HHave a Ball Learning to Dance Claremore Dance Studios offers a diverse range of dance classes for all ages and experience levels, with championship-level instructors.
By Sheryl Sowell teaching dance for 25 years. He competes in ballroom, country and west coast swing, and is a sixtime UCWDC World Champion. David prides himself on having a fun and energetic approach to teaching dance. Danielle is also a dance veteran and teaches ballet, tap, jazz, hip-hop and ballroom for ages three and up. She is an eighttime UCWDC World Champion in ballroom dancing. Danielle describes her approach to teaching dance as patient, yet fun. David and Danielle personally train and coach all of the studio’s instructors, so whether you are working directly with them or other members of their staff, you can be assured you are receiving the highest level of instruction at Claremore Dance Studios. David has owned Tulsa Dance Studios for 12 years, and he recognized the need for a topnotch dance studio in Claremore. “This is a great college community. We have been really happy here, and we look forward to meeting and dancing with many more Claremore residents in the future,” says David. Claremore Dance Studios offers group classes and private lessons. No partner is necessary.
Increased self confidence; numerous health benefits including cardiovascular and toning exercise; development of rhythm, coordination, elegance and grace; improved social skills; stress relief; and don’t forget about fun! The art of dance offers a wealth of personal gains. If you’ve never taken a dance step in your life or if you’re at the competitive level of dancing, Claremore Dance Studios in the heart of downtown offers a beautiful studio with championship-level instructors whose main goal is to make dancing fun, challenging and educational for their students. Co-owners and instructors Danielle Doubet and David Clanin opened the studio in February of this year and welcome everyone from beginners to competition-level dancers of all ages. “We are the only studio in northeast Oklahoma that offers dance instruction in everything from ballroom and ballet to country and west coast swing,” says David. “We stand apart because of our diverse background and experience – we do it all here. We truly offer something for everyone.” David has been dancing and
“We believe dancing is endlessly captivating, combining elegance and artistry,” says Danielle. “We are sure that you will find your experience with us to be really fun and educational. We promote a friendly studio environment that develops self esteem and mental and physical fitness.” Danielle adds that another reason they stand apart from other studios is that it’s more casual. “We don’t have a strict dress policy. We are really fun and want our students to enjoy themselves and to not stress about anything, but rather focus
on the experience of learning dance and having a great time.” New classes begin in August. Call (918) 729-6915 for enrollment information.

Get Back to a Pain-Free Life
The highly skilled doctors of Spinal Decompression of Oklahoma treat back and neck pain utilizing IDD® Therapy. By Sheryl Sowell Nearly everyone experiences back or neck pain at some point during their life; statistics show that this is true for 85 percent of the U.S. population. You may have heard about spinal decompression, or IDD® Therapy, as a treatment option, but are not sure exactly what it is. Spinal Decompression of Oklahoma (SDO), affiliated with Claremore Health Associates, Inc., is a board certified medical family practice headed by Dr. Dwight Korgan and his colleagues Dr. Gary Fortner and Dr. Steven Egleston. These physicians effectively treat back and neck pain with IDD Therapy using the Accu-Spina machine. IDD Therapy was developed by a team of neurologists, orthopedists and neurosurgeons to rehabilitate and heal damaged structures in the spine. “We administer treatment through intervertebral disc decompression, referred to as IDD Therapy,” says Dr. Korgan. “It is completely non-invasive and utilizes FDA-approved, highly advanced computer technology to deliver therapeutic distraction
forces to targeted spinal segments.” The treatment provides static, intermittent and cycling forces on structures that may be in pain due to distraction and positioning. The purpose of the treatment is to relieve the pressure between the vertebrae, causing water, oxygen and nutrients to flow freely throughout the spine and re-hydrate the discs. Non-surgical spinal decompression provides a method for doctors to properly apply a decompression force and create a vacuum within the disc to allow blood and oxygen to flow to the damaged area, which is critical to disc health and repair. The process helps reduce pressure on the affected disc, relaxes and retrains muscles, and supplies muscles with blood and oxygen necessary for healing. IDD Therapy is used to treat patients who suffer from herniated discs, bulging discs, posterior facet syndrome, sciatica, degenerative disc disease and general low back and neck pain. Nearly anyone with back or neck pain can benefit from the treatment. “Our patients are
diverse. We see everyone from office workers to construction workers to retirees,” says Dr. Korgan. The advantages of IDD Therapy are numerous. The cost is minimal in comparison to the cost of surgery. It is also safe and less painful than many other options; in fact, most patients find the treatment process to be comfortable and relaxing. Perhaps the greatest benefit of undergoing IDD Therapy is the ability to continue working during the course of treatment. “Patients can continue daily activities during therapy but must avoid heavy labor and lifting, as tissues are in a weakened state,” explains Dr. Korgan. In addition, most insurance plans will cover treatment, and payment plans are available at SDO for those patients without health insurance. The course of therapy includes approximately 20 treatment sessions and is completed in about 35 days. The first ten visits occur in two weeks. Each session is performed by a qualified medical technician
The doctors at Spinal Decompression of Oklahoma effectively treat back and neck pain with IDD® Therapy. (L to R): Steven Egleston, M.D., Gary Fortner, M.D., and Dwight Korgan, M.D. and lasts for a total of about an hour and a half. Treatments are custom-designed, with pain relief occurring at varying times for each patient. Treatment begins with internal heat applied to the treatment area by ultrasound, relaxing the deeper muscles and tissues. A hot pack is then administered on the surface to help relax the patient and their muscles. Next, the Accu-Spina machine administers a 25-minute treatment. It generally takes all 20 treatment sessions for full hydration of the damaged disc. During each session, the Accu-Spina machine gently manipulates the offending spinal segment, while helping stretch and re-tone underlying musculature. The result is improved lumbar health and pain elimination in a significant portion of patients treated. “We
have about an 80 percent or higher success rate,” says Dr. Korgan. The diagnosis and treatment process at Spinal Decompression is medical physician directed, with a qualified doctor overseeing all procedures. “Quality patient care is paramount, and we assure that all patient concerns are addressed and thoroughly explained prior to beginning treatment,” says Dr. Korgan.

DDo You Dream of Being of Cosmetologist? Claremore Beauty College offers hands-on experience and personal attention with a focus on helping students achieve success in the exciting field of cosmetology. By Sheryl Sowell If you’ve dreamed of going to cosmetology school but the schools you’ve checked out simply haven’t made the “cut,” be sure to check out Claremore Beauty College. In April of this year, Claremore Beauty College celebrated 43 years of service to the community. Claremore Beauty College stands apart from others of its kind for a variety of reasons. One unique attribute is that the curriculum is hands-on from the very first day of class. “Unlike many schools, we begin students working hands-on with mannequins on day one,” says owner Denise Nelson. “We also have an excellent clientele that comes in regularly, so students get plenty of practice working with real people as well.” Personal, one-on-one education is a priority at Claremore Beauty College. “Our students do not get lost in the crowd,” explains Denise. “We work with each and every student to help them get their life on track, with a focus on teaching them interpersonal skills that will make them even more successful in the cosmetology field.” The college boasts a 100 percent pass rate.
Denise Nelson and Mindy Gerving of Claremore Beauty College. Denise and her husband Duane have owned the school since 1996 and have enjoyed the privilege of seeing many young people succeed in their lives. “It is thrilling to take a young person into the school and see the difference in one year’s time,” said Denise. “He or she
can go from a quiet, insecure and unmotivated person to a confident, knowledgeable and successful career person.” Claremore Beauty College is located one block from the downtown area. It is in a onestory building with 3,300 square feet that can accommodate
30 students. The facility consists of one major clinic area, individual work stations, one large classroom, a library, and an administrative and counseling office. Denise is proud of all of the graduates and thrilled to see them enjoy success in the growing field of cosmetology. Thirteen of the Claremore area salons are owned and managed by Claremore Beauty College graduates. “It is such a joy to see each graduated student in town and hear about their success stories,” said Denise. “We are so proud of all of them.” Claremore Beauty College has educated over 1,500 students since 1969. The school prides itself on offering an outstanding education, and the instructors feel it is very important that students understand the basics of everything they do. “A good basic education will give them the freedom to make good choices in their client consultations. Yes, the student may have to do a project over and over to accomplish a task, but in the end they will be proud of their progress,” said Denise. “Every student learns at a different level, and we understand that. Some students learn very quickly, and
Your Career in
some need extra attention.” Because Claremore Beauty College doesn’t overcrowd the school, keeping class size to 15 to 20 students at any given time, the students have the regular privilege of one-on-one attention with the instructors. Denise has 33 years of experience in the field, and instructor Mindy Gerving has 18 years of experience. The cosmetology course is 50 weeks long, and financial aid is available for those that qualify. To check out Claremore Beauty College, you can go to their website, www.claremorebeautycollege.com.

