Guaranty Abstract Expands Residential Closing Center The company is streamlining the abstracting title insurance and closing services in Tulsa by consolidating into one location. By Christopher Davis A leader in abstracting title insurance and closing services, Guaranty Abstract Company has expanded and reorganized its Yale office to create Tulsa’s residential closing center at KingsPointe Village. Senior Vice President Heath Spiegel explains that the reorganization comes at a perfect time for the company. “We’ve been in the process of digitizing records and
archives, which has opened up a lot of space at our Yale office,” he says. A recent reorganization increased the number of offices and refreshed the décor. “Now, with the extra space we’ve gained, we have room to bring over our midtown office staff.” Consolidating the closer teams from the midtown and Yale branch-

Kitchen Causing You Pain? Take May Is National Charge with Premium Cabinets Foster Care Month Premium Cabinets offers sage advice and cost effective packages for your kitchen remodel.
Choices for Life Foster Care honors its foster parents this month and calls attention to the need for more families to foster therapeutic foster children.
By Christopher Davis As summer heats up, homeowners start to get serious about acting on their winter dreams of remodeling. Factors that determine whether or not these projects come to fruition are typically related to issues like ability and tools (if one is prone to the DIY approach) or money. Fortunately, for homeowners with “kitchen” jotted down on their remodel list, Premium Cabinets can cut cost without sacrificing quality. Their recipe for success involves providing just the right amount of support to empower owners to run their own project. “Some people want to be their own general contractor,” says Gary Gullic, owner of Premium Cabinets. “They just need some help.” Gullic and his crew at Premium Cabinets excel at walking clients through a step by step process that begins with a simple conversation about design and

The Million Dollar Question: Do You Have Enough Money To Retire? rental income, and pensions. If the amount you anticipate from these sources is equal to or more than what your expenses are then you are in shape. If not, the remainder will come from what you save in your 401k’s, IRA’s, Roth’s, etc.. Now multiply the number of your yearly gap by 25. That should give you the amount of savings you need so that you can draw the recommended 4% annually from your investments.
BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT
It’s not a one size fits all answer. Do you really need $1 million to retire? Or is it $2 million for a retired couple? Or is it 10 times your current annual salary? All of these are nice, neat figures you might have heard. The bottom line is it boils down to what your expenses are and what your retirement income sources will be. The keys are to retire with as little debt as possible by paying off your mortgage, vehicle loans, and other debt such as boats and credit cards and to save as much as possible by contributing to retirement plans, savings, and other sources of income. To get started, figure out approximately how much you currently spend on an annual basis. Don’t forget food, credit card bills, insurance, and vacations. Check your numbers against your current “bring home” pay. If your expense numbers are significantly higher than your budget and you don’t save anything every month, you may have underestimated your actual expenses. It is very common for people to underestimate expenses and overestimate their investment returns. Surprisingly, when folks come in to my office and bring me a list of their expenses, the most common budget item left off is food. Since we would like for you to continue to eat during retirement, please don’t forget to budget for food. Next, subtract the expenses you don’t plan to have

during retirement (mortgage payment, expenses for kids at home, college expenses, etc.). Finally, add back in money for health care. If you retire before age 65, when Medicare will kick in, and your company doesn’t continue paying for health insurance, you will need to do a little research to figure out how much that will cost . Remember that for most folks, health care costs go up as you age. We typically estimate that the average retiree spends about 75-85% of their pre-retirement income in retirement to sustain their lifestyle. However, that is just a rule of thumb. You may not be average. Do your research and then do the math to figure out how much retirement savings you will need. Here’s how to figure it. Add up all the income you anticipate receiving from retirement sources. This should include social security,
For example, let’s say your expenses are $4000 per month to keep yourself fed, clothed, housed, and living the retirement lifestyle that you want. You have $1500 from Social Security and $1000 from a pension for a total of $2500 per month. That results in a shortfall of $1500 per month, or $18,000 per year. $18,000 x 25 = $450,000. That’s the amount you will need in your savings for retirement (401k, IRAs, Roth’s, etc.) to close the gap. Now, these are estimates. You’re probably not “normal” or average. Do some figuring and research. If you need our help, give us a call. We can help. For more information go to www.Waterstonewealth.com. Are You Prepared for a Dental Emergency? Tips on what to do in case of a dental emergency. By Steve White, D.D.S Dental emergencies occur at the most inconvenient times. They can range from minor aggravations, to mild discomfort, to major pain and swelling. We will discuss some of the most common problems and what you should do when they occur. Abscessed teeth occur after the “nerve” of the tooth has undergone a dying process. Teeth have an inner space called the pulp chamber which contains soft tissue, connective tissue, blood vessels and nerve fibers, commonly known as the “nerve” of the tooth. This tissue can be damaged due to trauma or the invasion of tooth decay. It undergoes a dying process that results in the formation of an abscess at the root end of the tooth. This normally causes deep, throbbing pain or significant swelling in the area.
