Guests stroll along the street in downtown Claremore visiting various businesses, tasting samples from local restaurants, enjoying live entertainment and gazing at the children’s flag art at last year during Sip, Savor & Shop: Taste of Claremore.
In Good Taste

T
hey say every city has its own energy, a collective vibe made up of blending things like history, culture, architecture, music and food. Claremore Main Street and Claremore Chamber of Commerce invite local residents to Sip, Savor & Shop: Taste of Claremore. While you can’t actually taste this unique city recipe, you can introduce your palette to all the little ingredients that make up the historic Oklahoma city. In 2016, more than 20 local restaurants and wineries set up inside various downtown stores and businesses, showcasing samples to the hundreds of people sipping, savoring and shopping. The event returns on April 29 for a night full of tasting, shopping and strolling. “We have great support from local restaurants around the community as well as from our downtown businesses that host,” said Jessica Jackson, Main Street director. “It’s one of our favorite events each year.” The three-hour, self-guided food experience begins at 6 p.m. and spans the three blocks of downtown along Will Rogers Boulevard. Tickets are $12 in advance or $15 on the day-of while children five years and younger who are eating off an adult’s plate are free. Tickets will go on sale in the participating downtown stores in early April. In addition to the food and shopping, the evening will feature a variety of sidewalk entertainment by 14 |

talented local musicians. New this year, the event will also include a silent auction – offering attendees another opportunity to go home with goodies. The auction will be held in the Main Street/Chamber office, 419 W. Will Rogers Blvd. “We’re excited to add the silent auction to our already great event,” said Dell Davis, Claremore Chamber of Commerce president and CEO. “It’s just a little touch that makes Taste of Claremore even more special without taking away from the point of the event – tasting and shopping!” Additionally, guests will get to vote on their favorite flag featuring train safety created by fourth-graders in Claremore. The flag art is made possible by Union Pacific Railroad. “The flag art gives local elementary school students an opportunity to learn about Claremore history and train safety,” Davis said. Sip, Savor & Shop: Taste of Claremore is hosted by Claremore Main Street and the Claremore Area Chamber of Commerce, both of which are non-profit organizations in town. Proceeds of the event go to support the organization’s individual missions. For more information, including a list of restaurants, musicians and participating stores as the event draws closer, visit downtownclaremore.org or call Claremore Main Street at 918-341-5881.

ou’ve heard that old adage ‘the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence’? In the case of The District on Main, it is actually true. The boutique recently moved across Main Street to their newly renovated digs in the historic downtown district of Claremore, Oklahoma and the results are stunning. Owner Cari Bohanan designed the space for hip juniors and stylish ladies looking for the latest in fashion, but left a piece of history in the store. “When I bought the store, we uncovered a lot of interesting things in this building,” said Bohanan. “But, I wanted to leave the brick exterior and advertisements painted on it as a unique reminder about how Main Street has changed over the years.” The main brick wall features old paint advertising for long-past retailers Laderer-Davis Clothing Company and Owl Cigars. A Little Patch
OF HEAVEN
BY ERICA LUDWIG
o you dream of making your own strawberry jam with berries you picked yourself? This April, pack up the family and head to Huldy’s Farm, a family owned and operated berry farm in Inola, about 30 minutes east of Tulsa. “We are on a peaceful patch of land easily accessible from Highway 412,” said Owner Gwen Gay. “If the Good Lord permits, strawberries may be ready mid April with the warmer weather we’ve been having. We’re scheduled to be at the Tulsa Farmers Market April 8 and open for the season on April 10.” This year, Gwen says the farm has 22,000 Strawberry plants, which equals out to about an acre and a half of plants. Each strawberry plant produces about a pound of berries. The farm is prepared to accommodate visitors, with

