And don’t forget their feet, as Native Shoes have proven among The District Baby’s more popular brand of footwear, offering comfortable and ultra-light shoes for the smallest of feet. “One of the newer brands we carry are Me & Henry, which is a little boys clothing line, and Vignette, which are for girls,” she said. “These are sister companies, so oftentimes, there are coordinating outfits which are ideal for brothers and sisters – that’s actually a huge trend right now – people wanting their children to match, and many of the brands we carry offer coordinating or complementary outfits for little boys and girls.” Are you shopping for someone else’s child or a baby-to-be? Excellence in
Roofing, Siding & Guttering

o paraphrase an old saying, April showers bring May flowers …and wreak havoc on your home and its roof. Whether it’s to better protect your home sweet home from the Oklahoma storms, winds, heat and elements or you want to beautify your house, ABC Seamless in Chouteau has got you covered – literally. As specialists in remodeling exteriors and protecting homes with the strongest materials available on the market, ABC Seamless of NE Oklahoma owners Ed and Leanna Yoder are industry leaders in steel siding, gutters, roofing, windows and design. “We’re heading into spring, so we’re coming into our busy season,” said Leanna Yoder, ABC Seamless of NE Oklahoma co-owner. “When it starts warming up, homeowners start noticing work that needs to be done on their home – roofing, siding, painting, guttering, etc. and even though we work year-round, spring is always when our business absolutely picks up.” After working in general construction for over 10 years, Ed was building their own home and wanted to cover it with seamless steel siding however the nearest company was an ABC Seamless franchise located near Springfield, Missouri. “The Springfield ABC Seamless wouldn’t travel all the way here to install

