ill Rogers was the Number 1 movie star in America in 1934, and last year marked the 100th anniversary of his first silent movie, “Laughing Bill Hyde.” This year, the first Will Rogers Motion Picture Festival will be coming to Claremore, October 30-November 2. “I think this event is a perfect fit to remember Will’s career and create opportunities for others to experience their dreams. Will was always known as a friend to everyone and this festival will be a family friendly event everyone can attend,” he said. Claremore-based actress,

Lea McCormick has also been part of the event planning process. “We have been researching film festivals around the country, and we want to make this festival unique and exciting for the participants and the entire community,” said McCormick. “We think this can provide another opportunity for movie directors to display their creative works.” The Festival accepted movies in the following categories: College Shorts, Made in Oklahoma, American Indian/First Nation/ Indigenous, Documentary, Narrative, Comedy and Children’s. The Children’s category will have a 14 and under and 15-18 category. There will be lots of activities throughout the Festival including a Kick Off event, lectures, after parties, lots of movies to watch at different venues around Claremore and the Dog Irons Award Ceremony on November 2nd at the Will Rogers Auditorium on the Rogers State University campus. Some of the special lecture guests include Barry Corbin - who has (continued on next page)

t’s been 100 years since Will Rogers filmed “Laughing Bill Hyde,” his first of 50 silent movies. While films were somewhat of a novelty then, today’s movie fans have an opportunity during the Will Rogers Motion Picture Festival to view four days of original films from all around the world. Films submitted in the Will Rogers Motion Picture Festival will be showing each day in Claremore from October 30 - November 2. First place winners will receive the classic Dog Iron Award (pictured left), which will be presented in 12 categories at a special Dog Irons Awards Ceremony on the night of November 2. Motion picture buffs have an opportunity to win an “All Access

Pass,” valued at $100 to see all of the entries throughout the Festival and attend the Kick-Off party, Awards Ceremony, lectures and the V.I.P. reception. Framed copies of Will Rogers’ movie posters are displayed in more than 50 Claremore locations. To enter in the contest for the free “All Access Pass,” take a selfie with one of the Will Rogers vintage movie posters and post it on Facebook with the hashtag, #reelwill. A winner will be picked each Wednesday during the month of October and will be posted on the Will Rogers Motion Picture Festival Facebook page. The more selfies with movie posters you find, the more chances you have to win. Will Rogers went on to make 21 talkies, the last two, “In Old Kentucky” and “Steamboat ‘Round the Bend,” released after his August 15, 1935 death in an Alaska plane crash. Blending Into Fall BY SHANNON SMITH

W

e are nearing that time of year when soup is the perfect medicine for the soul. The weather is cool and crisp, so what better thing to make for dinner than a hearty soup? There are many options and varieties of soups, but one of the

12 |

easiest is what I call Blender Soup. To the bowl of a blender, you just add cooked vegetables, broth, some aromatics, and blend until smooth. I like to dress it up with fresh herbs or nuts, but it’s really important to choose fresh vegetables. My favorite way to cook vegetables is by bathing them in olive oil, salt, and pepper, and roasting them in a hot oven for 30-40 minutes. Cook them long enough to get a little color, which just adds more flavor. This is where you can get creative, and make your own custom “blends”. My personal favorite is roasted

VALUES ROGERS COUNTY OCTOBER 2019 WWW.VALUENEWS.COM

butternut squash soup with an apple added to the blender for a touch of sweetness. Roasted carrots, cauliflower, broccoli, asparagus, tomatoes and potatoes are great choices for taking the role of leading actor in blender soups. Place the cooked veggies in the blender and add your choice of liquid, whether it’s chicken broth, vegetable broth, coconut milk, or a combination. Then you should add some aromatics, such as onions, garlic, ginger, lemongrass, fennel, peppers, and chile powder. If your fresh herbs are fading in the cooler weather, you can add smaller amounts of dried herbs like sage, oregano, thyme, or basil.

