une, 2021: Oklahoman’s are no strangers to outlaw history, with legends and tales of a bygone era romanticized in story and song. The Catoosa Historical Society and Museum is excited to share WANTED: Dead or Alive – Oklahoma’s Legendary Outlaws, an exhibit of the state’s most infamous criminals from before Statehood, through the late 1950s. This thrilling event will be held at the Catoosa Historical Museum, 217 S. Cherokee Street, beginning June 7 through Aug. 9, 2021, on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays (excluding July 3), from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is FREE. Visitors will experience a photographic journey through time, in an exhibit comprised of images of some of the state’s most famous criminals, drawn directly from the records of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the University of Oklahoma Western History Collections, the National Archives, Oklahoma Historical Society archives, and private lenders. Mugshots, crime scene locations, and more can be viewed in a timeline spanning over 70 years of history. Some familiar names will be recognized, such as The Doolin and Dalton Gangs, Ma Barker and more. Belle Starr and Blue Duck will be also be traveling with this amazing exhibit. Blue Duck was convicted of murder in Ft. Smith and was almost hung. His sentence was commuted, and he died at home of poor health. He is buried at a local cemetery in Catoosa. Many outlaws reputedly passed through town during its primetime. In 1882, Catoosa was the farthest point west that the railroad went, and it was a large,

thriving community. According to local historians, a 1937 newspaper account of the town’s history records the late 1800s Catoosa as “a lawless, godless, hell-roaring Cowtown… the worst in Indian Territory.” Sometimes the stories are not as much about the location as they are the individual,” said Catoosa Historical Society President, Teresa McAfee-O’Donnell. “Although many of the stories feature despicable characters, others tell of people whose lives went temporarily astray.” “We chose the outlaw exhibit because it is interesting and has ties to our local history. The outlaw known as Blue Duck is buried in Catoosa’s Dick Duck cemetery that is down the street,” stated Kayce Nelson, CHS Vice President. “We want to

attract people to the community and to the museum, we think this exhibit is something people will come see.” Catoosa’s history is vast, in that there are so many stories to tell. The Historical Museum is an engaging interpretation of the community’s past and resilience. Teresa’s mother, Georgia E. McAfee, was committed to honoring the lives that built the foundation of the town, and she is recognized as being instrumental in the establishment of the Catoosa Historical Society, as well as her vision for the museum complex, which was built under her leadership and direction. The main building of the complex is an exact replica of their original train depot, built to its exact specifications. The Charismatic Characters of Claremore J BY MACY GOODNIGHT

une, 2021: There is no denying that the beautiful city of Claremore has a rich and vibrant history, with some notable figures garnering fantastic accomplishments. Some of their citizens have made impacts that have been felt around the world. It might have one asking, “Is there something in the water?” The Claremore Museum of History, located at 121 N. Weenonah Ave., is filled with information on these intriguing characters, as well as the fascinating facts on the foundation of this city to today. Admission is free,

and visitors will find an immersive experience, with stellar storytelling and vivid imagery. The mission of the museum “is to create engaging experiences that celebrate history, connect community and inspire creativity.” Mission accomplished. Many visitors are surprised to learn that Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma! was adapted from a play written by author, poet and playwright, Lynn Riggs (1899-1954), who was born and raised in Claremore, and details from his life and work can be discovered here. Amazingly, the “Surrey with the Fringe on Top,” from

the 1955 film, starring Gordon MacRae and Shirley Jones can also be found with this collection. In honor of another Claremore citizen, this year, celebrations are in order for the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 14 mission in 1971, which was piloted by Stewart Roosa (1933-1994). An exhibit is currently on display to honor his accomplishments, with additions to come. Exhibits on Will Rogers, Patti Page, and more are also housed at this magnificent museum. On June 19, Claremore MOH will open their much-anticipated Black History exhibit, “Building Heritage, History and Hope.” Features will include citizen highlights, Black-owned businesses with mapping, and details on the Lincoln school that opened in 1899, before statehood. “A big part of this project has been the community coming together with memories of the Black community, and this really cool celebration of the individuals that came out of Claremore,” said Kelsey Hildebrand, Director of Education and Outreach. “The graduates of the

We have a section on Black military veterans including the first Black cadet, as well as the first Black soldier from Claremore to lose their life in battle. The athletic section covers the Claremore Hall of Fame inductees, the Lincoln Lion state basketball champion team, the semi-pro Claremore Clowns baseball team as well as other noteworthy athletes. The Jones family is highlighted, from W.C. Jones - principal at Lincoln School, his son C.D. Jones - veteran and City of Claremore employee, C.D.’s wife Irene - long time teacher at both Lincoln and Westside Elementary and Rogers County Teacher of the Year, and C Darnell Jones, US Presidential appointed District Judge. We have a section on Religion covering both Mount Zion Baptist Church and Bethel AME church, a section for Claremore’s Black trailblazers including Ronnie Johnson, first OHP Black trooper and a section on Historic Black businesses. In conjunction with the exhibit, we’ve also developed a video montage that is available for viewing and have educational programming in progress so that the MoH can take Claremore’s Black history into our public school system.

