N

Inside the Oklahoma Movie Industry BY CHRIS PUTMAN

VALUE NEWS OWASSO & COLLINSVILLE SEPTEMBER 2020 WWW.VALUENEWS.COM

early every business has been impacted by the pandemic recently, and countless industries have completely halted work and shut down to protect their employees and the public. One industry heavily impacted that an individual might overlook is the film industry. Movie theaters have been closed, finished movies have delayed their release date, and many film projects have been placed on hold, but good news hit on June 1st when Oklahoma entered phase three of reopening. Movie makers jumped on the filming bandwagon and quickly got back to work, but they have done so with health and safety precautions in place. When the Hollywood location is perfect for movie making with streams, rivers, the ocean, beaches, grassy valleys, desert sands, and mountains as nearby backdrops and sunny weather and mild temperatures which are agreeable for filming, why would a movie maker look to Oklahoma as a filming location? The quick answer is economics. So it seems, Oklahoma has a 35-37 percent rebate for qualifying movie production expenditures spent in the state; it is the highest in the nation. This Oklahoma Film Enhancement Rebate Program applies to even low-cost films with a budget of only $50,000 and has spent $25K in the state. The best part is that there is no cap for how much a film can obtain in rebates. This rebate can be used for not only movies but for television shows and commercial production. The Oklahoma Statute Title 68 Section 3621-3626 provides for an $8 million rolling cap per year and has been approved through 2027. A second incentive for filmmakers is the state’s Point of Purchase Sales Tax Exemption, where they can sidestep paying sales tax on property or services used in producing their project. Oklahoma’s sales tax is 4.5 percent, while local taxes average around three or four percent. These

two incentives can’t be used in conjunction with each other— it’s either one or the other— but they are both one heck of a deal. Although Hollywood was chosen as a popular movie making capital for its backdrop locations, Oklahoma doesn’t come across too shabby. Many filmmakers have been drawn to the state for its sand dunes, prairies, streams, rivers, lakes, and lush foliage as well as its city scape and historic buildings. Oddly enough, the Sooner state has cranked out its fair share of movies over the years. Listed are some from the early years of movie making through contemporary films. • “Where the Red Fern Grows,” 1974, filmed in Vian, Tahlequah and Natural Falls State Park’s waterfall. • “Twister,” 1996, shot in Wakita which sports a Twister Museum to view movie memorabilia and learn about the tricks of the film-making industry, see Aunt Meg’s house and the town’s water tower captured in the film. • “The Grapes of Wrath,” 1940, where Beckham County Courthouse in Sayre is shown. • “August: Osage County,” 2013, seen are Tenkiller State Park, Pawhuska and Bartlesville. • “The Outsiders,” 1983, directed by Francis Ford Coppola and shot in Owasso, Skiatook and Tulsa with the Admiral Twin Drive-In as a setting. Fans can also visit The Outsiders House in Tulsa. • Also included in the Oklahoma film list are “Rain Man,” 1988, with an El Reno gas station and Guthrie Big 8 Motel showcased. • “Dillinger,” 1973, with shots of Ardmore, Enid, Nash, and Mannsville, the location of the bridge shootout.

Above: Joshua Miller.

• “The Killer Inside Me,” 2010, filmed in Guthrie, Enid, Tulsa and Oklahoma City. • “Rumble Fish,” 1983, filmed in Tulsa and Sapulpa. • “To the Wonder,” 2012, with the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve in Pawhuska, the Pawnee Bill Ranch Historic Site & Museum in Pawnee and the Bartlesville Community Center as backdrops. • “Elizabethtown,” 2005, showcasing the Cherokee Trading Post & Travel Mart in Calumet and the Survivor Tree at the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum. • “UHF,” 1989, captured entirely in Tulsa. Currently, two films are being produced in Oklahoma. “Stillwater” starring actors Matt Damon and Abigail Breslin is being filmed near Oklahoma City. Legendary Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio will star in “Killers of the Flower Moon,” filmed this spring and summer. So how is the movie industry profitable to the state? Think about it. When a movie comes to town, it brings actors, directors, producers,

extras, camera operators, set builders, makeup artists, etc. and each one has to have a place to stay and food to eat. Not only that, but filmmakers also rent businesses and buildings for each filming day. All that is cash flowing into the state. Zena-born Joshua Miller is an actor, independent filmmaker, set builder, stunt man, prop master, art director, special effects coordinator, and screenwriter who formed Zenawood Entertainment, where he has directed and produced more than ten films. He is a seasoned producer, and life has taught him to keep his feet firmly planted on the ground with each project so that his creative side doesn’t get carried away, making his production efforts unprofitable. “For a time, my motivations were generated from a form of internalized mania, a need to generate abstract art forms put to motion and sound,” Miller said. “Now, when I produce, it is more a quest for completion, a need to make the best work I can as effectively as possible with a profitable outcome. I still have that creative fuel burning in (continued on next page)

