Garden Party&Tour BY DANIELLE STOLTZ
F
or nearly three decades, Safenet Services, a domestic abuse and sexual assault shelter, has been a safe place for over 3,800 women and children in Rogers and Mayes Counties. This spring, Safenet invites the community to partner with them as they put a new spin on their longest-standing fundraiser, Garden Tour. For the first time, Safenet will host a Garden Party on Friday, May 31st in combination with the Garden Tour on Saturday, June 1st. “We think it will be a great weekend with the theme being ‘Nurturing our gardens so survivors may blossom,’” said Executive
Director, Donna Grabow. Grabow has been with Safenet Services since the beginning in 1990. At that time, there were 12 beds and a crisis line, and she was the only paid staff member. Today, Safenet’s Services have expanded to include a 35-bed domestic abuse shelter, counseling and advocacy, support and parenting groups, protective order assistance, financial empowerment and supervised visitation. In 2018, they provided more than 8,500 safe nights for 186 victims and their families. “Statistics say 1 in 4 women will be affected by domestic violence; that’s someone that you know,”

Development Specialist, Alexandra Seifried said. “When I first started here, I was amazed at the level of community support Safenet has. We have been embraced by the community and they realize just how important the mission is.” The weekend will kick off Friday, May 31, at 7 p.m. with a Garden Party and Flower Show at the Will Rogers Memorial. There will be drinks and hors d’oeuvres in addition to a Garden Party hat parade. Safenet is still accepting entries from individuals and businesses who are interested in submitting an arrangement. The flower show entries include live, silk, or dried arrangements. All flower show entries will be included in a silent auction, too. The Garden Tour is the next day, Saturday, June 1, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is a self-guided tour of several Claremore residential gardens and yards, as well as the Master Gardeners Teaching Garden at Will Rogers Park. “We’ve partnered with Master Gardeners again for this year’s tour, and they help homeowners prepare for their garden to be on the tour by identifying plants and labeling them,” Seifried said. Each Garden Tour stop will have a booth with themed items for sale. Some of the booths are Garden Gems (jewelry), Garden Treasures (yard accessories) or Garden Goodies (baked goods). (continued from previous page) jewelry and yard accessories are contributed from Safenet’s resale shop, Second Impressions. “The fundraiser impacts the women and children in our shelter in tangible ways. For example, it helps transport a mom to additional job training so she can earn above minimum wage and be financially independent, which is really important for them not to go back to an abusive situation. Any donation stays here in Rogers and Mayes counties, so your financial support helps people right here in our community,” said Seifried. This year, a $15 ticket includes both or either event and will go on sale May 24th at Safenet and the Pixley Lumber Carpet Department. For more information, visit safenetservices. org/events. All proceeds from the weekend will benefit Safenet Services. If you or someone you know is a victim of domestic violence and sexual assault, contact Safenet at 918-341-1424. “There’s a way to be healthy in your relationship. If it’s not healthy, get help,” Grabow said.

any events are hosted by the Indian Women's Pocahontas Club each year to inspire and educate as part of their mission. They have had picnics since the inception of the club, which were held at various ranches and locations throughout the years. Starting 13 years ago they began having the picnics at the Dog Iron Ranch, Will Rogers birthplace in Oologah, Oklahoma. On May 18, 2019, the 13th annual Old-Fashioned Picnic will be held again at the Ranch. The event’s roots dig deep in the history of the Cherokee people, as an annual gathering that embraces the sense of community between friends and neighbors. The event is open to the public and is free to enter; however, a $10 or more donation is suggested. Guests to the event will find music

and entertainment, traditional Cherokee games, hog fry, trout pond, vendors and much more. Principal Chief Bill John Baker will be an honored guest at the event. The event will begin at 10 a.m., gates open at 9 a.m. On June 29, 2019, The Club will host their 120th birthday at the JM Davis Gun Museum and will unveil a new Cherokee history exhibit at the museum at that time. To celebrate this tremendous occasion, guests will enjoy a birthday party, complete with a birthday cake. Intensely vibrant and intricate is the fabric of Cherokee Nation heritage. and guarded this history, as well as the traditions and values of the Cherokee people. Established June 29, 1899, The Pocahontas Club began in Oowala, in the Cooweescoowee District of the Cherokee Nation in Indian Territory. Its inception came with strong ideals of a small group of intelligent and cultured girls from the Female Seminary. They started out as a social club and soon blossomed as caretakers of their culture, heritage and communities. Today, the organization calls Claremore home and is the oldest chartered club in Oklahoma. Council Member, Keith Austin, strongly supports the mission of the club, having grown up as the son of an extraordinarily active member. “The Pocahontas Club has always been the keepers of culture and history of the

