Hope Harbor’s Partners Provide Healing for Families Impacted by Trauma BY STEPHANIE STEWARD

of Hope Harbor’s Annual Open House and Fish Fry. This event is to show our partners how much we love and appreciate them and all they do to heal children and families impacted by trauma. This year on Sept. 25 beginning at 10:30 a.m. we want to invite all of you to join us on our campus located at 15025 East 380 Road in Claremore. It will be a day filled with great fish and BBQ, children’s activities, a silent basket auction, a live dessert auction and so much more. If you do not know anything about Hope Harbor, Sept. 25 would be a great time to get to know us. The event is free and open to the public. Children of all ages are welcome. Our Executive Director, Dirk O’Donnell and members of our staff will present information about how the program is designed as well as why the program works. You will hear from graduates as well as their families about how their experience here changed their futures. We will also have some of our largest supporters telling their reason for their involvement with our program.

When you partner with Hope Harbor, you provide the tools and support needed to heal children and families impacted by trauma. Over 80 percent of former Hope Harbor residents surveyed report maintaining positive change in their life after graduating the program. You help break the cycle of trauma and help these children and their families move forward to a healthier life.
Hope Harbor has been part of Rogers County since the late 1900s, however, we want to be a larger part of this community. We know this starts by getting to know you, our neighbors. We want you to know our doors are open and we are striving to grow our relationships with each and every one of you. Come join us on Sept. 25 for food and fun. It will give us a chance to shake your hand and introduce ourselves. Together we can make Rogers County a place where families know they are loved and where trauma does not get

Gleam Guard is an Easy, Affordable Kitchen Upgrade Refinish and renew your cabinets and woodwork with little downtime and at much lower cost than replacement.
S
eptember, 2021: Fall is on its way and with the cooler weather coming in; you can finally get to your home renovation list before the holidays, starting with your cabinets. While cabinets’ purpose is functional, they remain a focal point of the home. Whether your cabinets are peeling, greasy or even
in bad condition, Gleam Guard Wood Refinishing can remedy your woodwork and make it look like new again using eco-friendly and odorless materials with a 5-year guarantee to top it off! They are an A+ Rated BBB Accredited company and offer reasonably priced and highly effective solutions
for restoring and refinishing your cabinetry and woodwork. “We can refinish cabinets that are in really bad shape. We can also clean your cabinets and give them a new, permanent finish,” says owner Tracy Booth. “The Gleam Guard finishes are available in matte, shiny and satin. When we apply our Gleam Guard system, it bonds to the original finish and makes the surface smooth and dry. The process remarkably enhances wood grain and keeps it looking oiled and polished. Old imperfections cannot be seen. This is an ultra low odor process; it is completely safe for even those with serious breathing problems to be in the house.” The entire messfree Gleam Guard process takes only one to two days to complete, so your kitchen can be transformed in time for the holidays. Whole house projects, which include kitchen and bath cabinets, baseboards, doors, moldings, paneling and just about any other vertical wood surface, can be done in three to five days. Tracy’s son, Phillip Booth, manages their Tulsa Metro office along with Jonathan. Phillip and his professional craftsmen are continuing the legacy that Tracy started over 30 years ago. They have perfected their skill, timing and attention to detail. Left: Phillip and Jonathan enjoy making cabinetry look-like new again.

Their process begins by preparing the surfaces with a thorough cleaning to remove dirt and debris and making any reparation of damaged areas. Damaged areas are treated with custom-matched stain blends. Lastly, the cabinets are protected with a coating that will keep cabinetry and woodwork looking fresh for decades. A special over-glazing is used when you want to change the color of the wood. Dust-free and non-toxic, the process works on traditional wood surfaces, along with those which are painted, glazed and pickled. A real big plus is that you don’t have to empty cabinets or remove hardware prior to the process. Each job comes with a free 5-year touch up warranty. “We have customers we served over 20 years ago who say their cabinets still

