TAKE A TRIP BACK IN TIME AT
WILL'S COUNTRY CHRISTMAS BY TOM FINK
T
he Will Rogers Birthplace Ranch in northeast Oklahoma will come alive with the Christmas spirit and holiday-themed fun and activities this year when the ranch hosts the annual Will’s Country Christmas celebration. According to Will Rogers Memorial Museum Executive Director Tad Jones, Will’s Country Christmas is an annual celebration of the season “Will Rogers style,”
with something to enjoy for every member of the family. “A few years ago, we knew that Dry Gulch was going to be sold, and we didn’t know what that would mean for the Christmas Train,” Jones said. “So, we decided to do our own version and started Will’s Country Christmas at the (Will Rogers) Birthplace Ranch to give people something else to go to and enjoy in case the Christmas Train went away.”
Initially billed as a family-friendly outing to show the public how Christmas season was for young Will Rogers at his birthplace home in Oologah, the event grew larger each year, both in scope and attendance, Jones said. “Our first few years were pretty slow, but last year, we had almost all we could handle with crowds – we had such a great turnout,” he said. “Will’s Country Christmas is something we do on a Friday

We know it’s already a tradition for some families, and we hope that we can just continue to make it a great tradition for even more families, to keep growing it, to hopefully add new things for people to see and do, and the chance for the whole family to come out and make new Christmas memories.”

Big Town Fashion, Small Town Charm Photos by Chandler Branzell
BY ASHLEY WAITKUS
Opened in 2012, The District on Main has all the frills of an upscale, big city boutique perfectly paired with small-town charm. Like its name, originally Nesting Necessities and Boutique, the store has evolved over the years until owner Cari Bohannon purchased the building across the street from the first location. Built in 1909, the recently restored store has all the character and charm of a classic the smalltown main street, a feeling perfectly matched by the character and charm of Cari and her staff. The comfortably laid back, yet upscale boutique serves as a one-stop shop for gifts and clothing for Claremore residents. Each item in the store is hand selected by Cari who thoughtfully evaluates each selection to ensure The District on Main is always stocked with a variety of both items and prices to match every taste and budget. Cari’s love for her customers is demonstrated in the on-going process of making sure she carries highly sought after brands which are not sold elsewhere in the town. Rather than making a drive to Tulsa or going through the mundane process of ordering online, Claremore residents can instead spend their afternoon being treated like family while purchasing Kendra Scott, Brighton, Tribal Sportswear, Hobo, Uncle Frank, Nora Fleming, and other brands exclusive to The District on Main in the Claremore area. In addition to the unmatched variety and charm, what sets The District on Main apart from other boutiques is the equally unmatched customer service and dedication to the local community. From sending flowers to a customer after a surgery, to serving on committees at SafeNet and supporting Claremore High School pantry food drive, Cari uses the store as a platform for giving C ri Bohan Ca anno on, n, own wner er, er back to her community and fostering Dist Di stri st rict ri c on Ma Maiin in. friendships with her customers. part of owning the store is waiting on customers and helping them “get out of their comfort zone and try new outfits they wouldn’t have thought to consider”. Her goal is for every customer to feel confident in their clothing and eliminate “buyers remorse” by investing her time and honesty into each customer as they shop and try on outfits. While fashion is a primary purpose for customers returning time and again, the picturesque shop on Will Rogers Boulevard has an expansive variety of items in addition to clothing: jewelry, home decor,
Volcano brand candles and products, Finchberry vegan soaps, locally made goat milk soaps, novelty socks, and of course, a collection of both OU and OSU items sure to please fans. More than just another store, The District on Main hosts events and participates with other community events. Upcoming special events include a November 8th “Girls Night Out” which is a quarterly event offering specials and will include a Holiday Open House this quarter. On November 16th and 17th, the store will be participating in the annual Claremore “Dickens on the Boulevard” and will stay open late
until 9 pm. Black Friday and Shop Small Saturday will bring more specials and new inventory. Specials will be announced on the stores Facebook and Instagram. The District on Main is located at 406 W. Proceed with CAUTION.
How to
Avoid Delays in your mortgage process By Kenneth Wohl RCB Bank Mortgage
Obtaining a mortgage requires a lot of documentation, multiple forms, financial records, thirdparty paperwork; not to mention multiple layers of inspection to verify your information is accurate. Financial changes during your loan process can invalidate paperwork and delay your loan closing. Here are four ways to avoid loan processing setbacks.
No. 1: Inform lender of a job change ASAP. You submit paystubs and W2’s to your lender, but, right before closing, your lender may request employment verification from your employer. If your job or income status changes, this can potentially create a holdup in the loan process; or worse, your loan may be denied, even if you were pre-approved. A job change requires updated documentation and approval verification. Some jobs have a probationary period, which too may affect your loan approval process. If you are planning a job change, let your lender know as early as possible.
No. 2: Resist increasing debt. A few days before closing, your lender runs a final credit check to check for new debt. If you open a new credit card, finance new appliances or furniture, buy a car, co-sign on another loan or take on more debt, new documentation is required. Resist the urge to make big purchases during your loan process. New debt may affect your loan qualification.
Invest in yourself
RCBbank.com/GetFit
No. 3: Avoid big financial changes. Most lenders require up to two months of bank statements for proof of funds used for your home transaction. Changing banks during your loan process may cause a delay in obtaining the necessary statements. Moreover, any large deposits made into your account need explanation. Most loans will allow a gift, but these funds require additional documentation signed by you and the person making the gift.
No. 4: Keep credit card balances low. A large portion of your credit score reflects your credit utilization. Keeping credit card balances under 20 percent of your available balance helps your credit score. When it comes to your mortgage, your credit score helps determine both your interest rate and mortgage insurance (if required). A higher credit score helps you qualify for better rates, saving you money over the life of your loan. Before you make major financial changes, talk to your lender first. This will help you avoid delays or setbacks during your mortgage process. We are here to help even if you’re not an RCB Bank customer. Connect with a local RCB Bank lender to get answers to your lending questions. Find one at RCBbank.com/location.

