ASK THE MONEY MAVEN STRAIGHT-FORWARD, NO-NONSENSE TALK ABOUT YOUR MONEY
A Borrower Is A Slave To The Lender BY MELANIE HASTYGRANT
at the office. Financial plans are personalized to each person we meet. Having a financial plan and sticking to that plan is extremely important. Budgets vary household to household, but every house should have one written down. Money can leave your bank account quick if you don’t check up on it!
“I am never going to get out of debt!” Maybe you have caught yourself saying this. Perhaps out of frustration or the realization that credit is an easy way to purchase whatever you want the second you want it. That sense of instant gratification the moment you swipe that credit card. When used correctly it is a valuable tool. Honestly, many folks across the world can't afford to purchase a house or car without borrowing money to pay it back in manageable increments over time.. So what’s all the fuss about? Borrowing money is relatively easy to accomplish. The commercials on TV, with celebrities talking about it, are so convincing! Surely you can pay the minimum monthly payment at the end of the month. You reckon? Debt has a way of snowballing into something much larger if not watched and monitored closely. As a result, the borrower becomes a slave to whom or whoever the lender might be. When your financial future is on the line, here are a few things to keep in mind:
• Separate items into needs vs. wants. Wants and needs are two completely different categories. At times it can be easy to confuse the two. The newest technological gadgets, the latest fashion trends, entertainment and having dinner out with friends frequently, are more indulgences than basic living expenses. I remember the saying from the movie Fight Club, “We buy things we don’t need, with money we don’t have, to impress people we don’t like.” Try to purchase when you are in the right frame of thinking; not running on emotion. Are the things you’re buying just things, or do you actually need them to prosper? • Make the most of what you have. No matter your salary it must be managed and planned for wisely. We do this every day

• Don’t let history repeat itself. We are all human and we all have blunders now and again. Don’t be afraid to admit your shortcomings. The best thing to do is learn from it. Maybe you didn’t anticipate something to cost as much as it did when you first set out. Whatever the reasoning may be, try not to be so hard on yourself. Refer back to your plan, make adjustments were you can, and keep moving forward. Don’t be a slave to the lender. For more information go to www.waterstonewealth.com or call 918-272-1120. Invisalign for teens and adults is available to solve the problem of crooked or misaligned teeth. This removable appliance works as a clear alternative to braces. It aligns teeth while allowing the freedom to brush, floss, play sports or an instrument without discomfort. Thin porcelain shields called Lumineers® are also an option. ASK MELLA AT MY CHOICE REAL TIPS FOR SENIORS LIVING INDEPENDENTLY
How to Choose a Caregiver According to the Institute for Health & Aging at the University of California, over 41 million Americans have a chronic health condition that limits their daily activities in some way, and 12 million are unable to live independently. For those who have attained the age of 85, more than half are impaired and need longterm care – that is, the personal assistance that enables them to perform daily routines such as eating, bathing and dressing. Most people want to continue to live in their own homes for as long as possible. For those who are elderly and have disabilities, that may be possible only with outside help. Choosing a caregiver for a senior loved one is one of the most important decisions you can make. 1. Make sure the person you choose has a reputable background and has the experience you need. When you use an agency such as My Choice, you can be assured that the caregiver who comes to your home has been background checked, fingerprinted, their driving record checked and have a current clear TB test. Caregiving agencies in Oklahoma are licensed through the state and must carry insurance and an employee bond. 2. The caregiver should have qualified training. Caregiver agencies require ongoing training courses for their employees. It is important that the caregiver

understand your specific needs and has knowledge about your health issues. Some caregiver training indicates advanced levels of knowledge. Certified Nurse Assistant, Home Health Care Aide, Personal Care Assistant and Certified Companion Caregiver are programs that train caregivers. 3. Hiring an independent caregiver on your own can be overwhelming. You will need to do a background check and pay all payroll taxes for the wages a caregiver earns working for you. Also remember to call all their references! 4. If you decide you need some assistance, first, make a list of what you want done. Is it personal care, help with grooming or dressing? Do you want meals prepared and light housekeeping? Do you need transportation during the caregiving time to appointments or for errands? Is there a pet in your home? 5. After deciding how much help you want, take a moment to define what characteristics you would want in a caregiver. Should they be outgoing? Should they be religious? A great cook? Someone who could be your friend? 6. Are you choosing a caregiver for someone with dementia? The caregiver should have basic knowledge of techniques to help with the issues that can come with this disease. Caregivers can also help you recover from an injury that requires at home exercises.

