35 Years of Creating Dream Kitchens and Bathrooms Tony Sementi, owner of Tile by Tony, offers customers tips on choosing the right contractor for your home project. By Jim Butcher With nearly 35 years of experience in remodeling kitchens and bathrooms, Tony Sementi, who owns and operates Tile by Tony in Catoosa, emphasizes, “We do things differently than most contractors.” And as a result, he has developed a “Seven-Point Guide” on How to Pick a Contractor for this type of project. 1. Scope of work. Knowing exactly what you want done will help generate a detailed, accurate and less expensive bid. Be consistent and give identical information to all bidders. He suggests, share your budget with the contractor prior to the bid and consider doing the job in stages, if the estimate is too high. (continued on page 24)

Welcome to the showroom of Tile by Tony in Catoosa. Tony Sementi, who started the business in 1982, puts it simply, “If you can imagine it, we can make your dream kitchen or bathroom come true.”

Ralph Higinbotham and his wife Fay own the Broken Arrow collision repair center, and Faye has a way of putting a smile on just about anybody’s face. ASK THE MONEY MAVEN STRAIGHT-FORWARD, NO-NONSENSE TALK ABOUT YOUR MONEY

When You’re the Sandwich… helps to preserve personal control and eases the decision-making burden of the family. These are fairly simple. You can even pull one of these forms off of the Internet. Make sure they sign with a witness present and preferably a notary.

BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT

Helping your senior parents prepare their estate, talking with your aged parents about money, their home, and private affairs is never easy. Talking with them about the inevitability of their passing away is even harder. It is one of those family talks that many avoid and procrastinate having until it is too late. However, just like other uncomfortable and awkward talks (like the birds and the bees with your children) you will feel much better once it is done. They will likely feel less burdened and more resolved with their decisions as well. The following are three topics to cover in your talk. 1) Do they have a will or a trust? A will is a legal document containing instructions as to what should be done with their money and property after their death. A will contains information about who gets what and names a person to carry out these wishes. However, a will does not exempt the estate from going through probate. Probate can be lengthy, costly, and is public. The other option is a Living Trust. A trust is a legal document created by them (the grantor) during their lifetime. Just like a will, a living trust spells out exactly what their desires are with regard to their assets, their dependents, and their heirs. The big difference is that a living trust bypasses probate, enabling the successor trustee to carry out the instructions as documented in the trust at their death. It also names the person they want to manage their financial, healthcare, and legal affairs if they should become incapacitated. If they choose not to create a will or a trust, at a minimum they should name beneficiaries on their banking and investment accounts, and have non-

retirement accounts registered with a transfer-on-death document or with rights of survivorship. This last option will only cover the specific accounts that they are listed on and not for other assets such as their home, cars, and other miscellaneous stuff. I have visited with lots of folks whose estate planning included putting their children as joint owners of their accounts. I personally don’t like this option. Here’s why. Older mom adds adult daughter as joint owner of her financial accounts. Adult daughter gets in a car accident. The other people in the accident sue the adult daughter for damages or death of their loved one. The joint account that she holds with her mom could now be included as her assets. That could be a potential mess! Now, what if adult daughter gets a divorce? Hmmmmm…… 2) Do they have a Healthcare directive? This is a written document that allows a patient to give explicit instructions about medical treatment to be administered when the person is terminally ill or permanently unconscious. It describes their wishes as to what medical intervention they want. It

3) Do they have Long Term Care Insurance? This insurance helps provide for the cost of long-term care and includes a range of services, from home health care to assisted living to nursing home care. Long term care insurance covers care generally not covered by health insurance or Medicare. In Oklahoma, the average cost of one year in a nursing home is $53,290, according to seniorhomes.com. The older you are when you start long term care insurance the more expensive it becomes. You are also more likely to have pre-existing conditions that make it impossible to get. PPilates During Pregnancy Beth West shares her personal journey of practicing Pilates before, during and after pregnancy.

By Sheryl Sowell Beth West attended Pilates classes at Strength of Mind & Body for four years before she became pregnant with her first child. Rather than use it as an excuse to be lazy, Beth continued attending classes throughout her pregnancy and since giving birth to her son, Abraham, seven months ago. “Pilates helped me in so many ways before and after he was born. My job requires me to sit at a desk most of the day, and doing Pilates twice a week helped me stay active and gain a healthy amount of weight during pregnancy,” says Beth. “I also believe it helped prepare me physically and mentally for labor.”

According to Strength of Mind & Body owner Teresa McIlroy, RPT, “Pilates helps build your abdominal core strength and pelvic floor strength, as well as improving flexibility, agility and economy of motion. During pregnancy, ligaments become lax, and Pilates is about strengthening the deeper muscles that stabilize joints, providing much needed stability and balance.” A common difficulty of pregnancy is backaches and overall discomfort, and Pilates can help ease those pains. “Pilates felt great when I was really uncomfortable the last few months. It was refreshing to come to class and stretch and tone my muscles,” says Beth.