Cherokee people when the tribe was unable to.” he said. The Pocahontas Club arose to defend against cultural oblivion. “One of their missions was, and remains to be, to keep the Cherokee culture and history alive,” said current club President, Vicki Baker. The club proudly counts Oklahoma’s favorite son, Will Rogers, among its past members. In the early years, some men were allowed in the club. Rogers was a
member before he became a celebrity. Club membership today is exclusively for Cherokee women who can trace their ancestry back to the Dawes Roll. Active member, Ollie Starr, is quick to halt any ideas that The Pocahontas Club is merely a social club. “We strive to make strong impacts in our communities,” she said. “It’s about our history and what we do to preserve it.” Previous Club President Debra (cont. on next page)

West adds, “We have to be visible all of the time, and we try to be out there supporting the rest of our communities. We are movers and shakers passing down the wisdom we have committed to protect.” In addition to active relationships within the community, the club provides annual scholarships, endowments, and support to Cherokee citizens to support higher education. “We are the caretakers of our culture, heritage, our history and our communities, with an emphasis on education,” said West. “The Cherokee have always valued education,” added Baker. “It began with one student in the beginning, and now we provide assistance to around 15 students a year,” she said.

PROVEN HOME IMPROVEMENT SOLUTIONS CUSTOMERS TRUST ABC FOR THEIR EXTERIOR RENOVATIONS

klahoma, where the wind comes sweepin’ down the plain, wreaking havoc on home exteriors in its wake. ABC Seamless specializes in remodeling exteriors and protecting homes with the strongest materials available on the market. They have been providing the best quality in steel siding, roofing and guttering since 2014. The steel used in their products has been tested to withstand 160mph winds. “You get what you pay for,” Leanna said. “Our steel products are guaranteed for the lifetime of your home, with a written warranty.” Ed owned his construction company for over 10 years before he decided to join the ABC famliy of franchises. Leanna is the kind voice on the line when customers call for a quote appointment, and she also manages the business side of ABC. Together, they are thankful

for working together to build a successful business they can be proud of. At the heart of their passion are their loyal customers and the new clients that come mostly by word-of-mouth. “The best part about our work is seeing the finished product and the look of satisfaction on the customer’s face,” said Ed. “The product speaks for itself, but it’s the customers that we maintain friendships with that mean so much.”

after Their customers believe in them too and are eager to share their experience with ABC. “To say we are satisfied is an understatement,” said Lisa Helm. “They work so well together, like no other couple could work together. They’re just a pleasure to work with.” ABC completely remodeled the exterior of their 5500 square foot home near Big Cabin. “We are on top of a hill, so the wind blows constantly,” Lisa said. “We’ve had this house sided four times, and for the last time with ABC.” In addition to siding, the Helms had their entire roof replaced, as well as add-ons in their garage, and an enclosed back porch. The Helms were surprised to find that the insulation factor involved with steel roofing and siding is remarkably quiet. “I am super proud of them,” Lisa said. “I trust them and am thankful for a beautiful job. their work than Ed and Leanna.” A severe storm had caused significant damage to the home of Jeff and Randy Lewis near Fort Gibson Lake. After the storm had passed, the Lewis family found their roof needed replacing, and covers of their porch and Jacuzzi pad were in shambles. ABC replaced their roof with steel slate-look tiles and worked to reconstruct their porch and Jacuzzi cover. “This is the second roof we’ve had to replace because we live by the lake,” said Randy. “The wind is always so bad here.” Randy is so proud of the roof ABC built for her. “People stop and look at it as they drive by because it’s so beautiful,” she said. “I even stop at the end of my drive when I get home to admire it.” The Lewis family was especially pleased with the new patio ABC built for them. “I told them I wanted something different and unique, and

now my patio is to die for,” said Randy. Jeff and Randy know they will enjoy the exterior of their home for the life of their home. The greatest impact of their experience was the customer service they received. “Their quality and workmanship are unsurpassed,” said Randy. “They obviously take so much pride in their work.” For more information, or to get a quote on your home or business exterior, visit their website at www. abcseamlessneok.com, or call Leanna at (918) 695-1097.

ost people dream of having the perfect body and many afford the time and energy to get to the gym and get the workouts in that are required for a fit and toned
physique. What if there was a way to tone and tighten trouble areas on the body without having to work out at all? The professionals at BA Med Spa are experts at providing the

