ASK THE MONEY MAVEN STRAIGHT-FORWARD, NO-NONSENSE TALK ABOUT YOUR MONEY
Which Money Personality Are You? BY MELANIE HASTYGRANT Money is a funny thing. Folks will tell you just about anything about themselves before they will talk about money. It is such a taboo topic that many parents don’t even talk about it with their children. Why is that? Is the topic really that delicate and intimate that it needs to be avoided? Will Smith said it best when he stated, “Too many people spend money they haven’t earned, to buy things they don’t want, to impress people they don’t like.” As sure as the sky is blue, money is a part of life. It has many personalities; here are a few! The High Roller – This is the type that is all in, no holding back. They believe that the bigger the risk, the better. They may win the jackpot, or they may go home with their tail between their legs. The thrill of the chase is the driving force behind this money personality. The Bean Counter – This person saves for a rainy day. They are bargain hunters. Bean Counters refuse to pay full price for clothing, food, or entertainment. They are sometimes perceived as a cheapskate. These folks are very resourceful. However, sometimes they miss out on the fun of living everyday life.
things. Money isn’t something to be afraid of. Being aware of your finances isn’t frightening. If you check regularly, they won’t be such a shock at the end of the month.
The Penny Priest – This group tends to have of strong religious or political ties in regards to their finances. They have been led to believe that money is the root of all evil. Good, bad or indifferent, money is a way to obtain basic necessities, and support charitable causes. The Budget Buster – These are the spenders of the group. They believe money is earned to be spent. Budget Busters have a spend first, think later mentality. Earning and spending money is part of life. Living above your means shouldn’t be! You don’t need to keep up with The Joneses. That is a slippery slope. The Duck and Cover – This money personality doesn’t want anything to do with finances. They ignore they even exist. Either they don’t feel at ease talking about the subject, or they feel as though their time is better spent on other

Ineviseason for extended daylight tably, many young athletes will and outdoor activity is also suffer an injury that requires the season for broken bones. medical attention. According Increased physical activity leads to the American Academy of to increased likelihood of bone By Sheryl Sowell
Dr. Brad Lawson and his assistant, Matt. Dr. Lawson is a general orthopedic surgeon who sees surgical and nonsurgical injuries of the elbow, hip, knee, foot, shoulder, ankle, wrist and sports medicine. fractures and breaks. Pediatrics, nearly 3.5 million Warm spring and summer sports related injuries occur each year in the United States days mean many children are heading outdoors to participate to children younger than age in their favorite sport. The 15, with fractures among the
most common. When that occurs, children are often referred to an orthopedic specialist for treatment. Parents, take note: The signs and symptoms of a fracture may include swelling (most common), fever and redness. Of course, children are not the only ones to suffer from fractures. The average adult will sustain two fractures over a lifetime, according to a survey by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. About 6.3 million fractures occur each year, with 40 percent at home, inside or outside. Broken bones generate 3.5 million annual visits to the emergency room, and 57 percent of these fractures belong to people 65 plus. Brad Lawson, M.D., of Central States Orthopedics, explains, “Bones are more pliable when you are younger and get more brittle as you age. Children often engage in riskier behavior (climbing, jumping from unsafe heights, etc.), resulting in falls and similar accidents. This causes more frequent fractures. And when they get into middle and senior high schools, they play sports.”
