Boots & Bling: MORE THAN JUST A DANCE

BY MELYNDA STONE

T

he guys will wear their boots and the girls will wear their bling the night of February 23rd when the 12th annual Me & My Guy Dance is held at Rogers State University’s Carolyn Taylor Center Ballroom. All dads (or important male figure) and daughters up through 12th grade may attend the event from 6-9 p.m. “What started in 2002 as a small community event to strengthen father-daughter relationships has grown into something that hundreds of area dads and daughters look forward to every year,” said Kendel Stocker, event chair. “My daughter is 18 and this will be her 12th and final year before college. She wouldn’t miss it,” said Kay Hering. “The Me & My guy dance gives fathers and father figures the

opportunity to set the standard for how they expect their girls to be treated on a date. When the father/father figure treats the young girl with respect and admiration, there’s a subtle message sent to the girls. Just as important, the dance gives them a memory that they will always look back on,” said RCYS Director Herb McSpadden. Thanks to the event sponsors, every daughter in attendance will receive a custom charm created to reflect the 2019 “Boots & Bling” theme and door prizes to be given out through the evening. Door prizes for the dads are a new addition to this year’s event. Cookies, punch, and professional photography will add to the festivities. Tickets are on sale now for $10 each, or $25 for 3. Tickets can be

EXHIBITORS & VENDORS:

TIME TO COME TOGETHER FOR THE

CLAREMORE HOME

& GARDEN SHOW BY TOM FINK

O

ne of northeast Oklahoma’s biggest expos to highlight all things home, lawn, and garden is returning to Rogers County this spring. But before the Claremore Home & Garden Show can open its doors, it’s still looking for local vendors to be a part of this annual event. “Vendors are definitely the life blood of these events – without our vendors, we wouldn’t have these shows, and there’s still time for people who might be interested in learning more about being an exhibitor to contact us and get

involved,” said Allison Burkhead, special events manager, Claremore Expo & Tourism Development. The Claremore Home & Garden Show is an annual event at which vendors from across the state converge to make their business, product, and/or services available to the public at one of the best-attended events of its kind in the region. “Being an exhibitor at this event is an ideal way to let people know within the Claremore and Rogers County communities that we offer all of the same services found, say, in Tulsa County,” Burkhead said. “By

becoming a vendor at this annual event, a person or business will get exposure to the public to show them that they don’t have to go outside the area to find some of the resources available to them locally. “Becoming a vendor is actually super easy,” she continued. “The applications, and the layout of the event site are on the website, or they can call me directly and I can send them the details. We do try to keep it as inexpensive as possible, in fact, most of our vendors find that appearing at this event is actually more economical for them than All ty All type pess of bussin inesse sess are invi in v ted d to par arti t cipa ate in th his i yea ar’ rs Cllarem arem mor ore e Home & Garde arrde de en n Sh how ow.

Setup time is on Thursday from noon to 8 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. – if it’s just kind of an informational thing and they want to bring a tablecloth to cover the table and set up their materials. They don’t have to come before the show – that’s up to them, and of course, we have a vendor hospitality room for them, which will have some snacks, drinks and those kind of things – this creates a private area for the vendors to enjoy a quick bite or a moment of relaxation away from the public.” Sponsorships for the event are still available, Burkhead said, and are being “actively sought.” “By becoming a sponsor, a business or industry is given extra exposure, appearing in our promotional

The Mens Shop

Helping men look good, feel good just in time for prom and wedding seasons

BY TOM FINK

W

hether you’re a man who needs to rent a tuxedo for a one-time special event, you’re in the market for a new suit or shopping for casualwear, Jerry Feese and Jim Timmerman at The Mens Shop in Claremore have the experience and the expertise to help you to look and feel your best. With prom season just a few months away and wedding season nearly upon us, now is the time to find the right look for your next special occasion.