S Since June 2018, Doe’s Eat Place has been satisfying newcomers and return customers with its steaks, tamales, seafood, and more, but for some, the locallyfranchised chain remains a yet-to-be discovered favorite – something that owner Betty Watowich wants to change. “Business has been good – we’ve got some really good days and some days that could be better, but we’re wanting to change that and have only good days,” Watowich said. “Even though we’ve been open for a few months now, people are still just now learning that we’re here, so we’re hoping more people learn about us through word of mouth.” Doe’s Eat House in Claremore boasts nearly 3,800 square feet with seating capacity starting at 125 in a split-level design, with a bar area upstairs, with work being done to complete a private dining area overlooking downtown Claremore. Menu items include seafood, soups, chicken, and of course, steak. “We have some menu selections for

AITK EY W ASHL
Last year, 200 women and children took shelter at Safenet Services. Safenet’s crisis line received 3,572 calls, and 447 clients recieved counseling. The need in the small community is great, but Safenet staff and volunteers work tirelessly to keep victims of domestic violence and sexual assault safe. Safenet Services is a place for healing for the many victims in Rogers & Mayes Counties. Meeting this high demand involves finances to run the shelter, counsel victims, and provide services. As a result, Safenet Services launched a winter gala to raise much needed funds. Now in its 14th year, Festival of Trees is unlike any other fundraising dinner. The Christmas-focused event is a brilliant holiday party complete with dinner, live entertainment, raffle, silent auction, and live auction, including the auctioning of 15 Christmas trees. Due to the growing size of the event, Safenet moved the venue for this year to Will Rogers Downs Event Center to accommodate more guests, and more auction items. Catered by the venue, the Panhandle Dinner Buffet will have something for every taste. Tulsa Flute Band will be providing live entertainment throughout the dinner and silent auction. The silent auction will be a prime place to finish some early Christmas shopping with items such as Rustic Cuffs, Zoo passes, and gift baskets from local businesses including Froman Propane, Frosted, Elizebeth Jean, Genesis Massage, and many others. Available now, until they sell out, Safenet will be selling Golden Ticket Raffles. They will sell 50 tickets at $100 for your chance to pick one item off the live auction before it

A Home for the Modern Gentleman Bringing Upscale Style and Comfort to Northeast Oklahoma
Photos by Chandler Branzell

