The programs include: the aforementioned U-Turn Academy, offering counseling and education for students on long-term suspension from school; BLAST, an after school program for grades 6-8; PAL, a mentoring program, matching public school students with caring adult mentors; and StepUp, a diversion program for juvenile first offenders. “Most long-term suspensions are due to students possessing drugs, alcohol or weapons at school. They are at a crossroads. Without intervention it is very likely that the student will not return to school after the suspension, or, if he or she does, he or she will ultimately drop out, having fallen behind academically and unequipped to handle things otherwise.”

he maxim provides: the best predictor of future behavior is past behavior. The U-Turn Academy of Volunteers for Youth is changing that when it comes to at-risk adolescents in Rogers County. U-Turn, now in its fifth year, has demonstrated a whopping 81% success rate in assisting at-risk students with a successful transition from a longterm suspension back into their home schools—oftentimes, ahead of schedule. John Killebrew, U-Turn Academy Project Director states: “Most long-term suspensions are due to students possessing drugs, alcohol or weapons at school. They are at a crossroads. Without intervention it is very likely that the student will not return to school after the suspension, or, if he or she does, he or she will ultimately drop out, having fallen behind academically and unequipped to handle things otherwise.” U-Turn fills these critical gaps. When a Rogers County school suspends a student age 12-18, the school may refer to U-Turn. U-Turn, then, determines whether the suspended student is a good match for services. Initially, the student and parent must meet with U-Turn to discuss the expectations of the program, as accountability is central to success. Once enrolled, the student is required to attend U-Turn during the scheduled hours each day to complete the assignments provided by the home school. Continual monitoring and support onsite by a certified instructor and paraprofessional occur, as do

weekly communications between U-Turn and the home school, ensuring advancement. The student also receives counseling by licensed therapists from Grand Lake Mental Health Center during school hours at no cost. Moreover, U-Turn provides wraparound services to the student and family via group and individual counseling throughout enrollment and monthly family nights which include dinner and a motivational guest speaker. While in attendance, the students participate in an extracurricular project. One such meaningful project is allowing the students to refurbish an old piece of furniture for the annual Volunteers for Youth Chair-ity Auction (this year’s event is on March 3). A battered and scarred piece, restored to a purposeful future is, in many ways, reflective of the lives transformed by the U-Turn program. Former students have even begun to return as adult mentors and volunteers to the program, evidence of the transformation. As successful as U-Turn has been, however, its future remains unpredictable. With the expiration of the original grant, U-Turn now exists solely on private donations. Therefore, donations are critical from would-be corporate sponsors and individuals, alike. Donate today to change a life!

We wanted to provide an opportunity for girls and their dads, or special male family members, to connect—an evening out with lots of pampering, no electronics, “ explains Herb McSpadden, Executive Director for Rogers County Youth Services (RCYS), “the ‘Me and My Guy Dance’ does just that!” The event, now in its eleventh year in Claremore, has grown substantially in popularity and attendance since its

This year, the theme for the event is “Mad Hatter’s Ball”, and the ballroom will be transformed into a magical wonderland. Everything from teacup centerpieces to a full candy bar will be onsite (with no peering ‘mom eyes’ to monitor the delectable intake). Girls of all ages are invited to come alongside a special male family member—a dad, grandfather, uncle—and dance the night away to tunes sure to suit all tastes and ages. As for the dress code, guests can arrive in a limo or bring the pickup truck, wear formal attire or Sunday best, from tuxedos to boots and jeans—the idea is to dress up and show up for an evening out. “The father-daughter bond is so important, and this is a chance to spend some time together, so we want everyone to be comfortable,”

states McSpadden. RCYS also needs corporate sponsorships for the dance which are available at varying levels. The donations are tax-deductible, of course, and contributors will receive public recognition. The proceeds from ticket sales as well as individual or corporate sponsorships go to serve a very important cause. RCYS operates a 6 bed emergency youth shelter for adolescents, ages 6 to 18,that have been removed from the home due b to t negligence, abuse or delinquency. The adolescents, while awaiting placement, receive 24 hour care, p including: i meals; clothing and necessities like winter coats and n gloves; transportation to and from school and school supplies; support and transportation for extracurricular activities; gifts if they are in residence during the holidays or their birthdays, etc. The shelter, essentially, serves as the home away from home while the youth are in transition, thus RCYS requires a great deal of financial support to provide the necessities and normalcy to the kids in the shelter. Don your best attire, grab your ‘date’ and head to the “Mad Hatter’s Ball” this year for a fabulous evening supporting a great cause!

