ASK THE MONEY MAVEN STRAIGHT-FORWARD, NO-NONSENSE TALK ABOUT YOUR MONEY

VOTE! Why are American’s opting not to vote?

BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT Now, I’m not going to tell you who to vote for. I’m only saying that you really must! Come this fall, there will be a shift in power and we will have a new Commander-in-Chief. I have heard some real doozies for excuses about why people won’t vote. This country was founded on “We the People”. Many lives have been lost so that we can have the privilege of voting! Let’s take a look at three excuses when it comes to the current presidential campaign. EXCUSE #1 My one vote won’t matter because my state (whether it be Oklahoma or California) is so heavily Republican or Democratic. If a lot of folks think like this, the polls will show it. How quickly can one person turn into ten, then a hundred, and then a thousand? That would have a drastic impact in the choosing next leader of our nation. EXCUSE #2 I don’t care for the choices. That’s fine, but there won’t be a new crop of presidents in training tomorrow. You get what you get and you don’t throw a fit. Both of the candidates have been in some hot water for one reason or another. They both have their flaws. Instead, look at it from a different perspective. Over the next four years, there will be openings on the Supreme Court. I’ll give you one guess who makes the choice about filling those openings. If you guessed the president, you are correct. Once appointed and approved by Congress, a Supreme Court Justice is there for LIFE. Choose wisely, my friends. EXCUSE #3 The election isn’t going to affect my pocketbook or lifestyle, so I don’t really care who wins or loses.

Listen: decisions about taxes, regulation and the economy directly affect your job, your money and what you get to keep. If you are invested in a 401k or have money in a savings account, what you are able to earn on your money is directly impacted by who is in power. With the stock market indexes setting all-time highs, where you’re invested matters. Elections and global crisis have caused a lot of market volatility. Make sure you have a strategy in place that addresses specifically what you will do if the market takes a sharp turn downward. If you are uncertain about how to create downside protection and still seek opportunity, give us a call. We can help. For more information go to www.waterstonewealth.com or call 918-272-1120. www.ValueNews.com TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THESE END OF SUMMER CAR CARE TIPS TO GET YOUR FAMILY OFF ON THE RIGHT FOOT, AND KEEP YOU ON THE ROAD ALL YEAR LONG REPLACE WINDSHIELD WIPERS. Inspect your wiper blades for extreme wear, cracks or streaks when in use. Fall brings rain, sleet an even snow. Taking a few minutes to protect your first line of defense when driving your vision - is an important safety precaution. Plus, wiper replacement is quick, easy and inexpensive. Hummel's Nissan can help you select the right size wipers for your car and have you back on the road in no time.

CHECK TIRES FOR WEAR AND TEAR. Examine tire tread, wear and sidewalls to ensure your tires can withstand wet road conditions. As a good rule of thumb, tire lifetime should equate to five years or 60,000 miles. Be sure to check tire pressure on a monthly basis for maximum fuel efficiency and even wear. Tire pressure drops when outdoor temperatures drop, so be sure to keep tires inflated to manufacturer specifications. Remember, it's always a good idea to carry a spare tire especially during the winter months.

Listen for any scraping or grinding noises, and pay attention to soft or delayed responses. Another major part of your safety, ensuring your brakes are doing their job is of utmost importance. Scraping or grinding may be the result of a foreign particle or need for brake pad replacement, while slow response could mean there is too much air in the brake lines. In either case, allow Hummel's Nissan to inspect your brakes if you notice either of the above.

INSPECT LIGHTS. Fall means shorter days and more time spent driving in the dark. Walk around the outside of your vehicle and check the operation of all lights, including headlights, tail lights, parking lights, brake lights and emergency lights (hazards). Replace broken or burnt out lights, ensuring all vehicle lights are clean and free of dirt and debris.

A fully charged battery is necessary to start your vehicle, especially in cold weather. The only accurate way to detect a weak battery is with professional equipment. However, you can perform routine maintenance by scraping away corrosion from posts and cable connections, cleaning all surfaces and tightening connections. If you see signs of corrosion on the battery terminals or cable ends, it is time for replacement.

ENSURE HEATER AND DEFROSTER FUNCTIONALITY. Driving without a functioning heater and defroster is not only uncomfortable, but also unsafe. Extreme lows in temperature can occur without warning, and it's important to keep you and your passengers warm and the road visible. Be sure to check the heater and both front and rear defroster prior to the first cold spell.

Checking fluid levels includes transmission, brake and power steering levels. Make sure all are at or above minimum safe levels and refill as necessary. Change the oil and oil filter as specified in your owner's manual, or approximately every 3,000 miles. Also check the air filter to ensure that it is clean enough to allow for proper operation.