Blend the ingredients until they’re smooth, adding more liquid if necessary. Pour into a saucepan and heat on the stove, seasoning with salt and pepper to taste. Ladle into bowls and garnish with herbs, chopped vegetables, cream, or chiles. The options are endless, and you can come up with your own recipes depending on what you have on hand, or enjoy the most. Here are my two favorite blender soup recipes using butternut squash and roasted tomatoes. Find more soup recipes on my website, www.beadsandbasil.com.

Fire Roasted Tomato Soup • • • • • • • • • •

2 tbsp. olive oil 1 cup chopped onion 3 cloves garlic, minced 2 cups chicken or vegetable broth 2 (14 ounce) cans fired roasted diced tomatoes 1 tsp. balsamic vinegar 1 tsp. fresh basil, torn (or 1/2 tsp. dried basil) 1/4 tsp. red pepper flakes 1/2 cup heavy cream Salt

Put onion mixture into the bowl of a blender. Add broth, tomatoes, basil, balsamic vinegar and red pepper flakes. Blend until smooth, then pour mixture into a saucepan. Bring the mixture to a boil, reduce heat to medium-low and cover with lid. Simmer for 10 minutes, then add the cream and salt, to taste. Turn off heat and serve. Garnish with pine nuts and fresh basil. Note: If tomatoes are in season, you can slice them in half, drizzle with olive oil, salt, and pepper and place on a foil-lined baking sheet. Roast in 375 degree oven for 40-50 minutes, until blistered and soft. Remove skins, if desired.

Heat olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add onion and garlic, and cook until fragrant, 2 to 3 minutes.

Roasted Butternut

Squash Soup Serves 4-6 • • • • • • • •

1 large butternut squash 1 apple, peeled 1 yellow onion, peeled 2 tablespoons olive oil Salt and pepper 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated 3 cups chicken or vegetable broth 2 leaves of fresh sage (or 1/2 teaspoon dried sage)

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Cut the butternut squash in half lengthwise and scoop out seeds and stringy bits with a spoon. Cut apple in half, and remove stem and core. Cut off onion root and stem, and cut in half. On a foil-lined baking pan, place the butternut squash, apple, and onion halves. Drizzle with olive oil, and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Roast for 30 minutes.

Remove apple and onion from the pan and set aside. Continue roasting butternut squash for another 30 minutes, until tender. Allow to cool a few minutes. Using a spoon, scoop out the squash and put into the bowl of a blender. Add the roasted apple and onion, ginger, broth, and sage leaves. Blend until smooth. Pour mixture into a saucepan and bring to a boil, adding

more broth if too thick. Reduce heat and allow to simmer for 10 minutes. Taste to see if more salt and pepper are needed, then serve in bowls. Garnish with toasted pepitas and a sprinkle of paprika, if desired. Note: You can add coconut milk in place of half the broth, if desired.

Claremore Businessman Dedicated to

Bringing Wellness

BY TOM FINK

f the walls of one Claremore business could talk, they would tell the stories of customers who have found relief from a miscellany of aches and pains through the use of hemp oil products. While the walls themselves may not talk, the customers do, and many have shared their personal success stories through CBD (cannabidiol) oil on the very walls of the Claremorebased CBD products business: “CBD has helped with my evening aches and pains. I think everyone needs to give CBD a shot. There are so many benefits,” wrote Nathan. “First time to try this, and it’s amazing! Immediate relieve! I recommend this to everyone dealing with chronic pain,” wrote Kellie, and from Erica, “The staff is highly knowledgeable

