Alternative to Back Surgery By Deanna Rebro Sometimes not feeling anything can be worse than pain. Clint Mitchell can tell you. The 20-year American Airlines mechanic knows all about pain. He has totaled several vehicles and dropped as many motorcycles. Pain? Sure. But he just took the licking and kept on ticking. A few pain pills now and then made life easier. Lower back pain had been a constant part of his life for a long time. But then he noticed something different. While carrying heavy parts up the long ramps to aircraft, his legs would suddenly become numb. That would be frightening to anyone 15 feet above a cement floor. And 10-hour work shifts didn’t help the matter. Clint knew he had to do something or he would be in serious trouble. He decided to schedule an appointment with his general practitioner. A
CT scan confirmed the doctor’s suspicion; Clint had a herniated disc. A lateral tear was causing the disc to bulge out and apply pressure to nerves in his spine. Although the situation was not debilitating, it was serious. And likely to worsen, his doctor warned. He may even require surgery at some point. That was Clint’s wake-up call. He would have no surgery! Too many people had told him about their back surgeries, and how they wish they had never gone through with them. Once under the knife, their bodies were never the same. And the difference was anything but positive. Some said they underwent additional surgeries to relieve the pain. But they didn’t work. If they had only known about spinal decompression, they would have given it a try before resorting to surgery. Fair enough, he thought. Somewhere among the hundreds
of conversations he had with back pain sufferers, the name Spinal Decompression of Oklahoma was mentioned. He gave them a call and set up an initial consultation with Dr. Dwight Korgan. “I was amazed,” said Clint. “From the first moment I walked in, everyone treated me like I was a person they cared about. Not just another number on their books, but somebody who had a problem and they were there to help.” Clint recalls they were very busy that day. Yet Dr. Korgan answered all his questions – and there were lots of them – without any rushing. “I had never been treated this way before in a doctor’s office,” he said. “It just blew me away.” Soon Clint was in for his first decompression treatment. Hot packs warmed the muscles and got them ready to stretch. The (continued on page 24)

In honor of tea lovers everywhere, Margo Stewart recently introduced a line of teapot themed jewelry to the gift shop at The Pink House.
Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “Love of beauty is taste. The creation of beauty is art.” The fact that Pink House owner Margo Stewart has taste is obvious to anyone who has a meal at the restaurant. And she can truly be called an artist, as she and her staff create a beautiful and hospitable atmosphere for their guests every day. The restaurant itself is housed in a lovely old home, a historic Claremore landmark, and as with anything truly beautiful, it radiates its light from the inside out. Margo and her staff are full of joy and warmth that overflow and infuse the room, making guests feel as if they have truly arrived home. The dining room at The Pink House is open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and guests are offered an eclectic selection from an extensive menu. Choices include light and delicious salads, scrumptious sandwiches and wraps, and warm and tasty soups of the day. The Pink House is famous for their selection of quiches, each served with green salad, fresh fruit and fruit dip, and a delectable piece of banana bread. ASK THE MONEY MAVEN STRAIGHT-FORWARD, NO-NONSENSE TALK ABOUT YOUR MONEY
For Advertising Information, call
Yours, Mine, and Ours. BY MELANIE HASTYGRANT June has historically been the most popular wedding month of the year. Whether you’re just now getting hitched or you have been for a long time, to combine your finances or have separate accounts is a sticky ball of wax with which lots of couples struggle. In fact, it was one of the top causes of marital problems that I dealt with as a therapist many years ago. Now just for the record, my husband and I have been together for nearly 30 years. We got married while in college and were broke. We have always had shared/combined accounts. All income and all debt has been shared by both of us equally regardless of who was making more money throughout the years. This has worked well for us and I can’t imagine doing it any different. However, it does require a lot of work. As with many other areas of relationships, it requires good communication. It requires talking about shared financial goals, setting limits on expenses, and trusting each other. It means being accountable to each other, following through on commitments and being willing to share. It doesn’t come without a few bumps in the road and an argument here or there. When couples are willing to talk about the hard stuff and work through to successful conclusions, it strengthens the relationship. When they have difficulty fighting fair, being honest, and sharing, it can be
very hard. So it is…with the subject of money and all other aspects of a relationship. Now over the years, I have noticed an interesting trend. More and more young, first-time couples and older second marriage couples are choosing to have separate accounts. Sometimes, they tell me they have a joint account that they pay household bills out of and then individual accounts for their “play” money. The joint account is funded by each person with an agreed upon amount each month. This account is used to pay the mortgage, utilities, insurances, etc. that the couple share. However, the individual accounts are often used to pay for food, entertainment, gifts and miscellaneous purchases. There is always more than one way to “skin a cat” as my mom used to say. (That’s a funny saying isn’t it? Who the heck ever skins cats?) Anyway, couples that use this strat-