The cooling system should be flushed and refilled as recommended. The level, condition and concentration of the coolant should be checked periodically. Remember, a 50/50 mix of anti-freeze and water is recommended. Be sure to check the tightness and condition of drive belts, clamps and hoses.

PREPARE FOR THE UNEXPECTED. Restock your vehicle with emergency items and First Aid kits, including water, snacks, medication, phone charger, blankets, gloves, boots and a flashlight. You never know when the first winter storm will hit and it never hurts to be prepared.

QQuality Work Guaranteed to Last LCI Concrete provides expert, dependable service for driveway renovations for all seasons.

By Erica Ludwig

The kids are back in school which means the fall season is finally near. Soon the temperatures will drop, and leaves will be falling. There is nothing like ringing in a new school year like some home renovation, after all with the

kids out of the house, you can finally tackle some of those projects on your to-do list. What better place to start than with what greets you every morning and afternoon:: the driveway. Renovating the driveway is a timely task, especially

before the wear and tear of winter. Years of winter snow, ice and corrosive salt covering the driveway inevitably deteriorate the concrete. This causes it to become pitted and flaked, transforming into a real eyesore. The deterioration gradually worsens until it

Gifting people with personal confidence is at the core of her profession. “I really want to do things that make people feel better about themselves--that really makes me happy,” she said. Nicole went on to explain that treating acne, getting rid of unwanted skin ags or even darkening eyebrows can make a difference in someone’s self-confidence. She uses her advanced knowledge base and experience to customize the perfect treatment for a client. As skin ages, many people find their skin more dehydrated. When assessing the plethora of new treatments and fads, Nicole cuts through the hype to evaluate the science of a treatment, determining the best choice for her clients. By the time most people are 40, they have a lot of sun damage in the form of hyperpigmentation and more wrinkling. Chemical peels and microdermabrasion can be excellent options for addressing these types of issues. One of Nicole’s favorite treatments is OxyGeneo, an oxygenating treatment which offers exfoliation without the suction of microdermabrasion, making it a great option for all skin types. Unlike typical chemical peels, this facial offers no downtime for peeling, so a client need not plan a day hiding at home to get great skin. Another favorite treatment is Rezenerate, a professional tool featuring nanotechnology designed to improve fine lines and overall skin tone and texture. It allows for deeper penetration and maximum absorption of professional products. Nicole often recommends pairing this with a vitamin A osmosis facial

infusion for radiant, healthy skin. Reveal also offers lash and brow tinting, emphasizing a lovely, natural look to highlight a client’s unique features. Nicole teaches that skin care is like exercise. To have terrific skin, one must maintain the regiment at home as well. She wants everyone to look and feel their best, which means rather than simply pushing products, she is excited to offer options to best suit the client. A Premier Choice In Caregiving My Choice in Home Senior Services offers a variety of options with the best interest for your loved ones.

By Deanna Rebro Choosing the right care for an elderly loved one is no easy task. In your home? An assisted living center? A retirement village? A nursing home? In their home? There is no one-size fits all. Every option has its merits. For those who want to remain in the home they know and love, but still need some help, My Choice In Home Senior Services can help. Sisters and Owners Mella Glenn and Tish Stuart, started

this premier personal care assistance and companion caregiver service as a result of their passion for seniors. They learned the joy of caring across generations by helping their own family members live the fullest life possible in their golden years. When their mother needed extra care and they could not find assistance that met their high standards, the two sisters decided to leave their successful careers to start a

business that could fill a need for many more people. According to the U.S. Census, 10,000 people turn 65 every day, and will continue to do so through 2030. Many of them have families to provide them with lots of love, but little time. My Choice provides the time and exceptional nonmedical companion care that families want for their loved ones. Unlike other options, Mella and Tish are personally involved with each and every client and caregiver. “They are truly valued,” says Mella. “They become part of our family.” Whether needs are large or small, My Choice can help. Caregivers are available for hourly, daily, weekly, overnight, 24-hour or live-in assignments. The services are almost endless, tailored for each client as a concierge experience, from routine to unusual and everything in between. Services range from companionship, transportation to and from events and medical appointments, meal preparation and

nutrition, to problem solving and dog walking. The ladies get to know all their clients as well as their needs and preferences. Mella recalls one gentleman who will not eat his breakfast until he has had one peanut butter cookie. Little things like this can make a big and very positive difference in someone’s life. This is particularly important in clients who are dealing with Alzheimer’s disease or Dementia. They also work closely with families to communicate with them and relieve some of the stress and concern. When financial limitations are an issue, the company figures out a way to provide the loved one with the best possible care within the family’s budget. “We are dedicated to exceeding expectations,” says Tish. “We not only respect and take care of seniors. We strive to enrich their lives.” Choosing the right people as caregivers plays a large part in earning the trust of so many seniors and their loved ones. Every applicant goes through at least two interviews, extensive

local and national background checks, finger printing, previous employment verification and reference checks. Only one in eight applicants is chosen to become a My Choice employee. These elite caregivers receive thorough office, online and hands-on training. A proprietary matching system pairs caregiver and client so they can begin their relationship on common ground, where strong bonds often develop. Mella and Tish believe they have created the gold standard for in home senior care. Before making a decision for your loved one’s care, make a call and see for yourself why My Choice is the best choice.

