dr. David Cash. “I was on track to study engineering in college, but after talking with him about what he does as an optometrist, I

became more interested in the subject and decided to go to the University of Houston, where I graduated from optometry school in 1977.” Primary Eye Care’s services include comprehensive eye exams, children’s vision, dilated diabetic exams, laser vision correction and treatment of conditions and diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, dry eye, trauma and cataracts.

As partners, Drs Hinkle and Cash have lead Owasso and Northeastern Oklahoma in the fight for better visual health care. They continue to learn new approaches and techniques to enhance quality patient care.

“We work with many Ophthalmologists from Tulsa and the surrounding areas,” said Dr. Cash. “ This really helps patients who can’t necessarily drive into town. We also provide postcataract care and follow up.” The practice offers a variety of lenses and contacts, including popular brands such as Bebe, Gwen Stefani, Realtree, Callaway and Dailies Total One contacts. One of the most notable qualities of Primary Eye Care is the longevity of its staff. Many employees have been with the practice for at least a decade if not longer. They aim to make each client’s visit a positive one. “Staff can make or break these experiences,” says Dr. Cash. “We want to provide the best customer service in a world that doesn’t necessarily do that

anymore. We still see it as important, and our clients appreciate that.” Though the practice has been in Owasso for 50 years, Primary Eye Care continues to keep up with the latest technology in leading eye care. “We still stay up to date on everything,” said DeAnne Brown, Certified Paraoptometric. “We adapt as technology does because we know that generation after generation is coming back to our practice, and we want to take care of them as best we can.” Keep your future clear and call Primary Eye Care Associates today.

Don’t forget the sunscreen! Here are some safety tips, courtsey of State Farm, to remember when out and about with the family. We encourage you to soak up the summer sun with your loved ones, but knowing when to take a break can be just as fulfilling. Have fun, stay hydrated and keep cool this summer.

SUNSCREEN Though it may seem minor, sunscreen is necessary to avoid painful sunburns and lasting skin damage, which can eventually lead to skin cancer. Fifteen minutes is all it takes for the sun to begin damaging your skin. Apply sunscreen 15-20 minutes before sun exposure and two hours after every application, swimming or

sweating. Be sure to toss your sunscreen if it’s more than three years old, the expiration date has passed, the color or consistency has changed or the container has been exposed to high temperatures.

OT H E R S A F E T Y T I P S • Stay cool at home by checking the air conditioning. Make sure it is properly working and insulated. Also use fans strategically. Ceiling fans should run counter-clockwise to force room air down and make you feel cooler. • Drink plenty of water and other fluids and try to avoid alcohol, caffeine and carbonated drinks that can lead to dehydration. • Beware of heat-related illness by knowing the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

• Never leave a person or a pet in a parked car. Temperatures inside can reach up to 190°F within 30 minutes on a hot, sunny day. • The best place to be is inside with air conditioning. If you don’t have any at home, many public places are air-conditioned.

PUTTING RCB BANK ON THE MAP BY SEANA WARREN

t’s hard to believe that a successful bank with more than 50 locations in two states, and over $2.7 billion in assets came from such humble beginnings. After the stock market crash in 1929, the Great Depression rocked the nation. Unprecedented drought ravaged the state of Oklahoma and oil prices fell. By the mid-1930’s, only one bank existed in Claremore, Oklahoma, the First National Bank. “It was a terrible time,” said Frank Robson, RCB Board Member and son of Rogers County Bank founder L.S. Robson. “By 1934, my dad had encumbered himself with a lot of debt from ranch and oil investments.” L.S. Robson sought a loan with $15,000 in securities, but was only offered a loan of $500. He picked up his securities, thanked the banker and left. But then it hit him, if Claremore and the community was ever going to grow, credit had to be available to people. L.S. Robson spent the next year accumulating $25,000 startup money from investors, including drugstore owner, S.C. Vincent, County Treasurer Anne Settle, Livestock man Ben Lowry and banker Guy Bayless, and oilman J. B. Milam. The money was used for a charter bank called Rogers County Bank. It was the only bank in Oklahoma to receive a charter in 1936. On January 4, 1936,

