Davis Seeks District 3 Commission Seat “I can and I will put the taxpayers’ interests first in every decision,” said Dell Davis. By Carol Beck-Round When the votes for District 3 are counted in November, Dell Davis is hoping to become the second woman ever to be a county commissioner in Rogers County. However, Davis, a 41-year Rogers County resident, said her campaign is about much more than being a woman commissioner. “At the March Chamber
Luncheon, it was noted that the majority of county offices would most likely be filled by unopposed candidates or decided in the primary. That definitely gained my attention. It concerned me,” Davis said. “Nearly half of Rogers County voters, based alone on party designation, would not have a say-so in who
see a problem, and you have something to offer, you should become involved and be a part of the solution.” Davis, a registered Democrat, says a quote from President Kennedy sums up her approach to all things political: “Let us not seek the Republican answer or the Democrat (continued on page 24)
would be their next county commissioner. My heart and my head told me it was time to take action, to get off the sidelines. It’s as simple as that.” Davis continued, “I prayed about it. I talked to my husband about it. And, I went to the election board and filed for the office. I’ve always believed that if you

ASK THE MONEY MAVEN STRAIGHT-FORWARD, NO-NONSENSE TALK ABOUT YOUR MONEY
The Retirement Red Zone BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT
replace your income in retirement. Your playbook should include multiple investment strategies to both defend against losses and advance toward your goals.
It’s that time of year again. Friday night lights, Saturday game day tailgate parties, the cooler days of fall, and the leaves changing colors. I love this time of year. It is our family’s favorite. With football starting and hunting season just around the corner, life is full of hope and promise. Just as it requires preparation to get ready to play in that big game or harvest that big buck, so too it takes preparation when planning for that “big day” of retirement. The last few years preceding retirement and the first few years immediately following retirement is what we call “the retirement red zone.” The reason we call it the red zone is because these years are most crucial to the outcome of your financial retirement success. It’s just like in football where the red zone is the last 20 yards before crossing the goal and
is critical to winning or defeat, the last few years before and after your retirement can make you or break you. It’s during this time that you need to develop a careful, drawn-out strategic plan….a GAME PLAN. Your playbook should be detailed with all the x’s and o’s and provide a careful strategy for how much you need to have saved, what debt you need to have paid off, what your budget is now and what it will be, and a specific plan for how to
These years often require sacrifice in order to meet the goal line, and a great coach to help get you there. We want to help you make your retirement a winning success! Celebrating a Century of Tradition The Rogers County Fair will kick off its 100th year with a fireworks show, concerts, carnival rides, midway games, food and livestock shows.
By Carol Beck-Round For the second year in a row, a fireworks show will kick off the opening night of the annual Rogers County Fair on Thursday, September 11 at approximately 8:45 p.m. The fair is celebrating a century-long tradition of drawing families to the concerts, carnival rides, midway games, livestock shows and a host of other fun activities. Fairgoers won’t be disappointed this year as a variety of entertainment is on tap for the 100th year celebration. Activities, both inside and outside the Claremore Expo Center at 400 Veterans Pkwy., will take place during the four-day event, set for September 11-14. Admission is free. Texas native and country music artist Cody Johnson will perform Saturday night on the “2 Works for You” main stage located outside the Expo Center. Opening for Johnson is special guest Curtis Grimes – also a Texan – whose fan base grew after he appeared on “The Voice.” The free concert begins at 8 p.m. “I
heard Johnson perform at the NFR in Vegas last year and he puts on a great show,” says Lisa Rogers, marketing coordinator of Visit Claremore. “He’s great for fans of all ages; you’ll really enjoy his music!” The carnival, provided by Fun Time Shows in Missouri, will be open Thursday and Friday nights from 6 to 10 p.m., on Saturday from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m., and on Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Wristbands for all you can ride each night and tickets if you only want to ride a few will be available. Beginning at 2 p.m. on Thursday and throughout the event, Justin Harrell will be hosting a goat roping for all ages. The popular event includes practice sessions and a jackpot, which will be held outside by the Expo barns. “You don’t have to be an experienced roper,” says Lisa. “The roping is on foot and open to anyone who wants to give it a try.” Saws will be buzzing and sawdust flying as chainsaw carvers – new to the fair last year – will

