Fair Board Member Seeks Take a Ride the First Weekend in October Commissioner Seat Claremore Main Street presents the 8th annual Dickens of a Ride on Saturday, October 4, 2014.

Ron Burrows – with 11 years experience as a Rogers County Fair Board elected official and 30+ years work history – asks for the public’s consideration in voting him Rogers County Commissioner District 3. By Sheryl Sowell

By Sheryl Sowell

“I would like to extend a big ‘thank you’ to all the residents of Rogers County who recently helped make the 100th year Rogers County Fair a rousing success,” said Ron Burrows, vice president of the Fair Board and general manager of the Claremore Expo Center. Ron has been a Fair Board member, which is an elected position, for the past 11 years. “The fair’s attendance has grown to approximately 20,000 people. We have a wonderful group of committed Fair Board members who each have played a huge role in the fair’s substantial growth.” Ron’s personal contribution to the fair’s success was his devoted effort to bring a carnival back to the fair. “The fair did not have a carnival for years. I dedicated about six years to finding a carnival that was available during the time of our fair in September. I was (continued on page 28)

Bicyclists in northeastern Oklahoma, plan to enjoy a great ride on Saturday, October 4 during the Dickens of a Ride bicycle tour through the beautiful rolling hillsides surrounding Claremore. The ride is sponsored by Claremore Main Street, Inc. and supports their many programs and projects throughout the year. Proceeds from the ride help fund preservation efforts, economic development, and special projects including planters, trees, benches and public art. Dickens of a Ride attracts cyclists from Oklahoma and adjoining states. Ride options include distances of 30, 50, 62 and 100 miles. And for those who like to do their bicycling in a more relaxed

manner, there is a Lazy Lake Loop, which is approximately seven miles. This is a good ride for beginning cyclists or for young families. All bike routes begin and end at Gazebo Park at Muskogee Avenue and Will Rogers Boulevard. Riders will head west out of Claremore through scenic country sides to Oologah. From there, they will cycle areas surrounding Claremore Lake. Riders on the longer routes will continue pedaling east of town through challenging, rolling hillsides before they head back to Gazebo Park. At the conclusion of the bike ride, cyclists are urged to stop by the Gazebo, where lots of really nice door prizes will be awarded by drawings (continued on page 28)

Investing in Others There is so much negative news out there. If you watch TV or read the newspaper, you will notice that it often seems driven by finding the worst of the worst in people, politics, business. It’s all about what is going wrong, who did something bad, and why you should be worried. In fact, there is a saying in the news world, “If it bleeds, it leads.” The reason that media is geared that way is because that is what we have shown them we are interested in. So why are we all so addicted to focusing on the negative?

SSidelined by Injury? Dr. Brad Lawson volunteers his services for several local sports teams.

By Julie Lawson

Friday night football is here. The stadium lights are coming on, and our kids are running onto the football field once again. The temperature is starting to change, and the atmosphere and support that fills a community around their teams on Friday nights has finally returned. For some, the return of football is an exciting and exhilarating time. However, with the collision nature of the sport, the return of football can also mean challenging injuries, concussions, and significant amounts of rehabilitation and continued care for some. When the excitement of the game turns into the disappointment of an injury, many have realized that they don’t have to drive to Tulsa to find the sports medicine care they need. Dr. Brad Lawson, a physician and orthopedic surgeon in Owasso, has provided excellence in service and sports medicine care in the Owasso, Claremore and Collinsville area for the last several years. Dr. Lawson also volunteers

his time as a team orthopedist and sports medicine physician for several of the teams in the area. Dr. Lawson began his career in the United States Air

Force, where he served both as a general medical officer and as an orthopedic surgeon for a total of 16 years. After completing his service, he finished additional subspecialty

training in orthopedic sports medicine prior to coming to Owasso. With his expertise in a wide-range of orthopedic problems and conditions, in addition to his specialty in

sports medicine and reconstructive medicine, excellence in orthopedic and sports medicine care is right here in our communities. As the school year and all of its athletic competition rolls on, or if you’re the weekend warrior with aches and pains that just won’t go away, you can know that great orthopedic and sports medicine care does not require you to drive to Tulsa anymore. Dr. Lawson and his staff office in Owasso at 13616 E. 103rd St. N., next door to Urgent Care of Green Country. They also have an office in Broken Arrow where they see patients on Thursday mornings at 2950 S. Elm Pl., Ste. 456. Whether it is competitive athletics or recreational enjoyment that may cause an injury or a pain, Dr. Lawson and his staff will keep you at your best. How a Line of Credit Can Help Your Farm Credit Needs “Financially Fit” is a column published by RCB Bank to help you gain knowledge on all things financial. Fitness guides – RCB Bank professionals in the field – offer ideas to help you strengthen your money sense, customize savings training, and provide quick and easy action plans to start whipping your money into shape.

