ASK THE MONEY MAVEN STRAIGHT-FORWARD, NO-NONSENSE TALK ABOUT YOUR MONEY

Layoffs: Coping with Fear, Anger and Money BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT

As oil and gas prices drop, many Oklahomans fear for their jobs. The anticipation of what’s to come makes fear and anxiety soar. All of us have a need for certainty in our lives. When we are faced with uncertainty in our jobs, it threatens our financial security and our family. It often leaves folks feeling powerless, scared and angry. It’s normal to have those feelings but important to remember that you don’t have to let your circumstances control and define you. While you may not have control of the circumstances, you have control over your own mind. Certainty comes from inside you, not from what has happened to you. Your thoughts, your feelings and your response are all up to you. You can begin to take control by developing a plan for your finances and creating a positive outlook for your future.

Revisit your Budget. Look at what is really a necessity and what you can cut back on. It may require a temporary change in lifestyle and expectations. For example, shelter, food and transportation are necessities. Fine dining, $5,000 mortgages and Porsche payments are not. Be practical and realistic. Apply for Unemployment and Prepare Your Résumé. Begin right away by utilizing your personal and professional networks for new opportunities. Get that résumé up to speed and start sending it out as soon as possible.

Cook It, Taste It

Claremore Reveille Rotarians partner with Cherokee Casino Will Rogers Downs for return of Boots and BBQ Festival May 9.

By Clarice Doyle On Saturday, May 9, the general public is invited to sample some of the region’s best barbecue during the KCBS-sanctioned 2015 Boots and BBQ Festival, a Claremore Reveille Rotary Club event, taking place at the Cherokee Casino Will Rogers Downs. “Of course, this is first and foremost a barbecue contest, literally pitting some of the top regional cookers as well as amateurs against one another, for a chance to win cash prizes and move on to Kansas City Barbecue Society cook-off events later this year,” said Clarice Doyle, Rotarian and event chair. The public portion of the festival begins 10 a.m. Saturday when festival vendors and the Cherokee Casino open for business. At 11 a.m. Taster Kits will

go on sale for $6, allowing festivalgoers to sample the barbecue from participating cookers. Kits will be sold as long as food is available. The public is asked to vote for their favorite barbecue and team during this portion of the event. Official KCBS judging will take place separately. “This is by far the most popular segment of the festival when it comes to the general public. A person can just about get all you can eat by the time you get around to each of the cookers,” said John Walke, Rotarian and the festival’s cooking team manager. “Winning ‘People’s Choice’ is a highly desired title among our cooking teams.” Barbecue cooks who still want to sign up to compete for top cash prizes can do so by visiting

Reveille Rotarians believe teamwork makes the annual Boots and BBQ Festival a success every year. Preparing for this year’s event are morning club members (L to R) Clarice Doyle, Sam Nichols, Roger Evans, Steve Gragert, Tanya Andrews, Barry Knight, Ron Burrows, Dr. Richard Mosier and Roger Fleming. www.claremorereveille.com or emailing walkewbmp@aol.com or RSUcjc76@gmail.com for team entry form. Competitor check-in will be Friday, May 8 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Cherokee Casino Will Rogers Downs is located three miles east of Claremore on Highway 20. Free public parking and KOA camping facilities are available on-site. Reveille Rotary’s Boots and BBQ Festival is a Kansas City Barbecue Society (KCBS) sanctioned event. Cooking teams will be competing in Beef Brisket, Pork Ribs, Pork Butt, Chicken, Dessert and People’s Choice. Trained KCBS judges will decide who will win a portion of the $10,000 in cash prizes and a chance to move on to top regional cook-off events

later this year. Other food and drink vendors will be on hand to complement the barbecue. The Boots and BBQ Festival is an annual event hosted by members of the Reveille Rotary Club of Claremore. Money raised from the event is used by the club to further the success of their long list of service projects including Dictionary’s for Kids, Food4Kids, international Rotary projects such as water wells, End Polio Now, youth leadership programs, scholarships and more. Cherokee Casino Will Rogers Downs is presenting sponsor, providing funds for the winner’s payout as well as location facilities and services. Live horse racing begins 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. The

awards ceremony will be 4:15, followed by music by Paul Bogart on the casino’s Dog Iron Stage at 8 p.m. The festival committee management team includes Rotarians Doyle, event chair; Walke, cooking teams; Steve Gragert, vendors; and Roger Fleming, judges.

