BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT

I

t’s that time of year again. Friday night lights, Saturday game day tailgate parties, the cooler days of Fall and the leaves changing colors. I love this time of year. It is our family’s favorite. With football starting and hunting season just around the corner life is full of hope and promise. Just as it requires preparation to get ready to play in that big game; so too, it takes preparation when planning for that “big day” of retirement. The last few years preceding retirement and the first few years immediately following retirement, is what we call “the retirement red zone”. The reason we call it the red zone is because these years are most crucial to the outcome of your financial retirement success. It’s just like in football where the red zone is the last 20 yards before crossing the goal and is critical to winning or defeat, the last few years before and after your retirement can make you or break you. It’s during this time that you need to develop a careful, drawn-out strategic plan….a GAME PLAN. Your playbook should be detailed with all the x’s and o’s and provide a careful strategy for how much you need to have saved, what debt you need to have paid off, what your budget is now and what it will be, and a specific plan for how to replace your income in retirement. Your playbook

should include multiple investment strategies to both defend against losses and advance toward your goals. These years often require sacrifice in order to meet the goal line, and a great coach to help get you there. We want to help you make your retirement a winning success!

35 YEARS STRONG COMMUNITY & CHIROPRACTIC CARE IN OWASSO

BY AERON TRAYLOR

D

r. Russell Cox, owner of Cox Chiropractic, grew up working on his parent’s ranch just a few miles north of Owasso in Talala, Ok. Originally, he planned to go into Orthopedic medicine, but he was injured in an accident on the ranch when he was 17. He tried several methods of recovery, but the only thing that helped was Chiropractic care. Once he knew how much it helps people, he fell in love with it and decided to be a Chiropractor instead of going into Orthopedic medicine. On October 10, 2017 it will have been 35 years since he chose to open his practice in Owasso. He also has deep family ties to the Owasso community. Mills elementary is named after his uncle, Jeff Mills. He was also a long time School Board Member at Owasso Public Schools.

Owasso was once a small town with a thriving community, and he has enjoyed watching it become the flourishing city it is today. The thing he enjoys most about his practice are the people, because over the years they have become like family to him. He is very appreciative of his staff. His office manager Diana Ary has been with him for 5 years. Dr. Cox said, “Diana keeps things running so that I can do my thing. I get to concentrate on taking care of the patient’s needs because she does such a fabulous job.” His wife Christina has recently incorporated essential oils into the practice. She enjoys helping people with a holistic approach in conjunction with chiropractic care. Christina also works to assist with disaster relief efforts. She is currently working to assist

the communities affected by the recent hurricaines. Dr. Cox has two children. His daughter, Lindsey, inherited his entrepreneurial spirit. She and her husband own two businesses in the Edmond area and they have a daughter and a son. They live in Oklahoma City. His son Chris always had a joke on his lips and a smile on his face. When Chris passed away this past April, the outpouring of love and sympathy from the Owasso community meant a lot to him, his wife Christina and Chris’ eight year old daughter. They received over 500 cards from people throughout the community. This made him realize that people really care. “You make some good friends,” he said. “It’s not just about the medicine. It is about the relationships you build. We are so thankful for the love Owasso has shown to us over the years.” The compassion he was shown by the Owasso community helped him cope with this loss. Dr. Cox looks forward to serving the Owasso community for years to come.

fter working part-time at a liquor store in Sand Springs, Oklahoma, Jason Hower received an offer to be the store’s manager. He jumped at the opportunity and dove into the liquor world head first… He hasn’t looked back since. In 2014, he opened Kwenchers in Owasso. For him, opening and owning a liquor store has been a dream come true and a return home to the retail and agricultural lifestyle he grew up in. According to Hower, he couldn’t have found a better city or location to open his store. “Owasso just reminded me of home. It’s a growing city with a lot to offer, but has that small-town feel. You couldn’t ask for a better community. The people of Owasso are easy to serve.” At Kwenchers, you can support local Oklahoma breweries, wineries, and distilleries. 12 |

Hower believes in Oklahoma small business – a fact made evident as soon as you walk into his store. Hower opted to promote local products in the busiest spot in his store; a spot where most stores would stock their top-shelf products. He said, “I’m a small Oklahoma business, so I want to do whatever I can to support other small Oklahoma businesses. We’re all in this together.” Customer service is the heart of Kwenchers. When you walk in, you’re instantly greeted with kind words and a warm smile. Whatever you’re looking for, we want you to have fun doing it,” he said. Kwenchers’ logo is a tugboat, meaning they’ll get you where you need to go. Not sure what you want? No problem. Kwenchers has a taste room where highly educated sales associates can recommend a beverage to suit your tastes and

needs. For Hower, educated and accommodating team members are of utmost priority. True to their motto, Kwenchers’ staff truly are ‘the spirited experts.’ “When you walk out of our store, we want to make sure you’re leaving with something you want, and something you’ll really like,” he said, “I know what it’s like to have a six-pack sitting in my fridge for weeks because I hated the beer. Having a staff that will recommend what you want, not just want they want to sell, takes the stress off of you.” Stop by Kwenchers today for the spirited experience!