look great even today. It is because of our hometown people in the greater Tulsa area that we were able to expand and help families across the country beautify their homes, including Kansas City, Branson, Northwest Washington and Canada,” he says. The Gleam Guard crew will be in and out, without interruptions or breakaways. Their work area, when finished, will look like no one was there. Aftercare is as simple as wiping with a damp cloth. Tracy says when people see the difference Gleam Guard has made in friend’s or relative’s homes, they are quite often sold on the process! Even those considering new cabinets or refacing old cabinets frequently decide on Gleam Guard Wood Refinishing instead. It’s the sensible solution that makes a big difference. Gleam Guard often costs clients 70 percent less when compared to other options. “I love to show people how they can save money and still have beautiful wood finishes that look like new,” says Tracy. To complete the makeover, the team can also deep clean rock and stone interior surfaces. How to Turn Your Passion into a Profession S Look for the most advanced programs at Intune, Best New School of Massage
eptember, 2021: If you’re considering a new career, massage therapy is a solid choice. There are many reasons why a career in massage therapy is appealing. Maybe you are seeking a new professional challenge that will give you financial security in an exciting area. Perhaps helping people is one of your career goals. Maybe you yearn to get out from behind a desk or pursue work that has more personal meaning to you. But if you’re still asking, “Is massage therapy a good career for me?” then let’s explore what makes massage therapy an appealing career for so many people. Personal Qualities You’re friendly, a good listener who gets along easily with others and who enjoys social contact. You like to build relationships and value input from
others when you make decisions. You’re cooperative, and others appreciate your loyalty and support. People may come to you for advice. You don’t mind providing thoughtful feedback or positive comments about others. You make people comfortable. You are a people person who enjoys helping others. If so, a career as a licensed massage therapist may be an excellent career choice for you. You probably already possess some of the qualities that make a successful massage therapist if you’re looking at the field as a potential new career. But what specifically are the qualities that make a practitioner successful? Let’s look at them in more detail. Do you want to go to work every day and help people? Having that drive is probably the first requirement for becoming a massage therapist. Even more alluring, and unlike many other health related professions, you can often obtain a degree in less than a year. Imagine yourself in a new profession this time next year! If you like flexibility and being in control of your own schedule, massage has a lot to offer. Sixty-seven percent of practicing therapists are sole practitioners, according to the American Massage Therapy Association. That means massage therapy is a great career for people with an entrepreneurial spirit and enjoy control of their own destiny. Left: Leslie Cohen, Intune School of Massage owner and instructor. Right: Start school and work at your own pace. Intune School of Massage classes begin every week.

If the responsibility of owning your own businesses doesn’t appeal to you, many other employment options exist. There are lots of different massage therapy positions to explore! Some places you can work as a massage therapist include: hospitals and medical centers, spas and resorts, sports and fitness franchises, and many more. The demand for massage is growing. A massage therapy salary can vary, depending on where you live, how much you can work, what environment you work in and more. In 2020, the median wage was $43,620. Education Leslie Cohen, Intune School of Massage owner and instructor, is a retired school teacher with a passion for massage and owner of Tranquility Spa in Claremore, Oklahoma. Her idea for the school began to take shape when she realized there was a tremendous need for more massage therapists and massage training in the Rogers County area. With great detail she moved forward and completed the process of Oklahoma State certification and licensing requirements and Intune School of Massage was officially born. The Intune School of Massage is 550 hour private preparatory vocational