Test Your Detective Skills Murder mystery dinner theatre returns to the Belvidere Mansion to raise funds for the Rogers County Historical Society. By Carol Beck-Round Mixing fact with fiction, “The Apartment House,” a play written by Mark Ogle, will be performed at Claremore’s historical Belvidere Mansion during two upcoming April weekends. The murder mystery begins with a prime rib dinner downstairs at 6 p.m., followed by the play at 7 p.m. in the ballroom. Dates are Friday, April 10 and Saturday, April 11, as well as Friday, April 17 and Saturday, April 18. The play is set in 1946. Financial woes have forced the mansion’s owners to turn it into an apartment house. What secrets does this old mansion hold? Is it haunted? Who is living there? What stories do they have to tell or hide? For one resident, it proves deadly! “The real Belvidere Mansion was converted into an apartment house in July of 1946,” says Ogle. “Two of the characters in the play are based on real people, my uncle and aunt, Sam and Louise Webb, who as newlyweds were the first apartment residents in the mansion.” Each person attending will be able to test their detective skills as they try to solve the murder, determine the motive and vie for the coveted Super Sleuth Award.

A mystery needs to be solved. Can you help find the murderer? Committee members discuss the upcoming fundraiser for the Rogers County Historical Society—a murder mystery written by Mark Ogle—which will be held at the Belvidere Mansion during April. (L to R): (Seated) Patrick Deaver, vice-president of the RCHS; Hoytanna Benigar, RCHS president; Mark Ogle; and (standing) Kathy Wilken, Belvidere Tea Room manager. Directed by Dan Huey, the play boasts a cast of 17, many of whom have performed in previous plays by Ogle, who is known throughout the community for his murder mysteries. “We’ve done murder mysteries in the past and decided to revive this tradition,” says Kathy Wilken, Belvidere Tea Room manager. “Because of space limitations

downstairs, we’re limited to 60 people each night.” All proceeds from this fundraiser will go into the restoration and preservation of the Belvidere as well as other Rogers County Historical Society projects. The RCHS also supports the Totem Pole Park. Tickets for the evening are $50 each. Reservations are required. Call Patrick Deaver at

(918) 688-0651 or email him at patrick.deaver@att.net. “We are in a transition phase,” says Deaver. “From now on, all ticket reservations for special events must be made through me.” Deaver is the vice-president of the Rogers County Historical Society. Don’t wait until the murder mystery, however, to check out this historical mansion. The tea room

is open Tuesday through Saturday for lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. You’ll find salads, sandwiches, soups and seasonal specials, as well as desserts and specialty teas on the menu. You can also take a tour or shop in the gift shop from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m., where you’ll find competitively-priced merchandise from over 50 different vendors, as well as unique handpicked vintage and antique items. While lunch reservations aren’t required, if your group is larger than six, Wilken recommends calling ahead. “We host church groups, organizations and business meetings and have a private room available for these groups.” The Belvidere also provides rentals for private parties, including weddings, receptions, bridal and baby showers, family reunions and special event destinations. According to Wilken, over 2,000 people visit the Belvidere each year. To make a reservation, call the Belvidere at (918) 342-1127. The mansion is located at 121 N. Chickasaw Ave. To find out more about the Belvidere Mansion and upcoming events, check out their website at www.rchs1.org.

We also use a number of free and subscription programs that specialize in genealogy.” Twenty years ago, it was necessary to write or call libraries, historical societies and genealogy societies to find local information. “Today, we jump on the Internet super highway, our computer, and Google our way back to find the towns, counties, vital records, books, and history about where our ancestors lived and what was going on in that area when they were living there,” said Louise Horner. “In 2006, after attending the National Genealogy Confer-

Several television shows on ancestry research have increased the interest of the entire population, and before that, the television movie “Roots” sparked the popularity of genealogy research. This year, the conference will be held in St. Charles, Missouri, west of St. Louis and the starting point for Lewis and Clark’s expedition west. “It is a drivable distance from Claremore and some of us are planning to attend,” added Farrel Prater. Reputation Through the Roof After 47 Years in Business

