Thank You, Veterans It’s a Dickens of a Time MMS-Payne Funeral Home & Cremation Service continues its eight-year tradition with salute to veterans and flag retirement ceremony on November 11.
By Carol Beck-Round Continuing a tradition that started eight years ago, MMS-Payne Funeral Home & Cremation Service is once again sponsoring Claremore’s annual Veterans Day parade, which will start promptly at 11:11 a.m. on Wednesday, November 11. The parade line-up starts at the Claremore Expo Center and winds its way down Will Rogers Boulevard to the downtown Gazebo near First Baptist Church. According to Frank Friedemann, director of family services at MMSPayne, “Claremore’s Veterans Day parade is the second largest in northeastern Oklahoma. Our parade has grown since its beginning. Festival of Trees
Locals and visitors alike put on their best Victorian-era costumes and head downtown for the annual event that kicks off the holiday season in Claremore. Dickens on the Boulevard is a Victorian-themed Christmas festival held in historic downtown, where attendees enjoy live stage entertainment, authentic chuck wagon meals, pictures with Santa, a living nativity and much more. This year’s event will be held Friday, November 20 and Saturday, November 21, from 6 to 10 p.m. each night. The event is free and open to the public. With the closing of downtown to traffic, families can safely stroll, dance or ride by wagon down the historic main street beginning at 6. Dancing will begin at 8 p.m. both nights. Victorian street dances will include the Grand March, Venetian Waltz, Virginia Reel and others. Returning this year will be the Territorial Marshalls,

In addition, the TriState Gunfighters will be performing a salute. Living window displays will pepper the downtown area, while period craftsmen such as a blacksmith and wood turners answer questions from the crowd as they perform their craft and sell their wares. “We encourage those who attend to wear Victorian-era costumes as well,” said Jessica Jackson, director of Claremore Main Street. “A lot of our volunteers will be dressed up, and it really adds to the fun feel of the event. A costume contest will be held each night with great prizes awarded to those with the best costumes.” Prizes will be awarded in the following categories: man, woman, couple, young (continued on page 24)
By Sheryl Sowell Safenet Services’ Festival of Trees jump starts the holiday season in Claremore each year. This marks the 11th year for the event, with proceeds benefiting the domestic and sexual assault agency for women and children. “What many people don’t realize is how needed this service is in our community,” said Donna Grabow, executive director of Safenet Services. “One in four women experience domestic violence. In 2014, we answered 4,952 crisis line calls. Currently the shelter is completely full, with 18 women and 17 children. This event is so important because it provides many critical services for free to the women and children in our community who need help.” The Festival of Trees will be held Friday, December 4 at the new Claremore Conference Center. Nothing thrills me more than a new prospective client coming in to their first appointment with one of my Money Maven articles in hand and talking about how much I have helped them. Wow! What a huge compliment. It warms my heart because I am passionate about helping people with their money and I am committed to their success. I believe that this is one of the things I am called here on this earth to do. There are a couple of common themes of questions that folks usually have in that free initial appointment. I thought I would address them here for others who may be wondering the same thing. Question #1… Often folks want to know if they are the type of client that we take on. Just so you know, my clients are from varying walks of life. They are Mr. and Mrs. Smith that have worked hard for the last 37 years at XYZ Company that are nearing retirement and need to rollover their 401k’s and pensions. They are 40-60 year old business owners, doctors, engineers, secretaries, dental assistants, nurses who have been saving for 20 to 30 years and have their investments all over the place (from old 401k’s to investment accounts at other firms). They need help figuring out what to do, if they are saving enough, and what else they need to be doing, etc. They are referrals from CPA’s and
potentially grow their money they should consider investing in it.
