Longtime customers may notice that Johnson’s business is in a new location, one which allows him more space for his growing business. “Our old office was downtown, and I think we had maybe 1,800 square feet in all,” he said. “The new building is 12,000 feet, with nearly 4,000 square feet taking up the showroom floor, which allows us to show more of the products we offer.” Johnson said he initially got into the lawn care and power tool business because of his father, Howard. “I’d been working at a steel business in Kentucky, and my father had bought an outdoor power tool business,” he said. “He gave me a call and said he wanted me to be closer to home and told me about his (new) business,” he said. “So, in 2001, I moved back to the area and went to work with him at the business, eventually taking it over when he semi-retired, and I’ve been here ever since.”
Several recognizable and respected brand-names in everything from handheld power tools to mowers and riding mowers are always in stock, Johnson said, but specialty items are available to order upon request. “We usually have about 275 to 350 mowers in stock, so it’s very rare that we’d ever be out of stock in mowers,” he said. Among some of the better-known brands of mowers that Johnson carries are Dixie Chopper, Dixon Ybravo, Snapper Pro/Ferris, Walker, with Ferris being amongst his personal favorites. “It’s been my experience in the last 18 years that one of the best mower brands overall on the market is Ferris -- nothing is smoother to ride than a Ferris, as far as riding lawnmowers go,” he said. “It’s got true all-wheel suspension, so it’s like driving a car in your front yard, instead of riding on a mower. It stands alone from the competition, and it’s really the best value for the money.” However, for those with smaller yards, TNG carries a selection of push mowers, such as the Ybravo, known for its simplicity, having a low weight, optimal cutting speed, excellent cut quality, superior bagging, low cost and ease of service. When it comes to service, Johnson said that’s what sets him apart from the competition.

“Service is definitely something we pride ourselves in,” he said. “We go above and beyond when it comes to that, and if anybody looks us up on Google or Facebook, we’ve got 5.0 stars on Google, and are rated at 4.9 stars (out of five) on Facebook, so clearly, our customers feel like they’re taken care of.” Johnson said he guarantees “in and out” service to his commercial and industrial customers, with blade sharpening available while you wait. “Anyone can sell something, but service is our No. 1 priority,” he said. “Our selection is good, but our service is the best.” Johnson’s head mechanic, Chris Nicholson, concurs. “Tim goes out of his way to take care of his customers – all of us do,” Nicolson said. “We treat our customers well, and I’ve been told by many of them that we are beyond hospitable. We work our hardest to satisfy whatever need they have, and when they come in here, whether it’s their first time or they come in regularly, they’re like family to us.” Nicholson, who is certified to work on Briggs and Stratton, Kohlers and Kawasaki, said the range of items he repairs is diverse, but he always “looks forward to the challenge.” “People will bring me everything from small items, like a weed trimmer or grass trimmer, on up to bigger items – I’ve worked on go-carts and UTVs before, and
of course, our bread and butter, lawnmowers. I’ve worked the small tractors, the big diesel machines – just about everything.” Even if an item hasn’t been purchased from TNG, Johnson said he’s happy to have his mechanics work on it “as long as it has a motor.” “One of the more unusual things we get requests for are to work on a boat with a mud engine on it – we get several (requests) for them, although we don’t sell them,” he said. Open year-round, TNG sells equipment to individual homeowners as well as to those who use them commercially, and to municipalities. Pick up and delivery is available. “If someone purchases a mower, we do have delivery, because a lot of people don’t have a pickup truck or a trailer,” he said. “We typically deliver out to about a 60-75 mile radius, although sometimes we do make exceptions and deliver a little further out than that.” In addition to Johnson and Nicholson, other TNG staff include Dylon Moss, mechanic, Larry Silver, salesman and Johnson’s father, Howard, who is in sales and handles pick up and delivery services. TNG is open from 8 a.m. until “the last customer is taken care of ” Monday through Saturday.

