SUMMIT Celebrates 15 The community is invited to the celebration on July 31 from 5 to 8 p.m. By Carol Beck-Round For college friends Sean Cox and Bret McGuire and their wives, Kim Cox and Anissa McGuire, life revolves around family, faith, community and a business partnership. The two men are the co-owners of SUMMIT Physical Therapy, which will celebrate its 15th year in business this summer. Sean and Bret met in physical therapy school, where they both earned degrees at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. Kim and Anissa met at Oklahoma State University. “We were sorority sisters,” Kim
says. Anissa also attended physical therapy school with Sean and Bret. “They graduated together and all got jobs at St. John’s right out of school. I was also working in Tulsa. Later, Sean was offered an opportunity to be the manager of the outpatient physical therapy department at the local hospital in Guyman, OK, his hometown. After a few years of living in Guyman, “Bret encouraged us to move to Rogers County,” says Kim. The Coxes felt it was a good time in their life to move back and be closer to Kim’s family in Bartlesville.
Fast forward to 1999, when the couples decided to take a leap of faith and open their own outpatient physical therapy clinic. “Kim was pregnant with her second child and I had just had my second child,” Anissa says, “but our families decided the time was right for us to go out on our own.” Bret adds, “I always wanted to own a company where I could surround myself with top notch people in a community where we could be an integral part of its life, not only professionally but also civically. It’s been a dream come (continued on page 28)

As Oklahoma’s state bird, the scissortail flycatcher is a symbol of grace and elegance. That’s what makes it the perfect namesake for Claremore Expo’s inaugural Scissortail Wine Festival, being held at the Claremore Expo Center on July 19, 2014 from 1 to 6 p.m. That afternoon, guests

ASK THE MONEY MAVEN STRAIGHT-FORWARD, NO-NONSENSE TALK ABOUT YOUR MONEY
Beginning With The End In Mind BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT
I was blessed this past year with the honor of sitting at the bedside of one of my very first clients while I assisted him and his wife with arranging for hospice. These are long term clients and we have walked quite a long journey together. Many, many years ago this couple came in to see me with the little money they had saved. They told me their hopes and dreams for when they retired. We came up with a plan. Over the years they have developed their wealth the old fashioned way. They worked hard, kept their expenses low, saved a lot, got laid off, changed jobs, rolled over pensions, and 401k’s. Life didn’t always go as planned. We adjusted our plan to accommodate life. A few years ago we worked with an estate planning attorney to develop a trust, a living will, a power of attorney, a health care directive.
for a few. “I want you to promise me that you will help Mary figure out all of the financial stuff and I want you to make sure she takes the next step and holds on to the things we had dreamed,” he said, and I promised I would. Sometimes things work out exactly as we planned. Sometimes God has a different plan. In the end, you will want to know that no matter what, your loved ones can go on and that you have taken care of them. A life well lived…beginning with the end in mind. And tomorrow, I begin again…with Mary. I am so very grateful that I get to do what I do and help people along this journey. For more information go to www.waterstonewealth.com. They bit the bullet and invested in a joint long-term care policy. Finally, they retired. Within a couple of months of retiring, Chuck was diagnosed with terminal cancer. As I walked down the hall of the hospital to his room, I couldn’t help but think about all of the sacrifices they had made and all the planning we had done. As I entered his room, he recognized me and said “Melanie, this is not what we had planned!” I said “I know. We’ve got to get back on track!” We laughed for a moment and then cried

Make Your Summer Remodeling Dreams a Reality Tile by Tony offers more than simple tile work – the team skillfully transforms entire kitchens and bathrooms. By Christopher Davis
Summer is in full swing, and now is the time to get moving on any plans for remodeling. Fall’s rain will be here before we know it. For those in search of quality craftsmanship from workers you can feel comfort-
able welcoming into your home, Tile by Tony is the first call to make. Tony Sementi opened his business in 1982 with an emphasis on tile work. Gradually, he realized it made sense to take on larger bathroom and kitchen projects, and began

applying his skill and eye for detail beyond the tile work he’d become known for. With his wife, Debbie, running the office and daughters holding down the fort at the showroom, Sementi’s family makes up the foundation of Tile by Tony. Over the years, he’s picked up craftsmen as if recruiting players for a playoff run. Today, his crew is a dream team of sorts, winning over clients with results that boast the finest quality work in the region. As with any successful team, coaching is as important as the individual players. Sementi has invested precious time
and energy into training his workers, and is not the type to supervise from behind a desk. “I’m real hands on, and that makes a difference,” he says. Tony visits each project site every day to be sure everything is running smoothly and everyone is on the same page. And with very low turnover amongst his crew, Sementi is confident in plans being executed with the same degree of accuracy and attention to detail that brought him early success. “We want things to last,” he says. After all, what good is it to do a job that will not hold up to years of use and living? “We focus on doing things the right way,” says Sementi. “If you think hiring a professional is expensive, wait until you hire an amateur to do the job.” And this is the idea to keep in mind as you consider whether to do it yourself, hire a professional, or take a chance on that friend of a coworker you keep hearing about at the water cooler. “You’ve got to know these people are going to be friendly and safe,” Sementi adds.