egy often report that they do it this way so that they don’t have to fight about money. They also tell me that they feel safer this way should something happen to their relationship. They don’t have to “ask” their partner about things they want to buy with their own money. Basically, what they are telling me is that they don’t want to take the risk of dealing with this difficult topic in their relationship. They are worried about not being able to communicate and effectively resolve conflict they might have in this area. It is an attempt to eliminate an area that might become problematic. I must say that I understand and respect the notion of trying to head off problems before they arise. However, I must submit that I’m not sure that avoiding something that is this intertwined in our daily lives is possible in an intimate relationship. My experience in working with couples has been that it just trades one set of emotions, and problems, and issues to deal with for another set. At the end of the day, it’s about learning (no matter how difficult) to communicate and share and trust in all areas of our relationships, including money. TThe Price of Depression… The clock is ticking. Don’t lessen your odds of recovery.
By Duane Blankenship Dr. Jeff McIlroy has served Strength of Mind as Chief of Psychiatry since its founding in 2004. The group’s purpose is to provide a ready response to those in need of outpatient behavioral health care and their goal is to make psychiatry innovative, effective and accessible. “By using diverse, personalized and comprehensive treatment
methods,” says Dr. McIlroy, “Strength of Mind meets a variety of patients’ needs at any age.” Strength of Mind was the first in Tulsa to provide TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation). TMS therapy is an FDA approved, non-invasive medical treatment for major depression. The treatment gives direct MRI strength magnetic
pulse stimulation to the frontal lobe of the brain compelling neurons to start firing which leads to restoring the brain to normal functioning levels while elevating moods and encouraging ambition. Insurance companies that currently cover TMS treatment at Strength of Mind include Blue Cross Blue Shield, Federal, Anthem, BCBS-OK, Medicare, United Behavioral Health, Community Care Oklahoma and Value Options. “The price of depression is staggering,” says Dr. McIlroy. “It affects your family, friends, employer, employees and, of course, you. Depression leads to decreased mood, initiative and drive. It brings about indecisiveness about life while healthy development, jobs, hobbies and relationships come to a halt. The result is dissatisfaction with life in general, decreased physical activity, leading to poor internal health and stamina. Thus fat content goes up, efficiency of heart beats go down. The risk of strokes and diabetes rises.” With depression, the clock is ticking. “Research shows that parts of the brain, such as where
memories are stored, actually shrink.” says Dr. McIlroy. “The likelihood of recovery continues to decrease the longer a depressed individual waits to see a specialist.” In other words, the longer you remain depressed, the harder it is to come out of it. The good news is that there is help through TMS. Dr. McIlroy explained that Strength of Mind has much to offer through a three-pronged approach to treating depression with TMS. “(1) We wake up the brain with direct stimulation in areas that pills have not been able to touch. (2) We use therapeutic fitness to engage the body while the brain is in a state of readiness. (3) We change patient behavior. This is what makes our treatment so unique; we treat the whole person.”
Research has shown Dr. McIlroy’s group that while physical activity is a powerful tool in treating depression, exercise is the last thing a depressed person wants to do. “This typically leads to listlessness, inactivity and remaining out of shape,” said Dr. McIlroy. “Strength of Mind’s solution is one-on-one therapeutic fitness to get the body moving, the result of which is a boost to the recovery process. And there have been no medical side effects with our TMS treatment,” added Dr. McIlroy. The Strength of Mind team forms a partnership with each patient in the journey to regaining quality of life. Their goal is to restore health and help each patient rediscover a life free from depression.
Dr. Jeff McIlroy, Chief of Psychiatry for Strength of Mind, says their TMS treatment is a three-pronged approach to treating and recovering from depression.