attorneys that are coming to me after a divorce or death of a loved one because they have no idea what they have and even less what to do with it. Occasionally, I get someone really new to the investment world who is in their 20’s and very motivated. That is amazing too! No, not all of my clients are millionaires. Some are, but most are regular everyday folks who have between 100-250 thousand and have been saving through their 401k’s at work or have investment accounts at other places that they aren’t getting much help with. They are “millionaires in training” that understand it is about working for it and not wishing for it. They are not waiting for things to happen. They are going out and making them happen. And lastly, they value what we bring to the table. They understand that in order to
The other common question we often get relates to what services we provide. How does all this work? I would say 90% of the new folks who come to me want us to manage their investments. They want to bring over accounts or 401k’s from other places and have us manage and invest them. We do an initial financial plan at no charge for them because we have to develop a roadmap for where we are going and how we will get there in order to effectively manage their investments when they come over. The other 10% are looking for a fee for advice type of arrangement. They want to pay a set fee for our time and have us provide a financial plan or offer investment advice. We can do both but the latter is less utilized because with the volatile market environment, investment advice today is likely to change rapidly and also involves out-of-pocket expense. Remember, you’ve got to take the bull by the horns! You’ve got to start. I promise you that you will be glad you did. For more information go to www.waterstonewealth.com. LLeading Ladies Claremore Main Street and the Claremore Chamber recently honored “Leading Ladies” in business and the community.
By Jessica Jackson Claremore Main Street and the Claremore Area Chamber of Commerce recently hosted the Ladies Lifestyle event. Attendees enjoyed shopping at a variety of vendor booths and exhibitors, sampling local cuisine, savoring area wines and even posing at the just for fun photo booth with Maximum Entertainment’s Max McGuirk. Hillcrest Hospital, the presenting sponsor, hosted the popular “Ask The Doctor” seminar. Doctors Kent, Steelmon, Bower and Karnama were the physicians on hand to answer questions from the audience. A wide variety of topics regarding women’s health issues were
discussed. Northeast Technology Center’s cosmetology department students were present to offer free hand massages, and Natural Health and Wellness of Claremore featured chair massages. Free eye screenings were also available with Dr. Lacy Crissup. One of the highlights of the evening was the presentation of the Leading Ladies Awards. Nominations were received from throughout the community to recognize the leadership skills of ladies who make a difference through their service. Jill Donovan, founder of Rustic Cuff, served as the keynote speaker and presented the awards. Six women were honored during the evening.
Recipients included Dr. Melinda Steelmon, Leading Lady in Health, for her compassion, service and sharing her professional knowledge with others. Barbara Starfira was named Leading Lady Behind the Scenes for hundreds of volunteer hours at the Claremore Museum of History. Angie Graves was honored for Community Supporter Leading Lady for her continued service to Rogers County Youth Services, William Barnes Advocacy Center, Salvation Army, Back for Kids and more. Jill Donovan had this to say as she was presenting the awards, “I am so excited about this evening, this is a wonderful opportunity to honor and recognize Women in Business
Leading Ladies award recipients (L to R): Barbara Stafira, Angie Graves, Chantal Vidal, Dr. Melinda Steelmon, Rhonda Bear, Jill Donovan, presenter, Alyson Short and Celina Davis (accepting for Mendy Stone, who was out of the country).

and Community and super exciting to know that these ladies do not even know they are receiving an award.” Awarded the Non-Profit Leading Lady was Mendy Stone, who was unable to attend the evening’s ceremonies. She was caught by surprise when her fellow Volunteers for Youth coworkers used face time to share the moment with Mendy in Canada. Chantal Vidal, owner of El Maguey Restaurant, was honored as Business Leading Lady. In just a decade she has doubled the size of her restaurant, and she is known for her customer service, excellent food and her community spirit. The last award for the evening, per Jill, “summed up all the important characteristics already exemplified by the award recipients tonight.” The final award for the evening was presented to Rhonda Bear who per Jill knows “that true leadership is born out of the understanding of those who would be the most affected.” Rhonda oversees four non-profits while maintaining a full-time career. The non-profits are geared to transitioning formerly incarcerated women to living and working successfully in our community. To date, they have an 85% rate of success, with 25 children returned to their mothers, eight GEDs have been earned, 29 have received a driver’s license and 12 of those now have transportation for employment, and three are now earning degrees from RSU. None of the programs receive government funding – it is all private and corporate donations. Rhonda and 70+
