Republican Carl Parson is owner and founder of Inola Portable Buildings & Pole Barns and has announced his candidacy for District 8 Oklahoma State Representative. Founded in 1999, Inola Portable Buildings is a staple in the Inola community. Carl grew up knowing the value of hard work and the meaning of building a life from the ground up. When Carl was only four years old, his father was killed in a car accident, leaving his wife and children behind. Times were tough and the family had difficulty making ends meet. “During those years, my mother taught me the valuable lesson that the way out of poverty was to work your way out,” said Carl. And this he did. At age 11, Carl got his first job delivering newspapers in a rough Oklahoma City neighborhood. He walked 34 blocks each day delivering the route and returning home. “I (continued on page 28)

The Tim and Patty Rich family own five McDonald’s locations, three in Owasso, one in Claremore and one in Mannford. Son Chris Rich manages the newly remodeled store just south of Claremore on Historic Route 66. Tim Rich began working for McDonald’s when he was 16 years old and has been with the organization for 49 years. Patty has been with the company for 40 years, while Chris says he literally grew up at McDonald’s. Tim’s original McDonald’s location was in Tulsa. Interesting fact: McDonald’s now has more than 14,000 restaurants in the United States. “The Claremore store had become dated and needed a facelift,” said Chris. The drive-thru service lane was never closed during remodeling, but the entire inside has been gutted, redesigned and updated with a color palette of red, blue and purple that is inviting and vibrant. There are two video tables for children and adults to play video (continued on page 28)

Riding the Bucking Bull 5 Steps to Overcoming Fear About The Market BY MELANIE HASTYGRANT

Well folks, I can surely say…This ain’t our first rodeo when it comes to the ups and downs of the stock market. It seems we have quite the perfect storm brewing here in Oklahoma. Between oil prices plunging, the stock market in correction, high Oklahoma jobless claims, and the extreme negativity of this election cycle, it has created a tornado of panic and fear. It feels as though folks are holding on for dear life. While fear is an understandable emotion, if you act irrationally during periods of stress, you will likely regret it. The current volatility is uncomfortable, but it is not unusual or unexpected. It is important to remain rational and disciplined. While we can’t control what happens in Washington, Wall Street, or Main Street, we can control how we prepare for and respond to the resulting gyrations. Thoughtful development of your goals, sound financial planning, disciplined investment management, and asking for professional help are

things you can control. The following are five steps to overcoming fear about the market: • Develop a clear goal about the money that you have invested. This should include what you will use the money for and when you will need it. If it is for retirement, look at how much income you may have coming from Social Security or other sources and solve for the difference. • Determine how much risk you are comfortable with. If you are unsure, Google “investment risk quiz” and see how you score. Most people think that they are fine with risk until the market declines and then suddenly they are not. • Establish an investment plan. Research at least 10 dif-

Spring Organizing Made Easy Derksen Portable Buildings offers a simple, affordable solution to clear your cluttered garage or home.

By Jim Butcher Spring brings gardening, cleanup and organizing. Do you have easy access to your gardening tools? Perhaps you vowed last year to finally get the garage organized, or you want to get relief from a cluttered home? Consider a portable building from the Armbristers in Claremore. Since 2007, Lewis and Patricia Armbrister have been selling quality-constructed portable buildings by Derksen. “Our portable buildings are specially built by Derksen at the Kellyville factory,” says Patricia. The price is about $200 less, and they are built from surplus materials. While Derksen buildings can be purchased or leased-to-own, Patricia explains that she offers good discounts on buildings that have been repossessed. “Regardless of your need, Derksen can provide you a building, new or used,” she said. “After you make the decision to get a portable building, check out our large inventory.” Pressure-treated materials, reinforced doors, sturdy tresses and other options available on Derksen buildings are just a few

of the reasons the Armbristers decided to sell the products, which are made the old-fashioned way in the Mennonite Craftsmanship tradition. Derksen’s portable buildings, sheds, garages and cabins also include an industry-leading warranty on treated Wood Strand Technology siding, which resists fungal rot and decay, termites, splitting, cracking and warping in a rich cedar grain texture. “Also, our buildings include 2” x 4” wall studs doubled under siding seams, 2” x 6” treated floor joists into notched 4” x 6” treated skids, and 2’ x 4’ reinforced doors designed to seal out rain and key-locked for protection. Sizes range from 8’ x 12’ to 16’ x 40’ and customers can choose from different styles of barns, cabins, cottages, utility sheds and garages with options like lofts, windows, doors and gable roofs.” Choices also include a basic electric package, wall and ceiling insulation, inside paneling and pre-finished flooring. “Customers can now opt to have their building painted or pressure-treated

