Quality Family Entertainment Metal: The Roof for Hard Earned Dollars of a Lifetime 69th year for Will Rogers Stampede Rodeo.

By Jim Butcher

Legendary Mexican rope artist Tomas Garcilazo will be performing at the 69th annual Will Rogers Stampede Rodeo in Claremore May 22-24.

It wasn’t too long ago when ever boy in America wanted to grow up and be a cowboy. And while there aren’t too many cowboy and western movies being produced, that dream still exists in some and one of the ways ‘we get an inside look at some aspects of that way of life” is the rodeo. Rodeos were based on the skills required by working cowboys, in what today is the western United States, western Canada, and northern Mexico. Today it is a sporting event that involves horses and other livestock, designed to test the skill and speed of the cowboys and cowgirls. American style professional rodeos generally comprise the following events: tie-down roping, team roping, steer wrestling, saddle bronc riding, bareback bronc riding, bull riding and barrel racing. The events are divided into two basic categories: the rough stock events and the timed events. Depending on sanctioning organization and region, other events such as breakaway roping, goat tying, or pole bending may also be a part of some rodeos. In Oklahoma rodeos have been and continue to be a most important part of life and the forthcoming

Community Builders, Inc. recommends energyefficient metal roofs for a lifetime of beauty, without the maintenance. By Duane Blankenship Greg Wolter founded Community Builders, Inc. and has served as its president for more than 30 years. The company offers home remodeling services to clients throughout Oklahoma, Kansas, Arkansas and Missouri. They are not general contractors, but rather specialize in the work they know best, and they do it well. This includes energy-efficient vinyl siding, replacement windows, gutter guard systems, high quality sunrooms, bath and Jacuzzi products, and metal roof systems. “We’ve always impressed customers with our professionalism, price competitiveness and customer dedication,” says Greg. “We’re grateful that customers continue to put their confidence in us by giving us the opportunity to provide outstanding products and services in

every remodeling project we do. We enjoy earning your respect and your business.” Now is a great time to think about roofs, and Community Builders recommends metal and stone-coated metal roofs by EnergyLoc. “A common shingle roof has a life expectancy of about seven years,” says Greg, “and even top-ofthe-line shingles generally last only about 11 years.” Community Builders offers metal and stone-coated metal shingles that carry 50-year labor and materials warranties. “While it’s true that our Energy-Loc roofing products cost more than composite shingles, one needs to compare the life expectancies of the products before making a final decision,” says Greg.

The Million Dollar Question: Do You Have Enough Money To Retire? rental income, and pensions. If the amount you anticipate from these sources is equal to or more than what your expenses are then you are in shape. If not, the remainder will come from what you save in your 401k’s, IRA’s, Roth’s, etc.. Now multiply the number of your yearly gap by 25. That should give you the amount of savings you need so that you can draw the recommended 4% annually from your investments.

BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT

It’s not a one size fits all answer. Do you really need $1 million to retire? Or is it $2 million for a retired couple? Or is it 10 times your current annual salary? All of these are nice, neat figures you might have heard. The bottom line is it boils down to what your expenses are and what your retirement income sources will be. The keys are to retire with as little debt as possible by paying off your mortgage, vehicle loans, and other debt such as boats and credit cards and to save as much as possible by contributing to retirement plans, savings, and other sources of income. To get started, figure out approximately how much you currently spend on an annual basis. Don’t forget food, credit card bills, insurance, and vacations. Check your numbers against your current “bring home” pay. If your expense numbers are significantly higher than your budget and you don’t save anything every month, you may have underestimated your actual expenses. It is very common for people to underestimate expenses and overestimate their investment returns. Surprisingly, when folks come in to my office and bring me a list of their expenses, the most common budget item left off is food. Since we would like for you to continue to eat during retirement, please don’t forget to budget for food. Next, subtract the expenses you don’t plan to have

www.ValueNews.com

during retirement (mortgage payment, expenses for kids at home, college expenses, etc.). Finally, add back in money for health care. If you retire before age 65, when Medicare will kick in, and your company doesn’t continue paying for health insurance, you will need to do a little research to figure out how much that will cost . Remember that for most folks, health care costs go up as you age. We typically estimate that the average retiree spends about 75-85% of their pre-retirement income in retirement to sustain their lifestyle. However, that is just a rule of thumb. You may not be average. Do your research and then do the math to figure out how much retirement savings you will need. Here’s how to figure it. Add up all the income you anticipate receiving from retirement sources. This should include social security,