With over 500,000 satisfied customers and counting, Rain Guard of Tulsa, Inc. has become one of Oklahoma’s largest
gutter companies, specializing in seamless gutters of all kinds. Bootenhoff believes in the value of quality work and quality employees. He only wants the best for his clients and that starts with the employment process. “It’s a feast or famine business,” he said. “We’re way up this time of year and then when it gets hot we drop a little,
Seasons may change, but Oklahoma weather is hardly predictable. The summer heat will fade and fall will roll in before you know it, bringing back school, football and of course rain. Rain Guard of Tulsa, Inc. provides all of your guttering needs and then some. The company is an exclusive dealer, the only ones in Oklahoma that provide maintenance-free gutters with their various products such as the Gutter Helmet®. You’ll never have to clean your gutter again. Owner David Bootenhoff entered into the guttering business in Oklahoma City over 35 years ago. “I really enjoyed it because you were outside all the time, every house was different and it was challenging. I had pride in the workmanship. I just liked it,” he said. The service and management team of Rain Guard of Tulsa, Inc. The Colorado
it goes up and down with the weather and seasons. It’s hard to find people who want to do physical labor nowadays.” Rain Guard doesn’t just do gutters. They are a full service company that also produces copper work from their own metal shop. They have been designing, fabricating, and installing beautiful copper accessories such as cupolas, finials and chimney caps since 1982. They can take one of their own designs or a client original from concept to completion, making dreams a reality. “It’s the satisfaction in doing some of Tulsa’s future historic homes,” David said. “And the fact that I haven’t had to work for somebody for over 35 years now. I’ve been my own boss.” Rain Guard has been in the Tulsa area for 35 years now and their core values are as strong as ever. From reputation to stability to workmanship to convenience, quality is their goal. “It’s just like any craft, whether you’re a homebuilder
or you’re doing something like this, people are the core,” said David. “Have good employees in every part of the job. The key to any business is your employees. Take pride in your workmanship. That’s going away too fast. People are the key to success in any business.” Rain Guard’s number one goal is to provide customers with the highest quality products while maintaining a highly professional level of service at an affordable price. The company has won multiple Super Service awards with Angie’s List. They are dedicated to providing customers with quality products and services to ensure that every customer is 100% satisfied. Pat worked as a subcontractor in San Antonio, Texas, learning the business from a contractor at the time. “I was fortunate enough to be mechanical by nature,” he said. ““It’s not a guy with a garden hose and a tank of gas anymore. There are AC units with over 700 speeds and computer boards built into them. The cost of energy is the cost of the equipment, really.” The cost is about to get much greater. According to experts, the refrigerant that is in 90% of the air conditioning units in houses today will be banned in the United States in the year 2020. “I would advise people to go ahead and consider buying a new unit now,” said Pat. “It’s really a sticker shock to people now and they don’t plan on it. vehicle, but they don’t plan on replacing their heating and air unit. But in three and a half years, if they’re having a major breakdown they’re going to have to. If they wait until they have to, they will have less choice and more expense.” Pat says the best time to buy new HVAC equipment is October through December as manufacturers aim to empty their warehouses. “You can always make your best deal when no one else is buying. If you wait, you’ll get the highest price and the least amount of service,” he says. A great way to save money and possibly your unit is through regular maintenance. AC units will typically run whether or not you do routine maintenance, but they will burn more electricity, wear out faster and cost more money at the end. Maintaining equipment that was installed properly should guarantee to last the way it was designed for, about 10-15 years life expectancy. Regular maintenance is as simple as getting your AC checked every spring. This allows you to develop a relationship with a company you trust before an emergency callout happens. The team at Superior Service’s mission is the customer’s experience, not just selling equipment. “The name of the company
was not designed by accident. It was designed as our mission statement. We are human, we do make mistakes, but we handle that mistake in how the customer is served.” Superior Service provides each customer with 24/7 emergency service, courtesy calls within 30-45 minutes of arrival at your location, care service checkups and professional and courteous technicians who put your satisfaction at top priority. “What’s most rewarding about this business is being able to help friends and neighbors in a time of need when its something specialized, that not everybody knows how to do,” said Pat. “It’s like as cars have gotten more high tech, so have HVACS.” Don’t wait until your AC breaks down in the middle of summer to get it fixed. Call Superior Service now to schedule a routine maintenance check.