“Prom and wedding seasons are coming up in the spring, so it’s important for people to come in early – sooner rather than later – to pick out their suit or tuxedo,” said Jerry Feese, store owner. “It’s always important to start looking early, especially for the prom, because every high school in the nation has their proms in the spring – March/ April, and there are just so many rentals out there. They get booked up, so the later you wait to get your tux, the less likely it is that the one you want might be available.” The Mens Shop offers rentals on some of the more recognizable brand names in groom’s attire and formalwear. “One good (tux) designer we offer is Michael Kors, which is an ultra slim or slim fit style tuxedo,” he said. “Another designer we use is Ike Behar, which makes a very nice tux – we probably offer over 40 different styles (of tuxedos) to choose from, and with regards to accessories, there are

ROGERS COUNTY FEBRUARY 2019

probably several hundred different combinations you could put together.” With so many options to choose from, Feese reasserted the importance of coming in early to reserve your tuxedo rental to help ensure its availability. “When someone comes in, first of all, we’ll take their measurements, and if we can help them decide what kind of tuxedo they’re wanting to wear, we can order it for them from our rental company, which is Jim’s Formal Wear – a fairly large, family-owned company out of Trenton, Illinois,” he said. “Their tuxedos and suits offer a flattering silhouette to compliment any gentleman’s size or shape, and big and tall sizes are available.” Now in its 50th year of operation, The Mens Shop in Claremore is locally-owned and offers casual and dress clothing, shoes and boots, as well as tuxedo and tuxedo accessory rentals and more. One common misconception about the business, Feese said, is that The Mens Shop only offers rental items, but men’s clothing items are available for purchase year-round. “Because we do so many weddings and tuxedo rentals, it’s easy for the public to assume that we’re solely a ‘clothing rental’ business, but

I get excited when I sell a suit to someone and it makes them feel better about themselves– that makes me feel good too.

Jerr Je rry y Fe F es ese, e,, own w er.

we sell things as well,” he laughed. “One of the more recognizable brand names we carry is Pendleton Sportswear and Home Goods – we carry their blankets, as well as their clothing. A lot of people might think of Pendleton as only being a fall/winter-type garment, but we also carry their products for the spring and summer – their shortsleeve cotton lines – which are comfortable and very stylish. “We offer Gold Toe and Burlington socks, ENRO and Haggar slacks, Wrangler jeans, Munsingwear

underwear, IZOD sportswear, Florsheim shoes, Nocona and Justin boots,” he said. “Also, we have a tailor to help the products fit the customer as well as possible, and we have a couple of suit designers who make suits for us – Caravelli is one brand, and Daniel Hechter is another – and of course, we carry Arrow shirts, Van Heusen shirts, Damon shirts and men’s accessory items.” Although men may generally be less inclined to shop for themselves, Feese said he and longtime employee Jim Timmerman take

great satisfaction in helping to ease the process of selecting the right outfit, suit, tuxedo or other items. “It’s always very satisfying to see someone come in, maybe uncertain at first, and go through the process, to find something that looks good on them, or to come in and pick up their tux – to have it fit nicely and it’s the color and look they’d anticipated – it just makes you feel good to have been a part of that,” he said. “I get excited when I sell a suit to someone and it makes them feel better about themselves – that makes me feel good too. “You know, we’ve done this for a little while – I’ve been here for 30 years – and I think we do a pretty good job at fitting most people, Jim even more so than I,” he said. “He truly works to ensure the customer has the best possible fit. He likes to take care of his customers. He takes tremendous pride in that.” The Mens Shop is located in the Ne-Mar Center in Claremore. They are open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday except on Thursdays they are open late until 8 p.m.

S

ervice Manager Cliff Koger recently released some exciting news, that South Pointe Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram Service Department is now open each day, Monday through Friday, until 12:00 midnight. This makes the service opportunity window accommodating to most anyone. “For many customers it is just near impossible to find time to bring vehicles in for service or recommended maintenance,” explained Koger. “Our staying open until midnight five days a week throughout the year opens the door to a welcomed convenience for our valued customers.” You could now drop your car off for service on your way to church Wednesday evening and pick it up

on your way home. Or if you can’t deliver your vehicle to the Service Department before beginning work, just drop it off any evening and pick it up after work the next day. “Large or small businesses operating service fleets have welcomed the news with open arms,” said Koger. “They will now be able to bring business vehicles in when they are out of service and hit the streets the next morning.” Residents and travelers having automotive problems on local streets or highways will have a safe and secure place to leave vehicles overnight while getting needed services. Cliff ’s professional Service Advisors are the faces of the department. “They make a first impression on each customer as he or she approaches the Service Desk,” explains Koger. “And during that