For example, let’s say your expenses are $4000 per month to keep yourself fed, clothed, housed, and living the retirement lifestyle that you want. You have $1500 from Social Security and $1000 from a pension for a total of $2500 per month. That results in a shortfall of $1500 per month, or $18,000 per year. $18,000 x 25 = $450,000. That’s the amount you will need in your savings for retirement (401k, IRAs, Roth’s, etc.) to close the gap. Now, these are estimates. You’re probably not “normal” or average. Do some figuring and research. If you need our help, give us a call. We can help. For more information go to www.Waterstonewealth.com. Back to His Roots with Will

Beau Jennings and Tigers will headline “Will on the Hill,” Saturday, May 16th.

By, Pat Reeder Beau Jennings has a history in Rogers County, but spread his wings to New York, where he was all set to make a new album about his Brooklyn experiences. His plans took a new turn, back to his Oklahoma roots and to a childhood hero — Will Rogers — and the Verdigris River, between his hometown in Inola and Will Rogers birthplace near Oologah. On Saturday, May 16, Beau Jennings and the Tigers will headline “Will on the Hill”, set on the rolling hills of the Will Rogers Memorial Museum. Other bands and performers are being lined up for the Festival from 2-10 p.m., said Bart Taylor, Will Rogers Memorial Museum assistant curator for education. Jennings, who appeared in concert at the Museum two years ago, will play his new album/project, “The Verdigris: in Search of Will Rogers.” To prepare for the project, Jennings retraced the steps in Will’s life, traveling from his Indian Territory birthplace to Alaska, where he and Wiley Post perished in a plane crash. As he traveled to major locations in Will’s life, he recorded new songs written on the way, inspired by nature and places.

Beau Jennings and Tigers

Activities will begin with a live podcast from noon to 1 p.m. with Taylor and Jacob Krumwiede, Museum assistant director, in an interview with Jennings about the process of writing his Will Rogers’ influenced album. “He will play a song or two on his acoustic guitar to show and talk about his songs,” Taylor said. Cody Brewer, associated with the Woody Guthrie Center in Tulsa, will be putting on a Will Rogers’ themed songwriting class for kids from 1-2 p.m. in the Theatre. He will involve youngsters in songwriting and more specifically, writing about Will Rogers. He does this program at the Woody Guthrie Center with kid’s excitement building as their creativity is aroused using Oklahoma history to tell a story. Bands: Annie Oakley, an all-girl band founded by singer-songwriters Sophia and Grace Babb, is added to the list of musicians. Their music is described as Americana with a combination of folk, bluegrass, country, indie and soul. The sisters are descendants of both Comanche and pioneer Land Run stock and share the Ulster Scots heritage of Woody Guthrie and Merle Haggard. About Grazzhopper has a foundation of bluegrass and country. Frontman Cody Brewer draws

from influences of his family and surroundings. Grazzhopper’s songs discuss everything from trials and tribulations of life to the power of joy. Other bands and singers expected are Travis Linville, Dana Louise and Joe Mack. Linville has appeared on the David Letterman show and played multi-instrumentals with Hayes Carll on stages across North America, the United Kingdom, Australia, Denmark and Norway. Joe Mack is a singer, songwriter, producer, and teacher with a 30-year history of performing in a variety of situations. At the same time the grounds will be teeming with the Tulsa Windriders, a kite experience, artists and food trucks. Sponsors are Cherokee Nation, Cherokee Nation Businesses, Oklahoma Arts Council and Will Rogers Memorial Foundation. For more information, contact

Pain-Free Living Is a Possibility

By Sheryl Sowell For anyone who has experienced a pulled muscle or a pinched nerve, you know how painful it can be. Small tasks suddenly seem monumental, and just getting through each day becomes a struggle. For thousands of Oklahomans, this life is a reality. Many don’t even go to see a doctor for fear of surgery or a lengthy and expensive treatment program. But, you don’t have to live your life in constant pain. Recent spinal decompression patient Dennis Barnes says, “Don’t suffer in pain needlessly!” The staff at Spinal Decompression of Oklahoma may be able to help you live pain free, but you will never know until you give them a call. For patient Dennis Barnes, life had gotten increasingly difficult. He suspected that his pain was from a back injury he experienced in the 70s. The injury was severe enough to require surgery, but with surgery and physical therapy, Dennis was feeling pretty good. He just took care when lifting heavy items and along with a walking program, kept himself in good health. He thought his days of back pain were over.