and kind. I definitely recommend this location and their products. They have helped me with my chronic pain tremendously.” From behind the counter, Jonathan Dietrich simply smiles. For nearly two years, Dietrich has been offering his customers relief from an assortment of physical and emotional maladies at his northeastern Oklahoma CBD product business, CBD American Shaman Claremore. Although many customers were initially skeptical, Dietrich said that over time, a greater understanding of CBD oil has “demystified” the stigma that was formerly attached to it. “When we first started, there were a lot of people skeptical – kind of questioning the products …leery, even, thinking it was marijuana in some shape or form,” he said, “since the passage of HB 788 (Oklahoma’s medical marijuana measure), people aren’t nearly so anxious about it – the mystique surrounding it has been replaced with understanding and acceptance, as people have become educated about what it is. “People are a little more …I don’t know if I’d say comfortable, but certainly more familiar with it,” he said. Hemp oil products offered at Dietrich’s business contain high amounts of CBD and are all-naturalextracted organically with CO2. Although Dietrich noted a proliferation in recent years of CBD oil business, his customers regard American Shaman for its regulated and consistently high quality. “We’ve got through a bit of a roller coaster business-wise, because it seems like people can find CBD everywhere these days, but our business is associated with quality – a quality product, and that’s something you’re not going to get at the little stores here and there – gas stations, pharmacies or grocery stores – but our name, reputation, and quality products definitely speak for themselves.” To ensure quality, the U.S. Hemp Authority has created a high-quality seal for CBD products, as a measure to “standardize quality control and build a safer help industry from seed to shelf ” – such as those offered by Dietrich. “I think this will actually help, as a lot of people are wary of what to choose because of all the variety of products,” he said. “I tell them our products have all been third-party tested – I can show them the lab reports as to what’s in (the products), and they can see the quality that goes into the products.” CBD hemp oil products come in a variety of forms, including body lotions, capsules, concentrate, edibles – including gummies, topical cream, lip revitalizer and more – even dog treats. Here’s what our customers have to say about PermaSeal U.S.A. Preserve Your Investment We wanted to write you to express how satisfied we are with your product, service and the crew. We built our house 3 years ago including the cedar deck, as soon as we moved in we stained the deck and it looked great. Unfortunately, it only looked good for about 6 months and we knew we had to do something to protect our investment, we were not too excited about the prospect of having to stain our deck, at least once a year, to maintain it. Thank God for Permaseal, your team came out, cleaned the deck and permanently sealed the deck with the penetrating sealant. Now it looks just like the day we moved in and we do not have to stain it, unless we want

We are so happy to know we have protected our investment for at least 25 years and we have just scheduled your team to come out and permanently seal our drive way as well. We can highly recommend Permaseal to everyone that is looking for a permanent solution, peace of mind. The whole thing was a very pleasurable experience. From the initial visit, where you thoroughly explained the entire process, with no sales pressure. To the polite, punctual and professional crew that came and did the work. Thank you again for helping us preserve our investment.

n the complex world of health insurance, USHealth Advisors pride themselves on offering customers an exceptional buying experience. They are licensed and trusted agents who must meet specific product training and certification standards before being authorized to represent the company USHealth Group line of products. Becky Brown, field sales leader, and her team are licensed agents who represent USHealth Advisors within the Tulsa metropolitan area and throughout Oklahoma. Becky is licensed in 14 states and has offices in Tulsa and Texas. Being a people person, Becky loves helping people and takes her company’s motto “H.O.P.E.” to heart. H.O.P.E. stands for: Helping Other People Everyday. “Our commitment to personal attention has made USHEALTH Advisors a recognized world leader for business growth, innovation and customer care. Every day, we help more and more individuals, families and business owners fulfill their health coverage needs,” said Becky. When it comes to Specified Disease/Sickness and Accident coverage, she understands that every customer has different needs. “We believe in choice, and we believe our customers truly value the array of options we provide as Left: Becky Brown is the field sales leader for the Tulsa office - James Schmitt Division. 28 |

they choose the protection that is most appropriate for them. To that end, we have developed many kinds of coverage’s that promote customer choice,” explains Becky. “We are flexible, affordable and secure. Our full portfolio of plans lets you tailor coverage to YOUR needs, and you can rest easy knowing that, we are an innovator in the industry with over 50 collective years of health coverage experience.” For those customers who are either on a limited budget or are concerned about having to satisfy a high annual deductible before they receive any benefits from their health plans, the company offers some products which provide first-dollar benefits for covered services and substantial network discounts across a