volunteers promote and believe the She Brews Coffee House motto, “Serving success in every cup.” The presenting sponsor was Hillcrest Hospital Claremore. Major sponsors included RCB Bank, J & J Pharmacy & Gifts, Tulsa Federal Credit UnionClaremore, NTC Business and Industry Services and Media sponsor MoreClaremore.com. The Ladies Lifestyle was organized by the Claremore Chamber and Claremore Main Street. To this day, he continues to wonder what happened to Earhart on her final flight. After serving his country for four years, Bill returned to the United States in 1940 and began working for an electric company. He returned to the Navy that same year, when the first peacetime draft in the history of the United States was imposed. “We went to Norfolk, Virginia, and all retirees who had been to sea were sent to man the ships,” says Bill. Bill’s life was forever altered on December 7, 1941, when the Japanese William E. From there Bill spent 18 months in the Solomon Islands. In 1944, he returned to board a new ship, the USS Hamlin (AV-15). While aboard the Hamlin, the crew first traveled to Pearl Harbor, where they loaded aviation gasoline and supplies. The ship was later sent to Iwo Jima to provide a base from which fighter aircraft could protect B-29s in bombing missions over Japan. The Hamlin arrived two days after the historic Battle of Iwo Jima, and along with two other ships established a floating seaplane base for search and rescue missions. Their work was performed amid nearly constant air attack by Japanese suicide planes, and, though many ships in the anchorage were damaged by repeated attacks, the USS Hamlin fought off all attacks without injury. During this time, Bill was designated a Navy warrant officer. When the war finally ended in 1945, Bill was able to return home to Tulsa after nearly a decade spent traveling around the world. He began working for a phone company for $25 a week, and in six years, he was running the head office. He retired as a second line manager after 34 years with the company. Bill spent 70 years as a Mason and 30+ years with Shriners International. He has survived two wives and three children. At 97, he continues to live independently in his own home in Tulsa, with help from Candi, who assists him three times a week. Candi loves to hear Bill’s life story when she visits. “He is an amazing person and has lived through so much. I’m thrilled to hear his experiences.”

Paintings of An American Legend Governor Frank Keating’s book illustrations by painter Mike Wimmer have been relocated to the Will Rogers Memorial Museum entry.
By Pat Reeder The original Mike Wimmer oil paintings from Governor Frank Keating’s book “Will Rogers: An American Legend” have been relocated to the entry gallery of Will Rogers Memorial Museum. Call it serendipity or a home run. Both have a place in Wimmer’s career. The Muskogee native was in Washington, D.C., promoting “Homerun: The Story of Babe Ruth,” a book he illustrated for Bob Burleigh, when he told the author he would like to do a book about Will Rogers. Soon after, he was invited to lunch with then Oklahoma’s first lady Cathy Keating to talk about painting their family Christmas greeting. “For my eight years as governor, Cathy selected an artist to paint the state Christmas card. One year, Mike Wimmer was the artist,” Governor Keating said. “I bought the original of the painting and when Mike delivered it to my office, he inquired whether I knew anyone who could write a children’s book on the life of Will Rogers. Harcourt wanted to publish a book on Rogers and Mike had been selected to be the artist,” Keating said. It was an entry into a new world for the governor. “When I raised my hand, he asked whether I had ever written a children’s book. I told him that I had not, but that I
would like to give it a try,” he said. “I wrote. The publisher accepted the text, and ‘Will Rogers: An American Legend’ won the Western Writers of America best children’s book for the year it was published. A fun result.” The writer and the artist, who were at the Claremore Museum and Will Rogers Birthplace Ranch to introduce the book, returned September 18 for a special showing when oil paintings of the Wimmer illustrations were relocated. The exhibit will remain in place about a year. “These are beautiful paintings and we want to put them on display in our main gallery for the public to enjoy,” said Tad Jones, Museum executive director. “It is a wonderful children’s book and this exhibit will be a great tribute to their work.” Prior to writing the book, the Keatings had been to the Claremore Museums with their children, but this was a different approach. He said he began his research “with Joe Carter’s fine book, then read everything I could that Will wrote about his times and life.” He learned a lot about Will Rogers doing the research. “Will Rogers was all humor and humility, with sparkles of wisdom and goodness and grit and common sense. He was a quintessential Oklahoman.