A Classical Instrument That Still Knows How to Rock The Midwest Harp Festival features four concerts open to the public in July.
By Deanna Rebro
Since Ancient Egypt, the harp has played a significant role in all genres of music including Celtic, Classical, Bluegrass, Country, Rock/Pop, Show Tunes, Vocals, Jazz and even Heavy Metal. The 2016 Midwest Harp Festival celebrates this versatile instrument and brings together 35 of the best performers in the region. The week-long festival, running July 17-23, features four public concerts. Lorelei Kaiser Barton, creator and director of the festival, has watched the event grow from several harpists playing in her home in 1998 to a highly respected and anticipated event that draws professionals, students and music lovers to the University of Tulsa Lorton Performing Arts Center. “The Harp Festival is true immersion into the spirit of the harp,” says Lorelei. Harpists ages nine and up at various skill levels will have the opportunity to participate in workshops, harp ensembles and competitions. Featured artists for this year’s festival are: Mary Bircher of the Omaha Symphony,
Faye Seeman, Professor of Music at Wheaton College and Northern Illinois University; Elizabeth Richter, Professor of Music at Ball State University; Linda Paul, local professional pop/jazz harpist and festival adjunct instructor, and the Felice Pomeranz Jazz Quartet. Ms. Pomeranz is Associate Professor of Harp at Berklee College of Music in Boston and a faculty member of The Boston Conservatory. For the first time within the solo competition, the festival will include the Salzedo Competition, sponsored by Suzann Davids. On Monday, July 18 at 7:30 p.m. in the Gussman Auditorium, the opening faculty concert will feature the festival’s harp faculty. There is no charge, but donations are appreciated. Tuesday, July 19 at 7:30 p.m. is the Solo Competition Winners Recital in the Meinig Recital Hall. The competition, held earlier in the day, is broken down by skill levels in five divisions. This is also open to the public. The Felice Pomeranz Jazz Quartet will perform on
Thursday, July 21 at 7:30 p.m. in the Gussman Auditorium. Ms. Pomeranz and Director of the Berklee Global Jazz Institute, sax player Marco Pignataro join with Tulsa’s jazz rhythm players, bassist Jim Bates and drummer Tony Yohe. Admission is $7.00 for adults. Seniors 65 and up and children 5 and under are $5.00. The final show Harpists take a break from practicing for the Midwest Harp Festival. will be Saturday, July 23 at 11:00 a.m. in the The Adjunct Professor the Tulsa Community Gussman Auditorium. They will analyze the damages and needs to restore your carpet, fabric or hard surfaces and provide you with guides to gently, but effectively, initiate their deep-cleaning solutions. Will Hooks is employed by DMI and is an expert in home and business restoration services. Will was attending Gadsden State University when he attended a job fair and met a U.S. Army recruiter. Will was impressed and decided the U.S. Army was calling him. He enlisted with every intention of making the Army a career for the next next 25 years. While in the Army, Will received training in heating, ventilation, air conditioning, earned his commercial drivers license, was HASMAT certified and qualified on virtually all military weapons. While serving a 15 month tour in Iraq, Will’s military occupation specialty was 92F, a petroleum supply specialist. He supervised the reception, storage and shipping of petroleum fuel for the U.S. Army. Will’s operation was a prime target of the enemy and was frequently the target of everything from IEDs to small-arms fire. “My tour in Iraq was the roughest 15 months of my life,” says Will.

Master Your Wellness and Beauty shift in the business has come with the addition of a new specialty called Metabolic Medicine. To the lay person, Metabolic Medicine is usually referred to as Wellness Medicine or something similar. To Dr. Masters, Metabolic Medicine has been an answer for the hundreds of patients that come in saying, “I’m not sick. I just don’t feel good”. Whether it is fatigue, lack of energy, poor sleep, or the inability to lose weight, Metabolic Medicine has the answer. “This is NOT Dr. Oz type medicine,” Dr. Masters is quick to say. “I am NOT some health nut just saying, ‘Here, take this it is supposed to be good for you’. Metabolic Medicine will really and truly make you feel better.” Dr. Masters can definitely back up her statement. She has spent the past 4 years working on her Master’s Degree in Metabolic and Nutritional
Medicine. Since there is no real training program for Metabolic Medicine, many Medical schools are actually offering graduate degrees in this type of medicine, often referred to as Metabolic & Nutritional Medicine, dedicated to keeping the human body healthy and functioning optimally. In other words, it focuses on preventing symptoms and disease before they can even get started. Masters goes on to explain that, while in Traditional Medicine we are taught to treat symptoms and disease after the fact, the typical medical school curriculum offers very little teaching to doctors on how to help keep their patients healthy. How well is your body turning the food you eat into energy? How well is your liver detoxifying the world you are exposed to on a daily basis? Are GI bacteria doing what they are supposed to and keeping you strong and healthy or has bad bacteria or yeast taken over? Is
the stress you are exposed to in your daily life being adequately dealt with or have chronically elevated stress hormones left you at risk for obesity, heart disease and diabetes? These are just a few of the questions a Metabolic Medicine work-up will answer. Dr. Masters is quick to point out that everything offered or recommended at MastersMD is evidenced-based. Meaning there are scientific studies to back up her recommendations. “If it has not been studied, then I don’t include it in my recommendations.” Patients are continually surprised to learn just simple little facts about the human body and once she reviews their labs with them and helps show them how it all fits together they are quick to see that a lot of what she recommends is simply common sense. For instance, she preaches treating the CAUSE of an ailment rather than putting the proverbial “band aide” on the SYMPTOMS.”
Chocolate Chip to Strawberry Banana, there is something for everyone. The staff is genuinely enthusiastic because the products of Brookside Nutrition have changed their lives, they’re passionate about making you feel loved and accepted for where you are right now. “You’re not just getting products, you’re getting a heartbeat that comes with the products,” said Rolison. “Because anybody can buy some protein or a fat burner, but they aren’t going to get somebody that’s going to tell them how to use it properly and follow up with them and keep them accountable. You really do

