Vault Gallery Showcases Native American Art BY TOM FINK
F
ebruary, 2022: A newly established art gallery along the Mother Road in northeast Oklahoma will be showcasing the works of Native American artisans. Just off Route 66 in Catoosa, the Vault Gallery is the culmination of the aspirations and efforts of a group of dedicated Native American artists and volunteers. The group? The Route 66 Native Arts Alliance. “Route 66 Native Arts Alliance is a grassroots movement that was born out of the idea to create an opportunity to educate, display and promote Native American art and artisans,” said Betsy Swimmer, Route 66 Native Arts Alliance. “When the group was being formed, everyone was excited about the idea of displaying (Native American) art – paintings, pottery, weaving, etc. – but we needed a location in order for us to be able to do this. “Being a realtor, I’m familiar with property in the area and was aware of a space that became available to us in Catoosa, right along Route 66, which is appropriate since it’s also a significant part of our heritage,” she continued. “We acquired the space – which had previously been occupied by Bank of America – and, since a vault was one of the prominent features within the space, we decided to call it the ‘Vault Gallery’ and open it up as a source of cultural tourism.” Although the group had hosted art shows previously, their newest exhibit – entitled “The Spirit of Collaboration” – will coincide with the grand opening of the art gallery in February. “We’re now in the position that this will be our third (art) show, we have the gallery, and we’re developing a cultural Left: Though only 18 years old, Daria’s artistic textile genius for weaving her own knits, creating colors, and clothing patterns with an outstanding sense of style and purpose. From a full-size ruffled skaters dress made from paper to a one piece jump suit emulating a space suit, Daria is an amazing local clothing design talent showcased at “The VAULT Gallery.”

tourism program,” she said. “We’ve already had basket making classes, pottery making classes and more., but the gallery will give us the opportunity to highlight the work of Native American artists all the time.” Swimmer, herself a member of the Cherokee Nation, has been a volunteer at the Tulsa Indian Arts Festival, was founding member of the Indian Territory Arts & Humanities Council in Broken Arrow, and under the auspices of Tulsa Global Alliance, coordinated a Native American art show which went to Germany in 2000. Even so, she still encounters persons without an accurate frame of reference for her culture. “The impact of our people and of our tribal leaders is pretty amazing, and one that we always enjoy telling people about,” she said. “But when people come to the area, they may have heard of the strong Native American influences and the people here. They really don’t know much about us, our contributions or our heritage, so we have the opportunity to share with them about our history through conversation, and at the Vault Gallery, through our art.” Native American artists help make the knowledge presentable through their work, in such a way that people are more attracted to it and upon being
attracted, have the opportunity to learn about its origins. Among the Native American artists to be featured at the “The Spirit of Collaboration” exhibit are Crystal Hanna, Clancy Gray, David Bruntzel, Traci Rabbit, Gwen Lester Coleman, Mary Beth and John Timothy, Daniel Martin Horse Chief, Dianna and Harry Beaver, Rise Thelanker and others. “We especially like the gallery being located on Route 66 because of the historical significance and its association with Andy Payne – I knew him personally when I lived in Oklahoma City,” she said. “There are many tie-ins (with Route 66), and the fact that the Route 66 Centennial will be taking place in 2026 makes this the ideal location for us to share our art and cultural pride with visitors, giving them an authentic experience on Route 66.” Swimmer said the gallery is planning to have four major exhibitions a year and once open, artists will be on-site regularly to meet with the public. “The attraction here is that this is a gallery which was founded by artists to display their work,” she said. “This is an artist-driven gallery that will be organized and run by an artist committee made up of authentic Native American artists, who will be on-site. There will be no question about the
authenticity of what they’re producing. This will be the definitive attraction for travelers wanting to learn more about Native American culture.” “The Spirit of Collaboration” exhibit will coincide with the opening of the Vault Gallery, 6-8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 11, 2022. The Vault Gallery is located at 1801 Highway 66 in Catoosa. Once open, the gallery will be open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. Cost to visit is free, but donations will be accepted, and authentic art will be available to purchase from participating artists.