Teresa McIlroy, owner of Strength of Mind & Body, with client Beth West and her son, Abraham.

An important element of Pilates is breathing. The Pilates breath focuses on taking full inhalations and exhalations. “During the labor classes I took, they discussed breathing exercises to help make labor more manageable. I was already familiar with the breathing concepts from taking classes at Strength of Mind & Body,” says Beth. “Pilates teaches you to focus your mind on your breath and concentrate on what your body is doing. Although it is different for every woman, I feel in my personal situation that the breathing and concentration techniques I learned in Pilates helped me successfully achieve my goal of having an unmedicated birth.” In addition to promoting a healthy pregnancy and birthing experience, Pilates can help women bounce back more quickly after their baby is born. During pregnancy, many women experience a separation of their stomach muscles, known as diastasis recti. “Pilates strengthens the deeper core muscle called the transverse abdominus, which is like your natural, God-given girdle, and helps repair the abdominal wall muscles,” says Teresa. In addition to the physical benefits,

Beth West demonstrates the Pilates Reformer machine. Pilates after delivery offers mental and emotional benefits as well. “It’s important to take some time for yourself as a new mother, and coming to Pilates once or twice a week helps me relax and stay emotionally healthy,” adds Beth. The small class sizes at the Strength of Mind & Body studio allows the instructors to provide individualized attention to each client. “Whether you are expecting a baby, recovering from an injury, or completely new to exercising, we can tailor a program for you and modify exercises as needed. We have clients ranging from young athletes to people in their 80s. We emphasize personal attention and a sense of community.”

Talk to your doctor before beginning any exercise program, especially during pregnancy. For more info about Strength of Mind & Body’s fitness programs, visit www.strengthofmindandbody.com.

AAccessorize for Back to School The District on Main carries several popular accessory and clothing lines for styling perfect school ensembles.

By Lorrie Ward Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright once said: “The difference between humans and other mammals is that we know how to accessorize.” While this was meant as a humorous remark, there is a lot of truth in it. Humans not only know how to accessorize, many of us love to do so! For those in this group, The District on Main in Claremore will

be introducing and expanding several popular lines of accessories and clothing this fall, just in time for back to school. When asked which new addition was her favorite, owner Cari Bohannan says, “It’s hard to choose just one favorite! I’m so excited about all the new and expanded products for this season.”

Tulsan Jill Donovan created another success story in the accessory world with her Rustic Cuff collection. This line of handmade jewelry has exploded from Jill’s living room to worldwide fame in just four years, and is also spotted adorning celebrities. Cari is proud to have expanded the store’s Rustic Cuff collection, as it is locally crafted with quality in mind and helps bring a sense of personality and style to any outfit. Accessories can be carried as well as worn, so The District on Main is proud to present an expanded line of Lilly Pulitzer products, which include colorful bags and thermal cups. Especially popular for back to school are the Lilly Pulitzer 17-month agendas, which are very detailed and thorough while still maintaining a personalized and beautiful look. These are only three of the many unique lines that Cari offers at The District on Main. She recently expanded her selection of yoga clothing and added Juju Jams, a line of comfortable and stylish sleepwear that is created in Tulsa. She started out carrying a small selection of Southern Tide, and this fall will expand the offerings to include long sleeve T-shirts, pullovers, vests and collared button-up shirts, as

New to the store is the Kendra Scott fall collection, which debuted in July. Since Kendra Scott established her tiny, Austin-based company in 2002, her unique collection of colorful, classy, and affordable jewelry has “taken the world by storm.” Pieces by Kendra Scott have been spotted on celebrities such as Eva Longoria, Hilary Duff, and Sofia Vergara.

well as Southern Tide’s popular selection of Yeti coolers. She has also expanded the store’s selection of JAG Jeans, which have exploded in popularity because of a more modest and comfortable fit. And for those who gear up for the fall sports season, she’s added more from Game Day Couture, a Sand Springs based company. Early August will not only be a perfect time to gear up for fall at The District on Main, but also present a great opportunity to save money. Oklahoma’s TaxFree Weekend is August 7-9 and during that time, all Brighton Shoes and select Brighton handbags will be 30 to 50% off. Make a visit to The District on Main in Claremore a priority item for your back-to-school to-do list! Also stay tuned on Facebook and Instagram for specials and new arrivals.

for Activities at Bluegrass & Chili Festival The annual festival will take place September 10-12 at the Claremore Expo Center.