The crew at Tile by Tony is courteous, clean, professional and trustworthy. From the floors you walk on to the air your family breathes, the crew will ensure your home remains safe and clean throughout the project. But you don’t have to take Sementi’s word for it. Tile by Tony has received five awards from Angie’s List, a website that compiles members’ reviews of companies and their services. Additionally, the Better Business Bureau has named Tile by Tony to its Honor Roll. Stop in at the showroom in Catoosa and get a hands-on look at various materials and fixtures.

Are you hard to fit? Large or small hat size with eyes set close over the nasal area combined with the lower ear syndrome means you need an experienced optician to fit you and keep your eyewear maintained. Are you tired of feeling baited by unrealistic prices? Only to find out that the eyewear is stripped-down S.V. versions that are cheap, unattractive, fit improperly, scratch and break easily. Many won’t hold adjustments and just don’t have the features you need. Have you tried conventional surfaced no-line progressives in the past and failed to adapt? Technological advances in “DIGITAL” lens manufacturing have radically improved the optics, fields of vision and dramatically reduced distortion so that almost anyone can wear them.
You should get your eyes examined every 1-2 years and more often if medical conditions warrant. The eye exam is a two-fold procedure. 1.) Medical health 2.) Corrective refraction. Many are pleasantly surprised to find they see much better after the exam and new lenses, when originally they had felt they had not changed much. Call us today to set up an eye exam!

EEnjoying Life Again
Spinal Decompression of Oklahoma helps patient look forward to retirement and travel. By Carol Beck-Round Rick Brewster is a new man today. Thanks to Spinal Decompression of Oklahoma in Claremore, Rick is able to sleep soundly each night without the aid of a painkiller. Rick has been employed by PSO of Oklahoma for 35 years. Climbing ladders and lifting heavy spools of wire wore him down. “I was on my feet a lot,” he says. At age 49, Rick had to have a hip replacement. About six years later, the back pain began. Moving to a desk position with PSO seemed to ease it somewhat. However, the pain was interrupting his sleep. In fact, Rick admits to a need for 12 Ibuprofen a day or 2,400 milligrams of the nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug to cope with the pain and inflammation.
He thought the back pain might be caused by the hip replacement. After a visit to his hip surgeon, that was ruled out. “He sent me to a back doctor who wanted to do surgery,” he says. “I didn’t like the idea of surgery, nor did I want to start taking narcotics to ease the pain.” Rick also feared the continual use of Ibuprofen. “I was twisting and turning every night with pain until I got up to take an Ibuprofen.” On a visit to his family doctor, Dr. Dwight Korgan, he mentioned his back pain – which has been attributed to degeneration. After a thorough examination, Dr. Korgan discussed the use of spinal decompression to aid Rick with his pain so he could function in his daily life, sleep better and

get off the medications. After his first four treatments, Rick’s pain began to ease up. He visited Spinal Decompression of Oklahoma two to three times a week for the 45-minute to one-hour sessions. While he admits to being sore at first, there was no pain during the actual sessions. “They also give you a product called BioFreeze, which helps when you get sore,” he adds. “It’s also great when you overdo it every now and then.” Rick finished up his 20 sessions of spinal decompression in January and has been pain-free ever since. “I can sleep all night without pain,” he says. Occasionally, when he overdoes it outdoors – like cleaning and stacking brush at his mother’s house – he feels a twinge of pain, which can be relieved with his stretching exercises and the BioFreeze.
We’ve got your like no one else.
Dr. Korgan advises his patients to do a twice-daily set of stretching exercises that he provides. “I do them faithfully, morning and evening,” says Rick. “It helps to loosen up the back muscles.” Rick is so pleased with his results that he encourages friends and co-workers with back trouble to seek help through Spinal Decompression of Oklahoma. Recently, a friend from out of town recommended the treatment to one of Rick’s co-workers. With both men’s recommendations, the co-worker is now seeking relief from his back pain. “It’s the best thing I’ve ever tried,” Rick adds. “It has helped me so much. I wanted to avoid surgery after other co-workers had undergone procedures for their pain. They told me to look for alternatives and to put it off as long
as I could because it had not really helped them.” Rick is now looking forward to retirement in a few years and traveling in his motor home with his wife, especially to visit his grandchildren in Houston. “Now, I can walk around to sightsee and spend time with my grandkids,” he adds. “Before, the pain wouldn’t allow me to do much walking.” For more information, contact