He continues, “Orthopedic surgeons do more than just practice on the elderly and athletes, however. People need orthopedic doctors for a wide variety of ailments. We treat bones, joints, nerves, tendons, and even the skin.” Dr. Lawson provides hand, foot and ankle care; total joint care; general orthopedics and sports medicine care. He offers non-surgical treatment options such as prescribed medications, physical therapy, injections, splinting, casting and bracing. He can also provide surgical treatment options, such as carpal tunnel surgery, fracture fixation, arthroscopic surgery, ligament repair and reconstruction, and joint replacement surgeries. The majority of patients he sees on a weekly basis are people who have fractures of the arm, leg, foot, ankle, wrist, elbow, hand, forearm and shoulder. Previously injured? You may want to get his evaluation on a previous injury for which you never received proper treatment. There are many individuals who have had a minor injury, such as twisting an ankle or slipping, not realizing
Page 5
that they have actually broken a bone in their foot. It does happen, and they do not realize it until years later. If surgery is needed, Dr. Lawson is available at Bailey Medical Center (Owasso), Hillcrest Hospital South (91st and Hwy. 169), St. Francis Hospital South (91st and Hwy. 169), and Oklahoma Surgical Hospital (81st and Lewis). Quite often, Dr. Lawson meets new patients in emergency rooms at Bailey Medical Center and St. Francis Hospital South. If you want the skilled services of Dr. Lawson when you arrive in the ER, be sure and ask for him to be your orthopedic doctor. Dr. Lawson has provided service and sports medicine care in the Owasso, Tulsa, Broken Arrow, Claremore and Collinsville areas for the last several years. The doctor began his career in the U.S. Air Force, serving both as a general medical officer and as an orthopedic surgeon for 16 years. He lives in Owasso with his wife, Julie, and their four children.

SSip, Savor & Shop Taste of Claremore returns to Downtown April 30. By Sheryl Sowell The always-popular Sip, Savor & Shop: Taste of Claremore returns to downtown Claremore on April 30, offering an opportunity to sample local fare while enjoying the shopping offered in the downtown district. The three-hour food and shopping stroll begins at 6 p.m. and spans the three blocks of downtown along Will Rogers Boulevard. Tickets are $12 in advance or $15 on the day-of while children five years and younger sampling off an adult’s plate are free. Tickets will go on sale in the participating downtown stores mid-April. In addition to the food and shopping, the evening will feature a variety of sidewalk entertainment by talented local musicians. “We are really excited about the Taste of Claremore this year,” said Jessica Jackson, Claremore Main Street Executive Director. “It is a perfect event to showcase the great shopping opportunities downtown as well as the wonderful dining options and local talent we have here in Claremore. It’s truly an event for all the senses!”
In 2015, more than 25 local restaurants and wineries set up inside various downtown stores and businesses, showcasing samples to the hundreds of people sipping, savoring and shopping.
Jeannie Smith, owner of The Grapevine in downtown Claremore, is a member of the event’s planning committee and said this event is one of her favorites downtown has to offer.
“It brings the community together in a fun and relaxing family atmosphere, all while discovering what our downtown has to offer,” Smith said. Sip, Savor & Shop: Taste of

Claremore is family-friendly, but also a great date night option or a fun girls’ night activity, said Dell Davis, President and CEO of the Claremore Area Chamber of Commerce. “We love any occasion to bring the musicians from the area out to show off the talent we have right here in Rogers County,” Davis said. “This is just a great event for families, couples or anyone who loves Claremore and all it has to offer.” Sip, Savor & Shop: Taste of Claremore is hosted by Claremore Main Street and the Claremore Area Chamber of Commerce, both of which are non-profit organizations in town. Proceeds of the event go to support the organization’s individual missions. It is sponsored by the City of Claremore, moreClaremore.com and RCB Bank. The annual Rogers County Training Center Golf Classic hosted by BancFirst assists individuals with developmental and physical disabilities in obtaining meaningful work. The tournament will be Friday, May 6 at Heritage Hills Golf Course.