and the price is the same,” adds Patricia. Shingled roofs come with a 30-year warranty, while the 29-gauge standard metal roofs come with a 40-year warranty. The company also offers a five-year craftsmanship warranty. Another option for the customer is a built-on-site Patricia and Lewis Armbrister, owners of Derksen Portable Buildings. building. “With a building built on your site, some of these options like the “To fit your budget, we can basic electric package are not avail- discuss your building needs and able,” she says. the best options for you,” says With Derksen’s buy-or-lease Patricia. “We can discuss metal For more information, contact program and no credit check, buildings, which can be less exDerksen Portable customers can save money when pensive from Derksen with the compared to renting at a storage same quality workmanship.” The Buildings facility long-term. “Buying or leas- Armbristers have two additional 1401 S. Thrift Harbor Celebrates 5 Years and New Location

A new Thrift Harbor location is now open in Bartlesville. By Sheryl Sowell The team at Thrift Harbor in Claremore is excited to celebrate their five year anniversary this month. Since opening in downtown Claremore on March 14, 2011, the non-profit resale store and its vision have continued to grow. Thrift Harbor offers the community quality merchandise at an economical price while supporting the ministries of Hope Harbor Children’s Home & Family Ministries. In conjunction with the anniversary milestone, Thrift Harbor is proud to announce the opening of its second store, located in Bartlesville at 208 E. 2nd St. “We have been blessed to receive enough donations to open a second location and help the community of Bartlesville by providing quality, low-cost clothing and goods to local families, while supporting the mission of Hope Harbor,” says Kim Prock, manager of Thrift Harbor. “Our goal is to be an inspiration to the community by helping families with their budgets and supporting our youth.” The focus of Hope Harbor is on the lives of children and the needs of families facing pain, loss and desperation. The organization

provides on-site services for atrisk teens through its Children’s Home and Academy, as well as off-site Christian counseling and parent training services. According to Titus Robison, executive director of Hope Harbor, “We now have over 100 blue donation bins out all over northeastern Oklahoma, in Arkansas and the southern part of Kansas.” With a high volume of donations to the store as well as the bins, Thrift Harbor is able to get more people involved in their mission, “especially those who can’t come here to volunteer, and it helps get the word out in other parts of Oklahoma about our mission – the knowledge of who we are,” he says. “We have a great group of volunteers, and we are always looking for more helping hands.” At both Thrift Harbor locations, shoppers will find a variety of clothing, shoes, handbags and other accessories, as well as a vast assortment of books, games, home décor, furniture and lots of knick knacks and collectibles, reasonably priced from $0.25 to $15. Thrift Harbor’s everyday low prices of $1.50 for quality adult and children’s clothing draws people in the door to shop for their families.

Shoes start at $2 per pair. Seasonal items are always available, as the store strives to keep on display those items and clothing that people need at just the right time. Currently, you’ll find displays of items for St. Patrick’s Day and Easter. The stores have large selections of spring and summer clothing and swimsuits, as well as prom dresses. New clothes are put out daily. All donated merchandise is sorted through by volunteers who keep the good stuff. Broken, tattered and unsafe items are tossed. “We don’t sell anything that would be unsafe – meaning electronics and appliances,” Prock adds. “The clothing is inspected for quality, with no major rips or stains.” To make a clothing donation or to donate other items, you can drop them off at the store, or at any of their blue donation bins located around the state. For pickup of larger items, call (918) 855-1389. “Our vision is to continue to grow and offer more for an affordable price,” says Prock. “We want to hear from our customers. If there is something they need and we can be a resource for our community, we would like

Kim Prock, store manager of Thrift Harbor. to know. We still offer the best prices for resale in town.” Thrift Harbor will be a participant in Claremore’s “Green Buck on Main Street” taking place this month. Customers are invited to shop select downtown merchants March 1-16 and enter to win a Pot of Gold Giveaway. The drawing will be held at the annual Bangers and Mash lunch event on March 17th at the Daily Progress parking lot.

Sell Your Kids’ Outgrown Items The Just Between Friends Owasso sale will be April 13-16 at Friendship Baptist Church. The Broken Arrow sale will be April 1-3 at Rhema Ninowski Recreation Center.