While some may take for granted a new backpack filled with crayons, pencils, pens, notebook paper, notebooks and other school supplies, many students might be returning to school next month empty handed if it were not for the benevolence of Rogers County citizens and businesses who donate their money and time to ensure no child is unprepared for class. Seventeen years ago, members of the Claremore First United Methodist Church stepped up
to help those less fortunate by providing what each child would need to get off to a good start. “Many students won’t have the luxury of starting school prepared with supplies because their parents can’t afford them,” says Ray Dawson, program coordinator. “Students need the right supplies to go back to school prepared to learn. The learning tools we take for granted can become an added burden to an already stretched family budget.” Last year, the Rogers County School Supply Drive, which is
Volunteers unload supplies at Claremore FUMC in preparation for the annual Rogers County School Supply Drive. This will be the 18th year for the program, which provides the necessary school supplies to any needy public school student in Rogers County.
Volunteers prepare school supply bags for those in need. Ray Dawson, program administrator, is pictured in the blue T-shirt. “All funds donated go directly to the purchase of supplies with the program being administered completely by volunteers,” he says. coordinated by the church, provided supplies for 3,057 needy children in the county, an increase of 156 children from the previous year. In 2014, children in the following Rogers County schools received assistance through the generous donations of others: Catoosa—185 Chelsea—343; Claremore—1,428; Foyil—256; Inola—139; Justus-Tiawah—145; Oologah—182; Sequoyah—278; Verdigris—101. “Last year,” says Dawson, “we were able to keep the average cost per child at $15.12 for a total of $46,206.58. Although our church administers the program, we couldn’t do it without the help of many generous churches, individuals, businesses and civic organizations who donate money to help us purchase the supplies each year,” he stresses. “The number of children seeking help has grown steadily each year since
the program began.” According to Dawson, every cent donated to the program is used to buy school supplies at the best possible price using a bid sheet to purchase from several suppliers depending on who has the best price. Volunteers do all the work and the church allows the use of their children’s center to pack and distribute the supplies. “We have set our goal for the 2015-2016 year at $50,000. The initial order for supplies must be placed in early July to receive them in time to distribute by August 1, so we can only estimate what the needs will be. We won’t have the funds when we order, but for 17 years, God has supplied them before the bills come due,” Dawson adds. “When a child starts school without needed supplies,” says Dr. Ray Crawford, senior FUMC pastor, “they are behind before the first bell even rings. Help a child be
successful in school and you will help them be successful in life.” Any individual, civic organization, church or business wishing to help defray the costs of this program, can mail a taxdeductible contribution to First United Methodist Church with a notation on the memo line, “school supplies.” The church mailing address is 1615 N. Advances in Technology Bring Increased Security and Convenience Independent security and communications technology business puts customers in control.
By Christopher Davis Summer is here – the season for vacations and lake adventures. But while you’re out playing, is your home safe? Did you remember to adjust the thermostat? DLSS Systems and Tel-Star Technologies offer security and network systems that allow home and business owners to keep tabs on their property from a smartphone. DLSS Systems and TelStar Technologies are partner businesses that operate as two squads of the same team. Mike Eubanks and Kevin Dyson, co-owners, are longtime friends who established themselves
with larger companies long ago. As technology evolved and the industry became increasingly consolidated, they discovered a growing number of customers falling through the cracks when it came to customer service and specific needs. Since the late ’90s, DLSS and Tel-Star Technologies have provided stellar communications, lighting and surveillance systems to a diverse roster, spanning casinos, small businesses and private residences. Kevin Dyson, head of DLSS, has seen surveillance technology go from clunky cameras and stacks of VHS tapes to inconspicuous digital cameras and cloud-based
archives. “The technology has come a long way,” says Dyson, noting that customers can save thousands of dollars on superior equipment compared to industry standards of the previous era. Today, security and surveillance equipment is faster, less costly and more reliable, considering improvements in connectivity and archival storage and retrieval. Powered by Alarm. com, an industry leader in surveillance technology, DLSS was ahead of the curve, featuring such systems long before they became widespread. Today, DLSS systems include 24/7 response, fire alarms, Wi-Fi cameras, cloud video storage