be returning to demonstrate their unique art. Tom and Wendy Zimmer will be demonstrating their craft on Friday and Saturday. “It’s really neat to be able to see a log transformed into an owl or an eagle while you watch,” says Lisa. “It’s a beautiful piece of art when they are finished.” On Friday only, beginning at 10 a.m., the Southwest Dairy Farmers mobile classroom will be on site, where fairgoers can experience the milking parlor. “It’s great

for kids,” she says, “because it is not only educational, but fun for them to see how the milking is done and where it goes.” Of course, no fair is complete without the 4-H and FFA and open exhibits. The Expo Hall will be open Thursday through Saturday for attendees to visit the various displays, including arts and crafts, insects, fabrics and fashions, horticulture, photography, wildlife and other categories. Entries in each division will be awarded ribbons and cash prizes. A trade show in Expo Hall will house vendors selling a variety of accessories and homemade goodies. The Expo Hall will be open Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Livestock exhibitions will also kick off on Thursday with the goat and sheep shows. Livestock shows will continue on Friday with the poultry and swine shows. Beef, rabbits, horses and dairy cattle will wrap up the livestock shows on Saturday. “We’re so excited to be celebrating 100 years of the Rogers County Fair this year in Claremore, and we’re looking forward to another 100 great years,” says Lisa. “The Rogers County Fair is a wonderful event for affordable family fun with a variety of activities for kids and adults of all ages.” For more information, contact

Making CHANGE with Your Change The 2014 Rogers County United Way Campaign kicks off a series of events on September 12 with “Lunch at the Gazebo.”
By Carol Beck-Round
With 24 non-profit agencies counting on your support, the Rogers County United Way is set to kick off its annual campaign with a “Lunch at the Gazebo” on September 12 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. For only $5, you have a choice of a hamburger or hot dog with chips and a drink. You can join others to eat for a cause at the gazebo, where popup tents and tables will be set up to dine outdoors. Representatives from some of the agencies will be available to answer questions. If you can’t get away from your office or business to enjoy lunch at the gazebo, United Way board members will be taking pre-orders for boxed lunches, which will be delivered the day of the event. For those who want their lunch delivered, call (918) 343-1165. “We will also be going door to door to small businesses to take pre-orders,” says Catherine Woldridge, Rogers County United Way executive director. “Our board members will have badges identifying themselves.” This year’s drive chair, Julie Adams Simmons with BancFirst, says, “I am extremely excited and honored to be the United Way chair for 2014. I believe with the leadership and direction of Catherine Woldridge, along with the support of our board and agencies, we can exceed our goal
The United Way annual Golf FUNdraiser is set for September 19 at Heritage Hills. Registration is open for up to 26 teams. Cost is $75 per person. Participation includes a round of golf with golf cart, lunch, refreshments on the course, prizes and a lot of extra fun ways to try to improve your golf game. “We are all about raising money, so making it more fun will hopefully encourage everyone to participate even if they are not an experienced golfer,” says Simmons. “We don’t Board members (L to R): Ryan Neely, Neely Financial Services; judge!” Catherine Woldridge, executive director, Rogers County United Way; If golfing isn’t your Amber Brassfield, City of Claremore; Julie Adams Simmons, drive chair, thing, then check out an BancFirst; Delayna Trease, Summit Physical Therapy; Christi Shires, old United Way comdrive chair-elect, Grand Bank; Daniel Maragoni, Rogers State University. munity favorite with a new twist. Master Gardeners Plot Teaching Garden To raise funds for its latest project, the Master Gardeners Association of Rogers County is hosting a Fall Plant and Garage Sale on Saturday, September 27.
By Lorrie Ward
By nature, gardens are always “under construction,” so the members of the Master Gardeners Association of Rogers County (MGARC) are no strangers to the amount of planning and work involved in their latest project: The Rogers County Master Gardeners Teaching Garden at Will Rogers Park in Claremore. Because they recently received the Hometown Hero Grant from Lowe’s Home Improvement, many of the building materials and plants have been supplied for this project. However, funds are still needed to bring the garden to fruition. That’s why the MGARC is holding a Fall Plant and Garage Sale on Saturday, September 27 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Rogers County Building (416 S. Brady) in Claremore. “We’ve had a spring plant sale for several years, and this is our second year for the fall sale,” says JoAnn Lynch, one of MGARC’s fundraising and promotion coordinators. “And this will be the second time we have added the ‘garage’ aspect to the sale.” MGARC is inviting people to donate their gentlyused gardening items, such as a