Mortgage Matters
by Megan Boyd RCB Bank
Building a house is a two-loan process.
F
irst, you need temporary construction financing to cover the building costs. Then, you need permanent financing for your mortgage. Eliminate uncessary stress by obtaining both loans at one location. Here are three reasons why.
No. 1. Cost Savings Financing both loans at one place, like a bank, streamlines your loan process. You provide information to one place, which uses it to prepare both loans. You may save on appraisal costs too. By using the same bank for both loans, you may only have to pay for one appraisal and then a less expensive appraisal certificate to certify the construction is complete. 10 |
VALUES
No. 2. Mortgage Pre-Approval Securing both loans through the same bank may reduce your risk of mortgage delays by allowing you to get pre-approved early for permanent financing. A pre-approval is based on documentation you provide at the time, assuming your situation does not change.
No. 3. Efficiency During construction, your lender works with the builder or contractor to ensure invoices are paid based on the work done and materials provided. Your lender monitors the progress of the project so payments are only made for work completed. By financing both loans through the same bank,
ROGERS COUNTY APRIL 2019 WWW.VALUENEWS.COM
the lender can schedule closing on your mortgage to occur quickly once the contractor gives the ok to move in. You can have as much or as little involvement in the construction process as you want. Some customers prefer the builder to work directly with the bank. Others prefer to be hands on. Building a house is a huge project. Find a lender you trust. You need a lender who is flexible and adaptable to your needs, and easy to reach by phone, in person or at the job site, as needed.

olid Rock Realtors wants to help save you the time and effort of buying or selling the ideal home, farm, land or property and will put their experienced real estate agents to work on your behalf. “We sell and market real estate and offer a variety of real estate services – residential homes are our forte, certainly the majority of our market, but we also deal in vacant land, farms, recreational properties and even commercial property business,” said company founder and owner Michael Urie. “Basically, if there’s dirt attached to it, we deal in it.” Now in its 10th year, Solid Rock first opened its doors in Claremore in 2009, with Urie as the solitary Realtor, serving clients in the area, but the business and Urie’s wealth of agents and realtors have since grown. “Claremore is still the main office, the ‘headquarters’ if you will, but we have also opened offices in Vinita in 2014 and Broken Arrow in 2016, and last year we opened an office in Miami,” he said. “This allows us to serve the needs of even more clients and cover even more of northeast Oklahoma.” Urie noted his staff of realtors has the training and experience needed 14 |

t American Shaman Claremore, local resident and business owner Jonathan Dietrich is in the pain-relief business. Make no mistake, Dietrich isn’t just another franchisee, he’s one of the product’s biggest advocates, because of his own personal experience. “Basically, I used to be a welder – I went to Vo-Tech school for that and had a career in welding for several years. Over time, my back just got broken down, my knees started killing me, and one day, my boss suggested I give CBD a try,” Dietrich said. “This was about two years ago, so people weren’t as informed about

it at the time as they are now, and I was a little uncertain – people didn’t really understand what CBD was yet – it was still kind of new. “So I looked around, tried various brands, some of which worked better than others, and I came across American Shaman, and I tell you what, it wasn’t 10 minutes after I bought the bottle and tried it, I started getting relief – I was on the way home and hadn’t even made it home yet,” he said. “From then on, I started taking it every day, finding relief, and I eventually decided to go into business and offer other people

the same kind of relief and help that I found.” CBD or cannabidiol is a natural constituent of hemp oil which has shown to have had a potentially wide range of medical applications without some of the side effects common in other, nonorganic medications. Although related to another medicinally active phytocannabinoid, tetrahydrocannabinol, (THC), CBD is the non-psychoactive component of hemp which does not have the same side effects, notably a sense of intoxication often associated with marijuana.