FFeast on Chili and Sounds of Bluegrass The 33rd annual Bluegrass & Chili Festival will be held September 6-8, 2012 at the Claremore Expo Center grounds. By Sheryl Sowell One of the most popular events in northeast Oklahoma is rapidly approaching, with many opportunities to still get involved. The 33rd annual Bluegrass & Chili Festival will be held Thursday through Saturday, September 6-8 at the Claremore Expo Center grounds. According to Dell Davis of the Claremore Chamber of Commerce, sign-ups and applications are available for the Mid-America Regional Chili Cook-Off and Salsa Competition, Best Country in the City Vocalist Competition, Festival Market, Open Car Show and Junior Showcase. The Mid-America Regional Chili Cook-Off and Salsa Competition is presented by Air Products, Caseco, Tulsa Federal Credit Union and Reasor’s, and is an eagerly anticipated event every year. Cash prizes and trophies are awarded in the various divisions. The winner from the International Chili Society sanctioned division will represent the festival at the World Cookoff, which boasts a $25,000 first prize. The non-profit division, open to non-profits, schools and churches, allows participants the opportunity to win a $1,000 cash
prize awarded by ONG. Businesses can participate in the corporate division, where they will win prizes and bragging rights for the entire year. The corporate division is a great way for employees to have fun and gain recognition for the business. The open division is for any cook that would like to enter, and anything can be used as ingredients. The fun continues with the annual “Ham-manship” competition. “This showmanship award is so much fun to watch as each team works to ‘out ham’ the other one,” says Dell. Honors are also awarded for best booth decorations. The salsa division is one of the most popular events, with a variety of entries in the annual competition. Applications for the Best Country in the City Vocalist competition, presented by Wal-Mart and Osage Casino, are also available to those of any age who pre-qualify for the competition. A cash prize will be awarded for this event as well. The competition promises to be highly entertaining. For those under 21 years of age who would like to exhibit their stage talents in a non-com-
petitive environment, the festival will hold a Junior Showcase, presented by McDonald’s and Mike Davis Music & Sound. “Youth receive a sponsor bag, and by drawing, one will win a guitar,” says Dell. The festival continues with the Festival Market, which includes not only arts and crafts, but businesses showcasing their local services and products. Applications are available. Car show enthusiasts can also participate in the Open Car Show sponsored by Melton Sales, Sonic Drive-In and IBC Bank. The four-wheeled beauties are a wonderful addition to the event. Pre-registration and of day-ofshow registration is available. These are just a few of the events attendees have to look forward to at the upcoming 33rd annual Bluegrass & Chili Festival. You’ll also enjoy three stages of entertainment featuring bluegrass, country, gospel, classic rock and more, a car show, a tractor pull, dance exhibitions and more. It is not too late to get involved in the Bluegrass & Chili Festival! “Behind the scenes are volunteers and sponsors like

CGet Rolling to Inola The 5th annual ESA Gamma Pi Bunco Tournament will be held August 25 at the Inola Roundup Club. By Sheryl Sowell A fun, giving group of ladies in Inola are planning an exciting Bunco party to raise money for local charities. The Epsilon Sigma Alpha (ESA) Gamma Pi Chapter is presenting its 5th annual Bunco Tournament on Saturday, August 25 from 4 to 9 p.m. at the Inola Roundup Club. Radio personality Carly Rush will return as enthusiastic emcee for the event. The Gamma Pi ladies say that if you haven’t been to the tournament before, you must mark it on your calendar to attend. “We have an absolute ball!” says member Janie Stevens. “Everyone who participates is guaranteed to have a wonderful time. Players get so excited and rambunctious, laughing and shouting ‘Bunco!’” The tournament grows in popularity each year. One of the best parts about it is that pretty much anyone can play the game, whether you’re 9 years old or 90. It’s fast-paced yet easy to learn, and chances are you’re going to get hooked. Bunco is a social dice game with six rounds, progressing in order from one to six, where the number of the round serves as the target for that
round’s rolls. Players alternate turns rolling three dice, aiming for the target number, and gain one point for each die matching the target. If the player gets three of a kind of the target number (a Bunco), they get 21 points. The round stops when a player at the head table obtains 21 points. Whoever wins the most rounds is the overall winner. It’s that simple! Everyone receives a complimentary welcome bag with the rules and regulations and a variety of goodies, including a concession ticket worth a half sandwich, chips and a drink. Other concessions, including desserts, will be available for sale, and all the food is homemade by Gamma Pi members. Many door prizes will be given away, so you’ll have a great chance of leaving with something extra. Several gift baskets will be awarded for a variety of reasons – they’ll be given to the most enthusiastic player, oldest player, person who traveled farthest, first Bunco roll, first time to play, youngest mother, and the last player to Bunco, to name a few. Prizes will also be awarded to the
player with the most wins, most Buncos, most games lost and no wins. Gertrude Riddle, a 27-year member of ESA, is in charge of the prizes, and the other ladies applaud her talent for creating fantastic gift baskets. “She makes the cutest theme baskets from the huge variety of items donated by group members and local individuals and businesses,” says member Karla Applegate. A few raffles will be taking place. For $1 each ticket, you will have the chance to win a onenight stay at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Tulsa and dinner for two at McGill’s. A 50/50 raffle will be held as well. Raffle tickets will be sold for a hand-embroidered queen size quilt made by ESA member Gertrude Riddle that will be raffled at the 2013 Bunco Tournament. Also, for each non-perishable food item you bring for donation to the Inola Ministry House, you’ll have the chance to win a prize. So if you bring 12 items, you’ll have 12 chances to win! “The Ministry House is really in need of help right now,” adds ESA member Mary Adams.
Members of the ESA Gamma Pi Chapter in Inola hold the hand-embroidered quilt that will be raffled at Bunco in 2013. (L to R): (back row) Karla Applegate, Mary Adams, Bobbie Martin, (front row) Carol Applegate, Gertrude Riddle and Carolyn Domier. Local vendors will be set up during the tournament and intermission. Early registration for the Bunco Tournament is $12.50 per person, or $15 at the door. The first person to pre-register wins a prize, and deadline to pre-register is August 20. All of the money raised will benefit the Inola Volunteer Fire Department and Food 4 Kids at Inola Elementary School. Past organizations benefitting from the tournament include Inola Voluntary Animal Rescue, the Ministry House, the Inola Educational Enhancement Fund, the fire department, the middle school and the Roundup Club. ESA is a philanthropic organization with the mission to serve and support the community with passion,
concern and fellowship. The Gamma Pi Chapter hosts an annual Easter egg hunt, Christmas home tour, bingo tournament, twice-yearly patio sales and more. Their next fundraisers will be their patio sale in September and a school carnival in October. Each of their events raises money that goes directly towards assisting others. The ESA Gamma Pi Bunco Tournament is August 25 at 4 p.m. at the Inola Roundup Club, located off Highway 412 on 4230 Road. Call (918) 637-0595 to pre-register. For more information, contact