Treatment initially is to relieve swelling or pressure by establishing drainage of the abscess and use of antibiotic therapy. Comprehensive treatment involves root canal therapy to save the tooth or extraction, if the tooth is not restorable. There are various options for replacing missing teeth which include implants, fixed bridges, and removable partials. Young children often have accidents that damage the front teeth. You can use cold compresses and ice packs to control bleeding and pain. Your dentist can evaluate the damage and present options for treatment depending on the amount of damage, the child’s age (dental development), and aesthetic concerns. If a permanent tooth is completely knocked out, do not wash or scrub it ; place it in a small container of milk and get to a dentist ASAP. These teeth can often be replanted in the mouth if the person is seen soon enough. Anytime there has been a traumatic injury, you should get to the dental office or emergency room immediately. Soft tissue wounds are best treated early on and it is essential to determine if there are fractures, either of the teeth or jaws, so appropriate treatment can be started. You bite down on something and your tooth cracks ; often this occurs because the tooth is weakened by decay or an old filling. Regardless of the cause, you should get to the dentist to evaluate and fix the problem. Basically, how quickly you do this depends on how badly it hurts when the fracture occurs. You may have no pain, but, you could also have severe pain if the “nerve” is directly exposed. Early evaluation and treatment alleviates the pain and reduces the chances of more severe problems occurring if treatment is delayed.
Ultimately, we want to save our teeth whenever possible. Regular check-ups will help you avoid many problems. Our office is dedicated to providing exceptional dental care and cosmetic services. Treatments include general and sedation dentistry, snore guards, veneers, whitening, dental implants, root canals, clear braces; TMJ and sleep apnea treatments. We offer QDP, Quality Dental Plan, to help make your dentistry needs more affordable; and accept most insurance plans. This Ad Sponsored By:

Your Hometown Medical Spa BA Med Spa & Weight Loss Center has served Broken Arrow residents with their wellness and beauty needs for the past five years. By Sheryl Sowell Medical spas combine the services of a medical clinic and a day spa, and are becoming increasingly popular across the country. When choosing a medical spa for services, it is important to ask a few questions first. Is the business supervised by a certified medical physician? Is the staff trained and certified? Are they friendly and make you feel comfortable and at ease? What type of equipment is used? Will the treatments you receive provide the results you want, and how long will it take? The friendly, experienced and knowledgeable team at BA Med Spa & Weight Loss Center is happy to answer your questions. Since 2010, BA Med Spa has been one of Tulsa’s premiere med spas. Managing partner Malissa Spacek co-founded BA Med Spa with Dr. James Campbell, medical supervisor and onsite medical director. Malissa leads an experienced team of professionals who are certified, licensed and trained to provide a variety of health and wellness and cosmetic treatments. “Our highly trained staff provides services that will help you feel and look healthy, confident and attractive. We explain the treatments thoroughly to each patient and give them realistic guidelines of what results to expect, and when they can expect them,” says Malissa. “In addition, all of our equipment, including lasers, Ultherapy

Quality Family Entertainment for Hard Earned Dollars
69th year for Will Rogers Stampede Rodeo By Jim Butcher It wasn’t too long ago when ever boy in America wanted to grow up and be a cowboy. And while there aren’t too many cowboy and western movies being produced, that dream still exists in some and one of the ways ‘we get an inside look at some aspects of that way of life” is the rodeo. Rodeos were based on the skills required by working cowboys, in what today is the western United States, western Canada, and northern Mexico. Today it is a sporting event that involves horses and other livestock, designed to test the skill and speed of the cowboys and cowgirls. American style professional rodeos generally comprise the following events: tie-down roping, team roping, steer wrestling, saddle bronc riding, bareback bronc riding, bull riding and barrel racing. The events are divided into two basic categories: the rough stock events and the timed events. Depending on sanctioning organization and region, other events such as breakaway roping, goat tying, or pole bending may also be a part of some rodeos. In Oklahoma rodeos have been and continue to be a most important part of life and the forthcoming Will Rogers Stam-
pede Rodeo in Claremore is one of the biggest and best, having been named the 2014 PRCA Rodeo of the Year. The 69th edition is scheduled for Memorial Weekend – May 22 - 24 – with something for the entire family, says Dave Petty,
chairman of this year’s event, and who grew up in Ponca City and Osage County with the cowboy way of life in his blood. He readily admits riding a horse, learning to rope at a very early age, and competing in riding bulls and roping was a great way to grow
Legendary Mexican rope artist Tomas Garcilazo will be performing at the 69th annual Will Rogers Stampede Rodeo in Claremore May 22-24.