and mobile monitoring apps for smartphone and tablet. Dyson explains, “You can watch camera feeds in real time from your smartphone, tablet or PC. And the footage is automatically stored in the cloud for ninety days.” The convenience of checking in on one’s property while fishing or enjoying a campfire is enhanced by the security of cloud-based storage. Gone are worries of lost or stolen security footage, and access is limited to only those with explicit permission. Further, security systems don’t even rely on phone lines anymore. Systems are completely self-contained and communicate directly with the control center, adding another layer of security and convenience. Such perks are ideal for rural properties and vacation homes. In fact, last fall, DLSS and Tel-Star Technologies opened a new office in Grove with rural markets in mind. “We’re the only security system company with an office in the region,” notes Dyson. The office is staffed every day, continuing a tradition of serving customers often overlooked by larger companies. The expanded service area improves accessibility for home and business owners who would otherwise find it difficult to obtain swift installation of security systems
from certified experts. And service does not end with security. For all communications and connectivity needs, including high speed Internet service and “smart home” connectivity, Tel-Star Technologies is the perfect match. Utilizing smartphone or tablet apps, lighting, heating and cooling – even irrigation control – is right in the palm of your hand. Technology improvements translate to energy – and money – savings. The added convenience is a welcome bonus. Those who invest in DLSS and Tel-Star Technologies services gain peace of mind, too. Even from across the country, checking in on the safety of property or turning off the sprinklers as a storm rolls in is only a few screen taps away. To embrace the latest technology in home and business connectivity, contact DLSS and Tel-Star Technologies. For more information, contact

Five Things Parents Should Do to Shape Money-Smart Kids
Financially Fit is a column published by RCB Bank to help you gain knowledge on all things financial. Fitness guides – RCB Bank professionals in the field – offer ideas to help you strengthen your money sense, customize savings training, and provide quick and easy action plans to start whipping your money into shape. By Steve Elliott, RCB Bank VP Loan Officer, and father of two The goal most parents have for their kids is that they will grow up and become educated, welladjusted contributing members of society. Let’s face it, we’ll settle for out of the house and paying their bills. So, how can we help our kids learn money smarts? The single biggest equation in life is how to make money. Good careers require good educations, be it a college degree or technical training. Good educations open doors to good money, and that is when making the right decisions with your money (and teaching your kids to do the same) solves the equation. Here are my top five things every parent should do, right now, to prepare their kids to manage their money. Number five: Talk about money. It surprises me how little kids know about money, especially teenagers. They don’t understand how everyday finances operate,

Strive for Excellence Heritage Adventist Academy in Claremore is now enrolling for the 2015-2016 school year. By Sheryl Sowell Heritage Adventist Academy in Claremore offers a Christ centered curriculum to students in kindergarten through eighth grade. The mission of the Adventist curriculum is to enable learners to develop a life of faith and to use their knowledge, skills and understandings to serve God and humanity. The vision is for every learner to excel in faith, learning and service, blending biblical truth and academic achievement to honor God and bless others. “The Adventist system has been implemented for over 100 years to help children
develop spiritually, emotionally, mentally, socially and physically,” says Dottie Herrod, principal and educator of Heritage Adventist Academy. The school opened in Claremore two years ago, serving 16 students. This year’s class size was 10 students, providing a small student/teacher ratio and allowing students to receive more individualized attention. Heritage is now enrolling for the next school year, which begins in August. The school is accredited by the Oklahoma Private School Accreditation Commission and the State of Oklahoma Department of Education, and NAD of Seventh-day Adventist certified. “The school is unique in that it is multi-grade, and lessons are based on the student’s progress – not their age or grade. For example, if a third grader excels in math, he will advance to higher level lessons, such as fourth or fifth grade math,” explains Herrod. “No child is held back, and each progresses at their own level. We encourage them to focus on their own talents and interests.” The Adventist worldview accepts the Bible as the standard by which everything else is measured, and all lessons are Christ centered. Lessons are also project based, rather than strictly lectures and worksheets. The students enjoy gymnastics at Gymnastics City once a week, choir twice per week, and regularly attend field trips. Past trips have included the Oklahoma Aquarium and the J.M. Davis Gun Museum. “We are like a family,” says Herrod. “We begin each day with worship and proceed with schoolwork on all core subjects, and everyone participates in recess and PE together. We learn together, pray together and play together!”
“Another important part of our program is that the students participate in outreach activities in the community,” adds Herrod. “Our anti-drug and anti-smoking puppet shows in public schools and local businesses are a fun way for our older students to demonstrate what they have learned about health and wellness. This school year, we plan to have choir performances at the Veterans’ Center and local nursing homes. We teach our students to be Christian stewards who give back to the community.” Dottie Herrod came to Claremore from Tennessee. This will be her twelfth year of teaching full-time, in addition to homeschooling her daughters for 11 years. She is excited for the upcoming school year and to welcome new and returning students. The Christian education offered at Heritage Adventist Academy is open to anyone who is interested. Call to find out about enrollment information for the 2015-2016 school year. This school year will be a four day week, Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