OLD FASHIONED VALUES MEET MODERN CONVENIENCE

hen you enter Owasso Drug, you are greeted with a friendly ‘hello’ and a smile. A few more trips through the front door will likely net you a greeting by name. A sliding glass window is in place at the drive-thru for prescription pickup rather than a speaker and for good reason: “It’s more personable. Conversation is clearer, and we can reach out and shake people’s hands and thank them,” explains Ryan Flanary, co-owner and pharmacist at Owasso Drug. It is in these little details— the commitment to old-fashioned customer service— that it becomes obvious why Owasso Drug is quickly becoming Owasso’s hometown pharmacy. “We treat every customer like family,” states Flanary. Though Owasso Drug, as an independent pharmacy, is smaller in size than its corporate competitors, it rivals them in being able to serve its customers with modern conveniences. For instance, they have their very own Owasso Drug App available for

The reception by the community has been overwhelming and continues to grow. “I think as an independent pharmacy you have a lot more flexibility in getting to know your customers and meeting their needs.” Recognizing the importance of community, Owasso Drug tries to give back by supporting various local educators as well as promoting other local businesses in drawings and fun gift card giveaways. Adorning its walls is Owasso Drug’s straightforward philosophy: Fast. Friendly and Caring. And true to its words, Owasso Drug is just that.

Outsmart Identity How to Outsmart Iden ty Thieves

October is Cyber Security Awareness Month BY JOCELYN WOOD

Every two seconds there is a new victim of identity fraud.*

D

on’t wait for a criminal to steal your identity before you take action. Guard your ID with these preventative measures.

Monitor bank account and credit card statements regularly. Lookout for suspicious or unauthorized activity. “Watch closely for small amounts on your account activity,” said Assistant Vice President Fraud Denise Meyer, RCB Bank. “Fraudsters will make little purchases or withdrawals with various odd merchant names hoping you won’t notice.” Set up text alerts to notify you whenever a transaction occurs on your bank or credit card accounts.

Check your free credit reports. Federal law allows you to request a free copy of your credit report once a year from each of the three national credit reporting companies (CRC). Request a copy online at www.annualcreditreport.com or call 1.877.322.8228. Space out requests throughout the year to provide regular updates on your credit. See who is making inquiries on your credit. If it’s not a person or company you gave permission to, your information may be compromised.

Place a fraud alert/credit freeze with CRC. When you have an alert on your report, a business must verify your identity before it issues credit, so it may try to contact you, according to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Q&A

with Financial Advisor Linda Rainwater

Q: How long has Raymond James been around?

A: A lot of people find themselves surprised when I answer this, but Raymond James started the same year as Wal-Mart, 1962! Since then, both companies have persisted through volatile markets and grown internationally. Raymond James now has over 7,100 financial advisors serving over 3 million clients in almost 3,000 offices around the world. I took this information very seriously when it came time to choose a brokerage firm. Today, I know I made the right decision as Generation Income Strategies has joined a legacy of helping others for over 55 years.

and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatment are moving us closer to a world free of MS. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, with at least two to three times more women than men being diagnosed with the disease. MS affects more than 2.3 million people worldwide. The Society mobilizes people and resources so that everyone affected by multiple sclerosis can live their best lives as we stop MS in its tracks, restore what has been lost and end MS forever. Last year alone, through our comprehensive nationwide network of services, the Society devoted more than $100 million to connect approximately one million people affected by MS to the connections, information and resources they need. We are united in our collective power to do something about MS now and end this disease forever. Early and ongoing treatment with an FDA-approved therapy can make a difference for people with multiple sclerosis. Learn about your options by talking to your health care professional and contacting the National MS Society today.

HATS OFF TO WILL: RELIVE THE PAST

BY AMY BETH DOBBINS

n a summer evening in 1899, a group of Cherokee youth gathered for two reasons: to hold the charter meeting of The Pocahontas Club and to dance the night away in a newly-raised barn in Rogers County. What started as a social club, however, has evolved into so much more over the past 100 plus years. The Indian Women’s Pocahontas Club (IWPC) currently boasts approximately 200 Cherokee women, ranging from age 18 to 101. The intergenerational group hosts multiple events open to the public along with monthly membership meetings. The purpose of each activity is clear: “…to promote and preserve our Cherokee history and culture and to focus on higher education for Cherokee students,” explains Ollie Starr, IWPC Event Coordinator. Annual events include, among others: the Old Fashioned Picnic each May at Will Rogers Birthplace Ranch in Oologah; an annual Tea and Wild Onion Feast as well as weekly art classes offered at the Boys and Girls Club of Chelsea. One of the most notable events each year hosted by the IWPC, 24 |

