You Can Go Home Again SUMMIT Physical Therapy seeks to encourage young people back to live and work in Claremore.

By Carol Beck-Round Seven employees at Claremore’s SUMMIT Physical Therapy have two things in common: they’re all Claremore High School graduates, and each feels blessed to be back living and working in their hometown. Bret McGuire, DPT and co-owner of SUMMIT, returned to Claremore in 1992 after accepting a job offer from a friend. “I saw an opportunity to see patients from my home community and build a career working in home health and outpatient physical therapy.” A few years later, McGuire and Sean Cox saw an opportunity to impact Rogers County citizens by bringing an expanded (continued on page 26)

For mother and son Kim and Colton Marcotte, “making coffee for the town that loves to drink it” is the reason they are now the new co-owners of Cappuccino Corner in Claremore. Located at 900 E. Will Rogers Blvd, the popular coffee shop changed hands in mid-October. A staple in east Claremore for nine years, you’ll still find a wonderful atmosphere to meet for breakfast, lunch or just a cup of coffee with friends. Kim, who had managed a

Starbucks for almost two years, brings her knowledge and experience to Cappuccino Corner. “Not much has changed as far as the menu,” she adds. Although the menu has been simplified, you’ll still find top-sellers available for breakfast and lunch. “Instead of a buildyour-own, we offer sandwich specials,” she says. The chicken salad – using the same recipe as the previous owner – is still a popular seller. “We also offer a Chicken Chipotle sandwich that (continued on page 26)

ASK THE MONEY MAVEN STRAIGHT-FORWARD, NO-NONSENSE TALK ABOUT YOUR MONEY

Diamonds May Be a Girl’s Best Friend But… Viagra demands surge the week before Valentine’s. BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT

Valentine’s Day should be a burst of cheer amid some of the recent craziness in the markets. The National Retail Federation’s spending survey found that Americans spent $17 billion on Valentine’s Day in 2014. That’s a lot of money, folks! It is estimated that consumers spent approximately $133.91 on average on their chosen Valentine. Men reported spending twice as much as women. As the old saying goes…Roses are red, violets are blue…There were an estimated 257 million roses produced last year on this special day, and Valentine’s Day is reported to be the number one holiday for florists. In keeping with the idea that diamonds are, indeed, a girl’s best friend…There are over 27,484 jewelry stores in the United States, so there is plenty of bling to go around for you guys looking to spend the big bucks. According to Neilsen, Americans purchased over 58 million pounds of chocolate during the days leading up to February 14th in 2014. That’s approximately $345 million worth of chocolaty goodness.

How’s that for a sweet tooth? And lastly, as reported by the Huffington Post, 13 million couples become engaged each year, and approximately 6 million of those are proposed or asked on Valentine’s Day. What a romantic day it is! But that’s not all. According to condom maker Durex, condom sales are about 25% higher around Valentine’s Day. Hmmmm… And statisticbrain.com reports that more at-home pregnancy tests are sold in March than in any other month. Kind of makes you wonder if more condoms should have been purchased, doesn’t it? It is estimated that approximately 11,000 children

were conceived on Valentine’s Day in 2014. Finally, in a study reported in Men’s Health/NBC News there were some 199,450 prescriptions logged for Viagra during the week of February 5th. Overall, the week before Valentine’s Day is among the top weeks of the year for demand for all male sex-enhancing drugs, representing about 2.9 million doses. That’s nearly 100,000 more pills and injections – and potential love connections – than in an average week, according to the study. So if 2015 is anything like 2014, “Love IS good for the economy.” If you’re looking for investment ideas, you might choose them accordingly. VVaricose Veins Hurt More Than Vanity Vascular & Vein Laser Center offers VenaCure for painful, unsightly varicose veins.

By Carol Beck-Round You don’t need to drive to Tulsa to take care of those unsightly, painful varicose veins. For over 12 years, the Vascular & Vein Laser Center in Claremore has been offering state-of-the-art laser treatment to help patients become painfree and glad to expose their legs again, all with very little downtime. Dr. Kyle Hrdlicka, general vascular and endovascular surgeon, and his staff are dedicated to giving their patients the highest quality care in a comfortable, pleasant environment. Keeping up with the latest technology, Dr. Hrdlicka says the VenaCure EVLT is the numberone physician choice for laser vein treatment and is only one of many in his arsenal of minimally-invasive procedures to help treat varicose veins. “With the VenaCure,” says Dr. Hrdlicka, “targeted laser energy is used to seal the vein shut and help you look better and feel better fast because it uses different wavelengths of light to treat the varicose veins. There is also less bruising and pain involved with this procedure, which also gives immediate relief and minimal to no scarring.” What causes varicose veins? According to Dr. Hrdlicka, there can be several contributing factors, including genetics and heredity.