(continued from previous page)

me, but I have put a bridle to it.” Miller is also cognizant of the economic impact film-making has on the state. “The rebate program is essential to Oklahoma’s film industry,” Miller said. “Nearly no one is going to come to Oklahoma to shoot a film without that incentive. The film industry here brings in money from outside of the state, money that brings prosperity to communities and citizens who need a cash boost. The film incentive keeps

our creative and talented sons and daughters of this state home. They find satisfying work without having to leave behind the state they love, their families, churches, and communities.” The rebate program has made Miller’s work life a little easier. “Oklahoma’s film incentive has made pitching movies here easier,” Miller said. “Thirty to 37 percent rebate is huge. Frankly, it is incredibly important to the movie biz here. If some of our representatives succeed in eliminating it, people’s movie careers in this state would be eliminated; dreams made dust.” So, in these

uncertain times of job loss and household budget cuts, should someone move forward into the entertainment industry? Oral Roberts University senior Hayden Smalley is a Cinema/TV/Digital Media major who has his own production company, Left: Smalley working on set.

Revolve Studios, LLC. Even at his tender young age, producing films is in his blood. He started projects as a teenager and has won awards for his work. Finishing his last year of college, he’s been working in the field for a while now freelancing doing Foley work on feature films. Currently, he’s also working full time as the media director at Faith Church in Tulsa. Smalley’s goal is not to work for a big production company, but instead, his dream is to stick to being an independent producer. “I know people have made Christian movies - many of which are good, some are amazing - but there’s never been a Christian production company capable of rivaling blockbuster hits like “Avengers Endgame,” James Cameron’s “Avatar,” or “Star Wars,” and I think it’s about time that changed,” Smalley said. “I see a need for a Christian production company to rise-up and rival the predominantly secularized blockbuster market.” Smalley realizes breaking into this industry is a very steep uphill battle, yet he has some lofty goals for here on earth and with a higher vision in mind. “I hope my films, TV projects, etc. touch and move people,” Smalley said. “I want to leave a legacy of film and entertainment that drawsin both a secular audience while remaining pure for the Christian family. I want to make content that pleases the Lord so much that he builds a movie shelf in Heaven just for the films and shows I produce through Revolve Studios.”

Advanced Disinfection Methods Case Study BY TOM FINK

iving in the “new normal” of life after COVID-19, the presence and hopeful protection from viruses and microscopic dangers is more of a priority than ever for everyday citizens, public workers, and business owners everywhere. Business owners like Loretta Kwiatkowski. As the owner of Lord & Ladies Child Development Center in Jenks, Kwiatkowski and her staff oversee the well-being and safety of innumerable children, which includes ensuring that they have a safe environment for play and learning. “When the coronavirus was starting to really pick up in Oklahoma, when it was getting hot and heavy, I happened to see an article about Midwest Pathogend Services in a magazine,” Kwiatkowski said. “I was interested because I have some

These needs are met through a combination of techniques she felt comfortable reaching out to to disinfect spaces, from manually them with an inquiry. wiping surfaces with a high-grade “Early on in the coronavirus, there disinfectant and fogging rooms with a was a lot of fear about what was going proprietary hydrogen peroxide fog. on,” she said. “When I called Midwest, “When I first spoke to Chuck, I the first person I spoke to was explained to him that my needs were (Midwest partner) Chuck Peeples, and for the services to be affordable and he explained to me who they are, and done in a timely manner because we what their usual services are.” were closing our facility for a couple Midwest Pathogend Services is of weeks, ” Kwiatkowski continued. a local, certified provider of the patented PathogendR Service, offering “They were able to work us in, and on affordability. whole-space disinfection services and

CURoxideTM has been in use for more than 7 years to stop the spread of infectious disease in commercial settings across the world, including most recently the National Guard, which was deployed to fight against COVID-19. CURoxideTM shows 99.9999% efficacy in killing the most resistant pathogens.