lawn decoration they may have grown tired of or a tool they rarely use. Last year’s fall sale was successful, but members feel that more people would attend if they knew the great benefits of fall planting. “Many trees and shrubs benefit from a fall planting because the ground is still warm enough to inspire root growth, but the air is cooler so the plant slows down and does not try to leaf out,” says John Haase of the OSU Extension Office and MGARC coordinator. “This prevents shock to the plant and gives it a chance to establish itself.” The Fall Plant and Garage Sale will feature many trees and shrubs, along with bulbs that should always be planted in the fall (such as tulips and hyacinths). MGARC members will also provide a variety of potted perennials from their
own gardens for sale, which are also appropriate for planting in the autumn months. To keep up with the progress of the Rogers County Master Gardeners Teaching Garden, you can visit the MGARC website at www.mgaroco.com and visit the Organizational News Section, where you can view a timeline of photos. Members are excited about what will be a community focused garden. Visitors will enter the Entry Garden through an arching wrought iron gate, and will be able to tour what used to simply be two to three acres of park land transformed into a series of gardens and exhibits: the Vegetable/Fruit Garden with Composting Exhibit, the Oklahoma Proven Garden, the Native Grasses and Wildflowers Exhibit, the Children’s Garden, the Herb Garden, the Butterfly Garden, the Water Feature, and the Shakespeare Garden, which will include an amphitheater. “This is a garden for both education and demonstration,” says Annie Earley, garden development chair and steering committee representative for MGARC. “Master Gardeners are all about teaching the community to garden.”

HHelping You Create the Retirement of Your Dreams Melanie Hasty-Grant of Waterstone Private Wealth Management offers soon-to-be retirees tips on planning life after retirement. By Melanie Hasty-Grant
My retirees aren’t sitting around in their rocking chairs! The retirement bucket lists of today are full of the hopes and dreams that have finally come to fruition. Through sacrificing, saving, and careful planning and investing these folks have reached their goals and are reaping the benefits. From restoring old cars and Cushmans, to living at the lake, traveling to dreamt-about locations like Alaska and Canada, picnicking with grandchildren, loving on pets who are like children, judging rodeos, starting their own businesses, going to bowl games, and moving to really cool golfing and retirement communities, they are busier than ever checking off that bucket list. In fact, most of the time when I call them about scheduling a meeting to go over their investments, it is difficult for them to find time. They often tell me, “I’m not sure how I ever found time to work.” Nothing makes me happier than seeing them get to do what we had planned for over the last years of their work life. They deserve it. But, this whole retiring thing is not easy sometimes. It is definitely a process! Of course, the primary goal that I assist clients with at this point in my career is the money goal. We do a complete financial assessment. One of the biggest questions that pre-retirees have is, “Will I have enough money to last throughout my
retirement?” Working with a trusted financial professional can help you to determine if the savings you have will be enough or if you need to be saving more. It matters who you trust and who you work with. This is usually a lifetime relationship, and it needs to be with someone that you work well with and that will spend the time needed to make your financial life successful. During the planning phase, we help clients create a debt reduction plan, a retirement savings plan, and an income plan to replace their salary. However, in addition to adjustments and planning regarding your money, there are also other psychological and emotional challenges. This is where the counselor in me takes over. One of the issues soon-to-be retirees face is redefining their identity. Who am I if not for my job title or company position? Developing a “you are more than what you do” attitude helps to make this change. Think of how you might transfer skills of your current job into hobbies, volunteerism, or a part-time job. Another common but related issue is finding a purpose for your life. It’s important to not just be retiring from something, but also to something. One idea to help you develop a new purpose is to develop a bucket list of 100 things or more you would like to do during your retirement. New goals and dreams are important during this time to provide purpose and stability of identity. Develop a sense for how you will create meaning in your life.
Think about how you want to spend your time. There is a lot more freedom of time when retired. Retirees often fantasize about having so much free time to do hobbies, etc. Initially, the fantasy becomes reality and it feels exactly as they had envisioned. They are golfing or fishing every day and having a great time. However, eventually having a routine helps to normalize the transition. We encourage clients to start “practicing” being retired. Start doing some of the things on a daily basis that you plan to do in retirement. Finally, be proactive about potential changes in relationships. Often there are changes in relationships between spouses, children, and grandchildren. For spouses, often spending 24/7 together is more than challenging. If one spouse has always been at home, there can be “turf wars” about who is in charge of what. Also, not having the social time with co-workers in the break room is a change. If you are used to having a lot of your social interaction needs met at work, then this can be difficult. We encourage clients to be proactive in addressing changes in relationships and expectations. I hope you find this information helpful in preparing for this wonderful time in your life. Goodwill and Dell Reconnect A free computer recycling program is available for residents to dispose old computers and parts.
By Sheryl Sowell
Technology is improving every day. Today’s computers are quickly leaving yesterday’s systems in the past – or in your closet, basement or attic. Dell and Goodwill Industries of Tulsa continue their partnership to Reconnect, a no-charge computer recycling program for consumers. The program is intended to raise awareness of the importance of responsible computer disposal and give residents a free and convenient way to do the right thing with their unwanted home computer equipment. “We offer this service to the community so that everyone is able to recycle their old computers in an environmentally friendly way,” says Nancy Webster, Director of Community Relations for Goodwill Industries of Tulsa. Jim Gibbons, president and CEO for Goodwill Indus-
tries International, said: “The partnership has not only allowed us to responsibly recycle and divert millions of pounds of electronic equipment, nationally, from the landfills, but also create green-collar jobs and skills training at a time when both are very much needed.” “The equipment residents bring in is recycled responsibly, meeting Dell’s extensive and strict Electronic Disposition Policy,” says Nancy. “It is the responsibility of the donor to make sure any private or sensitive material is erased from the hard drive before donation.” Goodwill Industries of Tulsa will gladly accept donations of computer equipment at any of their 27 donation sites. In general, Dell Reconnect accepts any brand of computer