Unfortunately, in April of 2010, the pain returned with a vengeance. Dennis was experiencing severe pain daily and thought that another back surgery was in his future – a thought that he was not looking forward to. Then, while reading a news article about another individual with severe back pain who had found relief, Dennis decided that it was worth giving the doctor a call. Dr. Gary Fortner, with Spinal Decompression of Oklahoma, did X-rays and an MRI of Dennis’s back and found four discs that had areas of concern. “I was hurting so badly at this point I couldn’t sit still, couldn’t stand, couldn’t sleep – my entire life revolved around this pain I was experiencing,” explains Dennis. “I knew I didn’t want to go through surgery again, so I decided to give this a try. After meeting Dr. Fortner, I really felt like I could believe in him and trust him, so when he said he could help me, I decided to give it a try.” Spinal decompression is the perfect alternative to surgery for a great number of people. And the treatment is quick and easy.

Dennis says that he actually looked forward to his appointments. In his case, he started out with 5 minutes of ultrasound for relaxing the deep muscle tissue and then lying down on hot moist towels for approximately 15 minutes. That was one of his favorite parts. Next, a special belt and vest are placed on the patient, the patient boards the Spina machine standing and then the machine tilts you to where you are lying down. The vest is used to keep the upper body stationary as the belt will allow a gentle and precise pull at the exact tension and angle as their doctor prescribes. This treatment allows injured discs to get fluid and circulation to the damaged areas. Finally, ice packs and e-stim are placed on the injured area to ease discomfort. “I don’t completely understand the procedure, but I do know that it worked,” he says. After eight visits, Dennis began to feel a tremendous difference. Within two months, Dennis was completely pain free, without the expense and trauma of surgery. “My quality of life is wonderful again, and I feel like I can live my life the way I want

I just want everyone out there that is experiencing back pain to give Spinal Decompression of Oklahoma a try. Sometimes surgery is necessary, but if you can get the pain relief you want without going under the knife, isn’t that much better?” In Dennis’s case, his insurance covered most of the expense for treatments, but a quick phone call to (918) 3411250, and they can tell you exactly what is covered and what to expect. No surprises! Spinal Decompression of Oklahoma is located at 1408 N. Florence Ave in Claremore. As for Dennis, he has never

regretted his decision to give this alternative treatment a try. “I am still careful when I lift heavy items, but I can do pretty much anything I want pain free. That is the best part,” says Dennis. “And I have been able to resume my daily walks! Life is great again and most important, I get to live it without pain.”

Children and Elderly Prime Target for Fractures Dr. Brad Lawson is on call to provide treatment.

By Jim Butcher Ouch! The average adult will sustain two fractures over a lifetime, according to a survey by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. About 6.3 million fractures occur each year, with 40 percent at home, inside or outside. The survey notes after age 45,

broken bones are higher among women – three times higher than men. Before age 75, the most common fracture is a broken wrist, followed by broken hips for those after 75. Broken bones generate 3.5 million annual visits to the emer-

gency room, with 887,679 hospitalizations. Fifty-seven percent of these fractures belong to people 65 plus, with 90 percent broken hips and 65 percent pelvic. Another question also concerns children: do children’s bones break more often than adults?

Dr. Brad Lawson casts a young patient’s arm.

Brad Lawson, M.D., of Central States Orthopedics, explains, “No, they are more pliable when you are younger and get more brittle as you age. Children often engage in riskier behavior (climbing, jumping from unsafe heights, etc.) resulting in falls and similar accidents. This causes more frequent fractures. And when they get into middle and senior high schools, they play sports.” He continues, “Orthopedic surgeons do more than just practice on the elderly and athletes. People need orthopedic doctors for a wide variety of ailments. We treat bones, joints, nerves, tendons, and even the skin.” Dr. Lawson provides hand, foot and ankle care; total joint care; general orthopedics and sports medicine care. He offers non-surgical treatment options such as prescribed medications, physical therapy, injections, splinting, casting and bracing. He can also provide surgical treatment options, such as carpal tunnel surgery, fracture fixation, arthroscopic surgery, ligament repair and reconstruction, and joint replacement surgeries. The majority of patients he sees on a weekly basis are people who have fractures of the arm, leg, foot, ankle, wrist, elbow, hand, forearm and shoulder. Previously injured? You may want to get his evaluation on a previous injury for which you never received proper treatment. There are many individuals who have had a minor injury, such as twisting an ankle or slipping, not realizing that they have actually

LLive a Healthy Life TOPS (Taking Off Pounds Sensibly) offers the lifetime goal of taking and keeping the weight off without gimmicks or gadgets.

