mess, or emptying of your cabinets. By Sheryl Sowell
By Cheena Pazzo The Gordon family is working hard to raise awareness for their son, who is battling a rare genetic disorder called Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva (FOP), or “Stone Man Disease.” Zip was diagnosed with FOP in July of 2011 at age 4. Friends and family are auctioning a truck and holding a barbecue event and auction in his honor to raise money for FOP research. FOP is one of the rarest, most disabling genetic conditions known to medicine, affecting one in two million, with only 700 confirmed cases worldwide. It causes the bone to attack muscle, turning muscle into bone and potentially enclosing the patient in a second skeleton. (continued on page 28)
Anyone who is in the process of trying to sell their home knows it’s not a simple task, by any means. The first thing your realtor will tell you is that a house that looks polished and
sparkling will sell much faster and for a better price than a dingy, rough-looking home. At the same time, you don’t want to make the mistake of spending (continued on page 28)

When you see or hear the name, Waterstone Private Wealth Management, you might think it’s for the very wealthy. Co-owners Ken Grant and wife Melanie Hasty-Grant, want everyone to know that isn’t the case. Wealth is a relative term and the services offered at Waterstone are appropriate for anyone who wants to make the most of their investments. “Wealth isn’t something that just happens to you one day (unless you win the lottery). You have to have a plan and a strategy to get you there,” said Melanie. “We are the ones to help you do that.” Neither Ken nor Melanie was born with a silver spoon in
their mouth. Ken grew up in Mesquite, Texas, enjoyed sports, and played football at OSU. Today Ken spearheads investment analysis and strategic counsel for Waterstone Private Wealth Management and has more than 20 years of experience in business administration and investment management. He is a sought-after source for national television, radio, and news outlets. Recent appearances include CNBC’s PowerLunch, Fox Business Opening Bell, The Dow Jones Newswire, and The Wall Street Journal. Melanie grew up on a farm in Arkansas. She received a Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology from OSU and was
employed as a marriage and family counselor for 11 years. She attributes this experience for her down-to-earth, straight talking, tell-it-like-it-is style when she counsels clients today. Melanie handles the long-term, big-picture planning, client development, and financial planning side of the business. Melanie also writes a series of articles for Value News entitled, “Ask the Money Maven.” “I write my monthly articles based on what my clients are worried or concerned about,” she says. She wrote “When a Penny Saved is not a Penny Earned” when several seniors had come to her searching for (continued on page 28)

STRAIGHT-FORWARD, NO-NONSENSE TALK ABOUT YOUR MONEY
Does Money Buy Happiness? Sometimes. BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT
Look around! These days it’s not hard to find folks who “appear” to be living “in high cotton” who are really struggling to make their bills. What my dad used to call “Big Hat. No Cattle.” We call them Hundred Thousand Dollar Millionaires…..and they are a dime a dozen. You know exactly who I am talking about. These are your neighbors, and friends, and people you go to church with, who have become entangled by all the worldly things they “thought” would make them happy and all the debt to goes along with it. Many of them are one paycheck away from disaster. They have lots of things, lots of monthly payments, and nothing in savings or investments. This “I want everything…and I want it now” mentality abounds in all levels of society from our government spending down to our personal economies. One of the things I tell my clients is “You can have almost anything you want. You just can’t have everything.” Some people want everything now…and that’s where financial problems come in! In reality, a determined focus on what’s really important to you can get you almost anything, as long as you’re able to let go of extraneous things and activities in the process. Becoming financially mature starts with a shift in mindset. We have to begin thinking of money not as an end in itself, but as a tool that helps us get or do what we
almost feel the oxygen being sucked out of the room. It’s as if I have asked them to go on a 500 calorie a day diet. This is because folks associate these terms with feelings of self-denial, discipline, and conflict. What I am talking about here is more about embracing what you want out of life and letting other things fall away. Instead of engaging in a grueling battle to deny yourself, simply focus on what has long-term value for you. Saving money flows naturally from that. want. Don’t let the tail wag the dog! Becoming financially fit requires us to make values-based decisions on what is important to us, trim the fat, and stay focused. True wealth is an inner sense of abundance, not outward displays of bling-bling. If you value time with your family, then you should find time to be fully present and engaged with those you love. You should save and plan for a family vacation that will give you lasting memories. If you value being able to spend your golden years without fear of whether or not social security will be around, then save and plan those retirement years. If you value buying nice things then buy nice things and stop buying junk. Even if you are on a limited budget, save for what you truly want and value instead of throwing your money away …. just so you can have it now! When I talk with clients about things like money management, budgets, and saving, you can
Here are 3 simple steps: 1) Determine what you really value. 2) Set specific goals to accomplish. 3) Either earn more money for the things you value or spend less on the things you don’t. Remember, there are no armored trucks at a funeral procession. In other words INVEST in yourself, in your dreams, in your future, in a lifestyle that fulfills and enriches you and those you love, and you will not only be happier but you’ll be richer in so many ways. AAn Eye for Service Dr. Abby Overstreet of Advanced Vision Center emphasizes one-on-one, friendly customer service in addition to offering advanced technology. By Lorrie Ward Advanced technology has added some great benefits to our society, but in many cases it has also created a highly impersonal atmosphere. Cell phones, texting, email and various other technological advances have revved up the pace within our relationships, both business and personal. But somehow, even though we’ve become more connected to those around us, we sometimes feel more disconnected because we are rushed through important conversations, situations and decisions. Dr. Abby Overstreet of Advanced Vision Center & Eyewear Boutique opened her business in Claremore five years ago with the express purpose of combining the latest, most advanced technology in eye care – including an on-site lab and retinal photography – with oneon-one, personalized and friendly service. It is a delicate balancing act, but it is one she strives to perform perfectly. “I have a lot of technology – and I use it,” she notes. “But I take the time to explain things thoroughly and in regular terms.
People appreciate that.” Dr. Overstreet wants each patient’s positive experience to begin even before he or she enters the examining room. When patients enter the door, not only will they be greeted by Dr. Overstreet’s helpful and friendly staff, but their senses will be delighted both by the wide selection of frames on display and by the way in which the selection is presented. Dr. Overstreet has taken special care to make shopping for frames at Advanced Eye Care an experience as unique as Dr. Overstreet herself, who has personally hand-painted and decorated tables across a room filled with quality, name-brand eye wear including Oakley, Maui Jim, Revo, Nike, Rayban, Coach, Dior, Burberry and Harley. Dr. Overstreet’s travels introduce her to fun finds like Caviar eyewear, which she found in Las Vegas, or trendy jewelry items for the office boutique. Frames come in a wide range of price selections, from low-price package deals to higher end frames: “From basic to bling,” Dr. Overstreet says with a smile.
When a staff member, like Senior Insurance Advisor and Accounting Specialist Heather Williams, helps clients choose frames, she encourages them to consider their hobbies and needs. “If you golf or fish, you might need polarized lenses. But if you don’t do those things or need those type of lenses, we don’t push and cause you to spend needlessly,” says Heather. “Times are too hard to spend money on things we don’t need.” Dr. Abigail Overstreet was born and raised in Muskogee, attended Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, and obtained her undergraduate degree at Oklahoma State University. QQuit Hiding Those Toes A New Image Cosmetic Laser Center offers a highly successful laser treatment for nail fungus. By Dwight Korgan, MD While most people never experience the serious complications of toenail fungus, known as onychomycosis, it can nevertheless have major complications such as cellulitis (local bacterial infections), osteomyelitis (bone infections) and gangrene. Most people just complain of those ugly nails that only occasionally cause minor discomfort and sometimes don’t quite clear the couch or coffee table and end up being stripped off (avulsed). Frequently not even the best nail polish will do an adequate cover up. Many women don’t wear open toed shoes and just put up with the embarrassment. This is especially true when the fingernails are involved. There are several causes such as exposure in a wet environment and trauma to the nail. Many, however, appear to be genetically impaired with the apparent inability to fight the infection. (Think: “Did either of my parents have thick ugly toenails?”) Tens of millions of Americans are afflicted with this malady, with up to one in ten people having the problem. It
Dr. Dwight Korgan of A New Image Cosmetic Laser Center. tends to be much worse in the older population and in those who have diabetes. Unfortunately, except for occasional cases caused by trauma, it rarely resolves by itself. Infections may be divided into three types: distal subungal
onychomycosis (DSO) involving the end portion of the nail, proximal subungal onychomycosis (PSO) involving the area around the cuticle, and white superficial (WSO) occurring as a powdery substance on the surface. Deformities from psoriasis,
lichen planus and trauma may cause look alike nails. While most of the time diagnosis is made by clinical inspection, culture and biopsy may be necessary in difficult cases. One challenge is that even when present, cultures may fail to grow the causative agent and may take several weeks or months to grow. Treatment is difficult because the fungus is sequestered in the nail and between the nail and the nail bed where the body’s defenses have a difficult time penetrating. Up until recently treatment was divided into topical and systemic. Topical agents include over-the-counter remedies such as mentholatum, vinegar soaks, tea tree oil and various herbal preparations. Several antifungal creams are also available over the counter. Unfortunately this class has minimal benefit except maybe in the white superficial type. Prescription topical creams and lacquers are available with only slightly higher success rate and a lot more cost. Several systemic (oral) medications are available by prescription, but have the downside risk of irritating and even damaging the liver and require monitoring with lab tests. Until recently when generics became available, these were very expensive and even now many insurances are reluctant to cover them. The best of these, terbinfine is approximately 85 percent effective. There is a relatively new treatment available now using a
Page 7
YAG-1064 laser to momentarily heat the nail area and kill the fungus. Several treatments are required but last only about 15 minutes with minimal discomfort, and no risk of injury to the liver. Success rates approach 95 percent. Regardless of the treatment type, it takes six months to a year for a new non- infected nail to regrow (shorter time for fingernails and longer time for toenails). Unfortunately reinfection may occur, but in the case of the laser, a treatment every six months to one year may be all it takes to keep the fungus at bay and great looking nails. A New Image is proud to be able to offer this new treatment at an introductory rate. Initial consultation is free. There are some illnesses that would prevent using this treatment and a few screening questions will be asked before an appointment is made. So if you tired of hiding those nails, come in see our photo gallery of successes and give us a chance to show you what your nails could look like next summer.