By Lorrie Ward August should prove to be a big month at J & J Pharmacy and Gifts in Claremore’s Ne-Mar Shopping Center, with Oklahoma’s tax free weekend kicking off the month and the 30-year anniversary of Vera Bradley’s signature line rounding it out on August 30. In fact, Vera Bradley will be making

marketing manager at J & J, also says that the store now carries a full selection of products that would be much needed not only by school students, but by those going off to college as well. “We have a full line of pillows, comforters, rugs, shower caddies, bath wraps and other accessories,” she says, pointing out that these items are perfect for a teenage girl who is decorating her room at home or for a college girl ready to create her own signature look in her dorm. The highly popular Vera Bradley line of products continues to grow at J & J Pharmacy, currently bursting in bloom from an entire corner of the store with bright, floral patterns and creating a full spectrum of colorful possibilities. “We just launched three new Vera Bradley patterns for the fall,” says Mandi, “and on August 30, we will introduce another three patterns: Provencal, Canyon, and Porta Bello Road. This is very exciting for Vera Bradley fans.” The Vera Bradley promotion, called VB Tote-Em, will be held August 30 through September 12, during which time customers receive a complimentary small cosmetic bag with purchase of Campus
Tote, East West Tote, Go Round Tote, 3-0 Tote, and Vera Totes. J & J will be sponsoring customer giveaways to go along with the launch. J & J is also proud to help women display their school spirit, offering a line of Claremore Zebras hats and T-shirts. Mandi encourages people to take advantage of tax-free weekend August 3-5, when no taxes are charged on clothing or shoes, and check out Zebra school items. “These are not your standard screen printed T-shirts,” Mandi says. “We looked for items that had a cute and feminine style.” She is also glad to report that J & J continues to carry collegiate items for OU and OSU, including hats, T-shirts and flip flops. “The collegiate gear is unbelievable,” she says. “And we have ordered the cutest new OU and OSU dresses anyone has ever seen!” This July marked Mandi’s first anniversary as sales and marketing manager at J & J. During that time, she increased the email list, which informs customers of upcoming specials and offers coupons, from 350 to 855 and created a Facebook presence for the store, with
announced specials and fashion tips. “Facebook has really helped get the word out about new products that come in,” Mandi says. “I have people all the time say, ‘I saw it on Facebook so I had to come in and get it.’ It’s nice to be able to connect with our customers on a different level.” Mandi notes how much she has enjoyed her year at J & J and looks forward to creating even more Facebook and email connections for the boutique. “I love working here even more now than when I first started, and I have fabulous bosses,” Mandi says with a smile, referring to owners John and Patsy Daniel. “I love coming to work every day. Not a lot of people can say that.”

TTwo Days of Doggone Fun The 3rd annual Claremore Dog Expo will be held August 25-26 at the Claremore Expo Center to benefit the local animal shelter. By Lorrie Ward If you love animals and are passionate about the issues concerning them, you will want to mark your calendar for one of the area’s premier events hosted to promote pet health and safety: the 3rd annual Claremore Dog Expo, held August 25-26 at the Claremore Expo Center and benefitting the Claremore Animal Shelter. “We want this to be a loving, caring and positive experience,” says Debbie Kara, owner of Karalot Pet Care and active volunteer at the shelter. To facilitate this goal, two days of fun activities have been planned. The feature event will be Dog Docks, a water competition in which dogs jump in water and compete for height, distance, speed and retrieving, open to anyone over the age of seven and their dog (any type of dog is welcome). “Last year we had competitors from six states compete,” says Jean Hurst, supervising animal control officer at Claremore Animal Shelter. “And we look forward to seeing them again this year.” Other competition categories include Herding, Agility, Schutzen, Rallying and
Dog Drill Team. Fun contests will be held as well, including Best Costume, Ugliest and Cutest Dog, People/Dog Lookalike, and Best Trick. For a small fee (donated to the shelter), attendees may also enter their dogs in an agility course. Admission to the event is $6 for adults, $3 for youth ages 6 to 12, and free for children under 6. The youth entry fee is half price with a donation of dog or cat food or cat litter for the shelter pantry. Weekend passes will also be available. Since one of the primary aims of the Claremore Animal Shelter is to adopt out pets to loving homes, it is no surprise that animals will be available for adoption at this event. “We will be featuring dog adoptions from local shelters and rescue groups like Lab Rescue, Corgi Rescue, Boxer Rescue, Zois Rescue and others,” says Rocky Ambrister, animal control officer at Claremore Animal Shelter. “This event got started not only because we wanted something for people in the community to come and participate in with their dogs, but so we could showcase shelter and rescue dogs
that need homes.” The event is also designed to be educational. The Tulsa Zoo will have a representative on hand to teach about native reptiles of Oklahoma, as well as to educate people on proper pet ownership. Jean reports that there will be veterinarians present at the event also. “We encourage people to bring a list of questions about pet health, grooming and training.” Jean and Rocky hope this event will educate people about pets and pet ownership, as well as the goals of the shelter. “All of our volunteers are from the community, and we have received a wealth of support from Petco as a corporate sponsor for this event,” Jean says. “We are a family of animal lovers with the same goal in mind – to save abandoned animals.”

VVendors Wanted Vendor space is available for two big September events – the Gold Rush Mercantile and the Rogers County Fair. By Lorrie Ward With school starting early this year, the month of August is sure to race by with September at its finish line –which is why Tanya Andrews, executive director of Claremore Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB), and Lisa Dennis, marketing coordinator, want to be sure and remind local craftspeople, merchants and vendors of upcoming opportunities for booth space at the Gold Rush Mercantile on September 1-3 and the Rogers County Fair on September 13-15. The Gold Rush Mercantile is held in conjunction with the Oklahoma Palomino Go for the Gold Futurity, a horse show and competition in which 250 Palomino horses and their owners, riders and families join to display their talents at the Claremore Expo Center September 1-3 (show hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on the 1st and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the 2nd and 3rd). In keeping with the spirit of this event, the Gold Rush Mercantile is accepting exhibitor registrations to those selling western wear and jewelry, western décor and home furnishings,
as well as horse care related items such as equestrian supplies, accessories and equipment – even items as large as horse trailers and pickups. Exhibitor
applications will be accepted through August 24 and can be obtained by calling the Claremore Convention & Visitors Bureau at
ROGERS COUNTY
(918) 341-8688. Admission is free to the public. “This is a chance for local entrepreneurs and businesses to showcase their merchandise,” says Tanya. “The event will also have great food and activities for the children.” After a short two-week interval, it will be time for the 98th annual Rogers County Fair, and vendor sign-ups are open for this event as well. As marketing coordinator of the CVB, Lisa Dennis broadened the scope of the fair last year and will do so even
Page 15
more so this year. “This year will be the first year in a long time that we’ve added a true old-fashioned fair carnival,” she says. “We will have fair food and rides for the kids.” This larger arena provides even more opportunities for potential vendors. Lisa reports that last year’s vendor booths hosted a wide variety, everything from food to insurance to jewelry to handmade items to western tack to the local marina. Lisa, who graduated from Western Illinois University and came to work for the visitors bureau in January of 2011, enjoys living and working in Rogers County, and her commitment to her new home is evident by her desire to make the Rogers County Fair better than it has ever been before. She hopes that vendor sign-ups will reflect an even broader spectrum of what Rogers County has to offer. Fair book and entry forms for potential Rogers County Fair vendors are available at www.rogerscountyfair.com, with an August 24 deadline. Information can also be obtained by contacting Tanya or Lisa.