The Sooner A The Better

BY DEANNA REBRO

thick, lush, head-turning landscape in the summer starts in winter. So much of caring for a lawn comes down to knowing what needs to be done and when to do it. The first step to a great yard is knowing who to call before spring. For the past 11 years, Sooner Lawn has been delivering a six-step lawn care program from early spring through fall that gets rid of weeds and nourishes grass so it will look good year-round. Owner and U.S. Army Captain Michael Bolton says that early spring is the best time to begin preparing your lawn. Sooner Lawn’s six-step program begins with an application of pre-emergent herbicide for crabgrass control, continues with additional weed control and fertilizers during spring and summer, and ends with a winterization weed control in the fall. While many homeowners treat their own lawns, the Sooner Lawn professionals take things to the next level. They treat lawns with the right formulations for that particular grass at the right times throughout the year for optimum results, applying lime to regulate proper soil ph to allow maximum effectiveness of fertilizers, and monitoring for insects and diseases. One of the hallmarks of Sooner Lawn is quick results. “We don’t have to tell our customers their lawns are getting better. They can see improvement each time we’re there,” says Michael. One customer, president and landscaping chairman of The Reserve at Battle Creek said, “The Reserve looks better that it has ever looked in the past, thanks to the Sooner crew. They are very professional and take great pride in their work. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a lawn care company.” Michael adds that Sooner Lawn’s prices are below most, if not all, other local lawn care companies. And their prompt and professional customer service goes above and beyond expectations. “We keep our customers happy by offering great service at a great price with great results. Just give us a chance to prove it,” he says.

A five-year customer echoes his comment. “We have found Michael’s work to be very good, as well as his pricing. We would highly recommend his services.” Sooner Lawn serves residential and commercial customers throughout Tulsa, Broken Arrow, Bixby, Jenks, Sand Springs, Owasso and Claremore. Optional services include fertilization of flowerbeds, aeration for more effective watering and nourishment, perimeter control, insect control of fleas, ticks, ants, spiders and chinch bugs, mole control, turf disease control and fescue seeding. They are fully licensed and insured, and all their recommended work is guaranteed. Sooner Lawn is also accredited with the Better Business Bureau. Preparation now will go a long way toward enjoying the healthy green lawn you want this summer. And you don’t have to lift a finger except to call Sooner Lawn.

T

he Oklahoma Arts Council recently announced the names of 14 individuals and five organizations that will be honored for their contributions to the arts in Oklahoma during the 42nd Governor’s Arts Awards on Feb. 28. Mark Frie, Tulsa Performing Arts Center Director and president of the ARTSOK Regional Arts Alliance of Broken Arrow, is among those being honored with the Arts In Education Award. Frie’s recognition comes from his involvement with the Kristin Chenoweth Arts & Education Fund. Together with the Emmy and Tony-winning actress, they developed the Broadway Boot Camp and Master Class programs to help aspiring entertainers learn the ropes of the performing arts world. For the past three years, students in grades 9-12 from across the state have auditioned to be in the camp and work one-on-one with Chenoweth and other entertainment professionals. In addition, Frie has been instrumental in helping the City of Broken Arrow to build and develop a creative arts center in the Rose District, meant to service under privileged students in after school programs. This endeavor is ongoing and will continue to evolve over the coming years. The awards will be presented during a special ceremony in the fourth floor rotunda at the Oklahoma state Capitol, followed by a reception outside the Betty Price Gallery on the Capitol’s first floor. Any questions about the ceremony can be directed to Joel Gavin of the Oklahoma Arts Council at 405-521-2037.

A Bucket Approach by Mary Wood, wealth advisor, RCB Bank Trust

Legendary investor Warren Buffett defines investing as “… the process of laying out money now to receive more money in the future.” The key to successful investing is setting clear-cut goals. Know what you want, the cost to get it and how long you have to save. We all have different comfort levels when it comes to investing our money. We call this risk tolerance. The concept of risk tolerance refers not only to your level of comfort in taking a risk, but also your financial ability to endure the consequences of loss. Therefore, when it comes to investing, there is no onesize-fits-all strategy. When I talk about investing with my clients, I like to use a bucket visualization. Imagine investing as three buckets. Everyone needs to begin with a foundation - bucket one. This is your readily available 20 |

VALUES

cash, including your savings, emergency fund and short-term investments. Once you have bucket one filled, you are ready to toss money into buckets two and three, your mid-term and longterm goals. The amount you invest in each bucket varies by your time horizon and risk tolerance. Bucket two consists of low-risk investments while bucket three is long-term, higher growth risk investments. As with any plan, it is important to monitor your portfolio to ensure you stay on track with your goals. If you plan to work with a financial advisor, make sure they are working for you with your best interest in mind. It’s important that you have an open line of communication with your advisor. I am here to help answer questions you may have about investing even if you are not an RCB Bank customer. Feel free to call me at 918.342.7100 or email mwood@bankrcb.net. DREAM MAKER BY AMY BETH DOBBINS

n its infancy, Tile by Tony, Inc. (TBT) was all about flooring. It has grown from its humble beginnings, however, to a fullservice contracting business. From colossal jobs of working with engineers and designers to reconfigure an older home into a modern-day open concept living space or remodeling a kitchen or bath to smaller jobs like patching a hole in sheetrock, repairing plumbing or trim work, TBT is able to handle it. A far cry from just a tile layer, the business now employs 15 people with varying expertise in every aspect of construction. There is more control over a project, more quality assurance in craftsmanship and skill than merely when a contractor