Others include pregnancy, obesity and standing for exceptionally long periods. Blood is allowed to pool in the leg veins, rather than being pumped back up into the body. Varicose veins can cause pain and heaviness in the legs, edema, burning and stinging, aching and throbbing. A graduate of Claremore

High School and the OU College of Pharmacy, Dr. Hrdlicka received his medical degree from the OSU College of Osteopathic Medicine in Tulsa before completing an internship, a residency in general surgery, and a fellowship in vascular surgery at Ohio University Doctors Hospital in Columbus. In addition, he completed a sub-

fellowship in endovascular surgery at the Arizona Heart Institute in Phoenix. With the FDA approved VenaCure EVLT, Dr. Hrdlicka is committed to bringing his patients the results they desire with no general anesthesia and less than one hour in the office. “The procedure is easy to perform and gets patients

back on their feet in approximately 45 minutes,” he adds. After the procedure, patients can walk out of the office without assistance. “It depends on the person as to how soon they can return to work,” he adds. Insurance and Medicare will usually pay for the laser treatment, which is performed in the office. Pre-authorization is required but there is usually no problem getting patients approved. The initial consultation is free and no referral is needed unless required by the insurance company. “Anyone can come in to determine if he or she is a candidate for this procedure,” says Dr. Hrdlicka. “Many people think they have varicose veins but don’t. We can look at their leg and come up with a diagnosis.” For more information, contact

Want to Restore Your Youthful Appearance? It’s time to defy gravity with a new FDA-approved product now available at A New Image Cosmetic Laser Center in Claremore.

By Carol Beck-Round

One of the signs of aging is a loss of volume in the face, especially in the apples of your cheeks. Now, a new product, Juvederm Voluma XC, can help you regain that youthful appearance, according to Dr. Dwight J. Korgan with A New Image

Laser Cosmetic Laser Center in Claremore. The injectable gel is the first and only filler FDA-approved to instantly add volume to the cheek area, giving you a subtle lift and helping to restore contour and a more youthful profile

for up to two years in patients over the age of 21. “This product lasts longer than previous products by Juvederm, which only lasted up to a year,” says Dr. Korgan. “Voluma XC is also only approved at this time for use in the cheek area.”

Dr. Dwight Korgan prepares to inject the new FDA-approved Juvederm Voluma XC into the apples of a patient’s cheeks. The new product is less invasive than surgery and lasts longer than regular Juvederm.

As we age, we lose elasticity in our faces, leading to sagging of the skin. With the use of Voluma XC, you see naturallooking results. The product contains a modified hyaluronic acid (HA) made from a naturally occurring complex sugar. “We started using the product last fall, but it has been available in Europe since 2005,” says Dr. Korgan. According to Dr. Korgan, this product does not clump like others do and is less expensive than surgical procedures, including those that remove fat from other places in the body, which is then injected into the cheeks. “It’s less invasive and the results are much better because injecting fat can leave a lumpy texture.” A local anesthetic is included in the product itself, but a topical can also be applied for those who need it during the multiple smaller injections required during the procedure. Side effects, according to Dr. Korgan, are moderate. “There can be temporary reactions at the treatment site such as tenderness, swelling, bruising, pain, redness and discoloration, but the most common are redness and swelling. After 24 hours, you should be able to resume

your normal activities.” Pregnant women or those allergic to one of the compounds in the product should not get these injections. “It’s also wise to avoid exercise and getting overheated within 24 hours of injection,” he adds. While the product is more expensive than some other fillers, the results do last longer. “About one-half of those who get the procedure need an adjustment a month later,” he says. A clinical study by Allergan revealed that 90 percent of people were more satisfied with their facial appearance at six months and 76 percent of people still experienced increased satisfaction two years after treatment. Until March 1, A New Image is offering a special price on the product.

Buyer Beware When Searching for a Home OklaHomes Realty wants potential home buyers to be aware of changes in industry.

By Carol Beck-Round Searching for the right home for your family’s needs can be stressful, especially if you don’t have accurate information or a real estate agent who cares about you. That’s where Allen Stout, broker/ owner, and his sales associates at OklaHomes Realty, Inc. live up to their company motto: “A friend you can trust in real estate.” “Home buyers, as well as sellers, need to understand what

is happening in the industry right now,” says Stout. “With online residential real estate sites like Zillow and Trulia, potential home buyers can be misled by inaccurate information at these sites, especially Zillow.” According to Stout, Zillow gathers information from realtors’ listings and inputs it into their database. However, several factors need to be considered because

the information is not updated frequently, meaning a listing may have sold the year before but is still listed at the Zillow site. “This can be frustrating for the person searching for a home. It’s better, and saves time for a buyer, if he will start with Realtor.com or better yet, go straight to our website or their favorite realtor’s website.” Stressing accuracy of information about listings, Stout added,

Kathy Geyer, sales associate, and Allen Stout, broker/owner of OklaHomes Realty, Inc., look over a recent listing on their website. Stout’s company is celebrating 25 years in the real estate business.

