Cutting Edge Style Where to Stop Before You Shop Carol’s Place wants your hair and skin to feel as good as it looks, and they’ve got the tools to make it happen. By Lorrie Ward We hear the words “back to school” blowing in the wind everywhere this time of year, but hair and skin get blown by the wind all year long—especially in Oklahoma. That’s why the subject of education is not relegated to August at Carol’s Place Hair and Nail Salon in Claremore. Year round education about hair, skin, and nail care is extremely important to salon owner, Carol Graham, and her staff. They are constantly learning about new products and techniques and passing the benefits on to their clients. Carol and her staff want to help clients look their best, however they understand that the way hair looks is directly related to how healthy the hair is in the first place. That’s why they are very choosy about the products they use during appointments
and what they sell in the salon. Carol loves the variety and quality of the Matrix Biolage line which is why the salon carries those almost exclusively, using everything from the shampoos and conditioners to color treatments. They also offer Biolage travel size bottles, which meet airline regulations. Always popular are Biolage Duo packages. Carol has gone beyond simply offering these quality shampoos, conditioners and treatments. She actively looks for the best, professionally recommended tools not only to use in the salon but to offer for sale to her clients. “I want our clients to have these professional products, so I watch for savings that I can pass onto them,” she says. “A professional grade blow dryer can last (continued on page 24)
The District on Main in Claremore offers insight on the latest trends and products for the back-to-school season. By Lorrie Ward As the school year kicks off, you may be ready to shop for a new wardrobe but still not know exactly what to buy. New clothing is an expected expense; however, there’s no sense in wasting money on clothes that will quickly fall out of trend. Don’t you wish you could peek into the future before you make this investment? You can! Visit The District on Main in Claremore. This charming boutique offers more than just a great selection of clothing and accessories. When you visit The District on Main, you get expert advice and insight from owner Cari Bohannan and staff, who work hard to remain aware of upcoming trend changes, available new products and the hottest product lines. “This year, we are seeing a lot more solids with a trendy style versus the trendy prints we saw last season,” says Cari. “The concentration will be more on style and fabric feel.” Cari notes that certain popular styles, like leggings, are on their way out, while other items, like vests, will still be considered popular. She reports that the trending colors will be cranberry and deep olive, with floral patterns. Soft, flowing materials and suede will be popular as well. Accessory items are undergoing some major changes as well. For instance, many people do not realize that most public places, like sports (continued on page 24)

ASK THE MONEY MAVEN STRAIGHT-FORWARD, NO-NONSENSE TALK ABOUT YOUR MONEY
How Do You Teach Kids About Money?
774 1/2 S Lynn Riggs Blvd Claremore, Oklahoma
BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT
4 OFF
As a business owner and a parent, I can’t tell you enough how important it is to teach your children about money. Schools are burdened with far too many requirements these days. However, personal finance is a topic that is often overlooked in the curriculum. Children are capable of learning money skills from a very early age. The following are some guidelines of skills you can teach them at different stages. Five and Under Begin by letting your little ones help out with simple chores around the house. They can help pick up toys, carry their plate to the sink, help take care of family pets, and help set the table. Children intrinsically love to “help” at this age, which is a blessing. However, you might consider letting them earn a few cents for doing “extra chores” in order to send the message that work=earning money. I remember that my five year old loved to organize my Tupperware cabinet for “extra money.” Not only did this help develop his problem solving skills, but also gave him a sense of how valuable it was to earn money. Children at the latter part of this stage are also capable of learning to count and recognize different denominations of coins and dollar bills. Six to Ten This is a great stage to continue building the “learn to earn” muscle. Allow your kids lots of opportunities to make extra money by doing extra chores. We always had “family chores” that everyone had to do just because that’s part of being a family and “extra chores” that they could choose to make money to buy things that they wanted. In addition, it’s a great time to teach a child the difference between “a want” and “a need.” Needs are the very basics. Food to eat, clothes to wear, and a roof over their head are needs. The newest Nike shoes and Apple iPhone 6 are wants. Don’t let them get too big for their britches. Help them learn to differentiate between the two. (As a side note….this is a lesson I’ve noticed a lot of adults have difficulty with, as well) Eleven to Seventeen By this developmental stage, there are