By Ray McCartney, RCB Bank VP Loan Officer

Someone recently asked me when the slow time for agriculture is. Sounds like an easy question, right? After several minutes of careful consideration, I decided that the correct answer is most definitely, “It depends.” Some farm families say that there are no slow times. There are just busy and busier times. Those dairy cows still need to be milked and fed seven days a week. Poultry producers use most of their two-to-three week break between flocks to prepare for the next. Ranchers continue to make regular inspections on their herds, checking on herd health and new calves as well as a hundred other things. Of the four seasons, fall may offer a bit of a break for some farmers, but it’s still a busy time for many who have soybeans to harvest, fall calves to check, and wheat and winter pastures to drill. Fall is also a good time to visit about Farm Operating Lines of Credit (LOC), which

purchasing young calves in the spring to graze through the summer. Loan proceeds advanced from the LOC can be used to purchase the calves, medication, and feed, and will be paid back after the cattle are sold in the fall. It’s also good to remember that interest is only paid on the outstanding balance, not the

entire face amount of the loan. A line of credit is a tool, just like a grease gun or a tractor. Used as directed, it can bridge the timing gap between an expense and the expected pay day. It requires some budgeting and planning skills to pay these loans down each year, but it can provide a credit answer to some of those farm income/expense

can help farmers with seasonal or unexpected expenses. A lot of farmers and ranchers have discovered that an LOC is an effective way to bridge the gap between seasonal expenses and seasonal income. Here’s how it works. Let’s say that a farm family no-tills 80 acres of wheat or ryegrass for pasture (a planned farm expense) every fall, but they don’t want to sell their calves (a planned farm income) until later. This creates a gap between a needed expense and the planned income. If they have a Farm Operating Line of Credit, they can advance $5,200 (plus or minus) from their already approved and processed line of credit and be ready to pay for the seed and fertilizer, and reserve the spreader. After they sell their calf crop, they pay on the line of credit. Another popular use RCB Bank Loan Officer Ray McCartney (left) with Merl Troyer, for a line of credit is for farmer. TTake a Ride the First Weekend in October Claremore Main Street presents the 8th annual Dickens of a Ride on Saturday, October 4, 2014. By Sheryl Sowell

Dickens of a Ride attracts hundreds of cyclists each year.

And for those who like to do their bicycling in a more relaxed manner, there is a Lazy Lake Loop, which is approximately seven miles. Riders on the longer routes will continue pedaling east of town through chal-

lenging, rolling hillsides before they head back to Gazebo Park. At the conclusion of the bike ride, cyclists are urged to stop by the Gazebo, where lots of really nice door prizes will be awarded by drawings as participants return. Ride coordinator Cindy Bissett says, “The Boomarang Diner is offering a great Breakfast Ride Special beginning at 6 a.m. the day of the ride.” It will include one egg, two pieces of bacon or sausage, toast or biscuit and gravy, and hash brown potatoes. Milk, coffee or juice is not included with the special, but may be purchased separately. There will also be eight well-supplied rest stops along the bike routes where riders look forward to sitting a spell and taking advantage of numerous home baked goodies and fruit. Excellent mechanical and SAG support will be provided on the Dickens of a Ride until 5 p.m. Be sure to wear your ANSI, CPSC, or Snell approved helmet if you plan on participating in the ride; it’s required. Visit the www.downtownclaremore.org to register online or if you prefer, you may print a registration form, fill it out, and

mail it in with your check. Registration packets may be picked up at Bike-About Bicyles, 300 W. Muskogee Ave., on Thursday, October 2, 5.p.m. until 7 p.m. You may also get your packet beginning at 6 a.m. on the day of the ride. Maps will be provided, and you need to be prepared for some hills. Riders under 16 years of age must be accompanied by an adult who is also on a bicycle and riding with them. Riders under 18 must have a parent or guardian sign a Ride Release. Major sponsors of the 2014 Dickens of a Ride include RCB Bank, Walmart, Bike About Bicycles, Melton Sales and Boomarang Diner. Many thanks to each of them and to each of the riders who help make Dickens of a Ride one of the best in the state of Oklahoma.

PPreserving Cowboy Cooking Culture The second annual Chuck Wagon Cook-Off is set for Saturday, November 1.