first contact the stage is often set for a trusting, long-lasting relationship. “Our great team of Factory Certified Service Technicians utilizes the finest tools and software available today,” added Koger. “While your vehicle is in service, customers may call their Advisor for status information and even receive technician notes on details and progress. All this convenience while the Advisor never has to leave the drive. Between our professional Team, our Techs and the equipment available to them, I feel we are a step above the competition.” “Total customer satisfaction is our goal,” says Koger, “and happy customers make us happy. The aim is to fix any problem correctly the first time, each time you visit.” There are a lot of smiles in this Service Department making customers feel welcome.

On every visit, your vehicle receives a free visual inspection. You also receive a printed report reminding you of maintenance schedules and informing you of anything you should know about your vehicle based upon its time spent on the road. If needed, a treatment plan will be recommended. The report is easy to understand with ratings of Pass, Caution or Fail so you’ll know if additional attention is needed.

“TOTAL CUSTOMER SATISFACTION IS OUR GOAL, AND HAPPY CUSTOMERS MAKE US HAPPY.” The Multi-Point Inspection includes items like tire tread depth, condition of hoses and clamps, brake lining thickness, drive belts, battery terminals and cables, and a windshield inspection for cracks, chips or pitting. A tech’s report will also include items like engine, transmission and cooling system inspections. Tire pressure will be

checked and adjusted if needed. This is a very thorough bumper-tobumper inspection of your vehicle. If there is a recommendation for further service, the report will include a list of labor and material costs with an explanation to help you understand the reasons for the recommended services. Again, your safety and confidence is the goal and this report is provided to ensure peace of mind and understanding of your car’s operating state. You may make an appointment online with the Service Department or give them a call. Once your vehicle is in the system, you choose to receive maintenance reminders by email, regular mail or by phone. After one month, any new or used vehicle you’ve purchased from South Pointe is invited in for a free wash and checkup. Koger also spoke of a program available to customers who require help paying for their automotive repairs. CFS (Confident Financial Solutions) is available to anyone 18 years or older who has a valid email address and resides in a state where CFS is licensed to do business. Applicants apply online at www. mycfsapp.com. In minutes they receive a credit decision and Cliff indicates that the approval rate is high. She offices in Tulsa and specializes in innovative life and health coverage solutions for selfemployed individuals, families, small business owners and their employees. “The health coverage plans we offer are quite unique. Instead of presenting our clients with a selection of hard and fast plans and asking them to select the one which best fits their needs,” says Becky, “we ask our customers to tell us what they feel they need. We then make recommendations and write a plan which addresses their concerns. “Many customers begin with plan basics and add to it as their lives change over the years. Our plan designs are flexible to help you get the coverage you need, when you

need it…and at a premium you can afford.” As you grow older or conditions change, USHEALTH Advisors will assist you in choosing optional supplemental coverage to enhance your overall protection in areas including, for example, Critical Illness*, Accident*, Dental*, Accident Disability Income*, Life Insurance* and Vision Insurance*. Schroeder said, “taking a sample of your soil to the OSU Extension office or your local county agent is oftentimes the simplest method for soil testing.” “Earliest planting begins in February,” Schroeder said, “and continues through June. You can plant fall gardens July through September dependent upon your selection of what you wish to grow.” “Of the ‘cold season crops’, those would include potatoes, onions, all of the leafy products such as lettuce, underground carrots, spinach, and peas,” he said, “and for the ‘warm season crops’, that would include the likes of okra, cowpeas, watermelon – those aren’t planted until at least after May, and of course there are

Proper Care and Personalized Service, Delivered. WaterStone is dedicated to caring properly for your fine garments. BY TOM FINK