Kwiatkowski said the Midwest Pathogend staff serviced an area of more than 65,000 square feet in roughly six hours, after which she said she was “extremely satisfied.” “They went over everything they were going to do to clean and decontaminate the facility before doing so. Afterward, they gave me a printout of all the data with the germ count before their servicing, and after,” she said. “They were very professional, and I felt very confident with them.” Kwiatkowski said the Midwest Pathgend crew went above and beyond in not only disinfecting and decontaminating but in preserving the area treated. “We have a lot of live plants, and Chuck’s technicians went around and took pictures of where different things were so that they could be put back in the right spots,” she said. “They helped remove the live plants, and the Guinea pigs, which we have, and helped put them back, so it was much more than them just coming in to ‘just do the job,’ but they were very thorough in their prep work and attention to details.” Kwiatkowski said she was so satisfied with the quality of the work done, she would handily recommend their services to any other home or business owner. “Their professionalism…their skill level …those rate them highly, in my opinion, plus the fact that they’re local

– they’re the only company of this kind that I know of in Oklahoma that does biocontamination. They were very professional, and their work gave us something that’s as important to not just us, but the families we serve as well: peace of mind,” she said. “When people come into your building, you want to be confident that you’ve done everything you can possibly do to make it a safe environment,” she said. “The families and the staff both felt that way after Midwest Pathogend came through. It gave us all great peace of mind.” Operated by Chris Schultheis, M.S., and his partner Chuck Peeples, Midwest Pathogend Services is based in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and so named because their goal is to “end the path to infection.” Midwest services the greater Claremore and Rogers County areas, Tulsa and northeast Oklahoma. “About two years ago, I learned about a newly developed technology that was designed by a microbiologist after her daughter contracted an MRSA infection,” Schultheis said. “This technology, combined with a product we use called CURoxideTM – which is a seven percent Hydrogen Peroxide fogging formula – enabled us to offer our customers the most comprehensive decontamination possible.” After researching the technology, visiting with the founder and her team of specialists, Schultheis decided to purchase equipment to start his own PathogendR Services company in Oklahoma. “In addition to the decontamination service, one thing we do a lot of right now – especially since we’re still relatively new, as far as companies

go, is to educate the public about who we are, what it is we do, and why what we do is so important,” he said. “One misconception people tend to have about us, in the beginning, is that we’re a cleaning company or a janitorial company, but that’s not us – we’re a multi-faceted high-end decontamination service.” Schultheis and Peeples utilize multiple methods that result in the best outcome in disinfecting and decontamination, beginning with the CURIS Decontamination System foggers. “The CURIS foggers are a portable fogging system capable of disinfecting a room or enclosed area via a pulse technology,” Schultheis said. “While (continued on next page) Below: The girls weight room and other facilities at Lincoln Christian School are regularly disinfected to prevent irregular contamination.

other systems rely on dispensing chemicals and turning off once the desired time is achieved, or depend on manual spraying, this system goes a step further by focusing on a ‘maintained pathogen-kill zone.’ The process maintains that volume of solution within a space to improve optimal environmental conditions.” Additionally, the CURIS system employed by Midwest was designed to reduce human error, allowing Schultheis or Peeples to monitor, manage, track, and report the decontamination process. “The system uses .08 ounces (of solution) per cubic feet of space being decontaminated and calculates how much time will be needed to fill every inch of that room with the solution,” Peeples said. “This is important because a common misconception to disinfecting is that you wipe a surface, say, with Lysol, and wipe it off, but some of the harder to kill germs or viruses require you to leave a disinfectant on a surface for up to 20 minutes, and our process fills every cubic inch of a space for the time needed to kill germs, bacteria, etc. “The (CURIS) system will update us on its progress, when the work is done, and if it’s a job that requires more than one unit, should one (unit) stop working, it communicates with the other units, which then ‘pick up the slack’ and increase their solution output to compensate,” he said. “We’re alerted to all of this through electronic notifications, so we’re able to closely monitor the entire process.” Midwest’s highly-effective CURoxideTM solution may be sprayed directly onto surfaces or used in a fog to saturate an area. The fog itself is non-corrosive, odorless, leaves no residue, and can safely provide full-room decontamination for offices, schools, gymnasiums, nursing homes, hotels, homes, or other spaces. As varied as pathogens are, Schultheis said that the decontamination services he provides 16 |

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), all chimneys should be cleaned at least once every year. Keeping your chimney clean helps prevent home fires—it’s as simple as that. When you burn a fire in your fireplace, two things happen: Chimney soot builds up, as well as creosote, which is a heavy, thick, oily residue similar to tar that’s a byproduct of burning wood. While soot is more easily removable, creosote sticks to the chimney lining, which can be dangerous because it’s extremely flammable.