By Sheryl Sowell You’ve probably seen the billboards and heard their commercials on the radio, but you may not know what the Just Between Friends sale is all about. Is it a buying club? Do you have to be a member? Where does the merchandise come from? Amber Post, who owns the Owasso, Broken Arrow, Jenks/Glenpool, and Lee’s Summit, Missouri franchises, is happy to explain. In 1997, a group of friends got together in Tulsa and formed Just Between Friends. These young mothers wanted to dress their children well and save money while offering their outgrown items for sale to others. The concept started in a living room, where they gathered to “shop” from each other’s surplus items. It quickly grew into the nationally franchised business it is today. The sales offer high-quality, gently-worn items for children and expectant mothers, and take place in large facilities around the country twice a year. The Owasso JBF Sale will be held April 13-16 at Friendship Baptist Church, located at 86th Street North and

145th East Avenue in Owasso. The Just Between Friends Broken Arrow sale will be held April 1-3 at Rhema Ninowski Recreation Center (on 71st Street just east of Aspen). Since the sales are next month, that gives families plenty of time to gather the extra clothes, toys and other items in their home and become consignors. A consignor is simply a mom (or dad) like you! If you can look around your house and see toys, clothes and equipment with lots of life left in them, it’s time to get involved with JBF and turn those outgrown items into money for your family. Visit www.owasso.jbfsale. com or www.ba.jbfsale.com for all the details on how to get signed up and tag those items. You set the price and earn 60 percent of the selling price (70 to 80 percent if you consign and volunteer). “No time to tag? We can do it for you – it’s called VIP tagging,” adds Amber. Checks are mailed to consignors a week after the sale, and volunteers receive their checks the day after the sale closes. JBF accepts clothing for infants up to size 14; shoes size

0 to 8; accessories such as hats, belts, hair bows, socks, gloves and mittens; maternity and new mommy gear; sports and outdoor equipment; toys; electronics such as gaming systems and computer games; crafts including art easels, jewelry-making kits and paint by numbers; books and board games; baby equipment such as car seats, strollers, bouncy seats and swings; furniture; nursery and children’s room décor and bedding; and other miscellaneous children’s items including diapers, kids’ towels, and sippy cups. JBF is the perfect opportunity to sell items you Amber Post, franchise owner of Just Between Friends in no longer need, and shop for Owasso, Jenks/Glenpool, Broken Arrow, and Lee’s Summit. clothes and kids’ items you will need for the future. “Those who volunteer get to shop first before organized into categories. They Have the Dirt Soil Smart Partners provide quality soils for individuals and landscaping companies, as well as a drop-off location for leaf and grass disposal.

By Duane Blankenship

Many people know Don Hansen and his Thunderbird Berry Farm, located east of Broken Arrow on Hansen Road (321st East Avenue), just south of 71st Street (Kenosha). Don has recently announced the formation of a new business, Soil Smart Partners, for which Hansen will serve as mentor. Soil Smart Partners is a startup company designed to provide individuals and landscaping companies with a source of quality materials as well as a place to dispose of leaves and grass clippings. Hansen explained that there will be two divisions of Soil Smart: a materials division that will serve contractors with fill dirt and topsoil, and a compost division to serve landscape specialists and gardeners. “In short,” said Hansen, “we have the dirt.” Owners of Soil Smart Partners include Wes and Kristen Hedges, Michael Don Hansen serves as mentor for Soil Smart Partners, a startup Hansen, and Eric and company offering specialty soils for individuals and contractors. Kristin Hansen and are Don’s

grandchildren. The partners represent all the local schools (OSU, OU, TU and ORU) and have a wide spectrum of degrees from plant and soil sciences, engineering, microbiology and nursing, but they all want to minimize green landfill and make the world a little better than they found it. Soil Smart can customize each order to meet specific needs after NPK (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium) testing your soil to determine its content. According to Don, “You wouldn’t want to use the same compost on your azaleas as you do on your tomatoes.” In addition to their standard compost blends, Soil Smart is able to enrich your material with pine bark, cotton burrs, pecan shells, vegetable compost, cow manure, gypsum, limestone and sulfur. They can blend topsoil from the Verdigris River Valley with Arkansas River sand for the perfect sandy loam. “We need your leaves. We are set up to accept leaves and grass clippings free of charge,

and we can take limbs and branches in a separate area,” said Don. Drive to Soil Smart Partners in Broken Arrow by heading east of town on 71st Street (Kenosha) to 353rd E. Avenue (Lone Star Road). Turn north to the Soil Smart distribution area. Don invites you to put their quality product to the test by planting part of your garden with a customized product from Soil Smart and the balance without their custom formulated soil. “There’s going to be a marked difference between the plants grown in each area,” says Don, “because we have the dirt!”