“Zillow’s estimate about a house’s worth also does not take into account knowledge of the area where the home is located.” Sales Associate Kathy Geyer agrees. “I had to deal with this problem when a client found a local listing on Zillow. Zillow had underestimated the worth of the house because they had no knowledge of the neighborhood and other information that is necessary for making an accurate assessment of a property’s worth. Because my client did not want to budge from Zillow’s estimate, they lost out on being able to purchase the property. They refused to recognize that the number Zillow quoted did not accurately reflect local information.” How does this happen? “They don’t always investigate the facts or take the time to do so, such as the condition and age of the home, the neighborhood, and whether the property is in foreclosure or not. These factors impact a house’s value that Zillow does not take into account because it can go either way, meaning a house can be worth more or less than what their website states,” she adds. Stout adds, “They seem to have their own formula for determining the value of property, but it’s not always very accurate. This not only impacts the buyer but

should concern the seller as well.” In addition, when a potential buyer searches Zillow or Trulia, Stout says, “You have to create an account and give them personal information.” What this can lead to, he adds, “is that your personal information, including your income, can legally be sold to other parties.” On the OklaHomes website, a buyer can search anonymously. “Even better,” says Stout, “you can search via your computer or with our mobile app.” Stout’s concern for potential home buyers boils down to helping people understand what they can expect to get from real estate searches. “Do you want accurate information? If so, it’s best to use a reliable website and choose a REALTOR® who has your best interests at heart.”

HHometown, Personalized Cancer Care Oklahoma Cancer Specialists and Artesian Cancer Center @ Claremore have united under one roof to provide complete cancer care.

By Sheryl Sowell Cancer survivor Emily Hollenberg once said, “Cancer is a journey, but you walk the road alone. There are many places to stop along the way and get nourishment — you just have to be willing to take it.” Oklahoma Cancer Specialists and Artesian Cancer Center @ Claremore have joined forces with the goal to provide quality treatment and “hometown” nourishment to cancer patients, while helping them feel supported along their journey. “We provide a comfortable, homey environment for our patients, with one-on-one personal care,” says Director Debbie Mills. “Patients do not feel like just another number here; they enjoy being greeted by the same friendly faces each time, and they like that everyone knows their name.” Linda Willis, oncology nurse for the past 25 years, works for Oklahoma Cancer Specialists at The Artesian Cancer Center, as well as a major hospital. She says the difference she sees at each location is pronounced. “Cancer patients at the hospital are accustomed to seeing new nurses and staff each time they come in for treatment. Here, they appreciate that they get personal care from the same people each time, particularly since many come in several times a week. We really

get to know our patients. Another perk is that you park right at the front door and come directly inside, unlike at a hospital setting.” The Artesian Cancer Center @ Claremore has provided radiation services for approximately 10 years. After joining forces with Oklahoma Cancer Specialists, patients are now able to receive an integrative range of cancer

treatment, including most types of radiation, all types of chemotherapy, monoclonal antibody therapy, oral therapies, immunotherapy, hormonal therapy, counseling, genetic testing, bone marrow biopsies, and diagnostic consultation – all under one roof, right in Claremore. They are equipped to treat over 300 types of cancer, including colon, brain, skin, breast,

prostate and lung cancers. “You do not need to travel to Tulsa to receive superior cancer care,” says Dr. Fuad Hassany. “We have a comprehensive care team that can help patients ease their burdens and deliver effective treatment. Our goal is to equip patients with a complete understanding of their cancer and the options available as they make

treatment decisions. Everything we do is patient focused.” The world-class team of physicians includes board certified medical oncologists Dr. Hassany and Dr. Ravi Vasireddy, and radiation oncologists Dr. Edward Abraham and Dr. Van Woo. The entire support staff is committed to providing nurturing, hometown care to every patient who walks through the door. One of the doctors will see you within 24 to 48 hours, and typically the next day after requesting an appointment. “You do not need a physician referral to be seen here; you have a choice of where you want to be treated for cancer,” says Debbie. “You also don’t have to fight traffic and spend time driving to Tulsa – we provide high-quality, personal care right in the heart of Claremore.” For more information, contact

TMS Therapy: A Proven Non-Drug Therapy for Depression By Dr. Jeff McIlroy

Debbie’s Story “I’ve pretty much had depression since I was a child. I had separation anxiety in elementary school and it’s basically followed me throughout my life in variant degrees. My first depressive episode was when I was 35 – I was hospitalized for 30 days. That was when I first began taking antidepressants, and it’s been over 20 years that I’ve been on them. And then I just hit a wall – my doctor and I were discussing new options and changing them again. NeuroStar TMS Therapy came along at the perfect time because I started to feel like my options were running out. It felt like medication was putting a band-aid on my depression. I came to realize that this wasn’t my fault and I just needed help. I brought up the idea of NeuroStar TMS Therapy with my doctor and he said he would be offering it in the next few weeks, so I knew this was meant for me. I had done my homework and learned all about it, and I knew it was right for me. It has been a wonderful experience – everyone has been wonderful and caring through this whole process. They genuinely want me to get better. After about a week and a half I really started to feel different. I felt like I was alive – like the veil had been taken off of my eyes. I could see clearly and colors were brighter. Every day it gets better and better. Even though life still happens, it is so much easier to deal with things… I don’t want to crawl under a table

