Whether you’re looking for a traditional loaf of homemade white, honey wheat, sourdough or other bread, or you want something to satisfy your sweet tooth, Holt and staff can oblige, with made-from-scratch chocolate chip, snickerdoodle, oatmeal raisin, sugar, peanut butter, molasses crinkle or lemon glory cookies. Meat lovers need look no further than Front Porch, with an assortment of smoked meats, with pork spareribs, chicken, ham, bologna, brisket, pulled pork, hot links, bratwurst and more available, with Gin-Dandy barbecue sauce for sale to compliment your choice of meat. Wednesday night is family dinner night at Front Porch Bakery, with preorders necessary to allow Holt and staff to prepare a homemade takeout meal which serves 2-3 or 4-6, depending on the order.
But for all the must-be-tasted-to-bebelieved items offered at the Front Porch Bakery, Holt said she hopes her growing business provides the opportunity for families to gather and partake in something special. “Our goal is always to do the kind of home-cooking that you would expect to get at your grandma’s house – that’s important to us,” she said. “Matt and I started the business with the idea of having a place where people can come and enjoy delicious food that’s made fresh daily, where people can feel welcome and feel like they’re in a special, welcoming place, and where they feel like family.” Front Porch Bakery & Smoke House is located at 18345 South Highway 66, on the east side of the road, less than a mile north of Lowry Road in Claremore. Bells Will Be Ringing During Salvation Army’s Annual Red Kettle Drive BY TOM FINK
W
ith the holidays upon us, so are a flood of sights and sounds of the Christmas season. If you listen carefully – over the sounds of ubiquitous Christmas music, church choir performances, stressedout shoppers, and children reciting their Christmas wish lists to Santa at the mall – above it all, rises the sound of the ringing of a bell – the sound of hope. This year, the annual Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign returns to help provide millions of our friends and neighbors in crisis with food, shelter, disaster relief and more. In Rogers County, the familiar Red Kettles have been appearing for the past few weeks and will remain in front of participating merchant’s storefronts, raising money for those in need, and stationed by area residents armed with a bell and hearts filled with goodwill. “We’re part of Salvation Army, but we’re unique (in Rogers County) in

that, first of all, we’re all volunteers,” said Jerry Hayes, event manager, Salvation Army of Rogers County. “Not only the Salvation Army crew here in Rogers County, but everyone who rings the bell here is a volunteer – that’s quite a different story than anywhere else that I know of. “Other branches use some volunteers, but where we are, we’re all volunteers, so the money we raise here doesn’t have any ‘overhead’ if you will,” he continued. “We do pay some administrative fees to Tulsa, but basically, the money we generate, we put back into the community – the community being Rogers County.” The origins of the Red Kettle itself date back more than 125 years. In 1891, Captain Joseph McFee of the Salvation Army had hoped to provide Christmas meals for more than 1,000 people in the San Francisco area, and he remembered a pot on the docks of Liverpool from his days as a sailor. McFee then requested permission to put a pot on the docs at Oakland, and with permission granted, did so, and