up and appreciate this way of life. Very few today can claim that they were taught how to rope by a legend. At a very early age David learned from Mike Sokoll, a veteran 101 Ranch Rodeo performer, who lived in Ponca City and was 88 years old, at the time, Sokoll was with the original 101 Ranch Wild West Show from 1909-1915. David is a safety specialist for an Oklahoma natural gas gathering and processing company, and he owns a cow-calf operation north of Chelsea and raises quarters horses. He admits he “married into” the Will Rogers Stampede Association, as his wife’s grandparents were charter members of the original Round Up Club. His commitment to preserving the heritage of this nearly 69-year-old event goes well behind that of a typical in-law. “This is the largest running event in Rogers County next to Will Rogers Days,” he points out. “And I want to help keep that tradition going.” Petty believes that the rodeo offers high quality, family entertainment at a fair price. “You work hard for your money and you need to get your dollar’s worth.” He notes that “where else can you get a night of great family entertainment, fun for the whole family...
two adults and two children for only $35? You can’t beat it. And we offer several good package deals. Best to check our website – willrogersstampede.com – and get an overview of the event. We also have a Facebook page.” Celebrating God and country is another important aspect of this rodeo, Petty said. “On Sunday we provide Cowboy Church Services and those who attend can get into the rodeo on Sunday at no charge.” One of the key acts is Tomas Garcilazo is a native of Mexico, where he began learning “Floreo de Reata” (rope artistry) at a very early age, as he was being raised in his family tradition and heritage of La Charreria. This richly developed skill is performed by Charros, who take extreme pride in their horsemanship and roping abilities. “I’m sure the whole family will enjoy watching Tomas’ artistry... I do very much,” Petty said. Having been a part of this particular event for many years, “I know that it requires at lot of hard work by a lot of volunteers. And I know you will enjoy if you attend. Let’s make this our greatest year ever.”

Is Your Vehicle Making Funny Noises? Certified Mechanics Car Care Center has provided personalized automotive repair services for over 30 years. By Duane Blankenship
Certified Mechanics Car Care Center owner and operator John Mason delivers high quality automotive workmanship at fair, competitive prices.
Certified Mechanics Car Care Center is located in historic Florence Park, is owned and operated by John Mason, and has served Tulsans for the past 31 years. They have been at their current location, one block west of Harvard on 21st Street, for 25 years. John’s employee, ASE Certified Advanced Level Specialist Wayne Wilson, has been with Certified Mechanics for 20 years. Together, John and Wayne represent decades of automotive experience and maintain the highest level of integrity as they provide personalized automotive repair and services for your American and Asian cars, SUVs, minivans and trucks. “The function of an engine is, basically, the same as it’s always been,” says John. “The difference in providing automotive service today is that so often the problems are unique to specific makes and models.” Diagnosing an engine problem today requires inspection and testing with specialized equipment by a skilled professional who
every 5,000 to 10,000 miles, depending upon the manufacturer. “We use only manufacturer recommended motor oils, which is critical in today’s variable valve timing engines to maintain optimum performance,” says John. John and Wayne work hard to keep each customer informed and involved about the repair of their vehicle and always speak candidly about the services needed. Certified Mechanics Car Care is a full-service shop and has done business with the same quality parts suppliers for decades. They have earned a reputation for delivering high quality workmanship at fair, competitive prices.