anymore. My house is cleaner. I want to see people, and don’t want to be by myself like I used to. Everything looks and feels different – like before I was a robot going through the motions. I truly believe if it wasn’t for the meds I wouldn’t be functional at all. But the meds took me to that final level where I could function, but I wasn’t living.” At Strength of Mind Behavioral, we are dedicated to making psychiatry innovative, effective and accessible throughout our area. By using diverse, personalized and comprehensive treatment methods, we aim to meet a variety of patients’ needs. We were the first in Tulsa to provide TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation). TMS therapy is an FDA approved, non-invasive medical treatment for major depression. The treatment gives direct MRI strength magnetic pulse stimulation to the frontal lobe of the brain, compelling neurons to start firing, which leads to restoring the brain to normal functioning levels while lifting moods and encouraging ambition. TMS therapy has many advantages, including no medical side effects, the patient is fully awake during treatments, and results are known definitely within four to six weeks. Our team strives to partner with you in your journey to regain your quality of life, restore your health and rediscover a life that is free from depression. TMS therapy is now covered by insurance companies including Medicare.

The Price of Depression is Immeasurable Strength of Mind Behavioral Health offers FDA approved, non-drug therapy to treat depression.

By Duane Blankenship

Strength of Mind was founded in 2004 by Dr. Jeff McIlroy, who serves the organization as chief of psychiatry. “Our purpose is to provide a ready response to those in need of outpatient behavioral health care,” says Dr. McIlroy, “and our goal is to make psychiatry innovative, effective and accessible.” By using diverse, personalized and comprehensive treatment methods, Strength of Mind meets a variety of patients’ needs at any age. Dr. McIlroy recognized the need for a more comprehensive and multi-disciplinary organization to better meet mental health needs within our community. The Christian-based practice includes 25 providers with a team of over 18 skilled professionals. Using diverse, personalized and comprehensive treatment methods, Strength of Mind was the first in Tulsa to provide TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation). TMS therapy is

an FDA approved, non-invasive medical treatment for major depression. The treatment gives direct MRI strength magnetic pulse stimulation to the frontal lobe of the brain, compelling neurons to start firing, which leads to restoring the brain to normal functioning levels while elevating moods and encouraging ambition. Terry serves Strength of Mind as practice manager, while Mallory is the TMS coordinator and Corey is the group’s TMS technician. “I see Mallory as our TMS champion,” says Terry. “She is our liaison with insurance companies, does most of our patient screenings, and is basically the TMS ringleader. Corey makes sure our patients are comfortable through their treatment process, helps Mallory with the screening process, and plays a pivotal role in assisting Dr. McIlroy by monitoring the motor threshold of patients to determine the strength and optimum location to which the ‘pulse’ is administered. In

Mallory, Terry and Corey of Strength of Mind Behavioral Health.

short, Corey is our guru of many talents.” “Research has shown us that while physical activity is a powerful tool in treating depression, exercise is the last thing a depressed person wants to do,” says Mallory. “This typically leads to listlessness, inactivity and remaining out of shape.” Strength of Mind’s solution is one-on-one therapeutic fitness that gets the body moving to boost the recovery process. TMS treatment has proven to have many advantages including no medical side effects. The patient remains fully awake during treatments and results are known within four to six weeks. “As a TMS team, we take

our patients and their treatments very personally. We’re in it with them throughout the process and each person becomes part of our family.” “The Strength of Mind treatment has many facets,” says Mallory, “and we have so much to offer through our three-prong approach to TMS treatment: 1. Wake up the brain; 2. Wake up the body; and 3. Change patient behavior. This is what makes the treatment so unique. We treat the whole person.” The Strength of Mind team partners with each patient as they begin their journey to regain quality of life. “Our goal is to restore health and help each patient rediscover a

life free from depression,” says Terry. TMS Therapy is covered by most insurance companies including Medicare.

To Have and to Hold a Joint Checking Account? “Financially Fit” is a column published by RCB Bank to help you gain knowledge on all things financial. Fitness guides – RCB Bank professionals in the field – offer ideas to help you strengthen your money sense, customize savings training, and provide quick and easy action plans to start whipping your money into shape. By Kyle Head, RCB Bank Product Coordinator

Tim and Kevi Zufall at Bike About in Claremore, owned by Tracy and Jan Whittaker.