the proceeds raised from this first pot or kettle raised proceeds to feed thousands. He did the same in more than 30 locations over the next two years, and after he was transferred to Boston in
Above: Food4Kids Director Angie Graves. Food4Kids, which helps provide healthy snacks on the weekends to local children who might not otherwise have them, is one organization that benefits from the efforts of the Salvation Army.
1897, he set up three pots in the center of the city and raised funds to feed 150,000 people nationwide. Red Kettles soon began appearing in New York, and Captain McFee’s idea spread across the country and throughout the world at Salvation Army outposts. While the Red Kettle is firmly established as part of the Salvation Army’s past, it continues to be a symbol of hope and means to raise funds to help those in need as the organization moves into the future. “Last year, there was 961 hours of bell-ringing (in Rogers County), but this year, we’re shooting for more than 1,900 hours – the reason this number is so much higher this year than last is that we’ve added Catoosa, which had previously been out of the Tulsa area,” Hayes said. “We’ve taken that over this year, so the bell ringers there are under the Rogers County umbrella this year.” In Rogers County, bell ringers will be stationed from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Reasor’s, Walmart, and the new 10Box Cost Plus (formerly Warehouse Market) in Claremore, at Walmart and Reasor’s in Catoosa, as well, at Apple Market in Oologah, and at Harp’s Food Store in Inola. Bell ringers started shifts on the day after Thanksgiving at Walmarts, earlier in November at other locations, and this year the Red Kettle Campaign will continue through Christmas, stationed by volunteers from local churches, civic groups, and individuals wanting to make a difference in their community. “One thing that’s unique about this year, and not in a good way, is that there are five fewer days in the calendar than there were last year, so we’re going to
try to reach our goal in fewer (calendar) days,” he said. “They’ll be ringing right up to 6:00 on Christmas Eve.” Even with fewer days to raise funds, the Salvation Army of Rogers County’s goal is a lofty one -- $90,000 –but one which both Hayes and Graves feel can be reached through volunteer efforts and the generosity of the public. Funds raised through the Salvation Army of Rogers County’s Red Kettle Campaign are distributed through the local Community Action, Resource and Development (CARD) office. Where does the money go? “The Red Kettle Campaign benefits several organizations here in Rogers County, such as Food4Kids, for example,” said Angie Graves, Salvation Army of Rogers County volunteer and director of Food4Kids. “This program, which is now in its 11th year, sends home food every Friday with 425 kids in Rogers County Schools. We pack 1,700 bags of food a month, which is distributed to the different school districts for those students to take home to have something to eat over the weekend – something which they might not have, if not for this program.” Funding for the Food4Kids program is made possible from money raised during the Red Kettle Campaign, as well as from United Way, Cherokee Nation, Sodexo, Rogers County Bank, ESA Gamma Pi, Inola chapter, individuals, churches, organizations, businesses and small grants. Sponsorship of one child in the Food4Kids program is $125 per year, although any amount donated is appreciated, Graves said. Other programs that benefit from the Red Kettle Campaign are the Salvation Army Summer Camp, which sends 40-50 students ages 7-12 from low-income families to Camp Heart
O’Hills in Tahlequah and homeless assistance. “All these different programs – and helping our neighbors in need – are where the money goes (from the Red Kettle Campaign),” Hayes said. “Giving hope to our neighbors – that’s what we’re here for, that’s what we’re all about.” For more information about the Rogers County Salvation Army, visit satruck.org. Donations may be made by mail to Rogers County Salvation Army, P.O. Box 2728, Claremore, OK, 74018.

Financial Planning
Simple Retirement Savings:
Avoid Four Mistakes By Kelly Hutchinson, AVP, Employee Benefits Officer RCB Bank One day, you are going to retire - whether you’re planning to work for the next 5 years or the next 50. No matter when you stop working, your retirement plan is the key to your future. Social Security payments may help. But it’s not enough. You’ll need your own savings, too. Set yourself up for success by avoiding these four mistakes:
1. Procrastinating. The key to a happy, restful retirement is to save as much as possible for as long as possible. Your company’s 401(k) makes it easy, because the money comes out of your paycheck before you even miss it. If you haven’t joined your plan or started saving, do it now. Your company doesn’t have a 401(k)? There are other retirement options like ROTH and traditional IRA accounts. Ask a professional wealth advisor which option may be best for you.
2. Stealing from your future self. That’s what you do when you take a 401(k) loan or early withdrawal from your retirement account. Sometimes things get tough financially, but withdrawing retirement funds early should be your very last option.
3. Cashing out. When you change jobs, you might be tempted to cash out and withdraw all your savings from your 401(k) plan. Don’t do it! Here’s why: You’ll have to pay taxes on the money and a 10% penalty, too. You’ll be left with about half in cash now - and back to zero for retirement. Instead, roll over the money into a 401(k) at your new job, leave it in the old plan, or roll it to an IRA to stay on track to retire when you want.
4. Relying on guesswork. 1 + 1 = 2. Knowing how much money you need in retirement can be just as easy. Chances are it’s a pretty big number. But knowing is better than guessing. Use a retirement calculator (there are lots of them online) - you’ll have an answer in minutes. Investment products not insured by the FDIC. ulsa is a celebratory city, and during the holiday season, there are many events that are date-worthy, family-friendly and group welcoming. How about a night full of Christmas lights— some 2 million lights worth—and season-themed activities? Some area organizations spend half a year preparing for the arrival of holiday spectators. Rhema Lights Extravaganza can be seen at the Rhema Bible Church campus located at 1025 West Kenosha Street in Broken Arrow. This outing can be a drive-thru, walk-through or carriage-ride tour. Lights turn on Thanksgiving Eve, Nov. 27, at 6 p.m. through new year’s eve. The glitz continues daily from 5:30 to 11:30 p.m. Admission is free, but donations are accepted. Snacks are available on-site. For more information or to book that carriage ride, call (918) 258-1588 or visit rhemalights.org. The train is free for all ages and takes passengers from noon until 3 p.m. each Saturday before Christmas Eve. There’s nothing that says Christmas more than ice-skating, and nothing says accommodation more than a 9,000-square-foot outdoor ice rink set to a backdrop of the towering Tulsa skyline. Skating guides are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. No Christmas event is complete without a visit from Santa. Each Sunday in December from 2 to 4 p.m., Santa is on-site to hear