HHelping Families Stretch Budgets Just Between Friends consignment sales save families money on children’s clothes and equipment. By Paul Tackett Just Between Friends continues to help families stretch their budget by continuing to offer children's clothes and equipment at unbelievable savings. Just when the economy seems to be getting better, something else pops up, and it finds a way to contribute to
inflation and the shrinkage of everyone's take home pay. For many families, the toll on the family's budget continues and with back to school around the corner, many parents know buying clothes for their children and the necessary equipment can be expensive.
A shopper finds a great bargain at a recent Just Between Friends sale.
Just Between Friends, the nation's leading children's and maternity consignment sales event, helps families find some stability and security by being able to purchase an entire season’s wardrobe, even school uniforms, on a reasonable budget. Marcy Leffingwell, one of the new owners of Just Between Friends Broken Arrow/Bixby, doesn't always know where to begin when she starts talking about her JBF sales event. "Families not only eat better, they live better because JBF helps put some expendable income back in the family budget because of the great savings that can be found at a JBF sales event," Leffingwell said. Typically shoppers can experience 50 to 90 percent off clothes and equipment, compared to retail prices. "Moms, dads and grandparents can get quality items for their children at amazingly low prices and still be able to buy the groceries for that month," Leffingwell said. Amber Post, franchisee of Southwest Tulsa and Owasso, was a JBF shopper before she started organizing her own JBF events. "We were young college students, broke and on a tight
budget," Post said. She had a six-month-old daughter the first time she shopped at a JBF and even then, she was a slave to fashion. Before, Post had to rely on her mom and grandma to buy the really cute things. "I could only afford to buy her the basics and shop the clearance racks, but once I discovered JBF, it was like a dream come true," she said. Suddenly Post could buy everything she wanted for her and not jeopardize her family's budget. After shopping once, she decided to consign and received a check for $75 from items she sold, and she was hooked. It was so easy to do, and a sales event has so much to offer in terms of clothes, shoes, toys, books and more for the upcoming season. Daven Tackett, owner of Just Between Friends Tulsa and co-founder of JBF, is most pleased that the sale is a dignified way for a parent to buy children's clothes at great savings. Moms and dads can feel good about letting their children wear and play with the items purchased. "My mother was divorced and disabled, trying to raise three girls on a fixed income. She did many creative things to make ends meet, including
buying some of our clothes from resale and going to garage sales," Tackett said. "As kids, we didn't know there was any other way to buy clothes. We were just always excited and happy about getting something new to wear." Families across the nation are realizing shopping resale/consignment makes sense. For the upcoming season, Just Between Friends has four area sales to choose from. Southwest Tulsa is scheduled for August 4-6 at the Glenpool Conference Center, followed by JBF Tulsa, the franchise system’s largest sales event, set for August 19-25 at Expo Square. Owasso will occur September 13-16 next to Reasor's, and JBF Broken Arrow/Bixby is taking place October 11-13 at the SpiritBank Event Center. Labor Day Lakeside Extravaganza
A full weekend of activities is planned for the entire family at one of Oklahoma’s most pristine lakes. By Sheryl Sowell Beginning on Saturday, September 1, Cross Timbers Marina at Skiatook Lake is hosting three days of activities that will feature live music, boat tours, raft races, Backyard BBQ Cook-off, Vintage Car Show, Golf Competition, a Kids Zone, cardboard boat races and more. “Clean, Clear and Close,” with over 160 miles of naturally
beautiful shoreline, Skiatook Lake is located just 25 minutes from downtown Tulsa. According to Ron Howell, Cross Timbers Marina developer, “This area has not had a traditional Labor Day lake event for many years, and it was our feeling that Labor Day should have an event attached to the water. Skiatook Lake is a
wonderful ‘play’ lake – we have the cleanest, clearest water in northeast Oklahoma. We anticipate our inaugural Labor Day event to be a wonderful, fun celebration that families will return to participate in year after year.” Starting off the weekend on Saturday, September 1, lakegoers will enjoy music from local

AA Claremore Original Ne-Mar Shopping Center has been a happy home to Claremore business owners for more than four decades. By Lorrie Ward For over four decades, Ne-Mar Shopping Center in Claremore has been living up to its title as “A Claremore Original,” providing homes for long-time businesses as well as introducing new faces to the scene on West Will Rogers Boulevard. One of the newer faces in recent years is All Star Trophy & Screen Printing, and according to owner Deric Brock, moving to Ne-Mar in October of 2008 turned out to be a great decision. All Star Trophy celebrated its 30-year anniversary last fall and
has enjoyed even greater success since its move from Chelsea to Claremore's Ne-Mar Center. "We built a sound reputation in northeastern Oklahoma while we were in Chelsea by word of mouth and had a good 26 years there," says Deric. "But being in this spot with its high traffic and visibility has made a significant difference." The location has also enabled Brock to establish a working partnership with RSU. Though All Star Trophy has changed locations in recent years, Deric's philosophy has not.
All Star Trophy & Screen Printing owner Deric Brock.
"Personal name and business name are synonymous when it comes to small business," he says. "We go by the Golden Rule here and believe that success is always found in going the extra mile for our clients." All Star Trophy has a new neighbor just a few doors down at Promote 2 Win Advertising, a shop owned by Jeff Losornio offering promotional products for business organizations and groups, with an emphasis on screen printing and embroidery products. The shop also produces banners, pens and more, and has opened up a shop mainly to showcase what it can do for its clients. Almost everything is custom-made at Promote 2 Win Advertising, but Jeff does plan to have a retail section for the local schools – Claremore Zebras, Sequoyah Eagles, and Verdigris Cardinals. “I’ve been in this business for 22 years, and I want to broaden the customer base by lowering overhead and going back to the basics,” says Jeff, who stays actively involved with community projects by offering discounts to groups or businesses helping to raise money for charity through a
Promote 2 Win Advertising owner Jeff Losornio and Tyler Grubb. program called Chari-Tees. “We work with suppliers to help get prices down so the organizations can actually make money for their causes,” Jeff says. “We are not all about making money, but about giving back to the community.” For more information on Promote 2 Win Advertising, check out their website at www.p2wadvertising.com. Around the corner, Ne-Mar recently welcomed yet another new member to its family— Infinity Fit Club. Currently, Infinity Fit Club is the only 24-hour co-ed gym in Claremore, offering access to top-of-the-line equipment, personal trainers who can do personalized health assessments (great if you are just starting out), and popular classes like boot camp and Zumba, taught by certified, experienced instructors. “Our personal trainer Jennifer Freeman will set up a workout program and help you define your goals to guide you along,” says owner Kelli Overgard
Cabler. “We also offer one-on-one training sessions for a reasonable fee.” Infinity Fit Club may be new to Ne-Mar, but Kelli Overgard Cabler is no stranger to the “Claremore Original.” Her grandfather started The Men’s Shoppe, one of Ne-Mar’s first businesses, and both her parents owned shops in Ne-Mar during the 70s and 80s. Thus, Kelli was well acquainted with the reputations of Ne-Mar owners Terrie and Steve Neely (who were also her neighbors as she grew up) and is excited to continue in her own family’s footsteps. “You always hear horror stories about people and their landlords, but you won’t hear one of those from me,” Kelli says. “The Neelys are a dream to rent from – I love it here!” For more information, contact