If you’re in the market for a new metal roof, Lucas Metal Works is highly regarded name in the industry. Metal offers a number of advantages over other roofing materials. By Sheryl Sowell Lucas Metal Work’s Metal Roofing and Metal Buildings products are used every single day in all industries. Over the past 47 years, the company has developed a stellar reputation across Oklahoma and the Midwest, offering the highest quality products and impeccable customer service. What many people may not know, however, is that residential customers can bring this same excellence to their own homes with Lucas metal roofing and metal buildings. Metal roofs have a number of advantages over other types of roofing materials. They not only look sleek and polished, thus increasing a home’s curb appeal, they are also highly energy-efficient and long-lasting. “Our metal roofs are guaranteed to last a long time, much longer than standard roofing materials – we offer a 40-year warranty,” says Tammy Laakso, marketing and sales manager for Lucas Metal Works. “The large selection of options is another advantage. Our 26 gauge metal panels are available in 16 different colors.”

Metal roofs are highly durable, which is critical in the ever-changing weather landscape of Oklahoma, where within a few weeks it’s possible to see snow, ice, sleet, sun, rain, high winds and tornadoes. Lucas Metal Works also serves residential customers with the addition of metal buildings to their properties. “Metal buildings are great for storage space or work space. We have many customers who purchase metal buildings for hobbies and storing cars, airplanes, boats and RVs. Metal buildings are also used as greenhouses,” says Tammy. “The vinyl insulation used on the inside of the metal buildings keeps the noise factor down while being energy efficient. These affordable buildings are a useful and sound investment to add to your property.” Tammy says that in addition to their top-tier products and talented team of professionals, what sets Lucas Metal Works apart is the strong relationship they maintain with their customers. “Lucas has been a trusted, re-

spected name in the industry for almost five decades. We work closely with our customers from start to finish and beyond.” In 1968, Raymond Lucas started up a small custom metal works shop, and it was not long before his ideas outgrew his humble Jerry, Lucas Metal Works employee, hard at work. space. Life Stressors Can Trigger Depression By Dr. Jeff McIlroy Joe’s story: I work a stressful job and balance that with family life and all activities associated with having active kids. My depression was severe – it affected my work, home and social life. My first episode of depression started in January of 2008 and was ongoing for almost a year before I started TMS Therapy. I decided on TMS Therapy because medications had too many side effects and didn’t seem to work. TMS Therapy treatment seemed promising. Once you commit to it, you see the difference fairly quickly. Once I started seeing the results, I was encouraged and felt good about the treatment. Ten treatments into the program, I felt happier, started thinking more positively – I feel like I have returned to the way I felt before I became depressed.

Christine’s story: I am a stay at home mom and wife of a firefighter. I home-school my youngest girl (12 years old). My oldest is 14 years old. My husband and I have been happily married for 16 years. My first episode of depression started directly after the birth of my second daughter. I had 2-3 episodes of depression before the birth of my second daughter, but they all resolved without meds. The depression after my second’s birth was far worse. I was at a standstill – crying all the time, erratic mood swings, couldn’t sleep, mind raced and had terrible thoughts.

NEW!

After learning my insurance would cover TMS Therapy, I decided to receive treatment. I had tried so many meds, I was ready to be off of them for good. I was very skeptical in the beginning and the process hurt a little in the beginning. After I think the 5th or 6th treatment I started to notice it working. I was weaned off of my medication as I started to feel better and treatments didn’t hurt as they did in the beginning. My life has changed since receiving TMS Therapy. I don’t need meds anymore so I’m not dealing with side effects. I’m starting to lose the weight that I gained while on the meds. I have real emotions. I am me again, not some watered down version of me.

At Strength of Mind Behavioral, we are dedicated to making psychiatry innovative, effective and accessible throughout our area. By using diverse, personalized and comprehensive treatment methods, we aim to meet a variety of patients’ needs. We were the first in Tulsa to provide TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation). TMS therapy is an FDA approved, noninvasive medical treatment for major depression. The treatment gives direct MRI strength magnetic pulse stimulation to the frontal lobe of the brain, compelling neurons to start firing, which leads to restoring the brain to normal functioning levels while lifting moods and encouraging ambition. TMS therapy has many advantages, including no medical side effects, the patient is fully awake during treatments, and results are known definitely within four to six weeks.