broad spectrum of providers. These plans are typically more affordable than more comprehensive plans, while still providing the first dollar protection and assurances that a limited protection plan offers. For instance, “In the event you need additional protection, the purchase of PremierChoice Specified Disease/ Sickness Plan*, Accident* and the Optional Guaranteed Short Term Insurability Rider* provides you with a onetime right to purchase our PremierMed Short Term Medical-Surgical Expense Plan* without any additional medical underwriting,” Becky stated. “Our PremierChoice Specified Disease/ Sickness and Accident Plans* allow you to receive first dollar payments for expenses incurred up to a benefit maximum for covered health care services. And with the special doctor office visit “rollover”* feature in each Specified Disease/ Sickness and Accident Plan, if you don’t use your benefits, you don’t lose them.” No matter which type of health coverage you choose, they want to help their customers enhance their protection. They feature a full line of ancillary products, including Health and Wellness*, Critical Illness*, Specified Disease/ Sickness*, Accident*, Short Term Accident Disability Income*, Income Protector*, Term Life Insurance*, Dental and Vision Plans*. In a marketplace characterized by high customer turnover and

low customer loyalty, Becky emphasizes, “Our team differentiates ourselves from others by creating long-term relationships with our customers, and we consistently deliver on our promise of dependability, personal attention and customer care. Please don’t let others tell you what you need or pay for coverage that isn’t right for you. Tell me what you are looking for, and I will work to put together the right policy tailored specifically for you. As your future conditions change, we can add to your original plan.” *Optional plans are underwritten by Freedom Life Insurance Company of America. Exclusions and limitations apply. Gleamed of. “I love to show people how they can save money and still have beautiful wood finishes that almost look new,” he said. “Many people believe that all wood refinishing is messy and that remodelers always take longer. Gleam Guard is completely different.” Gleam Guard’s technique employs professional craftsmen to refinish cabinets with greater benefits compared to complete kitchen remodeling. Their process accomplishes refinished woodwork without much sanding and toxic fumes and can be done with a day or two, with minimal dust. Cabinets will not need to be emptied to complete the work, saving even more time. “All you need to do is open the door and let us in to work in your kitchen,” said Tracy. “In other words, no prep is needed, such as removing hardware, covering furniture or anything else – we take care of all of it.” The breakthrough technology they use restores lasting beauty to cabinets and other interior woodwork. The application bonds

to the original finish, enhancing the wood grain and giving it a fresh-oiled look, however, unlike oiled methods, the results will last for decades. “Sometimes people think I am going to make everything look shiny,” Tracy said, “but there are actually three sheens to choose from – satin, semi-gloss

This process works not only on traditional wood surfaces but on painted, glazed and pickled woods as well. Gleam Guard can be used on new or old cabinets, and keeping the new finish is as easy as wiping with a damp cloth. A bit of vinegar is all you need for stubborn spots. Project completion time is a top priority for Tracy and Gleam Guard craftsmen. Each project is worked on one a time, to ensure quality and reliability. Honesty and integrity are at the base of all of the work with Tracy and his crew of professionals. Their reputation proceeds them, with an earned A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau, as well as awards for

guarantee that includes one free touchup service within five years of project completion, as necessary. In-home demonstrations can be scheduled to see how peels, flakes, scratches and minor nicks can disappear. “We can bring your kitchen back to life, and you can have a fresh look in your kitchen sooner than you think,” Tracy said. T

he Indian Women’s Pocahontas Club is celebrating 120 years in existence and will be hosting their annual tribute to Will Rogers, Saturday at 10 a.m. Nov. 2, 2019. The Wreath Laying Ceremony by the Pocahontas Club will begin at the Will Rogers Memorial Museum in the Rotunda. The ceremony begins with the club members, dressed in their Cherokee tear dresses and shawls around the bronze statue of Will Rogers. After the Wreath Laying Ceremony, there will be a musical tribute in the Will Rogers Theatre honoring Will Rogers. We are honored to have Jana Jae, the first lady of country fiddle, performing the “Fiddle Tribute,” sponsored by the Oklahoma Arts Council and the National Endowment of the Arts. Jana’s one-of-a-kind style blends country fiddling, western swing, bluegrass, pop, and the classics and was inducted into the National Fiddler Hall of Fame in 2015. In addition, Becky Hobbs, Pocahontas Club member and piano-pounding honky-tonk songwriter for celebrities such as George Jones, Loretta Lynn, and many others will also entertain us. Becky is also co-writer of Alabama’s “Angels Among Us,” and in 2015, she was inducted into the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame. She also, co-produced, co-wrote, wrote and sang the signature song “Let There Be Peace” in the short film “Nanyehi,” which was inducted into the Oklahoma Movie Hall of Fame. We may even get an opportunity to view the short film while we are in the theater. Shortly, after the “Musical Tribute,” there will be a reception in the Rotunda. There will be a Haute Hat Contest, in remembrance of Will’s wife, Betty. Join in or cast your ballot. Betty Blake Rogers was famous for always wearing her Haute hat.