understands what tests need to be performed, plus the knowledge to interpret the results and make the proper diagnosis and repair. “We believe excellent customer communication is the key to making a successful repair. Wayne and I always do our best to fully explain the cause of the issue to the customer and then offer our recommended symptom-based service that will eliminate the problem.” If a vehicle has more than one issue needing attention, but the customer elects not to have them all done at once, Certified Mechanics prioritizes the recommended repairs and works with the customer to complete the services to fit their time frame. All auto manufacturer recommended maintenance services are performed by Certified Mechanics Car Care Center, and John can tell you the exact services and frequency recommended for your specific vehicle. The most recurring services for newer cars are changing the oil and rotating the tires, customarily

Pain-Free Living Is a Possibility
By Sheryl Sowell For anyone who has experienced a pulled muscle or a pinched nerve, you know how painful it can be. Small tasks suddenly seem monumental, and just getting through each day becomes a struggle. For thousands of Oklahomans, this life is a reality. Many don’t even go to see a doctor for fear of surgery or a lengthy and expensive treatment program. But, you don’t have to live your life in constant pain. Recent spinal decompression patient Dennis Barnes says, “Don’t suffer in pain needlessly!” The staff at Spinal Decompression of Oklahoma may be able to help you live pain free, but you will never know until you give them a call. For patient Dennis Barnes, life had gotten increasingly difficult. He suspected that his pain was from a back injury he experienced in the 70s. The injury was severe enough to require surgery, but with surgery and physical therapy, Dennis was feeling pretty good. He just took care when lifting heavy items and along with a walking program, kept himself in good health. He thought his days of back pain were over.
Unfortunately, in April of 2010, the pain returned with a vengeance. Dennis was experiencing severe pain daily and thought that another back surgery was in his future – a thought that he was not looking forward to. Then, while reading a news article about another individual with severe back pain who had found relief, Dennis decided that it was worth giving the doctor a call. Dr. Gary Fortner, with Spinal Decompression of Oklahoma, did X-rays and an MRI of Dennis’s back and found four discs that had areas of concern. “I was hurting so badly at this point I couldn’t sit still, couldn’t stand, couldn’t sleep – my entire life revolved around this pain I was experiencing,” explains Dennis. “I knew I didn’t want to go through surgery again, so I decided to give this a try. After meeting Dr. Fortner, I really felt like I could believe in him and trust him, so when he said he could help me, I decided to give it a try.” Spinal decompression is the perfect alternative to surgery for a great number of people. And the treatment is quick and easy.
Dennis says that he actually looked forward to his appointments. In his case, he started out with 5 minutes of ultrasound for relaxing the deep muscle tissue and then lying down on hot moist towels for approximately 15 minutes. That was one of his favorite parts. Next, a special belt and vest are placed on the patient, the patient boards the Spina machine standing and then the machine tilts you to where you are lying down. The vest is used to keep the upper body stationary as the belt will allow a gentle and precise pull at the exact tension and angle as their doctor prescribes. This treatment allows injured discs to get fluid and circulation to the damaged areas. Finally, ice packs and e-stim are placed on the injured area to ease discomfort. “I don’t completely understand the procedure, but I do know that it worked,” he says. After eight visits, Dennis began to feel a tremendous difference. Within two months, Dennis was completely pain free, without the expense and trauma of surgery. “My quality of life is wonderful again, and I feel like I can live my life the way I want

Dennis Barnes is a happy, pain-free patient of Spinal Decompression of Oklahoma. to,” says Dennis. “It has been amazing the difference Dr. Fortner has made in my life. I just want everyone out there that is experiencing back pain to give Spinal Decompression of Oklahoma a try. Sometimes surgery is necessary, but if you can get the pain relief you want without going under the knife, isn’t that much better?” In Dennis’s case, his insurance covered most of the expense for treatments, but a quick phone call to (918) 3411250, and they can tell you exactly what is covered and what to expect. No surprises! Spinal Decompression of Oklahoma is located at 1408 N. Florence Ave in Claremore. As for Dennis, he has never
regretted his decision to give this alternative treatment a try. “I am still careful when I lift heavy items, but I can do pretty much anything I want pain free. That is the best part,” says Dennis. “And I have been able to resume my daily walks! Life is great again and most important, I get to live it without pain.”

