GOING STRONG

For Sixty Years in Claremore BY AMY BETH DOBBINS

J

ack Kissee opened the doors to the Jack Kissee Ford dealership, in the spring of 1958, just off of Main Street in Claremore. In 1963, business was bustling and there was a need for expansion. Kissee Ford moved to its location on Lynn Riggs Blvd. where it remains strong to this day. Stephen J. Kissee, Owner and son of the late Jack Kissee, is now at the wheel, steering the family business with great success. In a time where businesses, seemingly, open and shut overnight, how has Kissee Ford thrived for sixty years? “It’s the way we treat people,” Steve explains. “The internet may have changed business for customers in terms of being able to see the availability of inventory, but the internet doesn’t change who you can trust. It’s all about relationship. We have so many repeat customers. We excel at building relationships, and we are here to stay.” Marking milestones and going the extra distance in customer service are where the rubber meets the road at Kissee Ford, both in the showroom and the service department—from the first visit, where an individual is warmly welcomed, to servicing a vehicle long after its purchase. Steve recalls helping make many a sixteen-year-old’s birthday very sweet. In one instance, the Kissee Ford team even coordinated with the parents to deliver a newly purchased

ride to their residence while they were out to dinner, celebrating their daughter’s birthday. When the new driver arrived home, she was met with a huge surprise, adorned with a giant bow. The company has had many opportunities to serve several generations of families. One couple came to know and trust them so much that they literally asked Steve to find a vehicle for them, giving no specs as to what they wanted, and vowed to purchase it, unseen. They told him that they trusted him to find whatever would best fit their needs. Steve takes great pride in serving in a business started by his parents and in his hometown. He was raised in Claremore and graduated from Claremore High School. In 1976, after college, he returned to work for the dealership, learning the ropes from the ground up. While his natural family members are involved in the business, he explains that the employees of Kissee Ford have become his family as well. The office manager, for instance, has been with the company since 1981. The sales manager has been a valued employee since 1989. And the list goes on, every single member playing a valuable part of the success equation and translating into a great customer experience. Kissee Ford is community driven

in multiple ways. It participates in Ford’s “Drive For Your School” fundraiser events for local districts, taking new vehicles to a school site. Then, Ford donates $20 to the district’s fundraiser for every test drive of a new vehicle. The dealership also awards yearly scholarships for students attending Rogers State University and supports FFA auctions along with sponsoring numerous community events. Such a big accomplishment demands a big celebration. Jack Kissee Ford intends to celebrate its 60th on Thursday, June 28; Friday, June 29; and Saturday, June 30. Customers can stop in and enjoy the festivities. There will be a cookout, drawings for door prizes and special pricing on all inventory, new and used—all as a giant ‘THANK YOU’ to the public for their loyalty. Kissee explains: “We are looking forward to this celebration and to show our appreciation to the customers. We want all our customers, our loyal ones and new to come out and enjoy the celebration!” Their grand prize drawing for $5,000 off the price of a new or used vehicle will be Friday, June 29 at 6AM. You need not be present to win.

ROGERS COUNTY JUNE 2018

O

klahoma Freewheel has a vision: “Through bicycling, Freewheel connects Oklahoma’s unique peoples, cultures, communities, and landscapes. We celebrate a happy, healthy, safe and sustainable Oklahoma.” Its mission is to “promote and strengthen cycling tourism in Oklahoma.” And as 2018 marks Oklahoma Freewheel’s 40th year, they will bring their mission and vision to a road that is very dear to Oklahoma’s heart—Historic Route 66. Each year, bicyclers who participate in the Oklahoma Freewheel event travel across Oklahoma during the second week of June, typically beginning near the Texas-Oklahoma border and ending up at Oklahoma’s northern border. This year, the trip will begin on June 9 in Elk City (near the OklahomaTexas panhandle border), follow Oklahoma’s stretch of Historic 66 through Weatherford, El Reno, Luther, Bristow, Catoosa, Miami, and will culminate on June 16 in Joplin, Missouri, right across the Oklahoma-Missouri border. Daily mileage on the ride varies from 50 to 75 miles per day with participants camping in rural Oklahoma communities each

night. This year, the bicyclists will spend the fifth night of their trip in Catoosa, where they will be greeted with shelter and refreshments before embarking on the fifth day of their seven day trip—a day in which they will pass some of Rogers County’s most historic sites, like Catoosa’s Blue Whale, Claremore’s Will Rogers Hotel and J.M. Davis Gun Museum, and Foyil’s Andy Payne Memorial. Route 66 has been forgotten by the mapmakers; however, its history lives on in the hearts and minds of Americans who live and travel along “the Mother Road.” The highway was built in 1926 and stretched from Chicago, Illinois to Los Angeles California. It runs like a diagonal banner across Oklahoma, from its northeast shoulder to its southwestern waistband. As Oklahoma Freewheel’s bicyclers travel through, they will be reminded that even though Oklahoma landscape changes dramatically as they cross the state, one thing does not change—the friendly and welcoming nature of the people who live here.