By Sheryl Sowell Have you ever gone into a salon and felt intimidated or unwelcome? Perhaps the staff ignored you while you stood several minutes waiting for acknowledgement. Then once you sat in the chair, you felt uncomfortable because the stylist simply wasn’t friendly or helpful. Fortunately, there is a salon in Claremore where this is guaranteed to never happen – and that place is Carol’s Place. According to owner and stylist Carol Graham, “Our focus from the beginning has been to provide high quality, professional services and to help the whole family feel welcome and at ease in a relaxing, fun, positive environment. Every person who walks through the door is greeted warmly and made to feel right at home.” Carol opened the salon on December 30, 2014 along with Dani Freeman, manager and nail technician. The two had worked together for 15 years when they decided it was time to branch out and make their vision of a comfortable, family-friendly salon become a reality. Stylist Terrin Zebert rounds out the salon’s team. Carol and Dani are long-time friends of Terrin’s mother, and they have known the young lady since she was five years old. Terrin

The warm atmosphere of the salon is apparent through the women’s close relationships. “We work together every day, and we’re also best friends,” says Dani. Carol adds, “Dani is literally my right hand woman. We love our jobs, and we love working together. And Terrin is a bright ray of sunshine to the salon. She makes us laugh every single day.” Carol’s Place focuses on the whole family, providing services for all ages – men, women and children. “A lot of our clients are families. We have many men and children clients. It is not for ladies only,” says Carol. The full range of services includes hair cuts and color, formal styles and up-dos, facial waxing, Keratin smoothing treatments, Hothead hair extensions, and makeup application. Dani offers manicures, pedicures, Shellac and Backscratcher silk nail extensions. One of her personal touches is hand filing her clients’ nails, rather than using a dremel. The stylists continually expand their knowledge on current hair techniques and trends, and Carol recently attended a conference in Orlando, Florida that featured guest speaker Tabatha Coffey

Vibrant hair colors are also big right now – a lot of clients are adding a splash of red or purple,” she says. Springtime also means prom and wedding season, and the ladies at Carol’s Place will ensure that you look your absolute best for the upcoming special occasions on your calendar. The salon recently began offering Mirabella makeup for purchase. Mirabella’s mineral products include foundation, blush, eye shadows, lipstick and more, and all are paraben-, gluten- and talc-free. County Grannies PlayHouse Welcomes All

Carolyn Dormier’s mission is to provide a place for the community to gather and create craft items, hold parties and events, and shop and consign resale items. By Sheryl Sowell

At Country Grannies PlayHouse in Inola, rescued and handcrafted items are the specialty. Owner Carolyn Dormier loves to bring life back to nostalgic pieces she has collected along the way, as well as create new items using the crafting supplies found in her store. “My vision is to make this a place for everyone in the community to feel welcome to come in for crafting, events, fellowship, friendship, shopping and consigning,” said Carolyn. The store moved from its previous location on Commercial Street after Carolyn found the perfect little house on Broadway that she could transform into her resale and collectible item paradise. For the past two years, Carolyn and her husband have been cleaning and remodeling the house

room by room to expand on their vision, including new floors, paint and more. They recently put the finishing touches on the kitchen and added a washer and dryer for public use. A party room is available for small gatherings, birthday parties and meetings. “I would love to see people bring their friends in for crafting parties, as well as use the space for birthday parties or family reunions,” said Carolyn. “We really just want it to serve the community’s need for a meeting space for whatever they may have going on.” Customers will find lots of rescued thrift store type items as they browse through the rooms of Country Grannies PlayHouse. A staple in the store, and one of the things it is best known for, are the hand-crafted sock monkeys available for purchase. They

can be fashioned from socks of all sizes and patterns and make great gifts. For specialty monkeys, such as sports teams, a two-week notice is requested to give time to order the socks. “I really enjoy teaching others to make the sock monkeys as well,” said Carolyn. “Individuals or groups are welcome to stop by any time for a lesson in how to put one together. The instruction is free and the material cost is minimal.” Fabrics and yarns are available for purchase in the store for only 25 cents an ounce or yard. Carolyn also offers doll clothes, quilts, crocheted items and handmade reusable shopping bags. Charity work is important to the mission of Country Grannies PlayHouse. Carolyn knits and crochets hats for cancer patients, and donates items to nursing homes and

NNever Let Your Fear Decide Your Future Waterstone Private Wealth Management helps clients create confidence in their dreams for their future.