A Pocket Full of Curry Leaves BY SHANNON SMITH

M

y travels to India gave me a huge appreciation for the vast and vibrant landscapes, traditions, and, of course, food. The mountains in the north with temperate climate have a wealth of tea, turmeric, and rice. In the capital of New Delhi, there are spicy tandoori dishes with rich smoky sauces. Rajasthan is home to many vegetarians, and the food has a unique richness due to the amount of butter, lentils, and chiles used in their cooking. I particularly love the south of India, where the economy thrives on spices and coconut. In addition to cooking with the flesh and milk from the coconut, coconut oil has many uses. The outer shells are made into bowls, and coconut leaves are made into brooms and roofs for rural huts. Chili peppers grow in abundance in the south and are essential for cooking the fish caught fresh from the sea. My first visit to India was to Goa, on the southwest coast. I spent days at the beach, walking by huts and food stalls with clay tandoor ovens buried in the sand. I’ll never forget the first time I saw fresh naan bread cooking on the interior walls of the tandoor, while whole fish, bathed in spices cooked on a spear over

the hot coals. Further south, I visited Cochin, where fishermen cast their huge nets from boats nested in the sand on the beach. Every morning I watched as the nets full of fish were pulled up by multiple ropes suspended from huge wooden beams. It was in Cochin that I had my first dosa, the paper-thin rice pancake filled with potatoes, spices, and chutney. They’re most common for breakfast, served with tea and fried bananas. At a guesthouse in Cochin, I was allowed to assist the cook each morning as he prepared the curries for lunch. Just outside the kitchen door was a coconut palm tree and a curry leaf tree. He would pick coconuts each morning, and crack them open with a machete. After pouring the clear coconut milk into a pitcher, we shaved the flesh inside the shells to be used for salads and chutney. I was most intrigued by the curry leaf tree. The pungent aroma was so unique, and I often carried a sprig of leaves in my pocket to smell throughout the day. The cook would fry them in coconut oil with cashews to serve as a snack during cocktail hour. He also put the whole leaves into stews, and ground

Garlic Shrimp with Curry Leaves Serves 4 - When I was in Southern India we cooked everything with fresh curry leaves. They give the most unique and fresh flavor to all kinds of dishes. This shrimp recipe takes just minutes to prepare, and it will be one of your favorites. I buy fresh curry leaves at my local Indian grocery store or international grocery store. If you can’t find them fresh, you can use the frozen ones. • • • • • 22 |

them into a paste with garlic and ginger to go into a fish curry. When I got home, I was delighted to find fresh curry leaves at my local international supermarket. The owner knows how much I love them, and when I shop, he brings me his freshest leaves from the back stockroom. Recently, I met an Indian doctor in Oklahoma, and I told him about my fascination with curry leaves. He told me he had a curry tree at home, and I couldn’t believe it. One morning I found a pot on my front porch with a small curry tree. He had dug it up from his garden and left it as a gift. If I had to choose one of my favorite Indian dishes using fresh curry leaves, it would be my Garlic Shrimp. It takes minutes to prepare, and it brings back many memories of southern India that I loved so much. Take the time to seek out curry leaves, and use them in a variety of ways. Several of my Indian recipes require them. You can get my recipes at chefshannon.com.

serrano), minced 1 teaspoon black mustard seeds 2 cloves garlic, minced 15 fresh curry leaves 1/2 cup cherry tomatoes, chopped

Wash shrimp and pat dry with paper towels. Place in a bowl and toss with salt and pepper. Heat a wok or large skillet over medium high heat and add canola oil. Add green chiles and mustard seeds. As soon as mustard seeds start to pop add shrimp. Toss in oil and cook for 2 minutes, then add garlic, curry leaves, and tomatoes. Cook until shrimp is done, about 3 more minutes. Shrimp will turn opaque and pink. Do not overcook. Remove from heat and pour contents on a platter and serve.