A Day of Golf for a Lifetime of Change Volunteers for Youth celebrates 10 years of the ‘Smokin’ Hot 100 Golf Marathon’ to raise serious bucks for Rogers County youth.
By Carol Beck-Round You don’t have to be a Jack Nicklaus, an Arnold Palmer or even a Phil Mickelson to participate in the 10th annual ‘Smokin’ Hot 100 Golf Marathon,’ a fundraiser for the Rogers County Volunteers for Youth program. However, you must want to have fun while raising some serious bucks for the nonprofit organization. This year’s marathon is set for July 22 at Heritage Hills Golf Course in Claremore. The marathon is a way for golfers, both duffer and low handicapper alike, to rally support while doing something they really enjoy – playing golf. So, how do you play 100 holes of golf in one day? The golf rules are modified a bit to allow a golfer to finish 100 holes by mid-afternoon, if you get a good early start. Speaking of early starts, you get a free breakfast at sunup fol-
lowed by the shotgun start, usually around 6:30 a.m., according to Executive Director Mendy Stone. “That way we can beat the heat,” she says. What’s so fun about playing golf in July? Well, for starters, you get the golf course to yourself with approximately 18 other participants who have the satisfaction of helping Rogers County Volunteers for Youth in a big way. According to Mendy, “One hundred holes of golf in a day is very doable.” Many golfers in past marathons have played more than that. “In fact,” she adds, “our youngest golfer last year, Andrew Vanaman – who was 13 at the time – had to be forced to quit.” To speed up the play, golfers have their own cart, play at their own speed and may request a cart driver. Golfers may also hit

Also, on the green, any putt inside the leather is a “gimmee.” “We also add in Longest Drive, Closest-to-Pin and Most Accurate Drive contests,” she adds. So, how can you get involved? Each golf participant agrees to sponsor him or herself for at least $1 per hole. “Your $100 donation is payable in advance and is tax deductible,” says Mendy. Then, you must solicit sponsorships from business associates, family members and friends with an achievable goal of raising an additional Whether it’s “V” for victory or “V” for Volunteers $19 per hole— for Youth, both of these golfers hope to survive that amounts 100 holes on July 22 for the 10th annual Volun- to $2,000 per teers for Youth Smokin’ Hot 100 Golf Marathon. golfer. Healthy Produce Delivered Sollymon Farm is borne from owner Sara Causey’s desire to save money and have access to high-quality veggies.
By Carol Beck-Round
Sara Causey’s passion for cooking, eating and having access to healthy produce has led her on a new adventure in life – one also benefitting others. Sara started gardening last year as a means of both saving money and having access to high-quality vegetables. Then, she made a discovery. “I realized I had a green thumb and an abundance of produce from only a few plants,” Sara says. “I shared some extras last year and received great feedback. I knew then that I was on to something.” That something has blossomed into Sollymon Farm, where her garden has spread to a one-acre plot. Sollymon Farm is named after her deceased dog, Solomon. “I named it after my bull terrier, Solomon (aka Sol, Solly, Sollymon, the Sollymonster),” she explains. “We both enjoyed country living and gardening. When he passed away last year, I knew I wanted to honor him somehow.” While the 5-foot dynamo – and that’s in her bare feet – occasionally has gardening help from her father, she is the
sole proprietor and spends approximately 25 hours per week getting her hands dirty in God’s green earth. And that’s in addition to her day job as a corporate recruiter. “I’m pretty much a onewoman show,” she says, when
referring to her organic garden. “Many think you have to have an 80-acre plot to farm, but that’s just not true. I’ve seen people growing vegetables on smaller plots than my one-acre and doing it successfully.” Sara’s garden contains a

little of everything: corn, okra, squash, zucchini, tomatoes, cabbage, lettuce, broccoli, melons and berries. Depending on the whims of the weather, her garden may include a variety of berries – strawberries, blackberries and raspberries. Since her garden has grown, Sara is now offering the fruits of her labor to residents in the Claremore, Owasso, Broken Arrow and Tulsa areas. For $20 per box for once per week delivery or $30 per box for twice per month delivery, the customer receives fresh produce in what is called a Community Supported Agriculture box. “It means the farmer growing the produce selects what is in season and in good condition to go in the box,” she adds. “Since I am using the CSA model, it keeps things simple for me and it keeps the customer engaged. Most people like the mystery of not knowing what’s in this week’s or this month’s box. I want it to be a happy surprise! Also, I intend to include recipes online to help families cook what they have and make their dollars stretch a bit more.” Sara’s passion for organic