multiple skills to be mastered. Teach your child how to write a check, how to balance a check ledger, how to create a budget, and how to prioritize wants and needs. Require them to assist you in paying bills and entering your expenses in Quickbooks. Be a good role model. Help them to look for ways to earn money outside of the household (weeding neighbors flower beds, mowing lawns, walking dogs, working at McDonalds or Snow cone huts, or babysitting). Encourage saving/investing 30% of everything they make. Visit your local bank and open a savings account with them. If you have a financial advisor, encourage them to attend your appointment with you to learn about investing. Allow them to spend money on items they “want” so they understand how it feels to be able to purchase something with money they have earned. Lastly, help them to value helping others and giving 10% of what they earn. You must be an active participant in teaching your children about money. Teaching them to be responsible in their earning, spending and saving will help them become successful adults. with only weeks to go, it is time for potential participants to gear up for various competitions. The largest and most publicized competition will be the Mid-America Regional Chili Cook-Off. There is a monetary prize for the winner, but according to Dell Davis, president and CEO of Claremore Chamber of Commerce, the winner will automatically qualify to go on to the ICS World Chili Cook-Off, and this is what attracts competitors. “The money is inconsequential to these competitors,” says Dell. “They want a place in the World
Cook-Off, because there are only so many sanctioned cook-offs and this guarantees you a spot.” Applications are now available for ICS and other category entries, like the non-profit division, in which non-profit organizations like churches and ball teams can enter and win $1000 for their organization. There is also a corporate division, where local businesses compete for “bragging rights.” For fun, there will also be an open division. “We lovingly call the Open the ‘Road Kill Division,’” Dell Davis
“This was a lot of fun last year,” says Dell, who hopes that other groups assemble a team, sign up, and start working on their outhouses. “The police and fire are already planning their incredible outhouses—for speed, looks, and whatever else. Something about ‘wiping out the competition.’” This combination of formal and informal competition, along with an impressive line-up of all types of music and activities, are all part of a consistently well executed plan that keeps people from a multi-state area coming back year after year to experience the Bluegrass and Chili Festival in Claremore, Oklahoma. Festival sponsors include: City of Claremore, KOTV News on 6, Big Country 99.5, Armco Building/ Derickson Portable Building and the Claremore Chamber of Commerce. A New Service to Honor Your Furry Family Members
Angel’s Pet Funeral Home and Crematory provides pet owners with compassion and comfort in laying pets of all sizes to rest. By Lorrie Ward
In September of 1996, Angel Askins rescued a Bernese Mountain Dog and named her Maggie. As delighted as she was to have this sweet animal as a part of her household, she had no idea the bond she would form with Maggie until the following November when Angel’s father passed away unexpectly. “Maggie was my rock,” Angel recalls, adding that she grieved greatly at Maggie’s death several years later, as the dog had become a source of comfort and strength in her life almost from the moment she entered it. At the time of Maggie’s passing, Angel was working in a traditional funeral home, helping grieving families at the passing of their loved ones. It was then she wondered why the same service couldn’t be provided for pet owners. This planted the seed of an idea in Angel’s mind and
heart that has recently come to fruition as she has opened Angel’s Pet Funeral Home and Crematory in Tulsa. Angel wants her pet funeral home to serve as more than just a place to help respectfully dispose of a family pet’s remains. She wants to provide a place of comfort and understanding where the pet’s family can say their final goodbyes and grieve without fear of judgment. Having felt the deep affinity with her own pets and sense of loss at their passing that her clients are feeling, she can provide more than sympathy through the process. She is truly empathetic, as she remembers this experience firsthand. Her many years in the funeral business have helped her understand the grief process people go through at any type of major loss in their lives. “Most pet owners will tell you their pet is part of the family,” says Angel. “The grief is very real.” During such an emotional
and stressful time, Angel knows that pet families need things to run as smoothly as possible. She is very accessible—clients only need let her know at their pet’s passing and she can pick the pet up as soon as possible from the owner or from the veterinarian’s office. Pet owners may also contact her to make prearrangements. The funeral home houses a lovely chapel where families may hold services and have a final viewing before the cremation if they so wish. In keeping with her spirit of compassion, Angel offers all of her services at highly affordable rates, knowing that grief is a heavy enough load at a time like this without the burden of extreme expense. Angel’s funeral services and cremation are open to pets of all sizes up to large dogs. She has taken care of animals as small as a bird and as large as a mastiff. By helping grieving families in this way, she feels she is fulfilling