First comes love, then comes marriage and then comes combining checking accounts (for some). What to do with your checking and savings accounts may not be the first thing you think about when you decide to get married, but it is an important decision that has to be made. Do you combine your checking accounts into one or do you keep them separate? We asked RCB Bank employees to share their experiences. Personally, my wife and I combined our checking and savings accounts but left her account open with a set dollar amount in it. We use her account for our vacation fund so we can keep track of what we spend and how much money we need for our vacations. For Kevi Zufall, loan officer, and her husband, Tim, they decided to combine their accounts. “It was simply the fact that we were married and saw ourselves as one person rather than two separate people,” Zufall said. Francy Palmer, retail coordinator, and her husband have separate checking accounts. “We do that not because we are trying to

hide anything from each other, but it makes it easier to buy each other a gift or surprise without the other person accidentally finding out,” Palmer said. “As a precaution for the unexpected, he is the POD beneficiary on my account and I am on his account, so if something happens to either one of us the balances of our individual accounts would automatically belong to the surviving spouse.” Derek Robinson, mortgage officer, and his wife have separate accounts but also have a joint account that serves as their savings account. “We like having separate accounts,” he said. “We don’t keep much in our separate accounts but it’s nice to have our own spending money.” There isn’t a right or wrong answer to combining accounts or keeping them separate. It’s a personal preference of what fits your lifestyles best. If you don’t like what you choose now, six months or a year down the road you can always make changes. Combining accounts is simple, just stop in and see your local banker and let them know you would like to join your account(s)

with your spouse or significant other. “The process takes 15 to 30 minutes depending on the services the new account owner requests,” says Brenda Romesburg, CSR. “If the last name is being changed, we need proof of the new name such as a marriage license or photo ID.” Your local bank is here to help and can answer any questions or concerns you may have about joint accounts. Opinions expressed above are the personal opinions of the RCB Bank employees interviewed, and meant for generic illustration purposes only.

New, Easy-toClean Carpet Mill Creek Carpet & Tile is the first in the Tulsa area to offer Smart Strand Forever Clean carpet.

By Peter Maddux Smart Strand Forever Clean is the perfect carpet for families with kids and pets, while still maintaining that luxurious softness that you can sink your toes into. Smart Strand Forever Clean has proven itself in over seven million homes. “Whether it’s kids, pets, or one of life’s unexpected spills, Smart Strand Forever Clean is a carpet you can depend on to come clean time and time again,” says Gray. Mill Creek Carpet & Tile has chosen to be the first carpet supplier in the Tulsa area to carry this revolutionary product. You can see it repel stains for yourself when you visit one of the Mill Creek stores by asking for a demonstration. Demonstrations are held daily upon request. So go ahead and enjoy the beauty and warmth of carpet without having to worry about how well it will clean. Go to Mill Creek Carpet & Tile and check out Smart Strand Forever Clean. For 85 years, Mill Creek has been supplying the finest quality building materials with the same award winning service envisioned by its founder, L.E. “Pete” Dunn.

On Saturday, January 17, Mill Creek Carpet & Tile made history by unveiling a new product to its customers that is going to revolutionize the way America buys carpet. People from all around the Tulsa area, along with the listeners of 94.1 The Breeze, witnessed Smart Strand Forever Clean being put to the test as demonstrators soaked the carpet in an aquarium full of red wine. Customers were amazed to see the red wine release from the carpet fibers using water. This is a product you really must see to believe. “Smart Strand Forever Clean is the easiest-to-clean carpet on the market,” says Gary Gray, store manager of Mill Creek on 41st Street. “It is the only carpet with lifetime stain resistance built into the fiber.” Smart Strand carpet has already been making a name for itself over the past 10 years because of superior stain resistance. It is a highly rated carpet for consumer satisfaction, clean ability, and durability. “Now, Smart Strand has outdone itself by introducing one of the best carpet ever invented... again!” adds Gray.

In January, Mill Creek and 94.1 The Breeze teamed up to show area residents how easy it is to clean Smart Strand Forever Clean carpet. Pictured: Dave Weston and Heather Miles. In 1934, Mr.Dunn started his lumber company with a commitment to service and professional expertise. Today, the same commitment is practiced in all areas of our expanding company. Mill Creek is still owned by the Dunn family of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and is led by Jeff Dunn as President, and his father, Jim, who serves as Chairman. Today, Mill Creek offers much more than just lumber from its 21 locations. Oklahoma professionals in the building and construction business, as well as designers and homeowners, depend on Mill Creek for just about

everything in building materials. In addition to our lumber company, Mill Creek has eleven carpet and tile stores, a new kitchen idea center, and a windows and doors division. No matter where you shop, you’ll never find a friendlier atmosphere than at one of our Mill Creek locations. Mill Creek employs approximately 500 full-time employees. There are twenty-one locations throughout the state of Oklahoma dedicated to the carpet and tile business. In every location, they strive to give their customers a positive experience with award-

winning customer service. Their goal is to turn your building or remodeling plans into a wonderful reality. For more information, contact