The Memorial Museum tells hiss important story to America, a story of America at its goodwill best,” Oklahoma’s 1994-2002 Governor said. Wimmer completed 19 oil paintings to illustrate the Will Rogers book. This was just the beginning of a relationship between Governor Keating and d Wimmer. They also collaborated on biographies of Theodore Roosevelt and Chief Standing Bear. Keating’s most recent, “George,” is a story about me America’s first president. He came into this arena through Simon and Schuster, his publisher. k After the Will Rogers book was published, the Wimmer paintings became the property of Anadarko Petroleum Corp of Houston. In 2007, they were presented to the Will Rogers Memorial Museum and unveiled in a main floor gallery leading to the Children’s Museum in the basement. The 19 pieces included 18 of Wimmer’s original book illustrations and a giclee’ reproduction of Governor and Mrs. Keating. When “The Final Journal Gallery” was relocated from near the Museum entry to the last gallery in the Museum, the Wimmer paintings were hung in the Library. Although he and his wife have lived in the East since Keating

Edmond, will continue doing what he loves — painting. For more information, contact

The ‘E’ stands for “ever.” “When a person experiences wellness as a whole, they experience ‘peace,’ rather than experiencing ‘disease,’” said Dr. Michele. Recorded in Dallas, this dynamic duo is seen twice weekly on 4E TV, which airs in the Tulsa metro area on Cox 9/ATT 47 at 10 p.m. Tuesdays and 12:30 p.m. Thursdays. We cannot and must not tell our patients to do that which we are not willing.” Change your life from possible chronic disease, aches, pains and debilitating illness to one with vim and vigor while currently in your 50s, 60s and beyond. Drs. Michele and Mark have created a pathway to wellness by changing lifestyle from the ground up. How to Gift Shop and Stay Debt Free This Holiday Season “Financially Fit” is a column published by RCB Bank to help you gain knowledge on all things financial. Fitness guides – RCB Bank professionals in the field – offer ideas to help you strengthen your money sense, customize savings training, and provide quick and easy action plans to start whipping your money into shape.
By Kyle Head, RCB Bank Product Coordinator It’s 6 a.m. on Friday and you’re storming through a department store to grab the best bargains of the season. The entire store is on sale, and you can’t pass up these amazing deals! Or, should you? You can save money shopping discounts, but when it comes to holiday shopping, consider this: Do you or the person you’re shopping for really need it? Is it worth assuming that extra debt? Like any other person, I like giving gifts, but not to the extent that I have to take out a loan to cover the expenses or rack up credit card debt I may never escape. This year, let’s agree to have our cake and eat it too. Let’s make a shopping plan. Here are some tips on purchasing gifts, staying money-wise and avoiding debt. Set a budget. How much money can you spend (debtfree) on gifts? Make a list of every person you plan to give a gift to. Set a dollar amount for each person. Add up the total
and compare it to your spending limit. Adjust until you are within budget. Make saving for holidays a year-round goal. Does your employer have a holiday savings plan? This is where you elect to have a certain dollar amount taken out of your paycheck monthly. Around November, your employer will deposit your savings into your account. If your company doesn’t have a holiday program, set up a personal savings account with a monthly auto-deposit. Make a list, check it twice. In order to stay debt-free, you must stick to your budget. If you see the perfect gift and it is $10 more than you budgeted, you have to either say no or adjust someone else’s gift amount. There is a third option. Get creative. • Make homemade gifts. An endless list of ideas and tutorials can be found on the Internet (we’re looking at you, Pinterest). • Set up a gift exchange with
friends or family. Everyone brings gs one gift and everyone leaves with h a gift. Fun and inexpensive. • Share a skill. Teach grandma how to use social mediaa or teach your niece how to bake. • Give your time. Spend time me with your family or visit a friend you haven’t seen in a long time. This cost-free gift may actually bee more important than anything you could buy. If you can’t visit in person, a personal handwritten n letter means more than an e-maill or text ever will. • Volunteer. Get your friends or family together and volunteer at a local shelter or pull your resources together to give to a charity. A gift of your time and energy is often more appreciated than just giving materially. The holidays are meant for celebration. It’s not a time to stress over buying the right gift and certainly not a time to worry about your finances. Have a wonderful, stress-free holiday season! We are happy to

GGo Cajun for the Holidays Solve your holiday food challenges and send unique gifts with online ordering ng at Cajun Ed’s Hebert’s Specialty Meats.