tables and chairs located near the picking area, folding seats available for a $1 rental fee to use while picking, free bottled water, and portable toilets. Huldy’s welcomes birthday parties and family reunions, and customers are always welcome to bring their own picnic lunches and snacks. After picking, strawberries and blackberries are gently transferred from the picking buckets to cardboard flats, so patrons arrive home with berries intact. Blueberries are sturdier, so they are packaged in food-safe plastic bags when picked by customers and packaged into plastic pint containers when the staff picks them. Gwen’s daughter, Erin, named the farm. Her grandparents had owned a 1955 Chevy Truck named Huldy – a nickname for a woman prophetess briefly mentioned in the Bible named Huldah who was strong in her faith in God. In March 2010, with the help of Erin,
friends, neighbors, and Gwen’s Sunday School Class, the first patch of blueberries were planted. In the following years, Gwen and her husband Gerald added strawberries and blackberries to the farm. During strawberry season, the farm will usually be open Monday through Saturday, from 8 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. Please note that hours can change due to inclement weather and availability of ripe berries, so please call to confirm hours for the day you plan to pick. Blueberries should be ready for picking by mid May, and the blackberries should be ready by early June. By mid-June, the gate will usually close by 1:00 p.m. However, if you want to make an after-hours appointment, Monday through Saturday, please call Gwen to schedule an appointment. DISCOUNT IN PRICE, BY ERICA LUDWIG he definition of discount is, “offering goods for sale at a reduced price.” Discounted pricing is sometimes associated with lower quality. Not in this case. Discount Garage Door carries an all-inclusive better product with measurable differences. Discount Garage Door installs 24-gauge steel, high R-value insulated doors and premium garage door operators everywhere from million dollar homes to storage buildings. They use industry and consumer top quality rated products, like Wayne Dalton, Doorlink, Genie, and Liftmaster. “We know these products are the best and we want to offer them for the best price,” said Owner Dustin Loyal. “Most people associate the term ‘discount’ with a cheap product, but we pride ourselves on that name because of our prices. We just want to do right by people and sell them the best quality part or product for a great price.” Dustin was born and raised on a farm in Wellston, Oklahoma, before moving to Phoenix at 18 years old. It was there that he began his career in the garage door industry for a national garage door sales, service and installation company. Dustin moved back to the Oklahoma City area in 2001 and established Discount Garage Door, expanding to Tulsa in 2010. Discount Garage Door not only cares about the quality of your door, but helping you select what will suit your home best. “When you set an appointment for a free estimate, a member of our professional team will come

to your home. We will measure your existing door and opening, identifying any potential obstacles; overcoming those up front,” said Sales Manager Bill Layne. “We will show you color and panel samples. We also have photos of the actual doors available for your selection, and can provide you with a computer generated mock-up of your selection.” While most companies offer warranties only up to a year, Discount Garage Door has a fiveyear warranty on parts and labor. “Our warranty definitely set us apart,” said General Manager Kyle McIntyre. “Most true warranties are for 90 days to a year, and that’s just on parts. We go above and beyond for our customers by offering a five-year warranty on labor. Our reviews are all five star and by real customers in the Tulsa metro area. We really take pride in that.” Another unique factor to the Discount Garage team is their fourlegged family member. Some folks may also recognize Jasper, Dustin’s Irish wolfhound, from Discount Garage Door events and commercials. “We’ve kind of dubbed him our mascot,” says Dustin. “He’s our star. He’s the reason that people walk up to us at shows.” Discount Garage Door operates on a 24/7-business model. An employee is always there to answer the phone, even on nights

and weekends. It will cost you the same whether you have an emergency and need someone immediately on a Sunday night or a Tuesday morning. “We try to stand out from everybody else, from quality of product, to being available for our customers at all times, as well as our quality control even on the smallest job,” said Dustin. “We are always checking with clients on how we can improve. ” Discount Garage Door works with the St. Jude Dream Home each year with 100% donation. They also donate to Habitat for Humanity, Meals on Wheels and the Tulsa Performing Arts Center rehearsal space. “Whether you purchase from us or a competitor, we want you to be well informed about things that matter and are usually overlooked. This is why we created a questionnaire so you know what questions to ask.” Become a part of the family and give Discount Garage Door a call.

t seems the biggest challenge for parents nowadays is mitigating how much “screen time” children indulge in. Video games mimic physical activities and sports. Smartphones offer instant access to movies and TV shows in the car and anywhere else a phone signal permeates. Camp Courage, a nationally accredited camp, offers children an outlet combining fun with the outdoors in a positive environment that instills a love for nature, and builds confidence and friendships for life. “We are so proud of this accreditation because it exceeds state standards,” said Camp Courage founder and director Jennifer Hayes. “This took a year of preparation on our part. From revising procedures to working with staff, we had to be evaluated in person on discipline, safety, etc. 24 |

It’s definitely a credit to our staff. We are so proud of them.” Accreditation is a family’s best evidence that their camp is committed to the health, safety and overall well-being of their child. The American Camp Association accredits approximately 2,400 diverse camps nationally, each camp meeting up to 300 health and safety standards. Jennifer and her husband, Ronnie, started the nonprofit
organization seven years ago. The couple of over 20 years has worked hard to bring their faith-based youth camp to life. Camp Courage is a sort of buffet of outdoor activity for children ages 5 to 14. With activities ranging from hikes, fishing and archery to swimming and

canoeing, children find themselves less drawn to the virtual world and enjoying the real world. With encouragement and guidance from leaders and the small groups of eight, campers meet challenges and have fun, building selfesteem and confidence. Campers engage in different field trips every week to ward off a redundant summer. Parents can even pick different weeks for children, so no need to choose between summer camp and family vacation. Registration is now open for summer day camp in Owasso. Children are dropped off at “Base Camp” between 8:30 and 9 a.m. Parents may pick them up between 5 and 5:30 p.m. Before and after care is available also. Sessions run throughout June and July, and into mid-August.
Campers are given activities to build confidence.

