Donut Delivery in Tulsa Local donut delivery business gains momentum By Julie Alexander

Some Saturday mornings, Alana Kennon feels like she has seven kids instead of three. A busy mom of avid soccer players, Kennon found a way to simplify things: When it’s her turn to provide snacks to the team, Kennon calls Donut Run, a new concept in food delivery. Rather than spending precious time in a drive-through or at the store, Kennon has the snack delivered directly

to the soccer field. “I have multiple kids on multiple fields,” she said. “I love anything that helps us busy parents.” The brainchild of friends Cody Andrus and Ryan Marrs, Donut Run will deliver donuts to just about anywhere in the Tulsa metro area, including Jenks, Owasso, Bixby, Broken Arrow and Glenpool. Wall Street and The White House BY MELANIE HASTYGRANT

The most common question I am asked when clients come into the office these days is about how the upcoming presidential election will affect their investments. Truth be told, the markets hate uncertainty. With a change in political power, Americans are left with a feeling of uncertainty. Like no other political contest in recent memory, the nation is transfixed on the 2016 presidential election. While Main Street looks to the fall campaign with great anticipation, many investors do not. When you step into the voting booth, you should consider which candidate is not only the right person for the nation, but your personal finances as well. Indeed, this is the Politics of Investing. Today’s issues of energy, terrorism, healthcare, race relations, and gun control can seem very daunting. As President Harry Truman told us, “The United States has always anticipated the future with courage and excitement.” As investors we have experienced firsthand extremely difficult times. From assassinations, to wars, acts of violence, oil embargoes, and crippling

conversations, the election is still many MONTHS away. Moving forward, be prepared for a change in political power. It will happen whether you are ready or not. Review your investments now and determine what changes, if any, need to be made to prepare yourself. Plan to take advantage of opportunities in the market. recessions, our great nation has faced unimaginable circumstances. Whether it is Trump, Bernie, or Clinton this fall here are some facts to keep in mind: Don’t listen to the peanut gallery. The debates and elections bring a multitude of “what if” scenarios to the forefront. Will ObamaCare be done away with? Are taxes going to be on the rise? What will happen to my investment accounts? Which bathroom can I use? Relying solely on assumptions can result in impulsive financial behaviors. Being a financial planner, I air on the side of caution. I don’t recommend basing decisions on speculation. Have a plan, and stick to your plan. Plan to take advantage of opportunities in the market. Be a high flyer! Policies will come and go, and there is no changing that. While this topic is a focal point of many

Mind your own. While it is so easy to get wrapped up in the national debt issues, personal finances are under your control. There is a great tax calculator online at taxpolicycenter.org if you are interested to see how the election will affect you. Once individual debt is handled, the shift moves to long term finances. An example of that would be retirement. If you are concerned about your future, don't hesitate seeking the help of a financial planner. Give us a call. We can help. NNew Driveways LCI Concrete provides expert, dependable service for driveway renovations

By Sheryl Sowell Summer is here which means block parties, barbecues and home improvement tasks. If you’re looking to boost your home’s appeal, think of what you first notice upon arrival at a house. Is it the kitchen? Bathroom? Garage? No – it’s the driveway! After years of winter snow, ice and corrosive salt covering the driveway, the concrete inevitably deteriorates and becomes pitted

20 years of experience, he knows exactly what he is doing. He has been in business with LCI Concrete since 2005. “Concrete is durable, and when the soil and concrete are properly prepared and poured, you can expect it to last at least 30 to 40 years,” he says. “Concrete is also environmentally friendly, as it is composed of renewable resources that can be recycled into granular fill or concrete aggregate.” LCI Concrete first lays 3/8-inch rebar on industry recommended twofoot grid patterns after the subsurface has been properly prepared. Using industry standards of 3500 psi, the concrete is then poured and finished. Upgrades are available at a low cost. “We have one goal – to make every customer proud of their new LCI Concrete product that will service them well for decades to your home. come,” says Kalan.