“Something we tell people who come to us is that they don’t have to get high to get help, and CBD will help them without getting them high,” he said. “One of the biggest misconceptions people have about the products are that they’ll get them high. They won’t.” “What we sell (here) is CBD products – water-soluble CBD in particular – hemp-derived, of course, it’s not marijuana, but from the hemp plant,” said Dietrich, who co-owns American Shaman Claremore with his brother, Tony. “Our products are American-sourced, American-grown, and 100 percent organic, which is also something that kind of sets us apart from our competitors, who may use chemical emulsifiers in many brands.” In addition to aiding in pain relief, CBD serves as an anti-inflammatory, it helps memory, reduces anxiety, relieves nausea, as well as helping people with pain relief, arthritis, headaches and much more, according to Dietrich. “We have several customers with children who have seizures, or they have seizures themselves, and they’ll get the product and come back, telling us that the CBD works well in helping control those,” he said. “Some people have described it to me as a ‘miracle in a bottle.’” Dietrich said CBD works on the cellular level, interacting with the human body through the endocannabinoid system, which regulates the body’s other systems in an attempt for natural homeostasis, Dietrich said. “During the refining process of the products, the oil is made to be more bio-available and more readily available for our bodies to absorb,” he
said. “What separates American Shaman from our competition is the nanotechnology used in the (oil) refining process, allowing our product to have more absorption into your body and it lasts longer.” “The quality of and concentration of our products also separates us from the competition – that’s something that many people come in here for – quality, because they’ve been to other places and the CBD they’ve picked up didn’t help them, so they decided to give us a try,” he said.
“What separates American Shaman from our competition is the nanotechnology used in the (oil) refining process, allowing our product to have more absorption into your body and it lasts longer.” Among the variety of CBD hemp oil products carried by American Shaman Claremore are water soluble, full spectrum hemp oil, topical body lotion and creams, face cream, lip revitalizer, topical serums, undereye serum, honey sticks, gummies and more. Dietrich said it’s not uncommon for customers to be referred to him through their doctor or chiropractor. Regardless of what brings them by, he said he and his staff are more than

At the end of the day, what I do, isn’t work – it’s like a dream because I’m getting to help people every day.” American Shaman Claremore offers a 10 percent discount to active or retired members of the military, first responders, firefighters and police officers. BRINGING HOPE & HE BY TOM FINK

or nearly six months, Northeastern Oklahoma Cancer Institute in Claremore has been changing the lives of cancer patients through cuttingedge technology, compassionate care and board-certified medical professionals. Among those on its medical team is Dr. Terry Styles, M.D., who was there from the very beginning. “I think we treated our first patient here in mid-June, and since then, we’ve continued to increase our patient volume as local community members and physicians become aware of our presence,” said Dr. Styles, attending radiation oncologist. “We have had a great welcome from the community because patients are challenged sometimes to travel to Tulsa or have a family member drive them to treatments somewhere outside the area. “While there may be several radiation oncology centers in

skin cancer patients, breast cancer patients, prostate cancer patients, and a smattering of other types of cancers.” Northeastern Oklahoma Cancer Institute provides patients with a variety of radiation therapy services, such as external beam radiation therapy, intensity modulation radiation therapy, and image-guided radiation therapy, using the latest available technology. In addition to being the only cancer treatment center of its kind in northeast Oklahoma, one of the things that sets the clinic apart from nearly all in the country is the equipment it has at its disposal, such as the Varian Halcyon treatment system. At the time the center opened, it was one of only four in the United States. “Varian is the one of the leading producers of radiation delivery machines in the world. The Halcyon, as with most linear accelerators, delivers the radiation in such a way to protect “They’re out living more of the surrounding their lives, and structures that’s what we’re (tissue), thus here for – to help limiting collateral people who come damage,” she to us with cancer said. “Also, to beat it and get it’s superback to living life.” fast – reducing the average
Tulsa, and of course, many in Oklahoma City and others around the state, our location in northeast Oklahoma serves as a great convenience to those around the area,” Dr. Styles said. “We have patients who come from Rogers County, but also Grove, Grand Lake and other towns surrounding the county.” Dr. Styles said the clinic’s proximity in Rogers County is a “huge asset” to patients who are receiving daily treatments Monday through Friday, sometimes for as many as eight or nine weeks, saving them the inconvenience of multiple trips to Tulsa or even further. “When we opened, we thought we might be limited in what we could treat, but because we have so many patients who, no matter what, weren’t going to make it to Tulsa, we found we could treat just about any cancer which requires radiation treatment,” she continued. “We treat a lot of lung cancer patients,