ultimate in services that help their clients feel their absolute best. With a range of services involving beauty and weight loss, they strive to stay current with the latest in technology to ensure their clients are receiving the highest quality and most comprehensive plans. The latest and greatest offering at BA Med Spa is EMSCULPT, and is the ultimate fat burner and muscle builder, for a fit and toned body without the extensive time in the gym! Co-owner, Malissa Spacek and office manager, Sam Spacek, are thrilled to introduce this exciting new option as a complement to the spectrum of services they provide. Initial consultations are always free. “If you decide EMSCULPT is for you, we will ensure you understand the science behind EMSCULPT, and exactly how it will work, as well as what is happening in your body,” said Sam. “This tool works out muscles, and the healthy side effect is that you will lose weight.” This nonsurgical procedure is the latest trend for fat reduction, but unlike other similar services, EMSCULPT is proven to build muscle, ultimately increasing weight loss, and speeding up metabolism. These technologies are meant to use in conjunction with a healthy lifestyle, supplementing good diet and activity, and not intended to substitute mindful nutrition or regular exercise. For
abdomen, buttocks and thighs, it is cleared by the Food and Drug Administration. “This technology is proven to increase cellular turnover rates, which help to build muscle,” Sam said. “At the same time, it pushes lactic acid out, for quicker recovery.” “It’s basically like doing 20,000 crunches or 20,000 squats in 30 minutes,” said Malissa. “It’s really like an intensive work out involving involuntary contractions you could not make on your own.” “EMSCULPT is effective in the use of high intensity focused electromagnetic energy to trigger supramaximal contractions that are not achieved without assistance,” Malissa said. “Best part: It’s truly effective, painless and there is no downtime.” One treatment with EMSCULPT includes four sessions; two 30 minutes sessions a week, for two weeks. One treatment cost is $3,000. “Case studies show over one treatment you will see 16-
19% fat reduction, and 19-23% muscle gain in the treated area,” Sam said. “In our experience, clients have seen results after one or two sessions.” As with all services and procedures offered at BA Med Spa, each client’s health is the top priority. “It’s a common trend in America to gain or lose weight rapidly,” said Sam. “We want you to be healthy, to maintain a healthy lifestyle, and get control of your diet. We do want you to lose weight, but our main goal is to get you into a doable lifestyle and maintain your health. You’ll see the best results if you’re healthy.”
Schedule your EMSCULPT consultation today by calling (918) 872-9999 or visit their website at www.baweightspa.com for more information.

Apple Pie with Milk (serves 8) Crust: • 3 cups flour • 1 teaspoon salt • 2 tablespoons sugar • 2 sticks butter, cold and cut into 1/4” cubes • 1/2 cup ice water In a large bowl combine the flour, salt and sugar. Add the cold butter pieces, and cut into the flour, using a pastry blender or two knives. Alternatively, you can put ingredients (except water) into the bowl of a food processor and pulse 20 times. Add cold water and gently blend into the flour mixture until you have a soft dough. You may need to add a bit more water, but don’t let the dough get too wet. Do not knead the dough, just work it together with your hands into 2 equal size discs. 36 |

Wrap each disc tightly in plastic wrap and put into the refrigerator for at least 45 minutes. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. When ready to assemble the pie, remove the dough from the refrigerator and roll one out on a floured board. Roll into a circle that will fit into a 9” pie pan. Lift the dough and place into the pan, pressing lightly into the bottom and up the sides. Roll the second disc in the same way, but slightly larger than the first. Apple Filling: • 7 or 8 Granny Smith apples, peeled and sliced thinly • 1/2 cup granulated sugar • 1/2 cup brown sugar • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

• 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1/3 cup flour • 2 tablespoons butter, cut into pieces In a large bowl, combine the apples, sugars, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt. Pour into crust and dot with butter pieces. Place the second dough over the filling and seal the edges, crimping or pressing with the back of a fork. Using a paring knife, cut slits on the top of the pie to allow steam to escape during cooking. Cover the rim of the pie with aluminum foil pieces or a metal ring made for covering the crust during baking (to prevent burning). Bake for 45-50 minutes, removing the foil or ring after 30 minutes of baking. When the pie is golden, remove from oven and cool completely. Serve in slices with cold milk.
Memories of My Mom BY SHANNON SMITH
M
other’s Day was always a big holiday at our house. We spent the day celebrating my mom, starting with making her breakfast in bed, pinning a corsage to wear to church, and treating her like the queen she was for an entire day. I am the oldest of three girls, and our mom was a homemaker who didn’t work outside the house. Well, that’s not really true. We lived on a ranch, and she often worked outside, even though she preferred to be indoors. She didn’t exercise a day in her life (on purpose), and she detested getting hot or perspiring. However, when she and my dad decided to leave the city life and move their three daughters to the country, well Mom was forced to spend some time outside. The day our bull got out of the pasture into our backyard was a vision I will never forget. Mom ran out with her dish towel and swatted that 1200-pound bull across the backside until he ran through the gate back into the field full of laughing heifers. She rode the John Deere lawn mower all over the yard with a wet towel to wipe her face. She decided to take up gardening one year, and Dad tilled an abandoned horse corral where we planted rows and rows of vegetables. Guess who got to water and weed those rows all summer. It was not my mother. Fortunately, I loved being outside, so I bargained with my sisters, and they took the indoor chores while I basked in the sun and sat on a bucket weeding rows of bean and tomato plants. However, when it came to cooking all those vegetables, once
they were ready for harvest, well that was a different problem. You see, my mom did not like to cook. We nearly always ate dinner at home every night, but Mom wanted to spend as little time as she had to in the kitchen. That was during the 1970s when canned food and tv dinners were all the rage. Cake mixes and Rice-a-Roni came in a box, and all you had to do was add water. We thought we were eating delicious food, and it wasn’t until I was in college that I found out you could make brownies homemade, not from a box. There was one thing my mom would make about once a year, and that was apple pie. She made her own pie dough, and I remember her frustration rolling it out and fitting it into the pie pan. She served slices of her pie in soup bowls because we ate it swimming in a pool of cold milk. It was delicious! My daughter is now grown, and she grew up in a very different kitchen environment than I did. She’ll remember her mother spending a lot more time in the kitchen, and our house usually smelled like food, although not
always pleasant. The days I cooked fish or roasted chiles were days my children preferred to be away from home. They loved visiting their grandmother during their childhood, particularly because she served them hot waffles with margarine for breakfast. It was years before they realized those were Eggo Waffles, and not homemade. My daughter, Meredith and I often cook together, and occasionally we