the dream born so long ago with Maggie’s death. She plans in the near future to build a botanical garden with a parklike, comforting atmosphere so that pet families may come and scatter their pet’s ashes if they so desire and reflect on the life and memories they shared. Fall Fair Fun For All
The Rogers County Fair offers a variety of activities and competitions coming this September.
By Kristi Roe-Owen When the nights turn cooler and the air a little crisper, Oklahomans anxiously await autumn decadences such as oversized sweaters, pumpkin spice everything, and holding hands on the midway at the local fair. The Rogers County Fair, established in 1914, is the perfect place to add to your fall bucket list. With its emphasis on traditional arts and agriculture, the event to be held September 15-18 at the Claremore Expo Center is everything a country fair should be. If the thought of attending an annual fair calls to mind only vertigo-inducing thrill rides, parking lot anxiety, endless booths of mass-produced buyer’s remorse, and regrettable overindulgence, you’ve been missing out on all the goodness of a smaller county fair. While the fair is the largest of its kind in the region, it offers a slowerpaced, more traditional fair experience. The fair is home to a less crowded midway, family events and a focus on local food, agriculture, and artisanship. It is also very affordable, with no
parking or admission fees. Lisa Rogers, Marketing Manager for the Rogers County Fair, explained that the fair presents an opportunity to experience the importance of agriculture firsthand. Visitors will have the chance to connect with food in a way they may not be otherwise able to. Rogers noted that many people never have the opportunity to experience the relationship between farm and table. Children raised in the city are able to see firsthand the animals that produce their food and experience garden vegetables in new ways. “What better place for children to experience farm animals than at a county fair?” Rogers mused. Dairy and beef cows, goats, sheep, chickens, rabbits, horses and pigs are among the barnyard friends to make acquaintance with. Foodies will appreciate the fair’s many culinary offerings. Among some of the can’t-miss items are gourmet egg rolls and street tacos, the fish tacos being a local favorite. The fair offers a venue for experiencing and sharing traditional arts. “Younger generations are
seeing a renewed interest in traditional arts and artisanship,” Rogers explained, citing a resurgence in the creation of jams and jellies. “Many people are canning vegetables grown in their own garden or picked up at a local farmer’s market.” Breadmaking, relishes, salsas, and cakes are among the many food competitions. Local artisans can submit their creations for competition, a tradition dating back to the early days of the county fair. Craft-lovers will swoon over the open class home economics competitions, where Rogers says the crafts and sewing projects residing there are like a “living Pinterest board.” 4H, FFA, local schools, stay-at-home-moms and other residents of Rogers County compete for the coveted county fair ribbons. Some of the more pin-worthy categories include scrapbooking, leather craft, recycled furniture, jewelry, and tablescaping. For anyone with an alternative couture obsession or a super secret cherry pie recipe, all of the fair’s competitions are open to any Rogers County resident. To enter, simply pack up that prized jam and bring it to the Claremore Expo Center

Rogers County Youth Services is excited to announce their annual fundraiser for 2016. Grab your poodle skirt and hair grease because this year’s fundraiser is all about the fabulous fifties, as it has been given the appropriate name of “2016 Sock Hoppin & Doo-Woppin’”. This year’s benefit will be in celebration of the RCYS’ 40th year of service to youth and families in the community. The event will be on Saturday, August 20th from 6-10 p.m. at the Claremore Conference Center, located at 1400 W. Country Club Rd. in Claremore, adjacent to the Holiday Inn Express. The evening will be a fun-filled experience including a Fifties band, DJ, burgers, hot dogs, root beer floats and contests galore. Think back on the days gone by and try your skill at competing with a hula hoop or the bubble gum blowing contest. He showed none focusing, holding things closely of the signs her daughter had while reading, having trouble exhibited and seemed to have normal vision. But some of his friends were wearing glasses and he thought they were “cool,” so he asked his mother if he could get a pair when his sister did. While Shelley had him at the optometrist, she had his vision tested and was shocked to find that Hannah Lechtenberg, CPOA, displays the the young latest Oakley sunglasses, popular with kids man actually and adults alike.