By Sheryl Sowell For over five decades, the Rogers County Training Center (RCTC) has assisted individuals with developmental and physical disabilities to find independence and a meaningful way of life through vocational training and job placement services, while also providing area businesses with valuable labor, either on a permanent or intermittent basis. The Rogers County Training Center is a subsidiary of Home of Hope, which provides a broad range of services to over 200 individuals in a six-county area spanning two states. Dr. Ralph Richardson, a psychologist and chief executive officer of Home of Hope, says, “These men and women with developmental disabilities deserve the same opportunities we all want in life, including a home, relationships, and meaningful work, but they need some degree of support to make it possible.” To support these individuals, BancFirst will host the 31st annual Golf Classic for Rogers County Training Center on Friday, May 6 at the Heritage Hills Golf Course in Claremore. The Most Dangerous Leftovers: Unused Medications In conjunction with National Rx Take Back Days, Rogers County Volunteers for Youth is hosting Prescription Take-Back events in Foyil and Oologah. Several locations are available in Rogers County for medication drop off anytime. By Sheryl Sowell Fifty-two people die from opioid pain medications every day in the United States. Studies have shown that the Unites States, with less than 5% of the world’s population, consumes 80% of the global supply of opioid drugs. Oklahoma prescribes more prescription pain killers than most states, and, is one of 12 states that saw its youth drug overdose death rate triple over the past 10 years. Most drug overdose deaths in Oklahoma involve at least one prescription drug. Medicines in the home are a leading cause of accidental poisoning. Over half of teens abusing medicines get them from a family member or friend, often straight from the medicine cabinet. From 2010-2014, 63 Rogers County residents died from prescription pain medications, and an additional 83 people suffered non-fatal overdoses from the same
medications. It’s a great time to clean out your medicine cabinet! “Prescription drug abuse is a huge problem, and this is a great opportunity for all of us to help reduce the threat,” says Amy Graham, Project Director for Cherokee Nations Partnership for Success funding in Rogers County. Protect our kids and families by properly disposing of your unwanted and expired medicines and make your home safe from drug theft and abuse. In conjunction with National Rx Take Back Days sponsored by the Drug Enforcement Agency, Rogers County Volunteers for Youth is hosting Prescription Take-Back events in Foyil and Oologah. The Foyil event will be Tuesday, April 19 from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. at the Foyil Community Center. The first 50 people to drop medicines will receive a $10 gift card. The Oologah event will be Saturday, April 23 from
9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the corner of Highways 88 and 169. The first 50 people to drop medicines will receive a $10 gift card. Take unneeded and unused medications to one of these Rogers County sites anytime: Rogers County Sheriff Department, Claremore Police Department, Catoosa Police Department, Inola Police Department and Chelsea Police Department.

The Best Money Management Habit Ever
“Financially Fit” is a column published by RCB Bank to help you gain knowledge on all things financial. Fitness guides – RCB Bank professionals in the field – offer ideas to help you strengthen your money sense, customize savings training, and provide quick and easy action plans to start whipping your money into shape.
By Jocelyn Wood Who wants to save more money? To do so, we have to spend less, which can be accomplished in a number of ways. • Avoid impulse shopping. • Eliminate unwanted expenses, e.g., late charges, convenience fees. • Set up automatic money transfers to a savings account. But when we get down to the nitty-gritty of daily life, watching our spending habits can get lost in the moment. Just this week, I made three trips to my local superstore in a 72-hour period. Did I need to? At the time, I could justify each urgent need. Looking at my bank account balance, now I’m not so sure each trip was an absolute necessity. So how do we fix our psychological need versus want versus necessity battle that keeps chipping away at our finances? We start by using the best money management tool ever – the checkbook register (or its contemporary electronic clone). Tracking your money is the most important habit to develop. It takes a little time, but the benefit is financially rewarding. Here are