TTake a Shine to Felts Felts Shoes in the Ne-Mar Center offers high-quality products and individualized service for the entire family. By Lorrie Ward Claremore schools start a bit early this year on August 9. With the rapidly approaching date looming over their heads, parents buying school and athletic shoes for their kids might be tempted to adhere to the idiom, "any port in a storm," rushing out to buy new shoes for approaching school days and ball games. But when it comes to buying shoes, it pays to take a little bit of extra time and care to get just the right fit for those developing feet. “If your feet are not happy, your body is not happy,” Tabitha Felts of Felts Shoes in Claremore says. That is why she has become an expert on shoes and how they affect the feet, and wants to make sure customers have not only the best shoe, but the best fit possible for their optimum health and wellbeing. “If people aren’t happy with their shoe, they usually don’t blame the vendor. They blame the person who sold them the shoe,” she relates. “I want people to be happy with their purchase.” Research proves Tabitha's point. According to an article about walking shoes on the Mayo Clinic website, it is not
Tabitha Felts, owner of Felts Shoes.
only important to wear the right type of shoe for different occasions, such as walking, running or working, but it is important to follow certain guidelines to get the best fit. The experts urge readers to consider the shape of their feet and arch type when buying a shoe and to make sure they consult a professional fitter, who will measure their feet each time they buy shoes, as foot size changes over the years not only in children, but in adults as well. This is why it is important to visit a store such as Felts Shoes, where a true professional like Tabitha can help guide you through the steps in finding the perfect shoe for your foot. She knows that common foot problems – corns, bunions and hammertoe – can often be traced right back to a poorly fitted shoe. Other more subtle issues can also be caused by incorrect fit as well, including knee, ankle, back and hip pain. She encourages customers to allow her or a staff member to measure their foot to get a correct size, instead of just making assumptions, and to be willing to invest a little bit extra in order to get a quality brand shoe. She reports that many
Page 23
people will skimp on shoes for work especially, since those shoes will get a lot of wear and tear. But it is the wear and tear on the whole body from the work day that makes Tabitha advise the customer to rethink this decision. “When you are on your feet all day,” she says, “what bothers your feet will bother your whole body.” Felts Shoes has its usual wide selection of carefully chosen, name brand, quality footwear. Tabitha reports that Sperry and Vibram remain popular this year, as well as Sanuk and DC, and she will be receiving a big selection of the latest UGGs in September. She also carries accessories: insoles and shoe strings, as well as Oakley sunglasses. Shoes qualify for the tax free weekend coming up the first weekend in August, so remember to mark your calendar for a visit to Felts. And Tabitha also wants to remind everyone that Felts Shoes has a layaway plan – “one of the great things about being a small business!” she says with a smile – and so, it is not too early to start your Christmas shopping.

AAcademy of Risk Seminar The Holmes Organisation will present its annual client appreciation seminar August 30 at the Renaissance Hotel in Tulsa. By Lorrie Ward With the cost of providing benefits to employees on a continual rise, CEOs, risk managers, business owners and HR personnel need to keep abreast of the latest changes, developments and ideas in order to balance their budgets. That’s why The Holmes Organisation in Tulsa will present its Academy of Risk 2012 Client Appreciation Seminar on August 30, 2012 at the Renaissance Hotel in Tulsa. “We provide ongoing education for our clients,” says Dee Sink, lead consultant at The Holmes Organisation. “The Academy of Risk Seminar is part of that.” One of the main topics covered at the seminar is OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) with speaker Danny Edwards, risk architect, who will cover subtopics including “What To Do If OSHA Comes Knocking at Your Door,” “Surviving an OSHA Audit,” and “OSHA Compliance Obligations.” “Danny has actually had clients who have been through OSHA audits,” says Cindy Davidson, account executive at
The Holmes Organisation. “He’s helped his clients and wants to show others how to survive these audits.” Tanya Curry, director of claims for The Holmes Organisation who has been called upon to teach classes to state organizations on her
seminar topic, will cover workers’ compensation issues: “Workers’ Compensation Basics: Who, What, When and Where It Applies”; “Best Claim Practices”; and “Return to Work and Light Duty: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.” Felix Jones, retirement

specialist for The Holmes Organisation, will speak on 401(k) disclosures, covering subtopics such as “Fee Disclosure Regulations,” “Retirement Plans,” “Impact of the Department of Labor’s 408(b)(2),” and “How to Survive a 401(k) Audit.” Eric Moon, dubbed “Wellness Dude and Coach” by the staff at The Holmes Organisation, where he serves as corporate programming consultant, will speak on “Crafting a Culture of Wellness” and “Incentives and Barriers for Wellness.” The seminar will wrap up with keynote speaker Kim Holland, who will cover topics relating to health care reform legislative updates, shedding light on the status of healthcare reform implementation across the United States and the impact of the Supreme Court’s latest decision on healthcare reform. “Kim Holland is a former insurance commissioner and currently serves as a lobbyist in Washington D.C.,” says Sink. “She is highly qualified to bring us all up to date with what’s
happening on the hill.” Bringing clients up to date with information and education is what The Holmes Organisation is all about. “We value our customers, and we want to make sure they are continually educated on current legislative and regulative updates,” says Davidson. “That’s why we do all of this.” “The basis of this seminar is education and serves as a ‘thank you’ to our clients, but you don’t necessarily have to be a client to attend this seminar,” Sink adds. “However, seating is limited, so it is best to contact us as quickly as possible if you are interested. We welcome anyone who deals with and wants to learn more about these issues.”

iBlock®
Robotic Assisted Total Knee Replacement Available exclusively with Dr. Ronald LaButti
This brand-new technology produces a 3-D image of the knee which allows for superior surgical accuracy and alignment. When compared to more traditional forms of navigation, the iBlock cutting guide provides a significant advantage not only for the surgeon, but for the patient as well. When a joint is replaced, even a miniscule misalignment between the implant and the bones can harm joint performance and longevity. This innovative technique allows for precise measurements made dynamically in real time. There are only five “iBlock” units in the United States, and this technology is available in Tulsa only with Dr. LaButti.

New Goodwill Opens in Glenpool A new Goodwill store and donation center on Highway 75 now serves customers in Glenpool and surrounding communities.
By Duane Blankenship Goodwill Industries of Tulsa’s store number 10 celebrated its ribbon cutting and grand opening ceremonies on July 12 at 8:45 a.m. The parking lot was overflowing as local dignitaries and eager customers attended the ribbon cutting ceremony and then proceeded inside the beautiful new store, filling its aisles with shoppers. The first 50 customers received a Goodwill 85th anniversary shopping bag. The new Goodwill store is located on Highway 75 and 125th Place, just south of Walmart, where it will
conveniently serve customers from Glenpool, Jenks, Bixby, Kiefer, Beggs, Okmulgee, Liberty Mounds, Sapulpa and surrounding areas. Goodwill Store Manager Debbie Timmons said, “We have had wonderful support from Goodwill and the Glenpool community. And I have the most incredible associates in this store. I really appreciate them and all the hard work they did to make the grand opening such a tremendous success.” The new facility is both a
Goodwill donation center and retail store. As Goodwill President David Oliver said during the grand opening ceremony, “We accept and sell any of the items you will see in the store when you shop here.” The bright new shopping area is stocked full of wonderful fashions for ladies, men, juniors and children, and offers clothing, shoes, purses, housewares, books, small household appliances, wall decorations, collectibles and more. The donation center does not accept large appliances, mattresses, tires,

Furniture, however, can be donated 24 hours a day, seven days a week at the Goodwill Donation Center at 2800 Southwest Blvd. in Tulsa. The Glenpool Goodwill store has scheduled several promotions to accommodate shoppers. The first and third Tuesdays of each month are designated as Senior Day Sales. Oklahoma’s tax-free weekend on clothing and shoes is August 3-5. Saturday, August 11 highlights Goodwill’s Back-toSchool Sale. August 16 is Goodwill Day. August 25, the last Friday of the month, is designated as Goodwill’s Customer Appreciation Sale. Debbie Timmons encourages shoppers to come to the store soon to find some really great deals on back-to-school and school uniform items. Supplies will be limited, so don’t put it off. “It’s always fun to shop Goodwill as seasons change,” says Debbie, “and as we approach the holiday season.” Hours for both the Goodwill store and donation center are 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday
through Saturday. They are open from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. Goodwill Industries of Tulsa’s mission is simple: to provide job training, employment opportunities, and support services for people with disabilities or other employment barriers. “We envision a community where all people have the training and opportunities they need to be successful in the workplace, regardless of the employment barriers they must overcome,” said Goodwill President David Oliver. At Goodwill, people are treated with dignity and respect. And it’s all made possible by people like you who donate your goods to Goodwill and shop their retail stores. Debbie and each of her associates look forward to seeing you soon at the new Goodwill store in Glenpool. For more information, contact

