TIPS TO HELP YOU START THINKING LIKE A SAVER

GET FINANCIALLY FIT IN 2017 By Jocelyn Wood

This is the year you’re going to take charge of your money. No more rationalizing overspending. No more excuses why you can’t put money into savings. No more regrets. Everyone can save more money. The question you have to ask yourself is what kind of life do you want? Do you want to be debt free? Do you want those new black leather boots? Do you want to retire comfortably? Do you want the newly released smartphone? Do you want to stop living paycheck to paycheck? Do you want your daily large caffé latte from your favorite coffee shop? Saving money is a personal choice only you can make, and the commitment takes effort. It requires discipline and self-control, but the

end result – more money in your savings, a larger down payment on a home or being debt free – is worth your diligence. Here are three practical tips to help you change your attitude about

MATCH YOUR SPENDING

If you struggle with sticking to a budget or tracking your expenses, try this: save an amount equal to whatever you spend on nonessential

indulgences. If you want your morning java, put $4 in a jar. If you plan to eat lunch out, put $8 in jar. You will literally see your spending

REMEMBER YOU WORK HARD

Before you spend your hard-earned money, take the cost of the item you want and divide it by your hourly wage. If you want a $90 pair of boots and you make $10 an hour, are those boots worth the nine

hours of work? Also, pay yourself first. That means put money aside from every paycheck into a savings or retirement account. Saving even $25 a month adds up. Set up

DO NOT BUY ON IMPULSE

Never purchase expensive items on impulse. Think over each purchase for at least 24 hours. During that period, do steps one and two. This will help you consider how necessary the item is that you want to buy. It will also help you have fewer regrets about purchases and more money for savings.

You don’t have to do it alone. Find someone who will help you stay on track of your savings goal. Check out AmericaSaves. org, a site dedicated to helping individuals save money, reduce debt and build wealth. You can take the savings pledge and set up text alerts to receive encouraging

automatic savings through a direct deposit or money transfer. You may surprise yourself how fast your savings grows when you put it on auto-pilot. Ask your bank for more information.

The event is slated for February 18th, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Moore Farms Rustic Weddings & Event Barns. “The 2017 “Chair-ity” Auction promises to be even more fun than last year’s near sell-out event,” said Volunteers for Youth’s Executive Director, Chris Butler. “If you attended and had fun last year, you will want to put the February 18th date on your calendar. If you missed it, definitely make plans to attend this one!” he added. The Mardi-Gras themed event will feature a live auction of creatively re-purposed and re-designed furnishings. Donations of “chair” entries along with any type of creatively re-purposed and redesigned small furnishing are being accepted by contacting the Volunteers for Youth office. The silent auction will offer men and women alike something for every budget. Cajun cuisine, jazz music, a cash bar and a mysterious new game of chance will round out the evening. Tickets are on sale now for the event and may be purchased at the Volunteers for Youth office inside Claremore’s Grand Bank, the Claremore Chamber of Commerce, the Claremore Community Center, and Waterfront Frame & Art in downtown Claremore. The mission of Volunteers for Youth is to positively impact the lives of Rogers County youth. This is accomplished through various mentoring programs. Pink

IN THE By Seana Warren

It’s that time again when cupid comes calling – Valentine’s Day. Do you know where you are going to take your special someone? Now you can take them to The Pink House for lunch or dinner. The Pink House will be opening for dinner starting in February 2017 from 5:00 p.m. through 8:00 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday of each week featuring new items like steak, chicken fried chicken, meatloaf and more hearty fare in larger, dinner-sized portions. So, whether you are celebrating Valentine’s Day with your significant other, or celebrating solidarity with your single friends for Gal-entine’s Day, there’s a place for lovers of all kinds at The Pink House…lovers of tea, lovers of quiches and casseroles, lovers of butterscotch and baked fudge, lovers of all things yummy.

16 | Values January 2017

Established in 1982, The Pink House has built a faithful following of local foodies who can’t get enough of the made-from-scratch lunches, brunches and delectable desserts. These local favorites are served in a pink Victorian home

turned tea house in the downtown historic district of Claremore, Oklahoma, providing the perfect setting for love. “When I bought the Pink House in 2007, my passion was to create a place for friends to connect over great food and a wonderful pot of tea,” said Owner Margo Stewart. “Everything we do from the unique décor to the delicious cuisine, is done for the pleasure of our guests, to give them a place to relax and connect with friends and family.”