A 2016 graduate of Oklahoma State University, she earned her Bachelor’s in Natural Resources and Wildlife Biology, and in 2021 earned her Master’s Degree from the University of Tulsa in Museum Science and Management. After OSU, she worked as a Wildlife Biologist for the National Ecological Observatory Network for three years but returned home to be close to her family, and to make a career in outreach and programming. “I am extremely passionate about informal education and outreach, and creating opportunities for anybody to learn something new about the world around them,” said Kelsey. “For a

child to walk into a museum and see that an astronaut went to their own school can really show them that are no limits.” Kelsey is finding inspiration in the history and people of Claremore, and bringing some of her own innovation and vision to the future of the museum. “I’m really excited to get to work with these people that have a lot of really big ideas,” said Kelsey. Dr. James Webb Specializes in Helping Complex Back Pain O

steoporosis can be as deadly as heart disease. In the 1980s, the disease was naturally considered a normal process of aging. As medicine evolved, it became evident that Osteoporosis was connected to fractures. Today, medicine shows that not everyone with Osteoporosis has low bone density and people can have ‘fragility fractures’ as a result of the disease’s progression. “There are thousands of doctors who do kyphoplasty in the U.S. and very few actually treat the underlying osteoporosis. As an interventional musculoskeletal radiologist, there are very few of us who actually focus on treating osteoporosis and not just fixing fractures. I was the first in Oklahoma to have a free standing clinic focused on treating osteoporosis, not just the fractures with kyphoplasty, but medically treating the underlying osteoporosis. There are probably less than 20 doctors around the country that I know that do this to the high degree that we do,” explained Dr. Webb. Though the majority of

Osteoporosis patients are over 60, he has treated patients as young as 18, and many in their 30s. He is helping drive research for vertebral fractures. Dr. Webb is offering free bone density scans to qualified patients to improve access to care as well as raise awareness of the disease.

Unfortunately, problems with bone health can impact younger patients and it also affects men.” Webb said. “Like heart disease or a stroke,

people think it can’t happen to them until it’s too late. Fractures from bad bone health are a common cause of misdiagnosed back pain. If you’re concerned about your bone health, or you have back pain that no one has been able to help, give us a call.” Interested participants should call the Dr. James Webb & Associates office at 918-260-9322 for a prescreening. Priority will be given to those who have fallen and broken a bone, have a family history of osteoporosis, or take certain medications proven to reduce bone density. Pre-screening is needed to make sure that the test is medically indicated as well as to avoid regulatory hurdles. “I really wanted to offer free screening to all patients who needed it--to raise awareness of bone health and to give back to this community that has been so supportive of us,” Webb says. “Unfortunately, government and insurance regulations actually won’t allow us to do that, so our focus is really for uninsured patients who need bone density testing”

Osteoporosis occurs when the body’s bones become weak from low bone density, low bone quality, or both. As a result, bones become weak and may break from a fall or, in serious cases, from something as slight as sneezing or minor bumps. Most often, osteoporosis is a silent killer until a fracture occurs. “There is hope for slowing down and even reversing the effects of bad bone health,” said Webb. “The key is to catch it as early as possible and then treat it medically to reduce the risk of future fractures.” Osteoporosis is often underdiagnosed. At least once a month he sees a patient who has been told they don’t have osteoporosis when in fact they do have the disease. One of the ways doctors screen is by using a DEXA bone density scan. This test does two things: Screens for risk in asymptomatic people; and

helps determine if a person’s bone density is low enough to be put on medication. Screening is good if you have a family history or any concern about Osteoporosis. Essentially, a bone density scan compares bone density to the bones of an average healthy young adult. The test results can help determine if you have osteoporosis, are at risk for it, and can be used to determine the overall risk for having a fracture. “Advanced CT scans and X-ray’s can miss half the fractures; and two-thirds of the unfound vertebral fractures heal before they receive medical treatment,” explained Dr. Webb. “A physical exam is the most technical way to detect a fracture. We treat the patient and not the imaging because we know that many fractures are painful for weeks before we can detect the collapse on imaging.” He specializes in innovative less invasive treatments to treat Osteoporosis and fractures before they become severe. He uses a variety of treatments including kyphoplasty, steroid injections, ablations and other pain-relieving procedures.