By Carol Beck-Round Weight loss products and the hype surrounding them bring in billions of dollars annually to companies that appeal to those who need to lose pounds. But while some work to initially help

lose weight, most don’t – and the results rarely last. TOPS (Taking Off Pounds Sensibly) is a not-for-profit international organization that supports a healthy diet and lifestyle – for life.

“There are no gimmicks, no gadgets, and we don’t sell food or hold dinners,” says Chapter Secretary Ruth Hodges. “We promote determination, portion control, exercise and healthy food choices.”

TOPS Chapter #493 members include (L to R): Ruth Hodges, secretary; Ardith Louwerens, group leader; and Juanita Hurst, treasurer.

According to recent findings, from what is believed to be the largest study of a weight-loss program in the United States, TOPS is associated with clinically significant weight loss among participants who remained in the program for at least one year. In a study published in “Obesity,” the official journal of The Obesity Society, TOPS participants who renewed their annual membership consecutively over a period of one to three years lost between 5.9 percent and 7.1 percent of their initial weight. The group advocates a lifestyle change and provides the lifetime support a member needs to take it off and keep it off. “We are an educational group for a healthy lifestyle,” Ruth says, “and part of that is being at an appropriate weight.” According to Ardith Louwerens, group leader, “Each individual works with his or her doctor to determine their goal weight.” To help with food choices, the group goes by a food exchange list from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. It promotes choices in the following groups: fruits and vegetables, fatfree and low-fat milk, lean protein, and healthy starches and fats. “We also use a tool called MyPlate,” says Ruth. “In addition, we offer weight-loss challenges and contests to motivate each individual.” Once you reach your goal weight, you’re still a part of the group, according to Juanita Hurst, group treasurer. “You still need encouragement and support as a KOPS member (Keeping Off

Page 13

Pounds Sensibly),” she adds. The group also advocates an overall fitness plan, which includes strengthening and range of motion exercises as well as walking to benefit the cardiovascular system. As part of a chapter growth challenge for 2015, the Claremore TOPS Chapter #493 is encouraging people who need and want to lose weight to join – not as a quick fix, but as a lifetime commitment to good health. “There is a high percentage of obesity in our state,” says Ardith. “We’d like to encourage people to visit once for free.” National TOPS yearly dues are $32, with the chapter dues set at $5. The group meets every Wednesday, with weigh-in from 8 to 8:45 a.m. followed by a meeting from 9 to 10 a.m. at the Rogers County Extension Building. Part of the dues goes toward a bi-monthly magazine subscription (“TOPS News”) as well as access to educational tools and shopping on their website, www.tops.org. It’s the beginning of a lifelong healthy lifestyle without any hype or gimmicks.

Carl’s Coney Island continues to serve up good food and “a side of faith” to customers

By Carol Beck-Round

Carl’s Coney Island, founded in 1974 by Bill and Yvonne “Jean” Schloss, is still a Claremore landmark and the goto place for a good coney. Current owner, Beth Truitt—the Schloss’ daughter—pictured in the center, purchased the family business with her husband, Ed, in 1998. With Beth are employees, Crystal Cleek, left, and Grace Wallace, right. The restaurant is located in Ne-Mar Center.