HOW TO PLAN YOUR REMODELING PROJECT
DO’S & DON’TS BY CHRIS PUTMAN
14 |
A
house has a tall order to fill. It is the biggest financial investment most people will ever make. It is a place where children are raised, and memories are made, and it has to function well to serve its occupants over the years as needs grow and change. So what happens when those needs do change, a look needs to be updated, or the family outgrows the home? If the house is situated in a desired neighborhood—close to work, close to school—and no one wants to move, then it’s time for a remodel. “I have lived in this home 20 years, and I was really ready for an update,” Gayellen Johnson, a homeowner in the south Tulsa subdivision The Park at Southwood. “I saved up for it. I had 900 square feet of tile installed. It was the biggest mess; I even had to stay with my mom awhile. The end result was well worth it. It’s a good feeling to keep up a home.” Remodeling a home can be an overwhelming undertaking, and many property holders may not know where to start. The household needs to put their heads together and assess
VALUE NEWS ROGERS COUNTY APRIL 2020 WWW.VALUENEWS.COM
their skill level. Let’s say there’s a handyman under the roof. If the homeowner chooses to do all the work, a good resource for assistance is the local home improvement store like Lowe’s or Home Depot. They have a friendly staff with expertise in each department and can help recommend products and provide resources on how to tackle a project. Another valuable tool is YouTube instructional videos. Watch three to five videos, not just one, on the subject to ensure you are getting sound step-by-step instruction. Realize, a home renovator needs to be savvy enough on construction concerns to recognize which wall is load bearing, what years lead paint was used, and if the popcorn ceiling, floor tile, or house siding is made of asbestos. A decision needs to be made concerning tools, whether to purchase or rent equipment like a power washer or a table saw. If it is a one-time chore, then rent; but if the task is ongoing, then purchase. Also, building permit knowledge is a must. Those permits are mandatory to meet structural, fire safety and code requirements. If work is done without a permit or not up to code, then code inspectors can mandate the work done is ripped out.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, if self-evaluation reveals dad is all thumbs when it comes to construction and repairs, then a professional should be contracted. Depending on the size of the project, there is a difference in how a remodel is handled. Is there enough knowledge of the project to know what repairman to schedule and in what order? If homeowners are at a loss, then a contractor should be contacted. A contractor should be licensed and will likely have a team of repairmen like plumbers, electricians, painters and carpenters. The contractor will most likely have screened out the poor hires and have a crew he can rely on. When searching for a contractor, ask around for references and then contact those individuals about their experience with that contractor. Search for their name on the Better Business Bureau website to uncover their rating and to review any complaints and resolutions they have had with previous householders. Request a letter of insurance written in your name from the insurance company. A generic insurance letter won’t do. It has to be issued in the homeowner’s name and come directly from their insurance company. This coverage will protect the property owner if inadvertent damage occurs. One last check, do a Google search on the contractor. If lawsuits or other issues have taken place, then the property owner can be all the wiser and move on with their contractor search. One last step, get the job in writing. Don’t just rely on the bid paperwork. Documenting the job to include start dates, end dates, specific materials used, how the completed remodel will look with a sketch, a statement on clean up, and signatures blanks is just smart. HomeAdvisor is another reliable
source. HomeAdvisor is a site that connects homeowners with screened, local service specialists to provide home improvement, maintenance and remodeling projects. This is a fairly safe bet because these professionals rely on their reviews to gain new business.
plumbers are on the job. Consider the weather when remodeling. Will workers need to move the A/C unit leaving you without air conditioning on the hottest day of the year? Consider all the potential issues before launching into the project.
A house has a tall order to fill. It is the biggest financial investment most people will ever make. It is a place where children are raised, and memories are made, and it has to function well to serve its occupants over the years as needs grow and change. Tulsa-based ANDY OnCall is a one-stop service provider of specialists in their field, whether for fence repair, gutter installation, drywall work, fall cleanup, or a full gut and remodel. They claim no job is too small. Most of the heavy lifting has been done for the householder as they are insured, provide free estimates, a one-year guarantee and price by the job, not by the hour. “We’re here to serve the Tulsa area,” ANDY OnCall General Manager Jason Baker said. “We’re passionate about what we do. We established the business in 2003, and we do quality work.” Decide on a budget. The cost of materials and labor is never enough. More times than not, the job may hit a bump in the road. For instance, when tearing into a wall, the contractor may find plumbing not hooked up correctly, and that diagnosis explains why the kitchen sink runs slow. That’s great news, but that discovery is going to cost an extra visit from the plumber along with an extra charge — always factor in a contingency budget. Scheduling the job can be problematic if property owners don’t think through their daily schedule. Would it be smarter to plan a construction job to be ongoing during the school year when the kids are gone for the day and not underfoot of workers? Homeowners should plan for power outages when electricians are working and water shut-off when
Finally, realize the upheaval in a daily routine a reno can provide. Homes can be a dusty mess, children’s routines may be disrupted, and the loud noises and strangers in the house can be upsetting for furry friends. Also, realize that damage can be done to surroundings if household items are left in a worker’s way. Put plastic down on all floors in the area, cover upholstered furniture with sheets and just know that dust will settle everywhere, even rooms away from the work site. Change air filters before and after the project. But once the job is done and the mess is cleaned up, homeowners are left with a like-new house they can enjoy and be proud of. A side benefit of all the effort, the resale value just may increase enough to cover the cost of the remodel.

Support Your Local Restaurants
BY MARY BRANSFORD
O
ur media partners are working together to help spread the word about patronizing our local restaurants and businesses during this crisis. It is of primary importance to continue our support and help these businesses as much as possible by making purchases from them via their online stores, drive-thru, curbside take-out, and pick-up and delivery services. We encourage you to email us at Art@ValueNews.com if you don’t see your favorite restaurant on this list. We will continue to make updates as new information is received and update this article and post on all of our social media platforms and website.
IMPORTANT - Many businesses have adjusted their open hours. PLEASE CALL or EMAIL your favorite dining establishment and verify their hours of operation and service options. This is especially important because there are still some area restaurants who have not notified us about their service and menu options.
LET’S ALL BE A PART OF THE SOLUTION
We want to thank everyone who is helping others in their communities – from the health care and public safety professionals who risk infection to help 18 |
others and keep us safe, to people who are dropping off food and supplies for elderly neighbors, to those who have canceled beloved family events to stay home. Actions like these inspire confidence and faith that we’ll get through this together.
“ALWAYS CALL PRIOR TO ARRIVING AT YOUR DESIRED RESTAURANT.” It’s possible that their hours and services have changed.