SSizzlin’ September Entertainment The 33rd annual Bluegrass & Chili Festival takes place September 6-8, 2012 at the Claremore Expo Center grounds.
By Lorrie Ward Recently while on vacation, Rogers County native Myrtle Prather went into a store in Branson, Missouri to buy a pair of shoes for her granddaughter. At the register, the cashier asked Myrtle for her zip code, and when Myrtle said, “74017Claremore,” the cashier exclaimed, “Oh, that’s where we go every year to the Bluegrass & Chili Festival!” When Myrtle relayed this story to Dell Davis, president of the Claremore Chamber of Commerce, Dell was not surprised. “People all over the country identify Claremore with this festival,” she says, pointing out that some of the attendees starting coming as children with their
parents and now have grown up and are bringing their own children. “Some groups even make this their annual family reunion,” Dell says. “We do a survey of participants every year amongst the people who park on site and it is interesting to see where people come from – Arkansas, Missouri, Texas, Kansas, and even as far away as Colorado and Florida.” This year’s event, held September 6, 7, and 8, promises to be filled with fun as usual. One popular feature is the MidAmerica Regional Chili Cook-off and Salsa Competition, during which chili creators will vie to win a spot in the World Cookoff, where they could win the
$25,000 first prize. Festival attendees can purchase an official taster kit and judge for themselves whose chili deserves this top honor. The Bluegrass & Chili Festival also hosts plenty of other fun events for the whole family, including the Festival Market, Open Car Show, Kiddie Korral, dance exhibitions of country and clog dancing, an antique tractor pull, and much more. Admission to the festival is free, and onsite parking is $10 per carload. Festival hours are Thursday and Friday from 4 p.m. to 11p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., and each day promises exciting musical entertainment. The award-winning Dailey & Vincent and country superstar Marty Stuart & The Fabulous Superlatives will perform on Thursday. The CMA, IBMA and Grammy Award winning Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder will play on Friday evening, and Saturday’s lineup will include Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, followed by Rhonda Vincent & the Rage, and wrapped up by Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out. In addition, three stages around the festival will feature music from regional favorites like Heartland

on the music lineup or for applications and information on the competition and showcase, visit www.claremore.org. The Bluegrass & Chili Festival has been a Green Country event for 33 years, and the festival continues to grow since moving to Claremore from Tulsa in 2000. “We don’t even realize what we have until we go off and hear someone else talk about it,” says Dell, who tells of visiting Harrison, Arkansas and attending a Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver concert, who are regular performers at the Bluegrass & Chili Festival. As she and her husband sat waiting for the show to begin, a group of strangers nearby began talking about how they heard this group in Claremore and expressed high praise not only for the Bluegrass & Chili Festival, but for the town itself, bragging on Claremore’s entertainment, sites, antique stores and museums. The group had no idea who they were sitting next to, and Dell and her husband did not reveal themselves, but instead just sat and enjoyed hearing the admiration directed at their hometown. “My husband just sat next to me, nudging me and grinning,” Dell recalls with a grin of her own. “I wish I’d had a recorder!”