By Lorrie Ward The music got its name in 1939, when Kentucky-born Bill Monroe and his “Blue Grass Boys” made their debut appearance at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, playing music that brought a hard driving and powerful sound (with plenty of acoustics and vocal harmony) to the traditional country music scene. But this kind of music was anything but new. Bluegrass music incorporated repertoires from string bands, gospel, blues, country music, and even laborer songs. The roots of chili are very different, but they are just as ancient, perhaps even more so. Its basic flavoring, the chile pepper, has been spicing up meat dishes for millennia all over the planet. Even before chili became a menu staple of American cowboys on the cattle trail in the 1800s, a remarkably similar dish of meat,

beans, herbs, and peppers was a favorite of Incans, Mayans, and Aztecs before Europeans ever darkened this continent. These two great traditions come together in an explosion of sound and flavor at Claremore’s 36th annual Bluegrass & Chili Festival, September 10, 11 and 12 at the Claremore Expo Center. Claremore Chamber of Commerce’s Dell Davis calls it “three stages of free ‘pepper hot’ concerts by national and regional artists.’” Award winning headliners include Daily & Vincent, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, Rhonda Vincent & the Rage, IIIrd Tyme Out, The Lonesome River Band, The Cleverly’s, Tulsa Playboys, and Cedar Hill. the Rose District in Southern CCelebrate Summer Style White Linen Night returns for a second year as downtown Broken Arrow continues to grow. By Christopher Davis Break out your lightest linen outfit and spend a breezy evening in Rose District. White Linen Night: A Summer Celebration draws inspiration from the French Quarter to present an event that will beat the heat and bring a smile to faces. “White linen was the traditional clothing in the South during hot summer months back when most people did not have air conditioning,” says Gregory Bridges of the Broken Arrow Main Street Merchants Association. “We want to capture the down-home, small-town feel of a traditional Southern block party right here on Main Street!” The event recalls a time when shade and reflective colors were the only respite from the notorious southern summer heat. In the ’90s, many urban areas across the Sun Belt repurposed the tradition as a vehicle to spur interest in economic sectors that had found new life as art districts. Last year, the Broken Arrow Main Street Merchants Association introduced the idea to the community as part of a larger campaign to unveil the

newly-christened Rose District to the public. Over the past year or so, the Rose District has grown up and filled out. Main Street is no longer the half-full/ half-empty avenue it was a few years ago. While revitalization efforts are still underway, many milestones have been met. The result is a boulevard perfect for hosting street festivals and sidewalk strolls. Nearly every storefront has received a face lift of some sort, and new businesses have sprouted up. A handful of lots have started over completely, providing a blank canvas for entrepreneurs to move in and do what they do best. Restaurants such as The Rooftop, In the Raw and Andolini’s Pizza help give the Rose District a distinctly upscale feel. Meanwhile, the Broken Arrow Performing Arts Center, Pinot’s Palette, David Nunnely and Your Design anchor the arts scene. Stogies and Main Street Tavern, just to name a couple, entice passersby with the promise of fresh libations. Fitness fans will find Fleet Feet and Spoke House Bicycles. And, it seems like every

Don’t miss the 2nd annual White Linen Night in Broken Arrow’s Rose District. month brings an announcement of a new neighbor moving into the district. In short, the Rose District’s new growth is already blooming and ready to be enjoyed. White Linen Night presents a timely opportunity to experience the new face of downtown Broken Arrow. Plus, the event is free for all and family friendly. Attendees are encouraged to wear white linen (or cotton) and prepare for fun the whole family can enjoy. Entertainment and food will be plentiful throughout the evening.

Local musicians will provide entertainment while artists and vendors showcase their wares out on the street. Curbside, art galleries will be open to the public, inviting attendees to take in the latest productions by Broken Arrow’s growing art scene. Food trucks will also be on hand, expanding dining options, and Rose District businesses will stay open late for the occasion. Make plans to hit Main Street in your white linen outfit and join the fun. The celebration is set for

Saturday, August 15, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

By Dr. Michele Neil-Sherwood and Dr. Mark Sherwood You are not destined to become a victim of chronic disease! This is one of the guiding principles of the Functional Medical Institute (FMI), where your answer to health and wellness begins. Under the leadership of Dr. Michele Neil-Sherwood (known as Dr. Michele), Internal Medicine/Sports Medicine