four reasons, from bankers who swear by their checkbook registers, why you should take a closer look at your daily finances. Reason No. 1. – Help curb impulse shopping and recognize wasteful spending habits. “You can make plans and budgets, but they don’t always go as you intend,” said Wayne Webster, VP, Commercial Loans, RCB Bank. “Your checkbook register offers an honest look at your spending history. For instance, you may not realize you’re spending $50 a month at the coffee shop. To see it written down, right there, may be motivation to cut back. Anytime I’m about to spend money, I look at my register and know exactly where I stand.” Reason No. 2 – Know your actual account balance. “There are a lot of ways to interact with your checking account – debit cards, ATM withdrawals, checks, auto debits and online bill pay,” said Shelly Fields, Retail Coordinator, RCB Bank. “My register is the only way to keep an accurate balance at any given time.” “It takes a matter of seconds to write down my expenses in my
register before I leave the store,” added Webster. “Online and text banking don’t know if I wrote a check yesterday, or have an auto debit scheduled for next week. If I’m just spending and not tracking, and not comparing it with my budget, I may run into trouble.” Reason No. 3 – Fraud, mistakes, fees and unwanted expenses can slip through the cracks if you don’t stay involved in your finances. “You could be a victim of fraud, or a simple mistake can happen at any given time,” said Brenda Romesburg, Customer Service Rep, RCB Bank. “Scammers can alter checks or run debit cards for more than requested. Keeping a close eye on your account and keeping your own personal ledger can help prevent you from losing money.” Reason No. 4 – Your financial footprint is in your credit report. “The harsh reality is that how you manage your money is part of your credit history,” said Richard Jackson, Mortgage Loan Closer, RCB Bank. “It can take as little as 15 minutes a week to compare your checkbook register with your
online banking account so you can stay on top of your finances.” Getting started is easy. Pick up a checkbook register from your bank, download a money register app or create your own register with a notepad. Each day, enter all your money transactions. Using a checkbook register keeps Evette Add a little note Kelley, of Tulsa, in control of her finances. to help you clarify your expenses. Review your register with your bank statement For more information, contact each month and double check errors. Taking this step will put RCB Bank you on track to improving your financial well-being. 855-BANK-RCB Opinions expressed above are www.RCBbank.com the personal opinions of the author and persons interviewed and meant www.ValueNews.com for generic illustration purposes only. an CCreate Outdoor Oasis Outdoor Creations specializes in professional styled outdoor living. By Duane Blankenship Jake Nicks established Outdoor Creations three years ago. He and his team of experts consider
the outside of your home just as important as its interior. Outdoor Creations provides large pool houses, hardscaping, roofing, French drains, and Jake’s favorite,
complete backyard renovations for outdoor living at its finest. Outdoor Creations also builds quality homes, remodels condos and apartments, and flips homes. Jake spent his youth in Las Vegas, where his father was a construction project manager. Jake grew up working with his father and eventually came to Broken Arrow to attend Rhema Bible College. Upon graduation, he began doing what he had enjoyed all his life, construction and remodeling. Jake soon found that customers were asking him to do a variety of projects and decided that starting his own business was a natural progression. Jake and the Outdoor Creations team provide a full range of superior services at competitive rates to residents of greater Tulsa

and beyond. “Our company has grown from a two-person operation to a full staff of professionals that are able to meet your every landscaping and remodeling need,” says Jake. “By remaining consistently dedicated to performing at the highest standards, we continue to build long-term relationships with our clients.” The team’s reputation for customer satisfaction has made Outdoor Creations a household name in their industry. All of Jake’s employees are background checked, and the company is fully insured. Outdoor Creations has a perfect rating with BBB and Angie’s List. “We don’t farm out projects to independent contractors, and our customers are assured they will receive the highest standard of products and services whenever they hire us to do a project.” Although Outdoor Creations does not perform plumbing or electrical requirements, Jake recommends companies specializing in these areas whenever they are needed on a project. This is explained at the

