Port City Metal Services prides itself on taking care of the health of their employees while running a streamlined operation. Their company-wide philosophy is called: Intelligent Efficiency. It permeates everything they do – from stocking massive, ready-to-go inventory of steel plate, to kitting parts for faster assembly; they are always on-the-go in their technology and processes. “We have a large facility with multiple offices, restrooms, and manufacturing workspaces that need periodic disinfection services,” said Clint Warren, Port City Metals Assistant General Manager. We chose Midwest Pathogend because they have top-notch fogging and electrostatic disinfecting equipment. They are very knowledgeable about the best methods for disinfecting our various work spaces. We really appreciate their responsiveness. They have the ability to put a large team onto the jobsite and disinfect quickly and thoroughly. They do a great job of monitoring work surfaces before and after treatment to verify that everything is properly sanitized. We began using Midwest Pathogend in April, 2020. We have them treat multiple areas

of our facility on a monthly basis.” The latest in protection and prevention is available from Midwest Pathogend Services, serving Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas and beyond. It is used as a last step evaporating fog that reaches virtually every surface in your space without wetting things down. It is safe for electronics, and other highly sensitive materials and surfaces. You get maximum coverage of over 99% of areas that normally get missed or crosscontaminated; you also get a kill rate of 99.9999% for all organisms listed previously, and more. Plus the disinfected room air smells fresher, too. It is EPA registered Sporocidal Disinfectant and they use CDC (Center for Disease Control) protocols. You can stop and prevent outbreaks in your childcare facility, school, medical or dental facility, church, or business. Midwest Pathogend Services will prove it with their procedure commonly used in hospitals, schools and hotels. Since we are fighting something we can’t see - they will come to your space and test using validation methods to provide proof of germ presence before treatment, and the reduction of germ counts after treatment. Their procedure works like this: STEP 1: ASSESSMENT Identify facility needs with onsite swab

generous donors from the church. The virus caught church leaders by surprise, rendering them with no budget for a special event. This forced them to rely on the generosity of people and businesses like Nick Shelton from Shelton Christmas Lights, who selflessly donated labor and lights to make the festivity possible.

Journey to Bethlehem while sitting in the comforts of your car!

Journey to Bethlehem D BY DANGER GEIST

on’t let the pandemic steal your Christmas joy: stop by Oologah United Methodist Church on December 13 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. for a free drive-through Nativity experience that will feature live actors and animals re-telling the birth story of Jesus. Journey to Bethlehem while sitting in the comforts of your car! Oologah UMC is known for their brilliant Christmas children’s service, but the coronavirus left the Christian community grieving the loss of their elaborate annual event. In response, Mission Outreach Coordinator Karla Yates declared, “If we can’t be inside, we’re going outside!”

Those young and old are invited to participate in the touchless drivethrough; you’ll never leave your car as you tune your radio to listen to Christmas music while re-living the story of Christmas. Upon arrival, you’ll be ushered through 4 different stations featuring Mary and Joseph with the archangel Gabriel, the traveling wise men, the shepherds with their horses, sheep, goats, and donkeys, and Christ in the humble Bethlehem manger. It won’t be hard to spot the church: passersby on Highway 169 will see the commotion from the road and be prompted to visit the event, which was financially supported by

“Journey to Bethlehem” will be the swan song event for longtime pastor Reverend Dr. Jennifer Long, whose final sermon at Oologah UMC will be on Christmas Eve as she transitions to a new church. Leading up to the event and thereafter, you’re invited to tune into the Oologah UMC Facebook page for live streams of their services every Sunday at 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. 2020 was meant to be a celebration of Oologah UMC’s 125th Anniversary. “We were unable to celebrate our 125 years in our community because of the pandemic this year, so we had to think outside the box all the way around,” said Yates. The drive-through Nativity experience is just one way they are adapting to continue serving their community.