www.ValueNews.com the fibers disrupts communications in the central nervous system. This produces a wide range of symptoms in the body, such as slurred speech, blurred vision, trembling and weakness, numbness or tingling in limbs. While some breakthroughs have been made, an outright cause or cure for MS remains elusive. Currently, the scientific community points to a combination of genetic and environmental factors as a likely cause. Research has shown that cases of MS occur more frequently in northern countries, implying a connection between the amount of sunlight (and vitamin D) individuals are exposed to. Scientists also believe that genetic predisposition may be a factor, too, in causing MS. Working hypotheses regarding cause aside, the strides made in gaining an understanding really only scratch the surface; more
research is needed. For example, the NMSS is funding a study in Australia to specifically focus on the relationship between the disease and sunlight exposure. And even though the National MS Society “funds more multiple sclerosis research and provides more programs for people with MS and their families than any other voluntary health organization in the world,” according to the National Health Council, it doesn’t happen without participation and support. Bike MS is the society’s most popular event, and takes place in every state, every year. In Oklahoma, bicyclists pedal along 150 miles of Route 66 on September 20 and 21. Presented by Sam’s Club, The Mother Rode Ride begins and ends in Chandler at the Lincoln County Agri-Civic Center, located at 1179 W. 15th St. Registration is $50 per rider. Knowing Your Mortgage Options Can Save You Money Financially Fit is a column published by RCB Bank to help you gain knowledge on all things financial. Fitness guides – RCB Bank professionals in the field – offer ideas to help you strengthen your money sense, customize savings training, and provide quick and easy action plans to start whipping your money into shape.
By Derek Robinson, RCB Bank Mortgage Originator
When it comes to buying or refinancing a home, there are a lot of mortgage loan options available. Knowing the variety of possibilities can help you choose a loan that will best fit your needs and save you money in the long-term. Let’s explore the assortment of loan opportunities. Conventional Loans: The most traditional avenue for pur-
chasing or refinancing, this type of financing offers fixed terms up to 30 years with a required down payment of 5 percent with monthly private mortgage insurance (PMI). Borrowers who put 20 percent of the purchase price as a down payment or have 20 percent equity in their current home will avoid paying the monthly PMI. The current maximum loan limit (the limit