needed glasses as badly as his sister did. “I thought he just wanted glasses to be like his friends,” she recalls. “He showed none of the obvious indicators of poor vision.” That’s why, as the office manager of Dr. Hart’s Primary Eye Care in Collinsville, Shelley encourages parents to have their children’s eyes routinely examined. “If a person is born with bad vision, they may have no idea until they have an examination,” she says. “It is like watching regular television for years and then having highdefinition put in front of you and realizing how much better the picture is.” She notes that most children with vision problems have simply learned to accommodate the problem and that each child, like her own children, will present it in different ways. Some behavior issues can even be traced to vision, as a child who cannot see will not pay attention and may become bored and get into mischief to alleviate boredom. “It is important to start the school year off right and have their eyes examined now,” Shelley advises. “Don’t wait until they are already having
problems in class.” Even if a child starts out with good vision, regular exams are still important because new problems can arise so gradually that they go without notice. This is especially true in the last decade as visually based technology has exploded. “Kids are using computers, tablets, cell phones, and all kinds of electronic devices which place a specific strain on the eye,” Shelley notes. “We have all kinds of technology to help with this, like blue light filtering technology and UV protectant for lenses.” She adds that even if a child doesn’t need a correction, he or she needs protection from these modern day strains. And as her son showed by wanting a pair of glasses to look “cool,” glasses no longer carry the stigma they once did. A child may wear the glasses simply to alleviate the stress their cell phone or tablet is placing on their eyes—or they may just want to make a fashion statement. This is easy to do at Dr. Hart’s Primary Eye Care, where they display the most popular, attractive and durable styles from major name brands like Converse, Crocs, Candies, Vera Wang and many more. They also display an extensive choice of sunglasses from Oakley’s to Rayban and Wiley X. Shelley also points out
that colored contact lenses are popular with all ages and are available at Dr. Hart’s Primary Eye Care, even for those who are not vision impaired. Dr. Hart’s office encourages parents to implement good vision as a part of their child’s health and quality of life. “We take our kids to the doctor to get their vaccinations and to the dentist to get their teeth cleaned,” she says. “Aren’t their eyes just as important?” To answer this question with “yes”— and to help your children see their future in high-definition, make an appointment with Dr. Len Hart at Dr. Hart’s Primary Eye Care today. Dr. Hart is an Optometric Physician and a Diplomat for the American Board of Optometry and has been a valued part of the Collinsville business community for decades. Call for an appointment today.

Carol uses U-Smooth Flat Irons as an example to explain the difference a quality flat iron makes. “U-Smooth is titanium plated, it doesn’t snag, and it leaves hair shiny and smooth,” she explains. “You only have to go over the hair once or twice instead of five or six times, as with other irons.” It’s easy to see that using quality products on your hair also saves time which can be devoted to another important yet often neglected area: your skin. At Carol’s Place, you can not only purchase Mirabella Makeup products, which are paraben, gluten and talc free, but you can also learn how best to apply them. Four times a year, the salon hosts makeup events, where a professional Mirabella makeup artist comes in and does salon makeovers, displays the latest makeup techniques and provides general education on the latest Mirabella products. These Mirabella Makeup Events are just one part of the ongoing commitment to education that Carol and longtime coworker and nail technician Dani Freeman and stylist Terrin Zebert all share. Throughout the year, they all attend special classes, shows and other events to be aware of current trends and fashions. Carol’s Place doesn’t just want to offer

Cari really likes these agendas because they cover seventeen months—August 2016 through December 2017—rather than the typical twelve or fifteen months.