onset of a project, and you will be invoiced directly by the company doing the service. When you’re ready to begin remodeling or expanding your outdoor living experience, the Outdoor Creations team will consult with you to determine your exact needs for improving your home’s living space, whether inside or outside. You’ll be provided expert advice, creative ideas and an estimate to complete the project. When the job is finished and meets or exceeds your expectations, you’ll pay the amount agreed upon – never more than the amount presented in the estimate. If you’re thinking of making an idea happen – a pool, patio, pergola, fireplace or fire pit – Outdoor Creations will visit with you and present a free, three-dimensional design for you to consider for your backyard. been with the company 24 years. A mechanic for ten years, Tony later became a heavy equipment specialist while working in the Rogers County coal mines. He received foundational diesel training working with the company’s Caterpillar mechanic. In 1992, Tony responded to a newspaper ad for a diesel mechanic with Tulsa New Holland. “I thought it might be a good place to work for two or three years, and I’m still here!” Travis McCrate added, “Tony has a cult following. His customers always ask for him.” Kelly Umphrey said, “Tony is a mechanical genius. There’s nothing he can’t fix. His tool collection is probably worth more than my house, and he frequently builds his own specialty tools.” Kelly and Travis agreed that Tony rarely has a bad day. He is dependable, calm and level-headed, but both acknowledged that he does have a darker side – Tony is a prankster. With his great sense of humor, Tony relishes the opportunity to “get” fellow employees and then innocently shrug his shoulders when asked if he “knows anything” about a particular prank. There are three things Tony is adamant
about: Keep a clean work bay. Keep the shop floor dry and free of oil. If you should gain permission to borrow a tool and don’t return it in a timely fashion, beware… you are in trouble. Tulsa New Holland has an A+ rating with the Tulsa Better Business Bureau. “Without great service support,” says Kelly, “there wouldn’t be any repeat sales.” So, whether you’re mowing your yard, maintaining an acreage or baling hay, Tulsa New Holland wants to be your “Partner For Life.”

Home & Garden Show Coming Soon continued from page 1 home improvement, windows and window replacement, heating and air, bug extermination, handyman services, satellite dishes, roofing, commercial and residential remodeling, insurance and more. Be sure to check out the Rogers County Master Gardeners’ booth, which will feature an interactive monarch butterfly exhibit, plants on display, as well as question and answer sessions with the Master Gardeners. Also, stop by J&T Service Company’s booth to enter into a drawing to win a storm shelter. The storm shelter will be on display as the public enters the Expo Center, and the drawing will be held Sunday afternoon. Two stages will host informational seminars by local experts on a variety of topical subjects, including flood insurance, earthquake insurance, buying a storm shelter and reverse mort-
gages. “Whether or not they should choose a reverse mortgage is a question many seniors currently face. Jim Blythe with BOK Mortgage will host seminars throughout the weekend explaining the pros and cons of reverse mortgages,” says Tanya Andrews, Director of Claremore Expo & Tourism Development. “Additional seminars will include kitchen remodeling, how to hire the right contractor for your home projects, redoing bathrooms on a budget, antique restoration and appraisals, and gardening topics such as kitchen herb gardens.” Allen Storjohann, who hosts the KRMG Gardening Show on Saturday mornings from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., will be on hand to answer your gardening questions from 2 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 16. The children’s area will be sponsored by Destiny Life Church and will feature fun activities for the kiddos, including bouncy house inflatables. “In the past,
continued from page 1 return home. Make a blackberry pie, whip up a blueberry smoothie, or can your own strawberry jam – the possibilities are endless. “We are on a peaceful patch of land easily accessible from Highway 412,” said owner Gwen Gay. “If the Good Lord permits, strawberries may be ready late April, the blueberries should be available late May through early July, and the blackberries ready June through early August.” The farm is prepared to accommodate visitors, with tables and chairs located near the picking area, folding seats available for a $1 rental fee to use while picking, free bottled water, and portable toilets. Huldy’s welcomes birthday parties and family reunions, and customers are always welcome to bring their own picnic lunches and snacks. Huldy’s Farm has a unique history. Marty Johnson grew up on the land where the farm is located, at the corner of 4195 Road and 590 Road. Marty retired as a Tulsa Police Officer and was working in the Human Resources Department at the City of Tulsa, and his wife, Gwen, was a Human Resources Director at Kaiser-Francis Oil Company. As Marty and Gwen were approaching retirement, Gwen began thinking about the possibility of having a blueberry farm, as her uncle had a small farm in Louisiana. The couple jumped into the venture and began preparing the land in the summer of 2005. However, only a few short months later, Marty was diagnosed with metastatic melanoma to the brain. Gwen and their daughter, Erin, dropped everything to take care of Marty, who passed away in May 2007. About a year later, Gwen and Erin met for lunch, and Gwen asked Erin what she thought about restarting the blueberry farm idea. Erin was supportive, and the berry farm journey was reignited. Erin chose the name for the berry farm. Her grandparents had owned a 1955 Chevy Truck named Huldy – a nickname for a woman prophetess briefly mentioned in the Bible named Huldah who was strong in her faith in God. In March 2010, again with the