y d o b y r e Is Ev Happy? BY SHANNON SMITH
I
was fortunate to have two wonderful grandmothers. They were completely different from one another, yet they each had unique qualities that I hope rubbed off on me. My paternal grandmother was Mammaw. Her real name was Camilla, but I only knew her as Mammaw. My sisters and I have such great memories of her that we have created a “Mammaw game,” where we ask
trivia questions about Mammaw, and we all shout out the answer in unison. She was one of 16 children, and she was a very strong woman! She lived in a small house in Oklahoma City, just 45 minutes from our house, so we visited her a lot. My favorite time to visit was when I got to spend the night by myself - just Mammaw and me. But, most of the time, my sisters and I stayed
Mammaw’s Mystery Pie Serves 8 Some of my fondest memories of childhood were when I visited my grandmother, Mammaw. When my sisters and I spent the night at her house, one of her favorite sayings was, “Is everybody happy?” She wasn’t much of a cook, but on special occasions, she made a dessert called Mystery Pie. Mammaw died when I was in high school, but when I make this pie, I am reminded of her positive attitude and constant desire for everyone to be happy. 4 egg whites 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1 cup brown sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla 25 Ritz crackers, crushed 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips 1 cup toasted pecans, chopped

Whipped Cream: 3/4 cup heavy whipping cream 2 Tablespoons powdered sugar Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 9” pie pan liberally with butter. Beat egg whites with baking powder until soft peaks form. Add brown sugar and vanilla into egg whites and continue to mix until well incorporated. Next add chopped pecans, crushed Ritz and chocolate chips and gently fold into the batter. Pour pie filling to the greased pan and bake for 30 minutes. Remove from oven and cool completely. While the pie is cooling, make the whipped cream by combining the heavy cream and powdered sugar together in a stand mixer and beating for 2-4 minutes until peaks form. Serve cooled pie with a dollop of fresh whipped cream.

at Mammaw’s together. We played in her spare bedroom, where she had a closet full of dress-up clothes, high heeled shoes and Barbie dolls. She had a drawer filled with jewelry for us to play with, including long strings of pearls, clip-on earrings and feather boas. My father’s childhood desk was in that bedroom, and we used it to play school and “office” since Mammaw had a calculator we could use for our pretend transactions. Often, my sisters and I would fight over a pair of shoes or one of the Barbies, and Mammaw would come into the room and say in a high-pitched voice, “Is everybody happy?” She always emphasized the word “happy” with a little more volume. And she always had a smile on her face. How could we not be happy? Some of my favorite memories of Mammaw were at her dining room table, a round wooden table with six heavy chairs. She had a shelf
in her cabinet full of orange Fire King bowls that we ate from at every meal. For breakfast, we had Cream of Wheat, and for lunch, we ate SpaghettiOs. It was a ritual I will always cherish. If we weren’t eating at Mammaw’s table, we were assembling jigsaw puzzles or playing Monopoly. But everything came to a halt at 6 o’clock because it was time to watch Wheel of Fortune. Mammaw had a crush on Pat Sajak, and she was a whiz at answering the puzzles on the show. Her dream was to be a contestant on Wheel of Fortune, but unfortunately, it never happened. Mammaw didn’t cook much, but she was really good at heating up cans of soup or SpaghettiOs. She also made us instant pudding, but if she was really feeling adventurous, she made what she called “Mystery Pie.” I think the mystery is that there are Ritz crackers in the mix, but now that I’m grown-up, I know that the real mystery was how Mammaw maintained her zeal for life and her ability to make everybody happy.