Green Lawn AAThisHealthy Summer Starts Today SoonerLawn provides a six-step lawn care program that begins in early spring. By Deanna Rebro A thick, lush, head-turning landscape this summer begins with a phone call today to SoonerLawn. So much of caring for a lawn comes down to knowing what needs to be done and when to do it. For the past 10 years, SoonerLawn has been delivering a six-step lawn care program from early spring through fall that gets rid of weeds and nourishes grass so it will look good year-round. Owner and U.S. Army Captain Michael Bolton says that early spring is the best time to begin preparing your lawn. SoonerLawn’s six-step program begins with an application of preemergent herbicide for crabgrass control, continues with additional weed control and fertilizers during spring and summer, and ends with a winterization weed control in the fall. While many homeowners treat their own lawns and obtain so-so results, the SoonerLawn professionals take things to the next level by treating lawns with the right formulations for that particular grass at the right times

throughout the year for optimum results, applying lime to regulate proper soil ph to allow maximum effectiveness of fertilizers, and monitoring for insects and diseases.

One of the hallmarks of SoonerLawn is quick results. “We don’t have to tell our customers their lawns are getting better. They can see improvement each time we’re there,” says Michael. One customer, president and landscaping chairman of The Reserve at Battle Creek said, “The Reserve looks better that it has ever looked in

the past, thanks to the Sooner crew. They are very professional and take great pride in their work. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a lawn care company.” Michael adds that SoonerLawn’s prices are below most, if not all, other local lawn care companies. And their prompt and

professional customer service goes above and beyond expectations. “We keep our customers happy by offering great service at a great price with great results. Just give us a chance to prove it,” he says. A five-year customer echoes his comment. “We have found Michael’s work to be very good, as well as his pricing. We would highly recommend his services.” SoonerLawn serves residential and commercial customers throughout Tulsa, Broken Arrow, Bixby, Jenks, Sand Springs, Owasso and Claremore. Optional services include fertilization of flower beds, aeration for more effective watering and nourishment, perimeter control, insect control of fleas, ticks, ants, spiders and chinch bugs, mole control, turf disease control and fescue seeding. They are fully licensed and insured, and all their recommended work is guaranteed. SoonerLawn is also accredited with the Better Business Bureau. Preparation now will go a long way toward enjoying the healthy green lawn you want this summer. And you don’t have to lift a finger except to call Sooner Lawn.

Carrie Shepard’s entire life transformed after discovering the benefits of essential oils. By Sheryl Sowell

Perhaps you have a friend or acquaintance who has told you about the power of essential oils, and how the oils have “changed their life.” If you’re skeptical of such grand statements, consider the story of Claremore resident Carrie Shepard. Eight years ago, Carrie was a stay-at-home mom who was experiencing a multitude of health problems. Today, she is a Platinum Independent Distributor for Young Living Essential Oils, with over 47,000 members and 140 leaders in her organization. She travels the world sharing her life-changing experience with essential oils. “In 1995, my husband, Chip, and I were blessed to welcome our third child into the world. Cassie was born with numerous challenges; she had open heart surgery, multiple stomach surgeries, eye surgery, and several gastric procedures, and though

she endured so much pain, she was a sweetheart. For six years of stress and heartache, I lived on caffeine and sugar and got very poor sleep. Just when I thought it couldn’t get any worse, as we faced the fact that we would have to soon let Cassie leave her earth suit, everything did get worse. During one of our last marathon hospital stays, we had a leak under our kitchen sink that went nine days unattended. We came home to a moldy house with a child on hospice care. I began to experience severe fatigue, sinus problems, sores at the sides of my mouth that wouldn’t heal, a sore in my nose that wouldn’t heal, and worst of all, complete brain fog. “Shortly thereafter, our sweet Cassie left this world for the next. Heartbroken and sick, I began the fight to regain my health and fix our moldridden home. Eight months of seeking traditional medical care, followed by years of radical diet changes and thousands

Hundreds of oils are available through Young Living, a global company that has offered the highest quality essential oils for over 20 years. Carrie focuses on offering everyday oils for wellness, including lemon, peppermint, thieves, lavender, frankincense, citrus fresh and many more. “Our mission is to teach people wellness, purpose and abundance. People who use essential oils have found that they think more clearly, feel more emotionally sound, and have a better overall quality of life. This was most certainly true for my life.”

James 5:14 says, ‘Is anyone among you sick? Then he must call for the elders of the church and they are to pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.’”

BBusiness Has Finally Come Home Make It Special Party Store & Event Planning in Claremore “celebrates life – one balloon at a time.”