GGrowing the Good Volunteers for Youth helps create healthy change where citizens live, learn work and play.
By Melynda Stone The Chelsea Community Garden was the most recent focus for the “Growing the Good” initiative where a check for $500 was presented to Katie Gibson, garden manager. TSET funds from the Healthy Living Program provided the sponsorship for some of the garden’s start-up costs including installation of a water hydrant, fencing supplies and signage. A local Chelsea non-profit, Café of Life, is the managing body for the garden project. A formal partnership was also recently formed with the Chelsea High School Agricultural Department. Future plans include the sale of fresh produce to the community and educational classes focused around healthy eating and nutrition. The garden is located at the corner of 10th and Pine on a lot donated by longtime Chelsea residents Gaylen and Debbie Urie. Members of the Chelsea community are encouraged to contact Katie about participating in the garden project. Additional support for the garden has previously
been provided by another project of Volunteers for Youth and the Cherokee Nation called Partnerships to Improve Community Health (PICH). Rogers County
Commissioner, Dan Delozier, has also contributed support by providing mulch and the local Chamber of Commerce donated funds to have the water meter put in.
www.ValueNews.com “The garden is small but growing and we have a good variety of produce already in our beds including tomatoes, okra, melons, and strawberries,” said Gibson. “We all know healthy living starts with our food and food comes from the ground. This sponsorship will help further educate our community. This is just the beginning of a place we hope will come to be useful and loved by our community. As funds and
volunteers trickle in, more can be done. Partnerships like this make a world of difference and we hope one day, the youth of our town will picnic here, enjoy lunch here, and ultimately grow food here,” added Gibson Volunteers for Youth Prevention Team members are active in the Healthy Community Partnership, a Rogers County coalition with the mission to achieve lasting positive environmental change in Rogers County. The goal is to prevent substance abuse and promote overall wellness for youth and across the lifespan. The Healthy Community Partnership, PICH and Rogers County’s TSET Healthy Living Program hope more people will take on the challenge of eating better, getting active and being tobacco free. Plug Drainage Leaks in Your Finances RCB Bank offers small and simple ways to save some big bucks.

Money continues to be of the top causes of stress one The first week of August is for Americans, according known as National Simplify to a survey released by the Your Life Week. We cannot American Psychological think of a greater time to Researchers Association. refocus your energy on what’s found 72 percent of important in life and reduce the pressures causing a strain Americans polled reported on your health and happiness. feeling stressed about money. This financial stress also had a negative impact on their lives. This year, right now, choose to simplify your money matters and boost your financial wellness. Where Brenda Romesburg has learned how to avoid to begin? overspending through sacrifice and hard work.
Start by plugging your spending leaks. At first it’s only a little drip of cash spent on morning java, lunch out or the latest and greatest musthave new gadget. Before long it is a full blown crack in your wallet, draining your savings account. The damage can be severe, such as costing more than $15,000 in credit card debt for the average American household, according to a recent study by NerdWallet. “It’s not easy sticking to a budget,” said Brenda Romesburg, single mom who decided to simplify her finances. “But having money in my savings for emergencies, or for when I want to take the kids to the park, to the movies or on a vacation, is absolutely worth the sacrifice.” When Romesburg made the decision to reduce her spending, she started by going over her bills and looking for areas to make cuts. “I changed my cell phone
data plan from 8GB to 3GB,” she said. “That was a $30 savings per month and $360 a year. I can live without the internet for a few hours until I get home to my Wi-Fi.” She also called her cable company and asked about options to lower her bill. “So I had to give up some channels,” she said, “but I’m saving an additional $20 a month and $240 a year. I found new channels to watch and now I don’t even miss the ones I had to let go.” When it comes to spending, Romesburg asks herself daily, “Do I really need to buy this; do I have to have that?” “I reduced eating out,” she said. “Cooking at home saves me at least $150 a month and $1,800 a year. Sometimes it is hard sticking to my menu and only buying what is on the grocery list, but it really works. Saving money makes me feel good and puts me in control of my finances.” Saving money doesn’t require drastic changes to your lifestyle. Small changes on how you spend your hardearned money add up. Take
time to review your expenses and make adjustments that will not only boost your financial wellness but also your personal health and happiness.