school that prepares you to take the MBLEX exam for a massage therapist license. Leslie described that their curriculum is text book and experience-based, so you won’t be struggling to learn about procedures solely from a book. “You’ll dive right in, observing and able to ask questions as they come up. The handson atmosphere gives you an edge when it comes to recalling the material, so you’ll be learning faster and retaining more than you might be while attending programs that are rooted in traditional lectures and book study. Intune School of Massage’s smaller class sizes of 4-6 students per course allow students to have the personal attention they deserve and the opportunity to practice. The ongoing experience of working with actual human beings contributes to the overall confidence of graduates. Another benefit to this strategy is that students fully understand the patient’s experience. “This allows students to identify with any measure of discomfort a patient might feel, develop empathy and connection with clients, and better discern whether a patient’s experience is typical or should be cause for concern. The “builtin” experience is a big plus because it can be required for many positions and difficult to obtain. Our students complete a 40-hour internship.”
Above: Leslie Cohen and Reva Schumacher offer students personal attention and everything they need to be ready for work as a licensed professional massage therapist.
Additionally, Leslie said they offer professional guidance, teaching you the ins and outs of applying for positions, entrepreneurial opportunities, and provide you with essential equipment in this field so you will be set up for success from the start. “Our classes begin weekly and students can work at their own pace, focus on being prepared for the state exam, and typically ready for work upon finishing the program. We offer students an opportunity for a new career in a professional field, with many career path options. Intune School of
Massage trains students, both men and women, to be the best massage therapist they can be and to care about every client,” Leslie concluded. What is your next step? Call Leslie to schedule a one-on-one career planning meeting. She will give you detailed program information and help you plan for your new career in massage therapy.

A Return to Wine and Roses BY STEPHANI FREEMAN
S
eptember, 2021: A Return to Wine and Roses, the Tulsa Garden Center’s long-standing garden party gala event, has been scheduled for Friday evening, Sept. 24 at the ever-gorgeous Linnaeus Teaching Garden in Woodward Park. All proceeds from this fundraising event benefit educational programs and beautification for Tulsa’s favorite midtown oasis. “We really missed hosting this event in 2020,” said Laura Chalus,
26 |
Tulsa Garden Center CEO, “so we’re extremely thankful this year to be able to offer our guests a safe, upscale event hosted entirely outdoors.” Mr. and Mrs. Andy Zanovich excitedly agreed to serve as event chairs this year, which is especially poignant since this will be Andy’s
final year as board president. Andy and Cassie live in an adjacent neighborhood to Woodward Park and enjoy spending family time there with their children. Andy’s commitment to Woodward Park began years ago as a Leadership Tulsa board intern, progressing to a

board member, then vice president, and finally president for the past three years. “Leading an organization through these unprecedented times has been quite a challenge, but knowing that Woodward Park’s attendance has increased dramatically since the pandemic began has made it all worthwhile.” The Tulsa Garden Center is a nonprofit organization incorporated in 1950, with a mission to serve as horticultural headquarters with diverse educational opportunities for our community, and to provide exceptional and unique guest
experiences. With a business-led board of directors, the organization’s long-range vision is for the Hellen Woodward Park & Gardens to be a premier public garden which connects all people to nature. “As I’ve been reaching out to restaurants, they are excited that we are back with our premier event again this year,” said Stephani Freeman, Tulsa Garden Center Donor Services Administrator. Besides the exceptional wine and spirits which guests will enjoy, some of Tulsa’s foremost restaurants participating
include The Chalkboard, Justin Thompson Restaurant Group, Euro-Mart, The Vault, Roka Bar, Bravo’s Mexican Grill, KEO and Redrock Canyon Grill. New to Wine and Roses this year is Ms. Andrea Gardner, general manager of Tulsa Hills Wine Cellar. “It is an honor to be the Wine Chair of this year’s A Return to Wine & Roses. This is a historic event which supports beautiful gardens and park space that everyone can enjoy. The success and longevity of this event really speaks to the generosity and community involvement of Tulsans. It is also a wonderful way for us to support local restaurants, wineries, breweries and distilleries by showing off what they have to offer.” Make plans now to purchase your ticket, as there are only a limited number of tickets available. Garden Center Member tickets are $150 and non-member tickets are $175. You may purchase online on our website tulsagardencenter.org/wine-androses or call 918-576-5160 and talk to Stephani.

That includes your initial consultation with the doctor, the procedure itself and support (if needed) during the healing process. When you schedule your procedure, there is a $100.00 non-refundable scheduling fee to book the appointment, which is applied to the cost of the surgery on the day of the procedure. The remaining $400 is due the day you have the vasectomy done. Please note that the deposit is non-refundable under any circumstances.