The locals will tell you that everything on the menu is good at The Pink House, but over-the-top yummy sounds and smiles follow mentions of baked fudge, chicken enchilada casserole and quiche. Maybe your Valentine is deserving of a sweet dessert made especially for the sweet like a chocolate layer dessert, butterscotch layer or coconut cream pie. By Deanna Rebro A thick, lush, head-turning landscape in the summer starts in winter. So much of caring for a lawn comes down to knowing what needs to be done and when to do it. The first step to a great yard is knowing who to call before spring. For the past 11 years, Sooner Lawn has been delivering a six-step lawn care program from early spring through fall that gets rid of weeds and nourishes grass so it will look good year-round. Owner and U.S. Army Captain Michael Bolton says that early spring is the best time to begin preparing your lawn. Sooner Lawn’s sixstep program begins with an application of pre-emergent

herbicide for crabgrass control, continues with additional weed control and fertilizers during spring and summer, and ends with a winterization weed control in the fall. While many homeowners treat their own lawns, the

particular grass at the right times throughout the year for optimum results, applying lime to regulate proper soil ph to allow maximum effectiveness of fertilizers, and monitoring for insects and diseases. One of the hallmarks of

Sooner Lawn professionals take things to the next level. They treat lawns with the right formulations for that

Sooner Lawn is quick results. “We don’t have to tell our customers their lawns are getting better. They can see improvement each time we’re there,” says Michael. One customer, president and landscaping chairman of The Reserve at Battle Creek said, “The Reserve looks better that it has ever looked in the past, thanks to the Sooner crew. They are very professional and take great pride in their work. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a lawn care company.” Michael adds that Sooner Lawn’s prices are below

most, if not all, other local lawn care companies. And their prompt and professional customer service goes above and beyond expectations. “We keep our customers happy by offering great service at a great price with great results. Just give us a chance to prove it,” he says. A five-year customer echoes his comment. “We have found Michael’s work to be very good, as well as his pricing. We would highly recommend his services.” Sooner Lawn serves residential and commercial customers throughout Tulsa, Broken Arrow, Bixby, Jenks, Sand Springs, Owasso and Claremore. Optional services include fertilization of flowerbeds, aeration for more effective watering and nourishment, perimeter control, insect control of fleas, ticks, ants, spiders and chinch bugs, mole control, turf disease control and fescue seeding. They are fully licensed and insured, and all their recommended work is guaranteed. Sooner Lawn is also accredited with the Better Business Bureau. Preparation now will go a long way toward enjoying the healthy green lawn you want this summer. And you don’t have to lift a finger except to call Sooner Lawn. WITH TONY

The advent of Pinterest and HGTV has turned many of us into home design lovers. But anyone who has taken the initiative to turn a total kitchen renovation into a reality knows that the implementation isn’t always as dreamy as it looks. Tony Sementi of Tile by Tony offers his clients the opportunity to achieve that big T.V. reveal without all the drama. Completing a remodel is more about contracting and scheduling than simply checking out tile samples. The more thorough a remodel, the more downtime that area of the home will experience. Tony’s team does it all, from framing to sheetrock to creating their own cabinetry. “We can’t all afford to have HGTV experts come in, so we need a local partner to offer that kind of creative quality,” he explained. Tony’s discovered he had a natural aptitude for remodeling after building houses with his own father in his younger years. These days, Tony’s team of gifted craftsmen handles almost every aspect of a home remodel. So how do you take your dreams of granite countertops and heated floors to the next level? Set up a time to meet with Tony. He will assess your needs, find out what you want to achieve, and come up with suggestions. His visit will end with an estimate, but it will also give you a solid direction 26 | Values January 2017

and a plan of action. Next, he will work with you to select the materials. Tony’s store offers an impressive selection of cutting edge materials. Some of the more remarkable products include tile that offers the illusion of wood flooring. Homeowners get the beauty of hardwood floors, but the ability to withstand the constant foot traffic of a growing family. Tony is also up to date on other design trends, including authentic barn wood plank walls and flooring, heated floors, stainless steel countertops and synthetic granite. He carries products from vendors with whom he has maintained partnerships over many decades. When a project commences, Tony oversees every aspect of a project. Back at the store, his home team handles constant contact with homeowners. The seasoned craftsman lives by an admirable creed: “Always deliver more than people expect. People know we’re going to do good work, but we like to blow them away.” To get started on your remodel or check out some of the latest design trends in real life, stop by Tony’s store in Catoosa.