on the size of a mortgage which Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac will guarantee) for a single family home is $417,000. Jumbo Loans: An option to obtain loan amounts over $417,000. Jumbos are relatively similar to the conventional loan only with a slightly higher interest rate. FHA Loans: Most commonly used by first-time home buyers or borrowers with limited credit history. FHA also offers fixed terms up to 30 years with 3.5 percent down payment and monthly mortgage insurance. Currently FHA requires a onetime upfront funding fee of 1.75 percent of the loan amount that can be financed into the loan. With more flexible guidelines than the conventional mortgage, the FHA mortgage was created to make home ownership more accessible. VA Loans: A program specifically designed for veterans, the VA loan offers a fixed 15- or 30-year term with no monthly mortgage insurance required and 100 percent financing available. The VA loan is available to veterans, active service mem-
bers and also eligible surviving spouses. Veterans Affairs (VA) guarantees a portion of the loan. There is a funding fee that varies depending on the type of service and times the eligibility has been used. Percentages can be found at www.va.gov. USDA Loans: Commonly referred to as Rural Development Loans (RD). RD is designed to help low-to-moderate income earning households obtain financing for rural properties. Fixed terms up to 30 years and 100 percent financing (with monthly mortgage insurance) are available. Like the FHA loan there is an upfront guarantee fee of 2 percent that can be financed into the loan. This is a government-insured loan that is only available for primary residences. Section 184 Loans: A program designed to offer financing to Native American and Alaskan Native tribal members. Fixed terms are available up to 30 years with a down payment of 2.25 percent on purchase prices of $50,000 or above, and 1.25 percent on all purchases below $50,000. HUD does require
a 1.50 percent upfront guarantee fee that can be financed into the loan amount and does not require monthly mortgage insurance. This loan is guaranteed 100 percent by the office of Loan Guarantee within HUD’s Office of Native American Programs. Adjustable Rate Mortgage (ARM): A specialized product designed for certain situations. ARMs have a fixed interest rate for a set number of years and then adjust to a variable interest rate that can change throughout the remaining term of the loan. Interest rate adjustments may move up or down depending on the direction of the mortgage index (rate set by market forces). Knowing your options before you begin the home-buying or refinancing process can help you become a money-wise borrower and make sound financial decisions. If you have mortgage questions, any one of RCB Bank’s Mortgage Loan Officers are happy to help at no obligation. For more savings tips and other financial articles, go to www. RCBbank.com/newsroom. RCB Bank is an Equal Housing Lender. RCB Bank NMLS #798151.

Harvest on the Hill Craft Show Eastern Hills Baptist Church hosts the 6th annual fall craft show on September 20. By Carol Beck-Round
Handcrafted soaps and body products, wood crafts, boutique items and home décor, along with many other items, will be available at the 6th annual fall craft show hosted by Eastern Hills Baptist Church on Saturday, September 20. Located one mile north of Cherokee Casino Will Rogers Downs in Claremore, the doors will open at 9 a.m. and close at 3 p.m. Admission is free. “We’re excited about this year’s event,” says Trista Hill, event organizer. “We’ve also changed the name of the event to Harvest on the Hill Craft Show.” The popular craft show continues to grow each year, with more vendors as well as participants. “Our vendor list fills up fast and we usually have a waiting list,” she adds. “We have returning vendors as well as returning customers. We’ve created a good following, with vendors participating from all over Oklahoma.” Because of the increased demand for vendor space, the
church has added outdoor spots. “Some vendors actually prefer to set up outdoors,” she adds, “but if you want an indoor space, you need to register as soon as possible. Some of our vendors signed up at the end of last year’s event.” A mix of commercial and handcrafting vendors will be on site this year again, including Pampered Chef and 31. Other vendors who have already signed up include an internationally-recognized handmade jewelry maker called Senoj Designs. “Her jewelry, which has been picked up by a London distributor, will debut there in March 2015,” Hill adds. “Her handmade pieces are very reasonably priced and run the gamut from the casual, everyday look to the night onthe-town look.” For women who like bling, there will be vendors offering jewelry, purses, clothing and other accessories in their boutique booths. Some of the jewelry is handcrafted, including personalized key chains and
rings made of wire. “We also have a vendor who has a line of baby boutique items, including embroidered items, all hand-crafted,” she adds. In addition to these booths, one vendor will be offering Survivor bracelets. Made from parachute cord material, the bracelets are sold to raise money for mission groups. The first 50 customers in the door that day will receive a goodie bag containing coupons and freebies from the participating vendors. In addition, all shoppers will receive a vendor map when they enter the door. Each vendor will have a stamp to mark their place on the map, and at the end of the day, drawings for a variety of prizes from area businesses like QuikTrip, Stonebridge Nursery and Fitness Time for Ladies will be held. Concessions, run by the church youth, will offer lunch as well as home-baked goodies during the six-hour event. All profits from the concession

stand help fund summer camp at Falls Creek. Proceeds from booth rentals benefit the church. “We have used the proceeds in the past to help fund a mission trip and help purchase a church van, as well as splitting the proceeds between the youth and children’s departments for their needs,” says Hill. Booth space is still available. Cost is $30 for the 6’ x 8’ space, with one 8’ table provided. The vendor can bring in extra tables. Deadline for signing up is Wednesday, September 17. “This really is a familyoriented event,” Hill says, “and
we are striving for a festivallike atmosphere for our shoppers by adding free inflatables for the kids and other activities. We will also have live music from local bands this year.”