Our team strives to partner with you in your journey to regain your quality of life, restore your health and rediscover a life that is free from depression. TMS therapy is now covered by insurance companies including Medicare. NeuroStar has been featured on the Dr. Oz Show: www.doctoroz.com/videos/transcranialmagnetic-stimulation-cure-depression-pt-1. One of the hallmarks of SoonerLawn is quick results. “We don’t have to tell our customers their lawns are getting better. They can see improvement each time we’re there,” says Michael. One cus-

A thick, lush, head-turning landscape this summer begins with a phone call today to SoonerLawn. So much of caring for a lawn comes down to knowing what needs to be done and when to do it. For the past 10 years, SoonerLawn has been delivering a six-step lawn care program from early spring through fall that gets rid of weeds and nourishes grass so it will look good year-round. Owner and U.S. Army Captain Michael Bolton says that early spring is the best time to begin preparing your lawn. SoonerLawn’s six-step program begins with an application of preemergent herbicide for crabgrass control, continues with additional weed control and fertilizers during spring and summer, and ends with a winterization weed control in the fall. While many homeowners treat their own lawns and obtain so-so results, the SoonerLawn professionals take things to the next level by treating lawns with the right formulations for that particular grass at the right times throughout the year for optimum results, applying lime to regulate proper soil pH to allow maximum effectiveness of fertilizers, and monitoring for insects and diseases.

Whether the event is indoors or outdoors, they are ready to facilitate the vision. Conferences and concerts featuring world-class talent frequently fill seats at the Mabee Center. On April 7, the OSU Tulsa Business Forum brings Steve Wozniak for a question and answer session at the Johnston Theatre. Wozniak, co-founder of Apple and inventor of the Apple II computer, is offering a rare opportunity for Tulsans who are interested in his storied career and thoughts on the current state of technology. On April 11, Grammy-nominated singer/ songwriter Matthew West will perform for a packed house. Touring with West are special guests Mr. Talkbox and Colton Dixon. Every year, ORU hosts com-

Charity events are especially well-suited for the campus, which boasts a scenic walking path and wide open green spaces with plenty of shade trees. The campus offers two sanctioned courses, so city streets are seldom closed for races. On Sunday, April 19, the Parkinson Foundation of Oklahoma hosts A Walk in the Park. The sanctioned 5K and 1 mile fun run/walk is open to people of all ages and abilities, as well as dogs on a leash. Registration is free, though donations are encouraged. A Walk in the Park kicks off in the Mabee Center parking lot at 2 p.m. with registration at 1 p.m. Oral Roberts University is a world-recognized institution with deep ties to Tulsa. Tulsa New Holland Owner Mike McCrate said, “We were the ninth largest Cub Cadet dealer in North America last year.” Cub Cadet has more than 1,300 dealers across the country, and Tulsa New Holland has been ranked in the top 100 since 2000. When asked how he got into the “tractor business” Mike responded that he managed the parts department of a LincolnMercury dealership in Alva, Oklahoma while in college, and when he graduated college in 1974, he was hired as parts manager at the New Holland company store in Perryton, Texas. Mike worked for New Holland company 15 years at various locations and in various roles: parts manager, retail sales representative and retail store manager. Mike came to Tulsa in 1986 as store manager at Tulsa New Holland, and he bought the dealership from New Holland in 1989. “We’ve become somewhat of a ‘rare bear’ in the industry, in that we are still family-owned and operated and do all of our business out of one store,” said Mike. Two of his sons are part of the operation, and other employees think of themselves as part of the Tulsa New Holland family. Some have been employed by Mike for 10 to 20 years. He is known as a “down-to-earth guy” who respects and appreciates his employees and the successful business the team has built over the years. The respect is mutual. Kelly came to Tulsa without a job, and Mike did offer to employ him for six to eight weeks to do odd jobs including sweeping the shop and painting used equipment. At the end of the “trial period,” he was offered full-time employment. He has served the company as parts department manager and salesman, and was promoted to general manager a little over a year ago. Other members of the outstanding Tulsa New Holland management team include Travis McCrate, service manager; John Asmus, parts manager; and Tim McCrate, sales specialist. Tulsa New Holland has an A+ rating with the Tulsa BBB. For an advanced $12 ticket or $15 on the day of the event (if tickets are still available) participants will be able to test the wares of local eateries and wineries who will be set up in various downtown businesses. The Taste of Claremore will include food from the Hammett House, Walke Brothers Meat, The Pink House, the Belvidere Mansion Tea Room, Papa John’s Pizza, Boomarang Diner, Country Inn Bed & Breakfast, El Azteca, El Maguey, El Charro, Charlie’s Chicken, Sam’s Club and Ol’ Dutchman’s Bakery, Fried Pie, OkeOzark Winery, Blue Coyote Winery and El Banquete, as well as many more. “We’re still recruiting restaurants and wineries,” says Cindy Bissett, executive director of Claremore Main Street. “We are expecting many more to sign up to share their treats at this fun event. Each restaurant will be providing a wide variety of foods from their menus, and we have some unique eateries in our community.” The Pink House’s signature baked fudge is one of the many tasty food items scheduled for Sip, Savor and Shop. “It’s our popular, hot, ooey-gooey chocolate dessert topped with whipped cream,” says owner Margo Stewart. “It’s always fun to participate. We’ll be offering sample sizes, but that’s enough when you’re eating your way up and down Main Street. It’s just the perfect size – about four bites – but its rich-