Physician, and Naturopathic Dr. Mark Sherwood (known as Dr. Mark), one can expect a unique experience of listening, care, and compassion with an unwavering commitment to provide the finest opportunity for total healing. The foundation of FMI rests in a four-pronged approach (known as the ‘4E’

the four elements of a person – physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual. The ‘E’ stands for “EVER.” Dr. Michele asserts, “We want each person to be well in each of these interdependent areas. When a person experiences wellness as a whole, they experience PEACE, rather than experiencing DIS-EASE.” “We can and do help people. We see miracles daily in peoples’ physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual lives. We care about each patient and truly want to help them get well in each part of their life,” Dr. Mark adds. This dynamic duo is seen twice weekly on 4E TV, which airs in the Tulsa metro area on Cox 7/ ATT 47 at 10 p.m. Tuesdays and 12:30 p.m. Thursdays. The treatment at FMI generally focuses on lifestyle management. Hormone balance, anti-inflammatory food protocols, and body composition normalization are areas of specialty. DNA testing is also utilized. This unique test tells each patient what to do, eat, and take. If you are tired of not knowing exactly how much to eat, what type of exercise to do, and what supplements to take, this test is for you. No more guessing! Additionally, the couple has just published their first book,

in an easy to read, instructional, and motivational format. The book can be easily obtained by visiting www.marksherwood.org. Dr. Michele asserts, “It is our strong belief that people need accountability and a strong support system to obtain true healing. We have been gifted to provide both.” The couple readily shares success story after success story. “It is not uncommon for patients to lose 2 to 4% body fat per month on our protocols. We practice what we preach and desire to lead by example. We cannot and must not tell our patients to do that which we are not willing,” Dr. Mark says. Do you want to be an individual who is riddled with chronic disease, aches, pains and debilitating illness, or would you rather have the vim and vigor of a 30-year-old while currently in your 50s, 60s and beyond? If you answered “yes” to the second half of the question, perhaps you should make your way to the Functional Medical Institute. Drs. Michele and Mark have created a pathway to wellness by changing lifestyle from the ground up. Don’t take your health for granted by being uneducated and a victim of the Standard American Diet (SAD). The typical SAD, loaded with sugar,

and fake fats is taking a huge toll on our health. Metabolic disease is occurring at earlier ages than ever before. Once a disease thought to onset in the older years, Type 2 diabetes is showing up in our young people. “When we learn to tame our lifestyle, we can control not only diabetes, but other metabolic diseases and syndromes of chronic inflammation.” True to their commitment to healing patients from the root cause of their ailment and empowering them with the resources to maintain the best possible health, Drs. Michele and Mark generate a personalized, multi-week plan, complete with short and longer term goals, for each patient. The pair also holds monthly educational classes that cover topics such as detoxification, inflammation, family wellness, fatigue, and stress management.

By Jodi Troyer, RCB Bank Mortgage Specialist Taking out a loan and assuming debt is a big decision. Your home loan is most likely your largest debt, and making sure you choose the right loan and lender should not be taken lightly. Here are four questions to ask. How many lenders have I spoken to? One? Was it your friend’s uncle’s brother? Not that he isn’t an option, but getting another opinion never hurts. For the most part, all lenders follow the same guidelines and have similar rates. Their differences lie in their options, such as mortgage insurance, ease of process and closing, as well as experience with certain types of borrowers like the self-employed. Getting an opinion or two could save you frustration during the loan process, as well as money. A few ideas for finding a lender are to ask your realtor, call a local title company (they work with various lenders and should be able to point you in the right direction), seek out your bank or call a local community bank. How strong of a borrower are you? Do you have a high credit score? Is your debt ratio fairly low? Do you have a large down payment? Or, have you had credit issues and don’t have a down payment at all? If you fit in the “better than average borrower” category, you should

Don’t Wait for Teeth to Break Dr. White outlines three main causes of teeth breakage and what you can do to prevent it. take an awkward hit. Biting forces are amazingly strong and if isolated on one spot, can produce enough pressure to break a tooth. An awkward bite is also a reason for patients grinding their teeth at night, called bruxing, or clinching during the day when in stressful situations. Studies have shown that teeth subjected to bruxism wear down 80 times faster than those not. This too makes teeth more susceptible to breaking.

By Steve White, D.D.S “Dr., I was just eating a salad and my tooth broke. I don’t understand how it happened – it’s never bothered me before.” Occasionally a tooth breaks for no apparent reason. However, usually a thorough dental exam would have discovered a pre-condition which would make a fracture or crack predictable, and, if treated, avoidable.

As old silver amalgam (mercury) fillings get old and break down, they expand. This puts internal stress on the tooth and causes cracks to develop. These can lead to parts of the tooth breaking off, or in extreme cases, teeth can actually split into their roots. In these cases, they may be unable to be restored and must be removed.