IImprove Your Health Naturally Plexus products helped Claremore woman get blood sugar under control without medication.
By Carol Beck-Round Sheila Urbonas knew she would one day be facing a Type 2 diabetes diagnosis. Her mother had the disease, and Sheila had gestational diabetes during her pregnancies. “I was at high risk and overweight,” admits the Claremore woman, who was diagnosed two-and-a-half years ago. “My doctor recommended a drug called Metformin,” says Sheila. She declined. Instead, the 45-year-old began searching for a healthy alternative to avoid taking a drug with side effects. Her search led to Plexus, a company headquartered in Scottsdale, Arizona. After researching the company, she began using their all-natural products in January of this year. “I was addicted to Diet Dr. Pepper,” she says. “I was downing 10 to 12 cans a day. I constantly craved sugar and carbs. But since I’ve started using Plexus Slim, I’ve kicked my diet soda habit. I no longer have those cravings.” Even better, Plexus has helped stabilize her blood sugar. “Another positive side effect of using
this product is that I no longer have mood swings,” she says. Sheila has also lost inches around her waist, and her restless leg syndrome has completely gone away. “I drink lots of water now and eat healthier than I’ve ever eaten,” she says. “My husband and I even started a garden this year for the first time. We have tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, yellow squash, red peppers and eggplant. I very rarely eat bread now.” While Plexus’s first product – a Breast Chek Kit – was created to help women better screen themselves for breast cancer, the company has grown tremendously with new health-related products, including Plexus Slim. “Initially, Plexus Slim was created to help people get their blood sugar under control,” says Sheila, “but a healthy side effect was weight loss.” Plexus Slim, which comes in a stick pack that is poured into a bottle of drinking water, contains natural ingredients and no caffeine or stimulants.

It’s not a meal replacement or a shake, but a once-aday drink to help with appetite control and food cravings. In addition, the product helps diabetics regulate their blood sugar as well as keep cholesterol and lipids at healthy levels. Other products offered by the company include Plexus X Factor, a turbocharged daily multivitamin, and Bio Cleanse and ProBio5 to help retune the body’s intestinal system. “Most people don’t eat healthy,” she adds, “so these natural ingredient products can restore your body to optimum health. It is amazing and has changed our lives. Even my husband and children are eating healthier.” According to Sheila, the probiotics are “the best in the market, with more active ingredients to help promote proper probiotic balance in the intestinal tract and help increase nutrient absorption.” Sheila was so impressed with the array of Plexus products that she joined their Ambassador team so she could also sell their products to others. “What makes Plexus different from other companies is that we are a health-based company, and not just another weight-loss product,” she says. “Our products contain all-natural ingredients.” After Sheila joined the Plexus Ambassador team, she began receiving weekly and monthly Sheila Urbonas displays three of the products ofchecks. “I love their products and I am passionate fered by Plexus to help those who need help controlling their blood sugar and are on the road to a about helping others feel better,” she says. “Plexus healthy lifestyle. has helped me to become healthier, bring in additional income, and meet a lot of people that have the same health mindset.” To learn more about Plexus, find her on Facebook at www.facebook.com/Sheilalovespink. Davis Seeks District 3 Commission Seat answer – but the right answer. Let us not seek to fix the blame for the past. Let us accept our own responsibility for the future.” “My career has been very rewarding. I’ve had the opportunity to work with great teams who have made a difference. I would be honored to work alongside anyone, regardless of party affiliation, who wants to see Rogers County continue to grow, numerically, economically and with the best quality of life possible for all residents. “I can and I will put the taxpayers’ interests first in every decision. I am qualified, willing and able to make the hard decisions when it comes to budgets, finances and employees. And, I am willing to and have experience in reaching out to encourage and build partnerships with entities at all levels: cities, co mmunities, and other county and state leaders as needed.”
Davis encourages voters of District 3 to not be sidetracked by the negativity surrounding county government or stereotypes. “Yes, building and maintaining quality roads and bridges is front and center in the commissioner’s $30 million plus budgets. And yes, most county commissioners currently serving are men. But, the bigger picture is that coordinating, financing and building transportation infrastructure is key to our county’s economic development. The next commissioner must not only be a good business manager and supervisor, but also be an ambassador for Rogers County. Commissioners serve on local, regional and state boards and authorities, interact with other elected officials, implement legal purchasing policies, and hire and supervise road and bridge maintenance professionals. “It’s important to consider all those factors when making this