The Roaring ’20s Return
Rogers County Historical Society will host The Great Gatsby Gala on September 29 to benefit the Belvidere Mansion.
The excitement of a bygone era returns as the Roaring Twenties come roaring in again at the Will Rogers Memorial Museum on September 29 at 7 p.m., when the Rogers County Historical Society (RCHS) presents The Great Gatsby Gala. Whether you love to dance, dress in period costume, help preserve history, or all of the above, you won’t want to miss this event, with proceeds to benefit the Belvidere Mansion in Claremore. The event will feature live big band music from Jim Tanners Band and food samples from local restaurants. “Dancing is encouraged, as is costume,” says Peggy Feese, event chair. “But neither is required. We just want everyone to come and enjoy this gala event benefiting the Belvidere.” Members of the Rogers County Historical Society feel that the Will Rogers Memorial Museum is the perfect place to celebrate the 1920s, partly because the architecture is reminiscent of that period, and also because the man the

Affordable Family Fun
The Rogers County Fair, scheduled for September 13-16, is adding even more fun, affordable activities for the family to enjoy this year.
For the first time in decades, the Rogers County Fair, to be held September 13-16, will host an old-fashioned carnival midway by Fun Time Shows, featuring rides, games and carnival food, with armbands available nightly from 6 to 10 p.m. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, and on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, 1 to 5 p.m. As in years past, live music from local bands will be presented each evening. On Thursday at 7 p.m., The Sam Cox Band will be entertaining with self-described “Red Dirt
Country,” and Friday at 7 p.m., country singer Heath Wright and the Hangmen will take the stage. Locals Bethany Grace & Gypsy Soul will offer original music with a soft rock, bluesy-folk sound Saturday at 5:30 p.m. Saturday night will be the first time Rogers County Fair has been privileged to present The Texaco Country Showdown National Talent Competition – The Oklahoma Final. The Rogers County Fair will also host traditional favorites such as goat roping, pedal tractor pulls, and a barnyard area within an indoor arena. Those wishing to participate in these and other events will want to note that inside exhibits like canned goods, flower arrangements, and arts and crafts are due Wednesday, September 12. The premium sale featuring the top animals from the livestock shows will be held on Monday, September 17 at 7 p.m. The premium sale bids are donations made to the exhibitors from local businesses. Find Fabulous Crafts
The 4th annual Fall Craft Show at Eastern Hills Baptist Church is set for September 22 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
By Lorrie Ward
It is often hard to find crafters in this day and age as society relies more heavily on technology, but true artisans are still out there and many will find their way to Eastern Hills Baptist Church for the 4th annual Fall Craft Show on Saturday, September 22 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Eastern Hills is tucked into the hills east of Claremore, about a mile north of Cherokee Casino at Will Rogers Downs. The show will host 20 booths, half
filled by local artisans and the other half featuring commercial items like from Pampered Chef. “We strive to keep it unique though,” says Craft Show Chairperson Trista Hill. “So we only allow one representative for each commercial item.” According to Trista, it is not at all difficult to keep the handmade arts and crafts portion of the show unique. “True crafters don’t let anything go to waste,” she points
out, “so even if two crafters make the same type of item, it is very unlikely the styles will be the same because they have made things from their own scraps and scratch.” Craft Show shoppers are likely to find just about anything from homemade soap by Prairie Princess to local honey to handmade jewelry to crocheted and hand-sewn items. One year, an artisan brought handmade Native American jewelry and moccasins. “We have a man from Locust Grove who is a wood turner; he makes very intricate patterns on items like writing pens, vases, pull chains and more,” says Trista. “We also had a wood chipper one year.”

CCommunity Bank, Community Driven Grand Bank prides itself on providing old-fashioned customer service in addition to the latest technology. By Lorrie Ward With technology propelling business transactions to an increasingly frenetic pace, the phrase “hometown bank” may seem to be an antiquated one. Travis Wilson, president of Grand Bank in Claremore, values his hometown of Claremore and believes there is nothing outdated about good old-fashioned service. While Grand Bank employs the latest technology, such as Remote Check Capture and iPhone applications, it still keeps the philosophy of personal service, upheld by local employees. “In the past two years, we’ve experienced tremendous growth,” Wilson reports. “People are drawn during these economic times to a smaller bank where they can get to know everyone.” Part of keeping up with the growth and keeping it local is the recent hire of Jimmy Ray as vice president and loan officer. Like Wilson, who graduated from Claremore High School, Ray is a local – he graduated from Oologah High School. The two men worked together at the former 1st Bank of Claremore for ten years before Wilson made the move to Grand Bank two years

When the position of vice president and loan officer opened up this summer, the decision to hire Jimmy Ray was an easy one for Wilson – and the decision to take the position wasn’t at all difficult for Jimmy Ray. “Like Travis, I came from a
local bank and feel that it is important to make local decisions and help our community grow,” Ray relates. “We were both born and raised in this area, and we choose to continue living and working here, so we have a personal

investment in this community.” “That’s why we’re a little more passionate about these issues,” Wilson adds. “We want to see this area do well.” Grand Bank’s personal investment in the Rogers County community goes beyond just
banking. Both Wilson and Ray are board members of the Rogers County United Way, Ray is actively involved with Boy Scouts of America, and the bank sponsors local groups including Big Brothers/Big Sisters and Volunteers for Youth, as well as a host of other organizations and events. “To list everything our bank participates in would be hard,” says Wilson. “We try to participate in some form in as many things as we can – everything from donations to actually organizing an event.” These are just some of the reasons Jimmy Ray uses four words – “Community Bank, Community Driven” – to describe his new home at Grand Bank. “I’m excited about what this bank will do as we are able to serve our community with a real hometown atmosphere.”