By Melanie Hasty-Grant With the markets making a turn for the worst since January, the smell of fear is in the air. Not only is it in “the air,” you can sense it in the hearts of investors. F-EA-R has two meanings. Forget everything and run, or face everything and rise. The choice is yours. I hope you decide to face your fear and rise. So what does facing the fears of the market mean, exactly? A lot of folks have been rocking along over the last couple of years, maybe making little headway here or there but knowing deep down they don’t really have an investment or retirement “plan” in place. It’s something people find easy to put off. Some may have visited an investment person one time, who put them in some investments but have not received any further advice or service. Some may have left their 401(k)’s at old company plans or moved them to an online “do-it-yourself” outfit in an attempt to save money. At any rate, when triple digit losses start occurring, the fear sets in. However, then the excuse becomes that they “don’t want to move anything right now because the market is down.” Folks become literally paralyzed by their fear. So…the following is what I mean by facing your fears of the

market. 1) The “market” could care less what you paid when you purchased something. Therefore, if you really don’t have a sell-side strategy, meaning a pre-planned decision about when and why you or your advisor would sell a specific investment, then you really don’t have an investment plan. You should get one! Riding this market up and down and hoping for the best is not a plan. 2) If you do have an investment plan, stick with it! If you already have a well thought out plan about when you would sell or buy specific investments (or have someone who knows what they are doing, who does) then by all means don’t try to change things mid-stream, stick with the one who brought ya! 3) Be actively involved in your plan for your future. Too many times we develop an investment and retirement plan for someone and after a period of time they become apathetic or passive. By this I mean they stop coming to their portfolio review meetings, stop trying to reduce their debt, stop making their contributions to meet their goals. They stop working the plan that they committed themselves to. While we realize that the day-to-day tyranny of investing and plugging away at a future goal isn’t always

necessarily sexy, it is necessary to reach your destination. Don’t get distracted. Don’t let the day to day ups and downs sway you from

what you want for your life in the long term. Finally, remember that while the current market situation

may be uncomfortable, it is not unexpected or unusual. Be opportunistic at times like this. As with most all circumstances in life, it is really not about what is going on in the market, it is about the decisions your make about what to do about it. Fear can be a catalyst for change. Embrace what it is telling you. You are in control of your choices. If you need help evaluating your investments or developing a plan, give us a call. We can help. That means someone you know, someone you care about, has been or may become the victim of sexual violence. It may be your mother, your sister, your friend, your girlfriend, your wife, your coworker, or your daughter.” All proceeds will directly benefit Safenet Services’ clients. continued from page 1 would have been scared walking that neighborhood,” said Carl, “if not for Midnight, my black lab, and a Cocker Spaniel that joined us every day. With my guardian dogs, I was never afraid.” From its inception, Carl has run his small business completely debt free. “I believe there are three foundations necessary for a community to thrive: Biblical principles, a strong education system and individual freedoms,” said Carl. “I know the value of a paycheck and believe in using taxpayer money to build our great state, not tear down freedoms.” Carl said the Oklahoma Constitution is built upon the phrase “Invoking the guidance of Almighty God” and that we must reinforce our moral foundation by protecting life, legislating morally, and electing leaders who automatically vote for God. Carl supports the State’s authority and right to determine Oklahoma’s direction. He is a believer and supporter of the 2nd and 10th Amendments. When he was 19, Carl’s life took a serious turn. Carl relates, “An older preacher took an interest in me while we were working at a freight dock in Oklahoma City. The elderly gentleman invited me to join him for dinner one evening at Lea’s Skyline Restaurant. As we waited for our food, the jukebox got hung up on “Amazing Grace” sung by Judy Collins. After listening to it a couple of times, I felt compelled to do some-

thing I had never done before; I asked the preacher if I could pray.” As the evening progressed, Carl knew what he would do. That night, Carl gave his life to Jesus Christ. “Living my life involves my faith,” said Carl. “Whatever I do, I’m compelled to do it the right way.” Through years of building his business, Carl has also built his character. “I’ve learned that true wealth doesn’t come from the government. True prosperity comes from always doing the right thing and being a good steward with what the Lord gives you.” Carl and his wife Linda have been married 37 years, building strong foundations for their three children and five grandchildren. These are the structural values of family, faith and freedom that Carl intends to protect as State Representative for Oklahoma House District 8.

With all the design improvements, bright new floors, walls, electronic menu boards, service counters, restrooms and more, the Claremore McDonald’s is unique and exceptional. “The new digital menu board is totally modern with state-of-the-art technology,” said Chris. “It displays special offers with crystal-clear graphics, and we can play videos and commercials to promote new products on the five electronic screens.” One screen will feature rotating McDonald’s commercials. Power is also available at designated tables with available WiFi for computer operation. “All the old is gone and has been replaced by the new,” said Chris. The front counter is dual functioning with designated order and pick up areas. One wall sports a graphic of a classic McDonald’s store, and there is new LED lighting throughout the store, combining with the other improvements to make it a relaxing and fun atmosphere. “Because

we’re located on Historic Route 66,” said Chris, “we get patrons pulling in from nearly every state and many who are visiting from abroad. Everyone seems to have an interest in Route 66 and want to travel portions of it whenever they visit our state.” Chris is sure McDonald’s patrons are going to be pleased with the new look and improvements in the dining area. “Load up your family, come in and check us out while you enjoy your favorite McDonald’s meal.” He adds that they are interviewing and hiring for the new Claremore location.