Annual Wild Onion Feast Honors Cultural Traditions BY TOM FINK
F
ebruary, 2022: Spring is coming As the cold of winter ebbs and the warmth of spring returns to Oklahoma, the sights, sounds, and traditions of the season return along with it. For the members of the Indian Women’s Pocahontas Club that means the annual welcoming of the season with the Wild Onion Feast. Since its inception more than 100 years ago, the Indian Women’s Pocahontas Club have been the caretakers of the customs, rituals and cultural traditions of the Cherokee Nation, and the Wild Onion Feast is among its oldest traditions. For longtime Pocahontas Club member Ollie Starr the tradition is one that goes all the way back to her childhood in Pryor. “The first green of spring, in our native culture, was the wild onion, and it was our tradition – to have a dinner from wild onion to recognize the return of spring,” Starr said. “As my birthday

was March 15, and the wild onions come up in March that was always my birthday feast.” “I used to go with my father in his old Ford truck to forage for wild onions, and we had a special place to go, down by the creek where the leaves would fall (in the autumn), under which, you could just see the wild onions growing,” she said. “You’d rake back the leaves and gather enough of the wild onions – we always used a sharpened stick – and would rinse them off in the cold water. It was my job to lay them straight so they could be easily cut.” After this, Starr said she would gather sassafras root to make the tea, as it was considered the “cleansing tonic” of the spring. While the feast itself historically bolstered members of the tribe as they came out of the cold winter months, it also brought the community together in a time of fellowship, much like it does in modern times.

Today, the feast shares those memories and heritage with all ages, while incorporating a live auction to the proceedings to raise money for the group to share with upcoming generations through their scholarship fund. “In addition to the feast being a celebration of our heritage, the auction is the means by which we fundraise for our yearly scholarships,” she said. “At the auction, we have several items – donated to us by individuals, groups or area businesses, which allows us to award scholarships for deserving Cherokee youth.” The dinner itself includes wild onions, often mixed with scrambled eggs for protein, salt pork, fry bread, grape dumplings and sassafras tea. “We’re going to be spacing the tables out a little more this year, so we would encourage people to buy tickets early and buy a table, so that they can bring their family and share this tradition with them,” Starr said. “Whatever (COVID) protocols are in place at the time will be recognized during the dinner and auction.” The Wild Onion Feast is the club’s biggest fundraiser of the year. “We’re honored to be sharing this with people, allowing them to be a part of it, to learn more about us and our traditions while enjoying our traditional foods with friends or family,” she said. The Indian Women’s Pocahontas Club’s Wild Onion Dinner is scheduled for March 19 at First United Methodist Church, 1615 OK-88 in Claremore. Seating will begin at 11:15 a.m. and lunch will be served at noon. For more information or tickets, contact Celeste Tillery at 918-724-3006 or Ollie Starr at 918-760-7499.

It’s Not Too Late to Join the Claremore Home & Garden Show, March 25 – 26 Exhibitors and vendors sign-up for the big spring show!
F
ebruary, 2022: In horticulture, a perennial is a plant with deep roots that weathers the cold winter months to return in the warmer seasons. Not unlike a perennial, the Claremore Home & Garden Show will be making its reappearance this spring in Claremore. Amateur or professional gardeners, do-it-yourselfers, anyone who takes pride in their lawn, home interior or exterior, or those eager to undertake any project for their house or property can find something of interest at the upcoming annual event, scheduled for Friday, March 25, and Saturday, March 26, in Claremore. “This (show) is an opportunity for folks to come and connect

with vendors from around the region, and some from outside (the region) for their home improvement projects,” said Tanya Andrews, VisitClaremore executive director and Claremore Home & Garden Committee chairperson. “Contractors, service providers, artisans, craftsman and companies will be on hand to showcase their goods and services, whether those involve home repairs or remodels, gardening tips, gardening ideas, gardening equipment, or if you just want to buy some plants, and we have local wineries present, if you just want to buy a bottle of locallyproduced wine, the (Claremore) Home & Garden Show offers all this, and more.” In addition, Rogers County FFA chapters will have booths setup with a variety of plants available. The FFA Chapters grow them all as part of their horticulture lessons and proceeds from the sales go toward more resources for them. As weather can often make or break any public event, the show will be held within the Claremore Expo Center, with no fee for admission. “Although this is generally an event for adults, it’s a great indoor activity for kids as well, as many of the vendors have little giveaway items, little freebies for the