year’s District 3 Commissioner choice,” Davis said. “The scope of the office has changed tremendously in the last 30 years, but the mission is the same: to serve and to lead the county into the future.” Davis is married to Mike, an American Airlines crew chief. September Laser Hair Removal Event cleared permanent hair reduction for all skin types. Although summer is over, A New Image is offering reduced prices on their most popular packages beginning September 1. “If you start treatment in September,” says Licensed Aesthetician Gina Picart, “you’ll be ready for next spring.” That’s because there are six treatments in each package, with each treatment performed six weeks apart. “It takes some time from start to finish to complete the series of six treatments, and it’s best to not be sun exposed prior to treatment,” she adds, “so fall/winter is an ideal time to begin and be done just in time for spring and summer.”
Unlike waxing, tweezing and depilatories, laser hair removal results are more longterm. The Cutera laser hair removal system used at A New Image delivers a specially tailored light source for permanent hair reduction for a wide range of skin types. Cutera can remove hair from all parts of the body including the face, legs, arms, underarms and back, as well as sensitive areas like the chest and bikini line. Women and men have benefitted from the Cutera system. “The laser sends specific concentrated beams of light through the skin that are absorbed by the pigment present in the hair follicle shafts,” Picart says. “Because hair

grows in cycles, repeated treatments are necessary to destroy the hair follicles.” Although there is some mild discomfort – some patients experience a mild pinching or stinging sensation – during sessions, patients are sent home with a prescription strength topical anesthetic to be applied 20 to 25 minutes prior to each treatment. “Upon arrival at the office, the patient should be ready for the treatment,” says Picart. As for the time involved for each treatment, it depends on the size of the area. “Obviously, smaller body areas take less time, usually 30 minutes or so, but it becomes more involved when you’re doing larger areas like legs

continued from page 1 and the back,” she explains. Picart is a licensed and trained laser technician with almost 10 years experience in aesthetic laser technology and application. “Laser hair removal technology was the first laser modality that I learned, and I have been trained on the Cutera laser at A New Image,” she says. “We offer very affordable prices.” In addition, Picart stresses the advantage of having a safe, effective treatment in a medical office with state-of-the-art technology by qualified experienced staff under the guidance of an on-site medical director, Dr. Dwight Korgan. “Having a professional staff in a comfortable environment is a plus,” she
adds. “We create relationships with our patients and meet their needs. Enjoy Fruits of Your Labor at Children’s Orchard Owner Kari Hendrix is interested in selling the successful consignment store, which offers gently-used children’s clothing, toys and other items. By Lorrie Ward
Owner Kari Hendrix (right) and employee Kasey with items that won’t stay in stock long –equipment sells fast at Children’s Orchard.
It has been over three years since Kari Hendrix bought the Children’s Orchard in Owasso, and in that time she has implemented changes that transformed an already successful business into a whirlwind of activity. This tremendous growth is enormously positive for the store, Owasso and its surrounding communities – but it is precisely the reason Kari has decided to sell the store. Personal and professional obligations have made it difficult for her to keep up with the booming business at Children’s Orchard, but she expresses deep gratitude for the overwhelming community support she has received in her years as owner, and has no doubt that support would continue for her successor. Since she took the reins in March of 2011, Kari has built

upon already existing systems and implemented new ones in order to fine-tune operations, both for those who are buying gently used clothing, toys and equipment and for those who are selling on consignment. Consignment walk-ins are welcome; however, appointments are encouraged so that time can be most efficiently utilized and items can be carefully evaluated. In order to accomplish this, Children’s Orchard has a large sorting room in the back of the store where workers closely examine items for quality and pricing. Within 20 minutes, clients will know what items will be accepted for sale and will be quoted a fair price for those items, which they may accept in cash or store credit. Storage of items for timely display is another system that Kari and staff have worked hard to perfect. Out of season items are carefully stored for the appropriate time of year and then brought onto the showroom floor en masse for special sales. For instance, all kinds of quality, name brand jeans are ushered in during this time of the year for back to school. Also in September, coats make their way into the showroom, and Kari is glad to report that savings are especially dramatic in this department. “We hold all coats we receive during the off season for the end of September,” she says. “You can get a $70 coat for $9.99.” In October, all Halloween costumes that have been consigned in the past year will be for sale as well. There is something new every day on the floor at Children’s Orchard. Kari