ness will do the trick.” Sidewalk entertainment will also be provided free by a variety of musical performers. “We’re excited to host this event downtown,” says Bissett. “It’s an opportunity to showcase our unique shops and our specialty restaurants. It will be a relaxing evening for families to stroll, visit the shops and taste the food.” Bissett encourages people who plan to attend to purchase their ticket in advance. “There are a limited number of tickets available and last year we sold out,” she says. Tickets can be purchased at any downtown business as well as the Claremore Main Street office, located at 419 W. Will Rogers Blvd. Tickets go on sale April 18. “It’s always a wonderful time to get a taste of what our area restaurants have to offer,” she adds. “You can also shop while eating. Make Strides Toward a World Free of MS M Walk MS Tulsa builds new connections at new location.

By Christopher Davis “Multiple sclerosis is a disease that destroys connections. Walk MS builds connections,” says Sarah Flowers, development manager at the National Multiple Sclerosis Society – Oklahoma. On Saturday, May 2, the National MS Society hosts Walk MS at Tulsa Community College’s southeast campus. The event serves as a vehicle for fundraising and community support for those affected by MS. At its core, MS is an immunemediated disease involving the deterioration of nerve fibers. The damaged nerve fibers develop scar tissue (sclerosis), which disrupts communications in the central nervous system and produces a diverse range of symptoms, from numb, tingling or weakened limbs to blurred vision, slurred speech and trembling. In short, MS stops people from moving. In keeping with the theme of building new connections, Walk MS is a call to action: keep moving forward and together we can work to find a cure. “Walk MS is a great event that brings people together,” says Flowers. “For those living with MS, as well as loved ones who support them, it’s an opportunity to raise awareness and meet others who are fighting the disease.”

In previous years, Walk MS was held at Veterans Park. This year, the event has partnered with Tulsa Community College to establish a larger and more convenient site for participants and vendors. “We’re excited to bring Walk MS to TCC this year,” says Flowers. “The campus will allow room for the event to grow.” Last year, Walk MS brought about 900 participants. This year, Flowers expects to break 1,000. In the past, parking was a challenge for participants and vendors alike.

look forward to food and drink, as well as Blue Bell ice cream. There will also be activities for the kids, including inflatables and face painting. Also, MidFirst Bank is sponsoring a coin drive to help with fundraising. If $750 is raised at the event, then the bank will match the donations – so be sure to search the couch cushions, empty your pockets and gather up the change in your car’s ashtray! The event will also host Expo MS, which features booths from community and industry partners. Some of the organizations will offer information and resources for those affected by MS,

TCC’s southeast campus, located just off Highway 169 and 81st Street, offers an ideal setting for the event. The sprawling campus, which hosts a segment of the Mingo Valley Trail, provides plenty of space for a walking path to be marked for the event. Even better, there will be ample parking for everyone and easy access for friends and family to line up along the path to cheer on the participants. Walk MS will set up its main booths outside the VanTrease PACE auditorium (located on the east side of campus, facing Highway 169). In addition to on-site registration, attendees can

while others specialize in mobility technology. As attendees peruse the booths and collect information, they can enter for chances to win giveaways. Online registration is encouraged, and can be found through the NMSS website or by going to www.WalkMS.org and entering your zip code in the search bar. Once registered, be sure to save the link in your bookmarks. NMSS makes it easy to begin spreading the word and fundraising. Each participant has the ability to personalize their page with their own story and photos. Additionally, the website provides a wealth of resources related to MS – statistics, research and more. Walk MS begins at 9 a.m. with breakfast, last-minute registration and participant check-in. The walk begins at 10 am. Don’t miss your opportunity to be a part of the strides made toward a world free of MS. For more information, contact