Before You Step onto the Dealership Floor, Prepare “Financially Fit” is a column published by RCB Bank to help you gain knowledge on all things financial.
By Todd Ward, RCB Bank, VP Loans Buying a new or used car can be intimidating even if you’ve done it before, it can still be a whirlwind of negotiations and paperwork. For most people, buying a car is the second largest purchase they will make in their lifetime. A little preparation before you step onto the dealership floor may improve your car buying experience. Get preapproved. If you know the financial institution you will be using to finance your next car, get preapproved for a loan so you know what is within your budget. Car shopping is less complicated when you know your maximum purchase price. It’s easy to get blinded by a shiny new car and all the extras only to find it’s out of your budget. When you have your financing approved, you can focus on other aspects of purchasing a car like the dealership and car reviews to ensure the best deal.
Do your homework. There are a number of websites to research the dependability and safety of cars. Find out what similar cars are selling for in your area. Then, compare your potential purchase to its value on websites such as NADA.com. Trade in your car. If you will be trading in your car, know the payoff amount and ensure the new car dealer will pay off your loan in full. Research the value of your trade-in to know what you should expect before going into the dealership. Think through term limits. An important, and often overlooked factor in auto financing, is the loan term. The loan term is the number of months your new car will be financed. Many dealerships will finance a car for seven or even eight years. This may look good on paper but you must think long term. Before you sign, ask yourself, “will I own this
Todd Ward and Taylor Summers. car for seven or eight years?” and “will the car’s value still match my loan payoff?” People forget to ask these questions before they purchase and some end up upside down in their car. This means their loan payoff is more than the car is worth and they have negative equity. While financing a longer term may allow you to buy a more expensive car at a lower monthly payment, you will also pay more interest on long-term loans. Always compare the potential outcome and consider what is best for your future car buying experiences.
You are the customer. You decide where to finance your car, not the dealership. While dealerships may have a competitive rate or loan term, ask yourself some questions. Does the dealership have my best interest in mind? If I have problems with my loan, who will I call for help? Does a large out of state bank know me better than my local community bank? You hold the cards when it comes to where you finance your vehicle, so do what feels comfortable to you. For more Financially Fit articles, go to RCBbank.com/

Gentlemen, Don’t Forget Mother’s Day J. David Jewelry offers unique jewelry selections perfect for special gift-giving occasions.
By Duane Blankenship
Operating from their J. David Jewelry store in Broken Arrow for more than 20 years, store founders Joel and Kendra Wiland opened a second location in Tulsa in May of last year. You’ll find the new J. David Jewelry branch just east of Memorial on 101st Street. The design of the new showroom is open, inviting and easy to navigate from one beautifully designed display case to the next. Landon Wiland, J. David marketing director (and Joel and Kendra’s son), says, “There are no walls, corners or obstacles to stop you as you travel from case to case through the showroom. The back of the showroom has a huge window allowing visitors to observe J. David’s skilled artisans as they create custom jewelry pieces for customers. With Mother’s Day just around the corner, this is a great time to visit either of the J. David Jewelry locations. You’ll find a huge selection of rings, earrings, necklaces, bracelets and pendants that
will please any wife or mom, and fit your budget. J. David Jewelry is known throughout the area as the place to shop for truly customdesigned jewelry. “Customers frequently bring in several pieces that have been in their families for generations,” says Landon. “They are interested in having a single piece of fine jewelry custom designed and crafted utilizing a variety of diamonds or other fine stones.” J. David’s designers will sit with you and exchange concept ideas. They will sketch ideas you will love. Once a concept is selected, another artisan creates a cad/cam rendering with the cost to produce the creation. “Our designer’s cad/ cam designs actually look like photographs,” said Landon. Once the design is finalized, a 3-D printer is used to produce a 3-D plastic model. Upon final approval, the lost-wax technique is used to create the actual piece of jewelry. Each step, from concept to creation, takes place at J. David Jewelry.