By Jim Butcher The holiday season is fast approaching, bringing together family, friends and, of course, food. Cajun Ed’s Hebert’s Specialty Meats can be your best friend during this hectic season. Turkey and ham are the basics for most dinner tables for Thanksgiving and Christmas. However, if you’re looking for something different and delicious, “Cajun Ed” Richard highly recommends turducken. “For the uninitiated, the turducken represents the ultimate main course. The dish features a deboned turkey with a deboned duck stuffed inside, with a deboned chicken inside of that. All three birds are filled with pork sausage and cornbread dressing and seasoned with a special blend of Cajun spices. The result is a savory delight with a hint of heat, without an ounce of dry meat.” There’s only one place in Tulsa to get the best Cajun food made by real Cajuns – Ed and his family – and the place is Cajun Ed’s Hebert’s Specialty Meats at 2101 E. 71st St. Cajun Ed never planned on owning a meat market, much
less a restaurant. His grandfather owned several restaurants and a catering company in Lafayette, Louisiana, and he worked there in high school. He left Lafayette after college to work for an office product company and made Tulsa his family’s home. Over the years, Cajun Ed thought more and more about getting into the food business. “It was just in the blood. My family was involved in it. I’ve always cooked, just not professionally, but I always wanted to.” In 1998, the original market opened at 81st and Lewis. Ed’s idea was to make products under Federal USDA inspection and legally ship them all over the United States. Cajun Ed’s Hebert’s is one of only two federally inspected facilities in Tulsa and has a full time inspector on site daily overseeing production. You can maximize family time by bringing home the finest Cajun-style cuisine from a wide selection of meats including turducken, ham, beef tenderloin and much more. Check out the menu online – www.CajunEd. com – or simply call if you have any questions. Cajun Ed’s prepares meat and seafood orders and packages
them in vacuum-sealed bags. Allll the customer has to do is pick up their order and place the meat in the oven. There are plenty off sides and desserts to choose from om to complement your main course, se, too. Favorites like broccoli cheese ese casserole, cornbread dressing, sweet potato casserole and andoille oille cornbread dressing are amongstt the many options on the menu.. Desserts include key lime pie, pecan pie, chocolate ganache che pie and more. Everything is made ade from scratch, using authentic recipes brought directly to Tulsa sa by Cajun Ed himself. Of course, there are more exotic items that are found onlyy in Cajun culinary circles. For instance, if you want to put some “snap” into your menu, serve your guests alligator meat. If gator ribs sound a bit intimidating, consider Cajun frog legs. And it wouldn’t be a Cajun restaurant without crawfish. In fact, every May, they put on a crawfish festival, complete with live music in the parking lot. If you want to sit down to a true Cajun-styled dinner, the restaurant is open Monday through Saturday. The lunch menu is served Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., with dinner from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday

Free Assistance with Medicare Part D Plans LIFE Senior Services helps Medicare beneficiaries compare and select their prescription drug coverage for 2016. Open Enrollment runs through December 7.
By Carol Carter For most Medicare beneficiaries, the Medicare Open Enrollment period, which runs through December 7, is their only opportunity each year to enroll or change their healthcare and Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage. Unfortunately, most beneficiaries don’t take time to review their drug coverage – and end up paying more than necessary because they are tied to a plan that no longer fits their specific prescription needs. In fact, it is estimated that 90 to 95 percent of Medicare beneficiaries pay too much for their Part D coverage because they aren’t on the most effective plan. Medicare Part D helps thousands of Oklahoma Medicare beneficiaries, especially those with modest incomes or extremely high prescription drug costs, enabling them to better afford the medications they need for both chronic and life-threatening health conditions. According to Cindy Loftin, coordinator of the Medicare As-
LIFE’s MAP team (Medicare Assistance Program), from left: Cindy Loftin, MAP Coordinator; Cindy Reese and Kathleen Seifert. sistance Program at LIFE Senior Services, “Beneficiaries need to review their Part D coverage for 2016. Even if they have been satisfied with their current plan, the across-the-board changes each year in plan costs, co-pays and coverage make it critically important for beneficiaries to take a fresh look at their coverage options.” For 2016, there are 24 standalone Part D plans in Oklahoma, down from 30 this year. All the plans have changed aspects of their 2016 coverage, whether it be their premiums, deductibles, copays and/or their formularies. The only way for beneficiaries to effectively compare plans is using the Plan Finder on the Medicare.