I

Rogers County Bank opened with a promise to “furnish banking facilities – friendly service and progressive in spirit.” RCB Bank’s relationship building didn’t stop with Claremore. Expansions into the surrounding communities like Pryor, Catoosa, Inola and Owasso gave way to more expansion to Tulsa, Broken Arrow, Skiatook and Collinsville. In recent years, even more communities have joined the RCB Bank family like Bartlesville, Stroud and Norman; and, even more expansion into the state of Kansas. Who knows what the growth will be for RCB Bank in the next 80 years, but one thing is for certain, the priority will always be to the community and relationships with their customers.

osh Shrum, Tulsa New Holland’s new Service Manager has spent most of his life working around lawn and garden and agricultural equipment and the people who use that equipment. Now, Tosh is using his years of experience to provide top-notch service to the growing number of customers coming to Tulsa New Holland for all their equipment, parts and service needs. “I grew up with the people who worked on the farms around here,” Tosh says. “My Step Mom was Service Manager at a Farm Equipment Dealership and she was very good at her job. I learned a lot just being around her and after high school, I went to work with her. For most of 10 years I learned about the importance of providing prompt service to farmers and ranchers whenever

T

their equipment broke down. Our customers make their living with the equipment we sell and they can’t afford down time. I provide my customers with my cell phone number so that they can contact me after hours whenever they need our help.” Tosh’s customer focus is what led Tulsa New Holland’s Travis McCrate to hire Tosh to manage the dealership’s Service Department. “The Service Manager plays a key role here at Tulsa New Holland,” Travis says. “Our customers really want a Service Manager they can depend on, someone they know will be available to help them whenever they need help. Tosh’s background and the fact that he worked for the same company for 10 years helped us reach our

decision to hire Tosh as Service Manager.” Tulsa New Holland has a history of providing the very best customer support available, the Company’s 18 President’s Awards are proof of that and that commitment to customer service is a perfect fit for Tosh. He loves the fact that Tulsa New Holland is committed to 24 hour availability on most repair parts and the fact that 24 hour emergency service is available on most of the Ag equipment sold by the dealership. “Tulsa New Holland has been Oklahoma’s premier New Holland Dealership since 1983.” says Travis. Travis has worked 14 years for Mike McCrate, his Father who has over 42 years retail experience in the industry, 30 of those years at Tulsa New Holland. “Travis said, Tulsa New Holland’s slogan is, “Your Partner for Life,” and that slogan is our guiding principle.

We have customers who have been doing business with Tulsa New Holland since the store opened in 1983 and we work hard to build and maintain longterm customer relationships.” Tulsa New Holland is proud of the lineup of equipment the dealership sells; New Holland Agriculture equipment, New Holland Construction equipment, Mahindra tractors and equipment, the full lineup of Cub Cadet equipment, Bush Hog and Woods equipment. FINANCIALLY FIT A CAR BUYER’S MISTAKE BY JOCELYN WOOD

uying a car is a major purchase. Budgets are tight. It’s tempting to accept financing based on the lowest monthly payment, but don’t. Here’s why. Lower monthly payments often mean longer loan terms and higher interest rates. You may be able to obtain 84-month term (7 year) financing and a budget-friendly monthly payment, but you’ll pay more over the life of the loan. You also risk becoming upside down on your loan, owing more money for your car than it is worth. “Don’t be payment-driven,” says Kelly Ailey, lender, RCB Bank. “Save up as much as you can and negotiate the sales price down, not the monthly payment.” To keep your car buying costs as low as possible, Ailey offers these tips.