gardening led her to purchase Emma, a Dutch rabbit, who provides the chief fertilizer for her produce. “Bunny poo is one of the best sources of organic, nitrogen-based fertilizer for your plants,” she says. “I describe my business as organic, sustainable, ethical, local and transparent. I want people to have a local alternative to the big box ‘organic stores.’ Not so long ago, people knew where their food came from and who was growing it. Now we have faceless entities driving food from all over the country and all over the world.” Sara refuses to use toxins or chemicals of any kind. “It’s important to abide by an ethic of permaculture – meaning you work with nature not against it,” she adds. “It also means seeing the big picture – how plants, animals and climate work in tandem. So instead of spraying chemicals with reckless abandon, you consider organic solutions and long-term impacts. Some chemicals remain in the soil for years after being sprayed. I don’t want to participate in that type of agribusiness model.” To contact Sara to have fresh produce delivered to your work, business or school, contact her via email at sara@sollymonfarm.com. She’s also available for consultations and gardening help on a by-appointment basis. For more information, contact

YYou Can Help Rogers County Students
Donors are needed to help supply children in need with back-to-school supplies. By Carol Beck-Round
Some may take for granted a new backpack filled with crayons, pencils, pens, notebook paper, and other school supplies. However, many students might go back to school next month empty-handed if it were not for the benevolence of Rogers County citizens and businesses who donate their money and time to ensure no child is unprepared for class. Within the next four weeks, stores will be posting the lists of classroom supplies each teacher deems necessary for his or her students to learn. Many students, however, won’t have the luxury because their parents can’t afford the supplies needed to send their children back to school prepared to learn. The learning tools we take for granted can become an added burden to an already stretched budget. Replacing outgrown clothing as well as purchasing the necessary supplies to start out the year ready to learn, many families are
forced to make choices. With fluctuating gas prices and the increasing cost of food putting a dent in their budgets, parents don’t have many options. Sixteen years ago, members of the Claremore First United Methodist Church stepped up to help those less fortunate by providing what each child needed to get off to a good start. Last year, the Rogers County School Supply Drive, coordinated by the church, provided supplies for 2,901 needy children in the county, an increase of 160 children from the previous year. In 2013, children in the following Rogers County schools received assistance through the generous donations of others: Catoosa – 206; Chelsea – 288; Claremore – 1,456; Foyil – 255; Inola – 134; Justus-Tiawah –100; Oologah – 141; Sequoyah – 226; and Verdigris – 95. “Although our church administers the program, we couldn’t do it without the help of many gener-
ous churches, individuals, businesses and civic organizations who donate money to help us purchase the supplies each year,” says Ray Dawson, program coordinator. “The number of children seeking help has grown steadily each year since the program began.” “When you contribute to this program,” he adds, “you can be sure that every penny donated is used to buy school supplies at the best possible price. We use a bid sheet and buy from several suppliers, depending on who has the best price. Volunteers do all the work and the church lets us use their children’s center to pack and distribute the supplies. We are also able to use their stationery for fundraising mailing, at no cost to the program. If we don’t spend all the money, it is carried over in a special account in the church for use on school supplies the next year.” Because the program didn’t receive as much money in
102 W. 5th St.
www.ValueNews.com donations as was spent last year, the reserve funds were depleted. “We now need to set our goal for the 2014-2015 year at $47,000. The initial order for supplies must be placed in early July to receive them in time to distribute by August 1, so we can only estimate what the needs will be. We won’t have the funds when we order, but for 16 years God has supplied them before the bills come due,” Dawson says. The store offers quality merchandise for every season and benefits Hope Harbor Children’s Home & Academy. By Carol Beck-Round
Most of us don’t think about shopping for a winter coat in July, but at Thrift Harbor, store manager Kim Prock wants shoppers to plan ahead. Not only will shopping ahead save money for customers, but it helps the store stay in sync with other stores looking down the road to the next season. While the Fourth of July and summer vacations are on most people’s minds this time of year, Thrift Harbor employees and volunteers have already sorted out donations for upcoming seasons. If you were to take a trip upstairs at the resale shop, which supports Hope Harbor’s Children’s Home, you’d find neatly organized boxes separated by seasons, contents and sizes. For example, the fall and winter décor –Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas – has already been sorted, boxed and labeled, ready to be brought downstairs and arranged in pleasing dis-
plays for the shopper. Boxes and boxes of winter coats, sorted into men, women’s and children’s sizes, stand ready to be carted to the main floor and placed on hangers, ready for those shoppers who like getting a jumpstart on their winter shopping. While not all coats will be put out on July 1, Prock emphasizes to customers that shopping early will save them money and allow them to better manage their finances. “Instead of waiting until the weather turns cold and then having to run into a store to purchase more expensive outerwear, shoppers can start early and save while there is a better selection,” she says. Most coats cost $3, unless individually priced. “We usually have a wonderful assortment of coats for everyone,” she adds. According to the records she keeps, Prock says the store sold 200 coats in July of last year. “I believe that shows our