AA Year of Smiles

Goodwill Industries of Tulsa celebrates 2015 Award Winners with luncheon at Southern Hills Marriott Hotel

By Duane Blankenship the training and opportunities needed to be successful in the workplace. Goodwill President David Oliver and Chairman Page Bachman highlighted accomplishments and changes made in 2015 to position the organization for future growth. Details are available in the Goodwill Industries of Tulsa Annual Report. The Achiever of the Year award honored Jeremiah Ruddle. Once dependent on his family, Jeremiah had the drive to succeed

but lacked confidence and skills. He came to the company in 2015 and enrolled in TulsaWORKS career readiness training to gain basic interviewing skills. He then completed the employment essentials class and learned how to market himself. Upon completing TulsaWORKS private security training, Jeremiah found employment as a security guard at St. Simeon’s and loves his job. Through the Goodwill’s Savings Match program, Jeremiah has his own car and is saving to purchase a home. Trenton Swafford, Graduate of the Year award recipient, was diagnosed with a benign bone tumor in his femur and was told he would never walk again. He proved them wrong. Limited mobility made 2015 Award Winners are (left to right): Security Bank, Community Partner of the it difficult to get to school Year. Representing the bank was President/CEO Dawne Stafford; Graduate of on time, the Year Trenton Swafford; Achiever of the Year Jeremiah Ruddle; and so Trenton Employee of the Year Jimmy Rainwater. Over 700 employees and friends of Goodwill Industries of Tulsa celebrated a year of smiles and accomplishments at the Annual Awards Luncheon May 10th at Southern Hills Marriott Hotel. News Anchor for KTUL, Kristin Dickerson, served as the master of ceremonies for the awards presentation. Goodwill provides work opportunities, job training and support services for people with disabilities or other employment barriers. They envision a community where all people have

dropped out in the 11th grade. He was also diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome which added new challenges. Trenton told an Oklahoma Department of Rehabilitation Services counselor that he wanted to earn his GED and get a job. He was directed Goodwill’s Transition Services Program for Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder as well as their GED program. Trenton learned valuable social skills, gained confidence and tackled his fears of being around people. He helped fellow students succeed and became a role model himself. Trenton earned his GED, graduated with honors in math and history and spoke at the graduation ceremony. While Trenton was waiting in the lobby for a job interview with Red Lobster, he noticed a customer who needed assistance and sprang into action. The manager saw what happened and the first two words in the interview were, “You’re hired.” Jimmy Rainwater was recognized as Employee of the Year. Due to gross neglect, malnourishment and failure to thrive, Jimmy was removed from his biological family and placed into foster care when he

was a toddler. He was featured on KTUL-TV’s weekly segment, “A Waiting Child”. The night it aired, Clara Sue Rainwater and her husband recognized Jimmy who had attended a class with one of their three daughters. After a short discussion, the Rainwaters decided they would like to add a son to the family and Jimmy was adopted. He grew into an energetic, enthusiastic young man and has been a Goodwill employee for 15 years. In his second year he was craving a more challenging job and transitioned to Goodwill’s Group Worksites program at Hillcrest Hospital where he is a cardboard baler. He loves his work, co-workers and the Hillcrest staff and they love his upbeat, friendly and outgoing personality. Security Bank was honored as Community Partner for 2015. Bank President and CEO Dawne Stafford received the award on the company’s behalf. Thanks to Security Bank, Goodwill and all of Tulsa, individuals have been able to overcome considerable employment barriers to employment through faithful support.

the business. “We’re Oklahoma owned, Oklahoma based, and plan on staying here a long, long time,” said Brad. “We are not ‘storm chasers’ as are many of the companies you see in our area after a large storm. We’re here to stay!” Whenever disaster hits and

Nu-Roof only uses quality architectural shingles with a 3050 year manufacturer’s warranty. They also do both residential and commercial repairs as well as replacements. “We don’t use 3-tab shingles,” said Shane. “We recommend upgrading to improved, high-quality architectural shingles that are manufactured to withstand up to 110 mph winds. In addition to the Lifetime Manufacturer’s Warranty, Nu-Roof offers a 10year warranty on workmanship. It’s part of our standard package.” Nu-Roof requires no payment up front. Customers pay when all work is completed and the customer is totally satisfied with the job. “Our shingles are installed properly and we use the right