You CAN Help Children A glamorous evening filled with fun and entertainment will benefit the Child Abuse Network at the CANdlelight Ball on April 25.

By Deanna Rebro An evening of glamour, fun and entertainment on April 25 will benefit a cause that has alarming, widespread and increasing statistics throughout the community. The Child Abuse Network (CAN) presents the 2015 CANdlelight Ball at the historic Mayo Hotel as a way to raise awareness and funds for children who are sexually, physically or emotionally abused. CAN, a charter member of the National Children’s Alliance, is the only nonprofit organization focused on child abuse investigation. At its Children’s Advocacy Center in Tulsa, children from newborn to 17 are provided with medical evaluations, forensic interviews, mental health services and case reviews. The entire atmosphere fosters a feeling of safety and comfort for the children and their families. Services are available upon referral 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Last year, CAN served over 2,500 children. They are currently averaging 10 children per day. A conservative estimate indicates one child in every classroom in every school in Tulsa is affected by some

form of child abuse. There is no socioeconomic boundary; child abuse is literally everywhere in the Tulsa community. The organization’s Tulsa model, Children’s Advocacy Center, stands out as the only branch in the state to house the entire team of multidisciplinary agencies to investigate child abuse and provide services under one roof. The 9,600-square-foot building houses offices for the Tulsa County District Attorney, the Tulsa Police Department, Tulsa County Department of Human Services – Child Welfare, OU-Tulsa School of Community Medicine, Pediatrics Medicine and others. Keeping all involved agencies together facilitates communication and expediency to help children at this critical point in their lives. Board President Adrienne Barnett serves on this year’s event committee that is led by Amanda McConnell. Adrienne knows first-hand why centralization is important. In 2008, the family law attorney was trying a case in Arkansas that involved abuse of a young teenage girl. Offices were

April 2015 scattered. No one knew what the other participating agencies were doing. The child was lost in the system. During that time, Adrienne met Dr. Robert Block, a leading authority on child abuse pediatrics. Two years later, CAN asked her to join the efforts in the Tulsa office, where Dr. Block was practicing. “I am happy to be a part of this cause,” she says, “to help raise funds for these kids and to educate the community on how to stop child abuse.” The theme for this fourth annual black tie event is “Every child is a gem.” The sparkle of precious jewels and a candlelight ambience will be the setting for the gala that features a cocktail hour, red carpet photo opportunities, dinner in the Crystal Ballroom, a live auction, live Fund-a-Need and surprise entertainment. Auction items include sports and entertainment packages, fine dining and jewelry. An after-party begins at 9 p.m. with champagne, desserts and slow, rock and swing dancing to the music of Dave and the Wavetones, a nationally recognized 16-piece band that has performed for governors, senators and celebrities throughout the Southwest. “This entire venue allows us to increase awareness of child abuse in our community, tell people what we are doing to end the violence, and honor the sponsors who make our work and our services possible,” says Adrienne. Sponsorship levels range from $1,000 to $15,000. Major sponsors thus far include the H.A. and Mary K. Chapman Charitable

Growing the Good in Rogers County April is Alcohol Awareness Month, and Volunteers for Youth reminds adults how important it is not to provide alcohol to teens. underage drinking. In 2009, an

By Amy Graham

Volunteers for Youth Project Director for Sober Truth on Underage Drinking, Amy Graham, has initiated a county-wide strategy to remind adults not to provide alcohol to teens as part of Alcohol Awareness Month for April 2015. Nearly every vendor in the county who sells alcohol or beer, including grocery stores, convenience stores, package liquor stores and bars, has been visited in the past few months and asked to sign a pledge. The location is then given banners, stickers and window clings to place in their business. These signs will serve to remind patrons that this establishment does not sell alcohol to teens, as well as reminding employees to check for proper identification. Claremore High School SADD club members and ORU nursing students assisted Volunteers for Youth staff to complete this project. Alcohol use by persons under age 21 is a major public health problem. Alcohol is the most commonly used and abused drug among youth in the United