In addition to tempting your taste buds, swag bags will be handed out at Breathe Modern Dentistry. There just may be a winning Buy Broken Arrow ticket in your bag as well, not to mention coupons and goodies from local retailers. Santa will be at The Museum Broken Arrow to greet all those in attendance, so you can snap a picture with him to use it on your next Christmas card and tell him how good you’ve been this year. Adding to the fun will be a photo booth for those festive group pictures. This event really gets those who attend in the festive spirit.” Only 500 tickets are available for this event, so get yours now by visiting the Broken Arrow Chamber of Commerce’s Facebook page or by going directly to their website at bachamber.com.

TOUR A SPECTACLE OF LIGHTS IN TULSA NEIGHBORHOODS.

So how can a family seeking an evening of entertainment find the best trek? Start with a drive through south Tulsa subdivision Preston Woods , located at 111th

between Sheridan and Yale. The Perkins home, located on the corner at 5705 East 110th Street, is a showstopper with 30,000 lights. They change their music every year with songs to please every audience member from traditional Christmas music to children’s tunes to the latest rock hit. It’s the Perkins’ teenage daughter that is credited for the rock selection. Trees, rooflines and poles blink in sync with each note. Their radio signal is posted on a sign out front, 98.3 FM. On a busy night, the traffic piles up as limos pull in and out. Wife Laura Perkins just smirks and shakes her head at her husband’s efforts as it seems the brains behind the equipment and systems is electrical engineer Jay Perkins. “[The display] enables families to create memories as a family unit,” Jay Perkins said. “They
would be able to remember the nights sitting out in front of the ‘crazy guy’s’ Christmas lights.” For 14 years now, showtime starts on Thanksgiving evening and runs through New Year’s Eve from 6 to 11 p.m. nightly. Be prepared to wait in turn for the prime spot at the corner in front of the house; parking turns over about every 25 minutes, the length of the show. Remember to turn off the headlights. Just a few blocks away in Forest Park South subdivision at 104th and Sheridan, the houses are breathtaking, trimmed out and ready for passersby. One particular home, 6125 E 106th Street, belonging to Doug and Suzanne Wright, is a show to be seen. It too boasts of 30,000 lights timed to music, a 25-minute spectacular show, and broadcasting their own radio frequency, 105.7 FM.
They have traditional Christmas music, but keep the seat belt on as one tune boasts screaming guitars that wail out a tune while the lights flicker wildly. “We love driving around during the holiday season and looking at Christmas lights,” Bixby mother of three Bethany Pepin said. “The girls get snuggled up in their pajamas. We have our favorite spots we check out every year but always seem to happen upon new ones to add to our list. It’s one of

Peoria Avenue borders the neighborhood on the east, the Inner Dispersal Loop on the north, Hazel Boulevard to the south, and on the west is the Midland Valley Railroad right of way. Now, the families who live in this neighborhood are lighting enthusiasts and host a promising show. A thermos of hot coffee, a hipflask of cocoa for the kids, and a handful of snacks would top off the drive-thru adventure nicely.