Home of Hope’s 35th Annual Golf Classic, ‘19th Hole’ Silent Auction Scheduled BY TOM FINK

F

or decades, the people of Claremore have rallied around Home of Hope and its subsidiary, the Rogers County Training Center, every year at an annual fundraising golf tournament. Even in a year as unusual and unprecedented as 2020, like any good golfer, Home of Hope has found a means by which to play past its many hazards and bring back the annual Rogers County Training Center Golf Classic & 19th Hole Silent Auction. “Like everyone else, we’ve had to spend much of 2020 living through a pandemic,” said Home of Hope CEO Ralph Richardson, Ph.D. “You know, the world changes all the time, but this – the pandemic – has been something in which the entire world has changed, and in a way, that’s kind of a summary of what the people in our programs have gone through.” For those unfamiliar, Rogers County Training Center – a subsidiary of Home of

Hope – provides vocational opportunities for persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities while providing local businesses with labor. But few could have foreseen the prolonged disruption of everyday routines incurred by the pandemic. “We have programs that are designed around empowering people with disabilities, and that means giving them opportunities to go out into the community, giving them opportunities to work, and to experience employment and to earn a paycheck of their own,” he said. “For many people living with intellectual disabilities, these are things that they grew up believing they would never have. What this means is we create opportunities for social engagement, for involvement in activities, and also for involvement in Special Olympics, which is on a level beyond anyone else’s participation in Oklahoma. “All of that stopped – all of it,” he said. Richardson said that, as the

rest of the world learned about the extent of the pandemic, Home of Hope’s vocational programs for those with intellectual disabilities had to be shut down for a period of time, but even during this, Home of Hope, like many, worked to make the most of the situation on behalf of its clients. “Our direct care staff have been phenomenal, in trying to take days during which people had lost their entire routine and sense of accomplishment, their entire sense of connection, and try to make – not just something okay – but something exceptional, which went on for months,” he said. “We worked very hard as an organization to create activity opportunities, ideas for interaction, contests that people

“This is always a great day for everyone involved,” Richardson said, “and with everything that’s been different about this year, I’m glad we’re still going to be able to host this event – it truly does impact people’s lives.” 40 |

in different houses could compete in – our house staff truly rose to the occasion to make sure our clients got up, got around, found purpose in the day, and stayed involved until such time that we were able to slowly get back to more consistent routine operations.” Limited face to face visits and reopening the training center in Claremore, albeit at a reduced capacity and with an increased focus on pandemic-related safety protocols, has, for many Home of Hope clients, helped them regain a sense of normalcy. “We’ve done a lot, but we still have a long way to go – we serve people in 61 different homes, in six different communities, so making sure the abilities to connect with our clients are robust is something we’re still working diligently on,” he said. “We believe the investments we’re making now in terms of technology to enhance our ability for our clients to connect with family and with medical

professionals…we don’t feel that this is something we’re doing just until we get back to ‘normal,’ we feel like these are long-term investments. In some ways, this is going to be the new ‘normal,’ especially with regards to telehealth and telemedicine.” Even with the short- and longterm modifications, Home of Hope still felt it important to host its benefit golf tournament. “The golf classic will be done largely as it has been done in the past – it is an outdoor event, and we will be practicing some new (safety) modifications in terms of how we handle registration and how we provide lunch,” he said. “We’re fortunate in that this, being an outdoor event, is much more ‘doable’ than an inside event, many of which have had to be done differently or canceled this year.” The differences between this year’s event and previous years will be minor, Richardson said, but should still allow for all the same enjoyment had in years past. The tournament itself is a four-man scramble format with designated tee times and flights. Although there is no limit to the number of golfers or teams allowed, tee times can fill up early, so early sign-up is strongly encouraged. “This is always a great day for everyone involved,” Richardson said, “and with everything that’s been Left: Rogers County Training Center client Jason working diligently at the Claremore site. different about this year, I’m glad we’re still going to be able to host this event – it truly does impact people’s lives.” The 35th Annual Rogers County Training Center Golf Classic & 19th Hole Silent Auction is scheduled for Friday, September 19, at Heritage Hills Golf Course in Claremore. he Rooster Days festival committee is moving forward with the Rooster Days Run, Miss Rooster Days Pageant, and Rooster Days Cornhole Tournament this September. The schedule is as follows: • Rooster Days Fun Run: 7 p.m., September 12, 2020, BA Events Complex (21101 E. 101st St.) • Rooster Days 5K Run: 7:30 p.m., September 12, 2020, BA Events Complex (21101 E. 101st St.) • Rooster Days Pageant: 7 p.m., September 17, 2020, Central on Main Ballroom (210 N. surrounding communities would be in a different place. However, in June, the Board of Directors made the difficult decision to cancel the festival due to the rising number of COVID-19 cases in previous weeks. In an effort to preserve some portion of the festival and not have it completely canceled for the year, the committee felt they could proceed with the run, pageant, and cornhole tournament in a safe, socially distanced manner. They also felt it was important to uphold the commitment of giving away a $4,000 scholarship to a deserving student for the Miss Rooster Days Pageant. “Canceling Oklahoma’s longest consecutively running festival was an incredibly difficult decision. We know how important this event is to the community. I was happy to see the committee willing to dig deep and find a way to preserve a few of our cherished traditions,” said Amber Hinkle, Events Manager for the Broken Arrow Chamber of Commerce. Today’s Science: Solutions for Back Pain What is Kyphoplasty? Does it Relieve Chronic Back Pain? Why are Vertebral Compression Fractures (VCF) important?