the RRide Mother Road The annual Bike MS Ride is scheduled for September 15-16. By Duane Blankenship Prior to 2003, Mary Benes was an avid runner and fitness buff. In January of that year, she noticed that she was occasionally tripping with her left foot. Initially she didn’t think much about it, but with time the condition worsened. Mary then started noticing that she had begun clipping her right ankle with her left foot. She knew something was causing the problem and consulted with doctors, who began a lengthy barrage of tests in an effort to pinpoint the cause of the problem. Mary was originally diagnosed with just about everything, from a bulging disc to a left knee abnormality, as it had begun buckling without rhyme or reason. In early November of 2003, her orthopedist performed a strength test on her left knee and found it to be weaker than normal. The doctor concluded that Mary’s issues could be related to a neurological disorder, and she underwent a head-to-toe MRI. She was finally diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS). Mary was placed on a daily
injection regimen of Copaxone, a prescription product developed for the reduction of relapses in patients with multiple sclerosis. She immediately saw favorable results and has had no relapses to date. Although she could no longer run, she still had a strong desire to remain fit. Mary has a vibrant personality, loves people, and loves to help them. She attended a “newly diagnosed” seminar in May, 2004. She was so impressed with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society that she began volunteering so that she could reach out and share her story. “In 2006, I volunteered to help with the Bike MS bicycle ride and found myself making a commitment to do the ride myself the following year,” said Mary. The rest is history. Mary was asked to join the American Airlines MS Bicycle Team in 2007 and has since participated in each yearly Bike MS ride. This year’s Bike MS guest celebrity is Kristin Dickerson, co-anchor of Tulsa’s Channel 8 evening news. She will be riding part of Bike MS with Mary. As a spokesperson for the
National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Mary has spearheaded development of other programs that aid research and treatment to stop the progression of the disease, restore function, and end MS forever. The National MS Society supports and funds research activities spanning all research stages, including early discovery research, translational research that brings promising ideas forward into actual therapeutic solutions for testing, and clinical trials. Their unique approach drives the pursuit of all promising avenues that can impact those living with multiple sclerosis. Oklahoma’s 2012 Bike MS event (also known as “the Mother Road Ride”) is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, September 15-16, and will begin at the Hyatt Regency Tulsa on Saturday morning. Riders will depart for Chandler, where they will camp overnight in a local park. Sunday morning, riders will mount their bikes and head for the Oklahoma State Capitol, where the ride will conclude.

Guest celebrity rider Kristin Dickerson, co-anchor of Tulsa’s Channel 8 evening news, and Mary Benes, spokesperson for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, have been training for the 2012 Bike MS Ride. Buses will bring Oklahoma City participants to Tulsa Friday evening and will transport Tulsa area cyclists back home Sunday afternoon following the ride and closing festivities. If you are a cyclist but have never participated in Bike MS, this is your opportunity to support the event and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Your involvement will aid in research and the finding of a cure for MS. “Whether you’re interested in cycling, volunteering to help with the Bike MS event, want to make a donation, or sponsor a team, everyone makes a
difference to those of us with MS,” says Mary. “Since I was diagnosed with MS in 2003, it’s been quite a ride!”

PPlane Fun The Will Rogers & Wiley Post Fly-In will be held Sunday, August 12. By Pat Reeder Will Rogers was an actor, writer, trick roper and rancher. At the time of his death, he was all these and undoubtedly the world’s most avid aviation booster. Aviation in the heartland will be celebrated Sunday, August 12, when planes land on a 2,000-foot grass strip adjacent to the Will Rogers Birthplace Ranch house on Oologah Lake. The annual Will Rogers & Wiley Post Fly-In is a family event where visitors can see vintage aircraft, World War I fighters, experimentals, biplanes,
helicopters and ultralights, and talk with the pilots who fly them. Activities from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. are dotted with live music, Cherokee storytelling under the shade trees, an antique and classic car show, and inflatable amusements for the kids. Food concessions will be available. Sponsors for the event are the Will Rogers Memorial Museum, Will Rogers Memorial Foundation, Cherokee Nation Businesses and Will Rogers Downs.
Check out a variety of aircraft at the annual Will Rogers & Wiley Post Fly-In.
Bring your own lawn chair and watch planes as they land, and listen as Ross Adkins and Tony Isler describe the planes and announce their pilots as they land. Antique and classic cars will be showing on the lawn. Vistors have an opportunity to vote for the “People’s Choice” plane and car. The winner will receive a Will Rogers trophy. The log-walled room where Will was born has been preserved as it was when he was born November 4, 1879, with the original walls and period furniture. Learn about the life, wisdom and humor of Will Rogers, see the longhorn cattle roam, chickens scratch, and goats and burros beg for attention at the living history ranch. The house at 9501 E. 380 Road (two miles east of Highway 169 on 380 Road) is open for tours 365 days a year. Doris “Coke” Lane Meyer, great-niece of Will Rogers, will be on hand to sell and autograph her new book, “I Called Him Uncle Will.” Last year more than 90 planes landed, highlighted by the just completed rebuild of a 1930 Spartan Aircraft, owned by Spartan College of Aeronautics
Children can enjoy inflatable fun at the annual fly-in. and Technology of Tulsa, one of the Funk planes manufactured in Coffeyville, Kansas, and a group of Tulsa pilots from Jones Riverside Airport, who flew formation in their Stearman planes. Pilots come from as far away as Texas, Kansas, Arkansas and western Oklahoma and as near as Chisum Field about five miles away, between Claremore and Oologah. For information about the event call (918) 341-0719 or visit the website, www.willrogers.com. For pilots, the airport identifier is OK37. Admission is free but donations are accepted. Will and Wiley died August 15, 1935 in an Alaskan plane crash. In the last 20-plus years, pilots have been coming to the Birthplace Ranch airstrip to not only pay tribute to them, but to continue the celebration of the appreciation they shared for flying. Although Will never piloted a plane, he flew at every opportunity. He and Wiley were
on a fact-finding trip over Alaska when the plane crashed into icy water near Barrow. Will’s body was brought back to his hometown in 1944, where he is entombed with his family on the grounds of the Will Rogers Memorial Museum. A brief wreath-laying ceremony at the tomb, following a fly-over, will be at 9 a.m., Wednesday, August 15, on the 77th anniversary of the crash. The Will Rogers Memorial Museum in Claremore and the Birthplace Ranch and Park near Oologah are open 365 days a year from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Are You Sure You Have the Right Insurance? road,” he says. “You want coverage that protects your personal situation.” Cottom uses this example to illustrate his point: A man has purchased the most basic coverage, 25-50-25, on his vehicle. This means that the coverage caps at $25,000 per person for bodily injury, $50,000 for the entire accident, and $25,000 for property damage. One day, he collides with a Mercedes Benz, driven by a doctor who is transporting his wife and two children. Not only are two people in the other vehicle killed, but the man himself is badly injured and is in the hospital for six months. “Will that 25-50-25 insurance cover the devastating costs of this accident?” Cottom asks. “Who will pay the man’s salary while he is off work?”
Protection against the worst that could happen is the reason for procuring insurance in the first place, but ironically people often don’t consider the very worst that can happen when they actually make the purchase. “We all think we are invincible,” Cottom states. “A lot of consumers are uninformed when it comes to insurance and will gravitate toward the lowest price.” Basing a decision on the lowest price, however, will often leave huge holes in the safety net that insurance was designed to provide. That’s why Cottom encourages current and potential clients to call or visit Amber Helmuth, personal lines risk manager at RCI Insurance, to review and discuss an individualized plan. Amber specializes in personal service, helping to set
RCI Insurance apart from the “one size fits all” discount companies whose one-onone service ends once the policy has been sold. “Sometimes we actually can provide a person a great deal more insurance for the same price they were paying just through these discussions,” Cottom adds. He cites the example of a local businessman whose assets were worth around $2.5 million, but who was only carrying the basic 25-50-25 insurance. After discussion and review, RCI Insurance was able to provide the man over 10 times the coverage of his previous plan, combine his auto, home and other insurance policies, plus add a $1 million umbrella over all his assets – for about the same price he’d been paying for the basic insurance.
Does Your VW Need Service? VanZant, “and most services can be performed within 30 minutes to an hour.” Service Xpress is convenient, and it’s run by the friendly staff you’ve come to trust. There’s never a need for an appointment, and the technicians performing the work really know your Volkswagen. Assistant Service Manager Danny Smiley says, “Fast is good. Fast and right is much better!” Service Xpress is fast just like the quick lube places, and they’re convenient too. What sets them apart is Volkswagen Tulsa’s VW-certified technicians who use only genuine Volkswagen OEM parts. This way, you’re assured that your VW is being serviced properly, just as the factory recommends. Plus, they use only genuine VW oil that was in your vehicle when you bought it. You’ll never be fooled by aftermarket providers or products at Volkswagen Tulsa. “In addition to getting fast, convenient service performed by VW-certified techs using genuine Volkswagen
OEM parts,” said Lloyd, “we are competitively priced.” Service Xpress is there when you need it, with hours of operation being 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. In addition to convenience, you’ll receive the peace of mind that comes with knowing the job was done right the first time and every time. And each time you visit the Service Xpress Center, your vehicle will get an “all-over” checkup that includes the interior, windshield, wiper blades, battery terminals and cables, engine drive belts, hoses, headlights, hazards, and side and tail lamps. They will also check the shocks and struts, engine air filter, fluid levels, pollen filter, exhaust system, brakes CV boots and joints, and tread depth of each tire. You’ll leave confident that any immediate or pending issue with your car has been pointed out to you with a recommendation and time for getting it repaired. If you’re a VW owner, here’s
continued from page 1 How much insurance do you need? The only way to know for sure is to talk it over with an agent such as Amber Helmuth. “Come sit down or have a meaningful conversation over the phone,” Cottom says. “In order to maximize discounts, we will review your whole situation, give you total protection, and bring you into our circle of safety.”

