BE AWARE:
FRAUDSTERS IN FULL FORCE THIS TAX SEASON
BY JOCELYN WOOD

ou receive an email from what appears to be the IRS, warning you that your tax return is unable to be processed due to errors. In order to avoid a tax penalty or possible legal action, you are instructed to provide some information immediately – click the link to get started. Do you click the link? The criminal behind this scam hopes you do. It’s known as phishing, and these scams steal millions of dollars each year, according to the FBI. The IRS is warning taxpayers to be aware of the Dirty Dozen Tax Scams you may encounter, available at irs.gov, such as false tax preparers, phone scams and phishing. Phishing is when a fraudster sends an email message pretending to be a company, like the IRS, a bank or popular retail site. The email may claim your account has been compromised or there was an error with your recent purchase. It will direct you to click on a link to resolve the issue. The link leads to a fake website that looks authentic and you feel comfortable to enter sensitive information. 10 || 10
The IRS does not initiate contact by email, text message or social media channels to request personal or financial information. They also will never call and demand immediate payment over the phone. If you get an email or phone call like this, it’s a scam. Protect yourself with these tips. BE SKEPTICAL Assume every offer and notice (even from reputable companies) is a scam and take steps to confirm credibility. “If you start with the assumption, this is a scam, then you’re less likely to fall victim if and when in fact it

is,” said Gordon Rudd, RCB Bank Information Security Officer. “Fraudsters pretend to be companies we use every day. We click without thinking and presto, easy money for criminals.” DO NOT CLICK ON LINKS IN EMAILS Go to the company’s official website to log in to your account. “If you receive an alert stating there is something wrong with your account, do not click the provided link,” said Rudd. “Criminals use scare tactics to get you to ‘act now’ and ‘protect your information’ when in fact they’re leading you into a trap.”
Never give out personal or financial information to any request that you did not initiate. This includes bank account numbers, Social Security number, username, mother’s maiden name, challenge question answers or PINs - “If your bank sends you an email requesting you to update your information, DO NOT click on the link in the email,” Rudd warns. “Go to your bank’s official webpage and log in to your account. LET THE GAMES BEGIN BY PEGGY MCGEHEE
ark your calendars for Tuesday, March 21st, Donkey Basketball is returning to Claremore. Come to the Frank Mobra Gymnasium at Claremore High School at 7:00pm to see last year’s teams - the Claremore Police Department, Claremore Fire Department, Claremore High School Faculty and Rogers State University Athletic Staff fight for the title of “Donkey Basketball Champions of Claremore”. Never seen donkey basketball? Now’s your chance to mark it off your bucket-list! Let the donkey-dunking games begin. The medical community of Claremore came together in 1987 to begin discussion for forming a non-profit agency to help families of Rogers County with respite care for adults. In 1991, Rogers County Adult Day Care was opened (originally Eldercare) and 26 years later, RCADC, a United Way agency, is still providing much needed daily care for the community’s elderly and adults with special needs. Space has been an obstacle for

the agency’s center for several years. This year, RCADC purchased a new building that is being renovated and they will be moving into it soon, allowing them to accommodate those on the waiting list for their services. The Oklahoma Department of Human Services provides some of the funding for the center and that funding is in jeopardy of being drastically reduced. So, in true RCADC fashion, they are having a fundraiser. Admission is $10 for adults, $6
for students and kids under 6 are admitted free. Sponsorships with advertising are available from $100-$1000. For more information, please contact Wanda Inman, Director. Come out and support this great agency’s service to the community and cheer on your favorite Claremore team! The Rogers County Adult Day Care is a private non-profit organization designed to be a community-based service benefiting the impaired adult and their caregivers based out of Claremore, Oklahoma. The mission is to provide a safe place of warmth and caring to promote the independence of the impaired adult, enhance the quality of life, and prevent premature institutionalization. The intent is to provide therapeutic rehabilitative , social and health maintenance in order to insure respite for caregivers. ROGERS COUNTY ADULT DAY CARE