By Carol Beck-Round After 37 years, Renee HairstonWilson has finally found a permanent home for her business in Claremore. Make It Special Party Store & Event Planning, now located at 618 W. 8th St., two blocks north of the J.M. Davis Museum, moved in August to their current building after their lease was up at the previous location. “This building has a family history that I am very proud of,”

says Renee. “My family moved to Claremore in 1978 and purchased the property to start Claremore Rental, where small contractors and homeowners could rent tools for light jobs where it was costprohibitive to purchase them.” After operating the business for seven years, Renee’s parents sold it to relatives who eventually moved Claremore Rental to a different location. After the busi-

ness moved, a welding company occupied it until a couple of years ago. “We started working about a year ago to remodel and get the building ready to move into.” While the business has moved, the commitment to making events special has not changed. The company offers balloon designs from simple balloon bouquets to large event designs. “We carry only the best quality

balloons on the market,” she says. Other products and services include gift wrapping, themed gift baskets, gourmet chocolates, basic party supplies, Melissa & Doug toys, puzzles and stuffed plush animals. They also offer custom gift bows from six inches to 16 inches for vehicles. “We offer delivery, setup and pickup as part of our business, including event planning and design, often utilizing our rental items which include tables, chairs, linens, centerpieces and food service,” she adds. “We’ve done weddings, birthdays and corporate events, but we’re not limited to these event types.” Make It Special also caters to schools for homecomings, class reunions, graduations, proms and dances. “We’re able to customize balloon designs with our vinyl cutting machine,” she says. “I think that really sets us apart from other companies. If you want something ‘special,’ come to us. Our business has so many choices and can make anything to fit your budget. As a professional certified balloon artist, I have been able to relay that skill to my team.” Her team includes Renee’s daughter, who also helps out part-time at the store. “Kendel,

a certified wedding planner and photographer, is extremely talented in design and is able to offer custom invitations.” In addition, Renee counts on three employees to assist customers. In addition, her mother, Dee Hairston, also pitches in when needed. “I thank God every day for these wonderful ladies,” says Renee. “We couldn’t be more pleased with the way the new building has turned out,” she adds. “Having my business in the same location my parents started their first business, is like we are finally ‘home.’ It feels a little surreal and I wish my dad could be here to be see it. I think he would be pleased.” Make It Special is open Tuesday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

You Can Go Home Again outpatient physical therapy provision to Claremore. “This has allowed me to more directly work with area citizens and add services as needed. I love being able to practice and be actively involved in my home town.” The idea of living and working in Claremore also appealed to Claremore grad Kyle Stafford, DPT, who came to SUMMIT for a two-month internship, which eventually led to full-time employment two years ago. “One of the things I enjoy the most about SUMMIT is spending time with the local athletes at Claremore High School, RSU, and other schools in Rogers County.” An internship at SUMMIT Pediatrics also led to a full-time position for Jenny Swinney, SLP, who joined the practice six years ago. “I enjoyed my experience as an intern. It was apparent all of the clinicians loved their patients

and worked hard to give them the best care possible.” Swinney and her husband both grew up in Claremore. “Being able to live and work in my hometown is a blessing.” PTA Lauren Froese, a former CHS athlete, was also drawn to SUMMIT, but her career there began in the business office while she attended PTA school in Tulsa. After completing her two-year degree, she was offered a fulltime position in pediatric therapies. “I’ve been with SUMMIT for seven years – four as a PTA – and I love being able to help facilitate function in Rogers County children.” Although Matt Gray, DPT, has only been with SUMMIT for just over a month, he was drawn to return to Claremore and SUMMIT “after much prayer, talk and discussion with my wife. We wanted to be closer to family. We’re

continued from page 1 excited to be back where I grew up and I hope to be a positive impact here.” Vicky Carriger, human resources director, began as a front office receptionist. After being promoted to billing coordinator, she eventually moved into her current position. “I love working for a company that promotes within and really values their employees. It’s wonderful to live, work and play in Claremore.” For Marketing Director Delayna Trease, a summer internship was also the avenue leading to a full-time position at SUMMIT. “I couldn’t be happier to be a part of SUMMIT and in the community where I grew up. SUMMIT truly cares about each person walking through the door.” SUMMIT offers rotations for clinical staff that are interested in a career at SUMMIT or for those interested in learning more about outpatient adult and pedi-

Think Outside the Box for a Perfect Valentine’s Day Gift company is offering its clients a free kitchen or bathroom sink if you place your order before February 14. For 35 years, owner Rex Marsh has been involved in the manufacturing, fabrication and installation of cultured marble and granite countertops, showers and bathtubs. In 2004, he opened his own business located east of Claremore. Marsh made the decision to open Harmony Star Marble & Granite so he could cater to builders and home remodelers in the Rogers County area. However, his company’s reputation for excellence has earned him repeat business from Tulsa, Mayes County, Grand Lake, Skiatook and Broken Arrow as well as Rogers County. Located halfway between Claremore and Pryor off Highway 20, the company offers four different products at one location, including eco-friendly products like recycled glass, cultured Italian marble and quartz, manufactured stone and Brazilian

granite from the least expensive to the high end. If you’re remodeling your bathroom or kitchen or building a new home, everything you need is available through Rex. “From the smallest job to the biggest job, whether it is one vanity top or a whole house, we can work with you to complete your project,” he adds. This includes showers, tubs and sinks. The family-owned business with seven employees believes in treating its customers right. “I depend on my employees who do a good job and I try to treat everyone honestly. I want my customers to be happy when the job is done,” he says. “We have a good rating with the BBB and with local people so we get a lot of referrals – and, if there is a problem, whether it was our problem or not, we take care of it. Our motto is ‘The nicest compliment we can receive is the referral of your friends and family.’”