By Carol Beck-Round

If they were being pulled by horses or oxen, it might look like an Old West cattle drive. However, the chuck wagons that will be rolling into the Claremore Expo Center will be hauled in on flatbed trailers to participate in the second annual Chuck Wagon Cook-Off on Saturday, November 1 as part of the Will Rogers Days celebration. Beef tips, chicken fried steak

and pot roast were three of the main entrees in last year’s competition, with four chuck wagon crews vying for first place and bragging rights. Tanya Andrews, Visit Claremore executive director, is expecting more entries this year, at least eight. “However, we can accommodate up to 15 teams set up on the West Bend on the Green,” she said. “We work with the American Chuck Wagon Association to recruit wagons from all over the country.” The ACWA encourages participants to preserve this aspect of American heritage through competitive events that involve setting up camp, cooking with authentic old western tools and exhibiting restored or replicated chuck wagons. The fun will begin on Friday when the chuck Alaska and Madi, both from northeastern wagons establish Oklahoma, will be performing at the second their camps, folannual Chuck Wagon Cook-Off. The singers were on season six of “The Voice” with lowed by “authenTeam Blake. ticity” judging.

“While the food judges are local, the ‘authenticity’ judges are experienced and recommended by the ACWA,” she adds. “They judge everything including the authenticity of the wagon spokes down to the drawers in the kitchen area.” Points are awarded to the most authentic wagon and then combined with points earned on Saturday during the food judging to determine the overall winner, who receives $1,000. Food judges are recruited from local restaurant owners and chefs. On Saturday, the chuck wagon chefs get down to business with each team digging a cooking pit. By 11:45 a.m., teams will submit their meals to the panel of judges. At noon, event attendees can begin chowing down. In order to guarantee a plate of the cowboy cooking, Andrews suggest tickets be purchased in advance for $10. Tickets go on sale October 6. The day of the event, tickets are $12. Each meal includes meat, potatoes, beans, bread, dessert and a drink. However, tickets are limited. “We can only sell 40 meals per wagon,” says Andrews. Chuck wagon teams will compete in seven categories on Saturday: Most Authentic, Best Overall and Best Food subcategories for meat, potatoes, beans,

Tulsa’s largest fall festival turns 36 this year. Set for October 16-19, Linde Oktoberfest Tulsa is located at River West Festival Park on the west bank of the beautiful Arkansas River, and offers four days of authentic German celebration, including live music, games and, of course, food and drinks, among number other attractions. On Family Friday, admission to the festival is free from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The carnival offers unlimited rides from noon to 6 p.m. with the purchase of a $15 All-Rides Wristband. Paid parking is available near the festival grounds at $5 and $10, or patrons can ride the free shuttles, which run three routes through downtown, midtown and south Tulsa, near alternative parking areas. “The festival is a timehonored tradition for Tulsans and visitors alike,” says Festival Director Tonja Carrigg. It’s the Ultimate Ladies Day Out The Ladies Lifestyle Extravaganza returns for 9th year of fun, fashion and a full day of activities for women.

By Carol Beck-Round Hobbies, women’s health and wellness issues, as well as fashion and shopping adventures are on tap for the 9th annual Ladies Lifestyle Extravaganza, set for Saturday, November 1 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Claremore Northeast Technology Center located on Highway 88 north of Blue Starr Drive. It’s the ultimate ladies day out where women can explore booths and attend sessions geared toward women’s interests. Teaming up to coordinate the day-long event, the Claremore Chamber of Commerce and Claremore Main Street have designed the extravaganza to provide products, services and information women need and want to make their lives more efficient, more productive, and happier. Regardless of their age or circumstances, women will find something valuable for their lives. Initially the one-day event had been held in March, but it conflicted with spring break plans. “We decided to move it to November this year,” says Dell Davis, Chamber director. “It will be a good opportunity for our vendors

to showcase their products and services, as well as for those who attend to start their holiday shopping.” Shopping opportunities will include booths featuring jewelry, food products, clothing, purses and other fashion accessories, home décor, body products, health care items, cookware and business services. In addition, Hillcrest Hospital Claremore, Presenting Sponsor of the show, will be offering free seminars throughout the day addressing various issues involving women’s health. Topics will address women at different stages of their lives, and participants will have the opportunity to ask questions. Dr. Lacy Crissup with Primary Eye Care will be on hand with a mobile unit offering basic eye screenings for attendees. Claremore’s boutiques and clothing stores will be participating again this year in the popular fashion show – always a hit with the ladies and coordinated by Susan Todd, Cari Bohannan and Nicole Potter. “We’re even more excited this year because we have so many

HHoof It with 4-H Horse Club Three groups will benefit from the Hoof It 5K & Fun Run on October 11. By Carol Beck-Round Three area organizations will benefit from the Hoof It 5K & Fun Run set for Saturday, October 11 at Claremore Lake. With 60 active members, the Rogers County 4-H Horse Club is sponsoring the event, which will start with checkin at 7:30 a.m., followed by the 1-mile fun run at 9 a.m. and the 5K at 9:30. Proceeds from the event will

go toward scholarships for senior 4-H members who plan to attend college, to support educational programs (e.g. clinics, horse judging, and horse quiz bowl), as well as awards for their year-end banquet. Two other organizations, Wild Heart Animal Rescue in Foyil and the Ronald McDonald House, will also benefit from the event. Club members voted to split 10 percent