y definition, the tourism industry markets places of interest to the public, and all the places of interest and things to do in Claremore makes Tanya Andrews’s role as executive director of Visit Claremore that much easier. “Visit Claremore serves as the marketing and promotion arm for the city and the surrounding area,” Andrews said. “We share our story with the world-our story of a great community started by local entrepreneurs and small-business owners; home of Oklahoma

strives to reach potential visitors as well residents in the region. “I have been in the hospitality industry for a long time; from hotels and restaurants to my long time career as the Director of Visit Claremore,” said Andrews, a second generation Claremore Zebra and RSU alumni. “I started in 2005 when it was the Claremore Convention & Visitors Bureau and has evolved into Visit Claremore. Now a department of the City of Claremore, we merged with the Claremore Expo Center in 2015. Missions were identical so the two merging made sense and allowed for more resources for both.” As an industry “storyteller,” Visit Claremore tells the history of the community to visitors through social media, advertising, news articles and in-person with the public. “Tourism is the purest form of economic development. It doesn’t require roads, bridges, stop lights, utilities, etc. except when we see growth in hotels, and restaurants or other related businesses,” Andrews said. “With a healthy flow of visitors the increase in usage and need of our hospitality businesses is a healthy growth to the city, via sales taxes, increased utilities and providing more jobs without taxing roads and emergency services.” Inasmuch as tourism benefits
the city, Andrews also commended the town’s many entrepreneurs, and the importance of community support. “To buy locally you are supporting one of our own residents, who have invested thousands, maybe even millions in our community,” she said. “They have already given back by bringing, or opening, their business here; they believe that our community is worth their investment. Additionally, they are providing local jobs. Some business owners and/or property owners might not be from Claremore, however, their employees are. Those employees live here and spend their money on groceries, utilities, and contribute to our tax base.” “To buy from a local business we are investing our money to keep them here-keep them open and employees working-we are supporting their dream and their investments they brought to the table first,” she said. venue,” explained Susan Gebhart, Three Twenty on Main partner. “After we renovated this space, it was able to handle everything from social events to business events. We host business meetings, private parties, dinners, weddings, receptions, memorial service receptions, etc. “I tell people that if it doesn’t involve live animals, fire or water, we’re probably open to the idea of doing it,” she laughed. Gebhart, a veteran meeting planner and event planner, had been working remotely in Claremore for a company in Texas when she had the idea for Three Twenty on Main. “I managed meetings all over the U.S. and internationally, and the company I worked for specialized in educational meetings for physicians and nurses,” she said. “My partners and I looked around and saw this blossoming of event venues all over the country, so we said to ourselves ‘We could do that.’” By the fall of 2016, Gebhart, Tommy Duncan and Brian Courtney found the space in downtown Claremore that would eventually become Three Twenty on Main.

Between Thanksgiving 2016 and March 2017, the building underwent a “radical transformation” before it opened to the public. “We purposely left a lot of the base elements of the building in place – the history of the building was something we appreciated,” she said. Able to accommodate up to 120 people with a total square footage of 4,000 feet, including a bridal dressing room upstairs and kitchen space, Three Twenty on Main can meet the needs for gatherings of all sizes. Gebhart describes the décor as “elegantly neutral,” allowing for minimum redecoration to look festive for any occasion – casual, semi-formal, formal and very formal. “We have a good neutral palette here, allowing people to do whatever they want to do for whatever event they plan to hold here,” she said. Early reservations are always preferable with at least a “90 day notice” typifying how much advance time is needed for most bookings. “People in Claremore have been so good, so welcoming to us,” she said. “When we started this, we knew we were bringing something

unlike anything else in the area – it’s a little bit different, both in terms of size and environment. People have been very, very good to us. ovie star. Radio personality. Newspaper columnist. Oklahoman. Of all the destinations in Claremore, few have more history than that which honors the life of Oklahoma’s most famous son: the Will Rogers Memorial. More than 19,000-square feet in size, the museum houses artifacts, memorabilia, pictures,