Diagnosed with “STRESS”? MastersMD wants to help you towards a life well lived.

By Dr. Leslie Masters Have you ever wondered, in this day and age when we have the most advanced medical care in the history of mankind, why so many people are exhausted, over-weight, can’t sleep and full of anxiety or depressed? It just doesn’t make sense. We should have the healthiest population of people ever. Well, this is why: although the human body has changed very little, the world we live in has changed dramatically. Two thousand years ago we were running from the saber-tooth tiger, our cortisol would go up, our adrenaline would go up and when we found safety those “fight or flight” molecules would come back down to normal levels. However, in 2016 we are more likely to be running from the IRS or a former spouse. Our cortisol and adrenaline go up, and sadly these are stressors that tend to last for weeks, months, even years and the human body was just not designed to live in a persistent state of “fight-or-flight”. Functional Medicine doctors call this syndrome Adrenal Fatigue. A state of persistent stress that leads to chronically elevated cortisol levels, and when the condition persists, chronically low cortisol levels. Symptoms of “Adrenal Fatigue” are: High levels of fatigue each day, Difficulty with motivation, drive and lack of interest in new things, Unex-

plainable bursts of energy at night typically from 10 pm to 1 am, Inability to handle stress with a need to rest even after mildly stressful events, Lack of enthusiasm, have feelings of apathy or disinterest, irritability, anxiety and mild depression, Muscular weakness, swollen ankles and salt cravings, Weight gain or inability to lose weight, Frequent infections, chronic allergies or auto-immune issues. Although traditional medicine has been slow to accept this syndrome as a true diagnosis, it is hard to deny that millions of people have complaints that look remarkably like Adrenal Fatigue. My opinion is that we should simply call it what it is, Stress and recognize that the syndrome exists, it is common, and it is dramatically affecting the health and well-being of millions of people. “Stress in health and disease is medically, sociologically and philosophically the most meaningful subject for humanity that I can think of.” Hans H. Selye, MD “Unfortunately, our country’s health system often neglects psychological and behavioral factors that are essential to managing stress and chronic diseases,” Norman Anderson, CEO of the APA said in a statement. Many living with high stress are at a tipping point, faced with potential physical and emotional-health challenges if they are not able to get the support they need to manage

their stress well. If untreated, consistently high stress could become a chronic condition, which can result in serious health problems including anxiety, insomnia, muscle pain, high blood pressure and a weakened immune system. Research shows that stress can even contribute to the development of major illnesses, such as heart disease, Stress can have an extremely negative impact depression and obesity, or on a person’s quality of health and can even contribute exacerbate existing illnesses. 1. Both large and small systems are in full operation in their showroom to educate consumers on quality of water - and, you can drink it right out of the tap. “People want to know what is in their water,” says Tabitha Taylor, co-owner of Kinetico Water Systems. “It’s important to understand what chemicals are in your drinking and bathing water, whether you live on a street with city provided water or in the suburban areas where well water is more prevalent.” Chloramine, a chemical made up of chlorine and ammonia, is

added to drinking and bathing water in Tulsa, Jenks, Bixby, Broken Arrow and Owasso, among others. “We show you how to take out up to 99% of those chemicals and serve your family safe drinking water,” said Patrick Taylor, co-owner of Kinetico Water Systems. “Most of our systems are non-electric and run on the power of the movement of the water. So they are eco-friendly.” The friendly staff at Kinetico Water Systems is different from the big box stores. They are water quality experts, not salesmen. They can help you test your water for free, and design a customized plan for your needs. “We serve all customers’ needs large or small,” said Tabitha. “If you are looking for a low cost way to filter

Tulsa’s Restaurant Week Returns Sep. 10-19 Tulsa-area restaurants offer prix-fixe specialty menus to support the Food Bank.

By Kristin Ware In conjunction with September’s national Hunger Action Month, area restaurants are helping the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma fight childhood hunger in eastern Oklahoma by participating in Tulsa’s tenth annual Restaurant Week September 10 – 19.