gov website and inputting their prescriptions. The Medicare Assistance Program at LIFE opened its Part D Enrollment Assistance Clinic October 15, offering free, personalized, unbiased assistance based on beneficiaries’ individual prescription needs. The program serves Medicare beneficiaries, both seniors and adults with disabilities, throughout northeast Oklahoma. According to Loftin, “At the clinics we work with beneficiaries one-onone using the Medicare website to help them compare, select and enroll in a Part D plan that best fits their individual prescription and budget needs. In just one hour, we can help them make sure that they

Thank You, Veterans started with a 30-minute parade, but it now runs about an hour and 15 minutes.” Assisting the funeral home with the salute to veterans are the Claremore High School ROTC, JM Davis Gun Museum, VFW, American Legion and the DAV. “We work with these groups to organize the event,” he says. Area high school bands are also invited to participate, and prizes, sponsored by the funeral home, are awarded. Following the parade, a flag retirement ceremony will be held in front of the Rogers County Courthouse. “We retire 800 to 1,000 flags each year,” says Ryan Payne, owner and funeral director.

“People will drop off their old and wornout flags all year round at one of our three funeral homes in Claremore, Chelsea or Inola.” Ashes from the burned flags are then scattered on the graves of Rogers County veterans. MMS-Payne goes above and beyond, offering a long list of family services to veterans and their survivors. In addition to obtaining copies of death certificates and making copies of dated obituary notices and newspaper articles as well as other important documents, funeral home employees help file life insurance policy claims and notify Social Security of death, locate military records and file for veterans
benefits. While this is just a partial list of the services offered, Payne points out that they have even assisted those who never received their benefits after the death of a loved one. “Even if the individual did not receive benefits at the time of their loved one’s passing, we can still help them at no cost,” he adds. Payne says they’ve even helped those who did not use their business for the funeral service. In addition, the funeral home is glad to assist veterans’ loved ones by obtaining burial benefits, grave markers, flag, and a Presidential Memorial certificate. “I assisted a woman who came in a year after her husband – a veteran – had passed on. Trees purchased in the auction are delivered the following day. Several local businesses sponsor the trees, which are decorated by talented local designers. In addition, companies can decorate their own tree and donate it for the auction. “New this year is the option for businesses to purchase trees designed specifically for their company by a local designer and delivered to their office. These tours of the upper floors of some of Claremore’s historic downtown buildings – including The Cranberry Merchant, Boarding House Books, Heinz Jewelry, Homeward Bound and The Will Rogers Hotel – will feature costumed actors portraying animated versions of the city’s history. The tours are $10 per person and can be booked in advance. Space for the tours is limited to 60 people per night. For this two-night event, many of the wonderful specialty shops that line the downtown strip stay open until 8 p.m. This allows shoppers who may not be able to make it during regular business hours a chance to shop locally for unique items. Shoppers can also register for door prizes and a nightly drawing of “Dickens Dollars” to be given away before the dance. This prize can be used in any participating downtown store. “We’re excited to have a couple of
new events at Dickens this year,” added Jackson. “The J.M. Davis Gun Museum will host a BB gun shooting arena. Also new will be the addition of vendors dressed in Victorian costumes selling a variety of items on Main Street.” Jackson said Dickens on the Boulevard is always in need of volunteers. Call Claremore Main Street to learn more. “Dickens on the Boulevard has become a tradition in downtown through the hard work of the great business owners, volunteers and the Claremore Main Street program,” said Jackson. “This is just another way for us to celebrate Claremore’s rich tradition and enjoy our present in the heart of the city.”

Swing Your Partner Round and Round Will Rogers Squares, Claremore’s square dancing club, meets every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month at the American Legion Hall.