S
ince opening its doors in 2016, the Haberdashery has been bringing upscale products to downtown Claremore, offering a touch of class and couture to the men of Claremore and Rogers County, northeast Oklahoma and beyond. As a locally-owned and operated gentlemen’s outfitter, The Haberdashery celebrates two years in operation this November, continuing to bring all the latest fashion trends to the region with men’s clothing both comfortable and casual, with collections designed to bring out the dapper in its customers. “Before we opened, we didn’t really have a place like this in Claremore,” said Justin Michael, who co-owns The Haberdashery with his wife, Audrey Buck. “The idea for it came from seeing the women’s boutiques in Claremore, and thinking that if they were buying

the clothes at these particular shops, their husbands probably weren’t shopping at the other places in town – they had to go to Tulsa. The same lady who spends $400 to buy herself a pair of Frye Boots isn’t going to Walmart to pick up her husband a pair of Spalding tennis shoes. He buys something nice too, something of similar quality, and before we opened, we didn’t really have anything like that in this area.” “The Haberdashery is a casual to very low business casual place where men can come and hang out, where they can buy quality clothing items for their wardrobe, as well as where they can find gifts, get a haircut, and shop for other manly essentials, many of which are Made in Oklahoma items,” he said. “One of the clothing brands we stock is Patagonia – we haven’t been able to find some popular brands of
ROGERS COUNTY NOVEMBER 2018
clothing in Claremore for nearly 30 years, that I know of. We just didn’t have the options – we always found ourselves driving to Tulsa, and every time I get new customers in the store, they look at me and say ‘This (shop) doesn’t really fit here’, and that’s fine – I like to hear that, it means I’m offering unique merchandise, things they can’t find anywhere else in this area.” Among the brand names and items available at the downtown Claremore men’s emporium are OluKai shoes, Patagonia Outdoor Clothing & Gear, Burlebo, Southern Marsh Collection, The Normal Brand, SAXX Underwear, Soxfords socks and ties, Mavi jeans, D’ood men’s products, fine cigars, and more. Michael said that seeing the entrepreneurial vision of some of his fellow Claremore businessmen helped convince him that the region
was “ready” for an upscale men’s apparel and gift item shop such as The Haberdashery. One of the more recent additions to the shop was a barber. “It took me a year to get a barber in here,” he recalled. “I had the shop and this space which was set up to lend itself to people coming in, wanting to hang out, and do some shopping – I knew I couldn’t just have any barber, I had to have the right one, and we finally found the right one with Charley (Lawson). He’s been an incredible addition, and we’re even hoping to expand what he does in the future.” As a barber, Lawson takes the time to get to know his clients, their type of hair, and even offers suggestions to help them look their best. “Charley has never steered me wrong -- I’ve had people cutting my hair for years and my hair never lays down as well as it does when he cuts it,” Michael said. “I’ve seen him look at people, study their hair, get
to know its feel and how it grows, and help them to find the kind of look that’s best for them.” “We have many brands – some brands they sell in Tulsa – that people here have wanted for a long time,” he said. “They come in and they’ll buy things they can’t find anywhere else in the area. Our SAXX Underwear – people were begging for that before we carried it here – Patagonia is available in a few places in Tulsa, the same with Rowdy Gentlemen products, and some new things – things that fit with our motif – they fit with the quality, they fit with the appeal, and they fit with the look that people are going after.” In recent months, Michael said The Haberdashery has begun to carry a limited amount of women’s items as well. “I’m not necessarily looking to get into the women’s market, but I wanted to at least offer a few
things for ladies who come in here with their husbands,” he said. Quality products, convenient location, knowledgeable employees and superior service are only a few of the reasons that The Haberdashery is a man’s “one stop shop” for looking and feeling good. The Haberdashery is located at 407 W. Will Rogers Boulevard in Claremore. Hours of operation are 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1-5 p.m. on Sundays. Haircuts with The Haberdashery’s barber are available by appointment, by calling 918-923-7565. For more information, visit thehaberdasheryok.com, or check them out on Facebook or Instagram.

Ready, Set, SHOP!