points out, “Although it keeps time, no one wants to inherit their grandfather’s cell phone.” Though Schultz, an admitted “people person,” is the face of The Clock Store, he works with three other clockmakers. Each has their own specialty. Schultz has a knack for quartz clocks, and has even retrofitted winding clocks with quartz assemblies for owners who have difficulty moving the components. He adds that the winding assembly can be held onto and later reinstalled when the time comes to pass it on. One of his partners specializes in anniversary clocks (which require winding about once per year). Another’s focus is grandfather (also known as tall case) clocks. And another clockmaker loves restoring and repairing cuckoo clocks. A lot goes into proper repair of clocks. It starts with an assessment of the nature of repair and quoting a cost estimate for the owner. Once Schultz has the approval to move forward, they execute the repairs, which may require ordering special parts or fabricating a replacement. Once the repair is complete, the clock moves into the regulation phase. This entails observation and making sure the clock actually keeps proper time, and might require more adjustments. After it has been verified the clock works properly, it is ready for pick up or delivery. While most clock repair shops might take anywhere from three to six months for service completion, The Clock Shop generally has a six to eight
Celebrate The Clock Store celebrates one year in business this month. From quartz to cuckoo, these clockmakers restore memories and keep traditions alive.
By Christopher Davis When Jonathan Schultz mentions he owns The Clock Store, he says the response is usually, “Hey – I got a clock.” The discussion then turns to the story behind the clock, which is just fine with Schultz. The story associated with each clock he meets is part of his passion for repairing them. “I love hearing about where a clock came from, learning who made it,” says Schultz, who has loved clocks ever since he was a young boy. In August, The Clock Store will celebrate its first anniversary of business. Located in Broken Arrow’s Rose District at Yesterday’s Antique Mall, the shop is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week. The Clock Store also has a second location in Bixby at Birdseye Treasure (at 151st and Memorial). Both locations sell restored clocks and provide full services for a wide range of clocks. “We don’t just repair clocks,” explains Schultz, “We restore memories.” And when one
steps back to think about the significance attached to a clock, it’s true. Most clocks are passed on from generation to generation, watching over family traditions and marking the minutes as little ones grow up. When an antique clock is adopted by a new family, part of the allure is the history it represents. While clocks are utilitarian in nature, there is something special about a wellmade clock. The design of the wood, the craftsmanship and the gears inside – clocks are works of art as much as timekeepers. Before televisions, and now computers, took over our living rooms, clocks served as a focal point in homes. Schultz says that between 1840 and 1950, millions of clocks were produced. Without dwelling too much on how ‘they just don’t make them like they used to,’ it is worth pointing out how clocks worthy of our love and attention are becoming rare. This is another reason Schultz is so passionate about clocks. He

AA Rock Show for the Ages
Tulsa Rock and Mineral Society holds annual Gem and Mineral Show at Tulsa County Fairgrounds Central Park Hall, July 11-12. By Christopher Davis Join the Tulsa Rock and Mineral Society for their annual Gem and Mineral Show at the Tulsa County Fairgrounds on July 11 and 12. The show serves as the organization’s largest fundraiser, supporting educational and enrichment programs for the community. The weekend-long exhibit provides an opportunity to experience the beauty and history of our planet. It also brings together vendors from across the region, offering choice specimens of gems and precious stones, jewelry, and related crafts and artifacts. “The show is a great way for rock hounds and newcomers to meet and share their passion for gems and minerals,” explains Julia Allande, show chair for 2015. She and her husband, Paulino Allande, are avid collectors of geodes, crystals and rare gems. When asked how they first developed a love of rock hounding, Julia describes helping family sort through heirlooms in storage. She recalls, “There was a rock collection amongst the things
headed to storage. We found ourselves setting aside some of our favorites. Next thing we knew, we had a nice little collection started.” But, as they started going on hiking trips and searching for their own finds, it wasn’t long before their collection outgrew their shelves. “We came across a store that had a going out of business sale,” she laughs. “They were selling some display cases, and we got a great deal on them.” Now, the Allandes have their own personal showcase for their finds. With the Tulsa Rock and Mineral Society, they help plan field trips and facilitate workshops for kids, which combine education with fun. Each month, the Rock and Mineral Society meets at College Hill Presbyterian Church, located near the University of Tulsa at 712 S. Columbia Ave. Meetings begin 6:15 p.m. on the second Monday of every month. Visitors and children are welcome. Prior to the general meeting, a social hour is held, along with “Pebble Pups,” which is an opportunity for kids to have some fun with rocks. “Kids love collecting crystals

