COLOR COMMENTARY

BY SEANA WARREN

o you ever get a wild hair and decide it’s time for a new look? You get online or grab a hairstyle magazine and sort through photos at warp speed. Finally, you find the one. The right cut – the right color. It should even compliment your face shape. Now what do you do? Carol Graham knows. She’s the owner of Carol’s Place in Claremore. It’s a comfortable, convenient spot off historic Route 66 where locals flock for great service and advice. “We are passionate about color,” said Carol. “We will work with you to have the color you want but also to insure the integrity of the hair.” Carol explained that so many times, people will bring in photos that require drastic changes to the hair. While changes are possible, they might not all be able to be accomplished in one setting. “If you have dark, brown or black hair and you want to go to a platinum blond or much lighter shade, we have to take a look at the condition and texture of your hair,” said Graham. “Our staff continually trains on new color and products and will work with you to make sure the new color won’t damage your hair.” This is important, as new color combinations are all the rage. Look on Facebook or other social media and you’ll see an array of color offering something for everyone. The crew at Carol’s warns not

D

to get too attached to a clever name, though. If you come across creative names for hair color like Blue Denim, Chocolate Raspberry Swirl or Coffee Blonde, these are just names that the original hair technician has given to describe the color. They aren’t the correct names of actual hair colors. Carol advises to bring in a color picture for consultation to be able to determine what color you desire. “We always tell people that if they are trying out a new color, to schedule about 30 more minutes to their hair appointment. This will insure we have enough time to choose colors, talk about the steps to begin the color process without damaging the hair.” Carol’s Place also offers your pick of the hottest colors for nails. Manicures, pedicures and a whole host of nail services are available by contacting Dani. Spring is near. If you have a wild hair and are ready for a brave new look, come see Carol, Terrin or Dani today. They are ready to bring a little color into your life. BY WHITLEY MUMM n a world of escalating utility prices, homeowners seek to reduce their costs and waste whenever possible. In the Tulsa area, look no further than Community Builders, Inc. to help your home run more efficiently. Owner Greg Wolter started Community Builders, Inc. in his bedroom in the early 1980s. By 1990, they had moved into a building, and nearly every year since then, have seen steady growth in sales. Starting with siding, the company has expanded over the years to its now all-inclusive specialty home improvement services including windows, roofing, bathrooms, sunrooms, insulation, gutters and doors. “I want to see the people that work here improve their lives… We constantly talk about how we can become better human beings. And then, we want to make sure we take care of our customers and that they get a good value,” Wolter said. One way to improve your life is to make your home more energy efficient. Windows, doors, and insulation are three areas where minor change can make a major impact. In fact, Community Builders, GREG WOLTER Inc. has helped customers OF COMMUNITY BUILDERS, INC. reduce their utility costs by 50 percent, just by Photography by Chandler Branzell upgrading windows and insulation. Their energy efficient products include 10 |

EnviroView replacement windows, Green Energy Barrier radiant insulation, Cedar Ridge composite siding, and insulated 26 Gauge Steel metal roofing. Wolter said, “Think of insulation like a sponge. Eventually, a sponge gets saturated and can’t soak anything else in. Insulation is the same way, it blocks for a while, then gets full and doesn’t do any good. If you can reflect that energy off of it, the insulation works better for a longer period of time. That’s what the energy-barrier material does.” Why should you care about your home’s energy efficiency? First, making energy-efficient home improvements could save you thousands of dollars in energy costs. Second, promoting energy efficiency helps reduce the carbon footprint. “Your house pollutes the environment more than anything else,” said Wolter. “If we can improve the efficiency of a home, then we also reduce the carbon footprint, which of course is good for everybody. Good for the pocketbook, good for the consumer, and good for the value of the home.” Start improving your life and your home today and give Community Builders, Inc. a call. BEING NUMBER ONE BY SEANA WARREN