of the proceeds between the two groups. Both organizations have already benefitted from the 4-H Club’s generosity. “We pass a can around at our monthly meetings and take up a collection for Wild Heart Animal Rescue,” says club president Lyndsey Harvey. “We also collect pop cans and use the money from recycling them to purchase food

and other supplies for the ranch.” In addition, the club has donated used horse blankets and tack to Wild Heart. The club has a long history of supporting local horse rescue organizations. Ronald McDonald House in Tulsa benefits from the club’s generosity as well. Pop tabs are collected and then donated to the cause. According to their website, Ronald McDonald Houses collect pop tabs instead of entire aluminum cans because it’s more hygienic to store tabs than cans, and collection and storage is easier. Participants in the 5K & Fun Run who have registered by September 26 will receive a moisture-wicking shirt (size request guaranteed). The entry fee of $25 is guaranteed through October 6, but shirt sizes are not guaranteed. A late and race-day registration fee of $30 will be accepted with no guarantee of shirt availability. To register – race packets are not being mailed out – you can enter online at www.hoofit5K. eventbrite.com or download an application from the website. You can also find more information on their Facebook page at “Hoof It 5K & Fun Run.” The top male and female in each age group will receive a unique plaque. Age groups are 12 and under, 13-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, and 70 and over. In addition, there will be stick horse races for kids of all ages. “If you can’t run,” says Lyndsey, “you

can ride your stick horse.” Bring your own stick horse. The Claremore Lake Trail 5K is paved, and water will be provided at two stations on the course with refreshments provided at the finish. “I’m very excited to have a new type of club fundraiser,” Lyndsey adds. “I’m confident this event is going to be successful.” The Rogers County 4-H Horse Club has been in existence for over 40 years. The organization’s purpose is to inspire and safely educate young people, through 4-H, to forge positive personal attributes and foster a lifelong fellowship with horses. Members participate in various horse-related leadership activities, including speeches, judging contests and quiz bowl competitions. They also volunteer their time for community service projects such as trash cleanup on local county roads, and collecting donations for the community food bank and a local women’s shelter. They’ve also raised funds for St. Jude Children’s Hospital. Sponsorships are still available and are tax deductible, as the 4-H Club is a 501c3 organization.

Weather Changes Can Affect Garage Doors Call Superior Overhead Door for broken springs, insulation solutions, and a wide selection of new garage doors.

By Deanna Rebro

You’re in a hurry to leave for work. Your garage door raises a few feet and then stops. It will move no further. This scenario with a broken spring plays out most often during temperature changes. Steve Lewis, owner of Superior Overhead Door in Broken Arrow, explains how Oklahoma’s intense heat and bright sun dries out the springs and makes them brittle. When there is a shift in

temperature, weak springs are likely to pop. Who knows when this will happen to your door? That’s why it is important to have a technician from Superior Overhead Door inspect your door’s operation, as well as the opener, and have them in good working order before the brisk winds, cold rains and snow begin. Of course, if you have a problem, Superior is the com-

pany to call for quick, reliable service. All their trucks are fully stocked with parts. Their technicians are all Superior employees who have undergone a rigorous background screening before their acceptance into the extended family. In many instances, they can provide same day service. Superior also has a solution to help keep cold air from entering your garage with either factory insulated doors or an insulation kit for your existing door. Pick it up and do it yourself or have Superior professional quickly install it for you. For factory insulated replacement doors or for new construction, Superior carries the Haas line with the highest R value, a full thermal brake which limits the transfer of temperature, and polyurethane insulation that provides more than five times the insulation value of wood. They also carry a wide selection of decorative Clopay steel doors. An attractive garage door adds curb appeal and sets the tone for the rest of your house.

Keith Mrozinski crafts each custom wood door at Superior Overhead Door.

“It’s really surprising to see how much a really nice garage door can change the look of a house for so little money,” says Steve. A large inventory of doors is on hand in the warehouse. Often they can be installed the same day. Each new door goes up with special weather stripping for an added measure of protection. Those who want to replicate specific designs or create their own look can have a custom-built door. Master carpenter Keith Mrozinski crafts each door as though it were a piece of art going to his own home. “We literally have a door for every need,” says Steve. For those who like to work in their garages, an all glass, full view door lets light in without seeing in. Overhead doors can also be made to fit custom needs, like enclosing large patio spaces and outdoor living areas for year-round use. Steve is proud to be a Liftmaster certified technician in the

Agricultural Equipment and Repair P&K Equipment offers complete equipment solution packages for customers – from sales, parts, service, and beyond. By Christopher Davis

Since P&K Equipment established its Owasso location in 2009, the agricultural equipment provider has earned a reputation for top notch customer service. Through a tremendous growth period over the last several years, P&K has provided all types of equipment, parts, and service, and has established itself as a complete solutions dealer.