W

e all lead busy lives. WaterStone Dry Cleaners knows this full well and wants to help simplify your life by saving you the inconvenience of having to take the time to make a trip to the dry cleaners. With WaterStone, the dry cleaner comes to you. A full-service dry cleaner and laundry, Waterstone offers valet pick up and delivery service from and to your home or business, with an attention to detail and quality service. WaterStone founder Jeff Waters has nearly 30 years total experience in the cleaning industry, more than a decade of which has been at the business he owns with his wife, Shelly. “We’ll be 13 years in the business in January, which we actually started as strictly valet – pick up and delivery to people’s homes – that was the initial business, and we operated in that format for about two years,” Waters said. “We marketed door-to-door and would put customers on a regular schedule, either a Monday/Thursday or a Tuesday/Friday schedule, and we still do that, but at some point, our customers told us they were very happy with what we did, but they wanted another outlet. “So, after starting the business in 2006 and seeing it grow so rapidly, we added our operation in Owasso in

April of 2008,” he said. “We live in Owasso and know a lot of people in the area, so it made sense for us to start our business there.” Although, until recently, WaterStone only had the Owasso location, they had customers throughout Tulsa and the Tulsa metro area, including Jenks,

ROGERS COUNTY FEBRUARY 2019

Glenpool, Broken Arrow, Bixby, all of whom were serviced with the valet pick up and delivery. “Over time, some of our south Tulsa customers began expressing an interest in having some kind of outlet a little closer to where they are, to have a drop-off location where they could get same day service – so that if they bring an item in by 9 in the morning, they could pick it up later that same day – including Saturday,” he said. “Because we had customers asking for this, we finally relented and agreed to have an additional location – at 92nd and Sheridan – where they could use our service on a day that’s not regularly scheduled.” Waters said he attributed the business’s growth and expansion to WaterStone’s exceptional customers service and work quality. One of the particular strengths of the south Tulsa location is an employee named Crystal. “Crystal is no stranger to the (dry JJeff e and She h llly Wate ers, rs ow wners of Watter e St Ston o e Dry Cleaners rs.

cleaning) business in Tulsa,” he said. “We’re very pleased to have her on board here. She has years of experience in the Tulsa area and is well-known for taking care of her customers. If you become a customer here, Crystal personally feels like you are her responsibility. She provides her customers world class service.” “I’m going on my 12th year of customer service in the dry cleaning business,” she said, “and once you become a customer, I’m going to do whatever it takes to take care of you. Many of the people who know me through my work have known me for years, they’ve seen my kids grow up and since I live in south Tulsa, I’ll run into my customers outside of work all the time.” “It’s one thing to work somewhere and take care of business there, but when you live in the city where you also work, you have an added incentive to take extra care of those customers because you’re all the more invested in the community,” Waters said. WaterStone Dry Cleaners offers traditional dry cleaning and laundry, shirt service, cleaning household items such as comforters and quilts, shoe shining, alterations, and offers a 24-hour drop-off window for the convenience of the customer. WaterStone also uses environmentally-friendly chemicals in its cleaning of garments, recycling all the hangers and plastic which are brought in – even those of competitors, and they handle leather items, formal wear such as tuxedos and wedding dresses.

“One thing that sets us apart from our competitors is our mindset about what we do,” he said. “We all have a servant’s mindset. We’re here to serve the customer, first and foremost, and I know I take it very personally should I ever hear that we’ve provided anything less than perfect service for someone, it bothers me, it bothers Crystal. “Another thing that sets us apart, I think, is that I’m in the business every day,” he continued. “I’m not an absentee owner – this is my life, this is my livelihood and the livelihood for the people who work here. I want to do everything I can to make it a success. If a customer needs something, we’ll just do whatever we have to do to try and make it happen.” All items are barcoded for identification, with the garment and owner’s specifications kept on record. When a customer’s order is ready, they receive a notification text. Should the customer then decide they would rather have the item delivered, WaterStone can accommodate them, even if that was not the original agreement. “A couple of Saturdays ago, we got a call from a customer who dropped an item off at the Tulsa location, and later asked if we could deliver it to them, giving us a narrow delivery window,” he said. “So I left the Owasso store, came here, “If a customer needs something, picked the item up and took it to the we’ll just do whatever we have to customer’s house.” “And that was do to try and make it happen.” Thanksgiving weekend, by the way,” Crystal added.