For over 40 years, Carl’s Coney Island has been a Claremore landmark. On the current menu you’ll see an offer of a Baker’s Dozen—buy 12, get one free. To the regulars who enjoy lunch at Carl’s Coney Island, located in Claremore’s Ne-Mar Center, that means buy 12 coneys and get the thirteenth one free. But you don’t have to buy a dozen to savor the taste of one of Carl’s coneys. The business served up its first coney when the doors opened for business on June 21, 1974. Under the ownership of Bill and Yvonne “Jean” Schloss, and with the help of their daughter, Judi Schloss, the business of delivering a tasty coney with a choice of different fixin’s began to lure regular customers. In 1998, another daughter, Beth, and her husband, Ed Truitt, took over the family business. “I remember when dad first bought the business,” says Beth. “It took a while for it to take off—for our customers to find us—and they did slowly.” But, as word-of-mouth spread about the restaurant, they began to see a steady stream of regulars. “When Ed and I bought the

restaurant from my dad, he was having some health issues,” she adds. “He told me then, as he always did, that what we do—our business—is done for the Lord. He wanted me to continue to do that, which I have. Our faith is a big part of not just how we live our lives, but it’s a big part of Carl’s Coney Island.” Beth’s sister, Judi Schloss, agrees. “My dad always took care of people who were down and out,” she says. “He was a minister at the jail for 14 years, and many of those men he ministered to, he maintained relationships with and continued to bless for years.” Beth admits that when she and Ed took over the business, it wasn’t easy filling her father’s shoes. “When Ed and I took over the business, and tried to do everything he did—run the business and take care of people—well, I just have to say that God’s been very good to us in that way.” Many changes have occurred through the years at Carl’s, including becoming a lunch-only eatery. Bill Schloss had risen at 3:30 each day to provide breakfast for the crowd beginning at 4 a.m. When Beth, who had just married Ed,

decided to take over the business, the couple agreed they couldn’t continue to serve the morning meal. “I had my own job at the time,” she explains. Ed will tell you it’s “Beth’s management skills and personality,” that have contributed to an increasing lunch crowd while Beth gives Ed credit for his behind-thescenes efforts. According to Ed, there have been many changes since the business opened. “And, we’re one of the few businesses still operating in Ne-Mar that were open in 1974.” This longevity means they’re seeing third-generation customers. “That’s really my thrill—seeing families coming in together, coming in year after year, decade after decade,” she adds.

Camp Courage Does Good, Clean Outdoor Fun Like No One Else

A summer camp experience that keeps kids on target. By Christopher Davis Every summer, parents face the same dilemma: What to do with the kids over summer break? It’s enough challenge moderating time spent on video games and preparing healthy snacks. Finding a summer camp that gets kids outdoors and instills values – that’s enough stress to overwhelm any parent. Camp Courage in Owasso has the answer to parents’ prayers and registration is now open. “We provide a way to discover something new,” says Jennifer Hayes, Camp Courage Director. She and her husband, Ronnie, started the nonprofit Christian camp seven years ago. With three sons of their own, Ronnie and Jennifer have been mentoring kids for over two decades. Spend a few minutes with them, and it becomes obvious they have big hearts and seemingly endless patience. Their passion and faith leads Camp Courage through a summer filled with fun and character building activities for children ages 5 to 13. “Something unique and powerful happens when kids turn off the TV, pluck out the earphones, set down the game controller to spend some time in the great

outdoors,” observes Ronnie. Camp activities include hiking, canoeing, archery and rock climbing. Every year, Camp Courage adds something new to the program. Kids return each year looking forward to their favorites and excited to participate in the latest addition. “Everyone has strengths and weaknesses,” Jennifer says. “But, sometimes, the one thing we are afraid of is what we are good at.” Hayes has seen what all parents have witnessed in their children. It’s natural for a kid to be hesitant about trying out a new sport or skill. Fear of failure – or teasing from peers – is understandable. But Camp Courage emphasizes positivity and teambuilding; and character traits like integrity, respect, honesty, compassion, service, and responsibility are themes within camp culture. With a little encouragement and guidance, kids step up and surprise themselves. Such experiences lay the foundation for personal growth and developing the strength needed to become successful adults. At Camp Courage, the volunteer to camper ratio is 1 to

Archery is one of the many great activities at Camp Courage USA. 8. Parents who can recall their days at summer camp, or have seen some after school programs firsthand, recognize that such an excellent ratio ensures close supervision and ample support for physical activities. Each week, Camp Courage schedules different activities and field trips. For families who have already made travel plans, this means easy scheduling around vacation. For kids 8 to 13 who are looking for a more traditional camp experience, Camp Courage does a week-long camping trip at

Camp Christian near Chouteau. The kids participate in swimming, sports, singing and more. The campground is safe and secure – and not too far away from home. At the Adventure Day Camp in Owasso, children are dropped off at “Base Camp” between 8:30 and 9:00 a.m., and spend the day having fun. Parents may pick them up between 5:00 and 5:30 p.m. Before and after care is available, as well. Sessions run throughout June and July, and into mid-August. Registration is now open for day camp and traditional camp. For information, rates, registration

and more, visit their website at www.CampCourageUSA.com. A summer of memories is a click away.