Two outstanding gift ideas to consider for Mothers’ Day are J. David’s Alex & Ani Jewelry and their Heart Throb Collection. Guaranty Abstract Expands Residential Closing Center es brings benefits to both the company and its clients. For Lisa Riggs, office manager, there is no doubt the restructuring is for the best. “It was absolutely a good move,” she says. “With everyone under one roof, we have depth within the office.” Nita Caywood, who also manages office operations, agrees. “Now, if someone is out for vacation, it’s easy to step in and cover for them. There are no gaps in service, and communication is much easier.” Not that there was much problem with providing stellar customer service in the first place, but the comanagers explain that the lessening of stress related to communication and consistency service translates to a better experience for everyone –
especially the customers. It’s nice to have the entire team in one place, they say. After all, closing real estate deals is as much an art as it is a craft. Experience can make or break a deal. “You can’t just go to school for this,” Spiegel explains. “There’s no college program. Most of the successful closers have been in the industry for a long time.” And Guaranty Abstract has some of the best closers in Tulsa. A family-owned business since 1928, three generations of Kirkpatricks have led the company through changes in markets and technology, recruiting top-level talent along the way. Part of the company’s success, Spiegel says, relates directly to the fact that so many employees
have stayed with them over the years. For example, the seven escrow closers who comprise the team at the Residential Closing Center have over 103 years combined experience providing abstracting and title services for Guaranty Abstract Company. Property sales can be emotional and tedious for buyers and sellers alike. With so many who have “seen it all,” Guaranty Abstract clients can rest easy knowing their property deals are sure to work out for the best. What makes a good closer? “Crisis management. Communication. Flexibility,” says Riggs. Caywood chimes in, “The ability to multi-task.” Riggs adds, “Compassion. Willingness to change.” Caywood elaborates, “Being
willing to learn and educate.” Spiegel points out that laws and regulations change, so the ability to not only stay informed on the latest forms and details, but also to be able to communicate these processes to all parties involved in a way that moves things forward, is crucial to success. The new Residential Closing Center supports this goal, allowing for convenient, regular meetings with leadership and nurturing dialogue about best practices amongst the staff. The result is a revitalized, focused team whose mission is superior abstracting, title and closing services for residential properties. Such a commitment is exactly why Guaranty Abstract Company is a reliable name in the industry. If
continued from page 1 you are considering buying or selling residential property, tell your lender or realtor that you want to use Guaranty Abstract Company as your closing company.

Kitchen Causing You Pain? Take Charge with Premium Cabinets continued from page 1 ends with brand new cabinets in a revitalized kitchen they love. The first step, consultation, takes the client from brainstorming design concepts to detailed layout. “The process begins with a measuring kit we provide for customers,” says Austin Gullic. “It’s important to get accurate measurements in the beginning.” Even though there will be a final measurement before the layout is sent off for an order, it saves a lot of time to have it right early on. Once the basic dimensions of the kitchen are obtained, the conversation moves to design. “It sounds funny,” says Austin, “but I usually talk to customers about pain.” He explains, “Usually there are a couple of specific details in their current layout that agitate a person – I mean, if they were happy with their kitchen, then they wouldn’t want to change it in the first place.” Gary and Austin suggest solutions as a client explains their predicament. “We focus on key needs,” says Gary, “We want to make it yours.” Sometimes, it’s the little things that make all the difference. “I like to suggest a drawer next to the sink for towels,” he says, “or a hidden trash can close by.” Another go-to feature that Gary installed in his own home is drawer and cupboard door dampers. His pain, he recalls, was an early-rising teenager who had a tendency to shut drawers and cupboards loudly. “There’s nothing worse than getting woken up an hour before your alarm is supposed to go off,” he laughs. Soft close options take the sting out of early mornings and late nights. Utilizing a computer design program and a big screen, Premium Cabinets clients are able to collaborate with staff to establish all the features of their new kitchen’s layout. Then, the discussion turns to style, colors and materials. With three design areas and a display room on
site, it is easy to get a hands-on experience of what the future will bring. Once all the elements have been selected and a final set of measurements is in place, the order and specifications are sent out. Premium Cabinets partners with Joy Marble and Tile for countertops and backsplashes. For clients who want to hire contractors for installation, electric and plumbing connections, Gullic has a short list of trusted contractors to provide. Premium Cabinets’ approach, which emphasizes a flexible package of reliable services and resources, has earned them an award from Angie’s List. Typically, orders are delivered in 4 to 6 weeks. The day before installation, existing cabinets are removed. Once the room is prepared, installation begins. Plumbing and electricity is connected after cabinets are in place. From there, it’s all about enjoying a new kitchen designed especially for you. Premium Cabinets is offering a special promotion with Joy Marble and Tile. The package is designed to suit most standard sized kitchens and includes granite countertops and installation.