When Santa brings his bag of toys to children this year, in Claremore, for a handful of lucky big boys and girls, his bag will have something more practical than toys: Cash. Claremore Chamber of Commerce’s 15th annual Santa Cash Shop Local Promotion will be giving attendees the chance to win some cash prizes this holiday season! $15,500 will be given away this year, courtesy of sponsorships from local business owners. “The Santa Cash Shop Local Promotion is all about keeping the shopping dollars right here in Claremore,” said Katie Thibodeaux, Communications Coordinator for the Claremore Chamber of Commerce. “At participating ticket locations, shoppers can receive a Santa Cash ticket – one ticket for each ten dollars spent – and all the tickets are placed into the drawing for a chance to win. *visit www.claremore.org for all official rules and regulations.” Thibodeaux said the promotion begins on Friday, Nov. 2 and continues through Friday, Dec. 14, with winner drawings to be held Saturday, Dec. 15 at
Cherokee Casino Will Rogers Downs, east of Claremore. “We have a $10,000 prize from Cherokee Casino Will Rogers Downs, a $2,500 prize from Suburban Chevrolet, two $1,000 prizes from Helt Heat & Air,” she said. “Those (prizes) will be drawn live on-site at Will Rogers Downs, but after the event concludes, we will have one final $1,000 drawing from CIEDA (Claremore Industrial and Economic Development Authority). we’ll draw four additional tickets and post one of the (ticket) number on the Chamber website, a different number each week until the person with the winning ticket claims it.” Major sponsors and a few locations from which Santa Cash tickets may be obtained for this year’s Santa Cash Shop Local promotion are J&J Pharmacy (Candy Cane Ticket Sponsor), CIEDA (Mistletoe Sponsor), Suburban Chevrolet (Mrs. Clause Sponsor), RCB Bank, Claremore Daily
Progress, Carol’s Place, Grand Bank, BancFirst, and US Mortgage Corporation (Reindeer Sponsors), Cherokee Casino and Will Rogers Downs (Santa Sponsor), and Helt Heat & Air (Snowflake Sponsor). Additional ticket locations include Claremore Compounding & Pharmacy, Stanley’s Get It Today, Reasor’s, Speedy Lube, Robertson Tire, Claremore Tire Center, TTCU Federal Credit Union, Boom-a-Rang Diner, Walke Brothers Meat, The District on Main, Stillwater Milling, El Maguey, Atwoods, LoliPop A Sweet Boutique, Midtown Rental, Claremore Market, Paradise Donuts, and the Claremore Area Chamber of Commerce. *All locations subject to change. Thibodeaux said the Santa Cash Shop Local promotion only gets better each year in positive response from the public and the support that the annual promotion gives back to the local economy. “Santa Cash has always been such a popular promotion – it gives people the opportunity to shop for Christmas or just shop in general at our fine shops and businesses, the chance at winning a portion of $15,500,” she said. Winners must be present to win at the live drawing, and for the online drawing, ticket holders must present their ticket for verification to an official at the Claremore Chamber of Commerce. For more information, contact the Claremore Chamber of Office at 918-341-2818, email Thibodeaux at chamber@claremore.org or visit the Claremore Chamber of Commerce website at www.claremore.org.