treatment time from 5-10 minutes to under two minutes -- and that goes a long way toward patient comfort. We see about five patients an hour, so walking them in and getting them ready for treatment actually takes longer than the treatment itself now.” With the top-of-the-line Halcyon here, I know that our patients are going to be getting the best possible treatment,” she said. Dr. Styles, a Philadelphia transplant who has been a physician for more than 20 years, said that although many statistics surrounding cancer have remained consistent, others have been shifting, such as cases of increased lung cancers and colon cancers in young people, but also, longer life expectancy for those receiving a cancer diagnosis. “We, in the area of radiation oncology, are seeing more and more patients that benefit from radiation treatments at some point during the course of their disease,” she said, “and I personally feel like I’ve seen a huge shift in that. Even patients who are diagnosed with a more advanced disease are living longer. Because we can now deliver treatment more safely and more accurately, we are more aggressive –we see more success and the patients are living longer.” Also working to save lives at the clinic in Claremore is Dr. Diane Heaton, who is the facility’s medical director. “Dr. Heaton has been in the Tulsa area for many years, and she was

instrumental in us developing the center here, as she recognized the need for it,” Dr. Styles said, “and she was instrumental in my coming to Oklahoma in 2017. We’re in very similar places in our careers, we had a good meshing in terms of that, and she’s the one who spoke to me about the need for physicians here.” When contemplating what advice to give anyone who receives a cancer diagnosis, Dr. Styles said to work closely with the doctor. “People will sometimes get online and read all these horror stories from people who’ve had terrible experiences after getting a diagnosis of cancer – that can be very scary,” she said, “but talk to and work with your doctor. People who have been diagnosed with and beaten cancer? They’re out living their lives, and that’s what we’re here for – to help people who come to us with cancer to beat it and get back to living life.”
Northeastern Oklahoma Cancer Institute is located at 1501 Florence Avenue (#191) in Claremore. Patients are treated primarily in the mornings, with regular office hours being 7 a.m. to noon, Monday through Friday, although someone is in the office through the afternoon to receive calls and answer questions. et it not be said that J.T. Bohannon is afraid to get his hands dirty – very, very dirty. As the owner of Wastewater Solutions of Oklahoma, Bohannon maintains and installs septic systems – a dirty job, which he’s more than happy to do, and with which, he’s got nearly 20 years of experience to draw from. Based in Claremore, where Bohannan is a fifth-generation resident, Wastewater Solutions of Oklahoma services customers within a 30mile radius. “For the last 18 years, I’d owned Cross-Bo Construction, and in that business, we did underground utilities, and I learned, just from
people calling and needing septic systems put in, how much of a needed business it was, especially in Claremore,” Bohannon said. “One of the things that led me to start my own septic company was that people could very easily be taken advantage of in this business – I don’t like that, so that led me to get my own (septic

business) going. After being in the construction business for so long and seeing people get gauged on a septic system.” In his own septic businesses for a year and a half, Bohannon specializes in conventional septic system and aerobic system installation, as well as maintenance on aerobic systems. For those unfamiliar, septic systems are underground wastewater treatment structures, typically used in rural areas without centralized sewer systems. They use a combination of nature and technology to treat wastewater from household plumbing produced by bathrooms, kitchen drains and laundry. Unlike traditional septic systems, aerobic systems – which Bohannon has at his own home in rural Rogers County -- produce a highquality secondary effluent (waste or

sewage), which is treated, sterilized, and then used for surface irrigation. Although the job itself can be an especially messy one, Bohannan takes it all in stride. “You know, I’m used to it, being in the construction business for so long, putting underground utilities in,” he said. “We did a lot of sewer work – a lot of live sewer work. I think you just kind of grow accustomed to that sort of thing. It just doesn’t bother me at all. “I’ve always compared what I do to what doctors do,” he continued. “The sight of blood makes me pass out, and I wonder every day how someone can possibly be around blood like that. I’m sure some of them probably feel the same way about me and what I do, what I’m around – ‘How can you do that every day?’, so it’s really just about what you’re used to, what you condition yourself to be around,
making sure, of course, to always take precautions.” While Bohannon said his “biggest thing” is installing new septic systems, he said he can handle repairs to older systems, as well as maintaining them through chlorination treatments or pumping services, whether at new construction or existing residential homes. The typical amount of time on a job is about a day. Bohannon said he tries to stay within “about a 30-mile radius” of Claremore, which would include Catoosa, Owasso, Pryor and portions of Tulsa, sometimes he does make exceptions and travels further. However, for as dirty as the job can be, something in which Bohannon takes pride in is the cleanliness of his work ethic. “Something I think that separates me from other septic companies would be my honesty and integrity,” he said. “I’m going to tell my customers how it is. I won’t beat around the bush, but I’ll be fair about the price. I think that sets us apart.” So, whether your septic system needs maintenance or you’re in the market for a new one, you can count on Wastewater Solutions of Oklahoma to solve your drainage problems.