Cappuccino Corner Under New Ownership continued from page 1 is very popular,” she adds. Another popular lunch item is the Krimel Wrap, a tomato basil tortilla with chicken, bacon, cheese and veggies. Salads and soups are still on the menu too. Monday and Fridays, you’ll find potato soup, while Tuesday’s menu includes broccoli and cheddar. Tomato soup is on the menu for Wednesdays, while chicken and wild rice can be ordered on Thursdays. Of course, you can’t forget the coffee. “We offer a coffee of the day,” she adds, “including Guatemalan, Columbian and Peruvian blends.” You can also choose from 16 different coffee flavors as well as iced coffee, lattes, breve (a steamed half and half), espressos and steamers. “Our quality coffee is provided by baristas who care about the entire coffee culture, from advanced brewing techniques such as pour-overs and French press, to beautiful latte art made in our cups of coffee,” says Kim. “Each cup is a testament to our commitment of quality coffee from quality people in a quality atmosphere.” The new owners have also revamped the décor to reflect a rustic theme, including three picnic-style tables for larger groups. You’ll also now find a couch and a few easy chairs. Two smaller rooms are still available for rental by reservation.

“We have church groups, bridge groups and book clubs who meet here,” she says, “and we also do local catering.” With free Wi-Fi, the coffee shop is a great hangout for college students. “We offer a 10 percent discount with proof of ID to RSU students,” she adds. In addition, police, fire and sheriff’s department members in uniform receive a 20 percent discount. Military personnel also receive a 10 percent discount. The Marcottes are also planning more open mic nights for those who are musically gifted as well as for poets. “We had one in January and it went over well,” says Colton. “We are also working on getting some comedy acts in the near future. “We want this to be a home away from home where people can come in and relax in a non-threatening environment. It’s inviting, cozy and welcoming.” For more information, contact

With a parts showroom that spans 4,500 square feet, Toalson and his staff have an extensive inventory that includes everything from common replacement parts to accessories that can take your travelling experience to the next level, such as refrigerators, outside recliners and ice makers. “My favorite accessory is the

ice maker,” says Toalson. “It’s portable, so you can use it outside the RV. Some folks use it in their garage or take it camping. It’s a top seller.” If the part or accessory you’re looking for is not in stock, Toalson can order it. “Most accessories deliver in one to three days, depending on the manufacturer,” he says. Their website has a full catalog available, which makes online ordering simple. And, if installation of a part or accessory is beyond a customer’s ability, the Bob Hurley RV service department will step in and take care of it. Brad Barr, service manager,

By Christopher Davis In 2009, Jana Hallman purchased Ashton Kelly Candles, leaving behind her career as a nurse and healthcare administrator. After about 30 years in the industry, Hallman found herself ready for something new. In a bit of serendipity, her love for fragrance lit the way to a new career path. After more than five years in her new career, Hallman keeps busy filling orders and concocting new scents in her candle factory. The building was constructed by her husband, Dewayne. Those who pull into the drive are greeted with a breeze tinged with a potpourri of scents emanating from the independent candle maker’s headquarters. Inside the workshop, tall shelves are filled with inventory: everything from wax tarts for warmers, to fragrance oils and room sprays, to candles of various sizes and colors in glass jars. Beyond the shelves is Hallman’s workspace. Upon several table

tops, free of wax drips at the moment, sit rows of jars, empty save for lonely wicks peaking up above the top of the rims. Along the northern wall, a stove and an industrial-looking metal vat warms a fresh batch of wax for the next pour. The south side of the workshop is dedicated to “shipping and receiving.” Dewayne is passing the time putting labels on bags. Behind him is a trailer, dedicated to transporting loads of products to home shows and delivering to retails outlets across the region. Hallman invests a lot of time and effort to ensure her candles burn clean and evenly, and works with experts in the industry to develop her recipes. “You have to use science in order to develop a quality candle that burns as expected,” she says. “I have to be cognizant of different waxes, wick size, how quickly they burn – and make sure they don’t smoke.” Jana’s care and attention

February 2015 to detail extends to her customers, too. She can often be seen at trade shows chatting with customers about their ideal fragrances, giving mini lessons in the process. “One of the things I loved about being an RN, whether it was with patients or families or mentoring staff, was teaching. I still get to teach people how to take care of fragrance in their home – how to use it effectively.” Jana explains that quality fragrance, even though it costs a more up front, is actually a better bargain than cheaper candles sold in big box stores. Ashton Kelly candles burn cleaner, last longer, and retain their full scent throughout the life of the candle. She also strives to teach customers that color is separate from scent. Though we tend to associate certain fragrances with specific colors (for example, red is usually cinnamon), there is no reason a candle cannot match a room’s color scheme and have the scent you desire. “I can make any fragrance with any color,” explains Hallman.