ASK MELLA AT MY CHOICE REAL TIPS FOR SENIORS LIVING INDEPENDENTLY

Are You Living Independently Successfully? Seniors living alone at home may not realize there are guidelines that can help them measure their effectiveness to live independently. The first set of guidelines or list of activities are labeled IADL and the second set is labeled ADL. Let’s take a moment to review both sets of activities. Make notes of what activities you are not doing or cannot do. This is an easy self assessment. Independent Activities of Daily Living (IADL) are the guidelines for determining if seniors are living at home successfully independent. These activities include safely driving, managing finances, shopping, preparing nutritious meals, using the telephone, managing medications, and maintaining the home by doing housework and basic maintenance. How are you handling transportation needs? Are you driving safely? Have you had accidents? Using public transportation effectively? Are you confused in traffic when off your normal routes? In managing your finances, are your bills consistently paid on time? Do you have a budget you follow? Are there unpaid bills or messages from creditors despite having enough funds? When shopping are you able to prepare a list, shop, and load and unload the car? Do you run out or have excessive amounts of essential household items? Are you relying on others to shop for you? Preparing nutritious meals keeps seniors healthy and strong. Do you occasionally skip meals or choose meals with little nutritional value? Are you using foods before the expiration dates and throwing out foods past the “Use by” date? Cell phones are both a blessing and a curse! Are you able to answer the phone consistently and return voicemail messages? Can you see the numbers to dial? Are you limiting social interaction because you are frustrated with the phone? How are you managing your medications? Do you have a system to ensure you take your medications on time and in the proper dosage? Do you forget to take your medications? Do you have a system for refilling your medications at the pharmacy? Maintaining your home means you are not letting trash accumulate, your house is

reasonably clean and you are making minor repairs as needed. Do you take your trash out on a regular basis? Is the kitchen kept tidy with no spoiled food? If a minor repair such as tightening a handle on a door is needed can you do it or are you able to get that done? Activities of Daily Living (ADL) are used by state agencies and determine whether seniors should be living alone. You should be aware that the ability to accomplish most of these activities is considered a true measure of your ability to age in place. There are five activities deemed the most important: Mobility sometimes called Ambulation, Eating, Toileting, Dressing, and Bathing, sometimes called Grooming. The additional risk factor is Falling which is usually asked in conjunction with reviewing the ADLs. If you want to age in place you must try to retain your mobility. Can you get up from a chair or bed? Are you unsteady when you walk? Do you sway back and forth when you walk? If so, can you use a walker or cane for support? Are you able to propel your wheelchair? When eating are you able to cut up your own food? Are you still using utensils to eat? Does someone have to feed you? As we age, incontinence can be a problem. Can you manage without having accidents during the day? Are you soiling the bed at night? Are you able to wear adult incontinence products and dispose of them properly? Can you get dressed appropriately for the day? Are you mis-buttoning or wearing the same clothes every day? Are you clothes clean? Do you need help choosing clothes? Are you bathing regularly without being reminded? Are you unkempt? Are you keeping your teeth clean? Does someone have to assist you when bathing? Finally review your past year focusing on falls or injuries that may have occurred. Have you fallen in the past year? Past 6 months? Have you been hospitalized due to a fall? Studies show that injuries due to falls are the number one reason people have to move from their homes. Reviewing the IADLs and the ADLs can help you self assess and become aware of your limitations or your successes. If you are

CCommitted to Customers Serving customers is highest priority at Green Country Mitsubishi of Bixby.

By Duane Blankenship Green Country Mitsubishi opened their doors to Bixby and its surrounding communities in October of 2014. Chad Jennings serves as the general manager/ managing partner for the dealership. Jennings has spent his entire adult life in the automotive industry and enjoys being a part of Green Country Mitsubishi’s steady growth. “It’s great living, working and being involved in a growing city that has maintained that small community mentality,” he said. Mitsubishi has been the fastest growing Japanese auto maker for two consecutive years. The dealership’s commitment to providing quality products and services to their customers is just part of why they are recognized as an automotive leader in the Bixby area. They are the largest group of locally owned dealerships in the Tulsa area. There are six locations including the one in Bixby. “We always keep at least 30 used vehicles priced below $10,000 on our lot,” Jennings explained. “We’ve found that there’s a genuine need in our area for vehicles in this range. Before putting a used vehicle on the lot, each is inspected and reconditioned if needed. We’re

not going to consciously sell you a product that is not sound and safe to drive.” The company provides parts and services for Mitsubishi vehicles plus most other makes and models. They are eager to make your new or used car-buying experience quick and as hasslefree as humanly possible. They also offer financing options for your consideration. Jennings is confident, even if you have bad credit, no credit or are a first-time buyer they can get you into a new or used car or truck. “Parts Manager Kim Harris and Service Manager Chad Posten have a combined total of more than 20 years of automotive experience,” he said, “and our technicians receive service training each year at our factory school in Dallas.” Green Country Mitsubishi is a full-service dealership providing attentive service, a detail department, window tinting, after-market items such as lift kits for trucks, light bars, and more. They offer most major tire brands and can get any brand you desire within an hour. And each time you come in for service, you’ll get a free 27-point inspection telling you if your car has any area that

needs attention. “When you buy a new or used vehicle from Green Country Mitsubishi, your first oil change is on us,” said Jennings, “and

you can stop by for an oil change without an appointment any time and, generally, be in and out in half an hour.” The small town dealership does its best to accommodate customers by providing extended

store hours from 8 a.m. - 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday. “Mitsubishi has been recognized as the fastest growing auto maker for two years running,” Jennings said. “We feel you’ll find our pricing for all your automotive maintenance needs to be very competitive.” Jennings and the rest of the staff at Green Country Mitsubishi remain committed to the original mission of community and service. “We will continue the trend of being a big supporter of the community,” he said. “ In each one of the dealerships in our group we make a conscious decision to budget monies for the local school system and non profit agencies. Customer satisfaction remains our highest priority and our total staff is committed to this. Come in and find out for yourself what we’re all about.”