help of Erin, friends, neighbors, and Gwen’s Sunday School Class, the first patch of blueberries were planted. In 2011, Gwen met and married Gerald Gay, and in the following years, they added blackberries and strawberries to the farm. Life threw another curve to the family in March of 2014, when Gwen was diagnosed with Stage 3 Breast Cancer. Though she had a mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiation during the remainder of the year, she was determined to keep the berry farm going. In addition to helping Gerald take care of Gwen, Erin helped pick berries for customers and ran the “berry hut,” where customers pick up buckets for picking, return to pay for their berries and have them packaged for taking home. “I am so grateful for all of the help by my family, friends, and employees during my recovery. The farm would not have succeeded without them,” she said. Huldy’s Farm will have booths at the Tulsa Farmers Markets this season: Wednesdays at the Brookside Market at 41st and Peoria (Whole Foods parking lot) and Saturdays at the Cherry Street Market at 15th and Peoria. You can also find Huldy’s on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest. When the berries are ready for picking, Huldy’s Farm will be open Mondays through Saturdays, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Appointments may be scheduled for other times. Please call Gwen before coming to confirm the farm is open and the berries are available.

fundraiser will go toward the restoration and preservation of the Belvidere Mansion, as well as other Rogers County Historical Society projects. The RCHS also supports the Totem Pole Park. Don’t wait until the Prohibition Party, however, to check out this historical mansion. The tea room is open Tuesday through Saturday for lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. You’ll find salads, sandwiches, soups and seasonal specials, as well as desserts and specialty teas on the menu. You can also take a tour or shop in the gift shop from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m., where you’ll find competitively-priced merchandise from over 50 different vendors, as well as unique hand-picked vintage and antique items. The Belvidere also provides rentals for private parties, including weddings, receptions, bridal and baby showers, family reunions and special event destinations.
The Belvidere Mansion will host a Prohibition Party play written by Mark Ogle on April 15 and 16. By Sheryl Sowell
Prohibition was the legal prevention of the manufacture, sale and transportation of alcoholic beverages in the United States and lasted from 1920 to 1933. Although the temperance movement, which promoted moderation or complete abstinence in the use of liquor, was widely supported and succeeded in bringing about this legislation, millions of Americans were willing to drink liquor illegally, giving rise to bootlegging (the illegal production and sale of liquor) and speakeasies (illegal, secretive drinking establishments), both of which were capitalized upon by organized crime. On April 15 and 16, the Belvidere Mansion will transport guests back to this exciting era of wild shenanigans at “An Evening of Intrigue: Prohibition Party.” The interactive play, written by Mark Ogle and presented
by Dan Huey and Jessica Ammons, will feature “a vaudeville theme,” according to Elise Gabriel, vice president of the Rogers County Historical Society. “Everyone is encouraged to dress up and come out for a fun evening of intrigue and a delicious dinner. One thing that will be different from previous murder mystery dinner theater events is that instead of tables spread throughout the ballroom, chairs will be arranged around the perimeter of the room, and all of the action will be going on in the center of the ballroom. ” Ammons is an Emmy award winner for her contribution on a documentary for public television, and Ogle has written more than 30 plays, which have been produced in several countries and translated into multiple languages. Dan Huey has both acted in and

directed several previous Ogle plays. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., dinner begins at 6 and the play begins shortly after. The evening’s menu includes prime rib, sides, dessert and complimentary
wine. Tickets for the dinner and play are $50 and tend to sell out at each event, so make your reservations early. Call Patrick Deaver at (918) 688-0651 to reserve your tickets. All proceeds from this