F

lip through a magazine or television and radio commercials and you’ll hear company after company tout their number one status. But, number one in what – total sales volume, most transactions, most employees? We sat down with OklaHomes Realty, Inc. recently to talk about what people look for in a real estate company when selling or buying a home. “In modern advertising, ‘perception’ seems to be everything,” said Allen Stout, owner of OklaHomes Realty, inc. “Twist statistics hard enough and every company can claim they are number one at something; but this can be confusing for consumers, especially without the ability to check the facts.” Stout explained in our fast-paced life, consumers don’t always have the time

or access to research specific industry claims. Buying or selling a home means trusting a real estate entity with the single largest investment most people will ever own. If being number one means the most transactions, Stout warns you could get lost in the shuffle of big companies. “What does being number one prove?” continued Stout. “In some cases it may mean a company focuses on having the highest production, or have the most transactions, or number of agents. A more worthy goal is to be number one in trust, integrity, honesty, transparency, reputation and accessibility. In other words, make the customer number one.” OklaHomes selects agents that believe in the aforementioned values; and believes too much focus on the numbers can possibly lead consumers in the wrong direction. Instead, they have built a smaller team of local, devoted agents that live and serve their community in more ways than just real estate. Team members at OklaHomes have a long history of serving on community boards and projects, church committees, and various other philanthropic organizations. In other words, they are dedicated to making Rogers County a better place to live

so that when consumers decide to invest in a home or business here, they would have participated in making it a better place to live and work. “Some real estate companies don’t have an office or agents that live in Rogers County,” said Stout. “That means they are not as familiar with a particular home, business or area like OklaHomes’ agents would be. We feel we are personally invested in a customer’s life before we even meet them.” If you are ready to purchase or sell a home or business in the Rogers County area, the friendly staff at OklaHomes Realty, Inc. invites you to stop by the office or give them a call today. They have experienced professionals serving Claremore, Verdigris, Oologah, Owasso, Tulsa, Broken Arrow and Grand Lake. OKLAHOMES REALTY 2104 RTE 66 | CLAREMORE, OK (918) 341-2800 WWW.OKLAHOMES.COM

“THRIFT-Y” SPRING CLEANING TIPS

BY SEANA WARREN

inter’s almost over. It’s time to end your annual hibernation underneath piles of laundry and clean out those closets, drawers and garages. You can do it! But once you’ve released your emotional attachment to all that stuff, what on Earth would you do with it? Maybe sell it on an online site, have a yard sale or give it away. The folks at Thrift Harbor have a suggestion – donate it and watch synchronicity in action. Here’s how it works: (1) You donate your clothing, household and décor items, and furniture items in gently used condition. (2) The volunteers at Thrift Harbor take the items and sort them, clean them, label them and place them in retail stores in Claremore, Bartlesville and Rogers, Arkansas. (3) Shoppers from the community get deals for reasonably priced items, making it easy to clothe their families and provide

W

household necessities. (4) The non-profit organization uses the money collected at the stores to support Hope Harbor, which provides on-site services for at-risk teens through it’s Children’s Home and Academy, including professional Christian counseling and parent training services that improve the lives of children and the needs of families facing pain, loss and desperation. (5) The stores are also used for onthe-job training and career enhancement for volunteers, which improve economic development. “In the beginning, Thrift Harbor was created to develop a retail stream of financial support for all Hope Harbor programming,” said Chris Brill, assistant tant director of Hope Harbor.. “But the vision has developed oped over the years to include much more meaningful relationships tionships with the community, particularly with volunteers. unteers. We are simply ly astounded at the positive ositive force our retaill stores have

forged in all the communities we serve. We are humbled.” Long-time volunteers turned permanent employees Mary Baumgardner and Kayla McDrummond agree that the mission of Hope Harbor has grown to into a multi-faceted one. “We have regular customers who come in and call us by name,” said McDrummond. “They tell us their stories and we think of them as extended family.” Baumgardner explained that customers are appreciative of the low cost for quality items and for the fellowship the staff provides. “Thrift Harbor is a beautiful way to serve one another.” Hope Harbor also donates new underwear and socks, along with shoes and

clothing items to local schools for their clothes closets in nearly every school in Rogers County. Children needing a quick change of clothes or more substantial needs are served by Hope Harbor. The items come from your donations to Thrift Harbor. If you would like to donate items, Thrift Harbor has over 100 blue donation bins all over northeastern Oklahoma, northwest Arkansas and southeast Kansas, or you may donate directly at any of the retail stores. To volunteer, you may call or visit any retail store during hours of operation. THRIFT HARBOR 316 W WILL ROGERS BLVD | CLAREMORE, OK (918) 923-4860

Which is better, having a few good agents selling a lot or a lot of agents selling a little? Would you prefer to be surrounded by a few successful agents who are dedicated to their profession or a lot of inexperienced agents who have decided to “give real estate a try?” At OklaHomes Realty, our commitment is to full time career agents who have learned that quality preempts quantity. Our goal is to do more with less.