HHelping Prevent Sports Eye Injuries Claremore Eye Associates encourages parents to become educated on preventing eye injuries in children who participate in sports. By Lorrie Ward Sight is one of our most utilized senses; yet it seems to be the one most taken for granted, and our eyes are often the last thing we think of protecting. That’s why Prevent Blindness America has designated September as Sports Eye Injury Prevention Awareness Month, and Dr. Lacy Crissup of Claremore Eye Associates encourages everyone, especially parents with children who are involved in sports, to become educated on how to protect against immediate eye injury and how to prevent long term damage as well. “According to a report by the American Optometric Association, the majority of sports-related eye injuries are preventable with protective eyewear,” says Dr. Crissup, who cites statistics from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission showing that over 70 percent of reported sportsrelated eye injuries happen to people under 25, and almost half occur in children under 15. Unfortunately, thousands of these injuries result in permanent loss of sight in the affected eye. Dr. Crissup suggests specific protective eyewear not only for
The staff at Claremore Eye Associates (L to R): (Standing) Kristin Kress, Becky Garoutte, Kim Marcotte, Betty Mitchell, (Seated) Dr. Steve Smith and Dr. Lacy Crissup. (Not pictured: Dr. James Stover.) those who don’t need prescription eyeglasses, but also for those who do. “Regular eye glasses are great for daily wear and tear,” she points out. “But they are not designed to protect in high-impact situations.” Since many sporting events and activities take place outside, protection against ultraviolet
light, commonly known as UV rays, is an important consideration when purchasing protective sports eyewear. Dr. Crissup notes, however, that UV protective eyewear is actually important for anyone who ever goes outside at all – especially children, as UV damage takes place over the long term. “Kids
tend to spend more time outside than adults, and their crystalline lens is clearer, allowing more UV radiation to pass to the back of the eye,” says Dr. Crissup. “This makes them more susceptible to long-term effects like cataracts, macular degeneration, and cancer in and around the eyes.” She suggests following the guidelines set forth by the AOA: wear sunglasses or contacts equipped with proper UV protection (blocking 99 to 100 percent of UV-A and UV-B rays), apply sunscreen around the eye area, and if possible, wear a hat for extra shade. The school year brings more than just the risk of sports injuries when it comes to the eyes, as more time will be spent in front of a computer screen. Many children – and many adults for that matter – suffer from a modern malady, Computer Vision Syndrome, or CVS. The AOA lists the most common symptoms of CVS as the following: eyestrain, headaches, blurred vision, dry eyes, and neck and shoulder pain. “A person might be suffering from uncorrected vision problems that surface
when they start working on the computer a lot, such as farsightedness, astigmatism, or focusing problems,” says Dr. Crissup. “Or it may just be a positioning issue: they might need to adjust their screens higher or lower so they can look at the computer screen straight on.” Dr. Crissup points out that some people who may not need glasses otherwise could need to use glasses specifically for the computer, to help with focus and to reduce eye strain. Dr. Lacy Crissup is committed to continually educating herself and others on the latest developments in eye care. She has been a part of the team at Claremore Eye Associates (formerly Claremore Primary Eye Care Associates), which also includes her father, Steve L. Smith, OD, as well as James C. Stover, OD, for three years. In that time, she has been privileged to see some very positive changes take place. Claremore Eye Associates is now a member of Vision Source and recently remodeled its waiting area and frame showroom and its interior offices and examining rooms. “We are the same doctors and people,” says Dr. Crissup. “We just have a new look and a new name.”

LLife Insurance Awareness Month David Merriman Insurance Agency - State Farm Insurance makes the topic of life insurance a priority during September as well as year-round.
By Lorrie Ward Life insurance. It may begin with the word “life,” but ironically life is usually not what one thinks of when he or she hears those words. That may be one of the reasons so many people avoid thinking of or talking about life insurance, as if avoiding thinking of the inevitable will make it go away. That’s why the LIFE Foundation has set aside September as Life Insurance
Awareness Month – and why David Merriman, State Farm agent and owner of David Merriman Agency in Claremore, makes sure that life insurance is a top priority topic all year-round. “In our office, we always ask about life insurance every time someone comes in, because we may be the only ones who ever do,” Merriman says. “I always knew life insurance would be a big part of my
agency from the very beginning—we talk about it every day in my office.” Merriman doesn’t just discuss whether a client needs life insurance, but also helps him or her figure out how much life insurance is needed. “I encourage them to use a needs-analysis form found on www.statefarm.com that guides them through a series of questions,” Merriman says. “And I try to educate people on

what they actually need.” He goes on to say that people often greatly underestimate what they need and are surprised when they look at questions and evaluate their situation realistically. For example, they must consider whether if they are the main wage earner, because then they are the biggest financial asset to the family. “What does a lifetime of earning mean to your family?” Merriman asks. He helps them look at interest rates, how much it would take to care for the family, and how much the surviving spouse would have to make to replace the lost income. When he speaks to clients about life insurance, Merriman finds that often they are not just uncomfortable with the subject because death is “out of sight, out of mind,” but also because they don’t feel like life insurance fits into their budget. But he points out that it is actually much more expensive in the long run to ignore life insurance, because of the burden left on the families of the deceased. “I have seen the devastation for families who never purchased any type of insurance,” he relates. “I’ve also delivered 20 death claim checks to families in my 13 years as an agent. The last
things people want to think about during this time are financial worries.” David Merriman doesn’t just discuss life insurance with others. He considers it to be of paramount importance in his own life. “I have four children and my wife is a full-time mother and homemaker,” he says. “If something happens to me, I want them to know how much I loved them because I planned for their future, making sure the essentials, like clothing, food, home and education were provided for.” In fact, Merriman believes that purchasing a sound life insurance policy is one of the most selfless acts one could perform for his or her loved ones. “People don’t buy life insurance for themselves, they buy it because they love somebody,” he says. “Just ask yourself: who do you love?” For more information, contact