WHAT’S LURKING IN YOUR WATER? BY SEANA WARREN
ou can’t turn on the television news without hearing about contaminates in water systems across the country. Stories like the one out of Flint, Michigan have made all Americans more aware of the deadly dangers of impure and unclean drinking water. Unfortunately, that’s only half of the story. What about well water that is not treated by an urban water treatment plant? What about the chemicals added to public water systems like fluoride, ammonia and chloramine, just to name a few? “Chloramine, a chemical made up of chlorine and ammonia, is added to drinking and bathing water in Tulsa, Jenks, Bixby, Broken Arrow and Owasso, among others,” said Patrick Taylor, co-owner of Kinetico Water Systems. “We show you how to take out up to 99% of those chemicals and serve your family safe drinking water.” The friendly staff at Kinetico Water Systems can help you test

Of course, children are not the only ones to suffer from fractures. The average adult will sustain two fractures over a lifetime, according to a survey by the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. Children often engage in riskier behavior, resulting in falls and similar accidents. This causes more frequent fractures. LOVE ON THE ROCKS The Big Meat Run hits Disney BY CLAIRE CARTER
t
has been called one of the largest events in the state of Oklahoma. The beautiful part about it is that it all happened by accident. 22 years ago, seasoned machinist John Sumner was working in Claremore, Oklahoma when he ventured down to Grand Lake to check out the Pensacola Dam in the little community of Disney. It was then that Sumner discovered an amazing natural rock garden, which is the result of 77 years of water passing through the turbines of the dam. Worn down to the bedrock to form a canyon like surrounding, it became a place for

some 10,000 from all over the country during the course of one weekend in the little lake town. You’ll see a little bit of everything at the event in
It grew into a customer appreciation event for Sumner Machine Works, which is owned by Sumner in Arkansas City, Kansas. By word of mouth alone the event that started with 12 people now brings in
terms of transportation; Jeeps, trucks, RZRS, fourwheelers and even a few spectacles such as a horse or a tractor. Yet, it’s the custom made “rock crawlers” that Sumner helps build, that most of the spectators

come to see. There are two major “climbs” that are attempted by most, Viagra Hill and Bounty Hill. There is a certain satisfaction in watching the participants attempt and succeed the vertical crawls, yet there is more of a crowd reaction when they tumble over and fail. The name of the event, The Big Meat Run, comes from the thick width of the tires that adorn the rock crawling machines. “It really was just a matter of luck and good timing,” stated Sumner on the event itself. Due to some local politics in Disney over the years, the event still lacks major sponsorships. But
Sumner forges on just for the fun of it it. “I love seeing people having fun with their families and having a good time,” he said. The free event, which takes place this March 24-26 below the Pensacola Dam, will no doubt result in another great turnout of spectators and participants. In terms of tourism, the numbers are undoubtedly huge for not only Disney, but
for the 60 mile radius su di the h event surrounding in Northeast Oklahoma. Not only are gas and food sales astronomical over the course of the three-day event; hotels, cabins, parks and campgrounds are booked up for miles around. “It’s a great event and we’re lucky to have it return year after year,” stated Disney Mayor Chris Tutor. Tutor, who also owns the Dam Rec Park, stated
th hat The Big Mea Meat Run has that elped put Disney on the helped map, inspired other rock crawling events and even brought new campgrounds to the small town. In just a few short years Disney has seen a handful of new business owners come to town. CopperWood Lodge owned by Dusty Wood has built a number of great cabins close to the dam. Two Mom’s Campground owner Shelly Martin has also
built a fun spot for offroaders to enjoy enjoy. There’s also Cherokee Spirit RV Park, which is a gated park owned by Norma Crockett and the oldest campground Hogan’s Off Road Park owned by Russ Hogan. Start a new family tradition this year and come out to The Big Meat Run. JOHN SUMNER’S BIG MEAT RUN