May Is National Foster Care Month tion to the dire need for more. An appreciation dinner at Freddie’s in Sapulpa kicked off the event. Foster families were recognized for their generosity and commitment to giving the neediest kids in the DHS system an opportunity to experience a meaningful connection with adults who care for them and support them. “Without our foster parents, these kids would not have this opportunity,” says clinical supervisor Christine Hamner. Unlike traditional foster care, Choices for Life focuses on children with a higher level of emotional and behavioral needs. They come from families in crisis with no one to care for them. Their histories include abuse, neglect and homelessness. To these children, education is far distant to simply surviving another day. Choices for Life takes these kids, from infants to age 18, from
overcrowded DHS shelters and provides them with the therapeutic treatment they need but would not receive in traditional foster care. They currently have 55 children. Each child is carefully evaluated and then matched with a strong and stable foster family that will nurture the child to heal, grow and develop the interpersonal and behavioral skills to become a positive and accomplished adult. “The goal is always to reunite the children with their biological families whenever possible,” says Christine, adding that Choices for Life provides counseling and support to help make a successful reunification. Fostering a therapeutic child is not an easy task. It takes patience, love, strength and an open mind. For some people, it is a calling. That is how Tommy and Kelly Evans feel about the more than 100
therapeutic foster children they have welcomed into their hearts and rural Collinsville home during the past 11 years. Kelly says her childhood dream was to have eight children. With two step children and two biological children, medical issues prevented more. The Evans felt they had more love to give, so they began researching foster care agencies. “The people at Choices for Life were so professional and so supportive,” she recalls. “We felt comfortable with them.” Seven years ago, they adopted two of their foster girls. At about the same time, two brothers, ages two and three, came to their home. Kelly says the only word either of them knew was “No!” One pulled out chunks of his hair in frustration. “They were separated from their family,” she explains. “They had not had the best situation, but the only one they knew.” Today the boys are straight “A”
continued from page 1 students and are active in sports and music. And Kelly’s dream of having eight children came true with their official adoptions. Looking back over the years, she remembers numerous challenges when they needed the support of a Choices for Life therapist. A simple phone call to a professional who is available every minute of every day put them on the right track. “You have to step back and put yourself in the kids’ shoes. They are scared. But regardless of how they act, they all want someone to love them.” Kelly says her brother and sisterin-law became interested in the foster kids and will soon begin training to become therapeutic foster care parents. The four to six weeks training is free and can be flexible – including evening and Saturday hours – to accommodate individual schedules. “There has never been a greater
need for foster families,” adds Christine. The number of children who need help is increasing while plans are under way to close shelters. Anyone who feels they might have what it takes to make a lifelong difference in a child’s life can call Choices for Life at 918-248-4340 Monday through Friday between 8:30 and 5.

Jousting is always an exciting activity to watch at the Oklahoma Renaissance Festival.