A vertebral compression fracture is often the first sign of osteoporosis, but they are usually missed by imaging. For example, 86% of VCFs are missed on advanced CT. VCFs are also associated with high rates of death if left untreated. A recent analysis of the entire Medicare data set showed that for patients with a VCF, only 15% will survive 10 years. However, the same analysis showed that kyphoplasty more than doubles the survival rate of these patients.

What is Kyphoplasty?

• • • •

Kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive procedure that quickly repairs vertebral compression fractures (VCF) and restores structural integrity to broken vertebral bone. Kyphoplasty is an outpatient procedure that uses a cavity creation device (usually a balloon) to create a space in the broken vertebra which is then filled with a special bone cement to stabilize the fracture and reduce pain.

How does Kyphoplasty help?

The goal of kyphoplasty is to restore the broken vertebra to a more normal height and to fix the pain caused by the fracture. When a vertebral fracture occurs, it most commonly presents as an acute worsening of chronic lower back pain. Many times the patient’s chronic back pain is getting worse, but it’s actually due to a recent fracture. Many of our patients experience immediate pain relief following kyphoplasty. It can help relieve pain by stabilizing the fracture. Improved mobility results because of decreased pain levels.

What happens during the Kyphoplasty procedure?

• Needle Placement - Under IV sedation and using x-ray guidance, a

pencil-sized needle is placed through a small (quarter-inch) incision and a working channel is made in the fractured vertebral body. Cavity Created – A balloon is generally used to create a space and to reduce the fracture to more anatomic alignment. Devices Removed – The balloon is deflated, leaving a cavity in the vertebral body. Fracture Stabilized – The cavity is filled with bone cement to stabilize the fracture. Once filled, the incision is closed. End of Procedure – With the process completed, an internal cast is now in place. This stabilizes the vertebral body and provides rapid mobility and pain relief. The procedure takes about 30 minutes and has a short recovery time, usually a couple of days for most patients.

After Kyphoplasty

Patients treated with balloon kyphoplasty have significantly better outcomes in terms of pain reduction, quality of life, function and mobility both initially at one month, and throughout the months and years after treatment. 94% have complete or significant pain reduction and 67% have improved mobility. While kyphoplasty is highly effective for improving mobility and decreasing pain in patients with spinal fractures, it does not treat the underlying osteoporosis itself. It’s important for your doctor to treat the underlying bone disease (osteoporosis) causing the fractures. This decreases the risk of future fractures and generally makes spinal fractures less frequent.

Kyphoplasty vs. Vertebroplasty

Kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty are both medical procedures designed to treat pain associated with vertebral compression fractures. The main difference is vertebroplasty does not create a cavity and there is higher likelihood of cement leakage. Kyphoplasty has a significantly lower complication rate compared to verteboplasty and more than doubles the 10-year survival rate in patients over 65.

Dr. Webb – Kyphoplasty Expert When it comes to kyphoplasty, Dr. Webb is one of the most experienced physicians in the US. Dr. Webb has performed thousands of kyphoplasty procedures and has the experience necessary to safely perform kyphoplasty. In fact, he also teaches other physicians how to safely and effectively perform the procedure. Here are a few facts about Dr. Webb’s kyphoplasty expertise: • He performed over 120 kyphoplasties during his training (fellowship). • Was one of the first physicians to perform kyphoplasty in Oklahoma. • Was a principal investigator in the EVOLVE trial,

6550 E 71st St #200 Tulsa, OK 74133

the largest ever on-label study of kyphoplasty in Medicare patients with vertebral fractures with 350 patients enrolled over 24 sites across the US. • The first in Oklahoma and one of a few in the nation to establish a full-service outpatient clinic focused on medically treating the underlying causes of osteoporosis in patients with VCF.. • The highest level of experience in the Tulsa area with 300-400 fractures treated per year. • Continues efforts to refine vertebral fracture treatment, consulting for numerous medical device companies and teaching other physicians how to perform this life-saving procedure.