John Bartram will welcome you with the horticultural history of America as he began it in Philadelphia and Penn’s Woods. He had the plants. He was on a public road out from the city of Philadelphia. He had people knocking on his front door. All he had to do was print a sign that stated the hours of operation and let them in. Fraudsters Out In Full Force This Summer “Financially Fit” by RCB Bank is your personal home fitness guide for all things financial.
By Jocelyn Wood
Fraud season is in full gear. Last month, we offered ways to protect you and your money while traveling. This month, let’s talk about fraud that may occur closer to home, at your local grocery store, the ball park, even at the pool – check fraud. “Summer brings more opportunities for fraudsters to catch us with our guard down,” said RCB Bank Chief Physical Security Officer Christy Wild, who also investigates and processes all check fraud targeting bank customers. During the dog days of summer when the weather heats up, family activities increase and summer vacation fills our head, there is a surge in all forms of fraud, according to Wild. Fraud against bank deposit accounts cost the industry $1.77 billion in losses in 2012,
according to American Bankers Association estimates. Checks remain the payment type most vulnerable to fraud attacks. The most common way for check fraud to occur would be someone stealing your checks and forging your signature to buy merchandise, according to Wild. “For example, ball parks are an excellent place to find a lot of unattended vehicles to break into and steal purses, wallets and electronic equipment.” Another way would be to get your account number and routing number by stealing your mail that has statements or a check payment for a bill you are sending out, Wild said. “They then would produce a counterfeit check, which is very easy and cheap because all you need is a computer, which most people have,” she said. How can you protect yourself?
A purse left in an unattended vehicle is easy picking for fraudsters. Pictured: Christy Wild, RCB Bank Security Officer.
The best advice Wild provides consumers is to not leave anything valuable in your unattended vehicle. “If you have to leave your purse, wallet or any electronic devices in an unattended vehicle make sure they are unseen by placing them in a console, glove box or locking them in your trunk,” she said. Other tips include: Try to keep all banking information out of the mail box unless absolutely necessary, and do not leave mail setting in your mail box for days at a time. Watch your statements or other bank records closely for
any unauthorized transactions. Report any suspicious activity to your bank immediately; the faster they know the faster they can prevent a bigger loss. When out only take what is necessary, for example your keys, purse or wallet and your preferred method of payment be a check, cash or debit card; that way your loss is minimized to only one form of fraud. Never carry social security cards in your wallet or purse. If you suspect check fraud, call your bank immediately to file a statement. For questions about check
fraud or other scams, call RCB Bank’s Fraud Department at 1-877-361-0814. They are happy to help. For more savings tips and other financial articles, go to www.RCBbank.com/newsroom. For more information, contact

HHot Finds at Surceé Surceé has everything you need for summer fun. By Sheryl Sowell
Summer has arrived! For all your gift and décor needs for Fourth of July, family reunions, barbecues, vacation homes, pool houses and more, Surceé Gifts & Home has you covered. Mark your calendars now for their annual Tent Sale happening Saturday, July 26 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Surceé parking lot. Staff is clearing out the showroom and prices
will be 50 to 70 percent off everything in the tent. You’re certain to find some hot summer deals on furniture, décor and holiday items at bargain prices. The store has a lot of great new items in stock for summer, including Independence Day décor, party supplies and patriotic T-shirts; grilling products, aprons and cookbooks; bright and colorful home and gift items; and furnishings for your boat, lake or vacation house. According to owner Laura Sanders,
one of their most popular gift items so far this summer is called Chillsner, an inbottle chiller that keeps your beer cold to the last sip. “We frequently have new furniture, art, lighting and rugs being added to the store,” says Laura. Friendly staff members are always available to help you find the perfect items to decorate any area of your home, or choose a gift for someone special. Don’t forget Surceé offers a large selection of stationery, including gift tags, invitations, ‘thank you’ notes
and calendars. “Kate Spade is one of our most popular stationery lines,” says Laura. Surceé is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Like them on Facebook to keep up with new products and specials.
Display your patriotic pride with Fourth of July party and décor items.