manuscripts, and more pertaining to Rogers’ life, with a theater to show Rogers movies and documentaries. “What we do is preserve and share the life and legacy of Will Rogers for future generations,” explained Will Rogers Memorial Executive Director Tad Jones. As a native Rogers Countian, Jones is well-acquainted with the story of Will. “I grew up in Claremore, went to school in Oologah – towns which were both important parts of Will’s early life – I’ve been around the memorial and the Birthplace Ranch (in Oologah) most of my life,” he said. “I was in the Oklahoma legislature for 12 years and became more familiar with the memorial, as it’s a state entity. When (former museum director) Steve (Gragert) retired in 2014, I was contacted to see if I might be interested in taking over for him, to which I said ‘Absolutely.’ I had a marketing background, and thought I could use that and my experience to really expand the memorial’s outreach, both in the community and beyond. I’m thrilled to have this opportunity.” Even though Rogers rose to fame

nearly 100 years ago, so many of his insights and outlooks remain as relevant today as they did during his lifetime. “When people come to the museum, they have a good time, they have fun, and they come to understand Will’s joy for life, how he lived life to the fullest and treated everyone with respect,” he said. “He gave all for his fellow man and his family. He was just a great citizen role model for our community, our state and our nation.” While the museum serves as a destination for travelers from around the world, many of them stopping to see the sights while traveling Route 66, Jones said he’s appreciative of the support that the museum receives from the community. “We try to do a lot of activities for the community – to draw them in and experience Will, to bring people together in the spirit of Will,” he said. “We have Will’s Country Christmas, Will Rogers Days, Easter egg hunts, Family Days, lectures, etc. We are part of this community, sharing thoughts, ideas and friendships with Claremore residents and people within the local and nearby communities.” The museum gift shop contains numerous books, clothing items, cards, kid’s toys, and other mementos about Will Rogers, Route 66, the community and the state – perfect for souvenirs, keepsakes or Christmas gifts. Fashionable, Trendy and Community Champion: District on Main
T
he District on Main in Claremore features a stylish selection of fashionable clothing and accessory brands, handbags and home goods – with a very interesting beginning. This fabulous boutique features over 170 of the most coveted brands including Gorjana, Kendra Scott, Brighton, Dear John, Sanctuary, Tribal, Dylan, Z Supply, Liverpool and Brumate. “First and foremost, The District (on Main) is a women’s clothing, jewelry and gift store” said Cari Bohannan, owner, The District on Main. “We are your one stop shop in Claremore for a woman’s clothing needs for every day or special occasions.” Bohannan’s path to owning a boutique began nearly decade ago, also in downtown Claremore. The business has evolved through the years. “We originally started across the street with a partner, with paint, and painted furniture in a booth at Sailors (Antiques),” she said. “Then, we

changed brands of paint and it required our own storefront, which led us to opening our own shop – and here we are.” Now a fashion-forward boutique, The District on Main offers affordable chic, trendy and popular clothing. Styles are appropriate selections for women of all ages. As well as a distinctive selection of jewelry and accessories, handbags, bath and body items, and gifts for just about everyone on your giving list. “We have an eclectic atmosphere here – in one way, it’s like walking back into history because this is a historic building, and many elements of its past are still here, especially the walls, but it’s also very fun and relaxed, but with a large assortment of brand-name items people won’t find anywhere else but here. I like to describe us as having ‘big city fashion with small town charm.’” “We have several out-of-town customers, many of whom order online, but the community has been a big supporter of us, for which we’re very grateful,” she said. “As the last couple of years
have made some people reluctant to shop in person, we’re fortunate that they’ve stepped up and shopped with us online or ordered and taken advantage of our curbside pickup.” Bohannan said supporting local businesses such as her own isn’t just good for the customer, it’s good for the community, as so many local business owners are community members and partners themselves, who then return the support in other businesses, civic groups, clubs and organizations. “People who support us, who support local businesses are indirectly supporting their community,” she said. “It means so much to us as small-business owners.” Several specials will be offered throughout the Christmas and holiday season. The District on Main is located at 406 W. Will Rogers Boulevard. For more information, call the District on Main at 918-283-4637 or visit them online at http://www. thedistrictonmain.com/