ardening has never been one of my talents. I get really excited, and over zealous in the spring, with a car full of vibrant plants and pretty bags of seeds that I dream will soon grow in my garden perfectly enough for a Southern Living cover story. But then it gets hot, and I either over water or under water, and the bugs take over like it’s a buffet. By October I have tomato plants full of green leaves with a couple of tiny tomatoes that I watch carefully until the birds decide they’re worth eating before I can harvest them. But this year is going to be different. I decided to consult with a professional who knows Oklahoma weather, and the plants that thrive in it. As a chef, all I want are plants that produce food I will cook, flowers that

are edible, and herbs that will make all my dishes look and taste delicious. Is that too much to ask? I talked with Lindsey Fladie and asked her some questions about starting a “chef’s garden” in Oklahoma. Here is what I learned:
S: What is the most important factor to consider when planting a vegetable and herb garden? L: Soil health, sun requirements of plants, and access to water.
S: What are some Oklahoma native plants that you recommend?
L: Prickly pear is a fun one because cactus and succulents are so popular right now. You can eat the pads of the cactus and harvest the fruit. Passion flower vine is great if

you have a trellis. Not only does it produce beautiful flowers, it produces fruit as well.
S: What are some tips for growing tomatoes in Oklahoma?
L: Start with good soil full of nutrients. Also, plant tomatoes deep to establish a good root system.
S: Are there flowers that are good to plant in an edible garden to help with pest control?
L: Borage repels hornworms, and has an edible flower. Marigolds cause pests to become confused because of their strong aroma. Plants that attract beneficial insects include borage, cilantro, dill, fennel and sweet alyssum.
Grilled Steak Skewers with Chimichurri Sauce

Steak and chimichurri is a famous combination in Argentina! Chimichurri is a mixture of herbs, olive oil and aromatics that works perfectly with a grilled steak. This recipe uses steak on skewers to serve as appetizers or over a green salad. Of course, you could also grill the whole steaks to serve as the main course. If there’s any leftover sauce, add some more olive oil and dress a lettuce salad for a blast of great flavor.

S: What are your tips for feeding eding a vegetable and herb garden?
L: Before planting add a granular ular fertilizer to the soil, and after planting fertilize with a liquid every 3-4 weeks. Read the recommended doses on the fertilizer label, so you don’t burn the plants or starve them. Herbs don’t require a lot of feeding but use organic liquids such as Neptunes, fish and seaweed. Fortunately, I don’t have difficulty growing an abundance of herbs. I use them all year in my recipes, and they add a lot of flavor and color to my dishes. 3/4 cup olive oil 1/3 cup sherry wine vinegar 2 tbsp. lemon juice 1 cup chopped Italian parsley 1/2 cup chopped fresh basil leaves 2 tbsp. chopped fresh oregano leaves 3 cloves minced garlic 1/4 tsp. freshly ground black pepper 3/4 tsp. Kosher salt 1/4 tsp. crushed red pepper 2 pounds beef top sirloin or beef filet 12 wooden skewers, soaked in water
In a food processor, combine all ingredients except steak. Pulse to combine. Alternatively, you can blend the ingredients with a mortar and pestle. Do not blend to a puree. Remove half of the sauce and put in a bowl. Reserve remaining sauce. Cut the steak into 1 1/2” strips and season with salt and pepper. Transfer to a large plastic resealable bag and add the reserved sauce to cover the meat. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, and up to 3 hours. Heat grill or skillet over high heat. Remove meat from bag and shake off excess marinade. Thread the steak strips onto the damp skewers (to prevent them from burning), and grill each strip for about 2 minutes on each side, until medium-rare. Serve with reserved sauce.

or Laramie Stone, getting hired to work in the nursery at Stonebridge Garden, Lawn & Landscape Center in Claremore was like a homecoming – literally. As the granddaughter of original Stonebridge owners Ken and Doree Broostin, and the daughter of their children, Marty and Jolene Stone – also former Stonebridge owners – Laramie is the third generation of her family to work at the northeast Oklahoma-based nursery, garden and landscaping business. After earning her Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from Western Kentucky University, Stone was tapped by her parents to see if she might want to get back into the family business. “I’d wanted to work in forestry initially, but being back here is