continued from page 1 something that should interest you. How well do you know your used VW? There are many owners who are unaware that their Volkswagen may have free scheduled maintenance and service available, whether they are the first, second or third owner of the car. Lloyd says that if you will go to the website and send Volkswagen Tulsa your car’s model and VIN (Vehicle Identification Number), within two business days they will check it out and advise you if your car has been identified for a recall update, if any of the original warranty still remains, or if an extended maintenance warranty is available for it. It costs nothing to find out, and it could save you some money. “Half of VW owners don’t know that they have a maintenance policy on their vehicle,” says Lloyd. “Most competitors offer twoyear warranties as long as you own the car. Volkswagen Tulsa offers free scheduled maintenance for up to three years or 36,000 miles, whether you are the first or
Mill Creek Customers Wood Be Impressed customer expectations.” The team installs raw woods that may then be hand scraped, distressed or beveled to your specifications. They work in wood species native to Oklahoma including hickory, oak, walnut, American cherry, pine and knotty alder. Woods are available in a variety of widths, from 2 ¼ inches up to 12 inches, and all can be laid in patterns, including herringbone and basket weaves. “You dream it and we can make it happen,” said Jamie. Mill Creek Hardwood Floors also specializes in repairing and replacing wood floors damaged by water. When a wood flooring job is started, the floors are thoroughly cleaned before the tar is laid. Six mill plastic is then put in place, followed by 5/8-inch plywood and 15pound felt paper. The raw wood selected is laid in the pattern you have chosen, sanded, filled, sanded again, stained, and covered with a finish coat of polyurethane. Dust containment systems are used during the process of installing your new custom hardwood floor, and the rest of your home or business is shielded by plastic barriers taped in place around the perimeter of the work area. “We offer a variety of old world finishes and patterns that are great for busy families with kids or pets,” said Jamie. Mill Creek is a full-service floor covering store. They provide customers the ability to shop in one place for any flooring material desired. According to Jamie, wood floors have grown increasingly popular over the past several years and are commonly used in custom-built

Your Best Face PPut Forward This Fall Advanced Cosmetic Medicine provides cosmetic procedures that will have you looking great this season. By Sheryl Sowell younger. This is as close to immediate as you can get. Dr. SpoorBaker principally uses Juvederm in the lips to restore fullness and soften those unsightly, aging vertical lip lines. These form from pursing your lips with speech and activity, and also from loss of lip volume. Restoring lip volume takes years off your face and
The summer will soon be winding down, and as hard to believe as it is, fall will arrive soon after. This year has gone by so fast it’s hard to keep up. Did you start the year planning to do something for yourself? Now it’s already August and you haven’t done anything? Dr. Mallory Spoor-Baker at Advanced Cosmetic Medicine has just what you’re looking for. She offers cosmetic procedures to make you feel beautiful and refreshed, just in time for the upcoming fall season. According to Dr. SpoorBaker, Botox is still, without a doubt, the fastest fix for aging expression lines on your face. Deep lines between the eyes make you look tired or angry even when your face is still. It certainly gets worse with age. Within three days, Botox will make that area look flatter and smoother. People will think you look relaxed, and you will even feel more relaxed. With repeat Botox treatments in the first year, those lines can be gone. Dermal fillers such as Radiesse and Juvederm can make the area around your mouth and your entire face appear 10 years
creates youthful visual balance between the eyes and the mouth. This can last four to six months. For those “parentheses” lines around the mouth – nasolabial folds – Dr. Spoor-Baker recommends Radiesse for her patients. Radiesse is a firm, well-tolerated, calcium-based filler that provides structural support for the skin

www.ValueNews.com procedures can fix multiple problems. If you need more information, Advanced Cosmetic Medicine offers a complimentary consultation that allows Dr. Spoor-Baker to evaluate your concerns and pick the right treatment for you. It’s really not necessary to wait to the New Year to see a new you. It simply takes getting started and moving forward, fast or slow. It’s all about where you want to go and how fast you want to get there. Don’t let another three months go by before you do something – you might wake up and two years have gone by! Don’t forget that small steps done over a period of time can make a big difference, too. Babyfresh skin may be a long way away, but if you strive daily to slow down sun exposure, wear sunscreen and eat better, your skin will improve. “My daily consumption of a whole food concentrate of fruits and vegetables for the past 10+ years has made my skin at 49 much better. I know that keeping my skin covered while doing yard work or outside activities has saved me from huge amounts of sun damage,” adds Dr. Spoor-Baker. around the mouth. This area sags over time. She explains to her patients that fillers are for the topography of the face. If you have hills and deep valleys, then fillers go under the valleys to soften the transitions of the hills. The overall effect is a plumper, firmer, more youthful appearance. Radiesse in the nasolabial folds can last up to 12 months. IPL/limelight laser treatments can improve a wide range of issues on aging faces. Most people over 35 have sun damage – unfortunate, but true. Sun damage can mean brown spots, red pigment or veins, dilated pores, and uneven texture. IPL/limelight treatments reduce red and brown pigments, and help to even out texture and pores as well. “It usually takes more than one treatment, but if you have substantial pigment issues, even one treatment can be dramatic. I usually recommend a minimum of three treatments,” says Dr. Spoor-Baker. The Pearl laser is a serious approach to aging skin. This is a type of “fractional” resurfacing laser which removes a layer of surface skin to promote smoothness and generate a high degree of collagen remodeling. Pearl treatments can truly turn back the age clock. Pearl resurfacing gives you the dramatic change of highgrade chemical peels with the photo-rejuvenating effects of a laser, with a greater degree of specificity and safety. Any one of these procedures can make a significant, dramatic and fast improvement to aging and sun-damaged skin. Combining two or more