make my mom’s apple pie. I wish I had a photo of my mother cooking, or forcing that dough into its pan, but we’ve got plenty of photos of Mom working outside. I wish every mom a happy Mother’s Day, with hopes that your children remember the silly stories.

“The majority of my time with a customer is focused on discovering their needs and wishes and helping them design a kitchen that fits both their requirements and their budget,” said Austin. “This often requires out-of-the-box thinking to ensure we give our customers exactly what they want.” Part of this process is discussing the “pains” associated with existing cabinets. “We really dig into what bothers our customers about the cabinets they have - things that agitate them,” Austin said. “People remodel for a reason, whether it’s a restoration job or just needing a change.” A major focus at Premium Cabinets is functionality. To assist in providing the most comprehensive previews for potential cabinetry, Premium utilizes a 3D computer generated design application and a large screen monitor for optimal screening in full color. “With the click of a button, I can show you exactly what your new kitchen will look like,” said Austin. Here, the ideas and inspirations can be worked through in collaboration to explore functionality, style, color and materials. As budget usually dictates the final design, Austin recommends putting the entire wish list into the plans, and then scale back if necessary. “Let’s build the virtual kitchen of your dreams, and try to get you there,” he said. “Kitchen remodels are more affordable with us. Current, completed projects can be found on display and provide an up close and personal experience with design concepts. “I have over 100 sample doors of different styles and colors, which can be previewed in 3D to help plan your project,” Austin said. “I want you to see the full-size versions of people’s kitchens built to immerse yourself in the experience.” Once all the elements are in place and final measurements are submitted for the remodel project, the job can be completed relatively quickly. ince 1947, the Will Rogers Stampede PRCA Rodeo has roped in audiences with its cowboys, competitions and crowd-pleasing events. Now entering its 73rd year, the small but strong local rodeo shows no signs of slowing down as cowboys and cowgirls alike prepare for its return to the Stampede Park in Claremore. “Rodeos are part of our state’s history, part of our heritage – it’s a hometown sport for us, like the NFL or NASCAR,” said Tanya Andrews, director, VisitClaremore. “Rodeos are a tradition that’s been handed down and carried on through the years, through generations. I think small rodeos like the Will Rogers Stampede PRCA Rodeo are a good example of that, and it goes without saying that the rodeo wouldn’t have lasted for so long without so much support from the community.” A five-time PRCA (Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association) winner of Small Rodeo of the Year, the Will Rogers Stampede PRCA Rodeo 2019 will be bringing back all of the old favorites, as well as adding a few new ones for the crowd to enjoy. “Events returning to the rodeo this year will be the usual -- bull-riding,

Stampede, as well as being credited with the discovery of country and western star Reba McEntire. “One thing that’s unique to our rodeo is that it’s where world-known rodeo announcer Clem McSpadden got his start,” Andrews said. “Clem helped to bring national attention and interest to our rodeo, as well as being from the area, so in a way, we’re carrying on something that he helped to grow in popularity. Ours may be a small rodeo, but it continues to grow every year, and it’s centrally located on the rodeo circuit. It’s where many of the contestants choose to come when they’re ‘routing’ their appearances – many (contestants) come back every year because it’s a high-quality rodeo, at which the contestants advance well in their points and wins as they make their way to the national competition. “Last year, we had a record number of contestants – more than 610, which is a lot for a rodeo of our size,” she said. In addition to event competitions, entertainment this year will be provided by Tomas Garcillazo. “Tomas is a traditional charro, rope artist, and horseman and he always performs with his wife, and his young