The staff at Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) wants you to stay healthy. Kalli Castille is the director of nutritional support and culinary at CTCA. “It is part of our mission at CTCA to reach out to the community and be
proactive about helping people learn to lead healthier lifestyles and avoid diseases like cancer and diabetes,” said Castille. One way CTCA is fulfilling its mission of community outreach is by offering a series of demonstrations of healthy

July 2014 cooking techniques and recipes. The classes are free and open to the public. All ages are welcome to attend the demonstrations. “Whether you have an existing medical condition or just want to learn some new healthy recipes, we have something for you,” said Castille. The series started last December with a course on gluten-free cooking. On July 7 at 6:30 p.m., the series will continue when CTCA Executive Chef Kenny Wagoner will be demonstrating healthy ideas and recipes for summer cooking. “We have come up with some great, fun ideas for food you can prepare at the beach or in your back yard or for any outings or get-together you may be having this time of year,” said Castille. On July 21 at 4 p.m., Wagoner will present an especially tasty program, “Healthy Sweet Treats for all Ages.” Wagoner will be demonstrating ways to make desserts and other treats without using sugar. “Avoiding overly refined products like sugar has been shown to be of major benefit to maintaining a healthy body,” said Castille. “By using whole foods like coconut milk and yogurt to add sweetness and lemon zest for tartness, you are not only avoiding the negative effects of refined foods, but you are also increasing the nutrition you are getting from the foods you eat.” The demonstrations are being held at Ricardo’s Café, which is the on-premise employee café in the main hospital building at CTCA. “We encourage everyone to come out

Although carpet remains the most popular floor covering choice, Grigsby’s has lots of other products to choose from. Their goal is to provide you with a host of quality products that will beautify your home and meet your particular performance and budget needs. It seems that today’s products are much easier to care for, plus they stand the test of time. The Grigsby’s sales staff prides itself in being good listeners and committed partners as they provide sound advice for helping you complete your home improvement project with an end result that will exceed expectations. “Ceramic wood patterns are huge now,” said Carnino. “They can be used in outdoor rooms, patios, kitchens, bathrooms,

Founded in 1977 by David E. Harris, Black Hat Cleaning Services has served the Tulsa metro area for 37 years, providing chimney cleaning and repair, air duct cleaning, and dryer vent cleaning and repair. In January, second-generation family members took over the reins of managing the business, and they’ve been running full speed ahead ever since. The new management team includes David E.’s son and daughter, David CR Harris and Patience Boles, and David E.’s son-in-law, Michael Boles. David CR and Patience have literally grown up in the family-owned and operated business, and Michael has 25 years of experience in the roofing industry. He joined the Black Hat team almost two years ago to establish and operate the new Roofing Division. When you enlist Black Hat, you’ll appreciate the comfort you find in knowing that an actual member of the Harris family (complete with black hat) will come to your door and supervise or perform the requested services. “The black hat is an integral part of our identity,” said David CR, “and we wear them just about everywhere we go. Dad initiated the practice as he went door-to-door with flyers when he began his business. We still enjoy wearing the hats as we work to help keep customers’ homes and businesses safe and clean.” When you need a new roof or are interested in more information about Black Hat’s cleaning services, call Black Hat. YYou’re Bound to Be Impressed Homeward Bound offers a variety of quality merchandise at reasonable prices.
By Carol Beck-Round Walk through the doors of Homeward Bound and browse awhile. You might just be surprised by the eclectic and fun mixture of items available to appeal to different tastes and different pocketbooks. And, if you’re savvy enough – or even need assistance from the owners – you could probably furnish an entire house with the treasures you’ll find at this Main Street Claremore business. Martin and Nancy James purchased, renovated and set up shop in this 5,000-square-foot historical building eight years ago. While they had (and still do have) an online business, the idea of having a real storefront was appealing to the couple, who moved here from California in 1996. “When I thought about setting up a real store here in Claremore, I was excited,” says Nancy. “It is just awesome.” Awesome is a word many might use to describe the variety of merchandise you’ll find throughout their store. “While we specialize in furniture and home furnishings,” says Nancy, “we have a mixture of all kinds of things.” Those things include rugs, couches, chairs and desks, and just about everything in-between. “We also have booths with vendors
Nancy James and the family dog, Jesse, invite everyone to stop by and browse through Homeward Bound. offering everything from a $5 china cup and saucer to a high-end lamp,” she adds. “It’s just really all over the place – meaning you never know what you’ll find. You can pick up quality furnishings at a fantastic price.” Part of the store is also dedicated to new merchandise, including bedding and tabletop and window coverings. Offering brands like VHC, formerly known as Victorian Heart, and C&F, shoppers can find entire bedding