the way up to full-size tractors and farm implements, and golf and turf equipment. Increasingly, customers want a one-stop shop for their agricultural and landscape equipment needs and P&K is ready to provide that. Recognizing this natural cycle of customer needs is precisely the reason P&K has worked so hard to create an excellent customer service experience, so that the company can create successful, lasting customer relationships. As harvest season wraps up and winter nears, attention turns toward updating, fixing and maintaining equipment in preparation for next year. P&K offers 100+ point inspections and maintenance packages on a variety of equipment. With a reputation for Randal Bobbitt, store manager at P&K Equipment in Owasso. An authorized dealer of John Deere tractors and agricultural equipment, P&K also offers a broad selection of mowers and other lawn and garden equipment from trusted brands like Honda and Stihl. Essentially, the company specializes in equipment solutions that range from leaf blowers and lawn mowers, to chainsaws and generators, all

professional and trustworthy service, P&K is confident that customers will be pleased with their experience at P&K. “Our goal at P&K is to provide solutions with honesty, courtesy and a sense of urgency,” says Advertising Coordinator Erin Wheeler. “Our Owasso store has had tremendous success because of their excellent customer service.” In fact, the P&K team built such a stellar reputation in Owasso, the company decided to have some of its staff travel to locations in Pryor and Bartlesville to share best practices. The strategy aims to reinforce an already deepseated sense of customer care. After all, when team members show stellar results, it’s wise to empower them in such a way that their passion catches on. Randal Bobbitt, store manager, hones in on the keyword. “We empower our staff to take care of customers immediately,” he says. This subtle difference sets P&K apart from competitors as the company continues to build a reputation for strong customer service.

How many times has one had to wait while the guy behind the counter chases down a supervisor for authorization to fuss over a bolt that everyone knows needs replacing? Empowerment of team members is not just rhetoric. Management believes in its crew on the front line, and encourages them to use every tool in their toolbox and trick up their sleeve to get customers back to work in the fields and lawns, faster. Time is valuable, as is knowledge. P&K staff saves customers time by applying their knowledge towards quickly and efficiently solving whatever problem is sidelining your equipment.

RRemodel Your Outdoor Living Space S&W Tree Specialists does a lot more than tree pruning.

By Duane Blankenship

Family owned and managed S&W Tree Specialists operates throughout northeastern Oklahoma and provides services including tree care, plant health care, property maintenance, tree pruning, turf and lawn care, and emergency storm services to businesses and homeowners. Primary owners are Dale Hughes, operation supervisor; Bryan Merseburgh, lawn care/plant health care supervisor; Robby Mizumura, tree crews and plant health care supervisor; and Leilani Hughes, office manager. A certified and trained arborist and tree care safety professional is always available to provide information concerning your trees, plants or lawns. Estimates for all services are free with no obligation. Leilani says, “Area residents are really focused on making their outdoor home an enjoyable living space. It’s really like remodeling any area inside your home – only outside.” With fall just around the corner, a time when Okies enjoy spending more time outdoors with the beautiful weather fall brings, now is a great time to consider “remodeling” your backyard living

space. “We can help make it beautiful, a safe haven for your kids to play and a place in which the entire family will enjoy spending time,” said Leilani. “We haven’t had any major storms this year, and most folks in northeastern Oklahoma haven’t paid much attention to their trees,” said Bryan. “Beware – you could have dead limbs that are just waiting to be blown down and cause property damage or even personal injury. Be safe, not sorry, and get them checked.” Clearing unwanted limbs from trees is a dangerous undertaking, and Bryan cautions do-it-yourselfers to please get it done by a trained tree specialist. “S&W Tree Specialists is fully insured and fully covered, including workers comp. And you, as a customer, are covered as well,” said Leilani. All employees are screened prior to hiring and all are employed by S&W. “We don’t contract labor,” said Dale. “You want to make sure, prior to contracting with an individual or company, that they are fully insured and that you will not be held liable for any accident that might occur on the job at your home or business.”

Family owned and operated S&W Tree Specialists provides services including tree trimming, plant health care, lawn treatment and mowing. (L to R): Dale Hughes, Leilani Hughes, Bryan Merseburgh and Raymond Bearpaw.

If you are interested in scheduling lawn services for this coming spring, now is the time to do it. Don’t wait until the last minute when schedules are full. Bryan will meet you for a free estimate to perform the services you desire. Bryan reminds us that October and November is the optimum time to fertilize trees and shrubs. S&W will be in their booth

at the Tulsa State Fair from September 25 through October 5 in the MIO Building and invite you to stop by, meet the family face-to-face, and get your questions answered. S&W also specializes in the installation of Christmas lights. Again, now is the time to schedule a meeting with Bryan for a no obligation quote and to get your lights or-

dered so they can be on before Thanksgiving.