Play the Game
PLAY THE MERCANTILE TRAIL GAME GET YOUR CHANCE TO ENTER A DRAWING FOR A $100 BILL, JUST IN TIME FOR THE HOLIDAYS! The beginning of the Mercantile Trail Game began as a way to encourage people in and outside our community to stop by and visit some of the quaint shops in our area. We’ve tried to make them fun yet challenging. For the month of November’s game, we felt like it was a perfect opportunity to show honor to those who have risked their own lives for our everyday freedoms. In our opinion, we could never honor them enough. So with that being said, we hope you enjoy this trail this month by visiting these extraordinary community businesses and paying tribute to just a few of our veterans. Please find the picture of each veteran on this page at each business. Have the person at the register sign off on the line below the description. Once fully completed, leave the game sheet with the last business for a chance of one of the five gift baskets and to be entered into a drawing for a $100, just in time for a little extra holiday spending! This business has chosen to honor Marvin D. Blackwell. He served in the United States Army from 1988 to 1992 and third armored division, 3rd Battalion 67th armored Regiment “Bandits”. In Germany, he also served in Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm as M1A1 TANK Crew member. He received ARCOM with Valor, an Army Achievement Medal and many other medals plus a presidential citation.
This business honors Sergeant John Doyle, her stepfather. He served in WWII and Korea. When his younger friend, who had a child, was drafted into Korea, he went to the draft board and went in his place! A true friend and hero!
This business reached out to a veteran from the community for more information but he preferred to remain anonymous. This act encouraged this business owner to honor all those unknown veterans, those who have served our country but have no name. They have provided us with freedoms but have received no accolades in return, some by choice, some not. We honor you!
This business wanted to honor and recognize all the other veterans with a name, one’s whose name graces the Memorial walls around our country, one’s that are still living and we have the opportunity to personally thank. To ALL who have served, thank you!
This business honors Veteran Darrell Moore, retired Major General of the USMC. Years of Service: 35 years. He is a great man in our community and our customer!
This business honors this veteran, Dave Hausmann, United States Army, who was a second dad to her. She grew up spending a great deal of her childhood in his family’s home. To specifically quote her, “He is just a really good guy”!
Clarence H. Pippen, a long time resident of Skiatook, OK was born in Hamlin, TX on January 10, 1924. He was drafted to the Army in March of 1943 where he served in the Signal Core Division. He was stationed in Seattle, Washington where they flew out on missions over Canada and Alaska since the Aleutian Islands were seized by the Japanese. Later, after they were taken back, he served as a Sergeant (T-5) on the Aleutian Islands. That was around 1947. here seems to be a misconception about honey glazed hams. HoneyBaked Ham® is the only company that creates and sells HoneyBaked Hams. Period. Harry J. Hoenselaar invented the spiral ham slicer in 1938, got a patent on it and tried to sell it in the ‘40s. Much to his chagrin, he could not generate interest in his invention. It’s said that people simply laughed and said, “Next time you’re going to be trying to sell us bottled water! “Disappointed, but not discouraged, Harry founded The HoneyBaked Ham Company in 1957. Today it is a premium food retailer with more than 400 stores nationwide and is currently in its third generation of values-driven, family ownership. HoneyBaked Ham Co. and Cafe in Tulsa celebrated their opening in 2003 and Lee Griffin became the Owner/ Operator in 2010. The Tulsa store serves families, businesses
and organizations throughout the Tulsa Metro. Lee says, “Our mission is to celebrate life one meal at a time. “The Company’s hams, turkeys and other specialty products are favorites across the country as superior holiday and special occasion choices and our customers choose from packaged product offerings or make their own selections for custom packages for family, friends and business associates.” Lee says HoneyBaked’s 2014 Brand Health Tracker showed that Honey Baked remains the most preferred ham brand and ranks highest for perceived quality among other ham brands. “We work hard to promote and maintain an environmentallyfriendly model throughout the supply chain and wherever we do business,” he adds. HoneyBaked Hams has three facilities in the US that buy hogs from approved farmers in the Midwestern United States. These three facilities
make Honey Baked Hams and that’s all they do, adding quality and consistency to every product produced. Each Ham is hand-selected for leanness from premium grain-fed stock and each undergoes a 16-point inspection checklist. On average, for every ten hams inspected, only one is selected. “Our hams are slow-cooked for 20-24 hours—two to three times longer than our competitors’ hams— using a unique blend of hardwood chips. They are then spiral-sliced to the bone so each tender, juicy slice is easy to serve. Honey Baked Hams are cured without adding extra water or juices,” says Lee. “A ham typically loses 10% in liquids during the cooking process and that’s all we add back into our hams before cooking to ensure that each cure is evenly distributed throughout our hams. We’ve found that most producers add up to 30% more liquid weight prior to cooking making their hams actually weigh more

after cooking than they did before. Once sliced, each ham is individually hand-glazed within 24 hours by an expert master glazer who slowly adds layers of spices and pure cane sugar with a masterful touch. This creates the HoneyBaked signature of a sweet, crunchy glaze. Following glazing, each ham undergoes another 16-point inspection prior to approval for sale. A ham expert wraps each ham in the signature gold foil. “And Honey Baked Hams are never frozen,” adds Lee. The company is committed to procuring ham and turkey products using animals raised in North America and they insist on their proper handling and humane treatment. “HoneyBaked Ham products contain no added hormones and steroids. Ingredients are printed on each product’s label and hams are always available. Each ham or turkey product is unwrapped and shown to the customer prior to purchase and systems are in place to get you in and out in 15 minutes or less…even during the holidays. Quality assurance personnel are always onsite at the company’s processing plants. These plants and all retail stores also have frequent surprise audits and