States, more than tobacco and illicit drugs, and is responsible for more than 4,300 annual deaths among underage youth. Although drinking by persons under the age of 21 is illegal, people aged 12 to 20 years drink 11 percent of all alcohol consumed in the United States. More than 90 percent of this alcohol is consumed in the form of binge drinks. On average, underage drinkers consume more drinks per drinking occasion than adult drinkers. In 2010, there were approximately 189,000 emergency rooms visits by persons under age 21 for injuries and other conditions linked to alcohol. Youth who start drinking before age 15 years are five times more likely to develop alcohol dependence or abuse later in life than those who begin drinking at or after age 21 years. Underage drinking in Oklahoma leads to substantial harm due to traffic crashes, violent crime, property crime, unintentional injury, and risky sex. During 2013, an estimated 68 traffic fatalities and 1,911 nonfatal traffic injuries were attributable to driving after

estimated 28 homicides; 15,300 nonfatal violent crimes such as rape, robbery and assault; and 25,400 property crimes including burglary, larceny, and car theft were attributable to underage drinking. In 2007, an estimated six alcohol involved fatal burns, drownings, and suicides were attributable to underage drinking. In 2009, an estimated 435 teen pregnancies and 13,110 teens having risky sex were attributable to underage drinking. Reducing underage drinking is critical to securing a healthy and safe future for our youth. Spring Clean Your Financial Life “Financially Fit” is a column published by RCB Bank to help you gain knowledge on all things financial.

By Kenneth Wohl, RCB Bank Mortage Officer As temperatures rise and the flowers and trees begin to bud, we all get the itch to start spring cleaning. Spring cleaning typically involves deep cleaning your home, organizing your closets and drawers, and removing items you no longer need or use. Why not take this time to do the same thing in your financial life? I’ve listed a few items below for your financial spring cleaning to-do list, including places for potential savings. Insurance: Look over home and auto policies. Not only do you want to make sure your current policy has you correctly covered since home values and personal needs change, but you should make sure your insurance company is charging you a fair premium based on other companies in the market. When shopping, make sure to mention any renovations, updates and claims that may affect your initial quote. Life happens, so when it

does, make sure to update your life insurance policy. Any major life changes such as divorce, marriage, birth of children or death of a family member cause a need for change of beneficiary. Also, lifestyle changes might affect your premiums. Have you lost weight or quit smoking? Certain life changes may allow your insurance agent to lower your premiums. Time: 2-3 hours on the phone and a couple days to get quotes, new rate sheets. Savings: could be significant. Cost: zero out of pocket. Retirement Accounts: Many people choose to invest in their company’s 401k. Not only does it allow you to invest money for retirement, it helps by being pulled out pre-tax, essentially lowering your taxable income. Sometimes we choose to move jobs and careers multiple times in our working lives, accumulating multiple 401k accounts, which can

create numerous statements on a monthly basis. You can rollover your accounts into one account with your current employer (speak with HR about the logistics) or a self-directed IRA with a local investment company or bank. By simplifying your accounts into one, you can clean up your mail box and filing cabinet, as well as open up other investment choices. Time: 2-3 hours. Savings: limitless. Cost: minimal out of pocket, if any. Banking: Do you have multiple accounts at more than one bank? Are you set up with online banking, bill pay, mobile banking or other time-saving, money-tracking services? Having multiple bank accounts at various institutions can sometimes clutter our lives as well as take extra time to manage. Streamlining all your finances into one bank and setting up auto drafts for your monthly obligations, like car payments, mortgage payments and gym memberships will not only streamline your life, it may save money by avoiding late fees. Time: 1 hour on the phone, 2-3 hours to close old accounts, open new ones, transfer automatic deposits and withdrawals and set up bill pay. Savings: varies. Cost: none. Mortgage: If you choose to shop homeowner’s policies as suggested above, you will need to contact your mortgage servicer and request an escrow adjustment/ analysis. Adjusting your escrow account doesn’t necessarily save you money, but it could reduce your monthly payment. After the