reports that the store always has 10,000 items on display, including gently used (sometimes never used, with the tags still on) children’s clothing in all kinds of name brands, including Mud Pie, Gap, Old Navy, Abercrombie, Ralph Lauren, and Justice; children’s toys and equipment; and other items, such as books, hair bows and dance leotards. Kari notes that the store especially needs children’s equipment such as high chairs, strollers, and baby baths, as these items are highly sought after and often sell within a day. From the moment you enter the doors, it is obvious that Kari has invested much thought and care into the business’s growth, and she is committed to seeing it pass into the hands of someone who is truly excited about the savings that a store like the Children’s Orchard brings to a family’s budget. “No matter what the economy, I personally always want my daughter to look and feel her best and yet get the most for our dollar, and I know there are so many people who feel the same way,” she says. “The sky is the limit for anyone who wants to do this full time.”

Murder Abounds This Fall in Claremore Two murder mystery dinner theatre events, written by local playwright Mark Ogle, will be presented in September and October.
By Sheryl Sowell If you love a great murder mystery (and who doesn’t?), you are in luck. There are two murder mystery dinner theatre fundraisers being planned this fall in Claremore. Both plays are written by local playwright Mark Ogle. On Friday, September 19, at the First United Methodist Church of Claremore, Ogle’s newest comic murder mystery play, “The Guatney Sisters of Neosho Falls” will be performed. How much trouble can two spinster sisters possibly get into in the sleepy little town of Neosho Falls? Well, with the Guatney sisters trouble abounds while trying to run the family farm and boarding house, and raising Pearl’s three grandchildren. Does that trouble include murder? Doors open at 6 p.m. and the play begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are $25 (includes dinner and show). Reservations are required and can be made by calling the church at (918) 341-4580. All money raised from the event will go to the American Red Cross to help provide immediate emergency assistance (temporary lodging, food and clothing) needed by those who experience a disaster, like a home fire. Then on Thursday, October 24 and Friday, October 25, at the Belvidere Mansion, the Rogers
County Historical Society will present an evening of dinner and entertainment. First, guests will dine on a delicious dinner, then have an opportunity to tour the historical mansion (listed on the National Register of Historical Places) and finish the evening having dessert while enjoying a performance of “The Ghost of the Mansion” in the 3rd floor ballroom. The setting for the play is
the living room of a newly built mansion in Claremore, Indian Territory, around the turn of the 20th century. The mansion’s owners, Mr. and Mrs. Bradman, have invited guests for the weekend to help celebrate the move into their new home. Before the weekend ends, someone is “murdered” and the local sheriff sets out to uncover the identity of the culprit. Although the play is not based
on actual events, similarities do exist between the fictitious mansion and the real one. For those who may have seen the play when it was originally performed at the Belvidere in 2004 and think they remember who did it, “Not so fast,” says Ogle. “The ending may not be what they remember.” For information regarding tickets, please call the Rogers
County Historical Society at the Belvidere Mansion at (918) 3411127. Reservations are required. All proceeds will go to the Rogers County Historical Society for renovations to the Belvidere Mansion. Both plays, “The Guatney Sisters of Neosho Falls” and “The Ghost of the Mansion,” will be performed by casts of some of Claremore’s most talented and finest actors and actresses under the direction of directors Dan Huey and Jennifer Carta. During each play audience members will have an opportunity to put their deductive skills to good use and try and solve who did it and why. So if you’re the type of person who thinks they can solve any murder mystery before the first commercial airs or the first chapter ends, come and see if you can be the one and only person who will walk away with the highly prized “Super Sleuth Award.” Come on out and enjoy an evening of entertainment to die for!

Opal Guatney (played by Misty Edwards-Matheson) lays down the house rules to Kenny (played by David Baron, left) and Quentin (played by Mark Karlovitz) if they are going to be boarders in their house. They are rehearsing for “The Guatney Sisters of Neosho Falls” murder mystery dinner theatre that will take place on the First United Methodist Church of Claremore on Friday, September 19.