Generally speaking, there are 3 reasons that teeth break. 1. Awkward or extreme biting forces 2. Old fillings 3. Tooth decay Otherwise, healthy teeth are subject to fracture if the bite is not ideal and one tooth is forced to repeatedly

Decay in teeth normally starts with a small hole in the outer enamel layer and once through the enamel, it mushrooms out in the softer inner part of the tooth, called dentin. Once the hard outer layer is undermined, it is easily broken by even the lightest of biting pressure. The value of a comprehensive exam with Xrays, close-up digital photography, thorough bite analysis and visual exam can find any of these problems early on and minimize the treatment necessary to fix the problem. Don’t wait until it hurts or breaks, get regular check-ups, and get needed treatment

W Will and Wiley 80 Years Later The Will Rogers & Wiley Post Fly-In will be held Saturday, August 15 at 9 a.m. By Pat Reeder Will Rogers and Wiley Post died in an Alaska plane crash on August 15, 1935. It is often called the “crash heard around the world.” This year the Will Rogers & Wiley Post Fly-In at the Will Rogers Birthplace Ranch will be Saturday, August 15, the 80th anniversary of the history-making event, when bold headlines in newspapers all over the world carried the story. That day, and the lives of the two, undoubtedly the world’s strongest aviation boosters of their time, is remembered each year on

the Oologah, Indian Territory ranch were Will Rogers was born. Usually a Sunday event, it was changed to Saturday to reflect the anniversary of the deaths, said Tad Jones, Will Rogers Memorial Museum executive director. Airports across the country have been asked to join in a flyover in the 10 a.m. hour at their respective airports to honor pilots who have died in air crashes in the past year. At that same time a short program at the airstrip will pay tribute to the lives of Will and Wiley. Mary West of Oologah

will sing the “National Anthem.” The fly-over will honor pilots who have died in the past year. RSU Radio will live stream the tribute, available on other airwaves. Ross Adkins, announcer for the past several years, will present the commemoration program and a moment of silence. The popular duo of Lester Lurk and Joe Bacon, aka Will and Wiley, will land about 9 a.m. “I should be done with my altitude record and round-the-world flight by 9,” Wiley (Bacon) said. The Fly-In provides an

opportunity for the public to get a close-up look at airplanes and meet the pilots. Pilots enjoy the fellowship with fellow aviators and people who just enjoy planes. Cherokee storyteller Robert Lewis will be under a shade tree with his tales of animals, so much a part of early Cherokee tradition. There will be antique cars, inflatables and games for children, and food concessions. Ample parking is provided with rides to the viewing area. Roper Martin Howard and members of the Verdigris School football team

have assisted with parking for several years. Members of Rogers County Sheriff Scott Walton’s Mounted Troops will be on hand. Air Evac Lifetime, an air medical service, will fly in and be on hand to show their plane and provide information about the access at the Claremore Regional Airport. Ambulances from Oologah-Talala EMS and Northwest First District will have units for the public to see as well as be on hand for emergencies. Bring your own lawn chair or blanket and enjoy watching planes land and take off, walk among the aircraft, visit the house and see the room where Will was born, and remember the day 80 years ago when the world learned Will and Wiley had died in Alaska. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted.

For more information, contact

Will Rogers & Wiley Post Fly-In (918) 906-7258 It’s been 80 years, but Will and Wiley (Lester Lurk and Joe Bacon) are expected to land at the Will Rogers & Wiley Post Fly-In at about 9 a.m. on Saturday, August 15 on the grass strip at the Will Rogers Birthplace Ranch near Oologah.

35 Years of Creating Dream Kitchens and Bathrooms 2. Ownership oversight. Are you prepared to stay home to oversee the job, chase down materials, clean up job sites, and accept less than high-quality work? Then the low bidder will probably work for you. Do you want to feel completely safe leaving your family and belongings at home while you’re at work? Then be prepared to hire a professional. “Remember, as with most things in life, you get what you pay for,” said Sementi. “I don’t want my customers and any member of their families to be scared. I want you to have peace of mind when my men are working in your

homes,” he said. Tenure of his 15 employees range from the newest of seven years to one he hired in 1991. 3. Know the difference between an amateur and a professional. You immediately know a professional. They are on time to meetings or will communicate with you about any delay in meeting you, Sementi said. “They will be very knowledgeable on all aspects of a project. A professional will rarely throw out numbers; a professional’s bid will be very detailed, with scope of work and the cost of each item. This protects both parties. If it is not itemized, it’s not included.”

4. Get references. The Better Business Bureau, the Home Builder’s Association, and online sites like Angie’s List are also a good place to start, he continued. “Listen to your gut, it usually knows. Ask for recent references. Even a lousy contractor has had a good job or two,” he adds. To be on the safe side, check them out! And don’t overlook the obvious. Has the contractor done this kind of work before? For example, hiring a contractor who does excellent backsplash work does not mean that he can remodel a shower. 5. Communication is a biggie. “Without good

continued from page 1

communication between you and your contractor, the job will fail to meet your expectations,” Sementi said. “Communication is to construction like location is to real estate.” 6. Magnetic sign on a truck or brick and mortar? Though not a guarantee of quality, brick and mortar will show that he has a commitment to the community. 7. Verify your contractor’s workers’ compensation and general liability insurance. Most homeowners fail to check these basic things. Your homeowner’s insurance will not cover you if someone gets hurt on your job. You could lose your home. Sementi said, most people

prefer to hire one company for the entire project; this helps both the homeowner and the contractor in completing the project on time and reducing expense.