DDouble the Surceé Surceé Home Décor & Gifts is doubling in size, just in time for the Fall Open House September 6-8.
By Shelly Robinson Ever wish you could have more of a good thing? Laura Sanders of Surceé Home Décor & Gifts has been wishing for more room in her Owasso store and this month, her wish is coming true. “The space to the south of us became available and provided the perfect opportunity for us to expand. We will be able to offer more of everything you love, with the same helpful Surceé girls who have been here from the start.” Surceé is known for its beautiful interior, with charming vignettes throughout the store to inspire the interior designer in you. Laura’s mother, Sue Hatfield, has an exceptional gift for decorating and like every year, the store will close for a few days prior to the Fall Open House so that she can work her magic, totally transforming the store and incorporating all the latest merchandise for Halloween and fall. “It’s like an early Christmas for us each time the delivery trucks pull in – we start pulling things out of boxes and getting so excited,” laughed staff member Cathy Haney. The additional space will double the size of the store and the timing couldn’t be better, as the Fall Open House is just
around the corner, September 68. This annual event kicks off on September 6 with a huge Grand Reopening party and Girls Night Out. The doors will open at 5 p.m. and the first 20 customers will receive a special gift bag full of Surceé goodies from throughout the store. Many of the Surceé vendors are contributing items for door prizes as well. Laura says this year’s Fall Open House will be bigger and better than ever, with refreshments including delicious samples of fall foods that are perfect for tailgating and get-togethers. “We just wanted to throw a big party and say thank you to our loyal customers for shopping locally and making this expansion possible.” The Fall Open House continues Friday and Saturday during regular store hours with more prize giveaways, discounts and representatives from some of Surceé’s most popular brands on hand to speak with customers. Laura said the larger display area will allow her to offer more lighting, more home décor and two new lines of custom furniture. “We are very excited about the custom furniture. One line can be finished in over 40
different color choices.” If you love the Surceé look, but aren’t sure how to make it work in your home, you’ll be glad to know there’s help available. Say you want to decorate a bookshelf or a mantel; just snap a picture and bring it in, and the ladies will help you choose pieces for a coordinated and personal look. If you need more help, in-home consultations are available as well. Looking for something to make your home smell like fall? The new fall scents are in from Tyler Candle Company, and if you’re looking to cook up some fun, you’ll love the wide selection of cookbooks, kitchen décor and fun serving pieces. Wind and Willow dips mixes and Wine-A-Rita drink mixes can make any night feel like a party, and add a real touch of class to tailgate parties. Speaking of fall and tailgating, be sure to check out the Game Day Boutique featuring all kinds of stylish Owasso, OSU and OU apparel and fan gear. Surceé has everything you need to support the team in style. As the exclusive Brighton dealer in the Owasso area, you will find a large selection of items including purses and
Owner Laura Sanders stocks everything you need to look great while you tailgate in the Surceé Game Day Boutique. perfume, wallets and watches, all kinds of jewelry and the ever popular charm bar to make gifts fun and personal. If your charm bracelet is filling up, consider Brighton’s line of charm rings and earrings as well. The jewelry is interchangeable so you can highlight a favorite charm or change things up to complement your clothing. Surceé offers registries for babies and brides, and if you’d like to drop the hint to someone special about all the fabulous things you love, you can fill out a wish list to keep on file. There are free gift bags and wrap, and
you can even call ahead and have something chosen from the list and ready to go when you arrive. What could be simpler? Surceé will be closed September 2-5 to prepare for the Grand Reopening and Fall Open House. For more information, contact

Families Save and Earn at JBF
The next Just Between Friends sales events will be held in Owasso, September 13-16 next to Reasor’s and in Broken Arrow/Bixby at the SpiritBank Event Center, October 11-13. By Sheryl Sowell The economy continues to be a big topic of conversation right now for people of all walks of life – everyone is trying to figure out how to pinch a few extra pennies and earn some extra cash. A perfect solution for many families is buying and consigning at Just Between Friends, the nation’s leading children’s and maternity consignment event. Just when the economy seems to be getting better, something else pops up, and it finds a way to contribute to inflation and the shrinkage of everyone’s take-home pay. This is taking its toll on many families’ budgets, especially when it comes to purchasing for back to school. As many parents know, buying clothes, shoes and other items needed for school can get expensive. Participating in JBF is a win-win financially for both consignors and shoppers. Consignors typically make 65 percent of sales from their merchandise, while those who consign and volunteer make
70 percent. Consignors also have the advantage of creating their own prices for items no longer being used around the house. With better returns than most consignment shops can offer and far less hassle than a garage sale, consignors are able to take all their items in one day and choose to pick up or donate items that don’t sell. According to Marcy Leffingwell, one of the new owners of Just Between Friends Broken Arrow/Bixby, the prices and selection for shoppers is unrivaled, and they can find an entire season’s worth of items in one stop without spending a ton of cash. “This helps families not only eat better, they live better because JBF helps put some expendable income back in the family budget because of the great savings that can be found at a JBF sales event,” Leffingwell said. Typically shoppers can save 50 to 90 percent off clothes and equipment, compared to retail prices. Items available include gently-used children’s, junior’s
and maternity clothing in addition to baby equipment, household furniture, software, videos, toys and much more. “Moms, dads and grandparents can get quality items for their children at amazingly low prices and still be able to buy the groceries for that month," Leffingwell said. Amber Post, franchisee of Southwest Tulsa and Owasso, was a JBF shopper before she started organizing her own JBF events. "We were young college students, broke and on a tight budget," Post said. She had a sixmonth-old daughter the first time she shopped at a JBF and even then, she was a slave to fashion. Before, Post had to rely on her mom and grandma to buy the really cute things. "I could only afford to buy her the basics and shop the clearance racks, but once I discovered JBF, it was like a dream come true," she said. Suddenly Post could buy everything she wanted for her and not jeopardize her family's budget. After shopping once, she decided to consign and received a check for $75 from items she

Families across the nation are realizing shopping resale/consignment makes sense. Just Between Friends has two area sales coming up. Owasso will occur September 13-16 next to Reasor’s, and JBF Broken Arrow/Bixby is taking place October 11-13 at the SpiritBank Event Center. sold, and she was hooked. It was so easy to do, and a sales event has so much to offer in terms of clothes, shoes, toys, books and more for the upcoming season. Daven Tackett, owner of Just Between Friends Tulsa and co-founder of JBF, is most pleased that the sale is a dignified way for a parent to buy children's clothes at great savings. Moms and dads can feel good about letting their children wear and play with the items purchased. "My mother was divorced and disabled, trying to raise three girls on a fixed income. She did many creative things to make ends meet, including buying some of our clothes from resale and going to garage sales," Tackett said. "As kids, we didn't know there was any other way to buy clothes. We were just always