CCuts for Kids Clary Sage College and Oklahoma Technical College will provide area students free haircuts August 8-9 and 15-16. By Tara Waugh Backpacks – check. New clothes and uniforms – check. Paper and pencils – check. These are just a few items that parents think about on their looming back-toschool lists. Getting the kids ready to go back to school can be a costly time for parents and guardians. One thing they don’t have to worry about is shelling out cash for a new back-to-school haircut. Clary Sage College and Oklahoma Technical College, branches of Community Care College, are giving back to the community by holding their 4th annual Cuts for Kids event. This exciting event offers free haircuts to school age children in the Tulsa metro area. Cuts for Kids will be held on August 8 and 9 from 9:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. at Clary Sage College, located at 3131 S. Sheridan, and on August 15 and 16 from 9:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. at Oklahoma Technical College, located at 4444 S. Sheridan. Last year, this event made over 750 Tulsa students happy, and they are expecting an even bigger turnout this year. While being supervised by master educators, cosmetology students
of Clary Sage College (CSC) and barber students of Oklahoma Technical College (OTC) get real-world experience and get to practice their acquired skills while giving back to the Tulsa community. Teresa Knox, founder and CEO of Community Care College, Clary Sage College, and Oklahoma Technical College, mentions how alumni even come back to volunteer with this event since this is usually the college students’ favorite community event to participate in. Students of CSC and OTC are giving to the children of Tulsa the confidence and good looks to start the new school year off on the right foot. According to Teresa, “The atmosphere of Cuts for Kids is fun, energized, and professional. Our students are excited to practice their technical skills as well as their soft skills for customer service.” Both campuses are trendy in their appearance, promote health and wellness, and emulate the pure artistry that goes on behind their doors. Teresa says, “Our students do an incredible job.” Since this is a community-driven function that
focuses on the technical skills and the customer service skills of their superiorly trained students, parents and Tulsa metro students will be pleased with their experience and results. Appointments are not necessary, but parents are welcome to call to see about the wait time since it can get busy. No styling is done during this time. So if parents and children are looking for styling or flat ironing, it cannot be done at the same time as the free haircut. However, they are giving to parents a ten dollar voucher, Clary Cash, to be used towards the many services that Clary Sage offers, like hair care, skin care, nail care, or massage – another perfect back-to-school treat for the kids’ new looks. Or better yet, parents, use the voucher for the much needed massage after all the back-toschool frenzy. Parents, rest assured that your children will be put in the most capable hands. Clary Sage College and Oklahoma Technical College are licensed and accredited institutions offering various diploma and degree programs. CSC offers programs

in barista, cosmetology, esthetics, fashion design, interior design, makeup artistry, massage therapy, nail technology, and master instructor. Additionally, OTC offers programs in automotive and welding technology and barbering. “Our schools have an unwavering commitment to our students, employees, community, charities that we support, and our vendors,” Teresa proudly states. Driven by rock-solid core values, the colleges’ goals are to make the world a better place, starting with the Tulsa community, and what better way to help the Tulsa
community than by lessening the burden of back-to-school costs for parents and families and by infusing Tulsa’s youth with self confidence for the impending school year, no matter what the family’s income is.

Do you remember playing the 20 questions game in middle school and jr. high? I do. It was a game similar to Truth or Dare without the dare part. The objective of the game was to get participants to focus and answer questions that they may not want to admit. It was a game designed to get to know yourself and your friends (or potential girlfriend/boyfriend) better. The following are 20 financial questions I ask in my office every day. You would be surprised at how many truly don’t know the answers. Go ahead….See if you can answer them. I dare you! 1) How much money do you bring home each month? Your spouse?
Licensed by OBPVS. All work performed by supervised fashion design students.

18) When do you plan to retire? 19) What do you plan to do in retirement? Is that what your spouse wants to do too? 20) Will you have enough money? How do you know?
10) How much do you save each month? 11) Do you max out your 401k? 12) If not, why not?
2) How much money do you spend each month? 3) Where does it go? 4) Where do you want it to go? 5) How much debt do you have? 6) What are the interest rates on your mortgage, vehicle, credit cards? 7) What is important to you about money? 8) Are you rich? (hint: trick question)
LIKE US ON FACEBOOK!
17) Why haven’t you already done it?
9) What does rich mean to you?
13) What is your strategy (or advisor’s strategy) for handling market volatility? 14) If I had told you 6 months ago that the stock market would be undervalued, would you have invested more, less, or pulled your money out? 15) Who is in “control” of the money at your house? If you are not, do you know the answers to these questions? You should. 16) What’s the one thing you could do today to start getting rich? (not robbing a bank, LOL)
Hopefully these questions are food for thought. May they ruffle your feathers and get you off that bump on the log. Who you trust matters. Thank you for reading my article. I am much obliged. Financial challenges are rampant these days. Some of them are avoidable. I have helped thousands of readers navigate these situations and lead richer lives. Don’t Wait to Schedule Non-Emergency Surgery
Roberta Wagle at the Lap-Band® Center of Oklahoma at Pinnacle Specialty Hospital advises patients to begin the process of scheduling surgery now, rather than waiting for the end of the year. By Sheryl Sowell Roberta Wagle, bariatric coordinator at the Lap-Band® Center of Oklahoma at Pinnacle Specialty Hospital, sees it all the time: patients waiting until the end of the year to move forward with their non-emergency or elective surgery. “Many people meet their insurance deductible in October and think they can wait until then to schedule their non-emergency surgery,” says Roberta. “What most don’t realize is how long the insurance process actually takes – it’s often two to three months. If someone decides they would like to have the Lap-Band® procedure done or need to schedule gall bladder surgery, they really need to begin the process in August.” The insurance process is lengthy for any non-emergency procedure, especially the Lap-Band® surgery, as insurance companies require that the surgery is proven to be a medical necessity. “Patients often think they can simply meet with the surgeon and set the surgery date. For some non-emergency surgeries, and the Lap-Band® procedure in particular, several steps must be taken,” Roberta
explains. “Patients first attend an educational seminar. Then they have a personal consultation with the surgeon. Next, the patient must meet with their primary care physician, undergo a dietary consultation as well as a psychological evaluation, and complete any other preliminary work that must be taken care of in order for the insurance company to have a complete letter of medical predetermination for the surgery.” When you think about it, it makes sense that the process takes so long. It can take a week or two to schedule an appointment with the surgeon, another week or two to get in to see your primary care physician, an additional week to have the psychological evaluation scheduled – and so on. “In addition, the surgery itself has to work with your own schedule and the surgeon’s schedule,” says Roberta. After the predetermination letter has been mailed, it often takes the insurance company 30 to 45 days to reply. “If you’re interested in Lap-Band® surgery, or if you have any other non-emergency medical situation
you want to take care of, such as gall bladder, cataract, breast reduction, or joint surgery, we strongly advise beginning the process now.” If you initially visit with the surgeon in August, the surgery itself can still be scheduled for November or December. “Basically, the insurance process takes a lot longer than people realize. If you know you are going to meet your deductible in October, the month of August is when you need to start the process of proving medical necessity to your insurance company,” adds Roberta. Dr. Ladd Adkins of the Lap-Band® Center of Oklahoma offers exclusively the Lap-Band® by Allergan to people who are medically classified as morbidly obese. The Lap-Band® Adjustable Gastric Banding System is the only FDA-approved gastric banding system for patients who are at least 30 pounds overweight, with a BMI of at least 30 and one or more obesity-related comorbid conditions, including coronary artery disease, type II diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea and
Roberta Wagle, bariatric coordinator at the Lap-Band® Center of Oklahoma at Pinnacle Specialty Hospital. osteoarthritis. Those with the greatest success pay close attention to the foods they eat and exercise regularly, and typical weight loss is one to two pounds a week. Some foods are more difficult to digest than others, such as breads and starches. As Dr. Adkins explains, “The system actually forces people to make healthier food choices. But that’s what they need to turn their lives around.” The next free Lap-Band® educational seminars will be held at 7 p.m. August 9 and September 13 and 27. Call (918) 392-2806 to reserve your spot.