Crystall belileves tha hatt pe p rsonal serv se r ice e and attent nttio ion n to to detail ar are key at Wat ke a er e stone Dr D y Cleane ne ers.

“Oh, that’s right – I forgot about that,” Waters said. “There are other examples – we’ve had weather events where we’ve had to close and I would get a call or text from a customer at 10:00 at night, telling me they couldn’t come to get their items (because of the weather) but they needed them before an early morning flight. So, we worked it out and we made arrangements to go down to the shop, unlock the door and take care of them outside or normal hours – I know that’s not the case with anybody else.” “Once people come in and get to know us, allow us to do some work for them, they realize we provide a good quality product at a price that’s either less than or equal to what other dry cleaners are providing,” he said. WaterStone Dry Cleaners has two locations, one in South Tulsa at 92nd and Sheridan, and one in Owasso at 96th and Garnett. It also helps me, because we take in between 75 and 150 clocks a month.” Although Schultz says there’s “no typical turnaround” on a project, noting many of the clocks he receives are over 100 years old, he said he prides himself on being able to get to and repair clocks anywhere from four to eight weeks – compared to six to eight months of many of his competitors. “And if I can look at a clock and fix it while the customer is waiting, I won’t even charge them for it,” he added, smiling. “The thing about us is we’ll fix just about anything. There are these rhythm clocks, they move around, have motion to them, and you can’t get parts for them – once they break, they’re broken – we

The Sooner A The Better

thick, lush, head-turning landscape in the summer starts in winter. So much of caring for a lawn comes down to knowing what needs to be done and when to do it. The first step to a great yard is knowing who to call before spring. For the past 11 years, Sooner Lawn BY DEANNA REBRO has been delivering a six-step lawn care program from early spring through fall that gets rid of weeds and nourishes grass so it will look good year-round. Owner and U.S. Army Captain Michael Bolton says that early spring is the best time to begin preparing your lawn. Sooner Lawn’s six-step program begins with an application of pre-emergent herbicide for crabgrass control, continues with additional weed control and fertilizers during spring and summer, and ends with a winterization weed control in the fall. While many homeowners treat their own lawns, the Sooner Lawn professionals take things to the next level. They treat lawns with the right formulations for that particular grass at the right times throughout the year for optimum results, applying lime to regulate proper soil ph to allow maximum effectiveness of fertilizers, and monitoring for insects and diseases. One of the hallmarks of Sooner Lawn is quick results. “We don’t have to tell our customers their lawns are getting better. They can see improvement each time we’re there,” says Michael. One customer, president and landscaping chairman of The Reserve at Battle Creek said, “The Reserve looks better that it has ever looked in the past, thanks to the Sooner crew. They are very professional and take great pride in their work. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a lawn care company.” Michael adds that Sooner Lawn’s prices are below most, if not all, other local lawn care companies. And their prompt and professional customer service goes above and beyond expectations. “We keep our customers happy by offering great service at a

great price with great results. Just give us a chance to prove it,” he says. A five-year customer echoes his comment. “We have found Michael’s work to be very good, as well as his pricing. We would highly recommend his services.” Sooner Lawn serves residential and commercial customers throughout Tulsa, Broken Arrow, Bixby, Jenks, Sand Springs, Owasso and Claremore. Optional services include fertilization of flowerbeds, aeration for more effective watering and nourishment, perimeter control, insect control of fleas, ticks, ants, spiders and chinch bugs, mole control, turf disease control and fescue seeding. They are fully licensed and insured, and all their recommended work is guaranteed. Sooner Lawn is also accredited with the Better Business Bureau. Preparation now will go a long way toward enjoying the healthy green lawn you want this summer. And you don’t have to lift a finger except to call Sooner Lawn.