The idea came from an experience Andrus had while standing in line at the donut shop with his children one Saturday morning. “They were screaming over the last Elmo donut,” he recalled. “And I thought ‘there has to be an easier way.’” Friends since 2008, the pair met while working at Tulsa Community College. Andrus, a former teacher and social worker, and Marrs, Chief Information Officer at Expo Square, came up with the idea for what they call their “pizza of the morning” delivery service during their weekly meeting over burgers on August 31, 2014. “We have a business idea every other day,” Marrs said, “We said ‘let’s do it. It sounds fun.’” Donut Run officially launched in September 2015 and has built up quite a following, mostly through its Facebook page. Always evolving, the pair is constantly looking at new ways to make the business more convenient. They also hope to expand to other cities. Like many other sharing websites, Donut Run is only available online. Their company website is attractive and easy to use. Customers go online and enter their zip code and choose the type and number of donuts, along with location and time of delivery. Payment is via credit or debit card on a secured website. Andrus, Marrs, or one of their team members, will deliver the order from a nearby donut store. The cost is 79 cents per donut or $7.99 per dozen

with a delivery fee of $4.99. Customers can also add special requests and delivery instructions. Choices include a variety of donut types or an assorted dozen. Within a 24-hour notice, Donut Run will customize an order even adding personal notes. All Saturday deliveries come with free donut holes. Whether it’s one dozen or 12 dozen, Donut Run will deliver to your home or business. Marrs and Andrus continue to come up with new and innovative ways to expand their business. Marrs is working on a new, expanded web site and don’t be surprised if an unidentified flying donut is seen over Tulsa in the near future. The pair aims to make the first commercial delivery by drone in Tulsa. Visit Donut Run’s Facebook page for interesting facts about donuts or to learn more about the delivery service. Donut Run delivers six days a week from 6 to 10 a.m. but orders can be placed any time for next day delivery.

Skilled metal ware artisans in Mexico sand-cast each item by hand to ensure that each piece is a little different. “These are not only pretty, they are practical too,” she says. “They can go from oven to refrigerator and they always look good without any polishing.” Another customer favorite is the Scout line of bags, containers and accessories. Route 66 Blowout : History in the Making

Heart of Route 66 Auto Museum to open as crowd attendance grows

By Erica Ludwig Summer is usually a cause for celebration because school is out for a few months, but it carries a bigger meaning in Sapulpa. The Route 66 Blowout is returning for a 27th year of fun, food and of course, cars. The annual event will be held on Saturday, June 4, in the heart of downtown Sapulpa. The Route 66 Blowout is known around the country. Locals as well as visitors from other states plan their vacations around this event on historic Route 66. They come to see

one of the largest car and truck shows in the region with entertainment and activities for the whole family. There are over 300 cars to see as well as vintage tractors, crafts and museums. Thousands descend upon the town to socialize, shop and take in the sights. The blowout is truly a community affair, sponsored by local businesses, showcasing local artists and vendors, and coordinated by Sapulpa Main Street, with proceeds going toward beautification of the downtown district.

The Route 66 Blowout is one of the largest car and truck shows in the region with over 300 cars of all makes, years and models.

“I love being on Route 66 and just seeing people having a good time,” says Cindy McDonald, executive director. “They’re enjoying the cars, they’re seeing old friends that they have not seen in a long time or so, or maybe they only see each other down here once a year, the kids with their sno cones and running and having fun, it’s just a fun, family event. The event is well-known for its car show, showcasing classic and modern cars and trucks. “Last year we had over 300 cars,” said McDonald. “You want the show to grow, you want people to have fun. So to me that was kind of a big goal that we hit last year and we really want to hit it again this year. ” Entries will compete for bragging rights and prizes. Registration is available online or the morning of the event at 7 a.m. The Dragin Masters – a car club based in Sapulpa with roots dating back to 1958 – will judge the contest. The street will be filled with art, crafts and food. Sapulpa Arts will host their annual Route 66 Art Show and Sale, featuring local artists. The Historic museum will also be open that day. While taking in the automotive blast from the past,