DDon’t Be Alarmed, Be Aware Mother Nature’s Pest Control addresses potential insect-related issues not to be ignored: Zika virus, termites, bedbugs, and fleas and ticks.

By Duane Blankenship common symptoms are fever, rash, joint pain and conjunctivitis (red eyes). Justin Buckmaster and Sheila Disler of Mother Nature’s Pest Control & Lawn Care say there is no need for panic or alarm, but in concern for public health, we should be doing all we

can to keep mosquito populations at a minimum. Warmer weather is just around the corner, and winning battles against insects is Mother Nature’s expertise. Treatments are administered in and around our homes, gardens, shrubs and lawns, therefore diminishing the inherent numbers of mosquitoes, fleas, ticks, bedbugs and termites. The range and abundance of the Lone Star Tick have increased over the past 20 to 30 years, and they now reside in Oklahoma and Texas. According to Justin, Mother Nature’s Pest Control & Lawn Care department managers include: Brent “All three Pressnall, pests; Tom Sevitts, lawn; David Grady, human resources; and (not pictured) life stages – Andrea Monks, office manager. Sheila Disler is communications larva, director, and Justin Buckmaster is marketing director for Mother Nature’s. nymph and

Most of us are becoming aware of the Zika virus disease, heretofore confined to Central and South America. The first case of Zika in the United States was recently reported from Dallas, Texas. The virus is spread to people through mosquito bites, and the most

RRun to the Well Kibo Group International will host the second annual 5K and Fun Run, dedicated to bringing clean water to Uganda, on April 9, 2016.

By Julie Alexander Most of us give little thought to where our water comes from when we turn on a faucet, but in countries like Uganda, potable water is at a premium. When a group of missionaries from Searcy, Arkansas visited the country in 1994, they quickly discovered how important water is to communities and to their own mission. Greg Taylor, a minister at The Journey Church in Tulsa, was a member of the mission group that went in 1994. He said their initial work was to spread their religious message to the residents they met.

But after several years, they realized how big of a problem unsanitary water was for the community and the message they brought. And the mission grew into something that saved lives in more ways than one. “Our mission immerses, so when we baptized some people in polluted water sources, it convicted us that we need to also address the physical needs of clean drinking water for people, as well as addressing spiritual needs.” That trip more than 20 years ago led to the creation of Kibo Group International, which is

(L to R): Greg Taylor, minister, The Journey Church; Teresa McIlroy, owner, VIM 360; Ben West, communication coordinator, Kibo Group International; and Mary-Margaret Watson, runner and Kibo supporter.

dedicated to bringing clean water to Uganda through the construction and maintenance of water wells. The Kibo Group’s mission goes well beyond just clean water. They see clean water as the key to creating flourishing, healthy communities. Kibo provides funding for well projects, and teaches the locals how to build and maintain the wells, giving residents independence, stability and better health. Ben West, Kibo Group’s communication coordinator, said they fund four to five new wells each year at a cost of ten to fifteen thousand dollars per well. Kibo also helps to repair 15 to 20 wells per year. Training local residents how to maintain the wells is also important. “Repairing a well is sometimes a couple of hundred dollars up to a few thousand,” he said, adding that not all the funding comes directly from Kibo. “The communities help pay for the repairs. They might raise a thousand dollars to help pay for the repair. “ Most of Kibo’s funding is from individual donors from across the United States. But the group is gearing up for their two biggest fundraisers on April 9: the Run to the Well, a 5K and Fun Run, and The Kibo Group Partnership Dinner. Run to the Well was the

adult – will feed on humans and may be aggressive. They also feast on dogs and cats and are often brought into our homes.” With our mild winter, Mother Nature’s major focus is now on disease-carrying insects. Shelia indicated that common pests are most active mid- to late-summer and mild winters generally indicate that we’ll see pests earlier, longer and in greater numbers. “This includes fleas, ticks, mosquitoes, bedbugs and termites,” she added. With spring break approaching and students on the move, Shelia reminds us of these tips to help reduce the risk of bedbugs in your home: Don’t put luggage on hotel or motel beds. Inspect rooms prior to moving in. The safest place for luggage is the bathtub; bedbugs hate porcelain and tile. When you return home, leave the luggage in the garage. Put clothes from luggage into the dryer and run a cycle on high setting. (Temperatures over 115 degrees will kill bedbugs.) After the dry cycle, wash clothes and do another dry cycle. Bedbugs love clutter; remove it. Don’t open packages you receive inside your home. The number one carrier of bedbugs is secondhand furniture. Contact Mother Nature’s for a treatment of FROSTBITE before