BY TED KING

T

he Oklahoma Constitutional Carry law goes into effect Nov. 1, and Danny Jones and Andy Shidell of Crusader Tactical in Broken Arrow want gun owners to be ready. Constitutional Carry, which passed the legislature earlier this year and signed by the governor, provides that gun owners do not need a permit or training to own and carry a gun in public. Here are some of the other provisions of Constitutional Carry: • a person must be at least a 21 year old citizen of the United States • must be a resident of Oklahoma • cannot be a felon • gun purchases must go through a federal background check. A gun owner may not: • take a gun onto the campus of a school or university (public or private) • take a gun into any government building, municipal, county, state, or federal and any other building where government officials conduct business

36 |

• take a gun into a bar • take a gun inside any building that posts a “no guns allowed” sign • be using a prescription drug while carrying a firearm On the subject of cannabis, now legal in Oklahoma for medical purposes, Danny Jones said the situation is confusing. Federal law does not allow the use of cannabis. Currently, Oklahoma does not allow cardholders for medical marijuana to purchase firearms. “If a customer with a medical marijuana card tries to purchase a gun and does not reveal on the form he must fill out that he is using cannabis products, he might still be able to pass the federal background check and purchase the gun, but still be in violation of the law.” Jones mentioned that some schools allow teachers to carry guns but only with the permission of a superintendent. One can take a gun to a state park but not inside any buildings in a state park. Travel outside of Oklahoma with a gun will require a permit. Oklahoma is a “shall issue state,” which means

VALUES ROGERS COUNTY OCTOBER 2019 WWW.VALUENEWS.COM

if a gun owner meets the state’s requirements, the gun owner will get a permit. Some other states are “may issue states,” meaning it is up to the discretion of an official in that state to allow a gun owner a permit. Thirty-two states recognize Oklahoma’s conceal carry permits. Oklahoma recognizes permits from all 50 states. Both Jones and Shidell recommend the website www.gunstocarry.com/oklahoma. They also recommend that all gun owners look into knowing the law as it pertains to the use of firearms. One site they mentioned is www.uslawshield.com. Before Constitutional Carry, a person had to take part in a firearm safety course in order to get a permit to purchase a handgun. Although training is not required under the Constitutional Carry law, both Jones and Shidell believe training is still a good idea for new gun owners. Crusader Tactical will offer a training course Saturday, Oct. 26. The course is $60. “It’s an eight-hour course. You have to be able to shoot 50 rounds to prove you can handle a firearm. It’s not a shooting class but a safety class,” Jones said. After Nov. 1, Crusader Tactical will still offer a safety class every three months. They also offer a ladies only class. Danny Jones and Andy Shidell have been friends since their days as students at Oklahoma University. They decided to open the gun shop after retiring from their professions, Andy Shidell from the U.S. Probation Office and Danny Jones from his sand and gravel business. “We don’t make big piles of money, but we meet nice folks and get to do something we enjoy,” said Jones. “We still don’t get to shoot together enough,” added Shidell. “We have the right to defend ourselves and our families whether it’s with a pistol, shotgun or AR 15. Guns are a tool,” Jones said. “Nothing more, nothing less,” Shidell added.