ROGERS COUNTY FEBRUARY 2019

BY SHANNON SMITH

I

’m Shannon Smith, creator of Beads And Basil, a website where I share my travel adventures, cooking experiences, jewelry creations, life stories, world travels, recipes, cooking classes, and jewelry art. In the past ten years I’ve traveled to 44 countries, and I hope to add at least that many more over the next ten years. In every country, I am blessed to meet interesting people, learn new cultures, and try all kinds of delicious food. I take cooking classes, join food tours, meet with chefs, and often dine with people in their homes or restaurant kitchens. I’ve lived in Tulsa for 30 years, and I love teaching people how to cook, especially dishes learned while traveling around the world. Some of my favorite cuisines are Indian, Moroccan, Turkish, Israeli, and Italian, although Indian is the cuisine that makes me the happiest. I’ve collected numerous recipes and methods for making delicious food, and I share those recipes on beadsandbasil.com. I teach classes several times a month when my travels allow. Those classes

Shaved Brussels Sprouts Salad Serves 8-10 Salad

• 3 pounds raw Brussels sprouts, finely shredded on a mandolin or in a food processor • 2 stalks of celery, sliced very thinly • 2 shallots, sliced very thinly • 2 green onions, chopped • 2 tbsp. toasted pine nuts

Dressing:

• • • • • • •

2 tbsp. white wine vinegar 2 tbsp. pomegranate molasses 1 tbsp. honey 1 tbsp. minced shallot 1 garlic clove, minced 1/2 cup olive oil 1 1/2 tsp. finely chopped fresh oregano • salt and pepper

Combine all salad ingredients in a large bowl, and sprinkle with 1/2 tsp. of salt. In a small bowl, combine dressing ingredients and whisk until combined, adding salt and pepper, to taste. Pour dressing over salad and toss. Serve immediately. are advertised on the website, but are almost always filled within hours after posting, so I also occasionally teach cooking classes to private groups. My readers and viewers get to learn about my cooking adventures, utensils and appliances. At last count, I have eight grills, two tagines, 22 knives, and ninety-four thousand serving dishes - at least according to my husband. My refrigerators are filled with nuts, cheese, and dried fruits I’ve brought from other countries. And my spice cabinets contain a menagerie of exotic and odiferous seeds, pods, and dried herbs that I use so many ways. Jewelry art is my other favorite activity. I create jewelry from beads and trinkets collected on my travels, including amber from Russia and Estonia, glass from Murano, Italy, paper beads from Rwanda, and old Yemen prayer capsules from Israel. I have an Indian friend who has some

of the most beautiful semi-precious stones that he cuts into beautiful shapes. Several times a year, I attend national bead and jewelry shows where I search for unusual items to complete my creations. Many more adventures are planned for 2019, and I’m excited to share them with you in my monthly column in Values Magazine, including recipes, cooking tips, interviews with my favorite Tulsa area chefs, cookbook recommendations, travel stories, my favorite local food trucks, and ways we can give our time and talents to our fantastic community of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Connect with me on Facebook and Instagram at Beads and Basil. And let’s all have a great 2019!

he statistics are startling. A poll of 7th graders across Tulsa County shows 11% have consumed alcohol in the past 30 days. 9% are already using some form of nicotine, and 6% have experimented with prescription medication belonging to someone else. A full 25% of Tulsa teens admit to binge drinking. Teenagers often see this behavior as harmless fun. However, research shows nine out of ten adults suffering from addiction started using before the age of 18. There is no socioeconomic divide when it comes to substance use. Children and teens from all backgrounds are at risk. When these behaviors lead to addiction, the toll is devastating. Substance abuse and dependence may lead to incarceration, expensive rehabilitation, health issues, other risk-taking behavior, and even death. Benjamin Franklin once said, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” This is especially true with substance use. Evidence has shown youth who receive prevention messages repeatedly are substantially less likely to use drugs and alcohol. In a state with some of the highest rates of substance abuse in the nation, one organization has stepped in to reduce addiction: Operation Aware. “If we don’t do something, nothing will change. No one else is doing this level of comprehensive prevention” states Executive Director, Jeni Dolan. For 39 years, the agency has worked in schools across Green Country to prevent children and teens from engaging in dangerous behaviors. They have developed meaningful relationships with students for

decades. Their method involves using evidence-based curriculum over the course of 8 weeks to reach young people, build relationships, and reduce risk-taking behavior. The curriculum doesn’t just teach what not to do. Instead, the organization teaches how to make healthy choices, handle peer pressure appropriately, and develop friendships. The consistency of the message has been shown to reduce substance use in the schools in which the agency operates.