IT’S SWARMING UP BY SEANA WARREN
T
he groundhog was wrong – at least for the Oklahoma area. While parts of the north and west have been ravaged by snow and dangerous rains, it’s been quite nice in the Sooner state. But nicer weather can invite a few visitors that no one wants to entertain termites. Swarming of these destructive and pesky little creatures usually occurs in the spring and most often during the morning following a warm rain shower, whereby the soil temperature is around 70 degrees Fahrenheit. There are several areas in green country that are in high risk of springtime termite swarms including: Bartlesville, Broken Arrow, Claremore, Jenks, Miami, Muskogee, Okmulgee, Owasso, Ponca City, Sand Springs, Sapulpa and Tulsa. “We are armed and prepared for the early spring weather,” said Sheila Disler or Mother Nature’s Pest Control & Lawn Care. “Treatments are administered in and around our homes, garden, shrubs and lawns, therefore diminishing the inherent numbers of termites, mosquitoes, fleas, ticks, and bedbugs.” Termite colony nest
development is slow in the first few months. But after a few years, the queen termite can actually produce up to 10,000 offspring a year. One queen may live for many years and workers up to two years. The swarmers go to work in the thousands after a mature termite nest is large and well-established on smaller nests. When specialists find a smaller swarmer nest, it’s a sure sign that a larger termite nest is in the vicinity and professional protection is required. “We always perform a thorough, free inspection at your residence or business before recommending any treatment, “said Justin Buckmaster of Mother Nature’s. “Each pest problem
is different and requires a tailormade solution. Mother’s Nature’s experienced staff is ready to help our neighbors in green country prepare.” According to the United States Department of Agriculture, U.S. residents spend an estimated $5 billion annually to control termites and repair termite damage. One termite swarm can cause thousands to hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of damage to one home or business. “Our biggest investments are our homes and businesses, and it makes sense to proactively guard those investments with professional help,” said Sheila. “And, Mother Nature’s has been serving the green country area since 1979. If you need us, we will be there.” MOTHER NATURE’S PEST CONTROL AND LAWN CARE
Mother Nature’s Pest Control & Lawn Care department managers include: Brent Pressnall, pests; Tom Sevitts, lawn; David Grady, human resources; and (not pictured) Andrea Monks, office manager. Sheila Disler is communications director, and Justin Buckmaster is marketing director for Mother Nature’s.

oodwill Industries of Tulsa is celebrating their 90th anniversary in 2017– 90 years of operating with integrity, treating others with respect, upholding commitment, celebrating diversity and providing space for empowerment. “This anniversary just gives us an even greater reason to celebrate,” said Nancy Webster, the director of community relations. “We’ve been privileged to serve the community for 90 years, and are excited to continue growing our programs and the number of people we serve.” A staple in the community since 1927, the mission of Goodwill Industries of Tulsa is simple: to provide work opportunities, job training and support services for people with disabilities and other employment barriers. “Our employment and job training programs also focus on job retention which truly transforms lives, now and into the

In 2016 alone, 469, 933 people donated 21 million pounds of clothing and household items. The revenue that was generated by the sale of those goods allowed Goodwill Industries of Tulsa to provide job training and other related services to 2,156 individuals, and to serve 3,935 people through
their Goodwill Job Connection program. During 2016, Goodwill training participants filled 593 jobs in the community, and graduated with GEDs and other certifications. In the tradition of Goodwill Industries’ founding motto, “A hand-up, not a hand out”, program participants