Quality Family Entertainment for Hard Earned Dollars Will Rogers Stampede Rodeo in Claremore is one of the biggest and best, having been named the 2014 PRCA Rodeo of the Year. The 69th edition is scheduled for Memorial Weekend – May 22 - 24 – with something for the entire family, says Dave Petty, chairman of this year’s event, and who grew up in Ponca City and Osage County with the cowboy way of life in his blood. He readily admits riding a horse, learning to rope at a very early age, and competing in riding bulls and roping was a great way to grow up and appreciate this way of life. Very few today can claim that they were taught how to rope by a legend. At a very early age David learned from Mike Sokoll, a veteran 101 Ranch Rodeo performer, who lived in Ponca City and was 88 years old, at the time, Sokoll was with the original 101 Ranch Wild West Show from 1909-1915. David is a safety specialist for an Oklahoma natural gas gathering and processing company, and he owns a cow-calf operation north of Chelsea and raises quarters horses. He admits he “married into” the Will Rogers Stampede Association, as his wife’s grandparents were charter members of the original Round Up Club. His commitment to preserving the heritage of this nearly 69-yearold event goes well behind that of a typical inlaw. “This is the largest running event in Rogers County next to Will Rogers Days,” he points out. “And I want to help keep that tradition going.” Petty believes that the rodeo offers high quality, family entertainment at a fair price. “You work hard for your money and you need to get your dollar’s worth.” He notes that “where else can you get a night of great family entertainment, fun for

the whole family... two adults and two children for only $35? You can’t beat it. And we offer several good package deals. Best to check our website – willrogersstampede.com – and get an overview of the event. We also have a Facebook page.” Celebrating God and country is another important aspect of this rodeo, Petty said. “On Sunday we provide Cowboy Church Services and those who attend can get into the rodeo on Sunday at no charge.” One of the key acts is Tomas Garcilazo is a native of Mexico, where he began learning “Floreo de Reata” (rope artistry) at a very early age, as he was being raised in his family tradition and heritage of La Charreria. This richly developed skill is performed by Charros, who take extreme pride in their horsemanship and roping abilities. “I’m sure the whole family will enjoy watching Tomas’ artistry... I do very much,” Petty said. Having been a part of this particular event for many years, “I know that it requires at lot of hard work by a lot of volunteers. And I know you will enjoy if you attend. Let’s make this our greatest year ever.”

Before You Step onto the Dealership Floor, Prepare continued from page 1

your next car, get preapproved for a loan so you know what is within your budget. Car shopping is less complicated when you know your maximum purchase price. It’s easy to get blinded by a shiny new car and all the extras only to find it’s out of your budget. When you have your financing approved, you can focus on other aspects of purchasing a car like the dealership and car reviews to ensure the best deal. Do your homework. There are a number of websites to research the dependability and safety of cars. Find out what similar cars are selling for in your area. Then, compare your potential purchase to its value on websites such as NADA.com. Trade in your car. If you will be trading in your car, know the payoff amount and ensure the new car dealer will pay off your loan in full. Research the value of your tradein to know what you should expect before going into the dealership. Think through term limits. An important, and often overlooked factor in auto financing, is the loan term. The loan term is the number of months your new car will be financed. Many dealerships will finance a car for seven or even eight years. This may look good on paper but you must think long term. Before you sign, ask yourself, “will I own this car for seven or eight years?” and “will the car’s value still match my loan payoff?” People forget to ask these questions before they purchase and some end up upside down in their car. This means their loan payoff is more than the car is worth and they