and gems, and enjoy learning about how they were formed,” says Julia. Rock hounding can be a rewarding hobby. Participating in field trips is a great way for parents and children to get outside and enjoy nature together. At the same time, returning home with a few specimens is a bonus reward, providing a vehicle to create memories and share stories. Every piece is different and has its own story. Whether the rock was found along a trail or digging into the side of a mountain, it always feels special when one makes a discovery. Even when the rock is purchased, or passed on from person to person, there’s always an element of thrill when you lay eyes on the piece for the first time. In the Rock and Mineral Society’s case at College Hill Church, some representative samples and rarities are on display. Several types of quartz are shown, including “Smokey” and “Skeletal” varieties. Though each type is similar in basic molecular composition, the differences in temperature and pressure at the time of formation affect their color and grain pattern. One of the highlights of the display, a semi-precious stone known as lapis lazuli, has its origins in Afghanistan. Long ago, blue was a very rare color, and lapis was coveted for its deep azure hue. It is referenced in ancient literature, such as the Epic of Gilgamesh, and is often associated with royalty. It is worth attending a second Monday meeting just for the chance to view the specimen in person.
Paulino and Julia Allande, Show Chairs for the 2015 Gem and Mineral Show. At the show, plenty of activities will educate and entertain young and old. A free kids’ zone will feature hands-on opportunities to dig for gems, as well as demonstrations and other fun stuff. There will also be a booth where attendees can cut and polish their own gems. Admission to the Gem and Mineral Show is $6 for adults. Two day passes are $10. Children 12 years and younger (accompanied by a paying adult) are free. Scouts and military members in uniform receive free admission. The show takes place at Central Park Hall at the Tulsa
County Fairgrounds. Show hours are Saturday, July 11 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, July 12 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

R Reverse Mortgage an Option for Seniors By Joshua Danker-Dake If you are a homeowner 62 years of age or older, a reverse mortgage could be a great way for you to improve your cash flow and achieve greater financial stability as well as a more comfortable retirement. Bill Simms is a reverse mortgage specialist. “One of the goals people have is to be able to maintain a comfortable lifestyle,” he says. “And one of the biggest fears seniors have is that they will outlive their money. A reverse mortgage can be a tremendous help for them.” A reverse mortgage is available to anyone 62 years or older who is a homeowner and has equity in his or her home. “This is a HUD program,” says Simms, “and it’s FHA insured. This creates a safety factor for seniors.” A reverse mortgage can potentially solve a number of cash flow problems. “For seniors who need money or income, a reverse mortgage can be a good solution,” says Simms. “You can take the money as a lump sum or in monthly installments, establish a line of credit, or any combination of the three. The money received is nontaxable – it comes from the
principle of your home. When you get a reverse mortgage, there are no restrictions on how you use the money. And some tremendously good news is that recently, HUD is allowing the use of reverse mortgage funds to buy a home.” When homeowners take out reverse mortgages, they borrow a portion of the equity from their homes. “One tremendous advantage of this is that you don’t have to make any payments to the lender. However, the homeowners are still responsible for the payment of property taxes and homeowners' insurance," says Simms. There’s a misconception that when you take out a reverse mortgage, you lose the title of your house, but that’s not true at all. The house always stays in the homeowner’s name.” Simms is a certified senior advisor and has almost two decades of experience in this and related fields. “I’ve been helping seniors with their financial needs for 18 years,” says Simms. “I have experience with insurance and protection programs, and I’ve worked to resolve the needs of seniors. In the last few years, I’ve

And you can use the money from a reverse mortgage to pay off a loan or lien. “This is a good way to improve your cash flow by eliminating those monthly payments,” says Simms. “A reverse mortgage can be a useful tool for people who don’t want to take Social Security too early. It can also be an attractive option and a big help for people with dwindling 401(k)s.” If you think a reverse mortgage might be right for you or your parents, or if you want more information about reverse mortgages, call Bill Simms at (918) 852-5784.