Tale Artisan Sale Don’t miss this Oklahoman-only artisan event benefitting the Friends of the Catoosa Public Library on Saturday, October 25 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

By Sheryl Sowell

Friends of the Catoosa Public Library is an organization with the mission “to strengthen our local library, to encourage our community by providing opportunities for increased knowledge, and to open doorways to the world for future generations.” The Friends accomplish this through a variety of free community events, educational and fitness classes, and donations to the library, including books and financial support. “We not only want to increase awareness of the library through fundraising, but engage our community as well,” says Becky Jones, president. “At our meetings discuss what our community needs are and how we can fill those gaps.” The Friends of the Catoosa Public Library will host their next fundraiser on

Peace of Cake Bakery, one of the 50+ booths at last year’s Whale of a Tale Artisan Sale.

Saturday, October 25, the 4th annual Whale of a Tale Artisan Sale. The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Catoosa Library & Community Center, located at 105 E. Oak St., and will feature numerous Oklahoma artisans selling

a variety of items: jewelry, quilts, hand-turned pens and clocks, Cherokee style baskets, handcrafted wares and much more. Kathryn Bolen, vice president of the Friends and event coordinator, is excited to return with her Kat’s Custom Kreations

handcrafted jewelry. All proceeds from Whale of a Tale will go towards the Friends’ efforts to increase awareness of the library and offer free services to the community. The Catoosa Masonic Lodge will be sponsoring the sale and again have committed to matching a portion of the proceeds. If you’re looking for a fun way to log some volunteer time, contact the Friends – they are in need of volunteers the day of the sale. The primary focus of the event is the exhibition of quality Oklahoma fine arts and crafts, giving attendees the opportunity to meet, interact with, and purchase from the local artisans. Whale of Tale will also feature a “make and take” craft booth for children and door prizes. Live musical entertainment will fill the air throughout the day. Vendor applications will be accepted until all spots are filled. Indoor and outdoor booths are available, and canopies may be rented for outdoor booths (all booth fees benefit the Friends’ community efforts). The Whale of Tale Artisan Sale is a juried event; artisans must submit photos of their products for selection. Application info is available online

Past classes have included craft lessons in jewelry making and Cherokee basket weaving, do-it-yourself home and beauty workshops, couponing seminars, genealogy sessions and more. W Will Rogers Days Lots of fun is happening in Claremore November 1-4 to commemorate the birth of Oklahoma’s favorite son. By Pat Reeder Something new has been added to the four-day Will Rogers Days, marking the November 4, 1879 birthday of Will Rogers and the 1938 opening of the Will Rogers Memorial Museum in Claremore. A “Mid-Afternoon Frolic” amateur talent show will be Sunday afternoon, November 2 from 2 to 4. Open to the first 20 applicants, cash prizes will be $150, first place; $100, second place; and $50, third place. Applications are available on the website at www.willrogers.com or at the Museum admissions desk. The “Frolic” is a take-off of Will’s vaudeville days when he performed in the “Midnight Frolic” variety show on the roof of New York City’s Amsterdam Theatre. Will Rogers Days, November 1-4, starts at 10 a.m. Saturday, November 1 with a parade through downtown Claremore and continues with the Indian Women’s Pocahontas Club traditional program, wreath-laying and a lunch at the Memorial Museum. Headlining the parade will be Alaska & Madi, a Tulsa duo who competed in “The Voice” as part of Team Blake, according to John Walke, Reveille Rotary Club parade chairman. Parade entry

forms are available on the Claremore Reveille Rotary website. Cash incentives are offered marching bands. Big yellow buses will be lined up Monday, November 3, when hundreds of children hop off for “Children’s Day at the Museum,” from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Schools are required to make reservations to assure available space. A magician has been added to the list of activities that includes popular Cherokee storyteller Robert Lewis, trick roping, sing-a-along, old fashioned games, coloring and refreshments. Will’s birthday on Tuesday, November 4 will be a day for a group of area school children to enjoy the ranch near Oologah, where Will was born, and to celebrate his birthday. Kowboy Kal, a champion trick roper, will entertain. Oologah-Talala students, directed by Kim Grazier, will present her original musical of the life of Will, which will also be presented during “Children’s Day.” The program starts at 10 a.m. and ends about 11:30 a.m. with birthday cake and cookies. All events are free and open to the public.