New Model Excitement BY LORRIE WARD
H
enry Ford once said, “Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, this time more intelligently.” Ford Motor Company recently announced a development that may just make the words of their founder ring true once again. Over the next year, they will be revealing two closed out models: the Ford Ranger and the Ford Bronco. Steve Kissee, second generation owner of Jack Kissee Ford in Claremore, has seen many trends come and go during the over four decades he’s been with the dealership, and he has rarely seen such anticipation from customers about any brand-new product, much less about the revival of a couple of classics. “People are really excited,” he says. “They’ve been calling the dealership and asking when we expect the new Rangers and Broncos.” Kissee has two different answers to that question. He notes that the Ranger is scheduled to appear first (within the next few weeks) and will be a part of the 2019 model lineup. The Ranger will return with a fresh, sporty look and more cab room, torque, and towing capacity. Kissee expects the Ranger to be more popular in its new life than in its previous one. The Ranger was discontinued in 2011 as another long term victim of the economic crisis of 2008—which is ironic since one of the draws of this smaller pickup is that it is an economical alternative to a larger truck. “A lot of people don’t feel they need a big truck like an F150 to just haul stuff around their house,” Kissee points out, “so I think people will like the Ranger’s size and fuel economy.” The return of the Ford Bronco is creating an even bigger buzz than that of the Ranger. Even though the new Bronco won’t be available until the 2020 models arrive, Steve Kissee reports that Jack Kissee Ford is already receiving inquiries from excited customers. This is no surprise to Kissee, who remembers how popular the Bronco was
Builds
throughout the thirty years (1966-1996) it was on the market. Ford’s reasons for stopping production over two decades ago have been much debated, but the Bronco has never been forgotten, and Kissee notes that “there are people who pay big money out there to get an old Bronco and fix it up.” The latest photos released show a powerful off-road style vehicle with a retro feel. Unlike the new Ford Ranger, which looks quite different from its predecessor, the Bronco is expected to bring a classic style that houses the latest technology. The revival of the Bronco and the Ranger isn’t the only change to look for from Ford Motor Company. Kissee notes that the entire Ford lineup will be changing over the next two years. They will be retiring a few of their sedan models, including the Taurus and the Fiesta. These changes are all part of Ford’s move toward concentration on trucks and SUVs. They will of course continue with F150’s and SuperDuty trucks— which Kissee points out have been the best-selling trucks 43 years in a row—other popular SUV models like the Escape and the Explorer. Kissee anticipates that Ford will increase concentration on the EcoSport and other small SUVs. And of course, Ford will continue its production of the ever popular Mustang, a sports car that will ever hold a nostalgic place of honor with Steve Kissee. He started out with a Ford Mustang in the mid 1970’s, when his dad Jack found an old ’67 Mustang and fixed it up for Steve on the Jack Kissee Ford car lot. And even though Steve walks by a brand new Shelby Mustang GT in the showroom every day on his way into his office, he never forgets those days or the wheels that got him on the road in the first place.

Time to Think About
Year-End Investment Moves THIS ARTICLE WAS WRITTEN BY EDWARD JONES FOR USE BY YOUR LOCAL EDWARD JONES FINANCIAL ADVISOR.
W
e’ve still got a couple of months left in 2018, but it’s not too soon to start thinking about some year-end investment moves that might benefit you. Here are a few possibilities (although not all will apply to your situation): Add to your IRA. For the 2018 tax year, you can put up to $5,500 into your traditional or Roth IRA (assuming you are eligible), or $6,500 if you’re 50 or older. If you haven’t reached this limit, consider adding some money. You have until April 15, 2019, to contribute to your IRA for 2018, but why wait until the last minute? Increase your 401(k) contributions. You already may be investing in your 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored retirement plan, but you might be able to bump up your contributions for the rest of the year, if it’s allowed. Of course, you should always put in enough to earn your employer’s matching contribution, if one is offered. Take your RMDs. If you are 70½ or older, you must start taking withdrawals – called required minimum distributions, or RMDs – from your traditional IRA and your 401(k) or similar retirement plan. Generally, you must take these RMDs by December 31 every year. But if you turned 70½ in 2018, you can wait until April 1, 2019, until you take your first RMD. However, you will then have to take a second RMD (the one for age 71) by December 31, 2019. Taking two RMDs in one year could give you an unexpectedly large taxable income for the year, possibly bumping you into a higher tax bracket and affecting the amount of your Social Security benefits subject to taxes. So, if you are

considering delaying your first RMD, consult with your tax advisor. Make changes in response to life events. In 2018, did you experience a major life event, such as a marriage, divorce or addition of a child? Or did you change jobs or retire? Any of these events could lead you to adjust your investment plans, so now may be the time to do so, possibly with the help of a financial professional. Review your investment mix. At least once a year, it’s a good idea to review your investment mix to ensure it’s still suitable for your goals and risk tolerance. Sometimes, even without your taking any action, your portfolio might change in ways you hadn’t expected. For example, suppose you wanted your portfolio to contain 60% stocks and 40% bonds and other investments. After a period of rising prices, though, the value of your stocks may have increased so much that they now occupy 65% of your portfolio – which means you may be taking on more risk than you had originally intended. Consequently, you may need to rebalance your portfolio to get back to your original 60% to 40% ratios. (Keep in mind that these figures are just for illustration; everyone’s ideal portfolio mix will depend on their individual situations.) These aren’t the only year-end moves you may want to consider, but they can help you close out 2018 on a positive note. Plus, they can serve as a reminder that you need to be vigilant as you keep working toward your financial goals.