Unique Furniture Store Making Changes continued from page 1 The Taylor family-owned store is closing its second location in South Tulsa at 71st Street and Hwy. 169. “Our lease ran out,” Clinton Taylor Sr. explained, “and we’re taking advantage of this opportunity to make some big changes to our Bixby store.” The Taylors are negotiating to purchase the Bixby property, which they have been renting for three years. Once completed, Clinton Sr. plans to physically expand the store eastward and include a much larger showroom to provide their growing customer base a unique collection of outdoor furniture. “That’s only the beginning,” he said. “I do have more plans for the expansion, such as a loft, but we’ll let those unfold. For three years, we have been bringing new furniture designs and home décor that nobody has really seen in this area. As a result, we bring customers into the Bixby area from surrounding states that love our unique, special furniture and home décor items.” Clinton Jr. put it a different way. “Our store – The Refuge Lifestyle – is a destination store. Our customers are coming to Bixby to shop here, and we will do our best to serve them properly.” The store focuses on providing unique, elegant rustic furniture, much of which can be obtained only from the Taylors, who can add special design to an item. “Got an idea of something special you’ve dreamed about for your home? Talk to us and we’ll do everything we can to make your dream come true. That’s what we are here for,” said Clinton Jr. Another way of describing what their store is all about can be said in one word: “Wow!” Both the father and son said they hear that quite often from first-time visitors. “Atmosphere is what we are all about,” said Clinton Jr. “We are not one of those ‘big box’ stores. We will bend over backwards to satisfy our customers, and that is why we have a lot of repeat customers and referrals.” For those wanting special financing, “That’s no problem,” he added. “And we can ship an item to any place in the

country and have your gift item delivered for you.” Another change will be the leaving of Clinton Jr. with his family to another state, along with a new job of bringing his design ideas and experience to the manufacturer. He and his wife, Robin, who have three children, have been major players in the operations of both stores. They will continue to have input in the existing store. Clinton Taylor Sr. established the furniture store with much of the furniture crafted by his own hands. With his longstanding relationships with large, wellknown manufacturers like Green Cables, Woodland Creek and other furniture makers across the country, customers can find that unique, elegant rustic piece they’ve dreamed about. Because Internet shopping and social media play such important roles in today’s society, The Refuge Lifestyle is in-step. Inventory at the Bixby store is about five percent of what they can get for you from manufacturers, wholesalers and specialty shops across America, with hundreds of items customizable in size and color – and that’s the role of their website. The focus on the store’s website is “Exquisite Handcrafted Rustic Furniture – 100% Customizable” with hundreds of items that will totally surprise you, with elegance and sophistication satisfying many tastes. Find The Refuge Lifestyle online at Facebook.com/TheRefugeLifestyle and Pinterest.com/RefugeLifestyle.

VVisit the “Beach” in Broken Arrow The Nienhuis Aquatic Facility hosts Sand Dazzle on Saturday, August 15. By Christopher Davis As summer reaches its zenith, families have all but exhausted their bag of tricks to keep the kids entertained. Fortunately, the City of Broken Arrow Parks and Recreation Department is bringing a bit of the beach to Broken Arrow. On Saturday, August 15, all are invited to Sand Dazzle. For landlocked Oklahomans, the beach represents escape from the daily grind. Those lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the surf or a whiff of the salty air are rewarded with rejuvenation and a sense of calm. But the reality of the beach is sometimes less fantastic. The logistics of breaking away to the Gulf of Mexico, let alone the Pacific or Atlantic Oceans, is a nonstarter for many. Further, the threat of inclement weather or sharks is enough to undermine an outing. Traffic is an omnipresent problem as well, introducing chaos to an experience that should be anything but stressful.

Fortunately, the City of Broken Arrow Parks and Recreation Department has found a way to recreate some of the beach experience, sans sharks. The Sand Dazzle free event for all ages has all the ingredients of a relaxing day by the pool. For starters, four truckloads of sand are imported. The sand, mixed with the optimal amount of moisture, is perfect for building sand castles. Whether your objective is to construct a grandiose dream castle, a replica of the pyramids at Giza or a representation of your summer spirit animal, the opportunity to play in the sand is a rare treat. Plus, kids can hunt for seashells in the sand. Collected shells can be traded in for prizes – or keep them for display at home. This year welcomes a key improvement to Sand Dazzle: the City of Broken Arrow is adding more shade to the beach to help attendees beat the heat. With music wafting in the breeze and

a full service concession stand nearby, the event is a way to get in the last word in the annual battle against the Oklahoma summer. The Nienhuis Aquatic Center is located in Broken Arrow at 3201 North 9th St. (at 55th Street and Lynn Lane). Featuring an Aqua Play system, a wading pool, two large slides and two drop slides, the water park is well-suited for families and children of all ages. Sand Dazzle runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, August 15.