continued from page 1 A Metabolic Medicine work up can be huge and allencompassing or it can be as simple as making sure your hormones are balanced. Since hormones have a lot to do with how we feel, they are the logical starting point for many patients. Estrogen, Progesterone and Testosterone are not just the sex hormones, they are the body’s anabolic or ‘healing and repair’ hormones. The body’s catabolic or ‘wear and tear’ hormone is Cortisol. As we age our healing and repair hormones go down dramatically, but the wear and tear hormone does not. Too much wear and tear and not enough healing and repair is more commonly known as good, old-fashioned AGING. Making sure your hormones are balanced and optimized slows the aging process. “Besides that,” Dr. Masters is quick to point out, “you will just feel better, a lot better.” If you could use some help with: energy level, stamina,
Power Up Your Nutrition energy. “We want to promote a fun, healthy active lifestyle,” said Owner Kaslin Salley. “We do that by wellness coaching and community and all of the things included with that.” Upbeat, positive music and an enthusiastic staff from the moment you enter the nutrition club will greet you. Salley and co-owner Alex Rolison are among the fresh faces you’ll see looking to serve you with a shake and a smile. The smoothie and juice bar offers a wide variety of flavors so just about anything you name, they can create. From Fruity Pebbles to Mint

Each shake and tea does something different because every person’s body is different. The weight management shakes are packed with tons of nutrients without all the calories and sugar. The teas give you energy and actually burn about 100 calories per serving. “It’s like cardio in a cup,” said Salley. “We provide the balance for your body. We provide the optimum nutrition for your
body. The shake will provide that nutrition whether you need to lose weight or gain weight.” This nutrition club has only been in Brookside for a few months, but it’s made a lasting impression. Rolison and Salley admit they serve around 100 people each day. Their goal is to help people see that total nutrition is possible without all the stress and guesswork. “Try it before you buy it,” said Rolison. “You can come in and try it without having to buy a bunch of products. Why I Just W
Follow Jesus
Learning more about Him to become more like Him.
By A Jesus Follower
Years ago while I was in the military, on one very dark night, I was driving a noisy Jeep on a runway with no person in sight in any direction. I heard a loud commanding voice say “STOP” and I immediately stopped the Jeep. As I was looking around wondering who said stop, a fast, tree top flying, spy plane that you could not hear before it was past you, landed where my Jeep would have been. That voice saved my life. Over 8 years later, God revealed that it was His voice that commanded me to stop and saved my life. God can reveal Himself to us. One of the reasons I follow Jesus is because Jesus also can “REVEAL”1 God to us. A few years later, I was taking a biblical Greek course at the university and the big test at the end of the year involved translating a passage from greek and describing the parts of speech of each word. The passage was to be from the

gospel of John or the epistles of John and I knew I did not know greek that well. I asked God in Jesus’ name for help. God led me to the exact five verses on the test out of a possible 1,010 verses. I knew I had heard God and heard Him correctly. A few months later when God told me to “JUST FOLLOW JESUS”, I knew again it was God. It has been a learning process over the subsequent years to just follow Jesus and I am still learning. In addition to being obedient to God, I follow Jesus because He tells the truth and is the truth and Jesus tells us the only way to God “IS THROUGH ME”2. Jesus tells us “IF YOU OBEY MY TEACHING AND KNOW THE TRUTH... THE TRUTH WILL SET YOU FREE”3, which includes being set free from manmade religious teachings. I also follow Jesus because He said “I AM THE SON OF GOD”4 and that God told Jesus what “TO