have negative equity. While financing a longer term may allow you to buy a more expensive car at a lower monthly payment, you will also pay more interest on long-term loans. Always compare the potential outcome and consider what is best for your future car buying experiences. You are the customer. You decide where to finance your car, not the dealership. While dealerships may have a competitive rate or loan term, ask yourself some questions. Does the dealership have my best interest in mind? If I have problems with my loan, who will I call for help? Does a large out of state bank know me better than my local community bank? You hold the cards when it comes to where you finance your vehicle, so do what feels comfortable to you. Metal: The Roof of a Lifetime continued from page 1 “Most homeowners’ insurance companies discount premiums on their policies up to 35 percent for stone-coated or metal roofs.” Check this out with your insurance company. The number one home insurance claim in Oklahoma is for roof damage and replacement. Here are some facts to keep in mind if you’re considering a new roof for your home. The patented Energy-Loc interlocking fastening system prevents panels from lifting and allowing blowing embers to ignite the roof deck. Their Class “A” Fire Rating is the highest in the industry. They come with a 120-mile-per-hour wind warranty and have withstood 170-mile-perhour wind tests. Energy-Loc’s hail warranty has the highest rating in the industry, and their superior features reduce the threat of roof collapse in an earthquake. The Energy-Loc roof panels will not split, crack, break, curl, warp or absorb water, plus the stone granules in the stone-covered products are UV-reflective and provide protection against the elements. According to the manufacturer, metal roofs are lightweight, contain over 30 percent recycled content, generally increase the value of your home, and are virtually maintenance-free. comes with the installation of a free Green Energy Barrier that features advanced space-age technology. “Customers usually recognize a savings somewhere between 20 to 40 percent on cooling bills and a little less on heating,” says Greg. “Plus, we offer 12 months ‘same-as-cash’ or easy low payment plans to suit your budget.” When asked how long he thought a metal roof would last, Greg responded, “I don’t really know. We’ve only been installing them for a little over 30 years.”

Celebrating the Renaissance Spirit

Jousting is always an exciting activity to watch at the Oklahoma Renaissance Festival.

Costumed performers and artisans present Renaissance music, magic, comedy, juggling, jousting, tomfoolery, arts, food, drink and more at the 20th annual Oklahoma Renaissance Festival in May. By Sheryl Sowell The Renaissance was a rebirth of the human spirit, igniting a passion for beauty expressed through poetry, art, music, intellect and romance. This pivotal time cultivated a desire for a noble life, for a freer opportunity for expression, and for the melding of intellectual curiosity, diverse culture and exotic commerce. Experience a rich cultural tapestry, and the beauty and grandeur of Renaissance England, right here in Oklahoma. You’ll be transported back to the 16th century as Castleton Village comes alive with over 600 costumed stage and street performers, merchants, and artisans providing an entertainment experience fit for royalty. Enjoy special daytime events like the Queen’s Tea, the Royal Luncheon, and the King’s Smoker. And be sure to get tickets for the after-hours entertainment at the Masqued Ball, the Pirate’s Feaste, and the Ceilidh. The Castle is excited to welcome new performers for 2015. Chris Ivanovich will be performing up-close magic at the Crown Inn. The Maguire Brothers will be providing vocals on the Chessboard Stage, and attendees are certain to enjoy the Celtic rock of Cleghorn

the third weekend of festival. The Late Mountebank & Wonder Elixir of Life Company can be found in the Cave. You will find all your other favorite acts appearing on 15 stages on the Castle grounds. You’ll find a dazzling array of artisan creations at 134 different Renaissance merchant shops, and Oklahoma Renaissance Festival is proud to include new merchants in the Village this year. GraysLand Acres features goat milk products. Find amazing embroidery at a Tailor of Two Cities, and be dazzled by new jewelry creations at Handmade by Waite. Rabbit Hero Creations crafts the unique and unusual. Visit the new Masque Shoppe adjacent to the Italian Quarter, and once in the Italian Quarter, be sure to check out Absalom’s Dreams, a new Hookah Bar and Silk Road experience. Find expanded seating in the Tournament Arena this year, where the Heroic Knights of Old clash with sword and lance in full contact jousting. Also watch Knight Wings Birds of Prey present thrilling conservation education with raptors. Then, move to the new seating area for the Living Chess Match and cheer on your favorites. Stroll down twisting, tree-

covered village lanes filled with quaint shops displaying one-of-akind, handcrafted goods. Don the latest Renaissance fashions found in the marketplace, and stop at one of the inns for a flagon of ale. Follow the aroma of fire-roasted food, let the kids play some of the games, or watch the performers while you enjoy a huge smoked turkey leg. Entertainment for all ages will be found at the 2015 Oklahoma Renaissance Festival! Dates and hours for the festival are weekends, May 2-31, plus Memorial Day, Monday, May 25, from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day. Student Day is May 8 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Like The Castle of Muskogee on Facebook.