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT BY SEANA WARREN
n 2012, Tony and Emmy Award-winning actress Kristin Chenoweth came home to Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. While she was driving around with friends, she asked if they could drive by the home where she grew up. The new owner was in the front yard and welcomed them into his home, but there was a problem. His daughter, a huge fan of Kristin, wasn’t home to meet her. He led a tour around the house and Kristin made a special stop in her childhood bedroom to take a peek; but, she couldn’t leave without writing a special note for the little girl with whom she now shares a little bit of her childhood. During that same trip, Kristin was home to perform a benefit concert for the Broken Arrow Performing Arts Center. The theater was named after her at that concert. She was so moved, she sat down to talk about what she could give back to her home town. “It all started at a kitchen table following the concert,” said Mark Frie, Broken Arrow Performing Arts Center executive director. “We talked with Kristin about what her legacy would be. She wanted to impact the next generation of artists in Oklahoma.” Four friends joined together to create The Kristin Chenoweth Fund. The group is made up of Kristin, Mark Frie, and John Sawyer and Jack Wallace, partners and realtors at Chinowth & Cohen.

“No matter if they decide to grow up to be an actor, a banker or a lawyer, theater can help every one be better communicators and better speakers. I know theater has helped me in every aspect of my life,” said Jack Wallace. The Kristin Chenoweth Fund will exclusively run this year’s Broadway Boot Camp June 12-16. Guest stars leading the camp with Kristin are Richard Jay Alexander, Broadway Director and Producer for Kristin; Mary Mitchell Campbell Drama Desk Award-winner for Orchestration; Faith Prince, Tony Award-winning Best Actress and film and television star; Joel Ferrel, Dallas Theatre Center Director; and Lara Teeter, Tony-nominated Broadway actor. “This is making a tremendous
impact on area youth. It’s helping shape their lives. I’m honored to be involved,” said Frie. The tuition for the program is $200 per student, but if a student cannot pay for any reason, they are never turned away. Funds are raised from the master class performance and at many of Kristin’s national performances. Kristin will be in town on May 6th performing her Broadway show, “My Love Letter to Broadway”, at 7:30 p.m. at the Broken Arrow Performing Arts Center. The newly selected Broadway Boot Camp students will be introduced during the performance. For tickets to the performances, more information or to donate to the Kristin Chenoweth Fund, please contact the Broken Arrow Performing Arts Center. he thought of even one little boy or girl in Tulsa being traumatized by a horrific act of child abuse is painful enough. But the fact that the numbers are rapidly increasing each year – 2500 children in our community this past year alone – is absolutely heart breaking. Statistics show that one in 15 children is involved in a child abuse investigation in Tulsa County each year. That equals to about two children per averagesized Tulsa classroom. But Tulsans “CAN” fight back. Since 1988, a growing number of volunteers and significant community partners have joined forces through the 501c3 non-profit Child Abuse Network (CAN) that teams the Tulsa Police Department, the Department of Human Services, Oklahoma University Medical Services, the District Attorney’s Office and the intervention services of the network itself to reduce the trauma children face during a child abuse investigation. Board member Ashley Hudgeons, who is also a vice president at Hillcrest, said, “Without CAN, a child would have to be driven to each of the agencies individually and retell his or her experience at each place for each forensic interview. Network’s collaborative solution allows children to come to one location and testify once to diminish the trauma.” Hudgeons, now in her fifth year on the board, has stepped up to cochair CAN’s 6th Annual CANdlelight Ball hosted at the historic Mayo Hotel Friday, April 21, with a cocktail reception at 6:30 p.m. with dinner at 7:30, followed by a night of dancing. Along with co-chair Cari Marshall and honorary chairs Max and Marian Vowel, Hudgeons invites everyone to the black tie ball to celebrate the hard work of those who provide the intervention services and reflect on this community health crisis of child abuse. The event also serves as a fundraiser to help improve the network’s facility as it continues to grow. “When the Child Abuse Network facilities were built, the need back
in 1992 was to serve 40 children a month” Hudgeons says. “Now, we serve more than 50 children a week from every zip code, income level, race, ethnicity and every part of Tulsa. The average child is 8 years old. CAN needs as much awareness and community support as it can get.” The CANdlelight Ball is CAN’s primary fund-raiser. Tickets can be purchased for $500 by phone or email at events@ChildAbuseNetwork.org. Event sponsorships begin at $1000. This year’s “Star Light, Star Bright” theme focuses on the organization’s wish for a brighter future for each child they see. Contribute to a child’s future and reserve your spot for the CANdlelight Ball. CHILD ABUSE NETWORK 2829 SOUTH SHERIDAN | TULSA, OK (918) 624-0217 | CHILDABUSENETWORK.ORG