brainchild of Mary-Margaret Watson, an avid runner and Kibo supporter. “Uganda is near and dear to my heart,” she said. “Even though our feet are planted in Tulsa, we can make a difference around the world.” Watson said she was told by other 5K organizers that they should be happy if they break even the first year, but Run to the Well raised approximately $14,000 in 2015, and Watson’s goal is to raise $25,000 this year. They are expecting 400 participants this year. Teresa McIlroy, owner of VIM 360, formerly Strength of Mind & Body, is a race sponsor for the second year and will be having training sessions leading up to the event. She learned about Kibo from Taylor. She and her husband, Jeff, have visited Uganda twice and witnessed first-hand the difference Kibo’s work has made. “We were impressed with the way Kibo hires and empowers Ugandans to do the mission work,” she said. “Who better to serve Ugandans than Ugandans who know first hand the culture and needs?” McIlroy is also forming a team to participate in the run and encourages people to join her team or form their own. Sponsorships are available and range in price from $500 to $2,500. The course is USATF certified and runners are chipped and timed. The 5K and the Fun Run are open to all ages and ability levels. Participants will also find an interactive Ugandan village with a working well at the finish line. The Fun Run starts at 8 a.m. and the 5K at 8:30 at the River Walk Crossing in Jenks. bringing furniture into home. “We predict a healthy swarm of termites this year,” said Shelia. “Colonies get overcrowded and send out swarms that include future queens and kings to ferret out places to form new colonies. Sentricon HD (High Density) Bait System is our best defense against termites.” Mother Nature’s also offers a full-service mosquito elimination plan where technicians check potential mosquito habitats around your home – gutters, French drains, pools, toys, shrubs, trees and lawn. You will be advised of a recommended treatment plan and its cost. Don’t panic. Be calm. Myers Thinks Outside the Pizza Box Mazzio’s names industry veteran Stuart Myers as its new vice president of marketing.

By Kristy White Tulsa-based Mazzio’s LLC, the owner and operator of Mazzio’s Italian Eatery and Oliveto Italian Bistro, has named Stuart Myers, an experienced restaurant industry veteran, as its new vice president of marketing. Myers has more than 25 years of experience in national restaurant marketing, including field/local store marketing, promotions, brand and product development. As vice president he will oversee the company’s daily marketing, advertising and PR efforts in both the corporate and franchise-owned locations. “We are thrilled that Stuart is joining us to lead our marketing team,” said Sheri Miksa, president and CEO of Mazzio’s. “As a career marketing executive, he has led marketing teams for a number of franchised restaurant chains, including major pizza brands. He brings fresh perspective, extensive industry experience and best-inclass marketing skills to help us continue to build our sales and grow our brands into the future.”

For the past 10 years, Myers owned and operated United Marketing Communications, an award-winning marketing and media agency in the Dallas area specializing in the pizza industry. His company received numerous awards, including Pizza Hut Agency of the Year in 2008 as well as being named Papa Murphy’s agency for new store openings in 2013. But one of the greatest strengths Myers brings to the Tulsa company, according to Mazzio’s, is his ability to think “outside the pizza box.” His wealth of knowledge has led him to increase sales and profits not only for pizza franchises like Domino’s Pizza, Pizza Hut, Papa Murphy’s Take ‘N’ Bake Pizza but also for leading regional and national restaurant franchisors/ brands that include Church’s Chicken, Dairy Queen, KFC, Long John Silver’s and Freddy’s Frozen Custard. “I’m very excited to be a part of the Mazzio’s team,” said Myers. “I’m eager to get settled in, involved with the community and become more familiar with

everything the Tulsa area has to offer.” Myers knows how important it is to be active in the community, and he has also taken that belief to the next level with his leadership in national industry organizations. He served as vice president of marketing for the International Pizza Hut Franchise Holder’s Association, as well as working with franchisees representing more than 4,200 domestic Pizza Hut locations in the development of system marketing initiatives, regional and local media programs, and sales-building initiatives. A Heart for Your Eyes Dr. Len Hart has treated families in Collinsville for 34 years at Primary Eye Care. By Sheryl Sowell Think you don’t need to see an eye doctor because your vision is perfectly fine? Think again. Eye exams aren’t only for people with poor vision. They’re an important way of detecting eye problems before you have symptoms. Eye doctors can also catch other health problems early – an eye exam can detect diabetes, high blood pressure, glaucoma and macular degeneration, among numerous