We may not have been related by blood, but they kind of ‘adopted’ us, and when
Marty and Jolene moved to Kentucky, they wanted to keep it in the family, so Matt and I decided to buy it since we were pretty much like family to them.” As a business, Stonebridge serves its customers as the foremost garden supply store, landscaping and lawn care service and maintenance center in the county.

he women of Claremore’s Junior Ocieleta Club want you to save the date for a night of moonlight, mystery, magic and fun. The 2019 Junior Ocieleta Club Moonlight Masquerade will be returning to Rogers County, offering the opportunity to make memories at a formal ball event, all for a worthy cause. “This is our annual fundraising event to benefit several nonprofit agencies throughout Rogers County, as well as to raise money for our endowment scholarship program for local graduating seniors,” said Elizabeth Lee, Junior Ocieleta Club treasurer. “All the funds raised from this event go directly back into the Rogers County community, in one way or another, throughout the year.” Scheduled for Saturday, May 4, at the historic Will Rogers Memorial Museum in Claremore, the annual Moonlight Masquerade begins at 7:30 p.m. and includes a catered dinner by Front Porch Bakery, a cash bar, casino tables, a wine pull, a silent auction, and a live DJ to provide music and entertainment. Attendees should wear cocktail attire and are encouraged to wear a festive mask to add to the “fun and mystery” of the night, Lee said. “It’s a really fun way for everyone to dress up, most people know it’s a masquerade ball, so that’s always exciting,” she said, “and with our silent auction, people can bid on unique items and various services provided by local businesses and individuals from Rogers County and the Tulsa area.
Crystal Camp mpbell (fr f om left), ef Ashley May, Je ef ess s ica Peck, Ly yns nsey ey y Sim mmo m nss and d Allison Bur urkhea e d after ea the “u unm mas aski king ng g” at the e annual masquerade ball in Cla are r mo ore e.
Just a few of those (auction items and services) in the past have been concerts, tours, personal training services, salon services – all kinds of things, and there are usually about 50 items for people to bid on.”
“the evening is one of fun, and it’s a great ‘date night’ kind of event, but the real reason behind it, which is the fundraising, is the most important aspect of the ball.” Business sponsorships, corporate sponsorships and tables are available, in addition to individual tickets, which will be available at the door. Founded by Ocie Mayberry in 1956 as a nonprofit women’s service organization, members of Junior Ocieleta meet monthly, enjoy fellowship with other women, and discuss how to benefit the community by supporting area families and organizations, as well as providing scholarships to local high school seniors. Among some of the organizations supported by the members of the Junior Ocieleta Club of Claremore are the Claremont Elementary JO Reading Room, Claremore Public Schools Foundation, the First United Methodist Church School Supply Drive, JustusTiawah Schools, local food pantries, numerous Adopt-a-Family Projects, Safenet Services and several others.
Ma ary y Barras, Sav van anna ah Hadd Ha dd dock, and Eliizza abe beth h Le ee are ready to to dance ce the th he ni night aw way y.
“The evening is one of fun, and it’s a great ‘date night’ kind of event, but the real reason behind it, which is the fundraising, is the most important aspect of the ball,” Lee said. “We always try to meet the needs of the nonprofits and people who come to us – it doesn’t matter if it’s a teacher who needs supplies for their classroom, children who need coats, or the like. We go to the nursing home at Christmas and make it special for the residents there, we take Thanksgiving dinner to families in need, we get the requests of the veterans (at the Claremore Veterans Center) and try to meet those.” Top sponsors for this year’s ball are RCB Bank, Wallace for Life Essential Oils, Cherokee Nation, Mayberry Mansion, Solid Rock Realtors, Apex Title & Closing, Make it Special, More Claremore, Robson Properties, Arvest Bank and Pixley Lumber. Visit joclaremore.org for a complete list of our wonderful sponsors. Tickets are $35 a piece or $60 per couple and are available for purchase directly from any Junior Ocieleta member, Salon lace in Claremore or from the organization’s website. “It’s always a good idea to get your tickets early to avoid the line at the door.” Lee said. “Join us at this fun event for a worthy cause.”