The Superhero Challenge is the organization’s second annual fundraiser; the other is the annual black tie event, the Candlelight Ball. According to Rebecca Thompson, event co-chair, it was a no brainer to put this event together. “The thought was simple,” she said. “We have an event for adults, why not have something for the entire family?” Tulsa and the surrounding communities come out to support and build the event up to make it a huge success. Many organizations volunteer to build the obstacle courses to make it light and fun. Thompson says, “CAN is so well run 28 |

arch is National Save Your Vision Month. This year, the American Optometric Association is promoting awareness around digital eyestrain and the importance of receiving regular, comprehensive eye exams from an optometrist. The American Optometric Association’s (AOA) 2017 campaign focuses specifically on blue light’s impact on overall health. According to the AOA, the average American spends seven hours per day using digital devices. Overexposure to blue light due to smartphones, tablets and other technology use for extended periods of time can cause vision damage, sleep problems and more. AOA revealed recently that 88 percent of Americans know that digital devices can negatively affect their vision, but the average American still spends seven or more hours per day looking at their screens. This overexposure to blue light – high-energy visible light emitted from digital devices – can lead to digital eye strain, sleep problems, blurred vision, headaches and neck and shoulder pain, among other things. Research from the AOA also indicates that the average millennial spends nine hours per day on devices such as smartphones, tablets, LED monitors and flat-screen TVs which also emit blue light. Digital devices are an important part of everyday life, and encourages patients to learn about blue light and its impact on vision and health during Save Your Vision Month 2017 in March. This year, AOA is challenging everyone to prioritize not only eye health, but overall health and wellbeing, and encourages Americans to limit exposure to blue light. It’s as easy as looking away from your screen every 20 minutes and powering down an hour before bed. If you think you are experiencing any of the symptoms listed above due to prolonged exposure to blue light, schedule an appointment with Dr. Hart’s Primary Eye Care today.

IMPORTANT TIPS FOR YOUR
EYES AND DIGITAL DEVICES The following tips explore ways people can protect their eyes and monitor digital screen usage while at home or work:
POWER DOWN BEFORE YOU TURN IN Turn your digital devices off at least one hour before bed.
UNPLUG WITH THE AOA 20-20-20 RULE When you are using any device or computer, make a conscious effort every day to take a 20-second break and look away from the screen, every 20 minutes and view something 20 feet away.
STEP BACK Maintain a comfortable working distance from your digital device by using the zoom feature to see small print and details, rather than bringing the device closer to your eyes.
ADJUST YOUR DEVICE TO FIT YOUR NEEDS The AOA recommends reducing the glare by adjusting device settings or using a glare filter to decrease the amount of blue light reflected from the screen.
SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT Visit an optometrist by going to AOA.org to schedule an appointment for a comprehensive eye exam to detect and address vision problems.

esiding in the heart of downtown Broken Arrow, Toast is the perfect place for brunch dates or a gathering of friends over breakfast tacos and mimosas. Servers greet you like an old friend while upholding professional service. Under the same ownership as Franklin’s Pork & Barrel, another Broken Arrow staple known for its unique spins on classic entrées, Toast aims to offer innovative and locally sourced meals along with seasonal menus for its patrons. The restaurant features an array of breakfast items savory and sweet. Try their famous Benny’s, or eggs
R
benedict options. Highly recommended are the Georgia Benny’s, a dish consisting of a hand-made cheddar biscuit with a hand-breaded chicken thigh and poached eggs, topped with creamy hollandaise and served with homemade fried potatoes. This specialty pairs comfort with fine dining and goes great with a cup of coffee. For the sweet tooth, choose from the seven different entrees Toast offers in house. The lemon blueberry pancakes are a great take on a classic item. Soufflé-style pancakes are served with fresh blueberries, vanilla butter and fresh fruit. If you’re feeling fancy, try the berry
cream cheese crepes, filled with lemony cream cheese and topped with triple berry compote. If you like options of savory with your sweet, you can always add a side of eggs, biscuits or breakfast tacos. Bright colors, brick walls and conversation to fill tables surrounding make this restaurant a popular brunch spot. Generous, sharable portions leave for a happy wallet, with prices ranging from 7-15 dollars. Head over to Broken Arrow Main Street to see why Toast is proving itself to be the greatest thing in breakfast since sliced bread. TOAST 201 S.