however, is the Hats Off to Will gala, paying tribute to the late Will Rogers as well as his family members. This year, Hats Off to Will kicks off on Saturday, November 4 at 4 p.m. at the Will Rogers Downs Event Center, three miles east of Claremore on Highway 20. A catered dinner and entertainment will follow at 5 p.m. Featured entertainment includes something to delight young and old. For starters, Will Roberts, a Will Rogers impressionist will dazzle attendees with his quick humor and trick roping skills. Roberts has been a featured act of Cirque du Soleil and is a nationally syndicated radio host of the “Will Rogers Weekly Telegram”. Also on tap for the evening is lively music by nationallyacclaimed and award-winning Cherokee fiddler, Regina Scott. To share her musical talents at age twelve with the crowd as well is the current Miss Junior Red Fern, Katelyn Meyers of Tahlequah. A live auction featuring all kinds of originals as well as a showcase of Cherokee artisans round out the evening. Fun is not in short supply at this event, as everyone is

Participation pays at this gala, as the winner of the “Best Hat Contest” will walk away with a $100 giftcard! Hats Off to Will serves as a crucial fundraiser for IWPC in order to accomplish its goal toward the future. Each year, the IWPC is able to award scholarships to Cherokee students in order that they may attend the college or career tech of their choice. Approximately ten $600 scholarships are awarded, annually, to deserving Cherokee seniors. The scholarship recipients commit to serving their community in exchange. Since beginning the scholarship endowment three years ago, the IWPC has awarded $18,000. “We have seen, first-hand, the difference in students’ lives these monies make,” states Susan Gilliland, IWPC Treasurer. HALLOWEEN FUN FOR ALL G BY DANA PUGH

et into the spooky spirit of Halloween at the Castle of Muskogee! The festival is better than ever this year, with new haunts ranging from tame to terrifying. The Castle of Muskogee is Oklahoma’s 60-acre Halloween theme park, open from 6-10 p.m. every weekend this fall. With free parking and free admission to the Halloween Village, and the attractions ranging in price from just $3-$15, there’s something fun for everyone at the Castle. There are eleven great Halloween attractions to enjoy, all conveniently rated by scariness using the Castle’s Skull Rating as a guide to choosing haunts. From the family-friendly Halloween Village (0 skulls) for the younger ones to Domus Horrificus (5 skulls) for extreme thrill seekers, everyone is invited to get into the Halloween Spirit at the Castle. This popular event continues to grow every year, and the Castle is making changes to improve the experience. “We have implemented a new ticketing system this year,” said Matt Hiller, owner of the Castle of Muskogee. The system, called QLess, uses your phone number and alerts you by text message when your turn is coming up. “This way, you can get out and see everything going on at the

festival instead of standing in line,” he added. This is great news, because there’s more to see at the Castle than ever! If you’re looking for a bone-chilling scare, face the menacing creatures along the Trail of Blood or join in on the action on the Dark Tower Zombie Hunt, where it’s up to you to clear the area of Zombies and rescue survivors. If you’re into Halloween but not the accompanying nightmares, try the Haunted Hayride for some eerie excitement. There’s also plenty to do with absolutely no scares, so the kids can join in on the fun at any age. “Here at the Castle, you can bring the entire family,” says Hiller. “The teenagers can go and do the Trail of Blood, the younger kids can ride the train and then everyone can do the Haunted Hayride or the Maze together.” The Castle’s Halloween Village also features live entertainment on the Chessboard Stage with the comedy of the Jester Rejects and Mark Logsdon, Escapologist. New this year is David Smith, the Hypnotist, and Topsy Turvy Acrobats. If you’re looking for an amazing Halloween adventure, gather family and friends and hop on the Muskogee Turnpike – it’s only a short drive from Tulsa.

his year, more than 2.5 million customers will invite Honey Baked Ham to be an important part of their holiday gatherings from Thanksgiving through the beginning of the New Year. It all started back in the 1940s when founder Harry Hoenselaar patented the perfect final touch to his delicious gourmet hams…the spiral-slicing process. In addition, Harry also created a unique curing and cooking process that produced unbelievably high quality, bone-in smoked hams. In 1957, Harry opened his first Honey Baked Ham Co. store in Detroit, Michigan. The company is still family-owned and each product still employs the same procedures Harry created from the beginning…one at a time. This is just one of the unique features that makes Honey Baked 34 |

In addition to the exquisite taste, turkey breasts are fully cooked and ready to serve, allowing you to spend less time in the kitchen and more time celebrating life with friends and family, one meal at a time. Honey Baked Ham Co. and Cafe of Tulsa is owned and operated by Lee Griffin and the store Manager/Partner is Nikki McAnelly. Lee worked for the parent company 19 years and has owned the Tulsa store for seven. The company’s first employee, Michael Voumard, has 14 years and still serves the organization. Honey Baked Ham of Tulsa is locally owned and operated and the three members of the management team have a combined total of more than 50 years in the Honey Baked business. “Honey Baked’s core values include treating customers like gold, treating everyone with respect, doing the right thing, delivering quality and growth worthy of the brand and making a difference while having some fun!,” says Lee.