large casinos, small businesses and family homes who demand the best security, networks and electrical systems. “Technology has changed,” says Dyson. A quick glance at everyday gadgets suggests that electronics have attained a new level of efficiency and ability. With Internet and cloud-based solutions becoming standard, electronic systems are now faster, smaller and are shedding redundant components. In the security industry, the effects of technological progress are noteworthy. Two decades ago, surveillance systems relied on VHS tapes to store video footage. A decade ago, DVR was standard. Now, cloud servers are simplifying Mike Eubanks, Megan Eubanks, and Kevin Dyson, owners of DLLS Systems and the process even Tel-Star Technologies. more. That is,

digital video footage is stored on a server off site, or “up in the cloud,” as some are fond of saying. Now, as Dyson puts it, “it’s just cameras and cloud storage.” Cameras, too, have become remarkably more effective, compared to their predecessors. Not long ago, security cameras were bulky and obvious. In some cases, their effectiveness relied as much on the perception of being watched as the likelihood that anyone was actually monitoring in real time. Now, video cameras are subtle and reliably transmit footage in real time over high speed Internet. And, since administrators are able to view on computers (and even smartphones) safely off-site at any time, the would-be criminals’ perception they cannot escape the so-called “eye in the sky” is a reality. “Customers save a couple thousand dollars,” says Dyson of recent breakthroughs in technology. DLSS Systems offers turn-key security systems for remarkably reasonable rates. Currently, they offer a 2-gig security package that includes three doors, a motion sensor and control panel. “The system can handle up to 40 devices, and you can get it for around $99,” notes Dyson. Upgrading with video cameras, motion sensors-to-live monitoring and cloud storage for archives is simple. The efficient and affordable approach extends to lighting and appliance automation as well, which not only eases everyday life, but saves on energy costs and enhances security. DLSS Systems and Tel-Star Technologies provide customers with a smartphone

application that enables users to monitor and control devices while they are away. So, even when a user is on vacation for the holidays, he or she can log in and view video footage, turn on lights or even turn off the sprinklers. “We don’t want to walk into a building and see a lighting system and say, ‘Wow, who did this?’ We want to be the ones installing these systems that wow people,” says Mike Eubanks, head of TelStar Technologies. Eubanks and Dyson are longtime friends who cut their teeth at large technology companies. As technology evolved and the larger companies moved on, they both found themselves providing services for longtime clients with unique needs the former companies couldn’t meet. Recognizing a demand for customized services they specialized in, Eubanks and Dyson struck out on their own. “The trend with the larger security companies is to go out and win as many accounts as possible,” says Dyson. “We don’t view our customers as numbers; we build relationships,” he says.

Fair Board Member Seeks Commissioner Seat very proud to reach that goal, and I believe it has been key in attracting more and more Rogers County families to the fair every year.” Mr. Burrows believes his tenure on the Fair Board is an excellent example of what can be accomplished when elected officials work together to creative positive changes for Rogers County. “Our economy is healthy – I see a lot of great things on the horizon for our county,” he adds. His accomplishments on the Fair Board, as well his 30+ year work history, provides Ron with a solid foundation for success as he runs as Republican candidate for Rogers County Commissioner District 3. The position of county commissioner involves not only overseeing the construction of roads and bridges, but also inspecting and improving county programs and facilities, supervising financial affairs of the county, developing personal policies, making agreements affecting the welfare of the citizens, and much, much more. According to the Agricultural Economics Extension, “As the chief fiscal entity of the county…the Board of County Commissioners is in charge

of receiving and expending funds, and, therefore, must make major financial decisions and transactions, prepare budgets, award contracts, and act on claims.” Ron Burrows’ number one goal as District 3 Rogers County Commissioner would be maintaining fiscal responsibility. “The person elected to this position is responsible for millions of dollars in taxpayers’ money, and I want Rogers County citizens to know that their tax dollars are truly at work for them.” Ron’s extensive work history includes road construction, employee and budget management, and public service. He has managed the Claremore Expo Center for the past five years, which has seen much growth and improvement under his leadership. Ron is also highly committed to his community. In addition to the Fair Board, he is a member of numerous other local organizations including the Claremore Convention & Visitors Bureau, Claremore Reveille Rotary Club, Leadership Rogers County, and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Oklahoma. “I am able to facilitate

and be part of open, positive communication with a multitude of groups to achieve goals. I will work together with other elected officials to accomplish great things for Rogers County.” Get to the polls on November 4, 2014 to vote for Republican Ron Burrows as Rogers County Commissioner District #3.

New additions this year includes pony rides. “It’s a wonderful time for families to get out and enjoy a beautiful fall day full of fun activities,” Hazel adds. Other planned activities include face painting as well as pumpkin painting. “Since it’s the week before Halloween, we’re also sponsoring a costume contest for children, ages one through 13,” says Darryl Ward, owner. Prizes will also be awarded in the costume contest. While the Hot Mama Deli will also be open inside The Nut House, there will be a variety of food vendors on site, including a barbecue smoker selling fresh barbecue. “Although there is no barbeque competition, this

In addition, event-goers and auto enthusiasts can check out the classic cars that will be on display. “We always have a good turnout,” says Hazel. And, adds her husband, “There is no admission or parking fees.” Event sponsors include Suburban Chevrolet, T&G Power Equipment, BancFirst, Bank of Commerce and Champion Refuse, Inc. “These sponsors make it possible for us to host this event,” says Darryl. “They’ve been very supportive and we ask people to use their services if they can and have a need for them.” The Nut House is also pleased to help support the local chapter of the Blue Star Mothers, who will be at the

Connecting Children with the Loving Homes They Deserve TFI Family Connections LLC expands Oklahoma services.