explained by general manager Rusty Magiera this way, “It’s a business of relationships, and our inventory speaks for itself.” United Ford, which is owned by the Penske Automotive Group, sells Ford parts directly to the public in all 50 states and internationally. United Ford receives about 1,800 orders for parts a day. The warehouse can handle up to 4,000 deliveries a day. Most parts come with a warranty of two years, and some parts have longer warranties. Magiera is proud of the fact that the average tenure of employees at United Ford is 23 years, and one employee has been with the company for 40 years. Rhonda Henley has been with the company for almost four years and

has worked in the auto parts industry for the past 29 years. She started in Grove as an auto parts delivery driver and worked her way up to become a parts manager. With her friendly personality, Rhonda brings a career of experience assisting customers with the parts they need. Rhonda says she plans to stay with United Ford for years to come. “We have parts as far back as 1980.” Special orders may take between one to three days. “We ship nationwide and overseas if needed,” Rhonda said. She said Omnicraft parts are another brand of replacement parts available to their customers. “Our employees are empowered to take care of the customer,” Magiera said.

Trust the Man in the Black Hat BY MACY GOODNIGHT

T

he iconic look of Black Hat Cleaning Services, Inc. has become synonymous with honesty, integrity and unsurpassed professionalism. When you see the hat, you know you’re getting the absolute best in chimney, air duct and dryer vent cleaning. In 1977, owner and founder, David Harris, Sr. started his chimney sweep business in a time when healthy living in the home was gaining traction. In 1983, he bought the first air duct cleaning truck in Oklahoma and began providing the best service in its class. By the following year, they incorporated dryer vent cleaning. Over the years, his company has evolved into a trusted name in the business. “It’s amazing in this industry to have this kind of longevity,” he said. “Everywhere I go, I wear my hat. I always wanted everyone to recognize my company with my top hat.” The services provided by Black Hat encompass comprehensive safety and overall health in the home. Chimney sweep services as well as dryer duct cleaning, are essential for fire prevention, and air duct cleaning is vital for the air quality inside the home, ensuring a healthy breathing environment. David offers

constructive advice with service to assist in cost savings for energy usage and can even result in less frequency in required cleaning service. “Air duct cleaning times depend on how often you change your filters, what kind of filter you’re using, and their placement,” he said. “If you’re using the right filters and keeping those fresh, you’ll actually have a less frequent need for professional cleaning service.” On average, air duct cleaning is standard once a year for those using less quality fiberglass filters. Fire burning chimneys are recommended to be cleaned depending on wood-burning capacity, with a standard recommendation of professional sweep every 3 to 4 ricks of wood burned. Gas burning fireplaces only need cleaned every 15 to 20 years. “If you’re not sure if your chimney needs cleaning, at least have it inspected,” David said. “If you’ve

never had it cleaned, clean it!” With cooler weather coming soon, fireplaces will likely see more use, but most people spend more time indoors as a result of colder temperatures. The air quality within the home should be clean, without dust and particles blowing around in the air that is breathed. Dryer duct cleaning is sometimes overlooked by homeowners but should be a top priority regarding fire safety. Many home fires are caused every year by the lint that gets trapped within the pipes and once ignited can quickly burn throughout a home. “Dryer lint is the best thing you can use to start a campfire,” said David. “It is highly flammable. You don’t want that trapped in your wall as a fire hazard.” David’s sound advice for homeowners is only a small part of the comprehensive service provided by Black Hat. Honesty

and integrity are at the forefront of his business practice and what his customers see when they see him in his top hat. “My customers know that they can trust me to be honest, and take care of them, give them peace of mind.” Over the years, just as David’s hat has gotten taller, the services have evolved to become more efficient, time-saving and thorough. “I was one of the first people in this business to clean a chimney from the bottom up, and it was a quicker, cleaner, and safer cleaning process then,” he said. Chimney cleaning can take up to 45 minutes. David loves his work and the people he serves. “This is my 42nd year in business, and many more years ahead.”

The newest gem of this season’s festival is the Halloween Train. Guests will board in the Harbor and enjoy the enchanting colors, characters and catchy music of the Castle. The track loops through the woodlands up to the Maypole and back. Everyone may ride, but it is at its best with the younger visitors of Castleton. Families will enjoy the array of activities which are sure to provide plenty of photo ops and fall fun within the realm of Halloween Land (8 & Under).