other health conditions. If it’s been a few years since your last appointment, or if you’ve never had one, it’s time to schedule a visit to Primary Eye Care. Dr. Len Hart cares about his patients’ vision and their health. He has owned and operated Primary Eye Care in Collinsville for 34 years, maintaining many of his patients for decades. Since opening his practice, he has been

in the same location at 1103 W. Center St., across the street from the post office. He is Collinsville’s “hometown eye doctor.” Office manager Shelley Hayes says his patients are often pleasantly surprised by how much Dr. Hart actually cares about them. “He gets to know his patients and genuinely cares about their vision, their eyes, and most importantly, their health. I have brought my whole family in for eye exams, including my dad when he was having health problems related to his eyes. I don’t have to trust and like Dr. Hart simply because he’s my employer, but I absolutely do trust and like him. He’s The staff of Primary Eye Care (L to R): Erica Smith, Hannah Lechtenberg, a wonderful Dr. Len Hart, Shelley Hayes, Natalie Roberts and Tiffani Glen.

eye doctor and a great person.” Primary Eye Care offers a full range of optometric services, including a full dispensary, extensive and thorough eye exams, and a huge variety of contact lenses and frame options. Frame lines range from bargain friendly to high end and include Michael Kors, Ray Ban, Vera Bradley, Harley Davidson, Kenneth Cole, Converse, Fat Heads, and Wiley X. The practice maintains the most up-to-date technology, and Dr. Hart and his staff continually further their education through training, seminars and obtaining new certifications. Dr. Hart also works closely with ophthalmologists when patients need referrals for cataract, Lasik and other surgeries. All pre- and post- operative appointments are performed by Dr. Hart. Primary Eye Care is a friendly, positive, family atmosphere where the staff is always smiling and laughing. Dr. Hart encourages all ages, from young children on up, to visit him for an annual eye exam. “Vision is something we take for granted until we no longer have it. So many people put off or ignore eye care, but it is so important to take care of your eyes. They are the windows through your body, and eye exams can save your life by detecting a number of serious health problems.” Dr. Hart is Oklahoma born and bred and was raised in Woodward. He attended Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford and then the

Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tennessee, where he obtained his Doctorate of Optometry degree in 1980. While at SCO, Dr. Hart made humanitarian eye care trips to Costa Rica and Haiti. He holds licenses in Oklahoma and Texas, and is one of the first optometrists to receive laser certification. In 2011, he passed the certification examination to become one of the first 270 optometrists in the nation to become Board Certified and a Diplomate in the American Board of Optometry. Community involvement is paramount to Dr. Hart. Each year, the practice participates in Hogs ’N Hot Rods, happening this year on June 11. Dr. Hart has been the Chamber of Commerce President in addition to holding numerous other positions in the community. Dr. Hart and his wife, Pam, have two children, Ryan and Valerie. Appointments are available at Primary Eye Care 8:30 to 5:30 Monday through Wednesday and on Friday, and 8:30 to 4:30 on Thursday. They accept most insurances including Soonercare.

Certified Chrysler Technicians,” said Tim. Each time you bring your Chrysler, Jeep or Dodge to South Pointe for service, your vehicle will receive a free visual inspection for your peace of mind. The printed report provides a review of your vehicle’s maintenance schedules and informs you of anything South Pointe believes you should know about your vehicle based on its odometer reading and time on the road. Recommendations will be made, if needed, for a treatment plan. The report is complete, easy to read and understand, and enables you to make educated decisions for your vehicle’s service needs based on ratings of Pass, Caution or Fail. Some of the items included on the multipoint inspection report include tire tread depth, brake lining thickness, hoses and clamps, drive belts, battery terminals and cables, and a windshield inspection for cracks, chips and pitting. Additionally, a technician will inspect the engine, transmission and cooling systems for leaks, check and adjust tire pressure, and check hood struts. It is a thorough visual inspection of your vehicle.

If service is recommended, the report includes a complete list of labor and materials costs. You will also receive information to help you understand the recommended services, plus reasons for their consideration. It’s all about safety and confidence. The information and recommendations are provided to ensure peace of mind by helping you understand the operating state of your vehicle and the services recommended. Bring your Chrysler, Jeep or Dodge vehicle to South Pointe whenever it needs service or recommended maintenance. And it doesn’t matter where you purchased your vehicle; Tim and his crew will always make you feel welcome.