NNot Your Average Obstacle Course Conquer the Gauntlet brings world class strength and endurance challenge to Tulsa on August 22.

By Christopher Davis Do you have what it takes to conquer one of the most demanding obstacle courses around? Test your ability and endurance at Conquer the Gauntlet on August 22 at Tulsa Raceway Park. Tulsa’s Conquer the Gauntlet course is 4.19 miles long and features 32 obstacles. Packing more obstacles than similar races, Conquer the Gauntlet is designed to push contestants beyond their perceived limits. The race brags, “Your arms will be burning, your legs will be shaking, your body will be telling you to quit.” This is not a race for the casual runner. Adequate physical and mental preparation is encouraged. As one of only 17 US races

which has been selected as an Obstacle Course Racing World Championship Qualifier, Conquer the Gauntlet serves as an entry gate for those in pursuit of world-class competition. The top 15 males and females in each age division automatically qualify for the OCR World Championships in Cincinnati, Ohio in October. The race represents commitment, passion and a “cando-it-yourself” attitude. A familyowned operation, Conquer the Gauntlet sets itself apart from more widely-known, multimillion dollar races by focusing on grueling obstacles and a simple, no-nonsense approach. Some of the obstacles are overtly

intimidating, while others appear deceptively easy. All, however, will test the mettle of racers and provide entertainment for contestants and those cheering them on. One such obstacle, dubbed Flying Flames, has racers leaping through fire. Another, Dead Man’s Drop, declares a conquer rate of only 39%. In this, Conquerors must traverse a 24-foot beam using only their hands. And if that isn’t enough challenge, there is a lane set on an incline for added difficulty! With a conquer rate of 12%, More Cowbell is a sixteen-foot rope climb to ring a cowbell. Unlike Dead man’s Drop, racers can use their feet and legs (it’s hard to

imagine completing the climb, let alone without the aid of lower appendages!). Other obstacles have better completion rates, yet still pose a significant challenge to strength and balance. Walk the Plank, for example, looks easy enough: a series of planks set up on inclines and declines – with nothing to hold on to. Such a feat on its own might be a straightforward, though thorough, test of coordination. But, inserted amongst intense strength-draining, mud-soaked obstacles, the stakes are raised! Race registration, ironically, is the only thing that won’t push you to the brink – quite the opposite. A simple form makes signup

a breeze. With no hidden fees, Conquer the Gauntlet prides itself for a “what you see is what you get” process. There are volunteer opportunities, too, which can earn one a free shot at the Gauntlet and a “backstage” experience. Group rates are available, as are discounts for active duty military and veterans. The registration deadline is Sunday, August 16. To register online, visit www. ConquertheGauntlet.com. Wave times begin at 8 a.m. and continue through 1 p.m. Racers are advised to check in one hour before their start time. Each participant receives a T-shirt and medal for finishing, a Conquer the Gauntlet water bottle, Boom energy gel and race day photos. So, what are you waiting for? You may think yourself tough, but do you have what it takes to Conquer the Gauntlet?

GGetting Real about Real Estate Whether you’re a licensed agent looking to further your career or are new to real estate, Fred Keas can help guide you toward your goals.

By Sheryl Sowell Fred Keas has been a real estate broker for over 38 years – quite a feat for an industry often associated with a high agent turnover rate. According to Keas, many people do not stay in the field long-term simply because

it is not a career for everyone. “Many people go into real estate thinking it is really easy and they’ll make a ton of money immediately. Agents certainly have potential for good income; however, an agent must be highly

Real estate broker (and sports fan) Fred Keas stands by the baseball memorabilia in his Bixby office.

self-disciplined, with complete control over their time. They also need to have a reserve of finances, as all sales are straight commission.” For those who have what it takes to be a real estate agent, the rewards can be great. “I’m a people person. I love meeting and getting to know all kinds of people,” says Keas. “I especially enjoy seeing first-time buyers – usually young couples – purchase a home. Many people think they can’t buy a house, and I like to show them that they can. It is very rewarding to me.” One of the biggest perks of working in real estate is having freedom over your time; it’s not a Monday through Friday, 9 to 5 gig. “If you’re disciplined enough to have control over your business, you can work two days a week and spend the other five days out of town or spending time with your family.” If you are a licensed real estate agent, or if you’re interested in starting a career in real estate, you will want to speak with Mr. Keas. He is currently looking to build his team of agents at Fred Keas Real Estate, located in Bixby. His company, established in 1981, serves clients in the Greater Tulsa area, including residential,