Bridal Round Up BY ERICA LUDWIG hen planning a wedding, tradition says to have something borrowed, something blue, something old and something new. Brides today are opting with a different approach: just about everything borrowed or made yourself. But sometimes executing an idea from Pinterest is a lot harder to accomplish than it looks. If you consider yourself a DIY bride to be, you won’t want to miss this chance to fall in love with fresh ideas and concepts for your big day. OK40 Ranch is hosting a Bridal “Barn” Buy and Sell event on Saturday, March 25 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Guests can expect wedding displays as well as items for purchase from vendors at individual booths. “I’ve been in this industry for 30 years,” says OK40 Ranch Owner, Debbie Hunter, “and about 90% of the weddings I see nowadays are do it yourself. vendors for any items they wish to purchase. “I’ll even be putting a few vintage dresses on display,” said Debbie. “We’ll have photographers and other professional vendors there, and I’ll also be giving advice about planning a wedding from my experience over the years.” Hors d’oeuvres will be served and carriage rides will also be available for the event. There are no admission or booth fees, however Debbie does request that any who wish to participate as a vendor or guest contact her to RSVP. In addition to weddings and other large events such as church picnics, business retreats, retirement and graduation parties, OK40 Ranch offers romantic getaways for two and relaxing weekends away for small groups of friends. “Whether your party is two people or 250, OK40 Ranch provides the ambiance of a charming B&B with the amenities of a luxurious upscale hotel,” says Debbie. A PERMANENT PLACE

FOR PORTABLE POSSESSIONS BY SEANA WARREN ttention all outdoor fanatics – winter is almost over! It’s time once again to put an end to our annual hibernation and grow something green. All our time spent outdoors can have its challenges, though. It requires a lot of stuff to keep our lawns and homes well-maintained. Lawn mowers, leaf blowers, pruning sheers, seeders, hoes, rakes, ladders, hoses… you name it. Chances are, over time, all that stuff has wound up in your garage and now there’s no place to park your car. The Armbristers of Claremore have got the answer for you: portable outdoor buildings. Since 2007, Lewis and Patricia Armbrister have been selling stylish, quality-constructed portable buildings by Derksen. “Our buildings sell themselves,” said Patricia. “We welcome anyone who is thinking about purchasing a portable building to walk around the lot and get an idea of size and quality. You won’t get a pushy salesman at our place, just lots of room to look. When you’re ready to talk or have questions, just come see me at the house next door to the lot.” Patricia also offers a choice of brochures with pricing, sizes, materials and other information to take with you while making a decision about a portable building. While Derksen buildings can be purchased or leased-to-own, Patricia explains that she offers good discounts on buildings that have been repossessed. “Regardless of your need, Derksen can provide you a building, new or used,” she said. “After you make the decision to get a portable building, check out our

large inventory.” Derksen’s portable buildings, sheds, garages and cabins also include an industry-leading warranty on treated Wood Strand Technology siding, which resists fungal rot and decay, termites, splitting, cracking and warping in a rich cedar grain texture. Shingled roofs come with a 30-year warranty, while the 29-gauge standard metal roofs come with a 40year warranty. The company also offers a five-year craftsmanship warranty. With Derksen’s buy-or-lease program and no credit check, customers can save money when compared to renting at a storage facility long-term. “Buying or leasing a Derksen building is hasslefree,” says Patricia. “You can lease or purchase a building up to 60 months.” There is also no penalty for early payoff. Delivery and setup are available at no extra charge. “To fit your budget, we can discuss your building needs and the best options for you,” says Patricia. “We can discuss metal buildings, which can be less expensive from Derksen with the same quality workmanship.” The Armbristers have two additional locations: Oologah, located right at Creekside Nursery, or Highway 20 East, next to Kum & Go by the turnpike in Claremore. “Our son, Jeff, is managing that location,” she adds. Start cleaning your tools out of your garage and stop by to see the variety at Derksen Portable. DERKSEN PORTABLE BUILDINGS 1401 S. REAVIS RD | CLAREMORE, OK (918) 341-6530 WWW.DERKSENBUILDINGS.COM