sets in all sizes as well as placemats, tablecloths and table runners. Most are 100 percent cotton. Other items are made of burlap or jute. And, if you can’t find the exact color or pattern in stock, you can browse through catalogs and fabric swatches to select the one that best meets your needs. “Customers are also welcome to take home swatches to see if the color matches their décor. We can order and ship to customers at no cost if we don’t have in stock what they want.”
Homeward Bound also offers customers the opportunity to borrow a pillow or other home décor item to see if it fits with their decorating style and color scheme. “When you can physically see something together, it makes it easier to decide,” she adds, “and it’s better than ordering something online and having to return it if it doesn’t fit your needs.” Nancy offers her assistance to those who need help coordinating and making decisions about their
home décor. “We’re always happy to spend time with our customers, whether it’s choosing bedding, furniture or other items to furnish or update their homes.” Homeward Bound offers booth rental as well as consignments. You can drop off your items, such as nicer pieces of furniture, at no charge. “We don’t take a percentage unless it sells,” she adds. Nancy is passionate about Main Street Claremore. “It’s not just our store. We have a street full of wonderful stores – clothing boutiques, antique stores, an art gallery and thrift stores – making it worthwhile for a day trip to our town. It’s a great destination and a fun place to spend the day. We have awesome and unique restaurants nearby as well, including The Pink House and the Belvidere Mansion.” But out-of-town shoppers aren’t the only ones she encourages to shop in Claremore. With its treasure trove of great finds on Main Street, Nancy says, “You don’t have to leave here and go to Tulsa to shop. We invite everyone to come in and browse around. You’ll find a gamut of wonderful home decor.” For more information, contact

Rain Barrels, An Environmental Solution Coca-Cola partners with Tulsa Garden Center to bring this educational seminar to the community on July 31.
By Mike Blake
Tulsa Garden Center and CocaCola present Rain Barrels, An Environmental Solution, on Thursday, July 31 at 6:30 p.m. Alexander Riera of Coca-Cola will present this workshop on creating and utilizing rain barrels for water conservation. Mr. Riera’s workshop is part of CocaCola’s worldwide focus on water conservation. The Coca-Cola Company (TCCC) and their bottling partners announced that they are on track to meet their 2020 water replenishment goal to replace every drop of water used in their beverages and production to the communities. To date, they have replenished an estimated 108.5 billion liters of water back to communities and nature through 509 community water projects in more than 100 countries. In North America, through partnerships and projects, the Company has replenished more than 40 percent – nearly 14 billion liters – back to communities and nature since 2008. Single families account for 55 percent of all water usage, and over half of this usage is for outdoor irrigation, making it the single largest usage of water.

Removing this sediment uses other scarce resources and the sediment often is harmful for the aquatic species. Whatever rainwater is captured by rain barrels doesn’t become stormwater. For those advocating natural gardening methods, the use of captured rainwater provides a source of pure water without any absorbed chemicals from either treatment or ground contact, since rainwater is captured as it runs off the roof of structures. Mr. Riera utilizes rain barrels in his own landscape and can help homeowners with the practical considerations of installing rain barrels and utilizing them for recycling rainwater. The workshop will lead participants in a step-bystep process of installing the rain barrel apparatus onto the empty barrel. Pre-registration is required as Coca-Cola has provided 20 rain barrels and conversion kits for the workshop. The Tulsa Garden Center is offering the first 20 registrants the opportunity to purchase the rain barrels and kits for $20 (one per household) if they are Tulsa Garden Center members, or $25 if nonmembers. The rain barrel and conversion kit is valued at $120 to $140, and information will be provided during the workshop on where to purchase additional barrels and kits. This offer is limited to one per household. All other attendees or those that do not wish to receive a rain barrel and conversion kit may attend the workshop at no cost. The workshop will be in the auditorium of Tulsa Garden Center, 2435 S. Peoria Ave. at 6:30 p.m., July 31, 2014. Call (918) 746-5125 for more information or to enroll. SUMMIT Celebrates 15 true to do just that in my hometown.” Sean, Bret, and Anissa had been working in their profession in different areas of the community, but deciding to give up a steady paycheck while beginning their families required faith. “We saw a need for additional rehabilitation services here in Rogers County,” Sean states. “We wanted to offer services that people were driving to Tulsa for and keep them closer to home.” SUMMIT Physical Therapy was birthed in a 4,200-square-foot former movie theater located in the Ne-Mar Center. When the rehab clinic opened on August 9, 1999, ten staff members served four outpatients that day. Today, the business has grown into three locations in Claremore, Catoosa and Pryor with 64 employees.