commercial and land properties. “This is ‘a company of integrity.’ We believe in quality over quantity. Our reputation means more to us than any commission will; we are willing to walk away from a deal if it means tarnishing our outstanding reputation in the community.” For licensed agents who have not gotten off the ground with their career, working with Keas would be an excellent opportunity to receive personal training from a seasoned real estate professional. Keas was last year’s president of the Greater Tulsa Association of Realtors, the largest association of realtors in Oklahoma with more than 3,600 members. “As a broker with 38 years of experience, I can help coach agents to success and serve as mentor, educator, adviser and motivator. I will personally assist agents until they feel confident to work independently and successfully.” He will train agents in all aspects of real estate, including residential and commercial, land and lots, and property management. Those who are new to the real estate field should also contact Mr. Keas. He is a certified real estate instructor for licensing, and his first class of graduates completed certification

a few months ago. One of his students even passed the real estate licensure exam on the first try (students typically take the test about three times). “If you’re committed to becoming a successful real estate agent, I can guide you through counseling and education.” Prior to entering real estate, Keas was a teacher and coach for seven years. He then worked in insurance for seven years. One evening at a dinner party, a friend told him, “Fred, you would be great in real estate.” The following day he was enrolled in classes, and a year later he was a broker. The rest, as they say, is history. Fred genuinely enjoys meeting people and would love to talk to you about your future in real estate. (He’s also a huge sports fan and will discuss baseball with you any day.)

SSave Big at JBF The Just Between Friends children’s and maternity consignment sale will be held at Jenks Riverwalk during Oklahoma’s Tax Free Weekend, August 7-9, 2015. By Sheryl Sowell Having children isn’t cheap – in addition to the multitude of costs that arise, tack on clothing prices and many families are left with a large dent in their bank accounts. One infant outfit, for example, typically costs $12 to $25. According to Investopedia, the average cost for baby clothes is about $60 per month for the first year, totaling $720 a year. The cost for older children is even steeper. In a 2012 survey by Parenting.com and Women & Co., it was found that much of the money moms spend goes straight into their children’s closets. More than 90 percent of the 1,000 moms who participated in the survey said they spend more on new outfits for their children than clothes for themselves, and more than half said they expect to spend more on clothing than any other kind of back-to-school product this fall. Total spending varied by region, but average spending per child nationwide was $131 for back-to-school clothes. In a twochild household, that’s over $250 just to dress the kids for the fall and winter seasons. Fortunately there’s a solution for parents who are struggling

to afford clothing and other children’s items, and for those who would simply rather save the money they would spend and use it elsewhere, such as on a family vacation. Just Between Friends is North America’s leading children’s and maternity consignment sales event, where you save 50 to 90% off retail prices. JBF offers gently-worn clothing for infants up to size 14; shoes; accessories including hats, belts, hair bows, socks, gloves and mittens; maternity and new mommy gear; sports and outdoor equipment; toys; electronics; books and board games; baby equipment such as strollers, bouncy seats and car seats; furniture, bedding, and nursery and children’s room décor; and miscellaneous children’s items such as diapers, sippy cups, and hooded towels. This year, JBF Jenks will be held at a new location, the Riverwalk in Jenks, August 7-9. Shoppers will enjoy even more significant savings as that is Oklahoma’s Tax Free Weekend, when all clothing and shoes are tax-free. Everyone is certain to walk away with a bargain – or a hundred. Amber Post, franchise

owner of JBF Jenks, Owasso, and Lee’s Summit, Missouri, and new owner of JBF Broken Arrow, says this event will be bigger than it’s ever been. “There will be a lot of great travel systems, high end

www.ValueNews.com strollers and car seats, and swings. With the discounted prices and tax-free weekend, this will mean huge savings on these normally high dollar items.” Those who choose to become consignors earn 65 to 75% of the profits from their items, and they’re able to clear out outgrown clothes and other items. “Those who volunteer get to shop before anyone else at our pre-sale. Next are the consignors, and then first time moms with children under 12 months, daycare owners and teachers. The sale opens

to the public Friday, at 10 a.m. On Sunday, many items are discounted 50%,” says Amber. “There are literally thousands of quality items to choose from, and they are all priced below market.” Merchandise is separated by gender and size and neatly hung up, and the entire sale is organized into easy-to-find categories. Every item is examined for quality. “Most of the items are sold because of the great quality and prices, but items that are left over can be picked up by their consignors or left to be donated to local charities.” JBF accepts cash, Visa, MasterCard and Discover. Sale hours are Friday, August 7 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. (with $2 admission fee for 18 and over); Saturday, August 8 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. (free admission); and Sunday, August 9 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (half off day for many items). The next JBF sale will be held in Owasso September 16-19 at Friendship Baptist Church. Broken Arrow’s sale will be October 2-4 at the RHEMA Rec Center.