T

here’s only one time during the year that I get a craving for sweets, and that’s in December. I bake very seldom during the year, but I make up for it at the end by baking dozens of cookies all month long. I happen to think cookies are one of the best gifts for neighbors, teachers, friends, and anyone that needs some holiday cheer. This Christmas, I think we could all use a little cheering up, so why not turn up the music and start baking? We may not be gathering for parties this year, but there’s little harm in passing out plates of goodies on our friends’ doorsteps. You can even organize a cookie exchange with your friends and family, where everyone bakes his or her favorite cookies and shares

them with everyone in the group. Just package a few cookies in a small bag or box, and include the recipe, if you want. You don’t have to be a polished cook to bake something delicious, and you certainly don’t have to make everything look Pinterest perfect. In fact, I tell people I can make a delicious cake, but it won’t be pretty. I’m not interested in tedious decorating, and I think it’s more important that it tastes good. I feel the same way about my cookies, especially when I make my Celebration Cookies that aren’t very pretty, but they taste like a party in your mouth! They’re flavored with cinnamon and nutmeg, and the best part is the chunks of candy bar and corn flakes that give them a special

crunchy texture. They keep well for a couple weeks in an airtight container, and can be frozen for several months. I also happen to know that Santa Claus is a big fan, and he requests them every year. However you are spending the holidays this year, I hope you can make time to relax and appreciate friends and family, even if you can’t gather in person. It’s a good time to think less of ourselves and more about others. And what better way to share cheer than to make someone’s day by baking something sweet and delicious?

Crunchy Celebration Cookies Makes about 2 dozen - One of my children’s favorite breakfast cereals was Cinnamon Toast Crunch. I often grabbed a handful for a perfect snack. These cookies remind me of that cereal, but on a much fancier level. They may not be the prettiest cookies you ever make, but they are so perfect with a cup of coffee or cold milk. I named them celebration cookies because there’s so much goodness inside, it’s like a big party! • • • • • • • • • • • • •

8 ounces unsalted butter (2 sticks) 1/2 cup granulated sugar 1 cup brown sugar 2 eggs, room temperature 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 2 cups all purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon kosher salt 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg 3 Skor candy bars, finely chopped 3 cups cornflakes (cereal), lightly crushed Course sprinkling sugar for dusting

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Prepare cookie sheets with parchment paper or butter. In the bowl of a mixer, cream the butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until very smooth, about 5 minutes. Add the eggs, one at a time and blend until well combined. In a separate bowl, whisk the flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Add to the creamed mixture and stir until you can no longer see flour.

Add Skor candy, and gently stir to combine. Form dough into 2” balls and roll in the crushed cornflakes, pressing gently into dough. Place on prepared cookie sheets 3” apart. Flatten each ball of dough lightly with the back of a spoon, and sprinkle with course sugar. Bake 13 minutes, until edges of cookies are set. Allow to cool. Store in an airtight container for up to 5 days.

Financially Fit

SAVE. SAVE. SAVE!

While most of us know saving money is a good idea, we often struggle to save for the future. Saving is not a one size fits all solution, but building a savings plan for your future is an important step to becoming financially independent. Talk with a wealth advisor about your personal goals. Your future self will thank you.

BUILD AN EMERGENCY FUND

SAVE FOR EDUCATION

PLAN FOR RETIREMENT

Set a reasonable goal. Start by trying to save a small amount, such as $1,000. Don’t feel pressure about how much you are saving, just save something.

Take the next step: Track your spending and develop a budget. Do everything you can to stay within your budget. Little things will help you succeed, e.g., set up automatic savings with your bank, create a grocery list (and stick to it), cut coupons and save change.

Consider education investment programs. A traditional savings plan is good, but you also may want to consider an investment account.

Take the next step: Look up your state’s options for 529 plans or speak with a wealth advisor on interest-earning, tax-advantage plans. Some education plans allow you to use earnings on tuition and fees (including K-12 public and private), books, computer equipment and room and board. Save today for your future self. There are four primary ways you can fund your retirement: personal savings (e.g., IRAs and investment accounts); Employer retirement plans; Social Security benefits and retirement income (rental property, part-time job). Take the next step: Talk with a wealth advisor who can help you build a retirement savings plan and income strategy to maximize your savings.

he origins of the city of Wagoner are unique and progressive, with an early history that includes the first free public schools in Indian Territory, before statehood, and the home of the first female doctor in Indian Territory. Built on a railroad switch that carried passengers from coast to coast, the town was a travel stop that provided lodging and entertainment, and also a shipping hub that benefitted from an exceptional wealth of natural resources. The city’s founders were brilliant minds with a forward-thinking mindset that welcomed diversity, making for a rich history with an extraordinary story. Today, visitors can discover this vibrant past and learn more about its innovative founders by exploring Wagoner: The Early Days in the Wagoner History Center. Guests will also be amazed to find a new, mind-blowing music memorabilia collection in The Legends of Country Music exhibit. This massive collection is unlike any other, anywhere. The museum is located at 122 S. Main, in the historic downtown district. Mayor, AJ Jones, is passionate about his city and is a walking history book. His enthusiasm is infectious and has been integral in the progression of the History Center. When he discovered that world-famous music promoter, Jim Halsey, was seeking to find a home for his massive collection of music memorabilia, he got to work. “I saw the article in September 2017, that he was looking, and it took a while for me to get in touch with him,” he said. Together with city officials, they were able to bring the collection to Wagoner. The collection opened for exhibit in February. “We finally got it open, and it’s marvelous. We couldn’t have done it without all of (continued on page 28)