Broken Arrow native Brittany Watts wins NPC Jr. Nationals Championship in Charleston, advances towards Olympia dreams.
By Erica Ludwig Dreams wouldn’t matter as much without the fight to make them a reality. The best things in life, like a good workout, usually require some extra blood, sweat and tears. Some see bodybuilding as just modeling or competitions to show how much weight you can lift. To Broken Arrow native Brittany Watts, it’s a master-class on personal limits and growth. It’s not just a sport, but a lifestyle. At just 5’3”, the 27 year old has just won the National Physique Committee Jr. Nationals Championship in

Charleston, bringing her one step closer to her dreams of worldrenowned competitions such as the Arnolds. When it comes to training, Brittany’s motto is “be a savage”: to set a goal, work hard towards it and remain dedicated. She does this with the help of her coach, Andy Snyder, and the support of parents, Pastors Billy Joe and Theresa Watts. “I go to the gym twice a day,” she says. “It’s a very strict life. It’s not a two-life type of thing. You have to be sold out with working out and eating right. I spend between 30 and 40 hours per week in the gym. I love it, that’s my therapy.” Brittany started to take an interest in bodybuilding and physique competitions back in 2012 from friend Tanje Brewer, who was her Zumba instructor at the time. Since then, Brittany has put in whatever work necessary to reach her goals. “I’ve learned in this process that I’m a fighter,” she said. “I have so much fight in me now that I don’t think anything less than the best for myself. I only see myself

Some may want to know my name or where I go to church, etc but I am not important, Jesus is the one who is important and His words and actions. going the furthest possible. The Olympia, the Arnolds, those are the places I want to go. You don’t get there by not working hard.” The Broken Arrow native is currently training for the International Federation of Bodybuilding Pro to be held in Fort Lauderdale in December. The IFBB Pro consists of some of the best in the sport, and guarantees those who win a bid to the Olympia, otherwise known as “the superbowl of bodybuilding”. Win or lose, Brittany is determined to keep pressing forward and to never give up. She sees improvement and growth as victories all their own. “You can only get better,” she said. “I think anybody that thinks they want to be in this sport should try it at least once. It takes a lot of strength to train and compete. A lot of people start and don’t finish. Doing this has made me a better adult, a better person and a better daughter. You don’t just start something, show up and then quit over half of the way through. This makes you responsible for what you eat, what you drink. Like anything else, you can’t put in half the effort. It’s like being a Christian and going to church, you have to be linked up and surrounded by the right people.” Brittany attributes her success to hard work and the people who have helped her be the person she is today. TThink You Can Outsmart a Scammer? Tips on avoiding internet spams and scams
By Kyle Head
There are 3.17 billion internet users worldwide. To put that into perspective, there are around 323 million people living in the United States, so if everyone in the U.S. used the internet that would be less than ten percent of internet users worldwide. The internet is a marvelous invention, useful for finding information quickly, connecting with friends and family, watching videos and so much more. But with the good comes the bad - phishers. Think you can outsmart a scammer? In 2014 the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center tallied nearly 270 thousand complaints, totaling more than $800 million in losses. To help protect yourself, you first need to understand what you are dealing with. So what exactly is phishing? Phishing is a social engineering technique by which an attacker imitates a credible source in an attempt to fool a victim into providing personal information or to perform an action, like clicking on a link.

“People tend to be too trusting regarding websites and providing their personal information online or in emails,” says Denise Meyer, AVP Fraud. Increase your personal safety with the following three-step checklist: 1. Going to websites Look for https:// or the lock symbol at the beginning of the web address. The “s” at the end of http means that the site has added security. A word of caution: Scammers can and do set up false sites with https://. 2. Entering information online. Before you provide any information online, practice due diligence on merchants to verify they are registered and legitimate companies. Google search companies and check with places such as the Better Business Bureau to research their registration details and service history. 3.Clicking email links. Before you click, hover over the link. Does the link match the company’s official site address? For example, when you hover over a link to RCB Bank’s website it should look like

Her first book, “The

This fun, non-intimidating guide is the first garden book to address a demographic that cares about the environment and wants to know where their food comes from. “Anyone can be a gardener,” Dee writes. Whether you want to farm your balcony or the backyard, it’s about knowing the consequences of actions. “you just have to know a few key things to do and some things not to do,” Dee said. Dee teaches which veggies give the most return on investment and effort, how