By Sheryl Sowell “If you know your right hand from your left and can walk a block, you can square dance – whether you’re eight years old or 80,” says Don Williams of the Will Rogers Squares, Claremore’s square dancing club. Don and his wife, Del, are charter members of the club and were brought together twice by square dancing. In 1972, Don and his first wife introduced their neighbors Del and her first husband to square dancing. Years later, both had been widowed and ended up seeing each other at a dance. “A lot of seniors have met and
married through square dancing clubs,” says Del. Don and Del say the camaraderie is what they enjoy most about square dancing. “My dad was a square dance caller in the 30s and 40s. Back then each circle had an individual caller. Today they have big fancy microphones and one person can call to thousands of dancers,” says Don. “You take old traditions – like farm, families and friends – and bring them into the modern world and refine them, introduce them to the modern equipment, and the fun, friendship and fellowship remain the same.” The square dance consists of groups of four couples and is performed in a compact framework of a square, each couple forming a side. The couples perform a variety of movements prompted by the singing calls (instruction) of a “caller.” Cooperative Square dancing is great exercise and fun movement is for all ages and skill levels. the hallmark of
well-executed square dancing. “Wee welcome both couples and singles to our club, and you do not need to have any experience,” says Del. “Square dancing is good physical therapy and good mental therapy. It is good exercise, and you can clear your mind. There’s a lot of hoopin’ and hollerin’, clapping and stomping, and everyone has a wonderful time.” Learning the basic steps is easy. Experienced square dance callers teach you the moves and the names of the calls that you dance. You practice those moves until they feel as natural as walking. The caller combines the basic moves and steps into whole dance patterns. You and your teammates follow the calls – each arm turn brings a surprise – and as the pattern concludes, all the arm turns bring you back to your partner. “Beginners need a series of about 15 lessons to learn the basics. There are three rules to square dancing: listen to your caller, listen to your caller, listen to your caller,” says Don. “Our club’s caller, Lee Main, is one of the best callers in the country.” Square dancing attire is as individual as you want it to be. Many women like lots of ruffles, with bloomers and can-cans underneath. Other ladies prefer jeans and boots. Men wear western shirts, T-shirts, slacks or jeans, and

LIVING THE WELLNESS LIFE WITH DR.S MARK & MICHELE
The Debilitating Effects of the Stressful American Lifestyle Has your life sped out of control? Has your health began to deteriorate? If so, keep reading, as we have a three prong approach to regain control and bolster your health. Recently while traveling down the streets of Tulsa, Oklahoma, my wife and I found ourselves amazed by the number of speeding cars pass us. We were even more alarmed by the fact that we were actually driving about 5 miles an hour over the posted speed limit. Yes, we were indeed technically breaking the law. However, it truly did astonish us that many people seemed to act in such a way as to indicate that we were going far too slow. Here's the problem, life in itself has become too fast. The excessive speed has now become the norm. Chaos seems to reign. This speed has not only permeated our driving but also our life in general, whether work, relationships, or other. It is important for us to realize that the increased speed of the world is indeed taking a massive toll upon our lives, relationships, and our health. We have seemingly forgotten how to rest, how to listen, how to play, how to laugh, and how to have fun. Our health in turn has suffered. The trends in today's world are shocking. The Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) predicts that by the year 2030, over 60100% of the population in our country will be overweight and/or obese. Now that is shocking! So what can we do about it? Here are three practices to ensure quietness in your soul and life, and consequently, produce vitality in your health. 1. Take a quiet break daily. Set five minutes aside to simply be quiet. Put away the cell phone, turn off the TV, put the
animals in the other room, and ask your family to give you a few moments of silence. During this time, reflect on where you are, what you're thinking, what do you dream, and what makes you happy. 2. Take a 10 minute walk daily. This will ensure, at least a start, of a healthy exercise pattern. Exercise, as we all know, is necessary for proper structural, metabolic, digestive, and cardiovascular function. Additionally, research has shown that exercise is a superior anti-depressant to the oft-prescribed Prozac. After all, there is no such thing as a Prozac deficiency.
You are not destined to become a victim of chronic disease! This is one of the guiding principles of the Functional Medical Institute (FMI), where your answer to health and wellness begins. Under the leadership of Dr. Michele NeilSherwood (known as Dr. Michele), Internal Medicine/Sports Medicine Physician, and Naturopathic Dr. Mark Sherwood (known as Dr. Mark), one can expect a unique experience of listening, care, and compassion with an unwavering commitment to provide the finest opportunity for total healing. The pair also holds monthly educational classes that cover topics such as detoxification, inflammation, family wellness, fatigue, and stress management. Drs. Mark and Michele speak to corporations, organizations, and church groups on the topic of total wellness. Energize your audience by inviting them to speak at your next event.
3. Make a point to say thank you to someone daily. This forces acknowledgment of something good that someone has done for you or to you. It basically gets attention away from any selfimposed misery and puts attention on someone else's good will. It only takes a minute to say THANK YOU. Though these three practices seem simple, they are very profound in their positive effect. It is mine and Dr. Michele's desire to promote healing in your life. This healing occurs daily, many times minute by minute. As you will note, the sum total of minutes spent on the above-mentioned life practices is no more than 16 minutes. We submit your health is certainly worth these very few minutes of daily attention.