After finishing high school, she studied at the University of New South Wales for two years, majoring in theatre and film, before being accepted Imo the Victorian College of the Arts. Soon after graduating In 1996, she received her big break In Bruce Baresford’s “Paradise Road”, acting opposite Glenn Close, Frances McDormand and Cate Blanchett.
Since then she has worked extensively in theatre, film and television. Her film credits Include the critically acclaimed Praise, Innocence end Burning Man. On the smell screen, Marta has starred as Detective Sam Lawson in six Blackjack movies made for television. Her other TV credits Include “Hell Has Harbour Views”, the award-winning miniseries “After the Deluge”, “Crownies” and most recently the “Jack Irish” series opposite Guy Pearce. Regarded as one of Australia’s best stage actors, she was one of 12 actors who, In 2005, were offered exclusive contracts by the Sydney Theater Company to form “The Actors Company.” During her three years with the Sydney Theatre Company, she appeared In “The War of the Roses”, which won her a Helpman Award for Best Supporting Actress In 2009; “Serpent’s Teeth”, “Mother Courage” and Banie Kosky’s eight hour “The Lost Echo”, where she played a spider among other things. Her other notable theatre credits Include Melbourne Theatre Company’s “Three Sisters” and “The Baloon”.
With a career spanning more than two decades, her resume is teeming with highlights, but she counts her theatre credits as her most memorable. “Playing to an audience Is exhilarating and dangerous, one of the truest forms of human contact you have,” she says. However, she’s relishing the opportunity of sinking her teeth into a complex character she can develop over the course of a series. “That’s the beauty of television; you have the opportunity to explore an amazing character over however many episodes and you don’t get that with a play,” she says. “Right now I’m In heaven. This Is something I used to dream or.” Marta, just turned 40 and is married to actordirector Ben Winspear, whom she met 10 years ago when they were both working at the Sydney Theatre Company. Asian American Life is the only in-depth news magazine program that addresses topical issues affecting the Asian American communities in the United States and profiles Asian American leaders from around the world. The show premiered in 2003 airing only in the New York market. However, since 2010 the series has been distributed nationally throughout the public television system. Since its premier the show has received seven Emmy nominations for excellence in journalism. RSU Public TV began airing the show this year. RSU Public TV’s general manager Royal Aills says the Asian population in Northeast Oklahoma is growing. So, it’s important that RSU Public TV reflects that growth in our programming”. According to the online site ‘HomeSnacks” who reviews and combines data from dozens of sources into bite sized studies to understand
what it’s like to live in different communities, says four of the top ten towns in Oklahoma with large Asian populations are in Green Country. Asian American Life addresses topical news issues, entertainment, art, and profiles Asian American leaders nationwide. Past guests include David Henry Hwang, Tony awardwinning playwright of Madam Butterfly, Broadway Actress Ann Harada, Alan Muraoka, award-winning actor of Sesame Street, Andrea Jung, former CEO of Avon, Loida Lewis, former CEO of Beatrice, Dr. David Ho, Time Magazine Man Of The Year for AIDS research, award-winning fashion designer Anna Sui, Gold Medalist/Olympiads Lia Neal and Toby Dawson, World Series Mets pitcher Ron Darling, and 2020 Presidential Democratic Candidate Andrew Yang. Viewers can watch Asian American Life on RSU Public TV Saturdays at 6pm.

Since we last published our newsletter back in 2016, RSU Public TV is on a role. The station has won two Emmy’s, both in 2017, and we secured our broadcast future by purchasing a new antenna and transmitter. Our old Table transmitter was 20 years old and at end of life. We worked with the FCC to have them pay 90% of the cost. This means the next 20 plus years RSU Public TV will remain on the air and ready for the next round of new technology. General Manager, RSUTV