Participating restaurants will offer prix-fixe meals and donate 10 percent of Restaurant Week menu proceeds to the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma’s Food for Kids program. Restaurant Week proceeds will be matched by the George Kaiser Family Foundation, up to $25,000. Restaurant Week patrons

can select from a variety of fixed-priced lunch and dinner. Restaurants will offer lunch and brunch menus priced at $12.95 per person for two courses and a threecourse dinner menu at one of two price points: $35 per person or $35 for two. Each menu features appetizer, entrée and dessert options.

Chimera Café is one of the new restaurants featured in this year’s Tulsa Restaurant Week. A few members of the Chimera staff are (L to R): Deon Griggs, Julian Dalesdernier, Jack Wood and Brad Linhart.

IT’S FAST AND EASY ACCESS TO MORE COUPONS AND DEALS THAN EVER BEFORE • No Login • Tap the name of the company • Print the coupon or present it to the business from your phone (Some businesses require actual Value News newspaper coupons.)

For more information about menus, visit okfoodbank.org. To kick off the tenth year of Restaurant Week, Antoinette’s Bakery offers a special Pie Night celebration from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday, September 9. Tulsans with a sweet tooth can purchase a slice of pie, with a portion of Pie Night sales benefitting Food for Kids and the food bank. Diners who visit the restaurants but don’t order off the Restaurant Week menu are still able to support Food for Kids by dropping a donation into the Extra Helpings box set up in each participating restaurant. The Food Bank’s Food for Kids program specifically addresses childhood hunger and ensures food-insecure children in our communities have a reliable resource for nutritious meals throughout the year. The program includes the Backpack Program, Free Family Farmers’ Markets, School Pantry Program, and efforts to feed children over extended school holidays, when they don’t have

access to the free and reduced meal program. “As we expand our Food for Kids program to feed more children in our community, support in the community is crucial,” said Eileen Bradshaw, executive director of the food bank. “Restaurant Week provides a really delicious opportunity to help ensure every child in our community has the food they need to succeed.” The event’s presenting sponsor is TulsaPeople magazine. Additional sponsors include Frontier Produce, Wireless Technologies, Yelp Tulsa, Mary K. Chapman Foundation, Lobeck Taylor Foundation and George Kaiser Family Foundation. For more information about Restaurant Week, participating restaurants and the special prix-fixe menus, visit the Tulsa Restaurant Week Facebook page, contact restaurants below or The Food Bank at 918-585-2800.

Why Do I Need Title Insurance? RCB Bank offers key insights for homeowners on this required policy.

By Kenneth Wohl Title insurance is a protection policy against loss which may arise from problems connected to the title of the property that you are purchasing. The home and the land you’re looking to buy may have had several ownership changes. Issues surrounding any of these ownerships may surface at any point. For example, a former owner may not have paid real estate taxes, or a contractor may say he wasn’t paid for his work done on the home before you purchased it. Title insurance protects the insured party from past legal issues and will cover monetary losses up to the amount of the policy. There are two types of title insurance policies: lender and owner. Lender policy is required on all mortgages. It protects the lender’s interest in the property – the mortgage. Owner policy, however, is optional and protects the owner’s interest - the property. Won’t the lender’s policy cover me? Not necessarily. The lender policy will only cover the lender’s loss, up to the value of the mortgage. An owner policy would cover the value of the property which is likely much higher than

1

the loan value. What is actually covered? The policy protects against any liens or other claims against the property that may have occurred in the past up to the day the policy was issued. How long am I protected? The lender is protected until the loan is paid off. With an owner policy, you are protected as long as

you or your heirs own the title. When you sell, the buyer will be required to purchase a new policy to cover any liens or claims that may creep up since the issue date of the previous policy. If you are refinancing, your original owner policy will cover you as long as you continue to own the title. A new lender policy will most

likely be required as the original lender policy terminates when the loan is paid off. How often do I have to pay premiums? It’s a single payment made at closing. Why do costs vary between title insurance companies? Like any insurance policy, different companies and policies cover different things. One policy may only cover the actual damages of the

claim, while another policy may include coverage of court fees and paperwork. Do I have the right to shop and choose my title insurance? Yes, but few buyers do. Most leave it up to their real estate agent, lender or attorney to select the carrier. You may be able to save money by shopping around. A lender’s title insurance policy may be required, but you do have options when it comes to choosing your provider. Talk to your lender for more information and ask about your rights as a homebuyer. RCB Bank is an Equal Housing Lender. Member FDIC. Opinions expressed above are the personal opinions of Kenneth Wohl and meant for generic illustration purposes only. For specific questions regarding your personal lending needs, please call RCB Bank at 855-BANK-RCB.