Alternative to Back Surgery main component of IDD therapy utilizes a patented orthopedic decompression system called the Spina Machine, which promotes self-healing through gentle, effective decompression of the spine. Spinal Decompression of Oklahoma is the only physician directed Accu-Spina treatment in our area. “It didn’t hurt,” he says. “I could feel a little bit of a pull, but I just put on headsets and listened to music. There was nothing bad about it.” After about a month, Clint felt as good as new. That was more than a year ago, and Clint says all his discomfort is nearly gone. After the treatment series, he began doing the recommended exercises exactly as prescribed. He continues doing them to this day. Every few months someone from the Spinal Decompression staff calls to check

on his progress. “I can’t stress enough,” says Clint. “If anyone has back problems or disc problems, give Spinal Decompression of Oklahoma a try before surgery.” Spinal Decompression of Oklahoma is located at 1408 N. Taste the Delights continued from page 1 their signature casseroles, like the chicken enchilada or the chicken and broccoli, both of which give new meaning to the word “comfort food.” Desserts become their own works of art at The Pink House and include daily offers of chocolate and butterscotch layer desserts, coconut cream pie, and baked fudge. Special desserts also make guest appearances at The Pink House from time to time, like mandarin orange cake, bread pudding, and Italian crème cake. “Even though these are not always on the menu, we can make them on request,” says Margo. “If you will give us 24-hour notice, we will be sure to have that prepared for your visit. We are always happy to make your favorite!” During a typical lunch hour, the restaurant is filled with chatting groups at cozy black cloth covered tables, happily nibbling at a wonderful array of colorful and tasty foods from the menu. But the Pink House stretches its hospitality beyond the lunch hour, offering a wide variety of catering services for parties and events. The restaurant delivers made-toorder “lunch boxes” to local businesses, and hosts wedding and baby showers, birthday parties and receptions. Menu items are available for these events, as well as other party-perfect selections like finger sandwiches and pinwheels. “My favorite pinwheels are the jalapeno and cranberry,” says Margo. “They are yummy!” Just as they are well known for their
selection of many flavored teas, both hot and cold, they are renowned for hosting “teas,” or tea parties for special guests. In the spirit of the “tea,” The Pink House offers a nice selection of teas, teapots, and other tea related items in their gift shop. A list of parties, events, “teas,” and other catering opportunities are available in detail on their website at www.pinkhouseofclaremore.com. Whether she is hosting a lunch hour meal with friends or a tea party, shower or special event, Margo’s promise to her guests is to provide them with “a totally unique and relaxing dining experience, and the absolute perfect setting for creating memories that will last a lifetime.” And by doing just that, she proves herself to be a true artist, touching lives within her canvas, The Pink House of Claremore.

By Elizabeth Nash The phrase “Inspiring Gardeners to Create” has guided Sue Goetz’s life as a garden designer, writer and speaker. Based in Washington State, Sue is a certified professional horticulturist (CPH). She shares, “…a creative gardener…celebrates the garden for all of its uses.” Her personal passion is all about what the garden gives back. She encourages people to make discoveries in their own gardens. And that passion has awarded her gold medals at numerous flower and garden shows. Her home garden has been featured in “Northwest Home and Garden” magazine as well as “Country Gardens” magazine. And she has been highlighted in both “Sunset” and “Fine Gardening” magazines. Tulsa Herb Society is hosting Sue Goetz on Monday, July 13 at 7 p.m. as their annual

She will be sharing her passion for gardening and particularly her love of herbs. “I am an herb lover, but I am also a spa lover. When you put the two together, you have the start of a journey of delight.” Her book proposes: “It is all about relaxation in your own surroundings and using herbs from your garden to create a pleasurable, deeply beneficial experience.” One of the most beloved herbs – lavender – has shown in research studies that inhaling its essence actually forces a physical response which lowers blood pressure, heart rate and skin temperature. Sue will share her favorite herbs to plant in your garden and their healing properties. And her book shares 40-plus