“These pieces, created collaboratively with students and their mentoring artist, are auctioned off at our Gala to raise funds for local prevention Education.” From Jenks and Bixby to dozens of Tulsa Public and Rogers County schools, thousands of children in Eastern Oklahoma are impacted by the program. A mentorship program is also utilized to help their audience find creative outlets. Director of Development, Tara Saylor states “Based on compelling research that extracurricular involvement and mentoring helps to develop better life skills, improved communication skills, less psychosocial problems, fewer risky behaviors like drug use, increased academic achievement and less delinquency and violence, Operation Aware has, for the last six years, offered Operation A.R.T. (Awareness. Reached. Together.). Operation A.R.T. pairs students with Local Artists to create a one-

of-a-kind original art piece. These pieces, created collaboratively with students and their mentoring artist, are auctioned off at our Gala to raise funds for local prevention Education.” This year, presented by the Anne & Henry Zarrow Foundation, the Havana-themed Gala will be hosted at the Mayo Hotel. Green Country residents have the opportunity to participate in preventing addiction while also empowering A.R.T. students. Hosted by Emcee Mike Collier, the evening will start at 6 pm with a cocktail hour and auction preview. Dinner and dessert will be served in the historic venue with live entertainment and a silent auction. The beautiful, impactful evening will end with a live auction in which the masterpieces will be auctioned off. “This Gala is unique in the sense that you get to support prevention while boosting the selfworth and validating the talents of the students by purchasing their art,” says Jeni. Each piece of art is a oneof-a-kind work developed over a 2-3 month period. The process allows students to experiment with different mediums and utilize creative expression while contributing in a meaningful way to the continued work of the agency. Every auction bid affirms their value. Operation Aware invites you to be a part of this lifechanging work.

COSMOSPHERE CAMP SCHOLARSHIPS BY CARLA STANFIELD

CB Bank is partnering with the Cosmosphere International Science Education Center & Space Museum in Hutchinson, KS, to send ten students in sixth through eighth grade to Cosmosphere Camp this summer. Five students from Kansas and five students from Oklahoma will be awarded a camp scholarship from RCB Bank and will be eligible to choose to attend either Cosmosphere Aerospace Camp 101 or 201. To be eligible for consideration, participants must register and compete in a space agriculture contest, where they will attempt to grow the most food within a onecubic meter garden, mimicking experiments currently taking place on the International Space Station. The contest begins on Feb. 1, 2019, and concludes on April 30, 2019. For a full set of contest rules and frequently asked questions, please visit: cosmo. org/news-and-events. “The opportunity for students to experience true astronaut training at a young age is something they will never forget and may be the career defining moment in their lives,” said Roger Mosier, president and CEO of RCB Bank. “We are pleased to be able to offer such an opportunity for both Kansas and Oklahoma students.” Winners will choose to attend either Cosmosphere Camp 101 or 201, where they will train like real astronauts in Cosmosphere simulators like the 4-G centrifuge, multi-axis trainer and stress simulator. Students will engage with rocket engineering history through artifacts found only at the Cosmosphere and build rockets including a model V2. Finally, contest winners will fly missions in the Falcon lll spacecraft simulator and even train for microgravity environments with a SCUBA experience. The Cosmosphere International SciEd Center & Space Museum is located at 1100 North Plum in Hutchinson, KS. Its collection of U.S.

space artifacts is second only to the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum, and it showcases the largest collection of Russian space artifacts outside of Moscow. This unique collection allows the Cosmosphere to tell the story of the space race better than any museum in the world while offering fully immersive education experiences that meet the Next Generation Science Standards and introduce students to the power of wondering—asking the critical questions that lead to discovery. The Cosmosphere’s Carey Digital Dome Theater offers documentary showings daily and recently-released feature films on weekends. The state of the art digital 4K projection theater coupled with digital surround sound audio provides an immersive environment that wraps the viewer in a theater-going experience they won’t find anywhere else.