TThis Ride’s a Real Dickens! Claremore Main Street presents the 6th annual Dickens of a Ride on October 6. By Duane Blankenship In the heat of summer, bicyclists in northeastern Oklahoma begin looking forward to cooler weather and the Dickens of a Ride bicycle tour through the beautiful rolling hillsides surrounding Claremore. The ride is sponsored by Claremore Main Street, Inc. and supports their many programs and projects throughout the year. Proceeds from the ride help fund preservation efforts, economic development, and special projects including planters, trees, benches and public art. Dickens of a Ride attracts cyclists from Oklahoma and adjoining states. Ride options include distances of 30, 50, 62 and 100 miles. And for those who like to do their bicycling in a more relaxed manner, there is a Lazy Lake Loop, which is less than ten miles. This is a good ride for beginning cyclists or for young families. Longer bike routes begin and end at Gazebo Park at Muskogee Avenue and Will Rogers Boulevard. Riders will head west out of Claremore through scenic country sides to Oologah. From there, they will cycle areas surrounding
Claremore Lake. Riders on the longer routes will continue pedaling east of town through challenging, rolling hillsides before they head back to Gazebo Park. At the conclusion of the bike ride, cyclists are invited to attend a reception at the Gazebo, where light refreshments will be served. There will also be lots of really nice door prizes awarded by drawings as participants return to the Gazebo for a little rest and recuperation. Ride coordinator Cindy Bissett says, “The Boomarang Diner is offering a great Breakfast Ride Special beginning at 6 a.m. the day of the ride.” It will include one egg, two pieces of bacon or sausage, toast or biscuit and gravy, and hash brown potatoes. Milk, coffee or juice is not included with the special, but may be purchased separately. There will also be nine well-supplied rest stops along the bike routes where riders look forward to sitting a spell and taking advantage of numerous home baked goodies and fruit. Excellent mechanical and SAG support will be provided on the Dickens of a Ride until
5 p.m. Be sure to wear your ANSI, CPSC, or Snell approved helmet if you plan on participating in the ride; it’s required. Visit the www.downtownclaremore.org to register online. Or if you prefer, you may print a registration form, fill it out, and mail it in with your check. Riders may purchase a long-sleeve Dickens of a Ride commemorative T-shirt for $18. You must order your T-shirt by September 4 to receive one. Janice Whittaker, co-owner of Bike-About Bicycles, says, “Registration packets may be picked up at Bike-About on Thursday, October 4 until 8 p.m. You may also get your packet beginning at 6 a.m. on the day of the ride.” Maps will be provided, and you need to be prepared for some hills. Riders under 16 years of age must be accompanied by an adult who is also on a bicycle and riding with them. Riders under 18 must have a parent or guardian sign a Ride Release. Major sponsors of the 2012 Dickens of a Ride include RCB Bank, CPCO Company, Walmart, BancFirst, Amazing Melton Sales, Urgent Care,

TThe Lucky Seven Local playwright Mark Ogle’s latest play tells the story of the lives of seven 1960 graduates of Neosho Falls High School. By Sheryl Sowell Local playwright Mark Ogle, who is known for his comic murder mysteries, is definitely changing it up a bit with his newest play “The Lucky Seven.” With the exception of a few comical moments, “The Lucky Seven” is a serious play. The setting is Neosho Falls High School in the small unassuming Midwestern town of Neosho Falls. There is nothing really special about either the school or town. What is special is the 1960 graduating class. This class holds many distinctions, including being the first class to graduate from the new high school building, as well as being the smallest graduating class ever, with just seven class members. They are known as “The Lucky Seven,” not simply because of their number, but for the reason for the number. This is the story of their lives. The play follows them from their graduation day through the next 50 years and the changes that occur in their lives. “Just when I think Mark has come up with all of the challenges there are to putting on a play, he writes this one that
has characters aging 50 years right before your eyes. But I like a challenge or I wouldn’t like working with him,” laughed Dan Huey, the play’s director. “We are lucky to have a director the caliber of Dan Huey living here in Claremore,” said Mark Ogle. “I am always amazed how he and the cast can take the words written on a piece of paper and make them come to life.” Audience members will recognize some of the actresses and actors that have appeared in past Huey/Ogle productions, as well as some first timers. “While there won’t be a crime to solve, there is a secret to try and figure out before it is revealed,” said Ogle. This is the fourth year that the First United Methodist Church of Claremore has held this event. “I can’t thank Pastor Ray Crawford and everyone associated with the First United Methodist Church of Claremore enough for their continued support of the American Red Cross,” said Ogle. “The American Red Cross is so fortunate to have community partners like the church. Not
only do they put on this event each year, but they are a designated American Red Cross shelter in case of a disaster.” The performance will be on Friday, September 28th, at the First United Methodist Church of Claremore. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the play begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are $25 (includes dinner and show). Reservations are required and can be made by calling the church at (918) 341-4580. All money raised from this event will go to the American Red Cross to help provide immediate emergency assistance (temporary lodging, food and clothing) needed by those who experience a disaster, like a home fire. For more information about the American Red Cross, please visit www.okredcross.org.

Playwright Mark Ogle finds it helps to get into character when writing a play, even if that means recreating part of Neosho Falls High School, the setting for this new play “The Lucky Seven.”

The annual campaign kicks off September 13-15 with the Bikes and Blues Kickoff, the Harold “Skeet” Smith Memorial Golf Outing, and Bikes and Blues Poker Run.
September 13-15 will be the Rogers County United Way Kickoff, featuring a three-tiered event: the Bikes and Blues Kickoff, the Harold “Skeet” Smith Memorial Golf Outing, and the Bikes and Blues Motorcycle Poker Run. Matt Streeter of RCB Bank and Delayna Trease of Summit Physical Therapy are this year’s codrive chairpersons and are heading up the Bikes and Blues Kickoff and Poker Run. The Bikes and Blues Kickoff at Ne-Mar Center will be held Thursday night, September 13, at 7:30 p.m. Motorcycle owners are invited to come and park their prized ride for attendees to admire as local award-winning blues band Sunday Moan entertains the mingling crowd. Various Ne-Mar businesses have created baskets to be raffled off during the evening, and Ne-Mar area restaurants have agreed to extend their hours to accommodate the event and to donate a portion of the proceeds to the United Way effort.