“Originally, I worked in a corporate job in Pryor, but I’d always had an antiques booth during my career because it’s always been a way for me to relax.” Eventually, Reno opened her own shop in Claremore – a place for antique lovers like herself. “How we operate is, we have the space and rent it out to a proprietor, who is responsible for furnishing it, keeping it clean and marketing the items, which are generally vintage in nature,”

she said. “We have 40 proprietors spread out over 7,000 square feet.” Proprietor booth spaces are month-to-month, so unique items offered change from one month to the next, but always with something for collectors or those who just want to be reminded of simpler times. “We get a lot of business from travelers, but also from members of the community and others from around the area,” she said. “Antique shopping is a unique experience. So many people have told us that it’s relaxing, it’s enjoyable, and it evokes memories from their childhood. People will come in just to look around and come across things that remind them of when they were growing up or of their parents. Something we hear quite often is ‘Oh, my grandmother used to have one of those.’” Sailor Antiques itself is something of an antique, as the building itself was built in 1902 and is on the National Register of Historic Places. “We’re blessed that we’re in this beautiful historic building and we’re also in a corridor of some main thoroughfares – Route 66, the Will Rogers Turnpike, Highway 20, etc.,” she said. Among some of the more collectible items to be found at Sailor are Fenton glassware and Frankoma Pottery of Sapulpa, but highly collectible or not, Reno said all items carry fond memories for someone and her store – and Claremore – are perfect destinations. “I believe that Claremore is a destination, a great community – just the three blocks that are historic downtown Claremore is a great area,” she said. “We’re all

This is where the local market landed in 2021! Although inventory seems to be on the rise as people plan the pre-covid spring market, it’s predicted interest rates are on the rise as well! Describing the sixth win (out of seven So favored is the Claremore-based nominations) as “unprecedented,” Petty rodeo that its recognition extends well nonetheless said, knowing all the people beyond Oklahoma, and at the recent awards banquet held in Las Vegas, Nevada, and the work that goes into making the event a success, he’s not surprised. the rodeo was selected as the 2021 Small “For one thing, we’re equal money in all Rodeo of the Year by both the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) and of our events, straight across the board – the Women’s Rodeo Association (WRPA). that helps with the contestants,” he said. “They (the contestants) always appreciate Although this was the first time for that – that we’re not singling out certain the rodeo to receive WRPA honors, this events – adding more money – than selection marks the sixth time that the others, which I think everyone always Will Rogers Stampede has been named appreciates. Small Rodeo of the Year by the PRCA, “We do feature our steer roping event – edging out other rodeo city finalists from Claremore is traditionally a steer-roping across the country, including Coulee City, rodeo – and the event itself is something Washington, Aberdeen, South Dakota, that everyone involved takes pride Abbyville, Kansas and Yuma, Colorado in,” he said. “Contestant hospitality and “This is our sixth win – six out of seven community support is second-to-none, nominations, and it’s quite an honor to there have been several improvements be recognized as a top-five rodeo by two to have taken place at the new Stamped fine organizations – the Professional Park, and we’ve been fortunate to have Rodeo Cowboys Association and the Women’s Rodeo Association – in the same sponsors to support (the rodeo) for the past 75 years. We had a lot of great acts for our 75th year, and the community kicked the rodeo off with a new golf tournament called ‘Cowboys For Kids’, which was a partnership with Rogers County Youth Services, we were a part of Food Truck Thursday, and we had several events that happened at the rodeo, including some post-rodeo concerts performed by local artisans – it was very much an event that connected with the community.” Drawing 745 contestants and an estimated 15,000 spectators, the 2021 rodeo was held May 27-30, at Stampede Park, and the rodeo is traditionally held over Memorial weekend. Started in 1946, the Will Rogers Stampede PRCA Rodeo joined the PRCA in 1947. The rodeo is a partnership of the City of Claremore, the Board of County Commissioners for Rogers County and the Will Rogers Round Up Club.