SUMMIT also provides therapy in 13 schools in northeastern Oklahoma. One of the services setting the business apart at the beginning was extended hours for working people to receive physical therapy before or after work, even if they commuted to Tulsa. “One of the most rewarding things about my profession is working with people who have had injury, surgery, or pain limitation and are doubtful of their ability to return to normal activity, sport, or work, and then do so after the therapy/rehab process,” states Sean Cox. Sean goes on to say, “It was exciting to be the first outpatient therapy provider to bring warm water pool therapy to Claremore. Aquatic therapy is beneficial to patients who are limited by pain or have difficulty bearing weight in an upright position, and is
soothing on arthritic joints.” SUMMIT is still the only outpatient clinic in Rogers County providing aquatic rehab therapy. Before constructing their current state-of-the-art, 10,500-square-foot facility on Blue Starr Drive in Claremore, SUMMIT relocated next to Reasor’s in the former Mega Movies building, where they renovated the 6,200-squarefeet building to accommodate their growing business. In 2004, they also opened a pediatric facility on Sioux Street. Now, all of their rehab services are under one roof, allowing both pediatric and adult outpatients to take advantage of the aquatic pool. SUMMIT will celebrate its 15-year anniversary on July 31 with a carnivallike atmosphere in the parking lot from 5 to 8 p.m. Snow cones, popcorn, cake,

As they wander the Expo’s air conditioned 30,000-square-foot facility, they will be able to visit with representatives from ten local wineries and taste their products. Claremore’s finest restaurants and coffee establishments will also be in attendance with plenty of samples on hand for attendees to enjoy. “You may think only the best wine grows in Napa Valley,” says Nicole Scalf of Claremore Expo. “But we are out to prove you wrong!” She notes that many people don’t know that fine wineries have sprung up all over the state, and that is why she has invited representatives from Oklahoma Agritourism to set up a booth and visit with wine lovers about the Oklahoma Wine Tour, which features a map of state wineries to help them plan a road trip to discover Oklahoma’s best wine. But she hopes the Scissortail Wine Festival will prove that you do not have to go far to plan a fun tour, as Rogers County has so much to offer. “Guests
discovering new destinations can plot out day trips to our unique restaurants, wineries and coffee establishments,” she says. “The locations are an experience to have, just as much as the items they serve.” The Scissortail Wine Festival has been designed to please the eye as well as the palette. The Route 66 Car Club will have several classic cars on display around the room, lending a vintage touch to the festival. Many artists from northeast Oklahoma, including the locally famous Three Rivers Artists and student artists from Rogers State University, will display their creations for attendees. Three Rivers Artists have spent the last four decades building a wonderful reputation in the area and have established scholarship endowments for RSU’s art students, so it is fitting that these two groups should come together for this event. Some of the RSU art students recently returned from a university sponsored trip to Italy and will be displaying the works they created there. To Nicole, this event is about more than just wine tasting. It will provide a chance for Claremore and

AA Show That Rocks The Tulsa Rock, Mineral and Gem Show will be held July 11-13 at the Tulsa Fairgrounds. By Mark Roe
The Tulsa Rock and Mineral Society’s (TRMS) annual show at the Tulsa Fairgrounds promises to be bigger and better than ever. Liz Thomas is publicity director for the show. “This year we are pleased to announce that TRMS is hosting the national conference for our parent organization, the American Federation of Mineralogical Societies (AFMS),” said Liz. The conference will be held in conjunction with the show, and Thomas said this will put a national spotlight on Oklahoma. The event will be held July 11-13 in Central Park Hall on the Tulsa State Fairgrounds. The theme will be “Rocks and Gems of Indian Territory.”
According to Liz, “When TRMS learned we had won the right to host the 2014 conference, we decided we wanted to use this opportunity to showcase not only the work of TRMS but also to use this as an opportunity to promote the amazing array of different products that bear the ‘Made in Oklahoma’ brand.” Liz said delegates to the conference will receive gift bags stuffed with a wide array of Oklahoma-made items including Head Country BBQ Sauce, a gift set from Tulsa’s own Grandma’s Pure and Natural Soaps, and a selection of syrups, jellies and jams from Griffin’s, just to name a few. Liz’s husband Ben Thomas is co-chair for the show and conference. “Usually we have
from 1,000 to 1,500 people at our annual shows. This year because of the conference, we are expecting to at least double that number,” he said.

While the conference is for delegates, the show itself is open to the public, and Ben said there will be displays, demonstrations, activities, and lectures designed to entertain and inform both avid rock hounds and the general public. “One of the big things this year will be a sluice where the public can purchase bags of mine ore that has been seeded with gems. The ore is put on screens and the dirt is then washed away in a ‘stream,’” said Ben. Slushers get to keep any gems they find, and for an additional fee, lapidaries will be on hand to offer their skills to turn any special finds into jewelry. Another special event at

this year’s show and conference will be daily talks delivered by Steve Arnold, co-host of the Discovery Channel show “Meteorite Men.” Demonstrations at the show will include lapidary arts such as gem cutting and polishing, as well as flint knapping, the ancient art of making arrow heads. Ben said the best rock, gem and mineral dealers from around the country will be on hand to sell their wares, and dealer provided door prizes will be awarded every hour. Single day adult admission to the event is $6, three day passes are $10, and children under 12 get in free. Scouts, military, police and fire department members in uniform will also receive free admission.