Keeping your dryer vents clean is important for a number of reasons which include not only energy savings but safety. A dryer works by pushing out hot, moist air so your clothes can dry. If your dryer vent to the outside becomes blocked by lint, the air will not be able to expel moisture like it was designed to do. The result will be trapped moisture that takes more heat energy to evaporate.

Is it Too Late? Solutions for Back Pain Kyphoplasty Case Study

2020 for Dwain Garrison has been a time of discovery and healing. For over one and half years, Dwain suffered from severe chest and shoulder pain. He had been an athlete most of his life and lived the rough and tumble lifestyle that most athletes endure. “I felt like I was having a heart attack all of the time and was experiencing great pain between my shoulder blades,” he explains, “my doctor ran tests and determined that I have always had a very healthy heart and my heart health was not causing my pain.” Following further examination, his doctor diagnosed him with osteoporosis and one broken vertebra. Dwain now set his sights on getting more information and found Dr. Webb. “From the first time I consulted with Dr. Webb, I was confident that he could help me. During my first appointment I was given a thorough examination and then sent for an MRI. The MRI revealed that I had multiple collapsed vertebrae, T – 4, T – 5, and T- 6; that diagnosis was combined with my osteoporosis, degenerative disc disease and spinal stenosis.” Treatment for Dwain’s injuries began within one week of his first MRI. Dr. Webb has been treating him for about 5 1/2 months; each vertebra was treated one procedure at a time with a simple outpatient procedure. “I had my first procedure, then about 1 to 2 months later I had my second, and then my third vertebra was treated within a month of the 2nd vertebra. I had a new MRI before each treatment.

What is Kyphoplasty?

Dr. Webb always made sure I was healthy before each next procedure.” Today, Dwain is living a normal pain-free lifestyle. “All of the pressure is off my nerves and I feel wonderful. I am thankful for the help Dr. Webb and his staff gave me. I would do it all again in a heartbeat!”

How does Kyphoplasty help?

Kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive procedure that quickly repairs vertebral compression fractures (VCF) and restores structural integrity to broken vertebral bone. Kyphoplasty is an outpatient procedure that uses a cavity creation device (usually a balloon) to create a space in the broken vertebra which is then filled with a special bone cement to stabilize the fracture and reduce pain.

The goal of kyphoplasty is to restore the broken vertebra to a more normal height and to fix the pain caused by the fracture. When a vertebral fracture occurs, it most commonly presents as an acute worsening of chronic lower back pain. Many times the patient’s chronic back pain is getting worse, but it’s actually due to a recent fracture. Many of our patients experience immediate pain relief following kyphoplasty. It can help relieve pain by stabilizing the fracture. Improved mobility results because of decreased pain levels.

Dr. Webb – Kyphoplasty Expert When it comes to kyphoplasty, Dr. Webb is one of the most experienced physicians in the US. Dr. Webb has performed thousands of kyphoplasty procedures and has the experience necessary to safely perform kyphoplasty. In fact, he also teaches other physicians how to safely and effectively perform the procedure. Here are a few facts about Dr. Webb’s kyphoplasty expertise: • He performed over 120 kyphoplasties during his training (fellowship). • Was one of the first physicians to perform kyphoplasty in Oklahoma. • Was a principal investigator in the EVOLVE trial,

6550 E 71st St #200 Tulsa, OK 74133

the largest ever on-label study of kyphoplasty in Medicare patients with vertebral fractures with 350 patients enrolled over 24 sites across the US. • The first in Oklahoma and one of a few in the nation to establish a full-service outpatient clinic focused on medically treating the underlying causes of osteoporosis in patients with VCF.. • The highest level of experience in the Tulsa area with 300-400 fractures treated per year. • Continues efforts to refine vertebral fracture treatment, consulting for numerous medical device companies and teaching other physicians how to perform this life-saving procedure.