Most Ropers are retired, but some still work and schedule volunteer hours with their employers or take weekend duty. Ropers are required to join Friends of Will Rogers support group at least at the minimum level, volunteer at least two five-hour shifts per month, read and research the life and legacy of Will Rogers and the Museums’ collections and undergo a background check. If you are interested in volunteering, an application is available on the Museum website at www.willrogers.com (right hand side of page under “Ways to Support”). Applications are also available in the Museum business office and at the admissions desk or by calling the office, (918) 341-0719. For more information, contact

Fundraising Event for Claremore Boy with FOP ZipperQ will be held October 6, 2012 at The Nut House on historic Route 66 in Claremore to raise money to find a cure. All proceeds will go directly to the IFOPA and FOP research. At the event, Zip will draw the winning ticket for a 2012 Dodge 1500. The $25 tickets are available for purchase now on ZipperQ.com. In addition, teams can sign up online to participate in the barbecue competition. "We are honored to have support across the state for Zip's cause," said Amy Gordon, Zip's mother. "Thanks to the many generous donations, there will be something to suit everyone's interest, from art and music to sports and hunting." The live and silent auctions will include an original painting by famous Oklahoma artist Patrick Gordon, autographed memorabilia from Wayne Coyne – frontman for The Flaming Lips, tickets to the OU/Texas game, and a two-day duck and pheasant hunt by the nationally televised and professional guide Brady Walker.

"The disease is progressive, meaning it gets worse with time. We need a cure as quickly as possible to avoid additional long-term damage," Amy added. "Flare-ups can occur spontaneously or following bodily trauma, such as childhood immunizations, falls while playing and viral illnesses." According to the IFOPA, the information obtained from studying this disease will have far-reaching implications for the treatment of common disorders such as fractures, osteoporosis, hip replacement surgery, and other forms of heterotopic ossification that occur in trauma and burn victims. tons of money to remodel or replace important aesthetic and functional items like cabinetry. Bill Kleinhans, regional manager of Tulsa, says that Gleam Guard is a perfect solution for those trying to sell their home, as well as anyone else who simply wants to spruce up their interior in a big way – without spending a lot of money, time or effort. The Gleam Guard process refinishes kitchen and bath cabinets and any other interior woodwork without sanding, dust, or mess. “People cannot believe there is no preparation involved,” says Bill. “They don’t have to move a thing out of their cabinets.” Professional craftsmen will clean the cabinets, and the Gleam Guard process will correct peels, flakes, scratches, minor nicks and imperfections. Once the Gleam Guard hard finish is applied, like magic, the cabinets look like new. Gleam Guard eliminates the huge mess and time of remodeling – and most jobs take only one to two days to complete. “We refinish all interior woodwork, painted or stained, and the finish will last for decades,” says Bill. “If you walk into a kitchen that Gleam Guard did 24 years ago when owner Tracy Booth first began the company, you’d be absolutely amazed at how good it still looks.” Customers receive a five-year touchup warranty, which is
says Bill. The special Gleam Guard formula bonds to the original finish, enhances the wood grain and gives it a fresh oiled look that will never again need traditional polishing. All cleaning and finishing products used in the process are eco-friendly, and so is maintenance. Bill explains that for cleaning, dipping a cloth in warm water should do the job, but if more cleaning power is needed, add some white vinegar to the water. “If you’re doing a kitchen remodel, give us a call first. We can discuss the best time to schedule the refinishing part of the project,” Bill says. “And if anyone is thinking of replacing kitchen or bathroom cabinets, please give us a call first. Gleam Guard will be a less expensive alternative, with no dust or disruption.” Gleam Guard offers in-home price quotes, and their kiosk at Woodland Halls Mall displays samples of their amazing work.
Gleam Guard will make your old wood cabinets look like new. transferrable to new owners. “This is a great selling point for people who are putting their home on the market,” adds Bill. “When the cabinets in a home look pristine, the value and salability of the house really increases.” The reasonable cost is another great perk. According to Bill, the sandless refinishing process of Gleam Guard costs
about a third of traditional refinishing. Besides kitchen and bath cabinets, Gleam Guard can also be applied to doorframes, woodwork, paneling, baseboards and all wood trims that are painted, pickled or stained. Customers can choose a range of glosses, from a satin finish to high gloss. “We are infinitely adjustable on the type of gloss a customer wants,”

CCruise to Claremore The Route 66 Cruisers 5th annual Car and Motorcycle Show will be held September 28-29, 2012.
By Lorrie Ward
For the last century, Americans have had a love affair with the open road and a fascination with the vehicles that drive on it. In celebration of this fact, the Route 66 Cruisers are proud to present their 5th annual Car and Motorcycle Show, September 28-29 at the heart of Rogers County’s “Great American Highway” in Claremore. The party kicks off at noon on Friday at Claremore’s B&B Theater, which will be featuring the Faith Granger film “Deuce of Spades,” a film filled with hot rod
references and nostalgia. Meanwhile, Ne-Mar Center will strike up festivities with live music at 3 p.m., featuring local rockabilly band Kelli Lynn and the Skillet Lickers, followed by the cruise in at 6 p.m., where car and motorcycle show participants will cruise north on historic Route 66 to Totem Pole Park near Foyil and enjoy free hamburgers and hot dogs provided by Akdar Shrine. By the time cruisers make their way back to Ne-Mar Center at dusk, the atmosphere will be perfect for a