B

KNOW YOUR CREDIT SCORE More importantly, know the details in your report. Your credit score will determine which loan you will qualify for and the interest rate you’ll pay. Start reducing your current debt now to improve your score and financing options. GET PRE-APPROVED Know the exact amount you can spend before you start looking (and stay under that number). Start with your financial institution and shop around. A banker can also access car evaluations to improve 34 |

VALUES

your bargaining power with the dealership. FOCUS ON PRICE Know what the car is worth, not what the dealer tells you it is worth. Do your homework. Check NADA guides. Shop online. Compare dealers. View the car evaluation with your banker. Then go to the dealership and negotiate a fair purchase price for the car, not your loan payment. DECIDE NEEDS VERSUS WANTS Do you want the pricey 2017 model or are you willing to accept a less expensive model and save more money? New or used, save up as much money as possible before you shop. You’ll be able to borrow less money and pay a higher monthly payment with a lower loan term. Both will save you money. Avoid the payment-driven temptation and start saving up now for your next vehicle. In the meantime, explore your financing options and ask your banker what you can do to improve your credit score. One final piece of advice Ailey offers: “Don’t be afraid to walk off the lot.” “Don’t rush your decision and accept the first offer,” Ailey said. “It’s your money and your life. Be good to yourself.” RCB BANK (855) BANK-RCB | RCBBANK.COM

BOOTS AND BBQ

BY SEANA WARREN

I

f you live in the South, chances are you’re serious about your barbeque. The Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS) means business, too. In fact, they sanction barbeque competitions all over the United States, including Claremore’s Boots and BBQ Festival. Prizes total up to $7500 and points towards KCBS Championship status. The Claremore Reveille Rotary Club, Visit Claremore, RCB Bank, Walke Brothers Meats, Jack Kissee Ford, Tulsa Stockyards, Utility Cable Communications, BancFirst, Stillwater Milling, Johnny LeonardCentury 21, and Community Home Health are all sponsoring the sanctioned KCBS cook-off in the twelfth annual Boots

and BBQ Festival. The event will take place June 3 at the Claremore Expo Center from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. KCBS certified judges will be on hand to adjudicate the 40+ barbeque cooks looking for the winning recipes in appearance, taste and tenderness. People’s Choice taster kits will be available for purchase starting at 1:00 p.m., with tasting to start at 2:00 p.m. Adult taster kits are $10 and children 12 and under are $6. You can stroll along and test each cook’s recipes. After sampling, you can vote for People’s Choice in which the winner will receive a cash prize of $200. There’s even something for local barbeque cooks,

Left to right: Club Members Richard Mosier, Ron Burrows, Roger Fleming, Rick Elliott, Clarice Doyle, Roger Evens, Jacob Krumweide, Steve Gragert, Jeanne Heidlage and Ron McVicar. Front Row: Angie Graves, Rogers County Salvation Army; Rotarians Leesa Dickson, Sam Nichols, Barry Knight and Ron McVicar.

the Backyard BBQ Competition. Anyone not registered in the KCBS is welcome to participate for first place bragging rights. Other than registration and the taster kits, the event is free and open to the public. Area vendors will be on hand, along with music and a kid’s area for hours of fun. But the real winners are the kids of Rogers County. All proceeds from the Boots and BBQ Festival go directly into every school in the county. “It’s our mission to help local schools enhance young student education”, said Tanya Andrews, director of Visit Claremore/Claremore Expo Center, and Reveille Rotary Club member. “We use every penny of the proceeds to offer four to five scholarships to area

seniors, each year. We purchase 10,000 pencils that are distributed to all schools in Rogers County. This year we received a matching grant from Rotary International and together gave $6,000 to the Rogers County Salvation Army for their Food 4 Kids Backpack program”. Additionally, Reveille Rotary gives every third grader in Rogers County a personalized dictionary. Cooks can register for the KCBS Competition or the Backyard BBQ Competition up to June 2 on check-in day. Registrations forms for cooks and vendors are available online or by telephone request.