DISTANCE LEARNING CHANNEL Jump start your future with concurrent classes

4 | THE SIGNAL | JANUARY 2021

In March when the Oklahoma’s State Board of Education suspended the remainder of the publicschool year due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, RSU Public TV came to the aid of public schools across Northeast Oklahoma by launching a new regional educational initiative called @HomeLearning. This effort addressed the growing educational need across our 24-counties in northeastern Oklahoma. @Home Learning provided live Distance Learning (free, over-the-air broadcast and online), resources and opportunities to public school students, homeschool students and the thousands of families who live and work in Northeast Oklahoma. For the rst time ever, elementary and secondary students had ready access to over-the-air learning resources on RSU Public TV Channel 35.1 in order to complete the 2020 school year.

Now the station is once again coming to the aid college bound high school junior and seniors who want to jump start their college careers. Because of the success with @HomeLearing, the Cherokee Nation requested RSU Public TV and RSU make available by broadcast over our 35.2 channel, Rogers State University’s Concurrent Course classes for College Credit to the underserved population throughout the tribe’s 14-county judicial reservation area as well as the entire Rogers State University service area. Cherokee Nation Tribal Councilor Janees Taylor recognized the need and approached RSU-TV about partnering to offer concurrent classes to area high school students. “When Covid-19 made us rethink every aspect of learning and working, it was a natural step to expand the TV platform that RSU has available to other classes” said Councilwomen Taylor. “RSU is meeting a need with technology other universities do not have. With low tuition and now a platform that allows students who did not have access before, this is another barrier to education taken away. This delivery method opens educational doors for students without adequate internet access as it is delivered over TV rather than the internet. I want every Cherokee child to have the opportunity to earn a college degree, in order to accomplish that, it is imperative that we do all we can to eliminate obstacles standing in the way of that.”

Beginning this Spring RSU Public TV is launching the “Distance Learning Channel” on the stations second subchannel 35.2. The station will carry 30 hours of concurrent college credited classes. Some classes will be aired live with additional re-airings built into the broadcast schedule. High school students can enroll in college classes and earn college credit from the comfort of their living room by watching the classes over RSU Public TV’s 35.2 channel. Royal Aills General Manager of RSU Public TV says, “One of the things we know is this, in times like these our mission to serve the public is paramount. Like public schools, public TV means working together for the greater good of our students, families and communities.” High speed internet is not an option for most of our rural areas. According to the FCC Fewer than half of Oklahoma’s rural residents have access to highspeed internet – one of the lowest percentages of any state. RSU Public TV’s option of over the air on 35.2 is valid. In today’s world how these students are interconnected is a necessity. We want to make these classes accessible to everyone especially the underserved who don’t have access to high speed internet. “This offering of concurrent courses is a necessary step in reaching students who otherwise

DISTANCE LEARNING CHANNEL CONTINUED... wouldn’t be able to access the teachings through the internet,” said RSU President Dr. Larry Rice. “We are proud of the courses our faculty and RSUTV have produced and appreciate the partnership we have with the Cherokee Nation.” However, that’s only one possible platform. The other involves ONENET, a digital communications initiative of the State Regents for Higher Education and Oklahoma’s only statewide internet service provider. The station is in discussions with ONENET now to be a partner with Rogers State University and RSU Public TV by providing a direct feed of these Concurrent Classes to all high schools in our 22-county footprint of RSU’s service area. Aills

says, “Since our terrestrial (antenna signal) does not reach the entire TV market we are asking for ONENET assistance. We will be working directly with each school to provide a room and time for enrollees to take the classes during the day. ONENET’s assistance with this will make this a direct feed to each school in all of our rural 22 counties.” Concurrent classes on broadcast will begin in the Spring Semester of 2020 with the classes Intro to Psychology, American Federal Government, and Cherokee 1 available.

Studio 66

A new season of Studio 66 kicks off October 16! Preparation for this new season started in February with the production team spending two weeks building of a new set that would reect the wider variety of music genres that would be featured. And despite the unexpected interruption of the Covid-19 pandemic RSU-TV they were able to record seven all new episodes featuring local artists Alaska and Madi, R&B singer Calvin McGriff, the country rock sound of Travis Kidd, Americana singer Melissa Hembree, Rock band Acoustic Freight Train, Singer songwriter Jason Ford, and alternative rock band The New Time Zones. Watch Season 2 of Studio 66 Friday nights at 8:30 beginning October 16th on RSU Public TV.