hy do we vote for one person rather than another? Is it their reputation for honesty and integrity in our community? Is it the common ground they share with us? Is it our confidence that they have the ability to achieve results? People tend to vote for candidates who are superlative at the following tasks: • Bringing new perspectives and ideas. • Be willing to collaborate and provide options. • Have confidence in their ability to get results. • Listen, really listen, to constituents. • Have a full understanding of what needs to be done to improve lives and lifestyles of those being served. • Avoid potential pitfalls. • Build compelling solutions to problems and needs. • Connect personally. Those are some of the qualities possessed by Carl Parson, Republican, who is running for State Representative, District 8. Carl Parson has spent many years in his beloved community helping others. 1. Bring only what you need. When planning your next vacation, pack a lighter wallet, suggests RCB Bank Vice President, Security Officer Christy Wild. “Bring only the amount of cash you will need and maybe one credit card.” 2. Leave your debit card at home. “Especially if you are traveling internationally,” says Wild. “Debit cards tie directly to your bank account. If fraudulent charges are made, it is possible money may be taken out of your account that day.” If debit card fraud goes unnoticed for a number of days, thieves may deplete your funds. Credit card fraud is not an immediate financial impact on you. 18 |

VALUES

Under the Fair Credit Billing Act (FBCA) and the Electronic Fund Transfer Act (EFTA), federal law limits your liability for unauthorized charges, but your protection depends on the type of card and when you report the loss. After you report fraud, your bank has to investigate and process your claim, which takes time. Rules pertaining to refund timeframes vary between types of fraud. Ask your bank for details. 3. Keep an eye on your account. “From the time your card leaves your wallet until the time it returns, it is technically at risk,” Wild says. “It is crucial to monitor your accounts.” Proper monitoring will help you find discrepancies.

ROGERS COUNTY JUNE 2018

Early detection and fast action to alert your credit card company and bank is the key to protecting your money. Many credit card companies and banks offer text banking. This is a great fraud detection tool as you can set up transaction alerts. Set an alert to notify you each time a transaction occurs on your account. This will help you spot charges you did not initiate. Text banking message, data rates and fees may apply. You can also download your bank’s mobile banking app. This is another good tool that allows you to scan your accounts anytime from practically anywhere. “Do not log in to your account on a public Wi-Fi network,” Wild says. “Fraudsters hack

public networks and can watch you from the shadows.” 4. Tell your bank when and where you are going. Before you hit the road, notify your bank and tell them your travel plans. “It’s added protection,” Wild says. “It alerts them to keep a closer eye on your account. Plus, it helps to make sure they don’t decline your card when you are making purchases in another state, which to a bank may look like suspicious activity.” Invest in yourself. RCBbank.com/GetFit. in the workplace, Alex received the coveted “Governor’s Disability Award of Excellence” in 2017. Employee of the Year, Tracy Daubert’s story began thirty-six years ago, when she was born with a chromosomal anomaly.. Her parents were told that if she lived she would have severe intellectual disabilities and delayed development. Undaunted by this diagnosis, Traci’s parents took her home and treated her just like her sisters. With physical, occupational and speech therapies and other supports, Traci flourished. During Traci’s senior year at Union High School, she participated in Goodwill’s Transition Work Adjustment Program. After graduation in 2000, she came to work for Goodwill’s contract services, where she participated in collating, packaging and assembly work that Goodwill performs for

local companies. Five years later, Traci transitioned to Goodwill’s hospital enclaves, shredding confidential documents at SouthCrest Hospital, and later at OSU Medical Center. During that period, she developed social and work skills and learned how to function as a member of a team to accomplish tasks. When a new position as a member of a cleaning enclave at St. John Hospital in Broken Arrow became available, she accepted it. The job was a perfect fit for her. It challenged her to learn new work skills, while interacting with hospital personnel and members of the community. When that contract ended, she joined Goodwill’s cleaning enclave at OSU Medical Center where she continues to thrive today. Despite what she has had to overcome, Traci always wears a smile. She is very active and loves the

social aspect of her job, particularly the interaction with hospital staff. She feels comfortable and at home at work with her friends and staff, and is proud that she is part of the community. “Goodwill has been such a big part of Traci’s life,” says her mother. “She has been working with Goodwill for seventeen years, and if she could work every single day she would!” As you have read, your donations are helping people in our community overcome considerable challenges to meet their goals. Your clothing and household items can be donated at your neighborhood Goodwill donation center.

RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH

The Rock House

or those who want to experience a “True Dining Experience”, hop in your vehicle and head towards the beautiful Kiamichi Mountain Range. Nestled in a 1920 remodeled rock home in the middle of the Balzanna’s 280 acre spread, a dream of owning a restaurant was fulfilled by Sam and Tami Balzanna. Moving here from Pennsylvania, they chose this area as a fine place to raise their five children. They opened “The Rock House” in April of 2012. Initially, all members of the family had a hand in getting the business running. Serving carved to order Angus steaks, pasta and her grandmother’s crab cake recipe, they have pleased many diners. Folks come from not only Oklahoma, but Arkansas and Texas as well, to dine at this unique dining establishment. The fine dining and spectacular views of the Kiamichi Mountains, Potato Hills and Buffalo Mountain make this a one of a kind “true dining experience”.

Thus, in an effort to make this information more readily available to Oklahoma consumers the MIO Restaurant Program was born. BEST FIREWORKS WITH THE LARGEST SELECTION BY BEKI AKIN

H

ere in North America we celebrate our freedom and those who have and do serve our great nation for that freedom. Across this nation on July 4th, celebrations will include fireworks some little, some noisy and some will create huge beautiful colors that light up the skies. Interesting fact about fireworks. They were discovered in China. All by accident sometime between 600-900 AD by mixing some common kitchen seasoning along with charcoal, sulfur and a few other ingredients created a form of gunpowder. Then to see how to get this formula to ignite, it was put into bamboo shoots and thrown into the fire to produce a loud blast. There you have it, Fireworks were

born! By the Renaissance time, schools were learning how to make fireworks produce brilliant colors and booming sounds. On July 3, 1776, the day before the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence, John Adams wrote a letter to his wife in which he presaged the role of fireworks in Fourth of July celebrations. “The day will be most memorable in the history of America,” he predicted. “I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade…bonfires and illuminations [a term for fireworks] From one end of this continent to the other, from this

JUST IN TIME FOR EARLY VOTING Rogers County Adds New Satellite Location BY AMY BETH DOBBINS

R

ogers County is passionate about making every effort to provide accessibility to its voters. “The state legislature has approved large counties to have satellite locations for early voting,” explains Julie Dermody, Secretary of the Rogers County Election Board. “Rogers County has a large physical area, and there is a need for voters to be able to vote more conveniently.” For this reason, a new satellite location is being added for early voting in elections in Owasso. The satellite will be available to any and all voters, legally registered to vote in Rogers County, at Central Baptist Church 9001 N. 145th E. Ave. Owasso, OK on Thursday, June 21 and Friday, June 22 from 8am-7pm and Saturday, June 23 9am-2pm, in advance of the June 26 primary election date. Additional dates for early voting in future elections will also take place at this location. As always, Rogers County voters may also cast their early ballots at the Rogers County Election Board on those same dates and times; however, the new location allows for flexibility and convenience if a citizen works or lives closer to the satellite location. If a citizen waits to cast his or her vote on the election date (June 26 for the primary election, for instance), the vote will need to be cast at a designated polling place to which he or she has been assigned. By allowing early voting to be held at two convenient locations, the Rogers County Election Board, as well as the new satellite location in Owasso, Rogers County is hopeful that greater participation will take place. Recent inquiries by citizens has prompted the satellite location. The hope is for turnout to be a record one this year. Interest in upcoming state issues such as education 36 |

and legalization of medical marijuana as well as a record number of candidate filings have certainly sparked a renewed interest in the local electorate. To have two locations for casting an early vote should help to process the anticipated rush at the ballot box more efficiently. The opening of the polls for early voting on a Saturday will provide a measure of convenience as well. Whether making plans to vote early at the Rogers County Election Board in Claremore or at the new satellite location in Owasso, or waiting until the primary election day to cast a vote at the assigned polling place, voters can ensure a smooth process by making a few preparations. Simply check your status as a voter by going online at: www. rogerscountyelectionboard.org . There, you will be able to enter your first and last name as well as your date of birth to make sure that you are currently registered to vote. This website has information as to which precinct you are registered and your polling place location (if you chose not to vote early at one of the early voting locations). There is even a map to direct you to your polling place on election day. If you are not yet registered to vote, you may easily register by printing the registration application from www. rogerscountyelectionboard.org, fill it out and mail it to the election board. You may register to vote in person at your local tag agency, library or the Rogers County Election Board in Claremore. The website also allows you to review and print a sample ballot in advance of voting, so that you can research and understand the issues and be familiar with the candidates running for office before voting on them. When it is time to cast your ballot,

***Early voting for the Runoff Primary Elections will be available at the same locations on Aug 23, 24 and 25 and for the General Elections on Nov 1, 2 and 3. whether on a scheduled date for early voting or on election day, you will simply need to take your voter i.d. or a state or federally-issued i.d., along with you to sign in. “We really want this to be a fun and memorable experience for our voters,” explains Dermody. Rogers County makes every effort to make it so. A selfie booth is provided onsite, so voters can enjoy commemorating the voting experience after having cast their ballots. Voters are also encouraged to bring their children along to witness the experience, and Rogers County, happily, hands out “Future Voter” stickers to those children that choose to tag-along. Then, take delight in the fact that you have participated in your right and responsibility as an informed voter and made a difference!