By Christopher Davis

It is no secret that our state has a crisis when it comes to providing resources and safe homes for displaced children, but the numbers can be paralyzing. “There are 12,025 children in out of home care, with less than 2,000 foster homes statewide in Oklahoma,” explains Rachelle Roosevelt, executive director of TFI Family Connections LLC. In Tulsa County alone, only 235 foster homes are certified, while more than 1,800 children are in need of placement. Surrounding communities’ statistics are hardly more optimistic. “A large number of children in OKDHS custody are placed in shelter care, even as young as 5 and 6 years of age,” Roosevelt explains. “These children should have a safe family home to live in.” TFI Family Connections LLC is a private not-for-profit organization providing services and support for foster children and families across Oklahoma. In partnership with OKDHS and other related departments,

Shenelle Flowers and Michele Rosdahl of TFI Family Connections.

the organization is expanding its reach while maintaining a deep commitment to quality care. Roosevelt and the staff at TFI are digging in and leading the way in the ongoing struggle to recruit families willing to place children in positive, loving homes. Currently serving about 100 children and 68 certified families, the organization is also working with another

100 families in the process of getting certified in the state. Such anticipated expansion may sound like a lot, but there is still a great need for more foster families in Oklahoma. Roosevelt says the need for homes extends to any age, from 0 to 21. She adds, “While 76 percent of children in care are under the age of 10, the hardest to find placement for are teenagers.”

Potential foster parents must go through a process that includes assessments, background check and 27 hours of training. Along the way, a worker will meet with new foster parents to develop a home study, which will provide the basis for matching a child with your household. After the home study, the process is mainly paperwork. Once contracts are signed, DHS reviews and approves the contracts, after which children are able to be placed in your home. However, it all begins with completing an initial application. Those interested in supporting TFI, but are unable to provide a home environment, are encouraged to consider donating time or resources to the endeavor. Volunteers are always welcome, as are donations. Support for sports, art classes, and musical instruments is especially helpful. School supplies and hygiene items, too, go a long way toward the effort to help children in foster care. For babies and young children, diapers and pull-ups, formula and baby

food is all greatly appreciated. As the holiday season comes into view, consider donating Christmas gifts. With state and federal budgets always in danger of cuts, resources for recruitment efforts are elusive, which is why TFI Family Connections hopes our community steps in to spread the word and get involved. If you or someone you know might be interested in sharing a home, please contact the organization. Rachelle Roosevelt and the TFI staff provide a wealth of information about the application process and are ready to help guide potential foster parents and volunteers to the most effective path to supporting displaced children.

(Plymouth, Jeep, etc.). Today, the Mopar name is a catch-all phrase car enthusiasts use for the related family of cars – in contrast to Chevrolet, Ford and so on. One hundred years after the first Dodge Model 30 took its first test spin, the company retains its popularity as a leading American car manufacturer, as evidenced by families of die-hard enthusiasts like the Fowlers. The Mopars in the Park Car Show is a way for everyone to get together and show off their favorite ride, burn a little rubber and ogle the friendly competition. As in previous years, expect a slew of races and car shows. Drag races will feature several classes, including a ladies bracket, with cash prizes awarded to winners and runners-up. The Mopar Car Show will hand out awards for almost a dozen classes, from daily drivers to trucks and convertibles – and, of course, modified models. New this year is an art show. Artists are invited to showcase their “Dodge-inspired” art. Assemblage, painting – anything goes. So snatch up those old

hubcaps from the Dart sitting out back and get to welding! For kids and the young at heart, there will be a model car contest. Winners in several categories are eligible for awards. Also, kids will be able to participate in a Hot Wheels Shoot Out. Keep an eye out for additional activities for children, as more will be added as the event draws near. Mopars at the Park has been a longtime partner of Broken Arrow Neighbors, a nonprofit organization that provides “assistance with dignity” to more than 11,000 people in the community. Specializing in helping financially disadvantaged citizens with basic needs emergency assistance, the organization has meant the difference between maintaining independence or homelessness to countless people over the years. Mopars at the Park accepts nonperishable food and cash donations at the admission gate on behalf of Broken Arrow Neighbors. Each person who brings a food donation will receive a discount on their admission at the gate. “It’s a great time for a food drive, since it’s just before the holidays,” says Fowler.