By Sheryl Sowell The Renaissance was a rebirth of the human spirit, igniting a passion for beauty expressed through poetry, art, music, intellect and romance. Metal: The Roof M of a Lifetime
Community Builders, Inc. recommends energy-efficient metal roofs for a lifetime of beauty, without the maintenance. By Duane Blankenship Greg Wolter founded Community Builders, Inc. and has served as its president for more than 30 years. The company offers home remodeling services to clients throughout Oklahoma, Kansas, Arkansas and Missouri. They are not general contractors, but rather specialize in the work they know best, and they do it well. This includes energy-efficient vinyl siding, replacement windows, gutter guard systems, high quality sunrooms, bath and Jacuzzi products, and metal roof systems. “We’ve always impressed customers with our professionalism, price competitiveness and customer dedication,” says Greg. “We’re grateful that customers continue to put their confidence in us by giving us the opportunity to provide outstanding products and services in every remodeling project we do. We enjoy earning your respect and your business.” Now is a great time to think about roofs, and Community Builders recommends metal
and stone-coated metal roofs by Energy-Loc. “A common shingle roof has a life expectancy of about seven years,” says Greg, “and even top-of-the-line shingles generally last only about 11 years.” Community Builders offers metal and stone-coated metal shingles that carry 50-year labor and materials warranties. “While it’s true that our Energy-Loc roofing products cost more than composite shingles, one needs to compare the life expectancies of the products before making a final decision,” says Greg. “Most homeowners’ insurance companies discount premiums on their policies up to 35 percent for stone-coated or metal roofs.” Check this out with your insurance company. The number one home insurance claim in Oklahoma is for roof damage and replacement. Here are some facts to keep in mind if you’re considering a new roof for your home. The patented Energy-Loc interlocking fastening system prevents
panels from lifting and allowing blowing embers to ignite the roof deck. Their Class “A” Fire Rating is the highest in the industry. They come with a 120-mile-per-hour wind warranty and have withstood 170-mile-perhour wind tests. Energy-Loc’s hail warranty has the highest rating in the industry, and their superior features reduce the threat of roof collapse in an earthquake. Instilling Self-Discipline Through Martial Arts Martial Arts Academy believes in a balance between traditional aspects of martial arts and a connection with the real world.
Self-discipline is one aspect of martial arts that Chris Velez, senior chief instructor and Martial Arts Academy owner, aims to instill in all his students.
By Carol Beck-Round For Martial Arts Academy owner and Senior Chief Instructor Chris Velez, instilling self-discipline in his students is part of the journey to success. With more than 20 years of experience in various martial arts, Mr. Velez stresses a balance between the more traditional aspects of martial arts and connecting what his students learn at the academy with the real world. For students, the process of learning self-discipline begins “the second they walk through the doors of the academy,” he says. “The process begins immediately as he or she is exposed to a structured environment.” Because of this higher level of structure – unlike any other structured environment a young person is exposed to – the environment at the Martial Arts Academy quickly introduces the student to a certain protocol. “We have a required etiquette,” he adds. “Our protocol requires the student to address us with ‘Yes sir’ and ‘No sir.’” In the hyper-structured environment of the martial arts studio, Velez stresses that there is a difference between discipline and self-discipline. “Our objective is to build self-motivated discipline,
which by definition is to ignore what you feel like doing and instead doing what you know is right.” The second aspect of self-discipline as understood by the student involves “focusing all of our energy on the task at hand to accomplish correctly the first time,” he explains. “Too many times, the student is not completely focused. The mind may be wandering from what he or she needs to do after class to somewhere else he or she might want to be at the moment. To get it right the first time, the student must be completely focused on the task at hand. I had an instructor who said, ‘You can get through life twice as fast if you do it correctly the first time.’” The third aspect of selfdiscipline “is doing things without being told.” Velez adds, “Our goal is to get our students to think about self-discipline. In the academy, they are constantly reminded through proper etiquette. In other words, they practice each time they come here, and they are reminded at home.” Parents become involved by reinforcing what their children learn at the academy. “We call it a ‘Black Belt’ attitude, with attributes of self-discipline, respect,
leading by a positive example and focus – always trying. It’s a continual effort to be an example to others.” “Black belt training is more than a workout, exercise or fitness program,” he explains. “It is about total health, self-confidence and discipline. We strive to help students become leaders not only in our academy, but also at home, in school, at work and within the community. This is the true meaning of the rank Black Belt Leader.” Student training requires encouragement and reinforcement each time they attend a class. “We reinforce the idea that self-discipline is a requirement for success. It is also a muscle that requires a workout and with practice, it grows stronger,” he adds.