flame throwing competition. Brian Hodges of the Route 66 Cruisers describes the flame throwing competition as one of the highlights of the event for him. “In a flame throwing competition, the owner of the vehicle has set the vehicle up where flames come out of a tail pipe – something from the 1950s rarely seen now, only in movies like ‘American Graffiti,’” he says. “There aren’t many places where you can do this legally and have fun.” The Friday night cruise may go out in a blaze of glory, but the fire is by no means out for the Route 66 Cruisers Car and Motorcycle Show. Events pick up again at 7 a.m. the next morning at Claremore Lake, where automobiles and motorcycles will be on display, competing for $100 cash prizes to be awarded at 4 p.m. in categories like Best Ford, GM, Mopar, Rat Rod, Best Paint, and Best of Show, as well as a $50 award for Distance. Also awarded will be three trophies per class in over 50 classes. Throughout the day, a total of cash and prizes worth $1,000 will be given out. The Route 66 Cruisers Car and Motorcycle Show is designed
The flame throwing competition is a favorite for many at the Route 66 Cruisers Car and Motorcycle Show. to be a fun event for the whole family, with arts and crafts and food vendors on site and activities for the children, including a Jupiter Jump and visits with the Fire Department, who will have vehicles on site for the kids to look at, and the Rogers County Sheriff’s Office, whose representative will talk to the children about safety. Music for the day will be provided by Claremore’s own Bill Holden and the Night Hawks. Holden, who is famous for playing with Tony Orlando in Branson and who is renowned for his Bill Orbison imitations, will debut a song written especially in honor of the Rat Rods at the car show and will create a retro 50s and 60s atmosphere for those strolling around the lake. Claremore Lake is easy to find – from downtown Claremore, go north on Highway 66 (Lynn Riggs Boulevard) to Blue Starr Drive and then east for two miles. Dwayne Caldwell, president of the Route 66 Cruisers, reports that moving the event to Claremore Lake a couple of years ago and changing the date to September turned out to
be the best decisions the club ever made. “The feedback we’ve had tells us this is a great location, with the grass and trees and beautiful scenery around the lake,” says Caldwell. “And the weather is cooler this time of year as well.” Caldwell reports that attendance has grown dramatically since the location and date change, with visitors from places as far away as Arizona in attendance. “The word is getting out,” he says. “This has become more than just a small town car show.” But no matter how big the Route 66 Cruisers Car and Motorcycle Show gets, they haven’t forgotten the reasons for starting this event. As always, proceeds from the event go to the Shriner’s Transportation Fund, which finances the transportation of local children to Shriner’s Hospital. SSculpting a Reputation Marble Elegance has built a solid foundation for top-notch service in northeastern Oklahoma over the past 23 years.
By Lorrie Ward Solid as a rock – there’s a reason this old saying has become such a mainstay in our society. A reference to rock or stone implies permanence and solidity. If something is carved in stone, it’s here to stay. And of all types of stone, marble is arguably the most elegant. Whether it is pure white such as the type used for ancient sculptures like Michelangelo’s David or vibrant and colorful like the kind often seen today, marble can be used to create modern-day works of art used for practical purposes in today’s homes and businesses –
sinks, countertops, vanities, showers, tubs, and much more. Every day, Mike Self and the staff at Marble Elegance devote themselves to not only creating these practical works of art around northeastern Oklahoma, but to sculpting a great reputation for their business. “We’ve been in this area for 23 years,” says Mike Self. “We are like family.” Myrna McKinney has been with the Marble Elegance family since it was founded, and Mike counts her as a mainstay of the company. “In the beginning,
Myrna took orders, paid bills, scheduled calls,” says Mike. “She did it all!” Growth over the years necessitated the addition of several crew and staff members, and Mike is now happy to list Nickie Roberts as an integral part of the Marble Elegance team. “Nickie handles day-to-day schedules, manages all routes and orders, and keeps the website up to date,” Mike relates. “She’s the go-to girl and the first person people talk to when they call the office.” To Mike, having a rock-solid foundation of people like Myrna

AArt on the Hill
This year opening on September 28, previous Art on the Hill award winners and scholarship winners will show their art work in RSU’s Foundations Gallery in Baird Hall.
By Lorrie Ward It is a work of art all by itself. Rogers State University presides over the western end of Will

and Nickie is especially important because the company is growing rapidly and experiencing the changes that result from that growth. “We’ve established great relationships with many quality builders in the Claremore surrounding area. To name a few: Ron Griggs, Oklahoma Royal Homes, Redwood Construction, Quality Homes, C E Moody, Money Homes, Strategic Homes, Russell Judd, Denham Homes, Anglen Custom Homes, Epic Homes, Butler Homes, Green River Homes, Rod Henry, Ford Homes, Roland Homes, Scott Nymen, Brett Fleak, Tony Long, Leon Callison, and Ryan Kelly, and we’ve expanded even beyond that.” Marble Elegance received acclaim in recent years by building the new showers at ORU, and doing work at Vance Air Force Base in Enid and McAlester Ammunition facilities. “Over the past three years, we’ve reinvented ourselves,” explains Mike. “We are blessed to have formed relationships with two other companies, including CherryBerry Corporate, where we install bar tops and yogurt inserts for CherryBerry stores all over the
day. This place goes beyond being aesthetically pleasing, however. Within the walls of this university, artistic minds have been, and continue to be, enriched and inspired to higher levels of learning and creativity. That makes Rogers State University the perfect spot for RSU’s Art on the Hill Invitational Art Festival on September 28 from noon to 6 p.m. and September 29 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Gary Moeller, department head and professor at the department of fine arts at Rogers State University, has been involved with Art on the Hill since its beginning in 2010, when the First Lady of RSU, Peggy Rice, conceived the idea. “Peggy thought it would be a great idea to involve the community with an open festival for visual arts and other types of artistic endeavors,” he recalls. “I’ve been more than happy to help as this festival has grown and evolved.” This year, Rebecca Bacchetti, painter, teacher and on-site coordinator for RSU’s Italian Studies at Large, along with her husband Matteo, jazz musician and chef, will also help coordinate the activities. The word “festival” aptly describes this event, which will host all types of art, pleasing to both the eye and ear, created by student, amateur, and professional artists, with prizes awarded to winning entries. Large tents will be set up for booths displaying different forms of visual art – drawings,
U.S.” They have also displayed their versatility in the last year by building trophy bases for a large corporation in Oklahoma City, a company known as the largest manufacturer of trophies in the United States, providing trophies for NCAA and Heisman. Marble Elegance specializes not only in cultured marble creations, but offers products from Burlstone (trophies), Arizona Stone, and TruStone. Nickie reports that TruStone is especially popular right now because it is an engineered stone with a granite image photo-fused into the stone. “Granite is all the rage right now, but it is costly and often requires a lot of upkeep,” says Nickie. “TruStone is non-porous, so it offers the granite look without the granite cost and maintenance.” Mike Self counts himself as being blessed to have had such positive experiences through bad economic times, and he gives credit to the Lord for providing him with a great staff and continued success. He ends with, “It is our faith that has sustained us through the bad and good economic times.” For more information on Marble Elegance, call (918) 3411144 or visit the website at www.marbleeleganceinc.net.

photography, paintings – as well as for traditional arts and crafts such as woodturning and jewelry making. This year opening on September 28, previous Art on the Hill award winners and scholarship winners will show their art work in RSU’s Foundations Gallery in Baird Hall. This festival is designed to be enjoyed as a mostly outdoor event, with musicians, theatre actors and student groups performing in amphitheaters across the campus grounds. “We formerly held the festival in spring, but moved it to fall because our weather is so much more predictable this time of year, as spring brings a lot of rain and wind problems,” Gary notes. “We also no longer have to compete with Capstone and graduation activities – we think this will work much better for everyone.” Food vendors will also be available across campus, and the Student Art Association will once again host a children’s tent, where kids can express their own creativity and learn about art.