The crowd size of the blowout continues to grow each year, last year bringing in a record year of over 20,000 people. be sure to check out the new Heart of Route 66 Auto Museum. This new addition offers vintage cars, an interactive children’s area and informative displays about Route 66 and the U.S. Military. As always, there is fun for the entire family at the Route 66 Blowout. If the children have energy to burn off, look for the Kids’ Zone, where there will be plenty of activities including face painting, games and inflatables. This section of the event will be held in the parking lot of the newly restored Creek County courthouse. This landmark of Sapulpa may seem similar to the Oklahoma state capitol because it was designed by the same architect. Come in and see the resemblances for yourself. The Route 66 Art Show, hosted by

Sapulpa Art, will be held on the lower level of the Creek County Courthouse. Car show registration is open until the day of the event. All forms are available online. The event begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 4. Festivities continue throughout the day until 4 p.m.

AA Penny Earned is A Penny Saved Five Money Lessons from Grandparents

By Jocelyn Wood Every year, my granddad would sit his grandkids down at the kitchen table and pour out a big jar full of coins he’d saved. We could have these coins but only after we sorted, divided equally and then rolled them. As little children, it felt like hours to complete this task, but the reward was a bag full of money. When grandparents talk, we ought to listen, especially when it comes to money. They’ve invested a lifetime earning, spending and saving money. They can teach us a thing or two about the value of a dollar and the importance of saving for a rainy day. Here’s five financial lessons learned from grandparents. Lesson one: Earn things. My granddad always said, “A penny earned is a penny saved.” He’d tell us,“If someone just gives you money, you’re more likely to go spend it. But if you have to earn it, you’re more likely to appreciate money and less likely to waste it.” Lesson two: Stay out of debt. Since their first paychecks, Mary and Jack Spinks have been careful how they spend the money they make.

“They did. Both of them worked. My grandfather worked on the railroad and my grandmother cooked. They lived on one salary, the other one went into the bank. And that was hard because they had five kids.” These early sacrifices eventually allowed the couple to buy a rental property and future prosperity. “It took a while to get there,”

she said. “But they did it.” Lesson four: It’s just stuff. “We don’t need everything we want,” said Isabel Melton, “Not by a long shot.” It’s all about perspective when applying these lessons. Once you put materialism in perspective, lessons two and

“We’ve been fortunate to always have a little money in our pocket,” Jack said. “But the only reason we have any money is because of early saving habits. We really tried not to go into debt other than for our house. That went for cars and everything else. And the reason we didn’t go into debt was because we waited until we had enough money to pay for it. You don’t have to have it tomorrow.” Lesson three: Make those sacrifices. Marlyn Woodruff wishes she would have followed her grandparents’ advice. “Not so much advice, because they didn’t “Earn your pennies” grandmas Isabel Melton, Mary Lou Starkey and Marlyn say,” she said. Woodruff say.

three become easier. Lesson five: Invest in yourself. “Examine yourself,” said Don Purkey. “Not everyone is fit for college.” The key to success is to find what you like or what you’re good at and educate yourself around it. “Learn to work and earn what you want,” he said. Isabel Melton also reminds us to put one foot in front of the other and keep going, because things will work out eventually. A special thanks to grandparents everywhere who pay forward the value of saving. Financially Fit is a column published by RCB Bank to help you gain knowledge on all things financial. Raise the Cigarette Tax Now to Save Health Care By Jimmy Leopard Health care in our state is on the brink of collapse. With impending medical reimbursement rate cuts coming to an already inadequately funded health care system, this summer may see the end of health care as we know it in Oklahoma. This is not a threat – it is reality. Oklahoma is on the verge of a statewide system failure that will hurt everyone, risk lives and damage the state. Hospital administrators and health care professionals have been warning about the deepening health care crisis for months. The state has experienced two revenue failures – months when it cannot pay its bills – during this fiscal year. In addition, with Oklahoma facing a $1.3 billion budget hole for next year, the agency that administers the state’s Medicaid program is planning for devastating provider rate cuts beginning June 1. Previous cuts have already taken a heavy toll. Additional cuts of any size will force physicians to turn away patients on Medicaid. With an expected cut of 25 percent, at least a dozen hospitals will shut down within a year. More than 90 percent of Oklahoma nursing homes will close, pushing at least 16,000 disabled and elderly Oklahomans onto the

Raising the cigarette tax now and rebalancing Medicaid will help lawmakers balance the state budget and reduce cuts to schools, prisons and health care.