COOLANT/ ANTIFREEZE
When antifreeze is new, it has a sweet smell to it, but once it starts to get old or dirty, it will develop an odor as it becomes acidic. Old antifreeze can eat away at the hoses and internal workings, weakening those parts. An extreme change in temperature, such as a freeze, can cause weakened parts to crack and burst, perhaps the radiator or engine block. “When you go from hot to cold, that’s when you can see problems,” said Wes. “If a hose cracks, a little seep can turn into an even bigger leak.”
TIRES
During the hot summer months, tires can wear quickly and even become dry and cracked. If tire
pressure is too low or too high, uneven wear on the tires can cause the tire to become hazardous, with blowouts a possibility. As temperatures change, so does the tire pressure in your vehicle. South Pointe will check tire pressure and fill as needed for free; just simply pull in and request. Checking your own tires is imperative, with regular emphasis on the tread and pressure. Most tires are now equipped with tread lines that show when the tread is low, but if you do not have these, a penny can be a good measurement tool. “If you turn the penny upside down and stick it between the tread, Lincoln’s nose should be covered,” said Wes. “Below that, it’s time for new tires.” Bear in mind that tire wear can vary depending on consistent tire pressure, so checking the entire surface, center and sides, is a good practice.
BATTERY
If your vehicle battery is more than three years old, it is highly advisable to have it inspected.
Extreme temperature changes can weaken the cells, and a voltage check will help identify the need for replacement.
“When the weather changes to extreme cold or hot, that’s when we see the most problems when things go wrong with a vehicle.”
OTHER ESSENTIALS
Wiper blades, hoses and belts, and other fluids in the car should be checked regularly, but especially before Winter and summer, as they will rapidly deteriorate in excessive heat or cold. The experts at South Pointe are ready to serve and inspect your vehicle for your seasonal security. Stop in now and trust them to keep you warm and safe on the road this winter.

The Christmas Queen BY SHANNON SMITH

y mother was the queen of Christmas. For most of my life, Mom had nine Christmas trees in our house. Nearly every room had a tree, and each tree had its own theme. The tree in my room was pink and covered with little doll ornaments. The kitchen tree had bright red balls and miniature cooking tools. The day after Thanksgiving, Dad would go up in the attic to start the removal of dozens of huge boxes filled with treasures my mom had collected through the years. Every decoration went up somewhere in our house, whether it was the construction paper reindeer my sisters and I made in pre-school or the porcelain angel she bought the year before at the “after Christmas sale.” Early each December, my sisters and I would help Mom make cookies and other sweets to take to the widows from our church. We spent an entire day driving to each lady’s house with our plates of homemade treats, and sit in the living room of each home listening to Mom chat away about what each of us girls were doing in school, and how cold it was outside. She would look at us with disappointment because we weren’t contributing to the conversation, but how could we when she was doing all the talking? I remember every one of those ladies we used to visit, and it makes me so proud of my mother for teaching us this act of kindness. Mom threw a Christmas party every year for all the women at church. We would have as many as 75 people in our house, each bringing a different dish of food and a small gift to exchange. They played the “Dirty Santa Game” where gifts were unwrapped one by one, and could be taken away, even by the best of friends. Those parties
lasted for hours, and many of those women said it was their favorite day of the year. On Christmas morning, Mom made the grandkids instant oatmeal with extra cinnamon, and they thought it was the best breakfast in the world. If they were lucky, she would pop frozen waffles in the toaster and slather them with margarine and syrup. My mom passed away five years ago after battling cancer. The first Christmas after her death, Dad brought down the Christmas boxes and trees from the attic for the last time. My sisters and I sorted through it all. We kept some, but packed most of it back into boxes that I took to Tulsa in a U-Haul trailer. Dad said he didn’t want any of it because it was just too painful to look at. I drove to five different nursing homes and asked if they wanted Mom’s Christmas decorations, and they all were thrilled to get them. I even got a thank you note from one telling me how much they enjoyed their new Christmas tree. I love Christmas, but nowhere close to how much my mother loved
it. Her legacy still lives on in the lives of many people, including the women at her church. They still have their annual party in the home of my mother’s best friend. I moan at the thought of putting up Christmas decorations, but my children insist I make our house look as festive as I can because that’s what Grandma would have done. For years, I served my kids “Grandma’s oatmeal,” but I prefer to make mine the night
before Christmas in the form of muesli. I think my mom would approve. I wish everyone a very merry Christmas filled with pleasant memories and new traditions. Try my muesli recipe on Christmas morning and add a little extra cinnamon for my mom.