relies on his sub-contractors to finish a job. The cornerstone of TBT’s success lies in its repeat customers— customers for life— that have been treated to quality craftsmanship for a fair and reasonable price. Though the employees are highly skilled in each of their respective areas and the price for any job is fair and competitive with others in the market, Tony Sementi, Owner and CEO, attributes the amazing success and growth of TBT over the past 30 plus years to more than that. “It’s really not just comparing ‘apples to apples’. Remodeling a home means that a client will have strangers in and out

of his home daily for weeks or months at a time. A client must be able to trust them. You have to get people that will respect the clients’ homes. Our employees are top-notch and like family members.” Another difference is TBT’s belief in accessibility to the client and communication. “We are always accessible to answer client questions or explain things if clients have concerns along the way,” explains Sementi, “there are lots of steps along the way, and order in the way things are done in a construction project, and sometimes a client has concerns. We are able to explain things very quickly, making ourselves available for questions, so that a small construction issue doesn’t become a bigger one over time.” Construction is a process. “There are going to be obstacles, or waves, along the way,” explains Sementi, “the key is to choose a contractor that knows how to ride the waves and maneuver through it all. I’m a really good surfer,” muses

Sementi. In fact, Sementi personally visits each job site daily. As in the beginning, TBT continues to live up to its name, making available to the public a myriad of choices in flooring and installing same throughout Green Country. Now, TBT is proudly opening its new showroom, a place to dream of possibilities in your own home. With a design staff onsite, the displays help people envision a space better than simply trying to look at a few small samples at a big box store. Clients may order a nearly-endless possibility of products to suit any taste. “We are here to stay after over thirty years, and the opening of our new showroom goes to prove that we are invested in the community,” opines Sementi.

T

he idea of a fountain of youth goes back as far as history records have been kept. It is the talk of myths and legends dating back to at least the days of Alexander the Great. It is no surprise that many people the world over want to stay young and healthy as long as possible while maintaining their youthful energy. The Spanish explorer Ponce de Leon thought he would find this fountain in what is present day Florida, but even he would be shocked by what researchers found in only four known water springs today. Nobel Prize nominee Dr. Garth Nicolson, has been researching the properties of these water sources after hearing many claims these waters held healing benefits when people drank from it. These claims go back centuries, and even wealthy celebrities have been known to visit these unique springs for their special benefits. The question is, could these springs truly be some type of “fountain of youth” or healing water source? This started a journey of discovery unlike anything he could imagine. “What we found was amazing, and we knew this was a life changing discovery,” Nicolson says. What his research uncovered after multiple tests from these sources was shocking. The water samples taken revealed these springs have one specific element to the water not found anywhere else naturally on earth. These waters contain large amounts of hydrogen. According to Nobel Prize winning scientist Albert SzentGyörgyi, hydrogen is considered the most powerful known anti-oxidant on earth. The significance of this discovery revolutionizes everything we know about water and it’s relationship with anti-oxidants. The scientific studies demonstrating the benefits of antioxidants are unprecedented when it comes to the number of benefits. Some of these benefits are the protection of cells in the body from dangerous free radicals that age our cells. These free radicals oxidize our cells internally much the same way metals rust and apples turn brown when exposed to air. These free radicals are found in our environment and the food we eat everyday thus leading to increased aging of the body, with some becoming chronically ill. Drinking hydrogen enriched water, floods the cells of the body with anti-oxidants and protects them from the aging process. These anti-oxidants can also be found in a host of

fruits and vegetables, but water is the most effective delivery system for these anti-oxidants to reach our cells because of the molecular properties of hydrogen in the water. Japanese scientists have also taken note of this discovery, and the people of Japan experience some of the best health and longevity of any country in the world. One company has even pioneered a patented way to have this hydrogen rich anti-oxidant water for home use. The device was also awarded numerous patents world-wide, and has produced such great results it is even used in hospitals across Japan. It is estimated that as many as 20% of households in Japan now also use this exciting technology. Using their innovative process, anyone can now have access to this life changing water and experience the benefits. Many individuals that have struggled for years with the debilitating pain from gout, arthritis, inflammation, diabetes, fibromyalgia, high blood pressure, and a host of other issues have reported amazing benefits from drinking this unique water. Some have reported feeling younger and having more energy throughout the day. Others have reported healthier skin and hair after using this special water. After experiencing some of these benefits first hand Brent Nicholson and his wife Rhonda founded a local green country company called IO Pure. They are very passionate about helping others and spreading the word about this unique water “I find a lot of people are worried about what is in their water and whether it is safe to drink or not.” “I also find others are looking for relief from chronic issues like diabetes, high blood pressure, gout, and arthritis,” Brent says. He and his wife Rhonda are also giving away free samples of this exciting antioxidant water. If any of this sounds interesting, looks good, or just feels right, you can call 918-747-9100.
